W

ay back in 1919, did Jim Irwin Sr. have any idea what he was starting? When Jim arrived by train to the Weirs Beach area in around 1914, his focus and passion was music.

Trumpet playing to be exact.

Why did a musician who grew up in South Boston end up in the Lakes Region of New Hampshire? In those days, travel was slower and the Lakes Region wasn’t the tourist Mecca it is today.

While vacationers rented rooms and stayed at hotels and inns in the area, fewer people had boats or would have known what to do with one if they had a sailboat or other boat.

Jim Irwin came to the area to play music, it was as simple as that. He knew the meaning of hard work and had an eyes-onthe-prize focus. He had been working since he was a kid in the State Street financial district of Boston as an errand boy, running orders and taking messages from office to office. He saved enough for trumpet lessons and persevered. Eventually, he had the musical skills to form a band and began to play for parties and weddings. The band’s popularity grew in Boston and soon they were traveling outside the area, and found themselves north bound to Lake Winnipesaukee. Jim Irwin played on hot summer nights on the shores of the lake and people loved the sounds he created with his trumpet.

Just because Jim had gained popularity as a musician, it didn’t mean things were easy street. He was around age 25 and World War I was looming. He enlisted in the Navy, and of course, he brought his famed horn with him and low and behold, he formed a band while serving his country. His popularity grew after the war and the band played all over the East coast. But still Jim was drawn to the Lake Winnipesaukee/Weirs area each summer. It was an omen of what was to come: he did not forget the lake and

Jim was what we would today call an entrepreneur.

Back then he might not have put such a fancy name to his strong-work-ethic personality and big ideas. It takes someone like that to succeed, and Jim was certainly a visionary.

He saw the chance to expand in 1921 and he bought an old music hall at the Weirs. It took courage to take such a financial risk, but Jim never let a little fear stop him.

Jim’s ability to try new things led him to promote the Weirs area, and he brought musical and other types of acts to perform during the summer. (One such act, the Wizard of the North, was handcuffed to a bicycle on steep Tower Hill and rode a steel wire into the lake, according to information on the www.irwinmarine.com website.)

Jim saw the many opportunities the Lakes Region could offer to vacationers and he wanted to bring it all to the Weirs and surrounding area. balmy summer nights. There were moonlight boat rides. To this day, older people speak fondly of meeting their future spouse at an Irwin’s Winnipesaukee Gardens dance or taking a ride in one of Jim’s Miss Winnipesaukee boats. It was pure magic for residents of the Lakes Region and for vacationers.

Back in 1919, Jim started a motor boat business and he had 55 inboard motorboats of around 20 ft. each. The motorboats were one cylinder with 5 hp motors. The boats were rented for $8.00 per week in those days. Irwin’s had a fleet of row boats and a showroom offering marine fittings and motors. Irwins also started building and selling a standardized Winnipesaukee Runabout that was 24 ft. long.

In around 1945, after World War II, Irwin Marine was built on Union Avenue in Laconia. It was a large operation from the beginning, with a boat plant covering two acres under one roof and about 40 big boat wells, according to an article titled “New Hampshire Boat Company Celebrates 45th Anniversary”.

Jim Irwin Jr. had been around boats all his life and it was natural that he work alongside his father in the boat business.

When Jack Irwin got out of high school, he attended Boston College but soon the Korean War loomed. Jack and some college buddies enlisted in the Marine Corps. When he got out in the 1960s, Jack returned to the Lakes Region where his father was, of course, running the thriving boat business. It was natural for the Irwin kids, now grown up, to work with their Dad as they had always done. When most people were winding down and contemplating retirement, Jim Irwin Sr. was working in the thriving boat business.

He told his sons that he knew there was a fortune to be made in boating. He wanted to go into boating with his sons but he

warned that they would have to be willing to take on a lot of the work. Of course, they were willing and today, the Irwin name in boating, storage and cars is among the most recognizable in the area.

It would be interesting, from the perspective of our modernday world, to sit down and chat with Jim Irwin Sr. Unfortunately, Jim passed away isome years ago, but he left a family and a legacy; his story and his work and impact on the Lakes Region live’s on.

The closest we can come to speaking with Jim Irwin Sr. is to chat with his son, Jack, who has been working in the family businesses since he was a kid. Jack and his family built Irwin Marine into a multi-store operation with locations in Lakeport, Alton, Alton Bay and Hudson, NH, with lots of winter boat storage.

Jack speaks fondly of his father when recounting the Irwin story. Jack learned his strong work ethic from his father, helping out in the business from a young age. If you are an Irwin, it seems, you cannot be afraid to get your hands dirty with axle grease, your feet wet when towing boats and your outlook expanded to do whatever is necessary to get the job done.

“We lived in Laconia when I was a kid,” Jack recalls from his office at Irwin Marine on Union Avenue in Lakeport. “My Dad told me he was going to be fixing up a boat, so he needed me to drive the boat and fill it up with gas and take it back to the boat slip. It was one of the old Laker boats. I was 7 or 8 years old,” he laughs at the memory.

Certainly things were different back then in the 1930s and 40s.

Boat traffic was not heavy and there were fewer restrictions on who could drive a boat. And the Irwin kids were comfortable around boats and the water, because they grew up that way. In-

deed, Jack recalls that he used to swim off the Pier at his father’s Winnipesaukee Gardens.

He remembers the music at the Gardens. “We had some really great musicians like Duke Ellington and Harry James. I used to run a spotlight at the Gardens when I was a kid. The dances in the summer were Tuesday through Friday nights and they ended at midnight.”

He paints an image with words of the hard work that seemed more like play because it was so interesting and fun. (What kid wouldn’t have wanted to grow up around a dance hall and famous musicians, as well as power boats and daring acts?)

“In 1929, we had the Miss Winnipesaukee speedboats because my Dad had the Chris Craft franchise. But then the stock market crashed and people couldn’t afford boats any longer. My Dad took back the boats that people could not afford to keep.”

Suddenly, Jim Irwin had six or seven boats and, never short of new ideas, decided he could recoup any losses by offering Miss Winnipesaukee speed boat rides at the Weirs. “They were 26 to 28 foot boats, and they were numbered; people said boat number 5 was the fastest so everyone wanted to ride that boat.

People would wait in line for a ride and we ran the boats seven days a week,” Jack recalls.

Jim Irwin Sr. had been around boats since the day he stepped off the train, ready to carve out a career as a musician. He may not have known, way back then, what he was starting and how his talents would shape the area he came to call home. But he saw the boats here and there on Winnipesaukee and he heard the excitement as vacationers talked about being out on the lake in a boat.

