Because Your Health Matters 21 Day Challenge Challenge encouraged by Fitness Instructor Connie Salazar We all know basic nutrition. We know what we should eat, what we should avoid. We also know what we decide to indulge in even though it’s bad for us. Why, because we are human! I think what we have to work on here is establishing discipline. Forming healthier habits, making better long term choices that will help us live healthier lives. Research has shown that it takes 21 days to break or form a habit. How interesting. I think it is time to put it to the test!!!

Step one, Self-Evaluation. Weigh, Measure and Take a Picture of yourself. (Optional) Make a list of the foods you consume that you know are bad for you. (Be Honest!) It can be from 5 to 10 things. Then find a healthier substitution for that item. Don’t stress or dwell on what you are giving up but focus your attention on what you are going to replace it with. Example Unhealthy Food (Naughty List) Substitution Sodas and Sugared Drinks Water with lemon or fruit infused water Flour Tortillas Serving Size of Multigrain Sandwich Thins Candy Bars Fruit (low in sugar) Chips Dried Fruit, carrots, celery sticks Red Meat Chicken Breast, Ground Turkey Remember, this is just an example‌you make your own list. Only you can determine which foods you are overindulging in and then substitute for a healthier option. Step two, Mark your Calendar! Give yourself 21 Days. You are making your own rules and guide lines, so follow them! For 21 Days you are to avoid all the foods from your naughty list and replace them with the foods on your substitution list. Remember to eat 5 times a day, 3 meals and 2 snacks. Mind your portions and start establishing those healthier habits. Step three, don’t forget your Fitness! 30 minutes of Cardio activity minimum daily! Take a walk, go for a run, dance your heart out but MOVE! In 21 Days you will see a change by simply following your own rules, invite other’s to join the challenge with you! Reminder Free fitness classes are offered 5 days a week at the Los Fresnos Memorial Park! “Your On site Answer to Document Destruction”
I am this sweet and loving neutered boy of about a year and a half old. I lost my right eye when I was a little baby, I got a bad infection and when I was rescued and taken to the vet, it was too late to save my eye, however I can see well with the other one and having just one eye does not stop me from being a loving guy who gets along well with everybody. I am a Flaming Point Siamese mix kitty and I am in search of a home where I can find the love and attention I deserve. Please consider adopting me and you will find out how sweet I am. I am already neutered and current with vaccinations.

Mae is a very sweet girl with lots of energy. She is great in the house, but she doesn’t like to be bored. She needs a family that will keep her busy and exercised. She is good with cats and most other dogs. She loves kids. She would make a great jogging companion. I am already spayed, housetrained, good with kids, good with dogs, and good with cats.

Be Safe. Drive Smart. TxDOT Back to School Driving Tips
“Dessert With The Doctor” draws good crowd interested in learing more about the effects of stroke. (Photos courtesy of the Los Fresnos Chamber of Commerce)
Desserting with the Doctor
The end of summer means millions of Texas children will soon return to school. TxDOT reminds drivers to be extra cautious as school zones become more active. Last year, 625 vehicle crashes occurred in school zones in Texas, resulting in two deaths and 112 serious injuries. August and September of 2013 alone saw 104 crashes in school zones. The most common factors contributing to these crashes were driver inattention, failure to control speed and failure to yield the right-of-way at stop signs. Following these simple tips can help Texas children reach school safely and help drivers avoid costly fines and tickets.
Tips for Driving in School Zones Put away your cell phone. Cell phone use is banned in active school zones, and violators face fines of up to $200 in school zones where signs are posted. Always obey school zone speed limit signs. Remember, traffic fines usually double in school zones. Drop off and pick up your children in your school’s designated areas, not the middle of the street. Keep an eye on children gathered at bus stops. Be alert for children who might dart
across the street or between vehicles on their way to school.
Tips for Children Walking or Biking to School Always cross at intersections and designated crosswalks. Look left, right and then left again before proceeding. Look for traffic when stepping off a bus or from behind parked cars. Make eye contact with drivers before crossing the street. Always obey crossing guards. Always wear a helmet when riding a bicycle.
Tips for Sharing the Road with School Buses
Always stop for flashing red lights on a school bus, regardless of which direction you’re headed. If you are on the other side of a divided highway, you do not have to stop for a bus with flashing red lights, but please still use caution as children are around. School buses stop at all railroad crossings, so be prepared to stop if you are behind a bus. Watch for children who might run across the street as they get on or off the bus.

