An Autumn Squam Lake Pontoon Boat Cruise By Mark Okrant Photos courtesy Squam Lakes Natural Science Center More than 10 million out-ofstate visitors can’t be wrong . . . New Hampshire is a treasure-trove of fabulous natural and cultural attractions. While the majority flock to the most popular destinations, there are hundreds of additional places from which to choose. Having lived in New Hampshire for more than 40 years, one of my favorites is Squam Lake. Situated immediately northwest of Lake Winnipesaukee, Squam’s 6,791 acres qualify it as the second largest body of fresh water contained entirely within the state. Recently, I had the opportunity to view Squam in a new way, as a passenger aboard one of the Squam Lakes Natural Science Center’s (SLNSC) lake cruises. Taking exit 24 from I-93, I followed Route 3 south to Route 113/ Holderness for about 10 minutes. At the Science Center, I was greeted by the Center’s Marketing and Visitor Services Manager, Amanda Gillen. Amanda directed us to the Center’s dock, where a canopied pontoon boat, The Loon, awaited. Within moments, we (my wife and I) were introduced to the captain for the day, Tom Thomas, an affable retiree who has spent the last five years familiarizing passengers with this gem of a water body. Two themes became apparent before the bulbous silver pontoons were fully wet. Throughout the delightful

90-minute experience, we were to learn about the glacial origins of the lake and its surroundings, and how the highly acclaimed 1981 film, On Golden Pond, influenced preservation of the shoreline. Leaving the dock, Captain Tom briefly took us past the site where Norman had gassed up his boat in On Golden Pond. After turning around in neighboring Little Squam Lake, we headed back along the Squam River and entered Big Squam, where our informative tour began in earnest. Passing by Colton Cove, one of 20 coves in Squam Lake, we learned that this was the first area along the lake’s shoreline to be developed.

RELAX

Tom instructed us to note several characteristics of the older houses, which he would compare with newer developments later. Those first homes were built within inches of the water’s edge; many had boathouses that hovered over the lake itself. Neighboring houses on Colton Cove were close enough to one another to hit with a child’s peashooter. Tom’s presentation addressed the aftermath of having an internationally acclaimed movie set in what was largely an undeveloped, environmentally sensitive area. Within weeks of the appearance of On Golden Pond in theaters, the five communities surrounding the lake were met with

demands to accommodate residential and other forms of development. Acting quickly, and in concert with one another, plus the state government, strict restrictions were passed. As we cruised along, those quick actions were in sharp evidence. While structures pre-dating the film were grandfathered, newer units were required to be constructed a minimum of 50 feet back from the shoreline. No clear cutting of property was to be allowed, nor were boathouses. As an additional way to conform with surroundings, all new structures were painted in earth tones . . . no orange or chartreuse houses. While the pontoon boat powered along, we learned about the formation of Squam Lake and its surroundings. The last continental glacier had moved forward, then retreated 13,000 to 15,000 years ago, scouring out the region’s lakes and rounding the surrounding mountains during the process. Squam Lake consists of 18 separate basins, divided from one another by granite ridges called reefs. These reefs extend from the lake floor to within two-tothree feet below the water’s surface. Therefore, a keen awareness of the locations of those rocky hazards is essential for safe boating on the lake. As we looked into the distance, it was explained that there are three sets of mountains within the lake’s 44,000acre watershed: The Squam Range, • Squam Continued on page 5

September 23, 2019 | THE LAKER | Page 5 • Squam Continued from page 3 the Ossipee Range, and the Sandwich Range. To illustrate the continental glacier’s thickness, Tom pointed to nearby Red Hill, the tallest point of elevation in the Squam Range, and asked us to imagine that the ice was three times the height of that impressive rock sentinel. Moving along, we learned that there are 30 named islands in Squam Lake. Passing Potato Island, we observed that there was an impressive house hidden beneath a canopy of trees. Owing to its location close to the shore, Potato is one of four islands served by electricity from the surrounding community. I think each of us imagined making a real estate transaction as soon as we returned to the dock. At this juncture, The Loon was nearly an hour into our cruise. While no one commented, we all knew that something important was missing from our checklist of expectations. We had viewed cormorants, with their sleek black bodies and giraffe-like necks. There was an abundance of gulls and great blue herons, and we passed nesting sites that had been abandoned

