For nearly 50 years, Residents of Los Fresnos have fallen in love with the tasty, delicious homemade meals from Tapia’s Cafe. Just off Highway 100 and a few minutes away from Leo Aguilar Memorial Stadium sits this staple in Los Fresnos. For many years, Tapia’s cafe has been known for their delicious homestyle mexican cooking. Most people however, are surprised to know that Tapia’s Cafe makes custom cakes to order.

Tapia’s cafe was founded in 1975 by Ovilia M. Tapia. Known as “Bila” by her friends and family, her story begins long before Tapia’s opened its doors.

“She had previously worked for Luby’s, VICC and Rancho Viejo, where her specialty was pastries and deserts” said Ovilia Tapia, the current owner of Tapia’s.

“Even after establishing the cafe, she continued making cakes for all occasions. She would bake and decorate even after the restaurant was closed for the day.”

It was not long before Tapia’s became an all out family business. “My father Francisco Tapia “Pancho” started helping her run the front end of the restaurant,” said

Tapia. “Although he was not a baker, he always helped with deliveries and moral support.” It did not take long for the late Francisco Tapia to become a favorite amongst customers and family friends. “To this day, after almost 20 years of his passing, I still have customers who come in and tell me stories of his quick wit and friendly manner,” said Tapia.

Ovilia Tapia joined the family business 23 years ago after unexpected circumstances. “I started working at Tapia’s in 1999 after the school I was teaching at Closed down,” said Tapia. “At first, I only did their bookkeeping. Eventually, I became more involved with the day-to-day operations.”

When Tapia became more involved with Tapia’s daily operations, she learned a lot more about the baking side of operations. “I began helping Bila with her cake orders in 2002. At that time, I would bake and she would decorate,” said Tapia. “Soon after I started helping with the decorating until eventually Bila decided to let me take over the cake orders.”

While gaining a lot of experience working alongside Bila, it was not long before Ovilia was put to the test. “I

remember staying up late making flowers for the first big order, it was for an Anniversary,” said Tapia. “I was so terrified during the drive to deliver this cake. I could see how proud Bila was of me.”

After that, the rest became history. “I now have over 20 years of experience making custom cakes,” said Tapia. “Each Cake is designed and priced on an individual basis. Each cake is different! Orders are limited per week and a two weeks notice is appreciated.”

To this day, Tapia’s cafe continues to be family owned and operated, and their business and story continues to grow and grow. Tapia’s cafe is open Tuesday through Saturday from 7am to 1pm, with breakfast and lunch served all day.

Los Fresnos, Texas —

On Thursday, August 18th, two master gardeners shared their passion along with much insight on growing your own garden!

Norma Cruz, a Cameron County Master gardener along with Janet Schofield also a Master gardener are both volunteers for our

local Nature Park here in Los Fresnos.

Norma led the presentation by first bringing up the topic of Local Environmental Conditions and how it can affect our plants. She provided a website to keep individuals up-to-date on drought conditions.

Currently, with the recent rains, we are actually in better conditions the

National Weather Service in Brownsville put out a statement saying with the recent tropical disturbance has actually brought the much-needed rains to our area; leaving only a few portions in the far upper Valley in drought conditions.

Norma Cruz shares that growing plants isn’t as difficult as you might think. She says stresses the

solution is to grow native plants. She says, “These are plants that have evolved in a specific area and have been growing there naturally for hundreds of years.” Adapting to the local climate, rainfall patterns, and temperatures. She also shares that our native plants tend to grow deeper roots as well.

The benefits

Native plants will need less maintenance, saving money, and providing native habitat. Native Plants Feed and House Native Pollinators! Incorporating more native plants into our area helps to reinstate our commercially influenced environment back to its natural roots.

Cruz mentions that a few years ago we had a vortex freeze, “It kinda wiped us all out, but what remained?” She says, “All the Native Plants.”

How do you get started?

Cruz encourages the

community to reach out to local nursery professionals, listed below are just a few to start with:

Heeps LRGV Native Plant Nursery – Harlingen, Tx 956-457-6834

Grimsell Seed Co. –Harlingen, TX 956-4230370

Waugh’s Nursery –McAllen, TX 956-686-5591

River Oaks Nursery –San Benito, TX 956-3994078

In the presentation, she also mentions many different websites to visit like agrilifeextension. tamu.edu you can also contact the Texas Master Gardeners at the Cameron County Extension office for advice/help, and their are tons of youtube videos that can help. Cruz says one that she loves is a Youtube channel called Central Texas Gardeners; Growing a Greener World.

