Below is a conversation between Sheihu, other participants in the circle, and Lizania Cruz (Interviewer).

My name is Sheihu Haadi. My story is similar to Abdul. But I got it easier, because, I mean, he went through those Latin countries. I was lucky; I got my Mexican visa when I was back home [in Ghana]. [Looking] back, the problem was how to fly from [my] home, [Ghana], to Mexico in order to be here, [in the US]. There is no direct flight from Ghana to Mexico, so, what I did was go to China. I had a Chin[ese] visa. I went to where I knew there [would be] a flight from Guangzhou to Mexico. When I went to China, I bought a ticket from Guangzhou to Mexico. So, my [process] was a little easier than his, even though we were aiming [for] the same country.

So, that was my route.

Mi nombre es Sheihu Haadi. Mi historia es similar a la de Abdul. Pero para mí fue más fácil, porque, es decir, él atravesó esos países latinos. Yo tuve suerte: obtuve mi visa mexicana cuando estaba en casa [en Ghana]. Mirando atrás, el problema era cómo volar desde [mi] casa, [Ghana], a México para estar aquí, [en EE. UU.]. But when I got to Mexico, the story was almost like his. You know, you have to come into the border and surrender yourself; [a]nd then you have to do a lot of documentation, [all the while] they put you somewhere, chain your legs, [your] hands— you know, like the way you see it on TV, like they do to criminals, real criminals. And then they keep you at a place for, like, a week— almost a week before they take you to the detention where you think, “Okay, detention, I will be free,” [b]ut when you get there, it’s like [being] put in a prison. It’s frustrating because, [you think], “why should I be in a prison when I haven’t committed any crime?”. But [then] compare to the situation back home, and then you hope that they’re gonna release you, and then you’ll be free, you keep on going.

Pero cuando llegué a México, la historia fue casi como la de él. Ya sabes, tienes que venir a la frontera y rendirte; entonces tienes que hacer mucha documentación, todo el tiempo te colocan en algún lugar, encadenan tus piernas, [tus] manos, ya sabes, como se ve en televisión, como lo hacen con los criminales, verdaderos criminales. Luego te mantienen en un lugar durante, como, una semana, casi una semana antes de que te lleven a la detención donde piensas: “Okey, detención, seré libre”, pero cuando llegas ahí, es como ser puesto en una prisión. Es frustrante porque piensas, “¿por qué debería estar en una prisión cuando no he cometido ningún delito?”.

Pero luego comparas con la situación en tu país, y luego esperas que te liberen, y entonces serás libre, sigues adelante.

Participant 1: They give you self-hope.

Participante 1: Te dan esperanza.

Sheihu: So, that’s what we went through. I sat in the detention for, like, uh, seven months before I got my parole. Yeah, seven months. They keep you in a room at a certain time. You aren’t allowed to be out, you know. Like the way, he said, that you [get and eat] the food. You see the way I eat.

Sheihu: Entonces, eso es por lo que pasamos. Estuve en la detención durante, como, eh, siete meses antes de obtener mi libertad condicional. Sí, siete meses. Te mantienen en una habitación a cierta hora. No puedes salir, ¿sabes? Como la forma en que él dijo que conseguía [y comía] la comida. Ves la forma en que como.

Participant 2: They just give you something. I’ll show you. I’ll show you. [pointing and motioning towards his phone] This is where they [would] put the food. [Imagine, these are] the plates. You see, this [would be the] beans. [pointing to a corner of the plate] This [would be a] kind of a bread or something. I don’t remember.

But that was your plate [pointing in one direction], that was somebody else’s plate [pointing in another direction]. But it’s the same thing. [Everyone] get’s the same food. It’s the same, yeah.

Participante 2: Simplemente te dan algo. Te mostraré. Te mostraré. [apuntando y señalando hacia su teléfono] Aquí es donde ponían la comida.

Imagínate, estos son los platos. Mira, estos son los frijoles. [apuntando a una esquina del plato] Este es un tipo de pan o algo así.

Sheihu: Those who kill are criminals, eat from this [points to one “plate”].

We, the asylum seekers, eat from that [points to another “plate”]. So, it’s kind of frustrating. “What is this?” You know. You are [eating food that you have never seen before].

Sheihu: Aquellos que matan o son criminales, comen de esto [apunta a un “plato”]. Nosotros, los solicitantes de asilo, de eso [apunta a otro “plato”].

Entonces, es un poco frustrante. “¿Qué es esto?” Ya sabes. Estás comiendo alimentos que nunca has visto antes.

Lizania: Yeah.

Lizania: Sí.

Sheihu: When I came here, I see [the food], it’s the same as dog food, you know. So, yeah, it makes you feel very, very bad as well. Look at what [a] dog is eating, and that’s what you [are] eating.