And he likely knew that, no matter what happened, from stock market crashes to war to good times, boating was here to stay.

There are two terms that help explain these rules.

• Stand-on Vessel: The vessel that should maintain its course and speed.

• Give-way Vessel: The vessel that must take early and substantial action to avoid collision by stopping, slowing down, or changing course.

When preparing to go out on a vessel, the operator must check that the legally required equipment is on board.

Personal Flotation Devices (PFDs) • All vessels must carry one wearable (Type I, II, III, or V) USCG-approved life jacket (PFD) for each person on board.

Type V PFDs must be worn to be acceptable.

• All life jackets must be in good and serviceable condition and must be readily accessible. The life jackets must be of proper size for the intended wearer. Sizing for life jackets is based on body weight and chest size and can be determined by the manufacturer’s label.

• In addition to the above requirements, vessels 16 feet in length or longer (except canoes and kayaks) must have one Type IV USCG-approved throwable PFD on board and immediately available.

• Children 12 years of age or younger must wear a USCGapproved life jacket at all times while underway on a vessel, unless the vessel is completely enclosed by railings at least three feet high and constructed such that a small child cannot fall through them. It is strongly recommended that children of all ages wear their life jackets.

• The operator of a “ski craft” must wear a USCG-approved life jacket.

• Each person being towed behind a vessel must wear a USCG-approved life jacket.

Enjoy the Beach at a NH State Park

he warm weather is here, and this is when the Lakes Region really shines. There is so much to do in the area, including lots of opportunities for outdoor recreation. Locals and visitors alike can enjoy fishing, camping, waterskiing, hiking, swimming, paddle boarding, kayaking, tennis, golf, and of course…boating.

Many of these activities can be experienced at a state park. New Hampshire has 93 state park properties that provide recreation for all ages and abilities. These parks include beaches, campgrounds, historic sites, natural areas with a multitude of trails, and much more to explore. Check out one of the local state parks this summer, and get ready to have some warm weather fun.

Beginning in North Conway on Echo Lake Road is Echo Lake State Park, located in the White Mountains of New Hampshire.

This state park is a great place to take the family for a swim and picnic. A scenic trail around the lake provides great views of the sheer, 700-foot Cathedral Ledge which towers over the lake. A mile-long auto road and hiking trails lead to the top of Cathedral Ledge where views across the Saco River Valley to the White Mountains can be enjoyed. Both Cathedral and nearby White Horse ledges are popular rock and ice climbing walls as well.

White Lake State Park off Route 16 in Tamworth is so popular that it’s been known to sell out on nice weekends and holidays.

The park lies along the shore of White Lake, which is a glacial lake. During the Ice Age, glacial ice was buried beneath glacial debris. When the ice melted, a depression was created which gradually filled with water. I brought my kids there at the end of the summer once, when the crowds were thinner, and we swam, enjoyed a pleasant walk on the trail around the lake, and took advantage of the playground by the water. It was easy to see why it would be a popular family destination. Other than swimming and

Wentworth State Park is located at 297 Governor Wentworth Highway in Wolfeboro. This park spans 50 acres Ellacoya State Park beach and is located on the shore of scenic Wentworth Lake. Popular activities include swimming, picnicking, and fishing. Picnic tables and flush toilets are provided. For more information, call 603-569-3699. Nearby on Wentworth Farm Road is the Governor Wentworth Historic Site.

Take in some state history and explore the remains of a northern plantation built just before the outbreak of the American Revolution by New Hampshire’s second Royal Governor, John Wentworth. The mansion burned to the ground in 1820 and became the site of an archaeological dig where artifacts were carefully

pieced together. Visit this scenic state park and walk where the governor walked.

Ahern State Park at 43 Great Bay Lane in Laconia, spans 128 acres, with 3,500 feet of shoreline on Lake Winnisquam. Swimming, canoeing, picnicking, and walking trails provide plenty of summer fun at this park. For details, call 603-227-8745.

In Gilford, on Scenic Road, is Ellacoya State Park. (I brought my children to this park when we moved to New Hampshire, and was amazed at the view from the beach. It felt like we were at the ocean with the vast expanse of water.) Located on the southwest shore of Lake Winnipesaukee, the 600foot long sandy beach has views across the water all the way to the Sandwich and Ossipee mountains on a clear day. Enjoy a day of swimming and picnicking with the family. The campground includes 37 sites available by reservation only and offers threeway hookups for RVs. Wellington State Park at 614 West Shore Road in Bristol offers the largest freshwater swimming beach in the New Hampshire state park system. The park also maintains volleyball and horseshoe courts as well as a snack bar that offers a variety of snacks, ice cream, cold drinks, beach and picnic items, and souvenirs.

Gas grills are allowed along with wood and/or charcoal fires for cooking. A developed boat launch operated by N.H. Fish & Game adjoins the park, providing boaters free year-round access to Newfound Lake. Kayak rentals are also available. Wellington State Park also has an extensive trail system. The peninsula nature trail features picnic areas, designated fishing areas, plant identification markers, and spectacular views of Newfound Lake and the Cliff and Belle Islands. Aquatic Nuisance Species in New Hampshire If you like to boat, you have likely heard (or read) that some species of aquatic wildlife and plants have become unwanted invaders in New Hampshire’s waters. To help combat this problem, it is important to learn more about aquatic nuisance species, the laws and rules around possession and use of aquatic species, and what you can do to help stop the invasion.

To prevent the transport of aquatic nuisance species, it is vital that you thoroughly clean all recreational equipment. Whenever leaving a body of water, you should: 1. Inspect your boat and trailer, removing all aquatic organisms (zebra mussels and any aquatic plants) you see before leaving the area.

2. Drain your motor, live well and bilge on land before leaving the area.

3. Empty bait buckets on land before leaving the area.

4. Never release live bait into a body of water or release aquatic anmals from one body of water into another.

5. Rinse your boat, propeller, trailer, live well and equipment; and remove by hand anything trapped between the boat and the trailer.

6. Air dry your boat and equipment for as long as possible; five days is optimal.

7. Flush the engines’ cooling system with hot water.

8. Apply antifouling materials, such as paint and films, to boat hulls, trim tabs, water ports, transducers and swimming platforms to discourage zebra mussel attachment.

