Up Against A Wall:

The Statue of Niobe and the Great Wall of Sandwich

By Leigh Sharps An extraordinary landmark adorns the edge of Little Pond Road in Sandwich. It’s a remarkable wall made of shoulder-high square stones running nearly a mile with the focal point being a seven-foot high statue of the mythological goddess, Niobe, standing on an 18-foot pedestal.

How did this come to be in the lovely country town lying on the very southern edge of the White Mountain National Forest and bordering the shore of Big Squam Lake? It is a tale with all the elements of a great book: an air of mystery, intrigue, controversy and revenge but with a happy ending involving discovery and restoration.

Sandwich is a historical town named after England’s Fourth Earl of Sandwich, John Montague (and, yes, the term ‘sandwich’ originated from his preference for eating meat between two slices of bread). The town, chartered in 1763, proved to be mostly inaccessible farmland so the acreage was enlarged, making it one of the largest townships in the state (and remains) with 94 square miles of land (56,628 acres) 3.2 percent being waterfront.

With all its quiet pastoral beauty, winding roadways through some of the most beautiful fields, hills, and charming historic mansions in the Lakes Region, and unrivaled mountain and lake views, it is little wonder the Great Wall and Niobe are home to

It is believed Isaac Adams, a politician, and inventor born in Rochester, NH, purchased the statue, (it is also believed he bought statues of Apollo and Diana at the same time) during one of his trips abroad at the London Industrial Exposition in 1862.

The Prussian master sculptor, Moritz Geiss, is thought to have cast the statue (modeled from another Niobe statuary in an Italian gallery) from zinc and painted it white to resemble marble.

The paint over zinc made the surface actually more lustrous than marble.

casting method which became popular in the late 19th century. Other historical documents say Adams commissioned the statue by a sculptor in the states.

Either way, it was something to behold sitting in central NH. The statue of Diana was also on a pedestal on the south side of the Adams’ property where the pedestal remains, but she does not. Sold at auction, her current whereabouts are unknown. The fate of Apollo is also unknown.

The story of how it came to be in its current location is a little more complicated. Several documented histories (see bibliography) say Adams

grew up in Sandwich and became a printing apprentice. Thinking he would make better headway in this profession, he decided to go to Boston. No one in the town would lend him the fare to get there, however, and this is how the ‘revenge’ part of the story comes about. In the city, along with Everett James Ellis, he invented the Adams Power (steam) Printing Press, which revolutionized the printing industry and became the most widely used book-bindery process of the era.

Having made his fortune, Adams returned to Sandwich in 1861. He purchased many area farms, razing them and using some parts to build his own manse (Adams Hall) and the stone foundations to begin constructing the wall. He ended up quarrying more rock from his own property to finish the wall. It took 100 well-paid laborers, and two expert masons nearly two years to complete the wall (1874-75).

It’s thought he did all this as an ‘act of vengeance’ to his neighbors who had refused his request for fare years earlier. The wall also has hydraulic features. Parts of it actually collected water and directed it into underground pipes feeding downhill wells. Surface water inside the wall was channeled into underground pipes releasing water outside the wall.

Why that particular mythological figure? According to Edith Hamilton’s ‘Greek Mythology’ Niobe was the daughter of Tantulus married to Amphion, a son of Zeus. He and his brother Zethus built a lofty wall around Thebes to fortify the city he and Niobe ruled. Though Zethus was the physically stronger brother, Amphion, a musician, made such entrancing music from his lyre the stones moved themselves and followed him to the wall. Niobe, rich, powerful and born of nobility, vainly expected her subjects to worship her. She had seven sons and seven daughters, all of great beauty. But such vanity, undue pride and selfishness on Niobe’s part was not tolerated in ‘heaven’ so Apollo and Diana arrived in Thebes and killed all 14 children with their arrows. Niobe watched this and fell to her knees much like stone. Therefore, she actually was turned to stone by the gods and made to forever after weep perpetual tears of sorrow day and night.

Adams may have thought this figure who defied the gods represented the town folks who had rejected him and believed it a proper form of remembrance to residents. He died in Sandwich in 1883 at age 85. The site gained popularity as a tourist attraction, called ‘Image Hill’, and this continued until the statue toppled in 1941 during a hurricane.

Faulty installation was also feared to be part of the disastrous incident which

smashed it into nearly 200 shards, some large and some no larger than a silver dollar. Its fate was unknown until retired attorney Boone Porter purchased Adams Hall. After a yearslong search, the statue pieces were discovered in 2005 in an old horse shed. Porter decided to restore Niobe and began a search for someone to do so.

In 2010 a new neighbor to Porter, Adam Nudd-Hoymeyer, an aspiring blacksmith, introduced himself to Porter. On a tour of the barn, NuddHoymeyer saw the pieces and learned of the restoration plan. He put in a bid to do the project and began putting the puzzle pieces together during the summer of 2011. It was necessary for him to re-shape some of the metal pieces and also create new ones to fill empty spaces. He consulted with Smithsonian Museum Conservation Institute expert, Carol Grissom.

He finished just prior to the town’s 250th anniversary in 2012 where Porter unveiled the statue to the public.

Porter said of Nudd-Homeyer on the Sandwich Historical website: “I don’t care how famous or skilled they are who could’ve done a better job. I just don’t believe there’s such a person!�

So ends the tale of mythological tragedy with a touch of vengeance, romance, beauty, discovery, restoration, and reverence!

He specializes in restoring and reproducing metalwork and wrought iron and cast metal items. He also builds Tappan Chairs, a craft which historically began in Sandwich by Abraham Tappan.

He employs 19th century machinery and tools of Tappans, continuing a tradition started in 1819.

Embroidering a Life

Jennifer was drawn to the beautiful colors of the embroidery floss (thread), which comes in many, many hues. With access to WGBH (public television) as a child, she happened to see a program featuring Erica Wilson, dubbed the “Julia Child of Needlework.” Wilson was showing how to do embroidery on the program and Jennifer was immediately enthralled. She bought an Erica Wilson kit and taught herself to embroider from a Wilson pamphlet. “I was quite motivated and if you want to do something, you find a way to figure it out,” Jennifer says when asked if it was difficult to learn the various embroidery stitches, especially as a seven-year-old child.

