What-a-about What-a-burger

Back in June Los Fresnos News shared that construction for a Whataburger would be in the works. The original opening time frame was around September, talking with the current construction company, Scott & Reid Construction, the Superintendent in charge of the project, Thomas Naylor shares that they are looking more at the end of October.

Thomas Naylor shares they are doing everything they can to push

production along. Naylor says it might be sooner it just depends, but they are looking at opening the Whataburger by October 31st. No response have given by Whataburger management thus far, although Naylor does says they will probably need more employees and now would be the chance to see about applying.

More updates in the near future, as the information develops. Stay tuned for more.

Cowboy

Every Year the Cowboy Cook-off takes place at the Los Fresnos Rodeo

Grounds. Multiple teams from across Cameron County and Beyond enter to test their skills on the BBQ pit to see who can truly throw it down. The

Los Fresnos Cowboy CookOff entered its fifth edition. Multiple Categories for cooking teams include Fajitas, Cowboy Breakfast, Beans, Kids Q, Chicken,

Pork Ribs, Pork Butt and Brisket. With multiple tasty options, everyone has a chance to show their stuff.

“We initiated this to bring another family fun event to Los Fresnos and support our efforts to Graduating High School Seniors” said Larry Cantu, the Los Fresnos Rodeo Chairman. The Cook-off, which always garners a lot of excitement and involvement in the community, continues to find success.

“We had 35 teams compete in the Champions BBQ Alliance Sanctioned Cook-off,” said Cantu. One of the

most popular events, the Kids Q, which allows young, aspiring cooks get a chance to compete in their own Division. In this Year’s Cowboy Cook-off, 11 kids competed in the Kids Q.

“The Kids Q went super well. Kids were really excited to compete,” said Cantu. Despite being in its fifth year, there is always a first time for everything, South Texas ISD also made their first appearance as a High School team entering the Cook-off.

Addressing the Burdens of American Nurses

(StatePoint) According to a new survey, American nurses are overwhelmed by job demands, a longbrewing situation only exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic.

While the majority of nurses continue to be dedicated to the care of patients, many are considering leaving the profession at a time when staff shortages are part of the problem. But there’s hope, according to industry experts, who say that understanding these challenges can lead to meaningful and necessary reforms.

The 2022 national survey, “The Future of Nursing: A Profession in Crisis,” of nurses and student nurses, was conducted by Cross Country, a market-

leading tech-enabled workforce solutions platform and advisory firm, in partnership with Florida Atlantic University’s Christine E. Lynn College of Nursing.

Overall, the study revealed that nurses remain passionate about patient care, with 66% citing helping people through meaningful work as a main driver for staying in the field. Nevertheless, ongoing challenges have created undue burdens for nurses, with pay rates/compensation (86%), staff shortages (53%), stress (39%) and burnout (35%) cited as top career dissatisfiers.

This frustration has put the industry in crisis: 28% of nurses indicated their desire to leave the

best. Vigorous brushing is not necessary, in fact, it can be harmful. After years of hard brushing, erosion of the enamel and gums can result. This can cause teeth to become stained more easily. Their appearance, in general, takes on a yellow or darkened look. Also, the gums can become prone to infection. So, lighten up on that toothbrush! After you have flossed thoroughly, brush gently with a soft- bristled toothbrush, and ease up on your grip of its handle. The trick is to concentrate on becoming more aware of the amount of pressure you’re exerting. Slow down and give your teeth and gums the attention they need and gentleness they deserve. Also, be sure to replace a toothbrush when it first shows signs of wear, and schedule regular visits with your dentist and dental hygienist. They will help you to monitor the health of your teeth gums. If you have any questions about brushing techniques and/or toothbrushes we’d be happy to answer them for you and we’ll even give you a complimentary toothbrush with appropriate, soft bristles.

profession has increased dramatically since the pandemic, while those who said their desire to stay has dropped from 24% in 2021 to 4% in 2022. This translates to a real potential loss of talent in hospitals, physicians’ offices, longterm care facilities and other healthcare settings. Of those surveyed, 23% plan to look for a new career in 1-2 years and 13% plan to retire in 1-5 years.

