Alyansa or Liberal? The Letran Student Council Elections 2015 BY RALPH RONALD BANIQUED

THE LIST of the official candidates for the 2015 Letran Student Council (LSC) elections has been officially released last January 26. Running for the top post are Jose Diego Dela Cruz of Aksyon Alyansa Letranista (AAL) and Dominic Padasas of Lakas Lapiang Liberal ng Letran (LLL). “Jigz” (Dela Cruz) is a junior communication student and the incumbent secretary of LSC. Currently a member of Young Southeast Asian Leaders Initiative and Dominican Network Youth Group, he was the Junior Vice President for Productions of the Letran Integrated Media Organization, A.Y. 20132014 and also the Assistant Creative Director of Knights Cable Television the same school year. He also used to be a member of the Letran band from 2012-2014. On the other side of the pole is junior financial management student, “Nonic” (Padasas). He is currently the president of the Letran Cheering Squad, and was the vice president of the same organization last school year. Also, he is a member of Junior Confederation of Finance Association Philippines and Letran Junior Financial Executives.

Platforms Jigz emphasized that the platforms of AAL for this school year are patterned to the mission and vision of Letran. “We seek for the betterment of not just [for] the student but the Letranites, faculty staff and administration [for] because, we Aksyon Alyansa Letranista believe that trust and equal academic society must be on the one point therefore our platforms are patterned with the mission and vision of the Colegio,” Jigz said, adding, “Bago kami maghain ng projects, nagdaan lahat ng projects na inisip namin from service, from our volunteers, and from random students na [we’re going to] cater projects [that] will boost the interest of the students. Hindi naman [kami] gagawa ng project na alam naming walang pupunta at hindi kami gagawa ng project na alam naming walang makikinabang.” AAL is aiming to establish #ONELetran as their platform of governance which promotes unity and camaraderie amongst Letranites and Letran community. “Development ng bawat letranista is hindi natin makukuha kung hindi tayo magme-meet in one point; yung parang pagkakaaroon ng pagkakaintindihan ang gusto naming mangyari for the next academic year,” said Jigz.

Some of their platforms are One Letran practical learning programs, One Letran Student System C-A-M, One Letran NCAA Spirit and Intramuros Consortium. On the other hand, Nonic and LLL promote the balance between Letran’s academic standard and culture, and aim to develop every Letranite, holistically. “Yun (holistic development of Letranites} yung pinakabanner platform ko. Yung maging angat yung cultural natin sa school kasi trabaho na ng mga [organizations] para mapaganda yung academics ng school natin,” Nonic said, adding, “Bakit hindi natin pagandahin yung culture ng school natin? Like extracurricular [organizations], Te m p l a r, Filipiniana na nagbibigay [ng] awards sa school natin. Bakit hindi na natin i-encourage pa sila (Letranites) para mas sumali doon at mas makilala yung school natin as part of promotion.” The platforms of LLL revolve around their core principles, which are advancing student

Advancing Student Welfare The Student Council should promote the physical, intellectual, sociocultural, and spiritual well being of every Letranite, through relevant and sustainable programs, which address their universal needs. The LSC serves as a catalyst to maximize and realize the potential of each Letranite. Protecting Students Rights The Student Council should protect and defend the rights of each student to ensure that students are given what is due to them in accordance to the unalienable rights provided by the laws of man and God. In acknowledging and ensuring that these rights are upheld, the students are thereby empowered to become achievers for God, Letran, and Country Catalyst of Social Transformation The Student Council shall engage the student body in an environment that harnesses their diverse knowledge, skill, and values towards social transformation. #TayoangSC – A look back to a year of service BY RISHA FERNANDEZ

THE DAYS are numbered and new candidates have been cast — now that elections are getting nearer, #TayoangSC is back to trend stronger. But before we go out with the old and in with the new, it’s time for The LANCE to offer a little throwback to our current set of officers. The Anfernee Ruanto-led Student Council (SC) is best known for its always up-to-date accounts so within the reach of every Letranite (You can’t be a

Letranite this year if you don’t know their tagline). Featuring the digital works of Public Relations Officer (P.R.O.) Patrick Reyes, the SC’s pages never fail to publish posts — whether it’s an advisory, something Colegiorelated, or just a sweet greeting for an occasion. They also have their stand against some issues, such as stating their support for the rights of natives through releasing an official statement. Their nod-worthy guest-

picking skills are on point too, with Silent Sanctuary having performed their sweet serenades to the crowd for Mr. & Ms. Letran 2014 and Electronic Dance Music Mavens Mars Miranda and Deuce Manila bringing something new to the table as they guested on Diversified 2014 for the yearly Paskong Arriba. Not only that, Yeng Constantino and Joyce Pring were invited to headline the event!