Jennifer lived with her family in southern Massachusetts, and while in high school, studied fashion design.

Later, she studied at the California College of Arts and Crafts, and also modeled and was immersed in the fashion industry for a number of years.

Because she was around fabrics and great clothing, it was inevitable she eventually saw clothing embellished with embroidery. But all the work was done by machine versus handembroidered.

Jennifer knew she wanted to draw her own designs onto fabric ranging from jackets to shirts and other garments and items, and then hand embroider the pieces. She started drawing and embroidering clothing in middle school • Embroidering continued on page 6

“Embroidery is basically coloring with embroidery floss. You can draw something on fabric and then create beautiful designs with embroidery,” she explains.

After moving to New Hampshire in 1989, Jennifer and her family were busy renovating an old farmhouse. She is an avid gardener as well as keeping horses and maintaining the farm. She does farm work each morning, and then spends her afternoons and evenings embroidering. “I am passionate about it; if I don’t get to embroider every day, I am quite miserable,” Jennifer laughs.

“I get up early and tend to the horses, and then I can get to my embroidery

projects.”

The dedication has paid off and she has had a lot of success, doing commissions for many years and now, designing and embroidering whatever project she wishes. “I use seven types of stitches and it isn’t terribly difficult to learn to do the stitches. But you have to be willing to practice to learn to embroider. In just one hour, I have taught a student to successfully do three stitches.”

While many people have felt a certain amount of cabin fever being forced inside during the pandemic, Jennifer has been able to carry on and get a lot of embroidery done. Each piece can take up to 700 hours of embroidery, and Jennifer gets lost in the process, happily working on a piece each and every day.

I am embroidering,” she explains.

“I can’t watch a television show or a movie with subtitles because my eyes are on the embroidery. But I stream a lot of television for background. To sit and embroider in absolute quiet would be difficult.”

Lest one imagine embroidery is just a fun pastime for Jennifer, that assumption would be incorrect. She is a skilled fabric artist who sells her work at the Artistic Roots gallery on the Main Street in Plymouth, NH. She is an active member (and vice-president) of Artistic Roots and helps out a lot at the co-op gallery, where there are 40 artists displaying and selling their work. (She also was the co-founder of the Ashland Village Artisan Gallery in 2000.)

While she can embroider on just about anything, Jennifer enjoys embroidering designs on demin. She does not plan out a design ahead of time, but rather studies the jacket or other garment, getting a feeling for the article of clothing. Then, with a permanent marker, she begins to draw right on the fabric. “The idea for the design just sort of comes out of me

as I am drawing it on the fabric,” she explains. “It is a fun process; as I am drawing, my heart beats faster and I feel the creative excitement. The drawing part is quick, and even if I make a mistake, it isn’t a problem because the embroidery will eventually cover it up.

As I embroider, I might add more to a design. The fabric, whether it is a shirt or other garment, is the blank canvas.”

Jennifer explains that her embroidery style is distinct and unique to her; she loves a tapestry effect to her work and is drawn to the colors of Moroccan and Mexican needle arts. “I just love folk art in general,” she adds. It seems these styles have always appealed and Jennifer explains that as a child, she visited her aunt in Maine. The aunt had a lot of very large tapestries in her home and Jennifer spent hours staring at the pieces, marveling at the designs and colors.

She is also drawn to English tapestries of the 16th and 17th centuries.

These styles have all come together to influence Jennifer’s art to this day.

September Events at Canterbury Shaker Village The annual Artisan Market at Canterbury Shaker Village is coming up on Saturday, September 12 from 10 am-5 pm. The event is a celebration of artisanal, handcrafted work, with live music, and demonstrations. Come admire artisans’ work and find unique gifts or something special for yourself.

The event will be a safe, sociallydistanced market, with masks required.

Special Village masks, handmade by the Canterbury Sewers, will also be available for purchase. All booths will be spaced 10 feet apart, and extra care will be taken to provide a safe and fun experience for everyone.

Tickets for the Artisan Market can be purchased at www.shakers.org or inperson at the event. Admission is $12 for adults, $6 for Village members, and all youth and young adults under age 25 are admitted free of charge.

Concerts on the Green continues Sunday, September 13 from 4-5 pm on the lawn surrounding the Meeting House, featuring the Wholly Rollers, a bluegrass band from Concord, NH. The concert is free, with a suggested donation of $10 per person. Masks are required and social distancing will be in place. All are welcome to attend.

On Friday, September 25 at 8 pm, Canterbury Shaker Village is hosting

Outdoor Movie Night in partnership with Red River Theatres. The movie this month is Casablanca, the 1942 classic, and will be shown outside on the lawn surrounding the meeting house, with masks and social distancing required.

All she needs is her embroidery hoop, fabric, floss, an embroidery needle and a good light source. “Doing this work…nothing makes me happier,” she reflects.

Although Jennifer has taught embroidery classes in the past, she is not doing so presently. Before COVID changed everything for so many people, she was working to prepare pieces for a show at a London gallery. The show has been postponed (due to the pandemic), but some of those embroidered works will be on display and for sale at Artistic Roots in Plymouth, NH. For those who wish to try embroidery, which Jennifer says is a lot of fun and a great way to embellish an article of clothing as she began to do in the

The future is a place of beauty for Jennifer, who plans to keep making new designs and embroidering many hours every day. “I am just enjoying the process,” she concludes, embroidering a life of beauty and creativity.

Live Theatre Returns to the Lakes Region When the COVID-19 pandemic abruptly shut down operations at the Winnipesaukee Playhouse in March, it was anyone’s guess when live performances would return to the Meredith campus. Initially the administrative team was hopeful to postpone spring shows for a few weeks and then resume. Plans for the summer season were still underway. Of course, all that changed quickly and spring and summer seasons were regrettably postponed indefinitely.

Now, using the guidelines set out by the State of New Hampshire’s Reopening Task Force, the Playhouse is excited to announce a small season of three professional productions in September and October.