quickly shut off the engine and we simply drifted along, getting no closer than 50 yards away. Obviously, those gorgeous birds were the real reason a bunch of strangers spent a beautiful mid-day aboard a pontoon boat on Squam Lake. In this case, reality exceeded all expectations. As we were returning to the Science Center’s dock, the leaves of the Tupolo trees were beginning to show red. As you read this, other people are traveling to Squam Lake to view all of this natural beauty and discriminating shoreline development, but with a wonderful addition. Very soon, the shoreline will be awash in their seasonal hues. Visitors will be greeted with a broad brush of beautiful colors while being serenaded by the haunting call of loons. So, what’s keeping you from joining them? Each year, more than 9,000 people experience a Squam Lakes Natural Science Center cruise aboard a pontoon boat. Tickets may be purchased at www.naturenh.org. The fee for adults is $27; seniors pay $25, while the cost for children is $23. Also, tickets for the Center’s Live Animal Exhibit Trail can be purchased at that website.

way up on the sides of surrounding hills . . . remnants of former farms, and logging operations . . . long since converted to condominiums and private estates. Soon we were passing the shoreline where RockywoldDeephaven Camp occupies a peninsula that affords beautiful views of Squam. Another peninsula, Five Finger Point came into view. This one, managed by the Squam Lakes Association, provides naturalists and students with a place to study the local environment. As we reached Kimball Island, whose Purgatory Cove was the setting for a momentous boat crash scene in On Golden Pond, we spotted nearly a dozen kayakers, all patiently paddling along. Kayakers love Squam, as it is devoid of the large speedboats whose owners prefer the open water of Lake Winnipesaukee. The kayakers seemed to be looking at something in the distance . . . that’s when we saw them. First there were two . . . then three . . . then six Common Loons. Using binoculars supplied by our captain, we watched as the loons, with their black heads, spotted white backs, and cranberry eyes, formed a single group—a process called rafting. Tom

Tuftonboro Library Adjusting Hours During Construction in the current building to proceed uninterrupted for two consecutive days per week. Opening at 10 am will allow construction crews four uninterrupted morning hours for the remaining three weekdays. Both of these changes will help keep the overall building project on schedule and on budget without unduly restricting patrons’ access to the library. The trustees anticipate that expanded weekend hours will compensate for the Tuesday closure and the later opening time during the rest of the week. In

addition to all regular onsite library services and resources, weekend patrons will find a selection of drop-in craft projects available on Saturdays, and morning coffee plus a range of local

and national newspapers on Sundays. Online resources will continue to be accessible 24/7, as usual. For further information, call Christie Sarles at 603-569-4256.

by bald eagles. As we traveled, Tom informed us about the abundance of fish—rainbow trout, landlocked salmon, lake trout, whitefish, small and largemouth bass, pickerel, horned pout, and white perch—that occupy the lake. All of these support an abundance of wildlife and attract recreation anglers. So, where was that one waterfowl we all had come to see? Passing Livermore Cove, named for a signer of the Declaration of Independence, we learned that this is a loon preservation area, wherein one pair of adults and two chicks will consume six hundred pounds of fish during their season on the lake. Loons live on Squam Lake from late March until November or early December. Since loons can’t fish once the lake ices over, they spend winters in the Gulf of Maine. Each of us anxiously wondered where they were hiding on this particular beautiful early September day? Passing Chocorua Island, known locally as Church Island, we learned that church services and weddings had been conducted on this small, wooded isle since early during the last century. Continuing on, we saw houses situated

Cruising Through the Corn Field: Amazing Maze Moulton Farm’s Annual Corn Maze Features M/S Mount Washington If you think riding the iconic M/S Mount Washington is fun, try exploring a corn maze patterned on the famed ship. The lake was still frozen and the M/S Washington was wintering in Center Harbor when the team at Moulton Farm started planning their annual corn maze. John Moulton, owner of Moulton Farm in Meredith, recalls a few ideas for this year’s theme were discussed, but then the idea of celebrating the Mount Washington came up. “Wes Thomas, who takes on our annual maze as part of his

for a minute or two and then got this big grin on his face,” explains Moulton. “You could almost see him picturing the possibilities of how he could use the ship’s features and the name to get people completely turned around and disorientated in the maze.” “When John asked me if I’d mind having the Mount Washington featured in the maze, I didn’t have to even think about it,” says Jim Morash, the captain, chief operating officer, and owner of the ship. “I absolutely said yes. Both the farm and the ‘Mount’ have been key attractions in the Lakes Region for years. I’ve known John for a long time and really enjoy and respect what he and his team do there. Over the years, our ship has been portrayed on many things, but I’m pretty sure this is the