9. Avoid boating through dense beds of aquatic plants.

10. Report any new suspicious plant growths to the NH DES at 603-271-2248.

Fishing Guides: a line on a most favorable experience

ne of the best aspects of writing for The Laker is that the assignments take me out of my comfort zone. Things were no different this time, when my editor asked me to do a piece on fishing guides. As many readers are aware, a fishing guide is a person who shows, helps, and/or teaches people how to fish.

My first and only exposure to fishing, or angling, occurred more than six decades ago when, as a nine year old grammar school student, a friend convinced me to give the sport a try. The experience consisted of using a drop line while standing on the end of a dock in my hometown of New London, Connecticut.

After what seemed like an eternity, I landed a small, very boney fish called a conner. My victory was short-lived, as a seagull immediately swooped down, snatched my prize, and left a small deposit on my brand new Keds.

This undistinguished experience aside, the American Sportfishing Association (ASA) tells us that, last year, an estimated 49 million people in the United States engaged in recreational fishing. This makes fishing in freshwater the second leading form of outdoor recreation in the country, trailing only various forms of walking, jogging, or running. According to the ASA, recreational fishing had a $115 billion impact on the nation’s economy, and generated more than $15 billion in state and federal taxes.

Close to home, more than 165,000 people purchased New Hampshire freshwater fishing licenses during 2018. Sixty-four percent of these were in-state residents, who paid $45.00 for the privilege of fishing for the 57 species of resident fish that inhabit New Hampshire’s rivers, streams, lakes, and ponds. Meanwhile, out-of-state residents paid $63.00 each for licenses.

While I am not a fisherman, I do not need convincing about the important role played by well-trained freshwater fishing guides.

It doesn’t take a genius to understand that, with so many recreational fishermen out there, conditions are rife for both good and bad behavior. Years ago, I experienced the latter up close as a tourism management consultant in the state of Alaska. While evaluating tourism potential in Quinhagak, a village of approximately 600, (mostly Yup’ik people), situated along the Bering Sea coast, some of the community’s elders exhibited enmity toward me. I soon learned why. Several years earlier, a small company had obtained permission to conduct sportfishing camps a few miles upstream, on the bank of the Kanektok River—the village’s sole source of drinking water. Apparently, the village’s directive to avoid dumping bodily waste into the river was ignored. As a result, there was a health concern.

In order to get a grasp of freshwater fish guiding in New Hampshire, I decided to take two steps. First, I sought out New Hampshire Fish and Game (NHF&G), guardian of the state’s fish, wildlife, and marine resources. From NHF&G, I learned that 87 residents paid a $100 guide’s licensing fee during 2018, while 12 non-residents also became licensed guides. I also learned that New Hampshire’s freshwater guides offer a wide range of fishing techniques. These include watercraft (boats, canoes, and kayaks) and ice fishing, trolling (i.e., tailing a baited line behind a moving boat), bass fishing, and the most popular of all—fly fishing.

My next step was to seek out a licensed fishing guide to provide a first-hand explanation of the services that are provided. It was my good fortune to be directed to Tim Moore, owner and guide at Tim Moore Outdoors, LLC. After growing up in Portsmouth, Moore followed his childhood dream to become a fishing guide by filling out a state application form, passing a 50-question written examination, and paying the $100 licensing fee.

Things are not quite that simple. The state requires that its fishing guides be at least 18 years of age, hold both a guide and a freshwater fishing license, and have a spotless Fish and Game background, with no criminal record. All fishing guides must be certified in both CPR and first aid.

According to RSA 207:1 XIII, the guide’s license allows her/him to direct, aid, assist, or instruct other persons in taking wildlife within the state; it also permits the guide to charge a fee for services.

has a 17½ foot center-console craft that seats two adults. His largest parties are for ice fishing occasions, when he has accommodated as many as 24 fishermen.

Moore is frequently called upon to teach people how to bait a hook, fish, and to assist them in cleaning their catch. These necessities aside, I was curious about what constitutes an ideal guided experience. Moore described the optimum experience as one that provides good fishing, comfort, customer service, good weather—ideally, cloudy with light winds—and great conversation.

If that’s the case, I wondered what the fishing-experience-fromhell would looks like. Moore was quick to respond, “People who show up for ice fishing poorly dressed. Nothing ruins a good fishing experience like cold, wet clients. They’re freezing, so it doesn’t matter whether they’re catching anything or not.”

parently, you can lead a fisherman to water, but you can’t make him think.

I wondered what other factors can produce an unhappy experience. “Sometimes people in a fishing party just don’t like one another.” Another potential problem—one similar to that experienced by Arctic wildlife guides—is unrealistic expectations. Anglers arrive anticipating a large haul of fish. “They’ve paid good money to hire a professional fishing guide and expect amazing results.” Most people realize that conditions can be unpredictable, but not everyone is understanding.

When I asked Moore about his favorite angling style, I expected him to choose fly fishing, as it is the bread-and-butter of most New Hampshire freshwater guides. He surprised me when he said that kayak fishing is his favorite. Asked to explain, he replied, “Kayaks provide a much more intimate experience (than boats). You sit right on the water line. It’s quiet . . . no motor noises . . . you’re really in touch with nature.”

In fact, Moore enjoys kayak fishing so much that his company, Tim Moore Outdoors LLC, offers an annual Kayak University at Cottage Place on Squam Lake. This year, Kayak University will be held from May 31 through June 2. The event brings together professional kayak anglers and people interested in this type of fishing. There will be seminars, opportunities to fish together for a day and a half, and plenty of time to socialize.

After talking with the people at New Hampshire Fish and Game as well as Tim Moore, I feel confident that the state’s lakes, ponds, rivers, and streams and the future of freshwater fishing are in very good hands.

Concerts on or near the Water

hat could be better than an outdoor summer concert on a balmy evening? When the concert is on or near the water, you can arrive by boat, making the experience pure magic. If the concert is a short walk from boat docking, you can avoid parking and traffic by arriving via boat and strolling to a concert.

In the pretty town of Tuftonboro, the popular Summer Concert Series at the Pavilion takes place at 6:30 pm, weather permitting during July and August. The concerts are presented in the pavilion by the town beach and many concert goers dock their boats offshore.

The free concerts also offer a concession with burgers, hotdogs, ice cream and drinks. For a minimal charge you can have dinner while listening to the music, courtesy the Tuftonboro Parks and Recreation Department. Spread out a blanket on the beach or bring a lawn chair and sit back and enjoy the music. Because the concert series takes place near the waterfront, you can also choose to stay on your boat and take in the music from the lake.

