Two UTRGV Freshmen Take Top Seeking An Anti-Mosquito Molecule Spots At Mariachi Vargas Competition By Victoria Brito Morales
RIO GRANDE VALLEY, TEXAS – DEC. 21, 2021 – Just like an arpeggio, two UTRGV freshman singers scored the top two highest spots at the 27th Annual Mariachi Vargas Extravaganza. Natalie Carmona, an exercise science major, and Jenika Montes, an integrated science major, were the victors of the College/University category of the competition. The event, held annually in San Antonio, showcases the talents of elementary, middle school, high school and college/university mariachi musicians. Held Dec. 3-4, it is the largest and most competitive competition of its kind and attracts mariachis from all over the world. Last year, due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, the competitions were held virtually. This year, it returned to the main stage at the Lila Crocker Theatre in San Antonio. For the contest, contestants submit a video audition in the preliminary phase of the competition. These entries are judged by members of Mariachi Vargas de Tecalitlán. Then, finalists are invited to belt it out on the main stage for the final round of the competition. THE SINGERS The champion of the college/university category and McAllen native, Carmona, is member of the UTRGV Mariachi Aztlán. She has been singing since she was a young child. Carmona competed with the song “Ay Mi Mexico” by Mariachi Divas. Her crescendo to the top spot comes after previously competing in the last four competitions. Last year, she

also placed first, but in the high school category. “I feel very honored to have placed first in the college division because this was my first year competing in the university level and in the university level everyone is very well skilled and were older and had more experience than myself,” Carmona said. Montes, a classmate of Carmona’s from McAllen High School and a member of the UTRGV Mariachi Juvenil, came in second place. Last year, she competed for the first time in the high school category and came in third place. “Music has always been a passion of mine since I was very young, I started in mariachi probably like a year and a half ago,” Montes said. For the competition,
she also sang a song by Mariachi Divas called “Es Mentira.” “It was my first time competing in person so to be able to get second place is crazy,” Montes said. “I can't even explain it.” Dr. Dahlia Guerra, UTRGV assistant vice president of Public Art, who founded the Mariachi Aztlán said Carmona and Montes showed the forte of the mariachi talent at UTRGV. “Not only did our fabulous students win first and second place, but the Mariachi Aztlán were invited guests to perform at the Mariachi Vargas Extravaganza Concert with Lupita Infante, granddaughter of the beloved Mexican icon, Pedro Infante,” Guerra said.
Texas A&M AgriLife Research scientists are on a mission to create a new weapon against diseasecarrying mosquitoes. A close-up photo of a mosquito The Aedes aegypti mosquito is a known carrier of diseases that pose a threat to humans. (Texas A&M AgriLife photo by Gabriel Hamer) Patricia Pietrantonio, Ph.D., a Texas A&M AgriLife Research Fellow and professor in the Department of Entomology in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences, is leading a three-year project toward a new method of mosquito control. The project will focus on Aedes aegypti and Culex quinquefasciatus species, which occur in Texas and around the globe. The team aims to identify molecules that can protect deployed U.S. armed forces members from mosquito bites and vector-borne diseases like Zika fever, yellow fever, Dengue fever and West Nile. A $672,000 grant from the U.S. Department of Defense, DOD, is funding the study. Most mosquito control utilizes pyrethroid-based products or malathion, an organophosphate, Pietrantonio said, but the DOD is looking for insecticides with new modes of action because
the disease-carrying insects are developing resistance to those insecticides. Female mosquitoes, especially in known diseasevector species, bite to feed on blood, which is necessary for egg production, she said. The study is based on established research but focuses on a novel approach relating to receptors in mosquito mouth parts, legs and internal organs. “We really don’t know what will happen at this point, but this is of interest because our research is investigating a novel mode of action for mosquito control,” she said. “This is a completely different approach that will be a multidisciplinary effort with many different players.” Toxic molecule provides potential against mosquito bites Pietrantonio said AgriLife Research scientists and graduate students will be a part of the project in collaboration with the laboratory of James Sacchettini, Ph.D., the Rodger J. Wolfe-Welch Foundation Chair and professor in the Department of Biochemistry and Biophysics, and collaborators in the Department of Chemistry at Texas A&M and in Portugal. The project aims to test small synthetic molecules that may be used to create a compound toxic to
mosquitoes. Pietrantonio and her team have screened more than 20,000 molecules and discovered several that could potentially inhibit bites, modify mosquito behavior or kill the insects. The project will test those molecules’ impact on female mosquitoes. To test efficacy, the team will offer the chemicals to mosquitoes in a feeding mix of blood or will apply them directly to the insect. Pietrantonio hypothesizes that a successful chemical will prevent bites by disrupting mosquitoes’ sensory signals. In prior testing, the team conducted a high-throughput screen of chemical libraries owned by AgriLife Research. From that screen, three molecules ended up causing paralysis of the hindgut in female Aedes aegypti mosquitoes, which are known carriers of yellow fever and other diseases. Those molecules and others will be tested further with the goal of producing a protective compound. “Right now, we are trying to see if the synthetic molecules chosen that have drug-like characteristics will affect the mosquitoes,” she said. “Whether they interrupt feeding or lead to paralysis or death, we want to determine how they might impact the insect and prevent bites.”
Ask Our Dentists by DR. ADAM LALONDE
Q: What is the function of wisdom teeth and how do I know if I need mine removed?
“Your Community Newspaper”
ANSWERED by DR.ADAM LALONDE:
If they grow in properly, wisdom teeth are no different than any other teeth in your mouth. However, if they become impacted, or erupt in a strange angle or location, they may need to be removed. Many dentists recommend the extraction of impacted wisdom teeth because of the problems they may cause, including infection, decay of adjacent teeth, gum disease, cysts, Dr. Adam Lalonde and tumors. Wisdom teeth that have already erupted also may need to be removed if they are nonfunctional, badly decayed, interfering with your bite, involved with or at risk of gum disease, or causing problems with adjacent teeth or restorations. Some dentists also may recommend removing wisdom teeth before they’re fully erupted in order to prevent such problems from developing. Patients with wisdom teeth that need to be removed may experience a variety of symptoms, including pain, infection, and swelling of face or gum line. Your dentist can determine whether you need your wisdom teeth removed by taking x-rays and examining your mouth. Wisdom teeth that are not removed should be monitored, as they may cause problems later in life. Extraction is usually an outpatient procedure, performed by a dentist or oral surgeon using a local sedation or general anesthetic. We are able to extract many wisdom teeth here in our office, comfortably. For more information, call our office or visit us at www.losfresnosdental.com

