Because Your Health Matters Role Models are found all around the community of Los Fresnos
Meet 16 year old Gabriel Cruces. He’s a junior at Los Fresnos High School and plays Football for the Los Fresnos Falcons. Gabriel plays defense and has the typical athletic build for a defensive football player. Gabriel’s workout regimen is an intense 1-2 hour workout in the morning and another 1-2 hours in the evening, five days a week. Gabriel hasn’t always been in the shape and condition he is now. He began working out two years ago at the age of 14 when his older brother Abel decided he wanted to lose weight. Abel, then 18, invited his younger brother Gabriel to join him in his fitness journey. Abel took charge of the workout plan and Gabriel followed along. Gabriel said, “The workouts were very tough and always changing. We did a combination of strength training and conditioning.” As a result of their hard work Gabriel lost twenty pounds and Abel lost ninety! Gabriel said, “We lost weight, but more importantly we gained strength, energy and improved our relationship as brothers. Two years later we still look forward to training together daily and meeting new goals.” Gabriel and Abel’s workouts are done at home or at the Los Fresnos Memorial Park. Gabriel said, “I find it very motivating to see people of all ages, shapes and sizes at the park working hard and taking care of themselves.” I asked Gabriel if you could offer a piece of advice to motivate others to begin taking better care of themselves, what would it be? He said, “Stand up and fight for what you really want in life, don’t worry about what other’s think, work hard and it will pay off in the end and most importantly believe in yourself and your dreams.” Together these two young brothers lost over 100 pounds because of a young man’s desire to become healthier. Congratulations Gabriel and Abel Cruces on a job very well done and thank you for sharing your story with the community of Los Fresnos. Hunting, Fishing Licenses On Sale AUSTIN — New licenses for the 2014-15 hunting and fishing seasons go on sale Friday, August 15. The current year Texas hunting and fishing licenses (except year-to-date fishing licenses) will expire Aug. 31. Every year, the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department issues about 2.5 million hunting and fishing licenses through the agency’s 28 field offices, more than 50 state parks and at over 1,700 retailers across the state. Licenses may also be purchased online through the TPWD website at www.tpwd.state.tx.us/buy or by phone at 1-800895-4248. Call center hours are Monday through Friday, 8 p.m. to 5 p.m. and there is a required $5 convenience fee for each phone or online transaction. The online transaction system is available 24/7. For online and phone orders, a physical license will be mailed within three business days. During that time period, a transaction receipt will be provided via email that will be sufficient proof of hunting license that can be used for dove hunting, though it will not be allowed for the take of fish or wildlife that require a tag. Hunting and fishing regulations for the new season can be found in the 2014-2015 Outdoor Annual, available at license retailers August 15 and online at www.txoutdoorannual.com. Starting this fall, hunters and anglers can take the Outdoor Annual with them in the field or on the water via a new app available by the end of August for free download on iPhone and Android platforms. Mandatory Hunter Education Certification In addition to a hunting license, anyone born after Sept. 1, 1971, must successfully complete a hunter education training course or purchase a one-time deferral good for one license year in order to hunt legally in Texas. The certification is valid for life and is honored in all other states and provinces. Hunters who need hunter education certification now have expanded contemporary options including a streamlined, one-day basic course and an option for anyone 17 years of age or older to take the hunting safety training completely online. A combination online home study and 4 to 5 hour skills field day course is also offered. More information on hunter education certification is available online at www.tpwd.state.tx.us/outdoor-learning/hunter-education . Bird Hunting Requirements A Migratory Game Bird endorsement and Harvest Information Program (HIP) certification are also required to hunt dove or teal in September. HIP certification involves a brief survey of previous year’s migratory bird hunting success and is conducted at the time licenses are purchased. Duck hunters also need to purchase a Federal Duck Stamp. There are other mandatory endorsements to consider at the time of license purchase. An Upland Game Bird Stamp ($7) is required to hunt all non-migratory game birds, including turkey, quail, pheasant and chachalaca. Lifetime License Drawing Hunters and anglers can also take care of their licensing requirements for life with the purchase of an $1,800 Lifetime Super Combo, or enter for a chance at winning a lifetime license through the Lifetime License Drawing. Entries for the drawing cost $5 each and may be purchased wherever licenses are sold. There is no limit on the number of entries that may be purchased. Winners will be drawn on Dec. 30, 2014 and June 30, 2015. If you enter by Dec. 27, 2014, you will be eligible for both drawings.

