By Nelda Briones Los Fresnos News It’s that time of year again! School is just right around the corner for most School districts in the valley. The Los Fresnos CISD will return to 100% in-person learning on Monday August 16. The district website mentioned that about

10,500 students will be reporting back to school this year. Due to restrictions being placed on school districts by Governor Abbots Executive order GA-36, which went into effect this May, the district will not be requiring mask wearing but will recommend it. This order prevents

TSC-BROWNSVILLE, Texas (July 30, 2021) – With two younger siblings diagnosed with respiratory conditions, Troy Zepeda wanted to find a career where he could help them, and others, breathe easier. Taking to the internet for research,

according to the CDC would-be screen testing, ventilation, handwashing and respiratory etiquette, staying home when sick and getting tested, contact tracing in combination with quarantine and isolation, and cleaning and disinfection. COVID-19 prevention strategies remain critical to protect people, including students, teachers, and staff, who are not fully vaccinated, especially in areas of moderateto high community transmission levels. If a positive case is reported to the district, it will then be reported to the Texas Department of State Health Services and parents within the district. school districts from enacting mask mandates. Due to no mask mandate, many parents are concerned and have pushed for a virtual learning option, but state lawmakers failed to pass the Funding Bill for the upcoming year. The bill would have provided funding for schools that

planned to offer remote learning options for the next school year. The district will continue to follow CDC guidelines as well as federal and state mandates. All students and staff will be trained in safety protocols and guidelines. Cleaning and sanitation efforts throughout campuses and on busses will continue. The CDC recommends schools to maintain at least 3 ft of physical distance between students within classrooms, combined with indoor mask wearing by people who are not fully vaccinated, to reduce transmission risk. If it’s not possible to maintain these distances, it is important to layer other prevention strategies, such as indoor masking. Other important layers of prevention to keep schools safe

he discovered the Respiratory Care Science program at Texas Southmost College, and he knew immediately this was the career path he was going to choose. “I’ve always wanted a career in the medical field, and this was just

the right program,” said Zepeda. “I was fortunate enough to find this program so close to home and now I’m a 21-year-old with a college degree. I thank the Lord above and my family for their guidance and support.” The San Benito native graduated in May with an associate degree in Respiratory Care Science and since then has become a registered respiratory therapist and will begin his career at Valley Baptist Medical Center in Harlingen later this month. “I got everything I needed from this program to start a career I love,” said Zepeda. “It helped me become who I am today.” From its structure and instructors to hands-on training, Zepeda said he had the chance to learn the ins and outs of the

respiratory profession and understand the procedures and processes of the career. “This program was rigorous and challenging, especially completing it during COVID, but I took it one day at a time,” he said. “To have found what I want to do for the rest of my life at a young age is a blessing.” Zepeda added that the training he received is now like muscle memory and he is confident and more than prepared to fulfill his duty as a respiratory therapist. “I’m only about to start my career, but I can tell It’s going to be very rewarding,” said Zepeda. “Everything we do positively impacts our patients and their families. As a respiratory therapist it’s amazing to see the

improvements your work can make for someone who needs help and how we can make a difference in a life.” He added that he hopes to continue making a difference as his career progresses, so he ultimately wants to pursue a bachelor’s degree and master’s degree in the field or as a physician assistant. “I got my start at TSC and I’m a proud alumnus. It has given me the motivation to keep going and aim high,” he said. “It is my second home, and I recommend it to anyone looking for a college, a career or to improve their skills. Your life can change at TSC and for the better.” For more information about TSC’s Respiratory Care Science program, or to register, visit tsc. edu. Fall 2021 classes begin August 23.

