On Friday, December 10th, the Principal of Los Fresnos Highschool, Robert J. Stumbaugh presented two seniors to the rotary club meeting in Los Fresnos. The students shared a little bit about themselves. The students are a part of the CTE(Career and Technical Education) program at Los Fresnos Highschool and both have family history in the careers they are pursuing. Teresa Ann Alvarado, a student that just recently made the front page for getting third place overall in the South Texas Torch Cutting competition, along with Jaime Palafox. Mr. Palafox is a part of Falcon Law, which is focused both on Law enforcement and real simulated events in the Law enforcement field. Both these students got to say a few words and share what their future career plans and endeavors will be and how they hope to make an impact. Teresa Alvarado received ► CONTINUED ON PAGE 7

a $1,000 scholarship for placing third place overall in competition including one-hundred-seventy competitors from around the Rio Grande Valley. Ten of the one-hundred-seventy students were from LFHS.

All students received a $500 scholarship for competing. Ms. Alvarado admits she felt nervous once they called her up at the competition, but that she got up there, and just did what she knew how to do, weld. She explained

there were different rounds with different angle welds, four rounds in total. Ms. Alvarado not only represented Los Fresnos Highschool but also was one of the only females in the competition, ranking

3rd place in the entire competition Jaime Palafox explains, “I joined Falcon law because it’s part of my family, not falcon law itself but law.” He continues by explaining that his dad is a Sergeant

mous period, referees will pause the match and assess points before starting the 90-second, driver-controlled period. During the drivercontrolled period, teams may remotely control their robot to accomplish tasks and earn points. At the end of the driver-controlled period, referees will again assess points and calculate the match scores. The 2021-2022 TCEA Robotics Challenge is based on the LEGO brand Mindstorms robotics platform. The TCEA’s mission is to improve teaching and learning through the use computers and technology. Each year teams of students, sponsored by members of the TCEA,

receive a set of challenge rules and specifications designed around a theme that varies from year to year. Teams compete against one another in head-to-head competition through regional and state level play. In addition to the LFCISD Competition, this year’s Area 1 Competition will be held on January 29 at Edinburg Robert Vela High School. These competitions require long hours of preparation and plenty of teamwork. We are grateful to have this opportunity to show case the many talents of Los Fresnos CISD Robotics Club students and recognize that none of this would be possible without the extraordinary support of our exceptional parents and staff. 1st place MS, The Boyz (RMS) DSC-5888.

Ask Our Dentists by DR. ADAM LALONDE

Q: I have Medicaid dental insurance for my kids. Medicaid recently went thru some big changes and now there are MCO companies managing two Medicaid insurance plans. My kids are enrolled with one of these plans. We were assigned to a main dental provider that I did not select and am unfamiliar with. I would rather switch to another dentist. However, the dentist office we are assigned to tells me that I cannot change. Is this true? This just doesn’t seem right. I’m so confused. ANSWERED by DR.ADAM LALONDE:

You are wise to question this. YOU HAVE A Dr. Adam Lalonde CHOICE in who your Main Dental Provider is. When the Medicaid system underwent the changes, a Main Dental Home Provider was automatically (and randomly) selected for all insured who hadn’t already selected one. Many patients have commented that they were assigned to an unfamiliar dentist so you are not alone. The process to switch is quite simple. There should be a toll free member advocate phone number listed on your card. You (must be a parent) need to call your MCO company and request a new Dental Home Provider. You will then provide them with the new dentist’s information and the switch is completed after this phone call. That’s it! This switch should only need to be made once. If you find that you’ve been switched again without your authorization, immediately call your MCO to report this unauthorized change. It is your right to choose! A Main Dentist will oversee your child’s overall dental care. Your child can start seeing a Main Dentist as early as 6 months of age.

Organ Donation Still a Vital Seniors Share Future Career at Rotary Meeting Necessity During Holiday Season HARLINGEN & BROWNSVILLE – The holiday season is often seen as a time for giftgiving. It’s fitting then that local residents take this time to register as organ donors in an effort to give the most precious gift of all – the gift of life, said Lydia Touchet, Patient Safety Officer at Valley Baptist Medical Center-Brownsville. Although National Donate Life Month is traditionally recognized in April, there’s no better time to consider registering to be an organ donor than the present since the need for organ donation is year-round. “Organ donation means life. By donating our organs, we are not only being charitable, but we are helping others to live a better quality of life,” Touchet said. “It is helping our families and neighbors to live without having to be hooked up to a dialysis machine for the rest of their lives. It means those in our community may live to see their children and grandchildren live. When we donate, we enhance someone else’s life. Our corneas allow others to see better, our bones and tissues help others to walk and participate in other daily activities.” While Valley Baptist Health System has dedicated itself to raising awareness regarding the importance of organ donation in the Valley, the need for donated organs remains high both locally and throughout the nation.