Sheihu: Cuando vine aquí, veo [la comida], es lo mismo que la comida para perros, ya sabes. Entonces, sí, te hace sentir muy, muy mal también. Mira lo que un perro está comiendo, y eso mismo es lo que tú comes.

So basically, that was [my] experience. When I got my parole, I came out; [it’s been] almost six years now. And when you come out, that’s not the end; you have to, like he said, report to immigration from time to time, you know, until you win your case. If you don’t win your case, you have to know what to do to find your legal documents [in order] for you to be here. So, it’s not that easy. But we still have hope that everything [is] gonna be okay. I mean, especially [in] this time when, you know, with #45. So, that [was] basically what I went through—what I went through before coming here.

Básicamente, esa fue mi experiencia. Cuando obtuve mi libertad condicional, salí; ya han sido casi seis años ahora. Y cuando sales, ese no es el fin; tienes que, como él dijo, reportarte a la inmigración de vez en cuando, ya sabes, hasta que ganes tu caso. Si no ganas tu caso, debes saber qué hacer para encontrar tus documentos legales en orden para que estés aquí.

Lizania: How long have you been here?

Sheihu: Uh, almost six years now. Yeah. Almost six years.

Lizania: And now that you’re here, [w]hat are some of your experiences after being here?

Sheihu: Uh, it’s a good experience apart from what we went through.

I mean, being here, it’s a blessing I should say. Actually being in the United States is a blessing apart from what we went through. I don’t even see what I went through, you know— I don’t see what I went through because what I’m seeing [is] the difference, [that] is very, very huge.

When you’re here [in the US], compared to our country, you know, financially, everything, like Ali said, you [may be] in [your] country and within 24 hours, there would be lights going off, you know. And here, you don’t see that. And financially, when you work here, the money you get if you’re working for like a week, it’s a big difference; compared to somebody working, you know, back home, they pay monthly. What you get [here] in a week mean, somebody working in a government institution doesn’t get that much. So, you know, that’s the difference.

Participant 2: There may be, like, racial challenges.

[Crosstalk] Sheihu: There are sometimes, yeah. There are some racial challenges, believe me, not even with the whites, even [amongst] the black communities…

Lizania: How so? Like, do you feel not welcome within the black community?

Sheihu: Some people. No, I work in a security company. A guy was working with me, and we [got into an argument]. And you know what he said? He said, “You don’t come from here. You’re from Africa.”

Entonces, no es tan fácil. Pero todavía tenemos la esperanza de que todo estará bien. O sea, especialmente en este tiempo, ya sabes, con 45. Entonces, eso fue básicamente lo que pasé, lo que pasé antes de venir aquí.

Lizania: ¿Cuánto tiempo llevas aquí?

Sheihu: Eh, casi seis años ahora. Sí. Casi seis años.

Lizania: Y ahora que estás aquí, ¿cuáles son algunas de tus experiencias después de estar aquí?

Sheihu: Eh, es una buena experiencia aparte de lo que pasamos. O sea, estar aquí, es una bendición, debería decir. En realidad, estar en los Estados Unidos es una bendición aparte de lo que pasamos. Ni siquiera veo lo que pasé, ya sabes, no veo lo que pasé porque lo que estoy viendo es la diferencia, y [eso] es muy, muy grande.

Cuando estás aquí [en EE. UU.], comparado con nuestro país, tú sabes, financieramente, todo, como dijo Ali, [puedes estar] en [tu] país y en 24 horas, habrá apagones, sabes. Y aquí, no ves eso. Y financieramente, cuando trabajas aquí, el dinero que recibes si trabajas como una semana, es una gran diferencia; en comparación con alguien que trabaja, sabes, en casa, donde pagan por mes. Lo que obtienes aquí en una semana, alguien que trabaja en una institución gubernamental no obtiene tanto. Entonces, sabes, esa es la diferencia.

Participante 2: Puede haber desafíos raciales.

[Diafonía] Sheihu: A veces, sí. Hay algunos desafíos raciales, créeme, ni siquiera es con los blancos, es entre las comunidades negras ...

Lizania: ¿Cómo es eso? ¿No te sientes bienvenido dentro de la comunidad negra?

Sheihu: Algunas personas. No, yo trabajo en una compañía de seguridad.

Un tipo estaba trabajando conmigo, y tuvimos una discusión. ¿Y sabes lo que dijo? Él dijo: “Tú no eres de aquí. Eres de África”.

You know. So, some of the whites,they have a racist problem, but they don’t say it like he said. You know. You’re thinking, “Lord, this is my fellow black brother...” And boom, he said that. You know, it kind of hits you more than the white person saying it to you. So, there is a racial problem that exists.