Some native plants she mentioned include:

Vitex, Texas Lilac Turk’s Cap Fiddlewood Esperanza Cenizo Lantana Gregg’s Mistflower Blue and Red Salvia Plumbago Frog fruit Scorpion Tale Trumpet Vine

She says “So Remember… Start small, assess the sun conditions, create a native plant wish list, time planting with the best season, use local native plant nurseries, and do your research.”

Norma Cruz ended the presentation with a quote by Doug Tallamy, saying, “Because life is fueled by the energy captured from the sun by plants, it will be the plants that we use in our gardens that determine what nature will be like 10, 20, and 50 years from now.”

Many people brush too hard or use a toothbrush that is too hard; a “soft” toothbrush actually cleans best. Vigorous brushing is not necessary, in fact, it can be harmful. After years of hard brushing, erosion of the enamel and gums can result. This can also cause teeth to become stained more easily. Their appearance, in general, takes on a yellow or darkened look. Also, the gums can become prone to infection. So, lighten up on that toothbrush! After you have flossed thoroughly, brush gently with a soft- bristled toothbrush, and ease up on your handle-grip. The trick is to concentrate on becoming more aware of the amount of pressure you’re exerting. Slow down and give your teeth and gums the attention they need and gentleness they deserve. Also, be sure to replace your toothbrush when it first shows signs of wear, and schedule regular visits with your dentist and dental hygienist. They will help you to monitor the health of your teeth and gums. Our patients receive a complimentary new toothbrush and floss on every check-up appointment! If you have any questions about brushing techniques and/or toothbrushes we’d be happy to answer them for you.

To get his plowing Under way.

With strength of purpose

And hand on rein

He plows and breaks

The sod again.

For furrow straight

He sights a post

His mules get thirsty And balk for water.

Mr. Orta comments on one of updated USA Mullet Championships ranking posts saying, "BEHOLD MY SON WHOM I LOVE AND AM WELL PLEASED WITH ! Epic Orta lives up to his name. I gave him that name because i knew he was destined for awesomeness . Love you son. You're such a treasure to me.

HALLELUYAH"

Rio Grande Valley — Epic Orta is a kid from La Joya Texas who is representing the Rio Grande Valley in the Kids National Mullet Competition put on by USA Mullet Championships. Recently, Epic Orta has been taking over the news being on Foxnews, the Fox morning show, and CBS, along with local coverage from KRGV, the Monitor.

Epic Orta is from La Joya, Texas, at the very start of the competition Orta was placed as second in the nation, and by the third day, being neck and neck with Emmit Bailey, Epic held 3,665 votes for his name! It quickly took off with having 6,332 votes by the fourth day. It seemed as though he was gonna be taking first; being the only contestant to represent the Valley!

This had all the news and media over Epic, putting him on the front page of the Monitor.

On August 21st, 2022, the results had been final, and Orta finished in second place with 8,404 votes. The battle was fought long and hard, in the end, he came out acting like a “true Texas Gentleman.”

The story doesn’t end there. Many of Epic’s supporters were very moved by his sportsmanlike attitude and wanted to do something special.

Monty Awbrey and Diana Awbrey from Longhorn Services in Mission were very moved by Epic's reaction to receiving second place, that they made a phone call and made sure Epic got a trophy and plaque. Mrs. Orta posted on Monday: “Guuuuys!!! Monty Awbrey and Diana Canales Awbrey from Longhorn

Services watched the live video of Epic's reaction to getting second place in the National Mullet Championship and were so moved by Epic's sportsmanship that he called E Awards and Gifts (who had also seen Epic's reaction) and they went in on their day off to make Epic a trophy and plaque! I'm fixing to upload the video of Epic's reaction cause omgoodness! Thank you guys so much for making him so happy!!!”

Not only that but also a local resort that works closely with Epic’s Father, Mr. Orta, felt as though Epic deserved the first place win. So, the Isla Grand Beach Resort awarded him the $2,500 prize money on top of the $500 from winning second place. Epic was beyond surprised and gave Mr. Daniel Salazar a huge hug.