The first two productions of the season will take place at the Playhouse’s outdoor amphitheater, which was constructed along with the Playhouse’s main stage in 2013 but has been underutilized in the past few years. Producing Artistic Director, Neil Pankhurst says, “In our first few years in Meredith, the outdoor stage was used frequently for our summer camp but when we moved our camp off-campus we didn’t have as much use for it. Though this isn’t the season we initially planned, in some ways it’s nice to have an excuse to give the outdoor stage a new lease on life. The technical team is currently hard at work extending the stage and building

The two productions that will take place outdoors are Or, by Liz Duffy Adams and The Mountaintop by Katori Hall. Or, was always scheduled to be in the 2020 season. It will now take place from September 2-6 and September 9-12. The three-person comedy easily lent itself to an outdoor performance “Brand Name Family Footwear for Less”

and having two of the three actors, Nicholas Wilder and Rebecca Tucker, as an off-stage couple (they met at the Playhouse in 2014 and, in non-COVID times, would have been married at the Playhouse this summer) made onstage interactions easier. The third performer, Haley Jones, is quarantined with Wilder and Tucker. All Playhouse cast and staff undergo multiple COVID tests and are strictly regulated to avoid any activity considered high risk.

The Mountaintop is a new addition to the season and is scheduled for September 16-20 and September 2326. In this Olivier Award-winning play, author Katori Hall imagines what may have taken place in Room 306 of the Lorraine Motel in Memphis, TN on the eve of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s assassination in 1968. Pankhurst says, “In most years, we choose our

show titles well in advance to give plenty of time to plan and advertise them. That does not give us much flexibility to react to current events with our programming. Of course, 2020 is the year when all of that got turned on its head. Suddenly flexibility is the key word and the ever-evolving nature of this year gave us the ability to add in programming to allow us to explore what’s on this nation’s mind.

Obviously the murder of George Floyd and the Black Lives Matter movement is a topic that people are interested in exploring and we are grateful we are able to add a production that speaks to that.”

The final show of the season, which will take place on the Playhouse’s indoor mainstage on September 30-October 3 and October 7-10, will be a new play called No Wake by Erica Berman. Set in Moultonboro on the shores of Lake Winnipesaukee, the play explores the burgeoning friendship between a cynical local teenager and an irascible snowbird with a penchant for screaming at the jet skiers who disrupt his treasured loons. Pankhurst says, “I loved the local connection to this show.

On top of that, it was practically written for social distancing! The setting is two neighbors’ porches and 99 percent of the play involves them talking to each other from their own porch! That alone seems to sum up summer 2020 on Lake Winnipesaukee!”

All three productions will follow or exceed the CDC and State of New Hampshire guidelines for social distancing, mask wearing, and other pandemic precautions.

Labor Day Grilling best way to cook socially.

By Chef Kelly Ross Today, I want to start with a summer Labor Day weekend is the official staple off the grill that most cook in a end of summer. It is coming right up, simple and basic way. Simple is great but I have never considered it an end of the season, but rather my favorite part but when there are dozens of options on how to prepare a food, I say let’s of summer. Much of my thinking is give it a try. That food is corn on the completely due to spending 80+ hours cob and I want to share some fun a week in the restaurant business; thoughts that will not only get the kids those hours sometimes went up after Labor Day due to losing much of our excited, but also all the adults as well.

It’s not rocket science to know that help with kids going back to school.

To me, summer ends when foliage butter, salt and pepper are the norm, and some of the best options are small starts. To each their own though.

So ultimately, Happy Labor Day variations on that. I am a huge fan of weekend! rolled like a log in the diameter of about a quarter in plastic film, and frozen, or refrigerated. Compound butters are a staple in old-school, upper scale five-star restaurants and generally used over high end cuts of beef. I have a few compound butters at all times in my refrigerator, but I use them now as much for corn as anything else, and they do not disappoint. I often spend a day in the kitchen making a slew of compound butters as they are always in demand in my house when cooking and grilling. One of the best aspects of cooking is prepping in advance so the “day-of” is much easier. The funny thing is, when it comes to making them for corn on the cob, I have started reforming my compound butters in the shape of a stick of butter as so many don’t know how to butter their corn unless rolling it on a stick. So, I’ll share a few “herbacious” compound butter ideas, as well as a few other ideas for corn, and then maybe a couple of other fun Labor Day Recipes.

Fresh Basil Butter Corn 8 ears of corn Olive oil 1 ½ tbsp sea salt, separated 2 sticks butter, room temp 1 cup fresh basil leaves

Let me preface this recipe by saying, and this goes for the next few compound butters, that you can make it as a butter for the future, or, just for this day of grilling corn. If compound, as I said, do so with a room temp butter, blend with herbs, spatula onto a sheet of plastic wrap, form into a quarter diameter log, and roll up, or do so in the shape of a stick of butter. Once finished, freeze or refrigerate. If that’s not what you want to do, here you go. Put the butter in a food processor with the basil and 1 tbsp salt. Let it rip until the butter is smooth.

Using a rubber spatula, scrape onto a dish so you can use for the corn. As for the corn, turn the grill onto a medium high. Husk the corn. Put the olive oil and remaining salt on a sheet pan and roll the corn in it. Grill the corn for 7-8 minutes, rolling as needed to give the corn some great char all over. Spread with the basil butter and dig in. Wicked good!

Roll the husked corn in olive oil and salt and grill over a medium high heat and lather with the butter, whether done traditionally rolled and wrapped or just in a bowl.

Mexican Corn with Cilantro Chili Butter This one is my favorite of the compound butter recipes, mainly because it has a few extra ingredients that totally push it over theVINYL edge for OF me, plus it has my favorite fresh herb out there - cilantro. This butter works great on grilled chicken breasts as well.

Like almost all compound butters, the recipe is meant to give you much more than you will need today.

8 large ears of corn, husked 1 cup Parmesan cheese 3 sticks of butter ¼ cup fresh squeezed lime juice 4 cloves garlic, minced 4 tsp ground cumin 2 tsp favorite hot sauce 1 tsp sea salt 1 tsp fresh grind black pepper 1 cup fresh chopped cilantro I always reform my compound butters, but this is one that I will melt down a small amount while grilling and using a pastry brush. Although you can roll in olive oil and salt like the last

2 recipes, for this one, I like to brush the butter on right away. Between the butter and the Parmesan cheese, these will help char the corn, plus give it some incredible flavor. Cook and roll for 8 minutes or so, brushing frequently. Once off the grill, lather up nice and thick and you will bite into what you may find the most delicious corn you have ever had.