Ask Our Dentists by DR. ADAM LALONDE

Q: I am a new denture wearer and have found it to be a daily struggle. My dentist has suggested dental implants, but I am wary. Could dental implants really improve my situation? ANSWERED by DR.ADAM LALONDE: Implants are quickly becoming the treatment of choice for many patients. Research indicates that the public is becoming more aware of the benefits of dental implants. All too often, extractions are performed, dentures are placed, & the patient goes home without a thought about the jawbone Dr. Adam Lalonde underneath the newly extracted teeth. Many patients are unaware that bone loss in their jaw will always follow the loss of a tooth. Over time, bone loss can cause changes in a patient’s facial appearance, speech & diet. Before dental implants, there were no viable solutions available for people who lost all their teeth & wanted lower denture stability. Today, it is possible to replace complete dentition with dental implants & fixed bridges that result in a long-term, stable & highly esthetic solution. Implants anchor natural-looking artificial teeth & keep bone structure intact. Dental implants can restore normal eating and speaking abilities, increase denture retention, & enhance facial appearance. With today’s advances in implant technology, most patients can be treated with implants. Patients who were unable to enjoy the benefits of implants ten years ago are most likely candidates for implant dentistry today. Call your dentist to set up a comprehensive exam or call our office for a complimentary 15 minute implant consultation. Now, is the time; here is the place.

LANDON JENNINGS (LFN) - Summer is quickly evaporating and that means football is just around the corner. Before the first snap everyone is undefeated (Even the Houston Texans). Every fan can dream that this is the season that their team is going to the Super Bowl. The massive Dallas Cowboy fan base is no different. It has been 25 years since the Cowboys beat Pittsburg in the Super Bowl. Since then, the cowboys have not been back to the big game. All of the NFL rookies this season were not even alive the last time “America’s Team” was in the Superbowl. But this may be the season that turns those frowns upside down. The offense looks good enough. The real question is the defense. No one can predict the future but it should be a good team to watch while we find out. 25 years for an NFL

Championship game appearance may feel like a long time considering the Cowboys rich history. But 10 franchises are currently waiting longer than that. Here is a list of those teams whose fans have been more long suffering. 10. Jacksonville Jaguars. 26 years. Never been to the Super Bowl in 26 years of existence. 9. Los Angeles Chargers. 26 years. Lost Super Bowl XXIX to the 49ers by a score of 49 to 26. 8. Buffalo Bills. 27 years. Lost Super Bowl XXVIII to the Cowboys by a score of 30 to 13. 7. Washington Football Team. 29 years. Won Super Bowl XXVI over the Bills 37 to 24. 6. Cincinnati Bengals. 32 years. Lost Super Bowl XXIII to San Francisco 20 to 16. 5. Miami Dolphins. 36 years. Lost Super Bowl XIX to San Francisco 38 to 16. 4. Minnesota Vikings.

44 years. Lost Super Bowl XI to the Raiders 32 to 14. 3. New York Jets. 52 years. Won Super Bowl III over Baltimore 16 to 7 2. Cleveland Browns. 52 years. Never been to the Super Bowl. Championships yes, but not in the Super Bowl era. (Also remember the Baltimore Ravens were technically an expansion team. So the Browns Franchise was just dormant from 1995 to 1999.) 1. Detroit Lions. 55 years. No Super Bowl appearance despite being a team from the beginning. Honorable Mention: Houston Texans, 19 years. The Texans are the only other NFL team to never make it to a Super Bowl. A streak that is sure to remain unbroken this season. If one of these droughts is to come to an end this season, it will most likely be the Dallas Cowboys or the Cleveland Browns. But that is just my opinion.

The Next Chapter The Pet Ghost

By Nandy Ekle Chapter 6

He crawled on his hands and knees around the edge of the bed looking closely at the carpet, and occasionally he raised the bed skirt and peered. I thought he looked silly as he slowly moved from one side of the bed to the other on the floor. He stopped at the head of the bed, stood up and faced the little bathroom. “It’s coming from there.” Do ghosts use the toilet? That’s all that room contained: a toilet, a shower, and a sink. He walked to the door jamb and stopped. At that

moment Leslie touched me on the shoulder. “We have to cut to a commercial. Dr. Simon, can we hold until we get back from the break?” He stopped exactly where he stood. “Sure.” Leslie informed the viewers that we would return in a moment. The cameraman and light man pushed their way to the bathroom door. “Dora,” Dr. Simon started. “There is definitely something here.” My hand curled into a fist and I bit my own knuckles with anxiety. Chuckling nervously, I tried to sound like I was discounting his opinion.