But you kind of get through it— yeah, [you] go through it Participant 1: Our race, like my brother said, about racism— we’ve experienced more racism in this country. And it’s [because] before we [are] taught America is more democratic and racist free. When we got here, we understand that, this is, I think the most racist country. Yeah. Because anytime when you are on the train, you see people showing racism. They are racist to you. Clearly, you see it. You can be sitting beside a person on the train looking at you. They don’t want to talk to you. Black, your fellow black man will talk to you like, “Hey, Africa. What are you doing here? Go to your country.”

I work downtown every day in Times Square and most of the black people say, “Hey, fucking Africa. What are you doing here? Go to your country.” And we feel so bad.

Sheihu: Like, even some of the whites [will not] show [it] like most of the blacks. They are very, very, very racist. They say, “Oh, fucking Africa came to take our job here. Go to your country.”

Participant 1: You know, racists are still in the world.

Sheihu: Sometime you feel so bad riding on the train. People, when you go on the train, people start looking at you like an animal, like we’re different.

I mean, they’re looking at you. They will be asking you, “What’s going on?”

The way I see race in [the] United States, it’s not because of the law. The law, it’s helping them, they don’t wanna, like, force [racism] out. So, they know if they do something, the law is gonna go against them. Yeah.

So, [the] United States is about law; you get to evade the law. Nobody is above the law. So, if [they] don’t follow the law, they’re still racist. It’s that people don’t like to, voice it out— say it. You can see somebody, your fellow brother, [like the same skin color as you] — when he sees you, the way [that] he looks at you, like, he knows he dislikes you. Like, you know it. It’s a fact.

He doesn’t wanna, like, admit that in public. People will know that, “Oh, he’s racist”. But [in] the way he [is] gonna treat you, you [will] definitely know.

[You’ll see] in the way he gonna talk to you. Imagine, let me put this example. When you [are] working, you have a job. You work in a company. The company could have, like, a lot of different people— white, Asian, different people. You [are] gonna see one person like this, like, you, and the way he gonna talk to you. He gonna be, like, yelling at you, even if you didn’t do nothing. He will come and say that, “Oh, you did this.” If somebody [else] did it, he will try to point at you. Why? Because he doesn’t like you. Because you know, you are not the same color [as]with him, or you are not [from] the same country [as] him. So, when you gonna say that, “Oh, you [are] racist.”

Someone is gonna say, “Oh, that’s a big word.” But you [are] feeling like it is racis[m]t, because [anytime something happens], that I didn’t do, you said I did it.

That’s why some people, you [may] feel like when they are working, they

Ya sabes. Entonces, algunos de los blancos tienen un problema racista, pero no lo dicen como él lo dijo. Sabes. Estás pensando, “Señor, este es mi hermano negro”... Y bum, él dice eso. Ya sabes, te golpea más fuerte que una persona blanca diciéndote eso. Entonces, existe un problema racial. Pero más o menos lo superas, sí, lo superas.

Participante 1: Nuestra raza, como mi hermano dijo, sobre el racismo: hemos experimentado más racismo en este país. Y es porque antes nos enseñan que Estados Unidos es más democrático y está libre de racismo. Cuando llegamos aquí, entendemos que, este es, creo que es el país más racista. Sí.

Porque cuando estás en el tren, ves personas que muestran racismo. Ellos son racistas hacia ti. Claramente, lo ves. Puedes sentarte al lado de una persona en el tren mirándote. No quieren hablar contigo. Negro, tu compañero negro te habla como “Hey, África. ¿Qué estás haciendo aquí? Vete a tu país”.

Trabajo en el centro de la ciudad todos los días en Times Square y la mayoría de la gente negra dice: “Hola, África. ¿Qué estás haciendo aquí? Ve a tu país”.

Y nos sentimos tan mal...

Sheihu: O sea, incluso algunos de los blancos no lo mostrarán como la mayoría de los negros. Son muy, muy, muy racistas. Dicen: “Oh, maldita África vino a cogernos nuestros trabajos. Ve a tu país”.

Participante 1: Sabes, los racistas todavía están en el mundo.

Sheihu: A veces te sientes tan mal montando en el tren. La gente, cuando te subes al tren, la gente te empieza a mirar como un animal, como si fuéramos diferentes. Es decir, te están mirando. Ellos te preguntan, “¿Qué está pasando?”

La forma en que veo la raza en [los] Estados Unidos, no es por la ley.

La ley, los está ayudando, ellos no quieren, como, forzar el racismo a salir.

Entonces, ellos saben que si hacen algo, la ley irá en contra de ellos. Sí.

Entonces, [los] Estados Unidos se trata de la ley; puedes evadir la ley.