first time it has been the subject of a corn maze!” Morash isn’t sure how he’ll do navigating through the maze. “I’ve been navigating on Lake Winnipesaukee for years, but getting through the farm’s maze? When all you can see is sky and the corn towering over you? Oh, I’ll get lost for sure!” he says with a laugh. Moulton Farm’s corn maze opened for the season on September 20. It will be open seven days a week starting at 8 am with the last admission one hour before the farm closes. Admission costs $7 per person with a special $5 rate for each child between 6 years and 3 years of age. Children under 3 years old are free. In addition to the corn maze and the farm’s “pick your own” pumpkin patch, there are more reasons to visit the farm, including the Cider Bellies Doughnut stand, pies and whoopie pies and other items from the farm’s kitchen and bakery, and special events happening at the farm. More information is available at www.moultonfarm.com. Moulton Farm is located at 18 Quarry Road off Route 25 in Meredith and is open seven days a week. The farm practices sustainable agriculture and is dedicated to providing the highest quality fruits and vegetables while preserving its rich soil for future generations.

Lakes Region Art Assoc. Gallery to Host Picturesque Event Get out your Sharpie and circle September 27 on the calendar as the last day to see the outstanding “Floating Garden” created by featured artist of the month, Pat Edsall, at her closing reception at the Lakes Region Art Association Gallery in Tilton, NH. Pat’s unique exhibit is a series of watercolor hand painted flowers suspended (floating) inside a gazebo representing the beauty found inside the human mind. The purpose of the ‘garden’ is to bring awareness of, and to help find a cure for Alzheimer’s. The closing reception for the exhibit will include wine and cheese, and for anyone attending who donates to the Alzheimer’s Association, Pat will ‘cut-

down’ one of her painted flowers and give it to them in appreciation of their support. For those who can’t attend, Pat encourages people to drop off a check donating to ALZ at the gallery or use the link: http://act.alz.org/goto/ dancersmakeadifference. Concurrent with Pat’s “Floating Garden” exhibit, is her watercolor and ink artwork titled “Out of The Blue”, showing her creative use of just the color blue. In addition to Pat’s closing exhibits, there’s one more final, fun and exciting event taking place. LRAA member Duane Hammond created a community involved art project titled, “Paint a Square”. The finished artwork will be unveiled at the ‘Great Reveal’ at HOLDERNESS OFFICE 603-968-7615 PLYMOUTH OFFICE 603-238-6990

Purchased in 2004, this former church was converted to one of the area’s premiere summer theater venues. Renovated to include 2 bathrooms, central air conditioning, a 400 amp electrical service, an updated septic system and a drilled well, this property, with 158 feet of water frontage on the Squam Channel between Big Squam and Little Squam, has a wide array of potential uses.

7 pm during the reception. The ‘Paint a Square’ contest was open to member LRAA artists and the general public. A beautiful photograph of a flower garden was donated by LRAA member Nancy Rand for use as the subject and the photo was divided into 24 6”x6” squares. Participants created a replica from the original photo of their square in any medium they chose, whether watercolor, oil, computer art, photo, pastel, colored or graphite pencil, beads, etc. Hammond has put all the 6”x6” squares back together creating a final finished ‘painting’. The public is

invited to vote for their favorite square, and the artist who receives the largest number of votes wins the ‘painting’. The closing exhibit for all three events is free to the public from 5 to 8 pm. The Lakes Region Art Association Gallery, representing artwork displayed by over 35 member artists, is located at the Tanger Outlet Mall, Suite 132 at 120 Laconia Road in Tilton, NH. The gallery is open Thursday through Sunday from 10 am to 6 pm. Interested artists may apply for membership at the gallery.

