It was hard because some of those girls I had for three years and they will be seniors next year. If I didn’t retire now, I don’t know when I would have. The Covid-19 vaccination clinics in the City of Los Fresnos have been such a success that some people are now calling this town on Texas Highway 100 a “super clinic hub.” Some 8,000 people have received the anti-virus shots in the four clinics held here so far and many more are scheduled to get the benefits of this campaign organized by city and
county officials. Ray Ortiz, a city councilman, said they couldn’t be any happier to see what has been happening since the first clinic took place on Dec. 9. “We feel very proud,” he said, referring to the past clinics held here. “I believe we have the best facility in Cameron County for this particular event.” Ortiz said Los Fresnos is contributing in a big
way with President Joe Biden’s goal to have 100 million people vaccinated by his first 100 days in office. The clinics have been so successful, resulting in an outpour of support and praise from social media and from elected officials. Among the comments include, “they did an awesome job,” “great job everyone” “I did like that we didn’t wait too long,” and “it was super organized.”
On Friday Jan. 29, more than 700 people per hour received their first vaccines. By the end of the day, 6,000 shots were administered. Although officials said people did not need to wait the day before as it has been happening where other clinics have been held, some 100 vehicles were in line the night before. Charlie Banda, the
city’s emergency management coordinator, said some 14,350 vaccines have been given to people since the first clinic took place on Jan. 13. “Everything has been going fine here,” he said. “Some of the vehicle lines have been long but the wait time to get a vaccine has not been that long.” And this Wednesday, Feb. 10, a second dose will be administered to the 2,300 people that received the shots on Jan. 13.

She plans to spend more time with her mother who is from Iowa and sit back and enjoy things she did not have the time for while coaching. “I plan on spending time with my mom and doing a bunch of things that I was never able to do,” said Woods. “I’d like to do some traveling, I love to swim, I want to get in that pool and hit it hard. I’m not one to sit back, I have to stay active.” Woods said. Woods who is from Osceola, Iowa moved to the RGV in 1986 to coach Physical Education and was named the volleyball coach for the Lady Falcons. Woods was also a softball pioneer, she started the Lady Falcons softball program in 1994.

TCEQ assesses $38,000 fine to City of Los Fresnos By Tony Vindell The City of Los Fresnos has been fined $38,000 for environmental problems at its waste water plant. It was the first time the municipality had to pay such an amount to the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality, or TCEQ. The administrative fine was assessed because the plant did not meet the requirements for levels of ammonia for April, May and June. However, the city took immediate steps to correct the problem by making periodic tests caused by aerators and which cost nearly $83,812 to rebuild them. The fine and sewer plant matters were the only agenda item of a special meeting of the city council held at noon on Tuesday, Feb. 2.
Several council members expressed disappointment for discussing something that happened a while back and hearing about it more than eight months later. “My concern is why we were not told about this before?” Councilman James Herrera said. “And why didn’t the former mayor respond to a letter addressed to him?” He was referring to Polo Narvaez, who is now a councilman, following last year’s city election. Councilman Andres Lopez also questioned the timing of the notification. “I have looked at previous agendas to find out if there was any mention of the sewer plant,” he said. “We should have been informed about the test results. This is a mat-

ter of information to let people know what is going on.” But City Manager Mark Milum said he was partly to blame for the mishaps, saying he gave Narvaez a stack of documents, including a letter TCEQ sent on Dec. 17, 2020. Narvaez was still serving as mayor at the time. As to the June 2020 fine imposed on the city, Milum said, “Any amount is too much, but it’s a lot less of what it could have been if we had not taken the steps

we did.” Although the problem was corrected and the fine paid, Narvaez said problems with water and sewage can have bigger repercussions. “The public’s health is at stake here,” he said after the meeting. “I am glad no one got sick.”

Los Fresnos senior Victor Loa secured his college future last month as Loa signed his letter of intent to play baseball at Texas State University. Loa, a savvy southpaw, has been a key piece for the Falcons over the past three years and has pitched in multiple high-pressure situations in the regular season and
postseason. Loa, who has goals of one day suiting up for a Major League team, realized the best route was to play college first and then – eventually – get drafted and go pro. “At the beginning no, I wanted to go straight to the pros,” Loa said. “I realized I can play college ball, and that will help develop me into something better for the next part of my career.” In his sophomore year, Loa was tabbed the 32-6A Most Valuable Player, The Brownsville Herald Pitcher of the Year and was Second Team All-State

threw his recruiting off and made it difficult for scouts. “It was very different,” Loa said on his recruitment. “It was very frus-
trating, and I had to be patient – due to the fact that coaches and recruiters could not go out and watch you play live.” Loa is ready to com-
pete at the Division I level. Texas State is part of the Sun Belt Conference. “What will be challenging is just being on my own,” Loa said. “I have to understand that it is my job to get better and be better for the program in order to keep my spot on the team.” Loa also plays outfield, first base and toes the rubber. Through his first three seasons, Loa has been a dominant force, racking up 226 strikeouts along with an impressive 1.44 earnedrun-average. Loa plans on being a physical therapist and will major in physiology.