“We had hoped that as the pandemic eased, nurses would have better balance, mental health and working conditions, but we are not there and as a result, nurses are leaving the profession in droves,” says John A. Martins, president and chief executive officer, Cross Country Healthcare. “The

time to fix these mounting problems is now.”

To that end, Cross Country is deploying several strategies to transform the nursing profession.

These include an ongoing examination of pay rates and retention practices; identifying new pathways for education, licensing, and talent development; focusing on flexibility and growth opportunities; and investments toward innovation to strengthen the nursing workforce.

The company continues to invest heavily in technology and digital transformation to support these strategies. Among these initiatives is a new website dedicated to nursing candidates. Found at crosscountry.com, the site aims to help health

care professionals find and engage with potential job opportunities more effectively.

Identifying new pathways for nursing education is also a critical steppingstone towards reforming the profession and addressing healthcare provider shortages. That’s why the Christine E. Lynn College of Nursing offers accredited programs at all levels to prepare and train students, including various tracks for a BSN, Master of Science in Nursing (MSN), PhD and DNP focused on Caring Science. Also offered are a BSN-DNP program with a Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner concentration and postgraduate dermatology and telehealth certificate

courses, as well as other concentrations that intersect innovation and technology.

“Nursing is the greatest profession in the world. The experience you will get is priceless,” said one of the survey respondents. “Make sure you’re getting into nursing for the right reasons because I love coming to work and look forward to caring for patients every day. No two patients are alike, so every day in nursing is like a new experience and adventure. And you make the difference.”

Scorpions in the community: Amaya family home repairs

Texas Southmost College Construction, Electrical students aid family in need

When a Texas Southmost College alumni caught word of a Brownsville elderly family in need of assistance, he wasted no time jumping into action.

The home of 86-year-old Roberto Amaya became unlivable following a rainstorm that knocked out power to the home.

Carlos Rodriguez, who has completed degrees in multiple CTE (Career and Technical Education) programs, called some of his former instructors to see if they would be able to lend a hand and some eager students.

replaced wiring under the supervision of their instructors, ran new cables and put it a lot of work to get the house ready for an inspection from the City of Brownsville who has the authority to turn the lights back on if the house is up to code.

He went on to say there is a contagious element to having altruistic students in class.

“I always have a good group of students. Right now, we have two veterans who spend a lot of time volunteering and donating their money and time to help. That catches on with everyone. They are a little bit older than most students.”

Keeping it Rollin’

Los Fresnos picks up final nondistrict, ready for 32-6A play

The Los Fresnos Falcons hosted the Mission Eagles for the final non-district matchup of 2022. With District 32-6A play around the corner, The Falcons were looking to continue their dominance. Holding a 3-1 record with the lone loss to PSJA North, The Falcons were ready to get their final tune up game started. Last time Los Fresnos faced off against the Mission Eagles was in the 2021 Bi-District round of the Playoffs where the Falcons grabbed a big 5614 win.

Los Fresnos led the offense in the first half, punching in the first Touchdown of the night on a 13 yard TD run to

make it 7-0. Mission would quickly respond, on a 29 yard Touchdown Pass to make it 7-6. Los Fresnos would pick up one more touchdown to lead 14-6 at the half.

In the second quarter, Los Fresnos picked up two touchdowns and one interception to increase their lead 28-6. After a fumble recovery by Mission, Los Fresnos would intercept a pass two plays later to lead 28-6 at the Half.

Los Fresnos would capture their first TD of the second half on a 19 yard run by Angel Arce. Los Fresnos would also pick up their third interception of the night. Defense continued to play a factor in the fourth quarter as the Falcons picked up another

interception. One more touchdown was scored on a 19 yard run by Jose Luis Rodriguez to take the win 42-13.