Another of my favorite herb/spice is horseradish. This corn recipe is similar but different, and another kick butt delicious treat from Mother Nature.

These ears are wrapped in foil with a bunch of great ingredients so the flavors actually work their way right into the cobs with no way to escape, except into your mouth. You can prep this well in advance of your holiday grilling party and everyone will be all WRAPPED COMPOSITE over these.

Buttery Horseradish on The Cob 1 ¼ cup butter at room temp ½ cup shredded pepper jack cheese 3/8 cup prepared horseradish sauce 2 tbsp dried parsley flakes 4 tsp salt 4 tsp balsamic vinegar 1 tsp fresh grind black pepper ½ tsp dried thyme 12 medium ears of corn, husked In a bowl, thoroughly combine all ingredients except the corn. Rip 8 sheets of aluminum foil. Place an ear of corn on each piece of foil and with a small rubber spatula, spread the flavored butter all over the ear of corn and wrap each ear tightly. Grill the corn on a medium heat on a covered grill, rolling occasionally, for 15-20 minutes. Carefully unwrap the foil as

steam will likely escape and steam burns can be very painful. Let cool a minute or 2, dig in and enjoy.

As much as I love all of the corn recipes, I wouldn’t feel right if I didn’t share a great burger recipe and maybe a dessert before ending today. This burger comes with its own barbecue sauce that is far from the norm, and yes, as usual I share a sauce recipe that can used in multiple ways. The sauce is a little time consuming, but can easily be made in advance. This is a hearty burger and the sauce will be popular with your guests. This recipe is for 4 burgers. When making the sauce, feel free to at least double it up for the future since it does take a while to prepare. Also, it holds well for a couple of months under refrigeration.

Cheeseburger with a Peanut Chipotle DECKING BBQ Sauce 1 tbsp vegetable oil, plus more for brushing 1 onion, chopped fine 2 tbsp peeled fresh ginger, minced 2 garlic cloves, minced

Transfer the sauce to a blender and add the peanut butter and puree until smooth. Season with salt and pepper and your barbecue sauce is done. Form the meat into four 6-oz patties, ideally about 1-inch-thick each. Season both

sides with salt and pepper and brush them with oil. Preheat the grill to medium high, brush and oil the grill well, and put the burgers down on the grill. Grill about 5 minutes on each side, brushing sauce on them as they grill on both sides and cook until medium/ rare. Brush heavily with the sauce, top with the cheese, add the scallions and close the lid. Butter both inner sides of the rolls and grill them as well. Once the rolls are done, brush both of the inside halves with the sauce, plop on the burger, add lettuce and tomato and drizzle a little more sauce over the

vegetables if preferred, top the burger and squish it down somewhat and you will love these big time.

Let’s finish today’s recipes with a great dessert. This is easy, it pays tribute a little bit for the autumn season, although I’m in no need to rush things, believe me. These work well warm or cold, and have 2 of the alltime flavors that, when used together, are a perfect marriage. This dessert is a pan of Caramel Apple Bars that can give you 30 small bars, although you have the freedom to cut them any way you choose.

Caramel Apple Bars 1 ½ cups flour 1 ½ cups old fashioned oats 1 cup brown sugar ž tsp baking soda 1 tsp salt 6 tbsp butter, melted then cooled 1 egg 1 tsp vanilla extract 3 cups peeled, cored, and chopped apples, such as Granny Smith 16 oz caramel candies, unwrapped 1/3 cup heavy cream Preheat the oven to 350 degrees.

In a large bowl, mix the flour, oats, brown sugar, baking soda, and salt until well combined. Mix in the butter, egg and vanilla until thoroughly blended. Spread 2/3 of this mixture into the bottom of the dish to form an even crust layer throughout using your fingers to press the mixture into the dish, or use a fork if easier for you. Put the rest of the crust mix aside and cook the crust for 12-14 minutes or until slightly puffed. While baking, combine apples, caramels and heavy cream into a sauce pan over a low heat and stir until the caramel starts to smoothen out and the apples are slightly soft.

Pour the mixture over the cooked crust in the dish. Sprinkle the remaining crust mixture in pieces and bake for an additional 15-20 minutes at 350 degrees until the edges are slightly browned.

Cool and cut into bars of yumminess!

This dessert is scrumptious with vanilla ice cream over the top with nuts and maybe sprinkled with apple pie seasoning or cinnamon.

NH Outside with Emma Fall Vegetable Gardening Tips for the Home Gardener in New Hampshire

By August it may seem that the vegetable garden is winding down.

Many of the early season crops like spinach, lettuce and peas are long gone, leaving just warm season vegetables such as tomatoes and squash. As summer begins to draw to a close, gardeners may be looking at putting their garden to bed until next year.

However, from late July through August is actually a great time to sow many vegetables for a fall harvest. In some ways, it is easier than growing in the spring because there is less annual weed pressure, and many pest insects have already completed their lifecycles.

Deciding Which Vegetables to Grow The best vegetables to grow in the fall are those that mature quickly and prefer cooler weather. This includes the majority of the cool season vegetables, or in other words, the vegetables that have some frost tolerance. Deciding which plants to grow in your fall vegetable garden requires a few considerations. First, it is important to establish when you expect the first freeze (32℉ or less) to occur.

Those with garden journals may have kept this sort of data for their garden over a number of years. If you haven’t paid attention to or recorded frost dates in your area, you can rely instead on generalities for NH regions.

In central and southern NH, the first freeze usually comes in early to midOctober, and in mid-to-late-September in northern parts. Of course, this is just based on averages. The date of the first freeze varies from year to year, and even between relatively close locations,

based on factors such as elevation.

Once you’ve established when you think the first hard freeze will occur, then it’s time to decide what you’ll grow. Start by looking at the days to maturity on seed packets to see if crops will have enough time to mature before a hard frost. Keep in mind that many crops can be picked a little young, such as spinach, lettuce, carrots, beets and turnips.

