I knew right then and there that this was my calling too.” However, Ortiz said she hasn’t given up on teaching just yet. “As a nurse, I get to care for others, lend a hand, but I also get to teach them about health and wellness,” she said. “It’s a perfect blend.” So, after numerous hours in the classroom and in clinical settings, Ortiz is on her way to working in the field of nursing, while pursuing her bachelor’s degree at a local university. “Because of the CNA program, I am so much more confident beginning my journey as a university student,” said Ortiz. “From classroom and lab to hospital settings, I was exposed to everything that comes with being

BROWNSVILLE, Texas (September 17, 2021) – Monika Ortiz took a leap in getting ahead in her career this year when, as a high school student, she decided to enroll in the Certified Nursing Assistant program at Texas Southmost College. And this summer, she earned her certificate, officially beginning her
nursing assistant career. “It’s such a great feeling knowing that I was able to prove to myself that I could do this,” said the 18-yearold. “And the fact that TSC gives us this type of opportunity, so young, means a lot. I’m really grateful that I got this chance.” The Los Fresnos High School graduate said she thought earning
this certification in high school would be a good start and would solidify her career decision. “This has just fueled my passion for nursing even more,” said Ortiz. “I know for sure that this is what I want do in life.” Growing up, Ortiz had her mind set on being a teacher, but as family members became ill, some even diagnosed with cancer, she got a
a nursing assistant and then some. It’s really difficult to explain how impactful it all was.” Ortiz’s dream is to become a nurse specializing in oncology or neurology, and she said TSC helped give her a brighter outlook. “TSC’s CNA program allowed me to grow up, change my mentality about what it really means to be a nurse and learn about personal responsibility,” she said. “There are lives in my hands as a nurse and connections to be made with patients, it’s a lot more than what someone sees on “Grey’s Anatomy,” and I’m in this for the long run. This is where I’m supposed to be.” Ortiz was one of four Los Fresnos High School graduates who received their certification as a nursing assistant from TSC this summer. After being honored for her achievement at a recent pinning ceremony hosted by TSC’s CNA program, she is officially welcomed into the profession and ready to take the journey toward becoming a registered nurse one step at a time.

Suicide Prevention Month Valley Baptist Health System Working to Educate Community on Warning Signs During National Suicide Prevention Month HARLINGEN & BROWNSVILLE – Because of the stigmas still associated with mental health, suicide remains a topic that can be difficult to discuss even today as September serves as National Suicide Prevention Month. Such discussions regarding mental health are critical when it comes to recognizing and understanding the warning signs that someone might be considering suicide, said Becky Tresnicky, MSW, LCSW, and Director of Behavioral Health Services and Performance Excellence at Valley BaptistBrownsville. “Suicide awareness is incredibly important because we can all prevent suicide,” she said. “Understanding the issues regarding suicide and mental health is an important step in helping ourselves, helping others, and positively reframing the conversation around
suicide.” According to the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, suicide is the 10th leading cause of death in the United States. In 2019 alone, 47,511 Americans died by suicide and there were an estimated 1.38 million suicide attempts. Such figures make efforts to raise awareness during National Suicide Prevention Month critical to keeping loved ones safe, said Tresnicky, especially as the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic continues to have far-lasting impacts on maintaining good mental health. Throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, studies have shown amplified risk factors associated with suicide, such as job or economic loss, trauma or abuse, mental health disorders, and barriers to accessing health care, she said. While there is no one set of signs that someone might be considering hurting themselves,
They will learn best practices from organizations inside and outside of education that have built highperforming talent management systems, then work to define what great leadership looks like in Los Fresnos CISD. District leaders will then use this definition to design systems and structures to sustain the district’s school leadership pipeline. For this inaugural group of districts, The Holdsworth Center will cover the costs of programming, thanks to the generosity of its founder and other
philanthropic supporters. Founded by H-E-B Chairman Charles Butt in 2017, the center’s mission is to improve the quality of public education by supporting and developing educational leaders. The Center’s other programs include the 5-year Holdsworth Partnership, which helps districts grow more outstanding leaders at all levels of the organization, and an 18-month Superintendent Leadership Program to support superintendents who are either new to the role or new to a large district. The 14 districts
participating in the Holdsworth Leadership Collaborative are Corpus Christi ISD and Mission and Los Fresnos CISDs in South Texas; Conroe, Tomball, Pasadena and La Porte ISDs in
Southeast Texas; Eanes, Temple, Waco and College Station ISDs and San Marcos CISD in Central Texas; and Irving and Plano ISDs in North Texas.
