The project has had some slowdowns with prolonged rains and weather interference. But Milum said there “shouldn’t be anymore slowdowns, and they should be moving along pretty well.” When asked about the time-frame of the project he says “original plan was 11 months. Trying to meet
Many are aware of the road work happening on State Highway 100/Ocean Boulevard. Whether you are a resident of Los Fresnos, or you’ve taken your family on a trip this summer to enjoy our amazing South Padre Island, the construction is an obvious inconvenience. Construction started in May, and ever since, traffic has been slower through town. Customers getting in and out of the local businesses and shops around the area has taken longer and become more difficult. In an interview with the City Manager, Mark Milum, explained some of the slowdowns and difficulties construction workers have faced. “There’s been a couple. They located a Gas line that they weren’t aware was there and had to get that moved.” Local Shops Respond to Construction Work Many business owners have struggled and tried to adjust in order to keep their businesses open. Back in May, Godoy’s Bakery posted on their

Facebook page new routes for their entrances just to get into their bakery. They’ve been having difficulty ever since the road work started and have seen sales drop because of it. The bakery has since tried to make adjustments. Cris Godoy explained “Our sales dropped, 60 to 80 percent.” He said that Godoy’s Bakery started taking their bread to sell at other places, wherever they could. “Port Isabel, Brownsville, San Benito, and that wasn’t enough so we started making flour tortillas... That was another thing that helped us remain here in Los Fresnos.” But Godoy said that it’s still not enough for them to remain in Los Fresnos. “It’s already to the point where we’re done, you know.. We’re out of money.” Godoy and his brother Sabino Godoy have been running their bakery for two years now and said that “It’s pretty hard for us... For us to remain here. We don’t have any days to rest.. Because we don’t have money to pay our employees.” Jerrod Leon Henry, the
self-proclaimed “Mexican Hillbilly,” is also the owner of Rio Grande Distillery. Like Godoy’s Bakery, Henry’s liquor store has been suffering from the road work being done on State Highway 100/Ocean Boulevard. He also has said that he will be relocating his Liquor store. When asked what the City of Los Fresnos has done to help these small businesses, Mark Milum, City Manager told Los Fresnos News “We’ve been trying to promote them, and trying to be sure that they have access in and out of their business.” and when asked how they’ve promoted these businesses Milum responded “Social media, And the Chamber has been doing a good job of that.”
Road Construction and Estimated Time-Frame Milum further explained the benefits and reasoning behind the construction work. He noted the sidewalks will be ADA compliant. “People can get around the way they need CULL Generic 5x2 eng_Layout 1 to get around.” Roads will also be a little wider in some places for better traffic flow.

CPRIT Awards $2.5 Million to UTRGV Additional stories and to Help Support Cancer Research
content on our website
By Maria Gonzalez UTRGV
RIO GRANDE VALLEY, TEXAS – AUG. 27, 2021 – UTRGV has received its first CPRIT grant – $2.5 million in funding for an Integrated Cancer Research Core facility that will serve as a foundation for building the Rio Grande Valley’s growing cancer research network. The core also will support the established South Texas Center of Excellence in Cancer Research to address disproportionate, cancerrelated health issues in the area. Dr. Michael B. Hocker, dean of the UTRGV School of Medicine, said the CPRIT grant is extremely competitive. “To have been its recipient solidifies UTRGV’s commitment to providing better healthcare options across the Rio Grande Valley,” he said. Dr. Subhash Chauhan, Ph.D., professor and chair of the Department of Immunology and Microbiology at the UTRGV School of
Medicine, is founding director of the South Texas Center of Excellence in Cancer Research. “We are thrilled and excited to receive this CPRIT funding for the first time, and it will allow us to bring UTRGV and the Valley to the forefront for our cancer research efforts,” Chauhan said. He said it will help support UTRGV’s developing role in fasttrack cancer research in the state and place UTRGV researchers at the forefront of significant contributions in new, collaborative research projects. “With the help of this funding, our cancer researchers will be able to conduct very sophisticated experiments and will be able to develop newer cancer prevention strategies,” Chauhan said. The grant will help fund two major pieces of high-tech, state-of-theart equipment critical in the university’s cancer research. “These new instruments will allow researchers to conduct
experiments related to cancer imaging in smallanimal flow cytometry analysis in a single cell, along with cellular imaging,” Chauhan said. The Integrated Cancer Research Core facility will serve as a critical location for researchers’ work with local cancer patient samples. Hocker said the grant will contribute to UTRGV’s promise to transform the medical landscape in the region. “This grant is going to help us reach those who seek essential cancer treatment without the need to travel out of the area,” he said. “It’s monumental.” Chauhan said
UTRGV’s research collaborators play a critical role in this grant project. “I am highly thankful to our whole cancer research team, especially Dr. Meena Jaggi and Dr. Murali M. Yallapu, who are key players in this grant,” he said. “Both of these individuals
will act as directors of the CPRIT-funded Integrated Cancer Research Core.” “As an emerging cancer research group, we came up with a theme that has potential to revolutionize the landscape of cancer research in the Valley,” Chauhan said.
UTRGV recently received a $2.5 million CPRIT grant for an Integrated Cancer Research Core facility that will serve as a foundation for building the region’s growing cancer research network. Overseeing the core will be faculty from the Department of Immunology and Microbiology at the UTRGV School of Medicine – Dr. Meena Jaggi, professor; Dr. Subhash Chauhan, professor and chair of the department; and Dr. Murali M. Yallapu, associate professor. (UTRGV Photo)