city of Los Fresnos Notice of Public Hearing
► CONTINUED FROM PAGE 1 network by June 30, 2022. It also announced it will shut down T-Mobile's 3G UMTS network by July 1, 2022, but has not yet announced a shutdown date for its 2G network. If your mobile carrier is not listed here, you may still be affected. Many carriers, such as Cricket, Boost, Straight Talk, and several Lifeline mobile service providers, utilize AT&T's, Verizon's, and TMobile's networks. Note: These are dates for completing the shutdowns. Carriers may begin retiring parts of their networks sooner. What do I need to do? Contact your mobile provider or consult your provider's website for more information about their 3G retirement plan and whether your phone, or other connected device, may be affected. It is important to plan now so that you don't lose connectivity, including the ability to call 911. Some carrier websites provide lists of devices that will no longer be supported after 3G networks are shut down. You may need to upgrade to a newer device to ensure that you can stay connected, and carriers may be offering discounted or free upgrades to help consumers who need to upgrade their phones. Some devices may only require a software update to enable VoLTE (HD Voice) or other advanced services. If you purchased your phone independent of a mobile provider, you should be able to check whether your device is 4G
LTE (with VoLTE or HD Voice) enabled by checking your phone's settings or user manual, or by searching your phone's model number on the internet, to determine whether you need to purchase a new device or install a software update. Does this just impact phones? No, other devices, such as certain medical devices, tablets, smart watches, vehicle SOS services, home security systems, and other connected products may be using 3G network services. And don't forget about devices that use cellular connectivity as a backup when a wired internet connection goes down. If the device is not labeled, contact the monitoring company or other service provider to confirm how the device connects and whether your device may be impacted. Why are 3G networks being phased out? As mobile carriers seek to upgrade their networks to use the latest technologies, they periodically shut down older services, such as 3G, to free up spectrum and infrastructure to support new services, such as 5G. Similar transitions have happened before. For example, some mobile carriers shut down their 2G networks when they upgraded their networks to support 4G services. Mobile carriers have the flexibility to choose the types of technologies and services they deploy, including when they decommission older services in
favor of newer services to meet consumer demands. Need Other Help Staying Connected? As mentioned above, your mobile service provider may be offering special deals on new devices, including some deals that might include a free cell phone. In addition, although they do not cover the cost of new devices, other FCC programs may be able to assist eligible consumers with the cost of phone or internet services: The FCC's Lifeline program may be able to assist eligible consumers in getting connected to phone and internet services. The program provides a discount on phone service for qualifying low-income consumers to ensure that all Americans have the opportunities and security that phone service brings, including being able to connect to jobs, family and emergency services. You can learn more about the Lifeline Program and find out if you may be eligible https://www.fcc.gov/lifeline-consumers. In addition, The FCC's Emergency Broadband Benefit Program provides a temporary discount of up to $50 per month towards broadband service for eligible households during the COVID-19 pandemic. You can learn more about the Emergency Broadband Benefit Program, what it covers, and find out if you may be eligible https:// www.fcc.gov/broadbandbenefit.