Ask Our Dentists Q: Why is it important to replace my missing teeth?
ANSWERED by DR. Eric valle:
2014 Property Tax Rates in City of Los Fresnos
If you have experienced tooth loss it is important to seek appropriate restorative treatment as soon as possible. Tooth loss can have a dramatic impact on your oral and overall health, and can lead to a range of serious complications including: • Existing teeth can migrate from position to fill the void left by tooth loss • Your gum tissue and jaw bone can begin to deteriorate • Your facial appearance can change in response to this jaw bone deterioration • Your bite can become misaligned which can lead to neuromuscular dental issues We strive to evaluate each patient and provide them with options for replacing missing teeth. If a tooth is missing, you should not wait to replace it because it may cost 2-3 times more to fix the situation. An implant is the best choice, next would be a bridge. See your dentist soon. It is very important and can lead to bigger problems. Contact your dentist to schedule an exam, and discuss your options for tooth replacement. There should be a number of options available to you, including dental implants.

Compost for your Garden
I
n our last article we talked about the importance of adding compost to the soil in your garden. Now we’ll discuss what is needed to make compost. There are four ingredients: water, air, and two different kinds of compostable materials called greens and browns. Let’s look at each one of these in detail. Greens are also referred to as nitrogen because that is the main nutrient they contain. Some compostable materials that are considered “greens” are new grass clippings, fruits, vegetables, kitchen scraps (banana peels, potato peels, eggshells, coffee grounds, tea leaves), and manure from chickens, turkeys, cows, horses, and goats. Although you can add meat, fish, and dairy products, it’s often advised not to because they will attract pests such as possums, raccoons, rats, and mice. Browns are also referred to as carbon because that is the main nutrient they contain. “Brown” compostable materials consist of things like dead Leaves, straw, hay, woodchips, sawdust, shredded newspaper, and feathers. If using sawdust, use a very small amount since its carbon content is very high. There are also some things that you should not put in your compost. Do not add dog or cat waste, oil, grease, fat, wood ash, charcoal, invasive plants, diseased plants, and weed seeds. Water is also essential for compost but not too much nor too little. To see if your compost has the right amount of water squeeze a hand full of the compost; it should feel moist, but water should not drip out of it. Compost also needs air. If the compost is too compact it will not decompose properly. Most of the air your compost gets will be though turning the compost pile. Those are the four ingredients you need to make compost - greens, browns, water, and air. In the next article we’ll talk about different types of compost bins. HARLINGEN – “Navigational Bronchoscopy” procedures which are now being performed in Cameron County are helping to diagnose lung cancer in Valley patients at an earlier stage, when treatment is more effective. Dr. Ricardo Martin Schwarcz, Pulmonologist, who performed Cameron County’s first navigational bronchoscopies in the Endoscopy Lab at Valley Baptist Medical Center in Harlingen, said the procedure could potentially save the lives of cancer patients in the Valley. “The new procedure allows for early detection of lung cancer, which can lead to curative treatments, and this is very exciting” Dr. Schwarcz added. “And it is a less-invasive procedure, which means fewer complications for the patient. This is state-of-the-art technology.” The new technology helps physicians to detect small cancer lesions. When it comes to lung cancer, physicians say the smaller the lesion, the better the prognosis. The navigational bronchoscopy procedure helps doctors to “mark the site,” for potential followup treatment to remove the tumor. During bronchoscopy procedures, doctors use a thin tube with a light to look inside the lungs. With the tube and other instruments, the pulmonologist can retrieve small samples, which pathologists at Valley Baptist use to determine whether or not the patient has cancer. The new “SuperDimension” technology at Valley Baptist works like a GPS road-mapping system inside the lungs, helping physicians to move their instruments deeper within the lungs and to retrieve samples more easily, from places that previously were hard to reach. In addition to Dr. Schwarcz, other pulmonologists who perform navigational bronchoscopy procedures at Valley Baptist include Dr. Jairo Rodriguez, Dr. Indal Seudeal, and Dr. Stanley Sy. For more information on lung cancer and other types of cancer, consult your doctor and visit www. ValleyBaptist.net.