Tresnicky said that at-risk individuals often display certain characteristics or risk factors. “Some of the risk factors include, but are not limited to a current or historical mental health diagnosis, alcohol and/or substance use disorders, feelings of hopelessness, history of trauma or abuse, access to lethal means, lack of social support, stressful life events (such as divorce, bullying, financial crisis, or psychosocial loss), exposure to another person’s suicide, and perceived stigma associated with mental health crisis,” she said. Anthony Manuel, MSN, RN, and Director of Valley Baptist Medical CenterHarlingen’s Geriatric Behavioral Health Unit,
said that the community can play an important role in preventing suicide by simply being aware of those around us and caring for their wellbeing. “It is important to pay attention to what people say, how they act, and how they feel, especially now under the prolonged and extreme stress of the COVID-19 pandemic. A person considering suicide might talk about killing themselves, being a burden to others, or feeling hopeless,” he said. “Their behaviors might also signal a risk, especially if it is related to a painful event, loss, or change that results in suicide planning, isolation from family and friends, giving away prized possessions, new or increased aggression,
and fatigue. Warning signs in someone considering suicide may also include a person exhibiting depression, anxiety, shame, or a sudden onset of relief or improvement in mood.” Above all, Manuel said that those who are considering suicide should not be ashamed to seek help. “Whether you, or someone you know, might have mental health concerns or suicidal ideations, be open and don’t be afraid to speak to someone,” he said. “We all have mental health just as we have physical health, and help is available.” While the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic has temporarily paused physical support group
gatherings, Valley Baptist Health System’s Pastoral Services Department continues to offer support for those in need by providing information regarding available local resources. Ask Our Dentists by DR. ADAM LALONDE
Q: What are dental implants?
“Your Community Newspaper”
ANSWERED by DR.ADAM LALONDE:
A dental implant is an artificial tooth that is surgically anchored to your jaw to hold a replacement tooth or bridge in place. Implant material is made from different types of metallic and bone-like ceramic materials that are compatible with body tissue. Implants are a good solution to tooth loss because they look and feel like natural teeth. Dental implants don’t rely on neighboring teeth for support; they are permanent Dr. Adam Lalonde and stable. With traditional practices, two teeth adjacent to a missing tooth must be ground down to anchor a bridge. Dental Implants often eliminate the need to modify healthy teeth. They can also solve many of the problems associated with removable dentures and help a person gain self confidence by knowing that they are fixed in place, and more closely resemble real teeth. Dental implants help to eliminate the gag reflex (a choking feeling associated with some dentures). They make food taste better and speech articulation easier. Implants result in less tissue irritation within the mouth. If you are considering implants, a thorough evaluation by your dentist will help determine if you would be a good candidate. If you do not have a dentist, you may call my office to schedule a complimentary 15 minute dental implant consultation.