CTE Teacher Receives New Screen Printing Equipment Celeste Cortez, Staff Writer for The Talons, Los Fresnos' Student Newspaper December 21, 2021
Los Fresnos High School CTE graphic design and illustration teacher Ivan Hernandez recently received new screen printing equipment for his classes through the CTE department. Among the new equipment he received is a 6 colored press, which will allow him to print with more
color, a conveyor dryer, which cures prints, a flash cure, an exposure unit, and a washout booth. “With all of the new equipment, I want to teach my students how to screen print and run a shop and eventually, with all of the skills they’ve learned in the class, compete in a SkillsUSA competition,” Hernandez said. Not only will the new equipment be used for his classes, but the school will
be allowed to use the equipment too. “Eventually, I want to use the screen printing equipment for school services such as making shirts for band, football, and other school activities,” Hernandez said. Hernandez has been teaching for 17 years and for four years at LFHS. Before teaching graphic design and illustration, he taught art and special education.

December Weather Can Be No Los Fresnos High School & Holiday for Farmers, Ranchers Los Fresnos United DECA
Earns Chapter Honor

By Gary Joiner Publisher December weather in Texas can be a gift or a lump of coal in your stocking. Unfortunately, this year, farmers and ranchers in the Texas Panhandle would soon just return what Mother Nature gave them last week. A lingering drought set the stage. A fierce wind storm finished the
job, destroying much of the area’s wheat crop. Green fields are now brown and likely a total loss for many farmers. High winds also fanned the flames of wildfires, threatening farms, ranches and communities. Blowing dust, smoke from wildfires and heavy winds caused accidents and power outages. The Panhandle hasn’t received rain in nearly 70 days. The drought,
punctuated by the wind storm, was just too much for the struggling wheat. But the failed wheat crop comes on the heels of one of the best cotton crops for some Panhandle farmers. Such is the nature of farming in Texas. You embrace the good years. A farmer’s faith, hope and love keep them going. That’s appropriate for the month of December.
Los Fresnos, TX Distict 1 – Los Fresnos High School and Los Fresnos United DECA in Los Fresnos, (South) Texas was recently awarded the Community Service Achievement Level Award for the 20212022 school year. The results were announced on decadirect.org. Each year, DECA recognizes leading chapters that have built strong local programs focused on serving an exceptional number of members, advisors, alumni and business partners. These chapters and
individuals dedicate their year to academic and career preparation, community service projects, membership recruitment, school outreach activities and other DECArelated endeavors. The chapter’s advisor and student leaders have demonstrated extraordinary commitment to DECA. In DECA’s community service campaign, chapters held a community service activity, engaged at least 75% of its members, and created at least one form of publicity or
promotion. “Anyone can participate in an activity, but it means so much more when you do it with your heart!” – Mindy Quiroz Of the 3,000 DECA chapters, only 450 chapters earned recognition in DECA’s chapter campaigns and only 775 chapters earned recognition in DECA’s membership campaign. The DECA chapter advisor at Los Fresnos High and Los Fresnos United is Mindy Quiroz.