In partnership with “Top Dog” sponsor, Gunstock Mountain Resort, NHHS is hosting the “Ruff” and Radical 5K and Trail Race, a 1980s-themed run/walk on Saturday, September 28 at Gunstock in Gilford, New Hampshire. Runners and walkers are encouraged to bring their dogs, and to dress in their 80s finest! All participants will receive a race t-shirt, and the first 120 registrants will also receive tube socks and a headband. Participants also get a chairlift ride to the top of the mountain. “We are going to have a totally tubular time as we celebrate the unforgettable decade (1980s) and the ongoing need to support animals in need of food, care, shelter and a forever home. Come be bodacious and show us your gnarly best for a good cause,” invites

Brooke Pearsall, NHHS director of development. Registration is now open for the races. The “Ruff” and Radical 5K begins at 9:30 am and the Trail Race begins at 10 am (or after you finish the 5K). Participants can walk or run in both races. The cost is $30 for one race; for those who want to participate in both, the discounted cost is $35. Sign-in will begin at 8 am on race day. The deadline to register is Friday, September 27. In addition to Gunstock Mountain Resort, Tito’s Vodka is also a sponsor, and will be on site after the race with signature cocktails for runners 21 and older. Local band, Axis, will also be on site performing an all-80s concert! DJs from race sponsors 104.9 the Hawk and 101.5 WEEI Sports Radio will be broadcasting live from the event. For more information, or to learn about sponsorship opportunities, call Brooke Pearsall at 603-524-3252 or email brooke@nhhumane.org. To register for the race, go to raceroster. com/25355.

SLA to Host Ridge Race to Support Squam Trail Network On Sunday, September 29, the Squam Lakes Association (SLA) will host the 7th Annual Squam Ridge Race, a 12.2-mile ridge race which traverses a majority of the Squam Range crossing three summits with amazing views of Squam Lake and the surrounding watershed. All proceeds from the race will go directly to maintaining over 50 miles of SLA maintained trails around the Squam Lakes Watershed. “As visitation increases in the Squam Range every year, so does the wear and

tear on the trails,” said SLA Director of Conservation, Rebecca Hanson. The Old Bridle Path, which is famous for taking hikers up to West and East Rattlesnake, sees thousands of visitors every year and has two scenic peaks that overlook Squam Lake. Maintenance along all SLA trails from the race includes maintaining water bars to prevent erosion problems, trail reconstruction, clearing brush and downed trees, signage and upkeep in the parking areas.

Competitors in the Squam Ridge Race The race has over 3,000 feet of elevation gain and is mostly singletrack trails. Anyone is welcome to run or just hike the 12.2-mile route as a participant of the event. You may also decide to get out and enjoy the day with the four-mile race, which climbs to the top of Mount Livermore and loops back to the start / finish area. All participants will be entered into the prize drawings to be held during the event, and have access to food and beverages donated by local restaurants and businesses at the start / finish area. Handmade medals will go to the top finishers in their division and prizes to the top finishers overall. Register for the Ridge Race online at squamlakes. org. The Squam Lakes Association is also looking for volunteers to help fire up the grills, work aid stations along the ridge, be time keepers, photograph the action at the finish line, and more. There are a number of different ways volunteers can support this event, both on the trail and at the finish line. The food is great, the beverages are cold, and the energy is infectious! Join the celebration and support the trails. Special thanks go to the Webster Family, Webster Land Corp, and Burleigh Land Limited Partnership for providing access to the trails and venue

for this race. The SLA would like to thank the following lead sponsors: Rockywold-Deephaven, O’Neill Orthopedics, and Meredith Village Savings Bank, along with the dozens of generous sponsors who make this event possible. SLA is still seeking sponsors and in-kind donations for the Ridge Race raffle. If you would like to participate, please contact Development Director Angi Francesco at the SLA office. Parking (start and finish line) will take place at Burleigh Farm Road off Route 113 in Holderness. Registration/ number pick up opens at 7:30 am, and the race will start at 9 am. The event is limited to the first 200 registrants. The Squam Lakes Association is a non-profit organization established in 1904. For over 100 years the Association has been working to protect and conserve the natural beauty, peaceful character, and resources of the Squam Watershed. In collaboration with local and state partners, the SLA promotes the protection, careful use and shared enjoyment of the lakes, mountains, forests, open spaces and wildlife of the Squam Lakes region. For more information and to register or volunteer, call the SLA office at 603968-7336 or email info@squamlakes. org.