Community Groups to Receive More Than $1 Million for At-Risk Families
Community-Centric Services Support Children, Youth, And Families Before A Crisis More than 1,500 Texas families will have access to one-stop centers of community support during a multi-year program to prevent child abuse and neglect. The effort is being funded through grants from the Texas Department of Family and Protective Services (DFPS). Five Texas organizations with long-standing ties to their communities will offer the services through the creation of new, innovative Family Resource Centers (FRCs). Once established, each FRC will serve as a welcoming hub for families in need based on their community’s unique culture and interests. Families can walk in and find a range of services – from supportive parenting groups, to childhood development guidance classes, to help securing housing and employment, and more – all in one place. “This is an exciting opportunity to fund familyfocused centers of support based on local communities’ needs. Each FRC will be just as unique as the Texas
community it serves,” said Sasha Rasco, Chief Prevention and Community Wellbeing Officer for DFPS’s Prevention and Early Intervention Division (PEI). “By focusing on protective factors – teaching parents to be resilient, seek help in a crisis, connect with their community, learn positive parenting - FRCs help prevent abuse and neglect long before they become a problem.” The five FRC Grantees are: BCFS Health and Human Services in Cameron County. DePelchin Children’s Center in Harris County. El Paso Center for Children in El Paso County. Easter Seals Rio Grande Valley in Hidalgo County. The SAFE Alliance in Travis County. FRCs in other states have seen positive results with more families accessing services and more children kept safe from child maltreatment. Grantees in Texas will work with PEI for guidance and evaluation. The Texas Alliance for Child and Family Services
will provide technical support and staff training for the grantees. “The Alliance will partner with DFPS to support the FRCs and to develop practical services and supports for our Texas families,” said Katie Olse, the Alliance CEO. “These one-stop centers are a part of the future of serving families and our role is to help these organizations adhere to national standards while serving the unique needs of each community.” Funding for the FRCs comes from CommunityBased Child Abuse Prevention (CBCAP) dollars, and funds from the CBCAP American Rescue Plan Act. Grantees will receive $230,000 for Fiscal Year 2022, and $300,000 in Fiscal Years 2023, 2024 and 2025. Funding is expected to serve between 150-400 families annually. For more information about the Prevention and Early Intervention (PEI) Division and supported programs, please visit PEI's webpages on the DFPS website.
Ask Our Dentists by DR. ADAM LALONDE
Q: Right now, I feel terrible about myself because I hate my dentures. It seems like they were made for somebody else. Are all dentures alike? ANSWERED by DR.ADAM LALONDE: Everyone’s mouth feels dry from time to time, but if you have a dry mouth all or most of the time, it may indicate that you have a problem with saliva production called Xerostomia or dry mouth. Dry mouth means you don’t have enough saliva or spit to keep your mouth moist. Without adequate saliva to Dr. Adam Lalonde lubricate your mouth, wash away food, and neutralize the acids produced by plaque, extensive cavities can form, so dry mouth should not be ignored. Reduced saliva flow that results in a dry mouth is more common among older adults, and often a side effect of medications such as antihistamines, diuretics, pain killers and medicines for high blood pressure. It may also be caused by medical disorders like diabetes or cancer. Symptoms of dry mouth include a dry feeling in your mouth and throat, trouble swallowing, a burning sensation on your tongue, reduced ability to taste things, a metallic taste in your mouth, mouth sores, or frequent bad breath. If you suffer from dry mouth your dentist can recommend various methods to help restore moisture. Saliva substitutes or specially formulated mouthwashes are among the recommendations that he or she might make to bring you relief.