John Ftacek in the Fast Lane
‘A great car and a great hobby’ La Feria State Farm agent John Ftacek and his 1962 Corvette came home from a NCRS National meet last month with his pristine condition car judged the “best of its class.” The annual gathering of Corvette aficionados from all over the country and the world met in Overland Park, Kansas. “It doesn’t get any better than this,” he said. “It was a dream come true, and I’m still trying to get back to reality.!” Ftacek told LA FERIA NEWS that he has been a “car guy” since his high school days when he purchased his first car, which was a 1955 Ford. “I paid $75.00 for it,” then added, “I purchased my first ever Corvette, a classic 1956 model, when I was on leave from the Air Force in 1968. “Since I did not want to drive it to the Upper Peninsula of Michigan in the snow, I left it at home for my 16-yearold brother to drive. The next year, I received orders for Viet Nam. I came home for 30 days leave before going overseas. During that month I can promise you that I drove the tires off that car, and then sold it before leaving. “When I returned from my overseas vacation and started college, I found another good, used 1962 Corvette.” he said. “About the same time, I also found a fellow student, who was to become my future wife. Her name was Judy. She was also attending Illinois State Univer-
sity. Well, I tried to combine my two loves. I tried to teach her how to drive and love a 4-speed Corvette, but that did not happen.” “In time, Judy and I decided to get married and start a family, so the Corvette had to go,” he explained. Whereupon, John promised himself, “Someday’ I will have my old 1962 Corvette again.” So, from that day on, he said he started saving for his next Corvette, while, at the same time, he was putting all three of his kids through college. ”First things first,” he continued. Now, let’s fast forward the story: Four years ago, Ftacek came across his heart’s desire--a 1962 Corvette on Ebay listed as a one-owner car. “I quickly got in touch with the seller and made an offer he couldn’t refuse,” he said. “The car had been stored under a tarp in a garage in the State of Washington for over 20 years. I couldn’t believe it. When I got it running again, I began to recognize a lot of original parts on the car. Those important details are what qualify a Corvette for national competition.” He next took the car to the National Corvette Restorers Society (NCRS) for evaluation. They found it to be very original and “signed off” on the car to be taken to the NCRS National meet in Overland Park, Kansas. That was four weeks ago. “I didn’t want to go alone,” he said, “so, I called one of my

He said, “let’s go,” and off we went to the national meet in Kansas.” Ftacek explained that he was trying to attain what is called the NCRS Chevrolet Bowtie Award. What that means is, that the car must be 80-85% original for Interior, Exterior, Chassis, and Mechanical--just as it had left the assembly plant in St Louis, Missouri. “My car was VIN#00029, which meant it
was the 29th Corvette built for the model year 1962. “The judges scored my car with an average of 90% original in each category,” he said with a big smile. “Therefore, my little, newly-acquired 1962 Corvette was qualified as a Four Star Bowtie car-There is no higher honor or award--It doesn’t get any better.” The judges told Ftacek that his car is the oldest Corvette in the USA Registry and they will be using some photos of parts of the car for the
next revision of the Judging Manual. An understandably excited John Ftacek said, “Can you believe it, my car can and will be used as the judging standard to judge all other 62’s against at future Corvette National meets.” He added: “I have called the original owner from time to time and to let him know about the car, and to see if he has any old photos or paperwork. This car was truly a ‘garage/barn’ find!” Now that you and your
award-winning car have made a clean sweep of the 62’ Corvette model awards, will you be attending future meets? “Are you kidding? We’re already making plans for next year,” he affirmed, adding, “The Corvette is a great car and a great hobby,” Thus, bringing to a close our enjoyable visit with a true “car guy.” John Ftacek welcomes calls from Corvette lovers who want talk Corvette or just swap car tales.
