Spring Football Game to Feature Falcons, Band 2021 Falcon roster to be split into Maroon and Gold teams. (LFCISD)It is football time in June as the Falcon football team split in two in the Maroon and Gold game at 7 p.m. Friday, June 4, at Leo Aguilar Memorial Stadium. It was the first spring game for new head football coach and Athletics Director David Cantu, who was hired in January to take over the program. UIL regulations allow Class 5A or 6A schools to participate in spring training if they choose, thus bypassing an extra week of workouts in August. The Falcon teams were split evenly into Maroon and Gold teams. The LFHS Band also performed at halftime of the game, and play from the north end zone.

Falcons Look to New Era in 2021

By KEVIN NARRO Los Fresnos News LOS FRESNOS- The Falcons are looking to turn the page from 2020 and start fresh in 2021. Back in January, Los Fresnos gave the keys to a familiar face. Former Brownsville Veterans head football coach David Cantu. Cantu who is a Los Fresnos graduate, returns to his alma mater and will direct the Falcon ship in 2021. The Falcons are currently in the middle of spring football, something that was

not on the table at all last year because of Covid-19. With Cantu dialing up a new system, having spring ball will help Los Fresnos get one step ahead for the fall.

“It has been great,” Cantu said. “It has just given us more time to install what we do. Right now with the numbers we are OK but we are continuing to grow with our numbers.” With a limited season last year, Los Fresnos went 2-4 overall and went 1-2 in district play. The last playoff trip was in 2019 in a bidistrict loss to Weslaco. “The kids have done a fantastic job on learning the new system,” Cantu said. “They are a quick study and are learning very well.”

Falcons Continue Historic Run into Region Final By KEVIN NARRO Los Fresnos News

LOS FRESNOS-The Falcons are the last baseball team standing in the Rio Grande Valley and are in uncharted waters. The Falcons will meet Smithson Valley Thursday in a one game playoff, with the winner punching their ticket to

the state tournament. Last week, Los Fresnos upset Round Rock in a one game playoff 11-2, sealing their first ever region final berth. In their offensive explosion against Round Rock, Los Fresnos collected ten hits and took advantage of three errors and used a key seven run third inning and sealed the win with a three run

The Next Chapter

Hide and Seek

By Nandy Ekle Part 3 Once again she thought she heard a slight giggle from somewhere in the house. So help her, when she found those two, their backsides would smart. She was their mother and enough was enough. “Bethany! Toby! Come out here right now!” Standing in the hall, she thought of all the other places she had known them to hide. When a new “secret place” sprang to her mind, she stomped through the house with increasing speed to that spot. Every cabinet had been searched, every closet opened and gone through. She ran to the laundry room and opened the dryer, horrified that the idea of

hiding inside the drum might come to them. She felt a small wave of relief and took a deep breath of air, patting her chest with her hand when she didn’t find them. She went into the living room and moved the sofa away from the wall. A few Lincoln Logs and broken crayons hid there, but no children. In the kitchen next to the pantry was the garage door. She didn’t think they would go out there, but she could be wrong. If you tell a kid not to do something, that’s immediately what they want to do. And she and Doug had been very explicit and precise about telling them to stay out of the garage without her or their father with them. As she put her hand on

the doorknob, once more she thought she heard the tiny little giggle sound that Toby made when he tried not to laugh. She turned her head to catch him, but only the air greeted her. Pulling the garage door open, she walked out. Doug, an amateur mechanic, had filled the garage with machines and tools for his tinkering enjoyment. Thus the reason Doug and Anna didn’t want the kids piddling around in the garage without a parent. Doug had draped sheets over some of the hulking motors and more dangerous paraphernalia, and the effect was a little spooky. But it also created a world of hiding places. Anna’s tears threatened to unleash as a picture flashed through her mind of a baby girl on the ground with a monstrous motor block on top of her, followed by the picture of a young boy with a hammer stuck in his head. She resolved that as soon as Doug came in from his trip, she would demand he get rid of the bulk of the mess. As she walked around, she lifted covers and halfheartedly poked at masses, calling out the children’s