the institute will offer spaces for educational and research advancements that will directly benefit the Valley. “The Institute of Neuroscience is a prime example of our School of Medicine’s goal of offering our community the best resources to healthcare possible,” he said. “With more than 32,000 square feet, our institute will be a space where students, faculty and staff will be able to collaborate and work on new ideas for brain health and neurological care. It will allow us to offer Valley residents answers to and resources for their most pressing healthcare issues.” ION also will provide educational opportunities in neuroscience, as well as cutting-edge research, all based in the region with providers committed to and passionate about the work they are doing, he
said. Salloum, president of the International College of PersonCentered Medicine, an international, professional organization that upholds humanism and science as the basis of care, said he hopes ION ultimately will help his team put patients first. “Our priority will be serving the needs of the Valley community. We call this person-centered medicine, which enhances the positive aspects of health and well-being, like prevention, recovery and health restoration,” Salloum said. “The core principles of personcentered medicine underscore the highest ethical commitment and cultural sensitivity of care and provide the best science-based individualized care by considering the uniqueness of each person.”
Dr. Ihsan M. Salloum, chair of the UTRGV School of Medicine’s Department of Neuroscience and director of the university’s Institute of Neuroscience in Harlingen, will guide the multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary research, education, clinical care and community partnership facility with a central goal: to advance brain health in the Rio Grande Valley and beyond. DATA SHOWS ALMOST HALF OF ALL CHILD CAR SEATS ARE MISUSED
RIO GRANDE VALLEY – A high-speed vehicle crash and a misused child car seat can lead to an unthinkable disaster, which is why TxDOT is encouraging parents to schedule a free car seat safety check during its annual “Save Me With a Seat” campaign. Vehicle crashes are a leading cause of death among children in the nation, and according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), 46% of all child car seats are misused. To encourage parents to schedule a free car seat safety check, the “Save Me With a Seat” campaign is traveling the state to help Texans
keep their children safe on the road. “Save Me With a Seat” will coincide with National Child Passenger Safety week which is taking place Sept. 19 – Sept. 25, 2021. “When child car seats are used correctly, they can help reduce injuries and prevent fatalities when among children are involved in during a crash,” said TxDOT Executive Director Marc Williams. “We urge parents to schedule a car seat check today to ensure they are safely and correctly using the right car seat for their child.” The “Save Me With a Seat” campaign will be highly visible during the
month of September as a branded digital billboard truck travels across the state to make stops in 11 Texas communities. The digital truck will set-up at community events and other high-traffic locations to display messaging from the “Save Me With a Seat” campaign on lighted LED screens. The digital truck will also display video content that educates parents and caregivers on car seat safety. The public outreach campaign will be supported by TV and radio ads, billboards, digital media and social media. TxDOT offers free car seat safety checks yearround. Parents and caregiv-
ers can visit SaveMeWithASeat.org and enter their zip code to find the nearest TxDOT Traffic Safety Specialist in their area to set up an appointment or view child car seat safety tips. As an incentive for parents who visit the website, TxDOT is hosting a free giveaway for a child car seat or booster seat. To enter, the public is invited to visit SaveMeWithASeat. org to fill out the giveaway form. The entry period for the giveaway will run from Sept. 1 – Sept. 29, 2021 with a winner announced on Sept. 30. In 2020, 78 children younger than 8 years old died in traffic crashes in
Texas, and 31 of those were unrestrained at the time of the crash. Among children ages 8-12 in 2020, 40 died in traffic crashes, with 16 of them unrestrained at the time of the crash. According to NHTSA, child car seats in passenger vehicles can reduce the risk of fatal injury in a crash by 71% for infants and by 54% for toddlers. TxDOT reminds drivers that Texas law requires all children under 8 — unless they are taller than 4 feet, 9 inches — to be in a car seat whenever they ride in a passenger vehicle. Failure to properly restrain a child can result in a ticket of up to $250. Children
under age 13 should ride in the back seat, properly secured in a seat belt or safety seat. “Save Me With a Seat” is a key component of #EndTheStreakTX, a broader social media and word-of-mouth effort that encourages drivers to make safer choices while behind the wheel, like wearing a seat belt, driving the speed limit, never texting and driving and never driving under the influence of alcohol or other drugs. Nov. 7, 2000 was the last deathless day on Texas roadways. #EndTheStreakTX asks all Texans to commit to driving safely to help end the streak of daily deaths