According to the Health Resources & Services Administration, more than 106,000 men, women and children were on the national organ transplant list as of today. That list continues to grow, as a person is added to the waiting list every nine minutes. And for some, help doesn’t come soon enough, with 17 people dying each day while awaiting a transplant. Nearly 12,000 people on the transplant waiting list are from Texas. Because 95 percent of adults in the United States support organ donation but only 58 percent are signed up as donors, according to the Health Resources & Services Administration, Roy Evans, Chief Quality Officer for Valley Baptist Health System, said that raising awareness regarding the issue, especially within the local community where there are a number of misconceptions surrounding organ donation, is key to chipping away at the staggering need. “Even though we continue to make progress in educating our community, the myths related to organ donation can be difficult to dispel,” said Edwina P. Garza, senior communications coordinator for Texas Organ Sharing Alliance, the recovery agency for the Rio Grande Valley. “We continue to work hard for the benefit of every person on the waiting list and appreciate the efforts of Valley Baptist and its staff

to help save lives.” For more information on how to register as an organ donor, visit the Donate Life Texas Registry web site at www.DonateLifeTexas.org. BREAKOUT BOX: Here are a few facts regarding organ donation: • Donation does not disfigure the body or prevent an open casket funeral. • Organ and tissue donation is considered only after all efforts to save the patient’s life have been exhausted and death has been legally declared. • There is no major religion in the U.S. that is opposed to organ and tissue donation. In fact, many religions endorse organ and tissue donation as an act of charity. • Few people are too old or too young to donate. Currently there are no age limits for donors. At the time of your death, medical professionals will determine whether your organs are transplantable. • The organ allocation system is blind to wealth, celebrity and social status. Donated organs are placed in recipients based on best medical match and most critical need. • No costs directly related to organ or tissue donation are passed on to the donor’s family or estate.

What Every Small Business Giving the Gift of Tecnology Owner Should Know Today

StatePoint Given how much has changed about the way people do business over the last few years, experts say it may be time for entrepreneurs to rethink how they store and protect company data, and collaborate with their teams. According to Brian Mallari, a marketing director in Western Digital’s hard drive business unit, a shared storage or network attached storage (NAS) solution can help, and here’s why: • Cost: As every owner of a small- or mid-sized business (SMB) knows, cutting costs without cutting corners is key to protecting the bottom line. While cloud storage fees can incur ongoing costs, adopting a NAS solution is a great way to pay once while keeping sensitive data local to the office or home. • Capacity: Before

selecting a storage solution, consider your needs. From wedding photographers to graphic designers, many businesses need a storage solution that can grow over time. Popular NAS storage drives for small and medium businesses, such as the WD Red family of products from Western Digital, range in capacity from 1 terabyte (TB) to 18TBs, making them a good solution for those who work with large amounts of data. • A shifting workplace: With hybrid and remote workplaces becoming the norm for businesses of all sizes, this has added new challenges for business owners and their staff wishing to easily collaborate, edit files and work with shared files and databases. With a NAS storage system, all users’ PCs and laptops can be assigned permission to access the storage solution, giving them the ability to load files and data wirelessly

or via connected ports. What’s more, such a system can help protect your team’s work and data against loss from a network outage or potential cyberattacks, as remote/home data can be backed up to the storage device itself at the office. Because NAS solutions use several hard drives, they can provide protection of data via redundancy, also referred to as RAID. In other words, should one drive fail, the data lives on. • Getting set up: Getting set up with a SMB NAS storage system is easy. The solutions are available at consumer electronics stores and online, and you can choose from a NAS system that includes from two to 24 slots or “bays” for hard drives to make sure all your data is covered. Most NAS solutions, especially two- and four-bay solutions, can simply plug into an internet router via Ethernet.

(StatePoint) One of the most popular holiday gift categories every year is tech. And surprise -- many people need help setting up their new phones, laptops and other devices. Unfortunately, this leads to some family members missing out on holiday moments to serve as resident tech support for loved ones. Even worse, many gifts just stay in their boxes entirely. In fact, research from tech care company Asurion reveals that nearly a third of all tech gifts go unused because the recipients don’t know how to use them, and 70% of people say they have helped family members set up and troubleshoot tech gifts during the holidays, with most spending at least an hour playing tech support for family. With all this wasted tech and wasted hours, you may be wondering how we’ve gotten to this point and if there’s a better way.

To help you set up your tech gifts and give you more time back to spend with family this holiday season, Asurion is hosting a free Tech Help Hotline. Between 7 am-11 pm EST from Dec. 24–31, simply call the Asurion Tech Help Hotline at 855-355-8324 (TECH) or visit asurion. com/techhelphotline for free expert help setting up a tech gift you’ve given or received. The Asurion Tech Elves will be standing by to help with anything from setting up your phone and transferring data; to connecting your smart home assistant, your smart TV, and more. “While setting up gifts used to be as simple as adding batteries or plugging your device in, today’s top tech gadgets require firmware downloads, log-ins, Wi-Fi connections and more. Between prepping holiday meals, hosting the in-laws and keeping the kids entertained -- setting up tech devices can become

an unnecessary lump of coal,” says Marvin Maldonado, Asurion Expert Elf. “That’s why we’re on-hand this holiday season to help with tech setup, troubleshooting and tips to help you learn and grow with your newly gifted devices, hasslefree.” The holiday season is best spent celebrating with loved ones, not dealing with additional hassles. Take advantage of free tools designed to help you set up your gifts and get back to what matters most.