Others, like radishes and broccoli, are much better if they can be allowed to fully develop. Look for varieties that have the fewest days to maturity, as these will likely yield the best harvest.

Remember that days to maturity are just estimates and are based on the time it takes from germination to harvest, not on when seeds are planted.

Other vegetables may be able to stand up to hard frost, such as beets, kale, collards, radishes and bunching onions. Having a general idea of the cold tolerance of a crop is helpful for planning both what and when to plant.

Starting Fall Vegetables Most fall vegetable crops can be directly sown in the garden or started indoors and transplanted into the garden. Seeding outdoors when the weather is hot can sometimes be problematic because cool season vegetables germinate best at lower temperatures. One way to get around this is to shade and water the soil before you sow. Placing shade cloth over the area you intend to plant is a great way of reducing the temperature and improving germination.

Additionally, it is very important to pay attention to watering. Seed beds will dry out much faster in late summer than they do in the spring, and it may be necessary to water multiple times throughout the day to keep the top inch of soil evenly moist until the seeds germinate and the young seedlings become established. In many ways, starting seeds indoors and moving transplants into the garden is much easier and more reliable. It also allows you to grow crops in the fall that have more days to reach

maturity.

Extending the Growing Season Those who want to extend their gardens into the fall may need to consider protecting their plants from hard frost. Many fall vegetables do fine through mild (minimum 28℉) or brief frosts, but hard freezes can cause some damage. Covering plants with row covers or anything else breathable such as towels, blankets or sheets, can help keep them alive longer. By covering plants, radiant heat from the ground is trapped, preventing them from freezing. Just make sure to remove coverings in the morning as soon as the

temperature is above freezing to avoid cooking the foliage.

A trick for keeping crops growing longer is to apply a thick layer of mulch over the soil around them. Mulch helps moderate the soil temperature by providing a layer of insulation. It keeps the soil cooler in the heat of the summer and warmer in the fall as the days and nights begin to get colder. Mulch also helps conserve soil moisture, especially while the temperature is still hot.

Planting a Cover Crop If keeping the vegetable garden going into the fall feels like too much work, another great thing you can do is

plant a cover crop. Cover crops can be a huge benefit to the garden by reducing erosion, keeping weeds in check, and adding organic matter to the soil. Oats, winter rye and tillage radish are all excellent choices for home gardens.

Oats germinate quickly and die over the winter, making them a good fit for no-till gardens and raised beds. Winter rye is nice for garden beds that you will plant in late spring with warm season vegetables (like tomatoes, peppers and cucumbers.) because it will survive the winter and begin growing again in the spring. However, it will need to be manually turned under or tilled before planting. If your garden soil is compacted, tillage radishes are perhaps the best cover crop because they grow deep roots that break up the soil and are winter-killed.

Though late summer is often the time we start to think about putting the garden to bed, many cool season vegetable crops are perfect for extending the season and keeping fresh vegetables on the table.

Back to School in Days of Old

By Kathi Caldwell-Hopper As children all over the country think about returning to school, whether through at-home or on-site learning, this time of year has always meant preparing for back to school.

Many historians and novelists have written about one-room, small-town schoolhouses and the little buildings have played a part in beloved books such as “Anne of Green Gables” and “Little Women.”

Old schoolhouses - usually consisting of just one room - were part of the American landscape for decades. Some older people in their 80s might recall attending a one-room schoolhouse.

These charming little buildings were every town’s homage to education and local children from age 5 to 15 or more all sat in one room, taught by a single adult woman or man.

Conditions in these schools were on a par with the rest of society’s housing at the time: A woodstove heated the space and students often split and carried wood to feed the heat source; a bucket of water served as refreshment and another served as a method for washing hands. Outside, usually hidden behind bushes or trees, sat the outhouse.

The Lakes Region had its share of one-room schoolhouses and a few remain today as part of museums and historical societies.

In Sandwich, New Hampshire, the Lower Corner School was a place of learning in the mid and late 1800s. It must be remembered that most towns were of themselves remote spots and many families lived in even deeper rural areas. Small schools were built to serve children in various rural locations.

The Lower Corner School began in 1825 as the John Quincy Adams School. At that time, district citizens in Sandwich voted a tax of $193.70 to build a schoolhouse. A former student, Henry Holmes, wrote of attending the school in the 1840s. He said the school was about 25 feet square with a plank door, tiny windows that were placed high and underpinnings of pasture stone. A big fireplace heated the building; wood for heating the room was from a huge pile of trees. Fourfoot logs of wood fed the fire that kept teacher and students warm during the cold New England winters. Fireplaces are notorious for providing uneven heat and this one, as the former student

recalled, provided heat that burned the face while the back was freezing.

Students who sat at the back of the room took turns moving to the front to get warm during the day, but still it was very cold.

In the 1880s the school was renamed the Lower Corner School. In the late 1930s an addition brought an indoor toilet and storage facilities to the school and a playground was added soon after. In the 1940s Ruth Vittum was the teacher; she had a classroom of about 15 students. By 1944 the school closed and the students traveled to the Center School in town.

The Village School in Moultonboro was the site of learning in the town for many years. During the early part of the 1900s, the school was located opposite the Moultonboro Town House and operated as a one-room school.

By 1913 the town was focusing on improving the school, possibly because the population was growing. By 1922 an assistant teacher was hired and the school was divided and two regular teachers were also hired. A jacketed stove was secured for the school and a note in town reports for 1923 stated, “The new stove makes it possible to

have the rooms comfortable as far as the heat is concerned.”

By September of 1925 a new school had been built and housed elementary school aged children. In her book, “I Remember Moultonboro New Hampshire” author Frances A. Stevens recalled being a student at the school in the late 1920s. “As I remember, when this school was first built there was a big stove with a jacket around it in the back corner of the room. Ethel Smith was the teacher in the room for grades one through four. In the winter when it was real cold she would have us gather around the stove for our classes. It wasn’t long before they put in a furnace with steam radiators.”

There was no electricity for some time and drinking water was hauled from the nearby home of a local doctor.

Conditions were crude, compared to what we think of school being today.

The teacher, in the 1920s, still rode horseback to school in the spring when the roads were deep with mud.

