Blanca Davis / Dr. Diana Lozano
Meet Dr. Diana Lozano of Harlingen, Texas. She is a unique and amiable individual. Year round, she works diligently for her patients, the community, and society as a whole. Her professionalism and natural kindness towards her patients are her greatest traits. She is an internal medicine physician who also finds quality time for her family and friends. In addition to her medical practice, Dr. Lozano also owns and operates Valley Aesthetics Medical SPA in Harlingen as an Aesthetic specialist that works with laser and
injectables to enhance men and women’s natural beauty. The SPA was voted favorably by the community “Reader’s Choice” for two consecutive years. Five years ago, Dr. Lozano put forward an idea in collaboration with her friend Blanca Davis, advertising sales, to include small business leaders during her SPA’s first anniversary celebration. The plan was to make it enjoyable and open an opportunity to network with our area local business owners. “By doing this, we help them promote themselves, while at the same
time, we offer the loyal shoppers an opportunity to take advantage of the great holiday deals,” Lozano said. “Amid the current situation of inventory across the country possibly being in short supply this holiday season, our vendors have stepped it up— they have been preparing for the last three months in hopes to have the holiday solution for you this year.” “All under one roof! Get your holiday shopping done with us—it’s convenient!” Lozano said. Ms. Davis, having owned a small business in the past, understands the dedication and
arduous work involved when operating a family business. “You continually have to work twice as hard, especially during the holidays, when competing with the big-box stores,” said Davis. “Business leaders (especially women) also face the unique challenge of balancing their home, family, and their business.” She believes it takes extraordinary people with positive determination behind the scenes to make one small business shine! This year, due to popular demand and with a much larger venue, the 4th Annual Holiday
Shopping Mixer brings 46-50 retail vendors offering you the best in apparel (casual, formal, and western wear), fine jewelry, candles, floral, holiday wreaths, hand crafted and inspirational gifts, beauty products, photography and much more. Dr. Diana Lozano believes the small businesses have been on the sidelines too long (since March 2020). “This year, with safety precautions in mind, it’s time to jump-start the holidays, network with one another, meet new customers, and prosper as we make way for the new year,” Lozano said.

Ask Our Dentists by DR. ADAM LALONDE
Q: What is baby bottle tooth decay?
“Your Community Newspaper”
ANSWERED by DR.ADAM LALONDE:
Baby bottle tooth decay is caused by the frequent and longterm exposure of a child’s teeth to liquids containing sugars. Among these liquids are milk, formula, fruit juice, sodas and other sweetened drinks. Every time a child consumes a sugary liquid, acid attacks the teeth and gums. After numerous attacks, tooth decay can begin. The condition also is associated with breast-fed infants who have prolonged feeding habits or with children whose pacifiers are frequently dipped in honey, sugar or Dr. Adam Lalonde syrup. Fortunately, baby bottle tooth decay can be prevented by never allowing children to fall asleep with a bottle containing milk, formula or other sweetened liquids. Giving an infant a sugary drink at nap or night time is harmful because during sleep, the flow of saliva decreases, allowing the sugary liquids to linger on the child’s teeth for an extended period of time. If left untreated, pain and infection can result. Also, clean the baby’s gums to help establish healthy teeth and to aid in teething. Wrap a moistened washcloth around the finger and gently massage the gums and gingival tissues. This should be done once a day. Tooth brushing should begin upon eruption of the first baby tooth. When brushing a child’s teeth, use a soft toothbrush and a pea-shaped amount of fluoride toothpaste. Parents should first bring their child to the dentist between six and 12 months old. Keep in mind that healthy baby teeth will usually result in healthy permanent teeth and ‘happier’ trips to the dental office. Call us if you have any questions or concerns about baby bottle tooth decay; we love seeing kids of all ages in our practice and do our best to make it a fun visit

