Residents of Texas are still feeling the effects of an intense winter storm Lady Falcons that moved through the hoping to return to United States last week, which, The Associpostseason form ated Press reported, was responsible for at least 69 fatalities across the country -- and wildlife is suffering from the extreme cold as well, causing a turtle rescue to get underway in the state. A massive sea turtle Page 4 rescue was underway in Texas after extreme weather in the state has led the sea creatures to become stunned by the cold. A Look Back at 80 Sea turtles are ectoYears of Continuous thermic, or cold-blooded Service creatures, meaning they cannot regulate their own body heat. If the water they inhabit drops below 50 degrees Fahrenheit like it did during the extreme cold in Texas this week, the turtles develop hypothermia and become lethargic and unable to swim, according to the U.S. National Park Service. Page 5 When the turtles enter the cold-stunned state, they float to the top of the water, which puts them in jeopardy of being struck Business Feature by boats or the potential of washing ashore and becoming stranded on land. It also puts them at heightened risk for being preyed upon by natural predators. Hey Kids! Color this picture and bring it to the Texas Game Wardens in Los Fresnos News office at 705 W. Island, Texas, posted a video on Facebook on Monday calling attention to the struggles the organization faced amid the winter storm. “We are undergoing one of the largest coldstun events the island has seen in more than a decade,” Knight said. “Between yesterday and today, we’ve taken well over 500 cold-stunned turtles.” At 2 p.m. on Monday, the organization lost power, which has left their five, 25-55,000 gallon tanks holding the stunned turtles without heat -- putting the lives of the turtles at risk. “All of these efforts will be in vain if we do not soon get power restored to our facility,” Knight said. On Wednesday, SpaceX arrived at the facility with giant generators that were strong enough to support the organization’s electrical needs that allowed the turtles in Sea Turtle, Inc’s care to warm back up. The following day, Knight posted another update and called the event “the largest coldstun event in recorded history.” On Friday, the organization tweeted that the organization rescued over 4,900 turtles. Gulf World Marine Institute in Panama City, Florida, regularly performs sea turtle rescues when the local turtles become cold-stunned. The staff at the institute told AccuWeather earlier this winter that they focus on getting the turtles to eat and swim again so they can be released back

into the wild. Recovery for the turtles can take weeks if the turtle recovers quickly, but for others, it can take upwards of a year. “[We have] critically cold-stunned turtles,” the institute’s stranding coordinator, Lauren Albrittan told AccuWeather’s National Reporter Kim Leoffler last month. “What that means is most likely they have secondary infections or injuries or other illnesses other than just being too cold.” Between December 2017 and January 2018, the Texas coast had its largest amount of coldstunned sea turtles to date with over 3,500 turtles. Sea turtles were not
the only wildlife to be impacted by the extreme and unusual cold. David Arbour, an employee for the Oklahoma Department of Wildlife Conservation, posted photos to his Facebook account on Wednesday of a shocking sight -- alligators frozen in ice with just their snouts sticking out of the frozen bodies of water. The photos capture a natural phenomenon called “icing” and it is how the alligators keep themselves alive in the extreme weather, CNN reported. Icing is the reptiles version of hibernation in which they lower their metabolic rates, become lethargic and keep their snouts above the
frozen water and allow the ice to freeze around their snouts. “The gators won’t freeze if the water stays liquid,” Arbour said in a comment on his post. “Their snouts are just cartilage so freezing doesn’t hurt their snouts. They can still move and are aware of things.” Unlike the cold-stunned turtles, the alligators will survive without intervention from rescue organizations. Arbour explained in the comments that the alligators keep their snouts above the ice to breathe, and they will be able to survive the cold conditions.
Valley Baptist First to Bring Innovative Robotic Cranial and Spine Surgery to Rio Grande Valley
HARLINGEN – With the acquisition of advanced surgical equipment, Valley Baptist Medical CenterHarlingen (956)is346-3034 the first acute care hospital to bring the benefits of minimally invasive, robotic spine and (956)545-8520 cranial surgery to patients in the Rio Grande Valley and south of Waco, Texas. The cutting-edge equipment, which includes a surgical robot to assist in brain and spine procedures in addition to mobile, intraoperative imaging equipment, will allow neurosurgeons with the Valley Baptist Neuroscience Institute to offer new
treatment options to patients for a wide array of medical conditions, reducing the additional burdens of seeking treatment far from home. “At Valley Baptist-Harlingen, our continued goal is to provide our patients with the most advanced and precise treatments,” said neurosurgeon Dr. Alejandro Bentancourt, who became the first physician to utilize the Brainlab computer navigation system, AIRO mobile intraoperative CT, and Cirq robotic surgical arm during the area’s first robotic spinal procedure. “With the new