Yet perhaps, what their most sterling moment was the passing of ‘Wash Day Wednesday’. Bringing to fruition the students’ most heard-of request, the current SC’s first yet only resolution prescribed the blue collared Letran shirt on Wednesdays — a stark contrast to the already-abolished corporate attire and no-heels policy back in 2012.

Whom should

JOSE DIEGO DELA CRUZ PRESIDENT Q: What makes you the most qualified candidate for the position that you

Q: Other than the cliché, “I want to serve Letranites,” what are your other reasons for running that you can’t do as a normal student leader? A: Other than serving the Letranites, [siguro] yung, partly yung, power na rin kasi even though nandun yung passion ko to serve the Letranites, kung wala akong power in a way and resources to use, balewala yung passion mo e.

are seeking? A: Siguro ako yung pinaka-qualified na maging president ng LSC for the next academic year kasi ako na ‘to, na-build ng school, na-build ng co-curricular activities, na-build ng experiences, na-build ng training sa RSOs, na-build ng training sa life. Ako na ‘to, [three] years na nag-serve para sa mga students, [selflessly], and siguro yun na yung pinaka-advantage ko para maging best dun sa position na yun.

Q: What drives you to run? A: Yung need nung students to have a better and equal academic society. Q: How are you going to handle being a student and being an officer at the same time? A: [I’ve] been there for a year, I served as secretary for the Letran Student Council (LSC) and so far, I managed [to balance] academics and extra-curricular.

Secretary, Letran Student Council 2014-2015 Junior Vice President for Productions, Letran Integrated Media Organization, 2013-2014 Assistant Creative Director, Knights Cable Television, A.Y. 2013-2014 Drummer, Letran Band, 2012-2014 Member, Young Southeast Asian Leaders Initiative Member, Dominican Network Youth Group Q: Other than the cliché, “I want to serve Letranites,” what are your other reasons for running that you can’t do as a normal student leader? A: I want to know more about how SC goes, how they really represent the students – para ipaalam sa administration what they really need. Other than giving them my service, [ako], as a regular student, alam ko yung issues ko as a student so ‘pag naupo ako sa pwestong ‘to, I will know kung ano pa yung gripes ng ibang students and I want to make a move for that.

Q: All knowing that people’s eyes are on you, how are you going to deal with scrutiny?

TRINA ANNE DELA PAZ

VICE PRESIDENT Q: What makes you the most qualified candidate for the position you are seeking? A: I think, [it] is being the [external president] of our [organization], which is the Letran Tourism Society. I think, yun na yung edge. And from high school [to] college, I [want] to lead groups - External Vice President, Letran Tourism Society so parang ito na yung chance ko, opportunity to lead [the] Letranites. [Another] thing is [gusto] - Class Representative/ President, Letran Tourism Management - Member Young South East Asian Leaders Initiative ko talaga makinig sa gripes ng students, I want - President, Ang Mitra/The Crossier Staffers, 2009-2010 to listen kung ano pa yung issues pa nila and - Member, Ang Mitra/The Crossier Staffers, 2008 -2009 work for it.

ALAIN DELON FUSANA

SECRETARY - Journalism Senator, Letran Student Council 2014-2015 - Senate President Pro-Tempore, Letran Student Council 2014-2015 - Areopagus News Correspondent (Present) - CBCP News Writer (Present) - Exellance 2014 Best in Community Service (2013) - Member, Young South East Asian Leaders Initiative

Q: What is the number one thing LSC hasn’t done the past year that you want to take a lead on? A: More on sa student rights and yung gusto talaga ng estudyante.

Q: What experiences have prepared you for this position, if elected? A: Experience. Dating part ng Letran Student Council bilang Broadcasting Senator and also part of the Secretariat Committee, which connected siya sa position as Deputy Secretary and Documentation Committee na connected din; kasi Deputy Secretary is responsible for the documentation of the activities of [LSC].