Felipe Peña, Executive Director. “All funds collected from sponsorship, donations, ticket sales and auction return to the Children’s Museum for all the activity that take place over the course of the year including special programs, workshops and new and enhanced exhibits. “ Currently serving the Rio Grande Valley and located inside Dean Porter Park, the Children’s Museum attracts over 40,000 visitors a year with all families enjoying their visits. Here is what one family had to say: Mr. Davis writes: “Great place for kids to spend time and beat the heat. The summer camps they put on are fantastic as well. My 6 year old loves it!” “This is the kind of feedback that lets us know that our Museum truly enhances quality of life for our patrons.” said Mr. Peña. “Our hope is that we can continue to reach families and showcase our Museum while supporting learning for the entire Rio Grande Valley.” To donate auction items or for sponsorship and monetary donations, please contact Rachel O’Sullivan or Felipe Peña at 956-548-9300.

August is National Immunization Month (StatePoint)August, which is National Immunization Month, is a great reminder to keep your family up-to-date on important vaccines. With the kids headed back to school and the upcoming flu season ahead, everyone, young and old, should brush up on the facts about vaccines, say experts. For example, did you know that most healthy adults are advised to get vaccines to protect their health? Anyone can become ill from infectious disease if he or she isn’t properly immunized. Most adults should get an annual influenza vaccine, as well as a Tdap booster shot every ten years, say doctors. Children heading to crowded classrooms are especially at risk for spreading or acquiring illnesses. Parents should check with their pediatricians before the school year about what immunizations their children need to stay healthy for the year ahead. From measles, mumps and rubella to polio, booster shots are crucial life-saving medical care for children. To learn more about immunization, visit www.cdc.gov/ vaccines/. There’s no doubt about it, vaccines save lives. This August, get the facts you need to stay healthy.

Oldest Alamo building getting new roof Ask Our Dentists Historic Long Barrack museum to close Aug. 18 through mid-October THE ALAMO, Texas – A roof replacement project at the oldest building at The Alamo will begin soon. The Long Barrack, located just northwest of the Alamo sanctuary and the only building on the complex which hosts a museum, will be closed starting Monday, Aug. 18. Work is expected to continue through midOctober. Construction will not affect any other buildings or the complex. The Alamo church, the Shrine of Texas Liberty, will continue to be open year-round. “This project is part of our ongoing effort to maintain these hallowed grounds out of respect for those who made history here,” said Texas Land Commissioner Jerry Patterson, who oversees the Alamo. The current exhibit in the Long Barrack, “The Alamo: A Story Bigger Than Texas,” will resume once the Long Barrack reopens to the public. A few of the items will go on temporary display in the Shrine but the majority will be in secure storage until the roof replacement project is complete. A fence and scaffolding will surround the Long Barrack through the duration of the re-roofing project. Over the years, moisture has slowly collected underneath the Long Barrack roof which, if left unaddressed, could jeopardize its structural integrity. The new roof will make for a safer environment for artifacts and will preserve the building for

Unfortunately, many factors are at work to destroy the naturally white smile we were born with. The most common include aging, consumption of staining substances (coffee, tea, cola, and tobacco), trauma, nerve degeneration, and old restorations. Certain medications may also cause tooth discoloration. Hot coffee & tea are especially hazardous to your smile because the increased temperature change of your teeth (hot and cold cycling) causes teeth to expand & contract. This cycling allows stains to penetrate tooth enamel. Cutting down on tea & coffee, accompanied by regular brushing and flossing, & professional cleanings at your dentist’s office, can go a long way to reducing these stains. If you decide you would like to go beyond this to make your smile look brighter you should investigate other options like professional tooth whitening or bonding. Almost anyone can benefit from either of these procedures, and your dentist can easily determine if you are a viable candidate during your regular exam. If you are a candidate for whitening, your dentist may suggest a procedure that can be done in- office or dispense a professional at-home product for you to use. The advantage of the in-office procedure, called Zoom Power Whitening is that amazing tooth whitening can be achieved in as little time as one hour.