The Falcons stunned the Cards in double overtime 36-28 and are now 4-1 in 32-6A while Harlingen drops to 3-2. Falcons QB Matthew Padilla hit Edsson Picazo for a 24-yard TD in the second OT. On the next possession, the Falcons defense came up with a stop of fourth down to seal the win. The Lady Falcons are off to the playoffs and are awaiting to see who they will face out of 31-6A. It will be between Edinburg High or PSJA. The two will meet later in the week for a seeding game. Los Fresnos went 11-3 in 32-6A and finished in third behind Brownsville Rivera who went 12-2 and district champ Harlingen who went 13-1. The Lady Falcons wrapped up the regular season with a win over Harlingen South in four sets. Junior Olivia Parra was named player of the game in the win. With their seeding locked in as a third seed, coach Anissa Lucio looked at their match as one final tune up game. "We wanted to make this game a momentum game," Lucio said. "We knew this was going to be an important match and we
wanted to take this into the playoffs. We just want to take this momentum into the playoffs." Not only was it a momentum game but a bittersweet homecoming for Lucio who made her first appearance back at Harlingen South, this time as the head coach for Los Fresnos. Lucio directed the South

The Next Chapter Poem
Unknown Soldiers’ Salute
The tomb that’s unknown rests beneath a blue sky, A symbol of loss for many who die, For many who go to fight foreign wars May never return after living such horrors, Yet as years do pass, as the hour in a glass, The number do grow, whom only God can know.
Known only to God, the cost is not free, For the symbol of death is there that we see Throughout mankind’s history, When death rings a bell, Such tombs do remind us that war is hell. Oh, say can you see by the dawn’s early light What horror can be throughout war’s darkest night, When medals are given and salutes are all made, Nothing brings back the lost in the tomb who is laid. The highest of honors, and the greatest by far, Is to sow seeds of peace, where once there was war. Twenty-one gun salutes, passing fighter planes above, Are really not as great as the call of a dove. God’s truth, we already know,
For what we now reap comes from what we did sow. The lives are all precious, of soldiers unknown, For none but God can bring them Home. -James Arnold

Outdoor burning: What to know before you light the match
If you plan to light an outdoor fire this fall, remember to check first with your city and county about burn bans and local fire rules. Check the Texas burn ban map to see county burn ban information maintained by the Texas A&M Forest Service. Statewide, Texas limits outdoor burning to: Campfires, bonfires, fire pits, and cooking fires. Household trash fires on your home property—only if you lack trash pickup. Most wildfires start from carelessness. Control your fire by putting trash, grass, leaves and branch trimmings in a burn barrel or similar container. Top it
with a screen or metal grid. Also, keep water, a shovel and a rake handy in case your fire starts to spread. Finally, stay by your fire until it’s out. Certain items should never be put in a fire—such as aerosol cans or anything that could explode; electrical insulation; building/construction materials including treated lumber; and plastics and asphalt-based materials. If you spot a dangerous fire, call local law enforcement. You may also call the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality at 888-777-3186.