Center Harbor is a pretty town on the shores of Lake Winnipesaukee. In the summer, the Center Harbor Parks and Recreation Band Concert Series performs in the town bandstand near the Bay Beach, Tuftonboro.

What better place to take in a concert than at famed Weirs Beach? On Friday, July 5, the Patio Garden Restaurant at Weirs Beach will kick off its seventh season of summer jazz concerts.

The Weirs Jazz Series was recognized as the “Best of NH” during its inaugural season in 2013, and has grown to feature jazz acts from Boston, NYC, and other jazz hotspots. While the 2019 Friday and Saturday schedule is still be announced (as of press time), the Sunday schedule will feature the Boardwalk Jazz Quartet with Rob Ames. The house band for the Weirs Jazz series, the Boardwalk Jazz Quartet has been playing at Weirs Beach on Sunday nights in July and August for over 20 years. The group plays jazz standards from the 1930’s through the 1970’s, as well as arrangements of contemporary tunes and originals. The bandleader is Rob Ames, whose 2016 record album of all originals, “Songs from the Boardwalk,” featured his soprano saxophone playing. The band features Steve Warnick on keyboards, Al Hospers on bass, and Dave Ellis on drums.

Easy Recipes for Lunch on the Boat

ello, my fellow foodie friends. what a wonderful time of year it is in the Lakes Region. Warm weather is officially upon us and we are all ecstatic about that fact. Using some terminology from one of my favorite Christmas specials, we can say goodbye to the Snow Mizer and welcome in the Heat Mizer. The population in the area will easily more than double for a few months, which is always a win for the local economy. It’s that time of year where we turn in our winter jackets for t-shirts, our boots for sandals, the mountains turn from white to green, the lakes from white to blue, motorcycles come out of hibernation, and thousands of boats can be seen on the beautiful lakes. It’s truly a wonderful and much-welcome transformation.

Those who have a boat and enjoy that lifestyle have got a great gig going. Like any form of transportation, it obviously requires some serious responsibilities to stay safe, but being surrounded by water all day is something special. I joke with my friends that when in a no-stress, beautiful environment, I refer to it as a Kumbaya situation where I feel we should all hold hands and look to the sky and sing…but I digress. It’s always great to see people water skiing and wake boarding. There are many boats just dropping anchor in the middle of the lake and lubing up with sunscreen and kicking back and relaxing and soaking up the rays, and some love to fish.

One thing they all have in common when out on the lake all day is the need to eat and drink. Many boats pull into a slip at restaurants right on the lake in Meredith, Center Harbor, Alton, Wolfeboro, and the Weirs and its neighboring towns of all these ports. Today’s theme however is to pack your own lake-worthy menu of goodies in a cooler or two to keep you nourished in the sun. Many of these dishes are fairly simple with very few direc-

tions, so this is a bonus in that you will get some scrumptious recipes for your money’s worth.

You can always use the “picnic mentality” for sure and pack the usual suspects like sandwiches, cold fried chicken, chips, cheese and crackers and it’s also a great way to get rid of certain leftovers. However, we are going in a different direction today.

Our boating menu offers some delicious things to make a day or two in advance and to bring for a day on the boat. Most I know prefer to pick over the menu of the day and have a nice smaller lunch, but all these items are user friendly regardless of when you are eating. I’ll share some pretty cool summery salads and many appetizer/main course items that can work as either and some fun sweets. As much as I love to cook and eat, I love the grazing mentality in situations like this instead of a big sit-down lunch, but again, to each their own because they will all work in any situation over the course of your day.

To start off, let’s work on a couple of great salads for hot summer days. For all salads, once completely mixed, I would maybe suggest putting them in a large Ziploc when placing in the refrigerator. This will take up less room in the refrigerator, plus even more so, pack in the cooler this way for the same reason. Bring an empty bowl to serve the salad when on the boat for ease of use.

My all-time favorite on such a day is a fresh fruit salad. Whether you bring a fruit salad or not, I always suggest some oranges/apples/grapes and that kind of thing. I don’t see the need to share a fruit salad recipe since making fruit salad isn’t rocket science.

There is a twist on a fruit salad as this salad’s main ingredients are a sweet fruit and maybe my favorite veggie. So, let’s start with a Watermelon Cucumber Salad. Watermelon Cucumber Salad 1 seedless watermelon 1 large cucumber 1 red onion, small dice salt to taste 1/3 cup feta cheese ½ cup balsamic vinegar Cut the watermelon in half, cut the pulp out of the rind and dice into ¾ 1 inch squares. Cut in half lengthwise and then cut each half into half-moon slices, about ¼ of an inch.

Put all the ingredients, except the feta, into a large bowl and combine. Put into a container and refrigerate. When packing the food cooler, include the feta cheese and use it as a garnish on the salad. It is nicely refreshing.

This next recipe is a combination of two of my favorites: Cole slaw and anything buffaloed, so here we have a Buffalo Cole Slaw. I have a few buddies who always request this when I invite them over for barbecues. It’s a cool and refreshing salad with a kick. This one is best if it sits in the fridge for a day or two before heading out on the lake.

Cole Slaw Dressing ¼ cup mayo ¼ cup of favorite hot sauce ¼ cup apple cider vinegar 1 tbsp granulated garlic ½ tbsp salt Buffalo Cole Slaw ½ head green cabbage, thinly sliced ½ large sweet onion, thinly sliced 4 stalks celery, chopped 2 medium carrots, peeled and shredded 1 cup crumbled bleu cheese 1 tbsp chopped chives In a large bowl, combine the veggies and ¾ cup of the bleu cheese. Mix well. Whisk all the dressing ingredients together until completely blended. Pour over the vegetable mix and toss using a set of tongs until completely combined. Throw it all in a Ziploc, and when serving, garnish with the chives and remaining bleu cheese, cover and let set in the refrigerator. Yummy!