Dinosaurs Invade the Lakes Region! Did you ever think you could see or hear dinosaurs in the Lake Region of New Hampshire? This year you can, because five gigantic, animatronic dinosaurs are on display at Squam Lakes Natural Science Center in Holderness through September 30. But the truth is, dinosaurs have been here all along. Modern birds are descended from a group of twolegged dinosaurs known as theropods, a family that includes the notorious Tyrannosaurus rex as well as its smaller, more bird-like cousins, the velociraptors. If you have heard that modern birds are related to dinosaurs, this is, in fact, myth. Birds are not related to dinosaurs because birds are dinosaurs. Small size is generally a requirement for flight, and scientists suspect this adaptation evolved before other flight innovations. Other marked similarities between dinosaurs and modern birds include their breathing systems, relatively light bones, scaly feet, and reproduction through the laying of eggs. Velociraptors didn’t shrivel into little songbirds overnight, and scientists will never know exactly when and how this transformation from dinosaurs to birds occurred. Fossil evidence suggests that the evolution of birds started some 150 million years ago during the Jurassic Period and spanned millions of years. The classic features characterizing modern birds appeared one at a time, starting with bipedal locomotion, more complex feathers, wishbones, and eventually, wings. Archaeopteryx, one of the first feathered dinosaurs, is an example of a transitional fossil, or one with features suggesting an intermediate stage between theropod dinosaurs

Rte.125 RV & Marine, Inc.

and modern birds. Another feathered dinosaur, Deinonychus, used large claws to catch its prey, much like modern raptors. See the similarities for yourself at Dinosaurs Alive! on the live animal exhibit trail at the Science Center, where a handful of dinosaurs, including Tyrannosaurus rex and Deinonychus, join a selection of modern raptors, offering a glimpse into the evolutionary process. Dinosaurs Alive! is on display at Squam Lakes Natural Science Center through the end of September. The Science Center is open daily from 9:30 am to 5 pm, with the last trail admission at 3:30 pm. Learn more at nhnature.org. The mission of Squam Lakes Natural Science Center is to advance understanding of ecology by exploring New Hampshire’s natural world. Through spectacular live animal exhibits, natural science education programs, guided Squam Lake Cruises, an informal public garden, and Blue Heron School, a nature-based Montessori early learning center, the Science Center has educated and enlightened visitors since 1966 about the importance of our natural world. Squam Lakes Natural Science Center is located on Route 113 in Holderness, an easy drive from exit 24 off I-93, and public trails are open daily from May 1 through November 1 with programming throughout the year. The Science Center is accredited by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) and is the only AZA-accredited institution in all of northern New England. For further information about the Science Center, call 603-968-7194 or visit www.nhnature.org.

6:30 pm. When asked, “What would the world be without music?” Rich Araldi replied, “I don’t even want to think about it. I feel a responsibility to create music that is uplifting, encouraging, hopeful and responsible and helps us connect with the important things in our lives.” Rich will play great songs of the 20th century on the vibraphone, and he also will intersperse stories, trivia and facts to accompany the music. Peter Ferber Demonstration at The Art Place Well-known local artist Peter Ferber will be doing a painting demonstration at The Art Place in downtown Wolfeboro on Saturday, September 28 from 5 to 7:30 pm during Wolfeboro Art Walk. Spectators may observe and ask questions of the artist. Peter creates works of art that take the viewer to wondrous places, many of which surround us in the Lakes Region. Peter uses his natural and honed set of skills to create works of art that are familiar, yet unique. The demonstration is a rare opportunity to observe the artist at work on a painting in progress. He is able to capture the spirit of New England in various mediums, from watercolors, acrylics, and oils to cut paper, his latest technique. The Art Place has two shows each year to highlight new, original paintings. The next Peter Ferber show will be Saturday, February 15, 2020. The show will open at 9:30 am. For the past 25 years, Peter Ferber has

painted the official posters for the New England Chapter of the Antique and Classic Boat Society’s annual show, which also come as highly collectable artist proofs. Peter has exhibited in over 50 shows in New England and the Midwest. More than 100 reproductions of his work have been made, including over 70 limited edition prints. The painting demonstration is free of charge, and all are welcome to stop by the Art Place to watch and meet the artist. Refreshments will be served. This is the last month of the popular Wolfeboro Art Walk for this year. Other galleries participating in Wolfeboro Art Walk are The Kalled Gallery, Sandy Martin Gallery, Paper, Pen and Palette, and Winnipesaukee Pottery. Music and other entertainment as well as refreshments are part of the downtown festivities. Visit Wolfeboro Art Walk on Facebook for details. The Art Place is located at 9 North Main Street in downtown, Wolfeboro, NH. Please call 603-569-6159.