PAOLO GABRIEL SANTIAGO TREASURER - Financial Management Senator, Letran Student Council 2014-2015 - Vice President for External Affairs, Letran Junior Financial Executives, 2014-2015 - First year representative, Letran Junior Financial Executives, 2013-2014 - President, Supreme Student Government (High School), 2012-2013 - Member, Young Southeast Asian Leaders Initiative

Q: How do you plan to imply projects given that you have limited resources? A: Normally [yung] budget, parating problem ‘yan pero sa amin as [an] Entrepreneurship student, na-train kami or yung inaaral namin for four years [is] how to handle budgeting. Sa budgeting kasi, hindi lang yan lalabas na parang how to allocate money. [How] to find an investment para mas mapalago pa yung pera or kung hindi man kayang palaguin, as student council, makakapag-allocate kami ng pera sa kung saan yung [mas] kailangan.

Q: How are you planning to improve the processing of papers of RSOs? Ang plano namin is magkakaroon ng league of RSOs whereas, mage-elect sila (organizations) ng officers [na] magiging counterpart; [parang] yung SC, itself, magkakaroon ng another branch which is yung sa RSO and from there on, iga-guide sila ng SC which is yung EXECOM themselves.

FRANCES XAVIERA ESPAÑOL DEPUTY SECRETARY

Q: Other than the cliché, “I want to serve Letranites,” what are your other reasons for running that you can’t do as a normal student leader? A: Making the Letran a better Colegio.

Q: What skills and strengths do you possess that are specific to carrying out the duties for the position you applied? A: Ito [yung] lagi kong nilalagay sa resume ko, [hindi] naman sa pagmamayabang, I have communication skills. I [like] to deal with people and sa mga nakakausap ko, gusto din naman nila ako nakakausap. Yun yung skills na maipagmamalaki ko.

- Broadcasting Senator ,Letran Student Council 2014-2015 - Member, Young Southeast Asian Leaders Initiative - Member, Knights Cable Television, 2012-Present - Member, Letran Integrated Media Organization, 2012-resent - Outstanding Broadcasting Freshman of the Year 2013 Q: If financial circumstances require budget cuts, what would you first eliminate from SC’s budget? Why?

JOHNWELL FORTUNO

Q: Do you think it is important for offices and organizations to disclose their financial report to students? Why or why not? A: Yes, kasi, as a candidate for Auditor, [napapa-practice] na tayo para sa real world and di naman [kasi] yung offices ng Letran yung nagsabi na gumawa ng [organizations]. Student din naman yung nag-create ng [organizations]. Katulad ko, I - Entrepreneurship Senator, Letran Student Council 2014-2015 [re-established] an organization for Entrepreneurship; and - Re-established Young Entrepreneurs’ Society of Letran (YES-L), 2014-2015 as I rebuilt that organization, I am also committed in doing - Member, Young Southeast Asian Leaders Initiative anything under that organization.

LOUIE ALPHONSE DIVINAGRACIA P.R.O.

- Member, Letran Integrated Media Organization, 2013-2014 - Member, Young Southeast Asian Leaders Initiative - Member, University of Santo Tomas Association of Civil Engineering Students (UST-ACES), 2013-2014 - Executive Assistant to the President, University of Santo Tomas Central Student Council (UST-CSC), 2012-2013 - Vice Chairman, Responsible Engineering Student Who Strive to be Perfect, Efficient and Concerned Thomasians Lakas ng Inhenyerong Tomasino (RESPECT-LIT), 2012-2013 - Member, Lakas Tomasino Coalition, 2012-2013

AUDITOR

Q: On your opinion, how will you be able to keep the student body’s cooperation and interest on your soonto-be projects? A: One of my plans would be to bring the P.R.O. service to the next level; Riel Reyes (incumbent P.R.O.) has already started what is or what defines the job of P.R.O., mainly to post quality materials via social media. On my end, I will continue [what] he [has] started and I would create roomto-room [campaigns] with [regards] to upcoming events so that students would not only be updated by social media but in that sense, we’re reaching out to students about the Letran activities.