This last salad gets used as a luncheon main course much of the time, as it can be a substantial meal if that is what you want it to be. Cucumber makes another appearance, but this time it is paired with a protein and a classic southwestern favorite. Let’s kick back and make a delicious Chicken Cucumber Avocado Salad that is always a winner. This is known as a main course kind of salad much of the time, but as we know, any salad can be used as the lunch entrée or as a side accoutrement for a bigger main dish. This is a no-lose situation, regardless of how you want to use this great salad. As is one of the themes here today, it is very easy. After this, we will get into some great shrimp and beef

Chicken Cucumber Avocado Salad 1 cooked rotisserie chicken, deboned, shredded, and skin on or off depending on your preference 1 large English cucumber, cut in ½ lengthwise, then cut in ¼ inch sliced half moons 4-5 Roma tomatoes, diced ½ red onion, thinly sliced, maybe on a mandolin 2 avocados, peeled, pitted and diced ½ cup fresh chopped cilantro 3 tbsp olive oil Juice of 3 limes Salt and pepper to season You can buy a cooked rotisserie chicken, or buy a raw chicken and cook it yourself and let cool, than rip it apart as needed. Mix your shredded chicken meat with cukes, tomatoes, onion, avocados, and chopped cilantro in a large bowl. Drizzle with the olive oil, lime juice, and season with salt and pepper. Toss gently and mix well to blend all flavors. I like to let it sit for 4-6 hours minimum before serving.

something more substantial with some fun protein dishes. One of my favorite summertime foods is shrimp. Shrimp is truly the chicken of the sea in that where chicken is the most versatile of land proteins, shrimp has that distinction from the sea. Anyone who adores shrimp as I do always enjoys a good shrimp cocktail, although I am heavy-handed on my horseradish in the homemade cocktail sauce. It is more pink than red as the white takes over. Yup, horseradish is my friend.

Like a fruit salad, I don’t think I need to share how to cook shrimp cocktail, as it is extremely simple, but let’s talk Southwestern Shrimp Cocktail. I find it vital to cook the largest shrimp you can get. I use either a U-12/15 or a 16/20. The bigger the shrimp, the better the flavor and you get a great pop and crunch when taking that first bite. The shrimp are cooked as you would a shrimp cocktail, but drain them as they are maybe ½ to ¾ cooked. The reason for undercooking is because they will be tossed in a chunky homemade salsa and the make-up of the salsa is tomato and lime/lemon juice in particular - it will finish the cooking process with the acid from those ingredients. Shock them in an ice bath right after draining, as I have a bowl of large ice cubes in water, then seconds after draining the shrimp, put the shrimp in a second bowl, and then dump the ice water bath over the shrimp and gently stir the water/shrimp to make sure the shrimp cools and stops cooking asap. Leave them in the ice water for 20-30 minutes, then drain and refrigerate.

I generally make my salsa first. Everyone has a different taste preference, but here is my quick salsa recipe. Again, I like mine chunky and not soupy. Once the shrimp is combined, serve it over sliced garlic baguette bread croutons with a shrimp and salsa on top of each crouton. This salsa recipe makes a decent amount, so depending on how many shrimp you want to cook,

you could hold back on mixing all the salsa with the shrimp and use it with some tortilla chips on the boat as well, especially if you have some passengers who don’t enjoy shellfish.

Salsa 5 beef steak tomatoes 1 large red onion 1 orange bell pepper 1 yellow bell pepper 1 red bell pepper 1 green bell pepper 2 limes for its juice 1 lemon for juice 2 bunches of fresh cilantro, chopped 2 bunches scallions, chopped 1 tbsp chili powder 1 tbsp ground cumin 1 tbsp salt 1 tbsp fresh ground black pepper 1 tbsp granulated garlic Your First Service!

much salsa to it as needed to get a good consistency. The shrimp should be almost lost in the salsa. However, don’t go too far in advance. Mix no more than 2 hours before serving, because as I said, the shrimp will overcook and become tough if they are combined longer than that. Once ready to eat, spoon a bunch on a plate and eat the shrimp/salsa together. They work great together. I am offering an alternative on how to eat though, and this is my favorite way to do so, and that is on the garlic bread crouton.

So as for the shrimp on the baguette crouton, which is awesome, it’s a great simple recipe. This is also how I would suggest eating the next shrimp recipe coming up. So if you buy a long baguette about the diameter of a 1 ½ inch circle, cut them in ½ inch slices. I do so on a diagonal, which will give you more surface room to lay the shrimp/salsa on top. Spray a sheet pan with cooking spray, and lay down the circles. In a small pot, add a couple sticks of butter, 3-4 tbsp chopped garlic, and 1 tsp granulated garlic and melt and stir well. With a pastry brush, brush the top of the bread circles so they are well absorbed with the butter mix. Flip the bread circles over and repeat the process. Sprinkle the top of each with a pinch of grated Parmesan cheese and bake in a preheated 350-degree oven for 5 minutes or so. Check them.

They should be browning and still somewhat soft, but also firm.

Let cool. Once completely cooled, put them in a Ziploc, gently squeeze out all excess air, and seal to stay fresh. Bring them with you and when serving the shrimp/salsa mix, spoon onto the crouton individually and pop in your mouth. This is truly a treat that is above and beyond. These croutons also work great if you make your own French onion soup.

It’s time to share another addicting shrimp recipe that instead of a Southwestern theme, has somewhat of an Asian flavor to

it. Where the last shrimp recipe had more of a spicy and much seasoned touch, this recipe has a sweet tang and is more like shrimp candy to me. This one is a Sticky Sesame Ginger Garlic Shrimp. I must repeat again however, that when served on garlic bread baguette, these are outstanding I guarantee these will be big-time winners as was the last recipe. Depending on how many people on your boat for the day, you may want to consider at least doubling this recipe as a pound of big shrimp will only get you 14-20 shrimp depending on which you buy. Again, I suggest U-12/25 or 15/20 shrimp. For those ignorant to these terms, these numbers are based on how many shrimp you get by the pound.

When you see numbers much larger, that means the shrimp gets smaller, which is fine in certain sauté dishes and other things, but if you want a quality shrimp cocktail sized shrimp, the bigger the better, unlike the shrimp cocktail packaged rings you can find at any local supermarket. Those are more like a 40/50 is my guess, maybe 40/50. I strongly suggest bigger, but the call is yours. As the classic line goes, “whatever blows your skirt up.”

In a large bowl, add soy sauce, garlic, brown sugar, rice wine vinegar, sesame seeds, ginger, and 1 tbsp olive oil and mix very well. Add the raw shrimp and lightly toss so the shrimp are well coated. Cover and let sit in the fridge for at least 2 hours or so.

Once ready, cook in a medium skillet. Add the remaining tbsp of olive oil. On a medium-high heat, drop the shrimp in one at a time using a slotted spoon to take the shrimp out of the marinade. Cook the shrimp 2-3 minutes on each side, pull from the pan and set aside. Add the marinade to the skillet and let it simmer until beginning to thicken to the point that it looks like a syrup. Add the shrimp back to the skillet, toss, and turn off the heat. Let cool at room temp and then put in a container and refrigerate. Bring the chopped scallions with you on the boat and once you spoon the shrimp on a garlic crouton, sprinkle with some scallions and start inhaling these beauties. Also, if you want this as a dinner at home, once in the skillet, serve over hot rice.