names from time to time with a shaky and slobbery voice, but no answer came. The thick air smelled of oil and rusty metal and she decided in a hurry that they simply were not there. Heading back to the kitchen door, she thought of where else they might have gone. There really weren’t many places left. She wondered if they had been following her. Maybe that’s why she kept hearing their little giggles. She went to the sofa in the living room to sit and wait for them to come out of hiding. Anna looked around the room from her spot on the couch. She didn’t hold to keeping a lot of pictures and fluffy flowers and things on the walls. The television sat against the wall furthest from the entry way, which was partitioned off by a shoulder-high book shelf with an empty planter box inserted in the top. In the bookshelf Anna kept a set of encyclopedias and children’s books. In school, Toby was learning to do research on the internet, but here at home both kids still liked to take the books off the shelf and look at them and ask questions about the pictures.

Behind the couch was a wedding picture of her and Doug, school pictures of Toby and of Bethany and an old calendar that she kept up there because the picture on the calendar was of the whole family. She twisted around and looked at the photos sending a psychic message to the kids telling them that they needed to get ready for school. After fifteen minutes and still no children, the panic button in her heart refused to be turned off and her tears ran like a burst water pipe. “Come on, kids! Get out here now! You are in so much trouble!” She still got no answer. Her eyes wandered to the phone stand so that she could call the police, but the handset was gone. Her hands

jumped up and covered her eyes to catch the tears. “Oh, Dear Lord in Heaven! They did something with the phone before they went to bed! I can’t even think about where to start looking for that!” She knew the phone stand had a button to make it ring so it could be found, but she never could remember how to do it. Horror rose up in her chest from her throat and brought a new load of tears with it. Her babies were gone! They were no where in the house! Her screaming began as she ran through the front door to look in the bushes. When she didn’t find them there, she ran almost to the street calling their names in a state of hysteria.

However, the reason why I love learning so much is that my mom dedicated so much time to teaching me from a young age. If she had not given me such an incredible head start I wouldn’t be where I am today. Even when school work became too complicated and time-

No. 5-ranked student will attend Ivy League school Yale University. (photo: LFCISD) consuming for my parents to guide me through, they were both there to provide moral support. They’ve definitely wiped a few tears caused by seemingly endless homework assignments. Importance of High Academic Standards: Neither of my parents had the opportunity to attend a formal college or university. They have worked

incredibly hard to get me where I am today and I do everything with thoughts of them in the back of my mind. My mom and dad were the only reason why I did not give up completely whenever school felt like it was consuming me. They were my motivation to pay attention in class and ask questions when I had no clue what was going on. Whenever I didn’t do as well as I had hoped on an assignment, I felt like I had failed them more than I had failed myself. Thankfully, my mom helped me grow past that pressure and made me realize that I had to start doing things because they made me proud. Career Plans: I’m honestly still not entirely sure what I want to do when I’m finished with college. My dream life would honestly consist of me being an awardwinning actress who may more may not win Best Actress at the 100th Annual Academy Awards. After all, Meryl Streep and Angela Bassett both

attended Yale. More realistically, I’d love to take on a job that requires me to move overseas. Investigative journalism or working at an embassy would be incredible, and it would provide me with the opportunity to experience different cultures and meet new and interesting people. Advice to younger students to succeed academically: If I can give any advice to students in middle school, it would be to have fun and not take life too seriously. I know school can suck the joy out of life at times but try to focus on the good memories, even if they are few and far between. Putting an unnecessary amount of stress on yourself will only make completing the school day more difficult. Failing a test may feel like the end of the world and can make you question whether or not your dreams are too big. I promise they aren’t. You just have to learn to say “Oh well,” and move on to the next obstacle.