Valley Baptist First to Bring Innovative Robotic Cranial and Spine Surgery to Rio Grande Valley advanced imaging equipment, we can capture and review images of the patient’s anatomy while they are still in the operating room, allowing us to make decisions rapidly and to potentially change course if required. This helps to both save time and, when combined with our image-guided surgery system, potentially enables greater surgical accuracy.” The imaging equipment provides intraoperative images that can assist surgeons in a wide range of clinical applications in the operating room including cranial, spinal, ear/nose/throat (ENT), head and neck, trauma, orthopedic and general surgery. Those images can provide surgeons with a wealth of information that can be critical to providing appropriate care quickly and efficiently, Bentancourt said. “With this technology, we can rely on real-time intraoperative information,” He said. “This is a great benefit to our patients,
enabling us to confirm if we have precisely achieved the objective of the procedure. While still in surgery, we can acquire diagnostic-quality postoperative images to verify results as the final step before closing up the patient, potentially decreasing the need for revision surgery down the road.” Bentancourt said utilizing the new surgical robotic equipment could also offer a variety of benefits to patients, including less post-operative pain, smaller incisions, and less scarring than traditional open surgery. “The robot is controlled by the surgeon during the procedure,” he said. “By having an extra softwaredriven hand, your doctor can focus on all the surgical steps with both human hands.” The high-tech additions mark Valley Baptist Health System’s latest efforts to continue to provide highquality healthcare to patients in the Rio Grande Valley, said Jennifer Bartnesky-Smith,
Chief Strategy Officer for Valley Baptist Health System. “We are extremely excited to offer this additional advanced surgical and imaging equipment within our operating room in Harlingen. Not only does this help advance the surgical technology available for use by our award winning Valley Baptist Neuroscience Institute physicians, but it also advances the level of surgical care that can now be offered to our community right here at home. This is a continuation of our sincere goal to offer the very best, most advanced care to our community, while hopefully alleviating the financial burdens of being required to travel outside the Valley for healthcare.” For more information on these upgrades and the full range of services offered by the Valley Baptist Neuroscience Institute, visit https://www.valleybaptist.net/services/neurology-and-neurosurgery.

Lady Falcons hoping to return to postseason form By KEVIN NARRO Los Fresnos News
LOS FRESNOSThe Lady Falcons are looking to get back to the playoffs for a second time in the last three years. Los Fresnos will have their work cut out for them this season as they will be competing in the always competitive 32-6A. Last season the Lady Falcons were 13-4 in the regular season and were preparing to kick off dis-
trict play until Covid-19 shut down the season. The year prior, Los Fresnos went 19-13 overall and went 6-4 in district play before bowing out to Weslaco in the bi-district round. “I just want these girls to come out and compete every game,” said Los Fresnos skipper Traci Blackman. “I know most will say that they have unfinished business because of how things ended last season, but my girls truly believe this.”
Flash forward to the 2020 season, Los Fresnos will have to replace the bat of Reba Reyes who graduated last spring. Senior Sam Campos looks to fill the middle of the order along with Senior Aileen Avelar and Krystal Perez. Defensively, look for Los Fresnos to be a solid unit all around and for their bats to pick up where they left off last season where they averaged eight runs per game.

USO At 80 Years of Continuous Service By StatePoint
The United Service Organizations (USO), the nation’s leading not-forprofit charity that serves the men and women in the U.S. military and their families, is celebrating its 80th anniversary this year. Founded just before the U.S. entry into World War II, the USO rapidly expanded from a patchwork of local efforts with a handful of volunteers into a robust international organization. From Bob Hope to Marlene Dietrich to Bing Crosby, the USO offered now-legendary entertainment during World War II, as well as programs and services, quickly becoming an essential part of the war effort.
“Honorably discharged” by President Truman in 1947 after the end of World War II and reactivated for the Korean War in 1949, it is widely believed that the USO was inactive during this time. However, recent findings in USO archives and external sources show that the organization actually never stopped serving. Though the future of the USO was at first uncertain after World War II, it quickly became clear that even in peacetime, its contribution to the welfare of armed forces was essential. With hundreds of thousands of returning troops in-transit and new troops headed for occupation duty overseas -- as well as the many thousands of soldiers and sailors recovering in
hospitals -- key government officials voiced a belief that the need for an organization such as the USO was just as pressing as it was during the war. Then-USO president, Lindsey Kimball said in February 1946, “We face a responsibility to stand by during the difficult days of transition from total war to total participation in an achieved peace.” And stand by it did. With only a skeleton headquarters staff, between 1947 and 1949, the USO continued to operate clubs and lounges, as well as sent entertainers to perform for thousands of wounded service members recovering in hospitals. The USO is still building on its continuous 80-year history today.

Ask Our Dentists Q:I am a 42 year old female and have recently begun noticing changes to my gums and oral health, in general. My doctor has informed me that I’m possibly entering a “premenopausal” stage in my life. Is there a link between premenopausal stage and oral health? I forgot to ask my doctor during my last visit!
by DR. ADAM LALONDE
Dr. Adam Lalonde
This is a great question that is not often addressed. YES – there is a definite link. Women going thru this stage in life could lose 40% of their total bone mass, putting them at risk for losing teeth – the cause is MENOPAUSE and its related effects. Effects on the oral health of menopausal women include the
following: -The mouth will reflect changes faster than almost any other tissue in the body. - Menopausal gingivostomatitis, the condition in which dry shiny gums bleed easily. -May experience funny tastes & abnormal sensations in mouth. -Postmenopausal women with osteoporosis need new dentures more often & lose upper teeth more easily. -Women with osteoporosis are more likely to have gum disease. Dentists and hygienists are on the leading edge of helping women become aware of the effects of different stages of menopause. Communicating with your dentist about this is important. Let the dentist know of any family history of osteoporosis. Many risk factors can contribute to osteoporosis and bone loss.