Ribbon Cutting Officially Opens UTRGV Institute of Neuroscience in Harlingen By Dimitra Trejo
RIO GRANDE VALLEY, TEXAS – OCT. 26, 2021 – The UTRGV School of Medicine, together with its clinical arm UT Health RGV, officially opened its Institute of Neuroscience (ION) with a ribboncutting event on Tuesday. The institute, which broke ground in 2019, is an all-encompassing research, education, clinical care and community partnership facility with the goal of transforming brain health for the Rio Grande Valley community. ION will bring advanced care and training in specialized neurological medical treatments and research to the Valley. UTRGV President Guy Bailey said partnerships with the South Texas Medical Foundation – which gifted the 35 acres on which the institute is being built – the City of Harlingen, and the Valley Baptist Legacy Foundation, which contributed $15 million to support the operations of
the institute, have made it possible to bring ION to fruition. “The Institute of Neuroscience is really transformative, for the UTRGV School of Medicine and for the Valley,” Bailey said. “This building is going to house a lot of folks who are going to transform the lives of the people of the Valley. “We thank our partners – including the City of Harlingen, the Valley Baptist Legacy Foundation, and the South Texas Medical Foundation – for helping us take this bold step in fulfilling our commitment of improving healthcare in South Texas,” he said. RESEARCH & EDUCATION The more than 30,000-square-foot facility houses medical services and research that will serve as critical learning experiences for the university’s medical students, and there are plans to start a residency program to train neurologists in the future. Dr. Ihsan Salloum,
UTRGV School of Medicine director for the Institute of Neuroscience, said at the ceremony that those interested in learning and conducting research in neurology will have plenty of unique opportunities. “We are so excited about training the next generation of neuroscientists here in the Valley,” he said. “As a HispanicServing Institution, we will place particular emphasis on working with underrepresented minorities and expanding on an already strong research program, with particular focus on brain diseases that affect our communities.” “We are building a team of multidisciplinary researchers that will bring together biomedical engineers, cognitive neuroscientists, geneticists and computational neuroscientists, along with neuropsychiatrists and neurologists. This will provide the foundation for scientific discoveries to advance brain health. There’s so much to look forward to,” Salloum said.
SERVICES Dr. Michael B. Hocker, dean of the UTRGV School of Medicine, said ION fulfills the School of Medicine’s mission to provide innovative, highquality medical resources for the people of South Texas. “This Institute of Neuroscience is a concrete example of UTRGV’s mission to provide leading-edge research, as well as educational and clinical care opportunities to this area of the country,” he said. “This is a state-of-the-art facility in South Texas, and we are going to have topnotch researchers and clinicians taking care of patients right here in the Valley.” Dr. Michael R. Dobbs, chair of the Department of Neurology and chief medical officer for UT Health Rio Grande Valley, said the institute’s medical providers and the services they will offer through the facility will be top-tier. “The technology at ION will allow physicians to provide leading-edge specialty services and
procedures, including advanced magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), high-resolution CT scanning, and positron emission tomography (PET),” he said. “Brain health just got a huge boost in our region, and we should celebrate that. The Institute of Neuroscience (ION) officially opened on Tuesday in Harlingen. The institute is an allencompassing research, education, clinical care, and community partnership facility that provides dedicated space to the treatment and research of brain, spinal and nerve diseases – like epilepsy, Parkinson’s disease, Alzheimer’s Disease and multiple sclerosis – for individuals of all ages (UTRGV Photo by David Pike)
EXCELLENCE Judy Quisenberry, executive director of the Valley Baptist Legacy Foundation, said ION is yet another example of UTRGV’s efforts to bring excellence to the region. “While none of us could have pictured what the
UTRGV medical school would become, the reality is much bigger and better than any of us could have dreamt,” she said. “To be the only distributed campus across a broad geography that we all call home is the most inclusive and provides the most access to its students, and that’s something to be really proud of.” Attending the ribboncutting were Texas Sen. Eddie Lucio Jr. (District 27); Robert and Anne Shepard, Shepard Walton King Insurance Group, and Randy Whittington, president of the South Texas Medical Foundation, for whom the Shepard Whittington Lobby is named; Harlingen Mayor Chris Boswell; and UT System Regent Dr. Nolan Perez. The Institute of Neuroscience is expected to receive its first patients in November. For more information on ION, visit https:// www.utrgv.edu/schoolof-medicine/departments/ institute-of-neuroscience/ index.htm.

Our sympathies go out to the four families that have been impacted by this situation. Customer safety is always a top priority and as part of the recall we proactively put plans in action to notify customers and prevent further product sales while federal agencies continue their investigation.”
As soon as Walmart was alerted to the issue, the company pulled the product from the shelves of about 55 stores in 18 states that were part of a pilot program and put a register block in place at stores and online to prevent any further sales. The CPSC issued its recall on Oct. 22. The company has listed each of the stores on its website. For customers who purchased the product online, Walmart emailed each of them letters on Friday, Oct. 22, alerting
them of the recall and indicating company records reflected they may have purchased one of six scents since February 2021 that were recalled. On Monday, after extensive research to identify contact information, Walmart also emailed more than 2,000 customers who purchased the product at one of its approximately 55 stores that sold it as part of the pilot program. In addition, the company is sending letters to another 263 customers with no email address on record and placing calls to a small number of other customers with no available email or physical address. Walmart is telling customers who purchased the Better Homes & Gardens Essential Oil Infused Aromatherapy Room Spray with
Gemstones since February they should stop using it immediately and follow recommendations in the voluntary Recall Notice for securing and returning the product to a Walmart store. This includes double bagging the bottle in clean, clear zip-top resealable bags and placing it in a small cardboard box. It is important that these products be handled correctly and returned to Walmart. Walmart will provide a full refund and offer a $20 gift card for any inconvenience.