You can’t go wrong either way. It is both sweet and decadent at the same time.

It’s now time for some beef options for your main course.

I’ll give you a quick marinade, but all in all, the principle here is quite simple. The idea is to buy your favorite cut of beef to grill steak tips as you would for any cook out at home, for the process is the same. You marinade the tips for hours, and grill.

The difference here is to undercook more than usual, let cool at room temp, and package them and refrigerate. There are two key things to consider. If you don’t own a needler, get one now. It will cost about $20 and is an essential tool to help marinade any meat. The idea behind the needler is that once you do so, the marinade actually works its way into the meat. It so makes the flavor legendary. It also makes for a more tender tip. It’s a win/ win. Remember, cook the tips to rare, no more than medium-

rare. As for the second thing to keep in mind, although they need to be refrigerated, it’s important to let them out at room temp for a couple of hours before eating. Also, depending on what marinade you go with, bring some extra with you for service time. I put marinade on the bottom of a plate, place down as many tips that fit, stick a toothpick in each of them, and then drizzle the extra marinade or sauce over them. Serve as is so people can grab whenever they want by the individual toothpicks.

So, as for marinades, there are as many marinades out there as there are people and I’m sure you all have your favorite. That is the whole idea of cooking. Go with what you consider the best.

My favorite is a Maple Garlic Teriyaki. I use 2 parts teriyaki to 1 part maple syrup, load it up with as much garlic as you like, and I also hit it heavily with powdered ginger and black pepper. Turns the beef tips into tender pieces of beef candy. You can use any barbecue sauce, Italian or Balsamic dressing, buffalo sauce, or anything your heart desires. I strongly suggest you try the Maple Garlic Teriyaki Marinade/Sauce. It’s truly outstanding.

Now we move to the dessert portion of our program. Again, it’s all about cool and refreshing on a hot day in the middle of the lake. Kind of in the same frame of mind as salads where I instantly think of fresh fruit and berries. That is where I want to start today. This recipe has a great combo of fresh berries, pound cake, fresh whipped cream and a raspberry sauce. I like to call this one a Berry Lasagna. I’m a huge fan of trifles, and in essence, that is what this basically is. Using the lasagna mentality, sliced pound cake are the noodles in this lasagna.

Berry Lasagna 1 ½ cups sugar, separated 12 oz fresh raspberries

1 cup heavy cream 1 tbsp vanilla extract 2 10.75 oz frozen pound cakes 1.2 cup unsweetened coconut 12 oz fresh blueberries Stir 1 cup sugar and 1/3 cup water together in a small saucepan over medium heat until the sugar dissolves completely, about 5 minutes. Add the sugar mixture and the raspberries to a blender and blend until completely smooth. Strain the raspberries through a fine-mesh strainer into a small bowl “if” you don’t want the raspberry seeds included.

Beat the heavy cream with the vanilla and the remaining ½ cup sugar in a medium bowl with an electric mixer on medium speed until stiff peaks form, 2 to 3 minutes.

Place a pound cake on its side and slice lengthwise into 1/4-inch thick strips to make the lasagna “noodles.” Repeat with the second pound cake. Place 2 pieces of cake side-by-side in the bottom of an 8-inch square baking dish. Pour 1/4 cup of the raspberry sauce over the cake and smooth out with a runner spatula. Sprinkle with 2 tablespoons coconut, dollop with 1/4 of the whipped cream with the spatula and sprinkle with 1/4 of the blueberries. Repeat this process 3 more times so you have a total of 4 layers. Chill for 6 hours and up to overnight. Slice and serve. You will enjoy!

Lastly, here is a sure-fire cure to wet your whistle on a hot day, especially on the lake. I’m a huge fan of puddings, and I think I would have to say pistachio is my all-time favorite, whether in this dessert or just by the dishful. This has always been a huge fan favorite at most of my family barbecues and is requested quite often, especially by the kids. This is generally called Pistachio Pudding Salad, but trust me, this is so much of a dessert as opposed to a salad.

Pistachio Pudding Salad One 20 oz can crushed pineapple, drained One 3 oz package of pistachio pudding One 8 oz tub of whipped cream 2 cups mini marshmallows If you want simple, here it is. In a large mixing bowl, combine the crushed pineapple and the pudding mix thoroughly. Fold in the whipped cream and marshmallows and top the whole thing with the ½ cup of pistachios and refrigerate for a couple of hours.

The kids and the adults will love this one.

• At what age are children required to wear life jackets?

All children 12 years old and younger must wear a life jacket when being transported in a boat. It is recommended everyone wear a life jacket.

• Is it legal to have alcohol aboard a vessel?

Although it is legal to have alcohol aboard a vessel, operators found to be impaired to any degree will be arrested for boating while intoxicated. In addition, check with the local town where you will be boating for any ordinances prohibiting alcohol in public places.

• How do you know the capacity limit of your boat?

On most boats, the capacity for the boat (weight limit and number of persons) is listed on a plate located near the helm (operator's area).

• How do I get a temporary boating education certificate?

A 14-day temporary boating education certificate can be obtained through an agent. You will have to take and pass a boating safety examination. Call NH Marine Patrol at 293-2037.

• Where can I get a temporary boating education certificate?

Certificates are available at a variety of locations throughout the state. To participate in the 14-Day Temporary Certification, contact the New Hampshire Department of Safety at 1-888-254-2125 to find the closest location or you can also determine where these locations are based on a sign at their location identifying them as a 14-Day Temporary Certificate Agent. Individuals must be a minimum of 16 years of age to take the test and must get at least 80% to pass the test. If the individual fails, he/she will have the option to take another test at another date or pursue another option for certification. Individuals must provide picture identification at the time of the test.

T

he dream of owning a boat could have remained just that for Bill Verner: a dream. But he found a way to get his boat and in the process, he has made it possible for many, many people to share his love of Lake Winnipesaukee.

Bill is a retired firefighter and a veteran from Massachusetts and he spends a lot of time in the Lakes Region. It could be said he is on the lake - come summer or winter - more than most yearround residents.

Winnipesaukee Boat Tours was born when Bill realized he could indeed afford a boat if he offered tours to the paying public. It was a great idea, and he formed his company about four to five years ago. In his first boat, a Bow Rider, he took families and groups for a day or half-day or a few hours out on the lake.