Q: What specific initiatives and projects would you undertake to make the LSC more transparent and accessible? A: As the P.R.O. of Alyansa, one of my projects is to build the “Go Pro” – the guild of Public Relations Officers. As we all know, the class organization or the classroom organization is not well-built in Letran. So, [I’ll] try to talk to COMELEC, with regards to creating a classroom election so that there is a well-represented set of officers in every classroom. [From] there, I would build a P.R.O. Congress to be able to address to them what are the jobs of P.R.O’s, how can you be a more people-oriented people, how can you deliver the information without being boring.

we vote for?

DOMINIC PADASAS PRESIDENT

Q: How will you be able to keep the student body’s cooperation with your soon to be projects?

Other than the cliché, “I want to serve Letranites,” students natin. Yung projects na yan, what are your other reasons for running that you can’t minsan kasi hindi napapansin yan e. Gusto nila [ganto], gusto nila ganyan – ibigay natin do as a normal student leader? yun, pero in a way na, mapapansin pa tayo, hindi lang yung mga facilities, ibigay [din] naA: Nag-run ako, kasi diba normal na yun e ‘pag sumali tin yung hanap ng mga students para mas maging interested pa sila na pumasok sa atin. Q: All knowing that people’s eyes are on you, how are you going to deal with scrutiny?

Kasi I am who I am, [kasi] lahat naman yan napagdadaan, kaya kung siraan ka nila, just be yourself head [held] up high and kung siraan ka nila, pakita mo sakanila kung sino ka talaga. Kasi in the end, wala naman magbabago kung siraan ka nila. Kung nasa tama ka, nasa tama ka.

Q: What makes you the most qualified candidate for the position that you are seeking? A: I think qualified ako kasi hindi ko ihaharap sakanila yung aking credentials.

Q: What drives you to run?

Q: How are you going to handle being a student and being an officer at the same time?

Niño Student Government, 2012-2013 - Member, Filipino Liberal Youth

Q:How are you planning to improve the processing of papers of RSOs? A: I had a first-hand experience [wherein] my submitted papers were lost, so what I think that the problem there is that there is no proper handling of papers when submitted to the OSA that is why papers are lost, we need to have a point person to come to the time of submission, to limit, lessen the margin of errors.

PAULA JEAN OCAMPO

Q: Other than the cliché, “I want to serve Letranites,” what are your other reasons for running that you can’t do as a normal student leader? A: Well, aside from the cliché nga po na serving Letranites, syempre po ako mismo din po [nakaka-experience] ng irregularities sa school. So aside from them po, parang I want to voice out din po syempre yung mga [irregularities], [kaya] po ako nag-join ng SC [kasi] gusto ko mag-take part sa changes dito sa school.

Q: Other than the cliché, “I want to serve Letranites,” what are your other reasons for running that you can’t do as a normal student leader? A: As a normal student kasi hindi ko kayang..

Q: Do you think it is important for offices and organizations to disclose to the financial reports to students? Why or why not? A: Para [sa] akin, [yung] about sa financial, dapat maging transparent tayo. Dapat yung disclosure, maalis yun para - Vice President, Internal of Philippine Association of Nutrition – Psi Gamma Chapter, 2014-Present hindi nagkakaroon ng question sa mga - Member, Letran Templar Singing Ambassadors, 2014-2015 estudyante. Syempre in order for them to understand and in order for us to understand them, kailangan po [lagi] kaming may connection sa isa’t-isa po kaya as much as possible [sana] lagi po kaming may connection dun sa mga estudyante ng Letran.

SECRETARY - President, Letran Academic Achievers’ Guild, 2013- Present -Dean’s Lister, 2012-Present - Academic Excellence Awardee, Colegio de San Juan de Letran, 2014 - Member, Estribillos de los Escolares, 2013- Present - Member, Letran Engineering Society, 2012- Present - Academic Scholar, Colegio de San Juan de Letran, 2012- Present - Secretary, Cordillera Regional Science High School Sports Club, 2011-2012 - Treasurer, Cordillera Regional Science High School Science Club, 2008-2009 - Secretary, Benguet Special Education Center Pupil Government, 2007-2008 - Member, Filipino Liberal Youth

Q: What experiences have prepared you for this position, if elected? A: Siguro yung experience ko nung elementary [and] highschool kasi lagi ako nae-elect as a secretary. Ayun, naging training ko na yun.