“I think the presence coming from this little room is angrier than the other presence. You could be in some danger.” “Well, it’s a bathroom—not always a pleasant room.” I hoped my humor would diffuse an uncomfortable situation. “Okay, kids, we’re going back on.” Leslie sounded cutesy. Emily nodded her head at the cameraman and Leslie reminded the world that Dr. Simon was about to walk into the bathroom where a malevolent spirit seemed to be hiding. I pushed my way past the camera guy and light guy, determined to laugh when nothing happened. He walked all the way in, placed his hand on the shower curtain and paused. He looked at Leslie. Leslie looked at Emily who had her hand at the Bluetooth apparatus in her ear and her eyes looked far away. When she nodded at Leslie, Leslie nodded to Barry who yanked the shower

curtain back and saw exactly what I thought he’d see—absolutely nothing. He turned his face to me again and I just almost knew I saw something pass across his pupils. Was he teasing me? “I might like to come back and set up some equipment in here.” He looked at me, all nice and normal again. “I just want you to be safe.” “Believe me, this bedroom and tiny bath have always been the safest place in the house.” Leslie addressed the camera. “Ladies and gentlemen, at this time we’re going to take another break while we set up for our séance.” She grinned like the Cheshire Cat, waved, and the heat light went off. We all turned and headed back to the front of the house. “I brought séance equipment,” she said as we entered the living room. The camera guy and the light guy put their equipment on the floor and went out to the

truck. I slipped into the kitchen to recompose myself. I had never been part of a séance before and felt excited. But

Economic Resilience, Bright Outlook

The Port of Brownsville proved resilient in 2020, moving a record-setting 11.6 million short tons of diverse cargo with operating revenues of $37 million. Photo from Portofbrownsville.com Editor’s Note: This article is featured in the latest edition of the Port of Brownsville Directory

The Port of Brownsville has come a long way in its 85-year history, finding ways to overcome challenges and ever-changing global markets. The port proved resilient throughout 2020 in the face of the COVID-19 pandemic and its related economic challenges, moving a recordsetting 11.6 million short tons of diverse cargo with operating

revenues of $37 million, far above 2019’s high watermark of $24.6 million, providing the foundation for continued investment in economic growth, job creation and environmental stewardship for today and future generations. Over the past several years, the port has continued to strengthen its financial position, increasing cash reserves while investing in key infrastructure improvements. The Port of Brownsville ranks third among U.S. ports

for “strong financial resilience” surveyed in a 2020 report issued by Moody’s Investor Services, underscoring the ongoing value of the port’s prudent financial stewardship in light of economic impacts from the worldwide pandemic. Moody’s analysis evaluated American ports on a range of key factors surrounding financial responsibility like the ability to handle the impact of a significant decline in cargo volume, financial liquidity and

debt service coverage ratio. Weighing these important factors, the analysis ranks the Port of Brownsville among the most stable in the nation and better able to weather today’s unique economic challenges. Moody’s also highlighted the important advantages of a “landlord” business model – in which authorities like the Port of Brownsville partner with tenants primarily through stable long term leases – versus the “operator” model

in which authorities conduct daily operations directly for port customers, which can result in “high revenue volatility in periods of stress.” Moody’s concluded that “the landlord model has historically proven to stabilize revenues,” underscoring the Port of Brownsville’s advantage in managing risk as the largest land-owning port in the United States, with more than 40,000 acres and available resources for large-scale industrial developers. The report also highlights the Port of Brownsville’s strong 5.0 Debt Service Coverage Ratio (DSCR), which is more than double that of most other ports Moody’s analyzed and indicates “a strong position from which to absorb and manage revenue pressures.” DSCR is a standard measure of cash flow available to pay current debt obligations. Through such careful financial management, “ports’ debt service coverage and liquidity are key credit features that enable them to manage

revenue disruptions and other extraordinary challenges in this period of unprecedented stress,” the report states. This prudent financial stewardship is the result of the thoughtful and strategic planning set by the Brownsville Navigation District Board of Commissioners to protect the interests of port tenants and users, constituents and port assets. The five-member elected commission is chartered by the State of Texas and charged with setting port policy and approving major expenditures. BND Commission members are elected to four-year staggered terms and meet twice monthly, governing the activities of the port. The BND Commission is comprised of Chairman Sergio Tito Lopez, Vice Chairman Ralph Cowen, Secretary Esteban Guerra and Assistant Secretaries John Wood and John Reed. Management of the port day-to-day activities is accomplished by Port Director and CEO Eduardo A. Campirano.