In 1779 the town raised money to hire a teacher and for some years after, money was voted for schooling. At this time there were no school houses in the town and it was the practice to hire school masters who traveled from town to town boarding with different families.

These men would teach the children of the area to read, write and spell.

By the 1800s schools were built in New Durham. In the late 1800s, improvements were made with the installation of blackboards, iron stoves and desks.

At excellent preserved one room schoolhouse is the Pleasant Valley School is part of the Wolfeboro Historical Society on South Main Street in Wolfeboro. The school was built about 1805 on land in South Wolfeboro in the area known as Pleasant Valley.

It was called District #3 School, and some residents called it the Townsend School, because it was close to the home of Reverend Isaac Townsend, Wolfeboro’s first minister. (It can be assumed the reverend visited the school and probably taught religious classes to the children.)

The school was crude, as were most in New England. Local children learned to make do. They went to nearby farmhouses to use bathroom facilities and drinking water was carried from a

neighbor’s home.

Furnishings included a teacher’s desk in the center of the room. All grades were taught in the one room.

The number of students attending ranged from 20 to 50 pupils. Later, the schoolhouse was moved to its present location at the Clark Museum Complex. For more information, visit www.wolfeborhistoricalsociety.org.

In another part of the Lakes Region, a local boy made good but did not forget his hometown. Before Alfred Quimby died in 1918, Sandwich, NH probably wasn’t far from his mind. As a very wealthy man and quite an entrepreneur in his day, Quimby likely had his affairs in order. A native of Sandwich - he was born in the town in the 1830s - Quimby was educated in area schools, but left to find work elsewhere when he was just 17 years of age.

Quimby likely realized there were better prospects and more work in a city vs. a small town such as Sandwich.

Over time, he worked in a shoe shop, and eventually a bookstore. Finally, he worked in a news and stationary store in Manchester. Eventually, he bought the store. He prospered, and after selling the store, he went into stocks and bonds. A savvy businessman, Quimby was successful at the time of his death in 1918.

Quimby never forgot the little town nestled between the Lakes Region and the White Mountains where he grew up. He made visits for the town’s Old Home Day and to visit friends and

relatives.

Quimby must have held the village dear, because when he died he remembered Sandwich in a very big way. After leaving some money to relatives and friends, he bequeathed a large sum to the town. His will stated that three trustees in the town were to oversee the legacy and “... to advance the interest and contribute to the permanent upbringing and wellbeing of said town of Sandwich and its inhabitants and institutions ...”

After a study was conducted to determine what the town might most be in need of, it was determined that a better school would be helpful in keeping young people in Sandwich, instead of seeing them leave for jobs in the cities.

In 1923, the Quimby School was born, and it was a place with high standards, where all were expected to

work hard. It was also a place where students rolled up their sleeves, got to work and gave back much to the community, reflecting the work ethics of Mr. Quimby.

The Quimby School, which operated in Sandwich from the early 1920s until 1963, taught students by books, but also in the tried-and-true method of learning by doing.

Perhaps because Alfred Quimby was practical enough to realize students needed to be trained in math, English and other scholastics, and also to learn a trade, the new school focused on these areas. It must have been exciting for local children to have their own high school where their education could continue.

At the same time as the birth of the Quimby School, the NH Commissioner of Education, Ernest W. Butterfield, wanted to see more teaching of agriculture for rural children. He envisioned a new type of school adapted to the rural area. Butterfield approved wholeheartedly of the Quimby School because it focused on not just “book learning” but also the practical side of education: teaching crafts and vocations so graduating high school students could earn a living.

The school’s first classes were held in the Sandwich town hall. The school bought the Lewis Garland property in 1929 and more property soon after; now they had space for girls to learn housekeeping and cooking in a real home atmosphere with an actual kitchen. Boys were able to learn about farming and livestock and how to grow produce.

Outdoor activities were also the focus, with all boys expected to play ball on the school premises after lunch each day.

It didn’t take long for Quimby school students to make a mark in the community. They were busy with educational classes and vocational pursuits. With gardening, canning and cooking, students produced all sorts of vegetables and fruits. (The Quimby School became known locally for its homemade tomato juice.)

Equality for work had not come to the country in the early 1900s and it likely was not a priority in Sandwich at the time. Boys were taught ironwork, woodworking, furniture making and repair, plumbing, electrical work and even how to install telephones. All the education in vocational subjects would help ensure jobs when the boys graduated from high school.

Girls were taught childcare, nutrition and “kitchen mechanics” as well as sewing, cooking and textiles. At a time when the Great Depression was sweeping the country, Quimby School students were assured of a hot meal every day. There was always something

at lunchtime because the girls were given the assignment of cooking a hot dish to add to the student’s cold lunches brought from home.

The female students were taught to cook elegant meals and more than once they prepared and served delicious meals for dignitaries who were visiting the Sandwich area.

In place of more standard physical education, but in keeping with the creative focus of the school, dancing - in particular square dancing - was taught, as well as other types of dance.

The nearby Sandwich Home Industries was seeing success in the town as well. Women in the area got a financial boost by selling their handmade items from baskets to quilts to hooked rugs and other creations at the Industry shop in Sandwich. Likely, many of the school students had parents who were making and selling things at the Industry shop. Thus, it made sense for the Quimby School to sell homemade items, in particular the honey they produced which was sold via the Industry.

The school played a huge part in the rural life of the town. Students wrote stories in local newspapers and they even had a school publication titled the Seekon. It was so well written that the school received prizes, according to “Sketches of Sandwich, NH.” The core classes went far beyond reading, writing and arithmetic. Quimby School educators taught conversational French, English and history classes saw students researching the town’s past. Their writing and research helped the local historical society and in 1932 their study of Sandwich’s vacation industry was a historical gem because

it showed the town as it was before a devastating fire in 1934.

Rural NH towns were light on entertainment in those days. Movie theatres and concerts were distantly located and not easily accessible. If Sandwich families were lucky, they owned a radio to get news and other programs. Therefore, the entertainment brought to Sandwich by Quimby School students was welcomed eagerly.