The Next Chapter
The Love Affair Pt. IV By Nandy Ekle
A quiet little tapping sounded on the door and Christine lifted her head, her eyes shining as bright as stars with anticipation. “Hello, Jose,” she said as she opened the door and grinned like a silly schoolgirl. He had put on some weight during the year, but she didn’t mind. He was beautiful. She could hardly wait to get her hands on him. He stepped in and grabbed her. “Christine, my darling. How much I’ve needed you.” He bent and kissed her mouth. From the corner of her eye she watched Bryan drop his empty bottle and reach for a handful of chips. She put her nose to Jose’s neck and sniffed deeply
while her hands rubbed his spine. He smelled like he had ridden on the back of the wind—adventure, romance, woods. She loved that smell more than any of the colognes Bryan wore. “I’ve needed you too, Jose. I’m so glad you’re here.” She shut the door behind him. “So. Tell me what have you been up to?” She rubbed the front of his jacket. She was anxious to find what he had hidden under that cover. “Oh, just the same old stuff. I’ve flown to the moon and back, captured an evil spy ring, thereby saving an entire world from annihilation, rescued princesses and puppies, sword fought with evil kings, you know.” He shrugged with a playful
look in his eyes. “You know my life is nothing without you, my sweetest fan.” She looked in his face again, searching for that teasing light. Instead she found deep emotion. “Well . . .” Her words shriveled up and melted away as her hands caressed the front of his colorful jacket. Christine’s eyes darted to Bryan, who sat on the edge of the couch with a bowl of chips on the coffee table under him and the remote control in his hand. Then she turned back to Jose who nodded with a gentle subtleness that spoke volumes to her. I couldn’t wait for your hands to touch me again, his nod told her. I need your attention forever. Any waiting at all is too long for our little trysts. Christine felt heat rise to her cheeks. Her eyes darted away from Jose’s and she pulled him further into the room. “Let’s sit down before we disturb the coach here.” She smiled and waved her hand toward her husband. “Oh, no, we don’t want to disturb the coach.” He echoed playfully. As they settled on the sofa, Christine folded her feet under her dress and sat in her little corner. Jose slowly drifted to the
cushion between Christine and Bryan. As soon as his backside touched the couch his arm went around her shoulders and drew her closer to him. She could feel the angles of his side and the warmth of his skin and she knew this was where she belonged. “Tell me about your life during this past year,” he said. Bryan jumped off the couch tossing potato chips all around the room. “GOGOGOGOGO,” he screamed at the runner on the screen. “DON’T STOP TO LOOK AROUND, JUST GO.” “Oh, nothing exciting—just boring old me. I have some new silver strands in my hair, a stronger pair of glasses, a new prescription for my knee and hand pains.” “’New silver strands of hair.’ I love that. Very poetic. You should write a story about a woman whose silver hairs are worth money.” “I thought about dyeing them, but I decided I had earned every one of them, so I should show them off.” “THAT’S IT! THAT’S IT! THAT’S IT!” Bryan’s shouts at the teams on the tube across from him crescendoed as the players ran down the
field. “I love your silver hairs. They give you an air of serenity. And after everything I’ve seen, I need a little serenity from time to time.” “Oh, Jose. That’s just a nice way of saying I’m boring.”

Ammunition sales see sharp rise

By Tony Vindell The selling of ammunition has become such a big business that the supply of such merchandise is not keeping up with the demand. In fact, ammo buyers have been waiting for hours to get hold of limited boxes of bullets for handguns and rifles. The Bass Pro Shops store in Harlingen is sell-
ing five boxes of bullets per customer while supplies last. Similarly, Academy Sporting Goods is selling three boxes of bullets per person. And on Tuesday, Jan.2, the store started limiting the number of shotgun shell boxes to three per person. A week earlier, anyone could have bought a case of shells, containing 10

Ask Our Dentists Q:My friend was recently diagnosed with late-stage Oral Cancer. This startled all of us. She does not smoke and lives a healthy lifestyle. This was a wake-up call for ME and her whole family. Is there anything we can do to catch early signs?

boxes. However, don’t expect to find your favorite handgun and rifle bullets on the shelves where they have been usually located.
Ammo buyers have been forming long lines outside these stores and many of them leave disappointed after they are told that items are sold out. “I have been here since 5 a.m.,” said a
man waiting outside Academy store in Brownsville on a day last week. “This time I am third in line.” But for Vicente Gonzalez, luck wasn’t on his side.” “I got here too late,”
he said, “but I will probably come back again.” Asked if the buying frenzy had anything to do with the change in administration now under the leadership of President Joe Biden, a Democrat, Gonzalez said he did not think so. “This has been going on since last year,” he said. “But it’s getting worse.” According to people familiar with the issue of guns and ammo, every time a Democrat wins a presidential election people get nervous and start buying guns and ammo over fears of more government control. Social media plays a role. A post going around now is alerting the public about a new bill, H.R 5717, saying it is being pushed by Democrats right now. But how the bill actually reads and what the social media post states are very different. The bill is known as the Gun Violence Prevention and Community Safety Act of 2020.

Yes, Oral Cancer CAN BE detected early! You are very wise to be thinking about this. Here at Los Fresnos Dental Center, we now offer Oral Cancer screenings to all our patients as part of their dental exam & check-up, free of charge. We utilize the Oral ID system which is a simple,
painless, 2 minute exam that allows us to identify oral abnormalities not visible to the naked eye. In short, this exam can SAVE your life. Here are the most recent startling facts: • 40% of new diagnosis are young, non-smokers • 50% have a 5 yr survival rate • 63% of oral cancers are found in late-stage & 8,000 deaths due to this late diagnosis • Men are twice as likely to develop oral cancer • 1 out of 3 women will develop cancer in their lifetime One of the reasons we invested in & recently implemented the Oral ID system is: “The number of oral cancers has increased over a 6 yr period, where all other cancers have declined.” Oral Cancer is officially an epidemic & early detection is critical.