Now heading into 32-6A play, Los Fresnos will come off a bye week to take on the Rivera Raiders in week seven. Week eight, Los Fresnos will go back to Lackey Stadium as they will face off against the Weslaco Panthers. Week nine will see Los Fresnos host the Hanna Golden Eagles. Week ten will see the San Benito Greyhounds come into Los Fresnos for the final home game of the season. To wrap up the regular season, Los Fresnos will take on the Harlingen Cardinals at Boggus Stadium.

Sweep to 3-0 Lady Falcons capture 32-6A win, Tied for First

Another Round of 326A play took place as the Los Fresnos Lady Falcons took on the Brownsville Hanna Golden Eagles at home. Coming off a big 3-0 sweep over the Weslaco Lady Panthers, Los Fresnos was 2-0 heading into the matchup. In the 32-6A Standings, Los Fresnos sits tied for first with fellow 32-6A powerhouse Harlingen. This matchup saw the return of Senior Power Hitter Olivia Parra, who has been sidelined due to injury.

The First set was heavily controlled by the Lady Falcons with Shiloh Jones

leading the offense, Picking up 5 kills and a block. Los Fresnos was efficient on serving as Marcela Tijerina picked up 3 consecutive kills on serves. Los Fresnos would dominate in the first set 25-5.

Set two began with Hanna going on a 2-0 run before the Lady Falcons quickly turned it around to make it 6-2. The second set saw Jenna Rios punch in five kills and three aces to lead the Lady Falcon offense. Addyson Vega, Iris Delgado, Roberta Torres and Ariana Hernandez also picked up a kill. In a mirror performance of set one, Los Fresnos again won 25-5.

Set three saw a more awake Lady Golden Eagle

team. Hanna picked up multiple kills to power the offense. Despite the slow start in the set, Los Fresnos’ offense exploded with Olivia Parra and Dakota Martinez combining for 15 kills to surge past the Lady Golden Eagle offense. Libero Cory Reyes also picked up a few saves. Defense was led by Jessietheresa Brisky with four blocks and one save. With the combined stellar offense and defense, Los Fresnos would win 25-13 to sweep Brownsville Hanna. With the win, The Lady Falcons are now tied for first in 32-6A alongside Harlingen, who captured a win over San Benito.

Beneath the purest and cloudy blue skies

Lies a great gift from nature. Here the calling bird cries, The wind through the trees, Like nature’s breath of life, Can lift up our hearts And counter great strife. As we walk ‘long each path, Free our hearts from all wrath, And let all that we meet, We lovingly greet.

For the call of a dove Does reflect God’s great Love. Its beauty does sweeten A South Texas Eden. Amen.

The habitat: The Rio Grande Valley’s unique ecosystem is comprised of coastal marshes and plains in the east, desert chaparral in the west and a lush corridor of riparian woodlands along the river.

The birds: North America has about 950 species of birds. The United States has over 800, Texas has 600, 500 of those can be found in the Rio Grande Valley and about 30 of those can only be found in the South Texas tip.

The history: In 1994 the Harlingen Area Chamber of Commerce and members of the birding community capitalized on the RGV’s biodiversity with an initiative to create the Rio Grande Valley Birding Festival. Propelled by volunteers and funded by sponsored dollars, the

first festival was a success and served as a model to many festivals across the country and abroad.

Birding and nature tourism were making waves and the RGV was on the leading edge.

The money: Today nature festivals are popping up across the country and after 29 years, the Rio Grande Valley Birding Festival is still making waves. In 2019, the festival hosted 600 attendees from 38 states and 12 countries. This is a massive boon to local commerce. In fact, the immediate impact of a recent RGVBF was totaled at 3 million dollars to the local economy.

According to a 2014 Texas A&M Economic Impact Study, ecotourism has an economic impact of nearly half a billion dollars on the Rio Grande Valley annually, extrapolating to over 6000 jobs in the Valley.