HHSC Launches Online Behavioral Health Awareness Training Free eLearning Empowers Public, Tackles Stigma AUSTIN – The Texas Health and Human Services Commission is launching a new behavioral health awareness eLearning series to empower families with more knowledge and understanding of behavioral health conditions that impact more than 3 million Texans each year. “Understanding is powerful, and Texas HHSC saw a need for people who want to understand their own condition or a loved one’s condition to learn more about behavioral health and share what they learn with others,” said Sonja Gaines, HHS deputy executive commissioner for Intellectual and Developmental Disability and Behavioral Health Services. “When people learn more about behavioral health, they can overcome challenges and the stigma associated with mental illness to seek treatment and take that first step

toward creating a better life for themselves and others.” HHSC contracted with UT Health Science Center at San Antonio to develop and create an eLearning series, which is free to the public at https:// mentalhealthtx.org/ resources/. The series’ intended audience is not only those dealing directly with behavioral health conditions, but also their friends, family members, and advocates. There are 10 interactive learning modules and each module takes no more than 30 minutes to complete and is completely anonymous. The series empowers and prepares communities to better understand signs and symptoms of mental illness, decreases stigma, and promotes emotional, psychological, and social well-being for Texans. “Many behavioral health conditions are common but still misunderstood. This eLearning series

sheds light on these conditions,” said Dr. Natalie Maples, assistant professor at The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio. “We hope that these modules help to give someone in need of direction a way forward, either as the recipient of help and support or as the supporter.” Topics covered in the series include anxiety disorders, depression, substance use disorders, mood disorders, trauma and post-traumatic stress disorder, aging and behavioral health, psychosis and schizophrenia, serious emotional disturbances in children, and suicide prevention. The project was funded by the Mental Health Block administered by Texas HHSC. Helping Small Businesses Thrive in Today’s Digital World (StatePoint) Small businesses were hit particularly hard by the pandemic, with nearly 10 million American small businesses closing their doors at least temporarily over the past 15 months. Despite an uncertain economy, small business owners were resilient, creative and agile, shifting their business models to take advantage of e-commerce, many for the first time. Before COVID-19, more than one in three small businesses had never reported a digital sale. Today, nearly seven out of eight small businesses are selling goods and services online. For the millions of resilient small businesses still operating, the mass move to online and mobile shopping ushers in a new era of opportunity. At the same time, additional resources will be needed to support them. “For over a year, small businesses have faced one unimaginable challenge after another,” says Mike Katz, executive vice president, T-Mobile for Business. “At a time when mobile connectivity and internet access are required to advertise services, sell products and interact with customers, no small business should be without these necessary resources.” To help fuel the resurgence of small business, T-Mobile is offering the following solutions and benefits, available today: • New smartphone

plans. Staying viable in a mobile-first world requires affordable connectivity. To that end, T-Mobile is offering new smartphone plans purpose-built for business. Every plan includes unlimited talk, text, and data over America’s largest, fastest, and most reliable 5G network, and high-speed mobile hotspot data to power whole teams onthe-go. • High-speed internet. As bad as broadband access can be for consumers who must deal with high-prices and sparse competition, it’s often actually worse for small businesses. Many business plans from traditional ISPs deliver the same service levels as residential plans, but for often twice the price. Small Business Internet from T-Mobile delivers fast, reliable connectivity without annual contracts or costly surprises, along with tech support from dedicated experts. • Digital outreach. Today, two-thirds of Facebook users visit a local business page at least once weekly. In a world that packed a decade of digital transformation into the last year, it often takes digital savvy and the ability to reach customers online to succeed. Through a new program, Facebook Advertising on Us, small businesses can receive up to three oneon-one consultations with a Facebook Marketing Expert, along with

educational resources. Plus, every small business on T-Mobile with three or more lines can get $200 in digital advertising to market their company on Facebook and Instagram. “By pairing fast, reliable internet with digital tools, training and marketing support, we can help small businesses connect with their communities,” says Mark D’Arcy, Facebook vice president of Global Business Marketing. For additional resources, visit t-mobile. com/opportunity. To access a growing library of new original content on entrepreneurship, visit t-mobile.com/ business/magenta-edge. Finally, beginning June 1, 2021 through July 9, 2021, small businesses nationwide are invited to visit t-mobile.com/ opportunity-sweepstakes to enter for a chance be one of six small businesses to win a 5G smartphone or tablet; or one of five to win a package of five 5G devices; or one of two to win a full 5G makeover with five 5G smartphones, a 5G tablet and $5000 to spend on anything. Small businesses are critical to the prosperity of local communities and the economy at-large. Thanks to new resources, they’ll be equipped to take advantage of the opportunities that exist in today’s digital world.