In 2015, I took the boat tour and spent a wonderful day on Winnipesaukee. As I recall, it was a hot July day and it was refreshing to be touring the lake where it was decidedly cooler. Bill knows the lake very well; he took me around Winnipesaukee, stopping at little coves and driving slowly by some of the islands and sharing historical information and other fun facts.

Thus, last summer seemed the perfect time to get back on the boat with Captain Bill, because, since my last time on a Winnipesaukee Boat Tour, he has traded in his original Bow Rider for a new boat. It is a “couch on the water” as he laughingly refers to his 27-foot-long StarCraft pontoon boat, with a capacity for 14 people.

Bill met me at the Weirs Beach docks on a sunny late June morning. It was fairly early and I enjoyed the quiet while I waited for Bill to arrive. Only a few early joggers and others enjoying the boardwalk were about. Soon, I saw a boat approaching, and I knew it was Bill, wearing his signature red shirt and cap.

The pontoon boat is indeed a beauty. After Bill tied up the boat at the docks, I was able to step right on board and take a comfortable seat.

Safety comes first with Captain Bill, and it always will. He explains his boating excursion business started when his grandson was born. You can feel Bill’s pride in his grandson, Logan. Bill says if he was going to have a boat, it had to be a safe place for the child. And what could be better for safety than a large pontoon boat?

Bill points to the areas of the boat where he keeps life jackets, and medical supplies. He is a retired firefighter and well able to handle any emergency. However, medical issues and emergencies are not on the minds of those who are on vacation; they just want to get out on the water. Nevertheless, Bill is ever-aware of how important following safety and navigational rules can be when on the water.

As we prepared to head out onto the lake, Bill asked, “So where do you want to go?” That question, for me, is rather like asking a kid what he wants if confronted with a counter full of sweets in a candy store. Because I could not decide, I suggested Bill show me some of the places his customers often ask to see.

We headed first through the Weirs Channel, with access to Paugus Bay. Bill drove through the channel slowly, and always follows the speed limits. “Paugus Bay is the outlet to Lake Winnipesaukee,” he explained as we drifted past all the little cottages you just don’t necessarily see from the road.

Eventually, we turned around and headed back through the Weirs Channel. Ahead of us, Bill pointed out the Ossipee Mountain Range and commented on how pretty the mountains are as seen from the lake during fall’s foliage season.

Although Bill will pick up customers at whatever location they wish, such as their lakeside cottage or a marina, many choose to meet him at the Weirs Beach docks. “I want people to relax on the boat, and have a good time. I always suggest they bring a cooler full of snacks.”

As we head toward the Governor’s Island area, Bill explains he has regular customers who have gotten older and don’t own a boat any longer. But they still want to get out on the water, and taking a Lake Winnipesaukee Boat tour a few times a summer fits their needs.

“I offer two tour choices,” Bill explains. “A captain’s choice tour (some of the places Bill thinks customers may like) or you choose where you want to go. In both cases, I drive and you just sit back and relax.”

Bill also has water skis and tubes for those who want to try these fun sporting activities.

Nearing Governor’s Island, Bill slows so I can get a good wa-

ter view of all the large homes and boat houses. It is fun to see Governor’s Island on one side of us, and right across the lake, the Glendale area.

“Let’s head to Sally’s Gut,” Bill suggests. I am no great scholar of places on the lake, so I let Bill decide where we will go. As we approach the area, he explains that Stonedam Island, which we see on one side of us, is open to the public with hiking trails.

You need to have a boat to get there, but it is a great, peaceful nature area. Indeed, I do not see a single home or cottage hugging the shoreline of Stonedam; it is a natural area kept pristine for wildlife and visitors.

We glide through a cove area and this is definitely the way to see the little inlets on a sunny, yet quiet summer morning. Not many people are stirring, and some cottages and lakefront homes await summer or weekend residents to arrive later in the day.

away, allowing the kayaker space to maneuver. We wave hello but that is all: disturbing the peace and tranquility of a morning’s kayak on the lake would seem disrespectful.

“I have been to 90 percent of the northern end of the lake,” Bill says. It is a popular area for those taking the boat tour. Bill offers sunset cruises, and I can’t think of a more wonderful way to watch the sun set over the lake on a hot summer’s day.

It is amazing how fast the hours fly by when on the lake so we head back to the Weirs area. On the way, we pass the Akwa Marina Yacht Club, where a large white outdoor tent is set up, probably for a party or a wedding.

Bill points out a tall lighthouseshaped structure on private land, near the water’s edge. It is one of the many intriguing buildings/areas on the lake. This is what makes Lake Winnipesaukee so fascinating: not only the water sports fun, but also the lake culture and stories that have sprung up over the years.

Certainly, many people are taking advantage of Lake Winnipesaukee Boat Tours. Bill says about 60 percent of his business is to repeat customers. “I do a lot of family parties and tours for people here on vacation.”

Bill stresses that because safety comes first, now and then

a tour must be rescheduled if bad weather suddenly comes in. (Indeed, at the close of our tour a few years ago, the hot and humid morning gave way to cloudy skies around noon.

Bill made sure he had me back at the docks and himself home well before a thunderstorm predicted for late afternoon began.)

“I have been doing this for four years. I am open for tours from mid May to mid October, and I still love it. It is great in the summer, but pretty special during foliage season too. People are in awe as they look around at everything, as seen from the water,” he adds.

Bill plans to keep offering boat tours “until it’s no longer fun. I really enjoy showing people the lake and sharing its beauty.”

New Hampshire Department of Safety Boating Education Courses Overview - The New Hampshire Classroom Course covers a variety of topics including boat navigation, boating safety equipment, invasive aquatic species and laws and rules. This instructor-led class incorporates a range of learning methods consisting of lecture, videos, and student discussion.

Certification Cards - Upon successful completion of the course, students will leave with a boating certificate which is valid for 45 days. The permanent certificate card will be automatically mailed to the student’s address entered at the time of registration.

Who Needs Boating Education? Everyone 16 years of age and older who operates a motorboat over 25 horsepower on New Hampshire waters must have a valid boating education certificate.

Age Requirements - Students may register and take the course at 15 years old, although a boating education certificate will not be issued until their 16th birthday.

The Canoe:

a time-honored form of transportation made in New Hampshire

ow many readers are aware of the world’s oldest form of transportation? If you think it has something to do with a wheel, then you are mistaken. Many historians date the invention of the wheel to 4,000 BCE. Meanwhile, it is believed that the first canoes were built approximately 4,000 years earlier.