Their best entertainment was in the form of an orchestra, which formed at Quimby School in 1927. Students were encouraged to participate and they practiced diligently after school each week. They performed locally and were well received.

Students of the school were a visible part of the community. They helped after the fire in 1934, cleaning up and cooking for displaced families. Male students lent their strength to help move furniture to be stored until homes could be rebuilt.

During World War II, entire families were educated in all sorts of subjects at the school. While sons and daughters attended day classes, in the evenings adults were taught food preservation and agriculture and poultry.

As the area grew and changed, so did the need for bigger schools. In the early 1960s, the Quimby School closed its door. The large school building was purchased and became a weaving business.

Ernest Thompson Narrates 14th Annual Boathouse Tour Expressing a love for Maine’s Belgrade Lakes that began in childhood, Oscarwinning screenwriter, playwright, director, actor and songwriter, Ernest Thompson, will narrate the New Hampshire Boat Museum’s first virtual Boathouse Tour.

“Mr. Thompson lives in New Hampshire and cherishes our lakes, which is why we approached him with our project,” said Martha Cummings, executive director of the New Hampshire Boat Museum (NHBM), which is located in Wolfeboro, NH. Noting that he agreed to be the face and voice of the online event, as well as share his music for it, Cummings said Thompson’s obvious passion for the subject matter has enhanced the project. “His involvement helps us capture the wonder and excitement you can have when exploring our beautiful lakes,” she said.

Cummings added that Thompson

spoke at great length regarding his fascination for boathouses, some of which he described as “luxurious castles” and others “woebegone and run-down.”

It is this curiosity, she said, that has helped to explain the popularity behind NHBM’s annual Boathouse Tour, which is in its 14th year and presented

by Lake Life Realty. “These boathouses are curiosities to all of us,” Cummings commented. “We all wonder what they contain, how old they are, and who built them.”

She said Thompson even acknowledged that his play, “On Golden Pond”, was reminiscent of people and places he remembered from his childhood on the Belgrade Lakes. “He really is the right person to narrate this online event, because he understands and experiences the wonder and beauty of our lakes and boathouses,” Cummings added.

This year’s Boathouse Tour is also unique, as it leaves Lake Winnipesaukee for the first time.

“We’ll take people to Squam Lake and Lake Waukewan, too, as well as to an antique car collection,” she said.

“This is something we could never do in our traditional, in-person format.”

In addition to Thompson as narrator, the online event will feature Live Free or Die, his new song co-written with local legend, Art Harriman, and sung by television star and fellow NH resident, John Davidson.

“We are thrilled to have all three involved in this online event,” said Cummings. “We also want to thank the generosity of the boathouse owners, many of whom talk about their boathouses on film, too.” She also expressed gratitude for the support of Lake Life Realty, the tour and online event’s presenting sponsor. “Their contribution helped make this virtual

tour and online experience possible,” she said. “I cannot thank them enough, as this entire project reflects the very essence of our mission.”

Noting the online event will be viewable on NHBM’s website in late summer (date TBD), Cummings said they will ask for donations from people as they participate in it.

“We are working out the final details on sharing this virtual event, which provides an exclusive glimpse into the life and culture of New Hampshire’s lakes,” Cummings said.

A Lake Trail, Antiques and Ice Cream

Already, in late August, there are traces of foliage on select trees. While I adore autumn, it’s a bit too early to get excited about that season. Instead, I want to savor the last days of summer and what better place to do so than on or around one of the lakes in the area?

Luckily for me, I found myself in the Newfound Lake area on a recent Thursday afternoon to run an errand.

As has been the case all summer, the weekend traffic was getting heavy as I drove from the Laconia area to Rt. 104 and on to Bristol.

I grew up in Bristol and have watched the town grow over the years; I was happy to see the downtown area looking really pretty on the sunny August day. There are a variety of shops in the town these days and the medians are colorful with flowers, the project of townspeople who have worked hard to beautify the public spaces.

I would have loved to saunter the streets and browse a few shops, but I had my errand to run in the nearby village of Hebron and did not want to be late. Driving from Bristol on Rt. 3/ Mayhew Turnpike, I looked forward to

near the Big Catch (Restaurant), I feel I have come home.

Driving on, I traveled the busy road until I came to a left-hand turn/ North Shore Road leading to Hebron village. The winding road took me past the Grey Rocks Conservation Area with some great walking trails on and around the lake. I had been to the spot in the spring when COVID first made an appearance and no one knew for sure how safe it was to venture from our homes. I wanted to get out of the house one weekend, and my husband and I decided we would see what sort of day trip adventure could be had by simply getting in the car and driving around the Lakes Region. We happened to pass Grey Rocks and I

took a quick walk on the trail to stretch my legs. Now that people have a better idea of how to safely maneuver the pandemic, I noticed there were cars in the parking lot, which indicates others were enjoying a walk on the trail.

In Hebron village, I met a colleague and completed my errand and decided to drive on just a bit to check out the Sculptured Rocks Natural Area. I love the spot, and I visit as often as possible when I am in the Newfound region.

What is Sculptured Rocks, you might ask? It is pretty much what its name says: rocks that appear to have been sculpted into incredible formations over the passing of many, many years.

Owned and operated by the NH State Parks, there is parking directly across the road in a lot. (The park is located at 251 Sculptured Rocks Road in Groton.)

Use caution when crossing the road.

At the park, the Cockermouth River flows over and around the rocks.

According to www.nhstateparks.org, “Sculptured Rocks Natural Area, which spans 272 acres, is a unique example of nature’s powerful yet delicate artistry.

The Cockermouth River carved a narrow canyon in bedrock on its way to Newfound Lake, beginning as the last ice age drew to a close. Nature used grains of sand suspended in the current to carve the walls of the canyon into curious shapes and create potholes in the bedrock.”

The main attraction is the chance to see the amazing rock formations. I like to view the rocks from the bridge that spans the river but one can walk the property to get closer. However, caution is strongly urged in the area.

Also be courteous and aware that Sculptured Rocks is a Carry-In/CarryOut park.