Both of Epic’s parents have been so proud of him,

Mrs. Keely Orta shared on Facebook on Monday: “Right now we just received a call that the Texas House Representatives want to make a resolution for Epic and do a presentation and this huge thing and it made me ugly cry ... i wish I could send a message back in time 7 years ago to myself when that neurologist diagnosed Epic with moderate to severe autism and possible mental retardation and it BROKE ME and let me know that it was going to be more than ok... so I'm sending this message out there to all the parents who have children with special needs... it's going to be OK Mama... don't let those diagnosis limit your children... it's not their identity or destiny”

Lastly, Epic had a few words for one of his supporters in a tiktok video

"Thank you for voting for my mullet, George; I appreciate that!"

HHSC Receives Federal Grant to Expand Fraud Prevention Efforts

AUSTIN – The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) has awarded the Texas Health and Human Services Commission (HHSC) a federal grant of more than $400,000 to further the agency’s fraud prevention efforts for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP).

HHSC has prevented the misuse of more than $147 million in public funds since 2017 by identifying and stopping potential fraudulent payments for SNAP, Medicaid, and the

Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) program.

"We are extremely proud to be the recipients of this grant and know that it will have a positive impact on the work we do to put taxpayer dollars to good use in Texas,” said Wayne Salter, deputy executive commissioner for HHSC Access and Eligibility Services.

The grant will be used to provide ongoing support for HHSC staff to receive training, develop innovative fraud prevention training methods, and conduct an

educational campaign for the public on fraud prevention. The grant period is from August 2022 through August 2024.

Misuse of benefits can result in loss of benefits, fines and criminal charges. If someone suspects or knows about fraud, waste or abuse by clients or providers in health and human services programs, HHS urges people to call the HHS Office of the Inspector General at 1-800-436-6184 or visit ReportTexasFraud.com.

[LOS FRESNOS, TX]:

On Friday, August 19th, 2022, the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) celebrated its annual World Humanitarian Day.This is the day that the United Nations, on a global level, recognizes the work of humanitarian aid and relief providers in areas of crisis, disaster, famine, and/or great need.

Among this year’s notable humanitarian aid workers is the Founder and Executive Director of our organization, the Rev. F. Feliberto Pereira.

The Southwest Good Samaritan Ministries is a 501 (C,) non-profit, refugee and outreach ministry of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) denomination. Our

beloved Rev. Pereira is also the senior minister of Iglesia Cristiana Ebenezer

(Discípulos de Cristo) church.

As we rejoice in this news, we also share with you, the City of Los Fresnos, the deep gratitude and regard in which we hold you. Each of you play important, integral roles in the life of our community. You are also great blessings in the life of our organization and ministry. You are—and have always been—beacons of light and support throughout our years. You have championed us, you have supported us, and you have done all things possible to answer the call when we have needed you.

At the Southwest Good Samaritan Ministries we remain ever grateful to be in a position to assist our brothers and sisters from lands near and far. We

are honored to maintain excellent working relationships with various divisions within the Department of Homeland Security locally, where refugees and immigrants are regularly entrusted into our custody once released by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). We are most often a recent arrival's starting pathway to a new life among sponsor families or relatives. By the time they reach us, their journey has been fraught by all manner of trauma, violence and extreme situations; political or religious persecutions; physical and/or sexual assaults--all atop hunger, thirst, and lack of basic necessities.

We strive every day to do good and right by them and for them. Their burden is made light in

large part because we are located in a community that loves and cares for their neighbor, and supports each other’s efforts to aid those in need.

This recognition honors a lifetime of answering the call to aid the least of these, as we are called to do in Matthew 25:40. Our immigrant and refugee friends, their lives, their worth, their futures and our ability to affect that, would not exist without strong community love and support.

We congratulate the Rev. F. Feliberto Pereira, and we thank the City of Los Fresnos, Cameron County, the great State of Texas, and everyone that works every day to make this the best place for families, children and their futures.

In person classes are offered at the Los Fresnos Memorial Park. The current exercise class schedule offers Walking 2 Fitness, Zumba, Body Sculpting, Dance 2 Fitness, Water Aerobics, and Lap Swimming. All classes are taught by Certified Fitness Instructors.

To register for the City’s Community Health Outreach Program contact Los Fresnos Community Health Worker Christine Martinez at 956-312-1406 or email at cmartinez@citylf. us.

Once enrolled in the program participants are able to participate in all classes/activities at no charge as offered by the City of Los Fresnos. The current schedule offers a wide variety of classes to choose from!