Q: If financial circumstances require budget cuts, IRISH what would you first eliminate from SC’s budget? Why? So di naman kami after dun sa benefits kasi libre yung foods. [Siguro] yung mga magbe-benefit kami, huwag muna siguro yun. Sila muna bago kami.

CYRIL JEROME MANNING

Q: What makes you the most qualified candidate for the position you are seeking? A: So feel ko qualified ako, kasi hindi [na] yung posisyon yung iniisip ko, yung welfare na lang ng students, na parang mai-voice out ko yung gusto nila gawin [at] baguhin.

WISDOM GEN DUMPAYAN

Q: What is the number one thing LSC hasn’t done in the past year that you want to take a lead on? A: I think is the promotion of the extracurricular RSO’s because, I, as the president of the LAAG [has] no other contacts, other members aside from the scholars so it’s very hard to gather members to move forward with the mission and vision of the organization without enough members and it’s so hard to gather members without proper way advertising and limited resources. I would like the SC to back up, support these RSOs.

DEPUTY SECRETARY

Q: What skills and strengths do you possess that are specific to carrying out the duties for the position you applied?

President, Letran Cheering Squad, 2014-2015 Member, Junior Confederation of Finance Association- Philippines (2015) Member, Letran Junior Financial Executives, 2013-Present Vice-President, Letran Cheering Squad, 2013-2014 Chairman, Lakas Lapiang Liberal ng Letran, 2015-2016 Member, Filipino Liberal Youth

Q: How do you plan to imply projects given that you have limited resources? [We] gather all the resources needed and actually, it is possible kasi [example], sponsor pa lang ng isang RSO, marami na silang nakukuha. Kaya importante na we must keep in touch with other RSOs.

Q: On your opinion, how will you be able to keep the student body’s cooperation and interest on your soon-to-be projects? A: [Parang] it’s a matter of dapat lagi mo silang iniinform na, ‘Guys kailangan natin ‘tong gawin’. [Parang] kailangan po [sila] ma-motivate. Kasi [para] - Spokesperson, Lakas Lapiang Liberal ng Letran, 2015-2016 hindi [nila] makalimutan, parang [continuos] - Fourth year Batch Representative, The Nazarene Catholic School, Student Coordinating Board, 2012-2013 na paalala para po masuportahan [at] tumatak - Host, The Convergence of Culture and Behavior: Understanding Indigenization and Filipino Psychology (2015) Member, Filipino Liberal Youth sa kanila yung mga gusto natin gawin.

GABRIEL MIGUEL ESPIRITU P.R.O.

Editorial Red and yellow THE TWO most popular colors in the Colegio fly anew; and this is a very crucial moment for aspiring student leaders as they begin to fulfill their dreams – to become a part of the Letran Student Council. For the past three years, the yellow party, Lakas Lapiang Liberal ng Letran, got the highest position. On the other hand, Aksyon Alyansa Letranista, the red party, got the majority of the senatorial positions. It has been a tradition that these parties remind themselves of their rivalry every time the election period approaches. But the issue is not about which party is going to be there and make it; the issue is about who deserves to be given the chance to lead the students. In the current situation of political system in our country, the popular one gets the position. Yet popularity cannot carry the duties that a student leader has to do; capability and knowledge do. A good selection of candidaates is more probable to good governance. Focusing more on the training of the candidates makes more sense than just planning on how to get to the top. The parties may have influenced their candidates on their views and opinions, but the party, which a candidate belongs to, doesn’t define how he or she leads. For us voters, we should not think of which party to vote for, but rather, who among the candidates should we vote for. Let us not give more reasons for these parties to treat each other as rivals. We are not required to vote by block, but we are required to vote wisely. The future of these aspirants relies on our decisions; and the fate of student life in the following academic year, will rely on them. We can draw the path that we will walk with these future leaders. The path could be smooth or rough, depending on what the majority wants. Whatever the results may be, it should not be the party that we should consider as winners, but the candidates themselves, since they are expected to give the branding to their party, and not the other way around. We hope that the thinking and the tradition that “this party should top the other” would be over. After all, their colors won’t matter in the end.