After my visit to Sculptured Rocks, I headed back through Hebron village on North Shore Road. On impulse, as I approached the Paradise Point Nature Center and Wildlife Sanctuary (signs indicate the entrance), I decided to visit. Sometimes when you live or spend a lot of time in an area, you just don’t seem to get to places that have been there for years. For me, that was the case with Paradise Point. I had always wanted to visit but had not done so.

I turned into the entrance to the property and parked in the lot. A big kiosk told me there are trails in the woods and more paths that skirt Newfound Lake. I took a brief walk on the road leading to the nature center.

The center is closed this summer due to the pandemic, but by calling ahead, visitors can still rent kayaks, canoes and stand-up paddle boards at the area (call ahead to make sure rentals are still available as autumn approaches).

The Newfound Audubon Center is comprised of three wildlife sanctuaries: The Paradise Point Nature Center, Ash Cottage at Hebron Marsh Sanctuary and the Bear Mountain Sanctuary.

According to www.nhaudubon.org, “Paradise Point Nature Center and Wildlife Sanctuary, located on the north shore of Newfound Lake, includes 43 acres with 3,500 feet of rocky, unspoiled lakeshore. In the early 1960s, Colonel and Mrs. Alcott Elwell gave the property to the New Hampshire Charitable Fund, who donated it to the Audubon Society of New Hampshire in 1966. Through a challenge grant from the New Hampshire Charitable Fund, contributors, and volunteers, Paradise Point Nature Center was constructed in 1969 to offer environmental education services to people of all ages. Newfound Lake is a glacial lake that is noted for its depth, clarity, and purity. A deep river valley before

The debris dammed that water to form a very deep lake – even deeper than it is now – and presently it reaches a depth of 180 feet. Evidence of the glaciers can be seen throughout the Sanctuary. The Sanctuary’s varied habitats entice many neo-tropical bird migrants each spring and summer.

Many Warblers, Thrushes, Vireos, and Scarlet Tanagers have been found here.

The marked trails at the Sanctuary are open year-round from dawn to dusk.”

I decided to follow signs for the Lakeside Trail, which was about a one-mile walk. If visiting, please wear sturdy shoes because some areas of the paths are on a bit of an incline and there are tree roots here and there, so watch your footing. It was a wonderful, brief walk that took me to a dock area where visitors can rent kayaks and other water craft in season I stepped onto the dock and was amazed at the great view of a small house on a mini island and more views of the shoreline. I like to do watercolors and sketches on my treks in the summer and always have a few art supplies in my car, so I decided to come back to the dock for some quick sketching after my walk. Past the lake portion of the trail, I entered a wooded area where it was cool and quiet. Soon, I was back near the parking lot area.

With sketch pad and pencil in hand, I walked back to the dock area where I spent a half hour or so enjoying the warm, sunny spot and sketching the lake views.

I really enjoyed the visit to Paradise Point and plan to return, perhaps next time to rent a kayak or canoe in order to paddle around the Newfound Lake area.

Back on the Mayhew Turnpike, I saw a sign for ice cream and antiques.

“Two of my favorite things,” I said to myself as I decided to stop at IdleA-While Antiques and Ice Cream located at 1177 Mayhew Turnpike in Bridgewater.

The shop/building has been around for as long as I can remember, in later years being a great antiques shop. The ice cream window area at one side of the building was fairly new to me, and I noticed a variety of flavors available.

I placed my order and was impressed to see the many steps the staff has taken

for extra sanitizing due to COVID. I sat on an outside bench and enjoyed my ice cream while taking in the view and watching a beautiful sailboat gliding over the water.

I just love antiques and knew I had to browse the shop. I entered a really delightful group shop where owner Anne Bryan was working behind the counter.

In the large space, there were many great items, and I was enthralled to see a lot of old wooden signs, many advertising lake area places. The shop is a treasure trove with a variety of antiques from postcards of days gone by to furniture, paintings, china and much, much more.

I stopped to chat with Anne, who told me, “I bought the shop five years ago.

In the past it had been a grocery store, and also a marina with a gas dock. It dates back to the 1910 era. This is a group shop with 18 dealers. We will be open through Columbus Day and the ice cream may be open after Labor Day, but call ahead for updates at 603744-8010.”

As I headed back to the Laconia area, I reflected that this was just the sort of day-trip I love: no great agenda, some impulse stops to explore new things and a chance to be near the water. And ice cream and antiques, among my favorite things!

As summer slips away, I feel quite fortunate to revisit my hometown and to enjoy, once again, lovely Newfound Lake.

“Woods, Water, and Wildlife Explorers Club” Moose Mountains Regional Greenways (MMRG) and Branch Hill Farm (BHF) in Milton Mills have joined to present a self-guided outdoor activity program for families called the Woods, Water & Wildlife Explorers Club. With a passport for families to track their progress and earn prizes, the free self-scheduled activities will provide an opportunity for kids and their families to have fun outside together while learning about the natural world.

‘Woods, Water & Wildlife’ sums up the themes of the interactive Explorers Club events. The ‘Woods’ category offers ‘Learn Your Leaves,’ with leaf photos of local tree species to help you identify trees at Casey Road Conservation Land or in your own

backyard. Two Club activities feature water themes.

‘Family Fishing Fun’ invites families to try fishing at a local farm pond, while ‘Waterside Exploration’ suggests ideas for getting wet and exploring a stream or pond close to home. The ‘Wildlife’ category includes ‘Rainy Day Adventures’ with virtual presentations by Squam Lakes Natural Science Center and ‘Birds, Blooms and Bugs,’ which encourages children to write a poem, paint a picture, or take a photograph with a nature theme.

Several activities promote fun while learning about all three W’s, such as Seasons of Change at Branch Hill Farm which takes families on a selfguided walk through BHF’s fields and forest and down to the river.

MMRG Educational Outreach Coordinator Kari Lygren is organizing the ‘Seasons of Change’ walk. She explained, “Families will receive a map to follow with 18 different stops. Each stop corresponds to a post installed at the farm with a sign showing fun questions to answer or suggestions of what to look for. When I tried out the whole activity, the pond stop was my favorite. It was fun to see so much life there: birds were active, there was an animal track leading down to the water, fish were jumping and bullfrogs croaking! I really like the wild apple trees too; we saw a flock of turkeys near the trees at the back of the field.”