The Merriam-Webster Dictionary defines a canoe as a lightweight, narrow vessel, typically pointed at both ends and open on top, propelled by one or more seated or kneeling paddlers, facing in the direction of travel, and using a single-bladed paddle.

The term canoe actually comes from the Carib word kenu, meaning dugout. Pesse canoes were being constructed in what is present day Netherlands during the Stone Age; and dugouts with paddles have been dated to 5,300 BCE in Denmark.

Historically, canoes were dugouts, or consisted of birch bark laid across a wood frame. Indigenous North Americans built canoes that typically were 14 feet long and weighed an estimated 50 pounds. These amazingly light craft were capable of carrying a large amount of cargo, then could be portaged, or carried, around rapids, waterfalls, and terrain between two waterways. Once early European explorers arrived during the sixteenth century, they soon learned the value of this versatile form of transportation. In fact, the canoe played a significant role in the travels of Lewis and Clark, the Hudson’s Bay Company, and many others.

With the passage of time, canoes were constructed by fastening a waterproof canvas to a wood frame. Still later, aluminum and stitch-and-glue canoes appeared on the scene. Stitch and glue consisted of plywood panels stitched together with copper wire, then glued with an epoxy resin.

Most contemporary canoes are designed to carry one or two people, plus goods for picnicking, camping, fishing, or hunting.

How popular are canoes? The Outdoor Foundation reports that there are 10 million participants in The beautiful Ranger Canoe. canoeing, or approximately three percent of this country’s population, each year. According to a Statista report, there were 492,420 registered canoes and kayaks in the U.S. during 2017. This total represented a nearly 10 percent increase compared to the previous year.

Geographically, the East North Central, South Atlantic, and Middle Atlantic census regions provide more than half of all U.S. canoeists. However, New England is tied for first place in the proportion of residents who participate in this activity.

What do we know about canoeists? The Outdoor Foundation tells us the U.S. average is seven days of participation each year, with the largest proportion (31 percent) canoeing two to three times. In terms of demographics, 34 percent are ages 25 to 44, while 26 percent are 45 years or older. The vast majority (82 percent) of canoeists are Caucasian; 57 percent are males; nearly onehalf of all canoeing households made more than $75,000 last year; and nearly two-thirds have completed at least some college.

A few years back, I was invited to participate in a canoeing event with Plymouth State University Geography Club students.

Not ever having been inside a canoe, I had no idea what to expect.

I soon learned that participation would consist of carrying our canoe down an embankment of the Pemigewasset River, where we would ease it into the water. This proved to be an unpleasant sur-

prise, as the aluminum beast weighed approximately 70 pounds.

Fortunately, my partner for the day was a considerably larger man, more experienced in the art of being a canoeist.

I learned several lessons that day. First, traveling by canoe is a delightful way to experience New Hampshire’s waterways—as long as one is careful, accidents such as tipping and swamping are easily avoided in most conditions. Second, I learned that the best way to travel in tandem is for the heavier person to sit in the stern of the canoe. It is particularly helpful if this individual is skilled in using his paddle to steer the craft. The third thing I realized is that there would be no further canoeing occasions unless I could find one that is lighter in weight. This is when I was told about Ranger Canoe.

The Ranger Canoe is a true Lakes Region product. The company was founded in 1964 by Jim Gilman, a native of the Bay State.

Gilman had been responsible for manufacturing the original space helmets used by NASA. In 1972, Gilman introduced the Challenger American Canoe Association (ACA) racing line. Ultimately, production was moved to its present location in Ashland, New Hampshire. Gilman kept the company until 1980, when he sold it to the present owner, Michael O’Hara.

O’Hara’s involvement with canoes actually began during his youth. A native of Athol, Massachusetts, O’Hara spent his summers on Lake Sunapee. While still living in Massachusetts, O’Hara began competing in a popular local Athol event, the Orange River Rat Race. The canoeing bug had bitten him. While O’Hara was matriculating at Plymouth State College during the mid to late 1970s, he learned that the company’s ACA race boats had earned three of the top five places in the national championships of 1976. Throughout his college years, O’Hara became eminently familiar with the lightweight Ranger Canoe while assisting Gilman at his shop on Tenney Mountain Highway. Upon graduation from Plymouth State,

O’Hara took over ownership of Ranger Canoe.

In order to understand what makes the Ranger Canoe a superior watercraft, I interviewed O’Hara. For four decades, O’Hara has been building the Otter 16 by hand. As such, he is a holdout from a bygone era. Decades ago, there were perhaps two dozen small canoe building operations in New England. Today, fewer than a handful remain. To this day, O’Hara works primarily by himself, producing 50 to 60 canoes per year, in two colors—dark green and burgundy.

What makes a Ranger Canoe Otter 16 such a desirable product? The answer is simple: quality and weight. Unlike the heavy clunker I dragged and pushed into the Pemi several years ago, O’Hara’s canoes weigh between 51 and 52 pounds. I didn’t need help understanding the growing popularity of lightweight canoes.

Like this columnist, a substantial number of canoeists are Baby Boomers whose days of extended weightlifting are far in the rearview mirror. So, if you’re determined to save money by shopping for a bargain basement canoe, be prepared to lug that hunk of aluminum, plastic, or fiberglass. For yours truly, there is only one choice. Quality canoes like the Otter 16 can be carried easily, are capable of moving quickly and with agility in the water, and have the strength to withstand day-to-day abuse.

To achieve the greatest strength while adding the least weight to each 16-foot craft, O’Hara builds his canoes of Kevlar, a remarkably strong space-age synthetic fiber. Each canoe is reinforced with Soric aerospace infusion core material. Next, he applies a gel skin coat, then adds ash rails and contoured cane seats.

O’Hara notes that his canoes are priced very favorably, considering the combination of high quality and low weight they offer.

In order to purchase a lighter weight canoe, O’Hara told me, the cost would be nearly twice that of a Ranger Canoe.

Ranger Canoe’s Otter 16 can be purchased through nine specialty retailers in five northeastern states; however, they are offered at a discount directly from Ranger Canoe. Please be advised that there is a caveat. Ranger Canoe is a one-man operation . . . O’Hara builds the Otter 16s all by himself. He doesn’t employ a second set of hands nor an onsite sales person. Therefore, canoeists are advised not to simply show up in Ashland prepared to discuss or view O’Hara’s canoes. Everything comes to a standstill when this happens, proving costly to the business’s bottom line.

O’Hara also advises that his canoe works is not a child-friendly place; there are materials lying around that don’t constitute suitable playground space.