Registration for the 29th Annual Rio Grande Valley Birding Festival has begun. Anyone interested in attending a seminar

or a field trip needs to register at www.rgvbf. org. The festival will take place on November 9th-13th at the Harlingen Convention Center in Harlingen, Texas. The festival includes field trips, seminars, a trade show, a silent auction, a raptor show, kids’ activities and free family fun. A keynote speaker for the event will be Christina Baal, the 2022 Bird of the Year Artist for the American Birding Association. A wide array of guided field trips throughout the Rio Grande Valley are offered. There are boat trips, photography excursions, meet on-site as well as bus and van tours to private ranches, South Padre Island, King Ranch, national refuges and other areas that are home to an abundance of birds.

The Rio Grande Valley has over 20 specialty birds including Altamira Orioles, Aplomado Falcons, Green Jays and Great Kiskadees.

Los Fresnos Students Perform at

up by a message delivered by Dr. Salazar. Salazar’s message spoke of the many great things happening in public schools in Los Fresnos, throughout Region One and across Texas: “Children in our public schools participate in a jazz band and appreciate/ perform the music of Miles Davis or John Coltrane and/ or Canciones Rancheras of Lola Beltran and Alejandro Fernandez, to perform Narciso Martinez’s Muchacha Bonita or Ramon Ayala’s conjunto ballads.

fabric of democracy is being woven in our classrooms each day. “

“When the students took the stage, I watched from backstage with pride and a tear in my eye. Their hard work paid off and they nailed it,” said Castillo.

The opportunity for Los Fresnos students to represent the district came when Dr. Salazar was elected in June by a group of his peers to serve as president of TASA for the 2022-2023 school year. In his role, Dr. Salazar was tasked with assisting in moderating the 3-day convention, which brought together Texas leaders in public education for professional learning and networking while celebrating the accomplishments of their districts.

In July, students from

the Los Fresnos CISD’s fourteen campuses were chosen for the diverse showcase which featured the vocal and musical talent of various groups. including the Los Fresnos High School Mariachi Nuevo Halcon, Jazz Band, and Color Guard. The talent of the Conjunto bands from LFHS/LFU and Los Fresnos Elementary, in addition to members of choirs from all elementary and middle schools were appreciated by those in attendance.

Academic and STEM achievement in the form of robotics was also featured, by LFU freshmen Judy Mire and Matthew Gomez, who narrated the program.

The songs, which included a medley of

mariachi, jazz, and classic hits that energized the room and brought the crowd to their feet. “We chose the songs because we wanted people to hear the music and say they could relate,” said Santiago Castillo, Los Fresnos Elementary Conjunto sponsor.

“Each Los Fresnos student holds a unique talent that contributes to the collective landscape of this amazing showcase. We are proud of their eagerness to merge their skills and commit their time to make their performance a success. These are the true hallmarks of future Los Fresnos leaders,” said Dr. Salazar.

Rotary Recognizes the Students of the Month

Two students from Los Fresnos High were recognized by the Rotary club and given a certificate and a gift card. Principal, Justin Stumbaugh is a part of Rotary and brings along two students every month to have them share a little about themselves. Last week Olivia Parra and Thomas Sandoval were Representative Athletes; sharing some of their goals after high school and memories they’ve made.

Olivia Parra is a

senior and says she’s planning to go to Texas A&M. Parra plays both Volleyball & Basketball, being a very active athlete. Olivia shares her plan to pursue Dentistry. Thomas Sandavol shared his passion for football. He shared that one of his fondest moments was playing a game against San Antonio, though it was a tough battle and they did not come out with the win, Sandavol shares it was a great experience and will always remember that game and his team that stood by his side.

Sandavol says he plans to attend Texas A&M but is still undecided about what exactly he wants to pursue. Rotary Club, LFCISD, and the Newspaper all wish these students the best of luck in their future aspirations.

The Rotary Club of Los Fresnos recognizes two LFHS Seniors once a month as their ‘Students of the Month’. Rotary says in a Facebook post that “It was a privilege to have them as our Guest Speakers at our club meeting.”
