City Takes Actions to Continue Progress Development for McDonald’s and Walmart by MBWright, LFN Editor

Cool Down With Peanut Butter Pie

Continuing their efforts to clear the way for the new McDonald’s Restaurant in Los Fresnos, Commissioners accepted the low bid of $29,905 made by Cornett Construction Co. of San Benito to finish up utility line relocations neces-

sary before construction of the new facility during their regular meeting held Tuesday, July 9. The new eatery will be located between the new Stripes and Dairy Queen on Highway 100. “This company has done excellent work for the city and has been in-

volved in several projects recently including the Arroyo Boulevard water and sewer line relocation,” commented City Manager Mark Milum. In other action, the city commission approved the first reading of Ordinance 442 that will require a mineral owner to obtain

a permit for operation of an oil, gas, or combined well within the city limits of Los Fresnos. On the request made by Walmart, Milum said, “They asked us to do this as a safety measure so if someone held mineral rights under their construction site. This

will take care of a need Walmart has, although we have no gas in this area”. Walmart will begin construction soon on a retail outlet to be located behind the First Community Bank of Los Fresnos.

Commissioner Javier Mendez announced the 1st Annual City of Los Fresnos’s Boots on the Ground endurance 5k and 10k mud run to be held November 2, 2013. The Veterans Memorial run will be held at the Los Fresnos Rodeo grounds and proceeds will go towards building a Veteran’s Memorial in Los Fresnos. The city is currently seeking sponsors for the event. For more information visit, www. bootsongroundrgv.com. Mayor Polo Narvaez brought up the topic of water conservation and exploring other sources of drinking water. Milum explained that water from the Rio Grande is purchased and stored in a reservoir that holds a 45-60 day supply of water for the treatment plant. He said the council might want to explore expanding the holding tank and even the process of water reclamation. “The city discharges treated wastewater into a drainage ditch that empties

We could buy 50% less water if we reclaimed this treated discharge,” commented Milum. Water reclamation is gaining in popularity; the specially treated wastewater is most often used to supply water for industrial uses and watering landscapes, like golf courses. Studies show water-reclamation technology has improved greatly and will be a vital part of providing drinking water for parts of the country struggling to keep reservoirs full. The water-reclamation process involves a complex series of treatment. The water is disinfected, de-mineralized, disinfected again and mixed with water from the

Dear Ms. Etiquette, It seems that a lot of my family are having babies and I would like to give them showers to help them out. I am confused as to how to word and address the invitations. For instance, if it is a couple’s shower, should it be addressed to Jane & John Doe, or Mr. & Mrs. John Doe? Is it proper to put where the mother-to-be is registered on the invitation? I’m stumped. Dear Stumped, You are right, many women are pregnant right now and most of them are having boys! Having showers is certainly a good way to help out a friend or family member. However, an immediate family member should not give the shower, instead it should be a friend, aunt, cousin, sister-in-law or a distant relative. The reason for this as well as for any other giftgiving event is you do not want to send an invitation that obligates the recipient to provide a gift to a direct relative. Baby showers are usually given before the baby is born but some future moms with difficult pregnancies may want to wait until after the baby is born just in case there is a chance that something might go

wrong. So follow the momto-be’s feelings. The point of having baby showers is to shower the mom-to-be with gifts for her first baby so she will know what she needs to purchase or borrow, but opening baby gifts is so much fun it can be done anytime. Usually it is not appropriate to give showers to second or third siblings since they usually have hand-me-downs. but if it has been several years since the last baby was born, it’s okay. Invitees should be very close friends and family members or people who were not invited to the shower for the first baby. As far as how to word an invitation, you can make it cute, let your imagination run wild so long as the mother’s name, the date and time of the shower, a request for a response to an R.S.V.P. is mentioned. You should not include a list of things the future mom might need, rather you could include an enclosure card from where they have registered. Address the cards as Mr. & Mrs. John Doe if it is a couples shower. You would word it Mrs. Jane Doe if it was women only. Happy Planning! Our “Dig into Reading” summer program was a huge success. During the program, a total of 790 books were read. We are proud to say that the children did an awesome job! Reading is crucial especially during the summer months when students are not attending classes; we thank the parents of these children for supporting and encouraging them to read during our summer reading program. Our program ended with a picnic and a movie. Each child also received a Super Summer Reader Certificate, a prize, a backpack and a free book. While our program was incredibly successful, we could not have done it by ourselves. We want to thank H- E- B, Whataburger, Rodeo Dental, Palo Alto Battlefield National Historical Park, Brownsville Animal Defense, Los Fresnos Fire Department, Laguna Atascosa National Wildlife Refuge, and our fantastic volunteers Johanna, Ivette, and Peggy for their support.

Q: What factors increase your risk for dental decay?

ANSWERED by DR. GRAYSON SELLERS Before answering your question, I like to remind all my patients that you don’t have to be a kid to get cavities. In fact, the average adult develops about 1 cavity per year. Factors that increase your risk for dental decay are: 1-Dietary: Better eating habits means better checkups. Avoid frequent snacks & sweetened drinks that expose teeth to damaging acids produced by oral bacteria. Note: sugars & starches are most harmful. Popular choices that contain sugar include: specialty coffees, sodas and juices, & breath mints. Beware of “hidden” sugars and starches found in many “health” items such as Calcium Supplements & Vitamin C Chewables, Antacids, Cough Remedies, Protein Bars/Drinks, Weight Loss Bars/Drinks, & Canned Nutritional Supplements. 2-Tobacco Use: Using tobacco products, especially sweet chewing tobacco, challenges your immune system & increases oral problems. Also, tobacco products can damage gums & teeth & lead to gum recession. Another significant effect of tobacco products is that it may lead to oral cancer. 3-Dental Factors: Your past or current dental conditions can mean a greater risk for cavities. Here are some examples: Gum Recession, Orthodontic Appliance, Dry Mouth, (Saliva is essential for cleansing the teeth & neutralizing acids produced by oral bacteria) Oral Hygiene, & Acidic Mouth (frequent vomiting). 4-Medical Factors: Certain medications & conditions can increase your risk of tooth decay. Prescription & over-the-counter meds that lead to dry mouth include those used to treat: High blood pressure, Allergies, Depression/Anxiety, Cancer, & Digestive disorders. Patients of all ages benefit from fluoride treatments. Adults are especially prone to rapidly developing root cavities. Professionally applied fluoride treatments are recommended for both adults & children & can reduce cavities by 30%. Even as an adult, there are some things you never outgrow….like cavities.

reservoir and then re-treated again. Milum also announced that results from the Uniform Crime Reporting UCR program is to produce reliable crime statistics for law enforcement administration, operation, and management. The City of Los Fresnos’ statistics were very favorable in the latest report and will be the topic of a report in the Brownsville Herald. In 2012, there were 171 felony offenses reported with 47 of those cases solved and 25 arrests made. These statistics are much lower than other Cameron County cities.