Nadie está por encima de la ley. Entonces, si [ellos] no cumplen la ley, siguen siendo racistas. Es que a la gente no le gusta decirlo en voz alta. Puedes ver a alguien, a tu hermano, [como el mismo color de piel que tú], cuando te ve, la forma en que te mira, él sabe que tú no le agradas. O sea, lo sabes.

Es un hecho. Él no quiere, como, admitir eso en público. La gente sabe que, “Oh, él es racista”. Pero en la forma en que él te trata, definitivamente sabrás. Vas a ver en la forma en que él te habla. Imagina, déjame poner este ejemplo.

Cuando [estás] trabajando, tienes un trabajo. Trabajas en una compañía.

La compañía puede tener muchas personas diferentes, blancas, asiáticas, diferentes personas. Tú ves a una persona así como tú, y la forma en que él te habla. Él va a te grita, incluso si no hiciste nada. Él viene y dice: “Oh, hiciste esto”. Aún si fue alguien más que lo hizo, igual intentará señalarte a ti. ¿Por qué? Porque él no te quiere. Porque, sabes, no eres del mismo color que él, o no eres del mismo país que él. Entonces, cuando dices, “Oh, eres racista”, alguien dirá: “Oh, es una palabra fuerte”. Pero sientes que es racista, porque cada vez que algo sucede, aunque no lo hice, dice que yo lo hice.

Es por eso que algunas personas pueden sentirse incómodos cuando están

don’t feel comfortable. Most people that I know, they just wanna be self-employed because they feel, “I don’t want too much headache because I don’t want somebody to come and tell me some of this crazy stuff that I don’t wanna hear,” and stuff like that. A lot of people find racism at their job. That’s [where]what is going on. You will see the racism [from a] distance, but most people at certain jobs, like really, there’s racism. But the law is just covering it. People don’t wanna get caught, because if they find out a company is having [issues with racism], they gonna sue them— and usually they don’t want that. So, they have to do something; like even if they’re racist, they have to play some tactics [so that] people will not feel like they [are] racist.

He is gonna try and [form his words] in a certain way— you may not feel like he is being racist, because he is trying to cover that up.

He gonna try and s[ay] that, “Oh, maybe somebody did some things and pointed at…you [as] the one who did it.” And then if you agree, and say, “Oh yeah, maybe they did,”. [Imagine] you are the best employee [at] the job.

Maybe you made, uh, one mistake. Oh, then he is trying to, like, blow you up.

And he doesn’t remember what you did in the company. He [just] doesn’t like you because you [are the best] in the company, and he doesn’t feel like he want[s] his employee to be good at your position. So, that’s how I feel. So, racist, I wouldn’t be surprised,

Pero la ley solo lo encubre. La gente no quiere que la atrapen, porque si descubren que una empresa está teniendo problemas de racismo, los demandan, y no quieren eso. Entonces, tienen que hacer algo; incluso si son racistas, tienen que jugar algunas tácticas [para que] las personas no sientan que ellos son [racistas]. Él va a trata de decir sus palabras de una cierta manera; puede que no sientas que él está siendo racista, porque está tratando de encubrirlo. Él dirá que, “Oh, tal vez alguien hizo algunas cosas y te señaló a ... ti como el que lo hizo”. Y luego, si estás de acuerdo, y dices: “Oh sí, tal vez fue así”.

Imagínate, eres el mejor empleado. Tal vez cometiste un error. Oh, entonces él intenta explotarte y no recuerda lo que hiciste en la compañía. A él tú simplemente no le agradas porque eres el mejor de la empresa, y no quiere que su empleado sea bueno en tu posición. Entonces, así es como me siento.

Entonces, racista, no me sorprendería...

Mm-hmm.

Mm-hmm.

Participant 1: And the last, especially when you’re from Africa everybody under rates you. No matter your level of education, they under rate you.

Once you are from Africa you are, like, nobody.

Participant 1: Y el último, especialmente cuando eres de África, todo el mundo te subestima. No importa su nivel de educación, ellos te subestiman.

Una vez que eres de África no eres nadie.

Participant 3: And the thing is, you know, we live good. You see, the [people from] Bangladesh or India— we live good; we live good back home, better than them.

Participant 3: Y la cosa es, tú sabes, vivimos bien. Tu ves a la gente de Bangladesh o la India, vivimos bien; vivimos bien en casa, mejor que ellos.

Sheihu: I don’t know how to say it, but we really live better than them. I mean economically, you know, we [live] better than them. But here [in the US], I don’t think they face the racial problem [that] we face. I mean, just because of the their color. So, we [are] still going through [it]. That’s all what we can say.

[There] a[re] so many places that you feel [you can’t go] as an African, not because of [a] kind of race, but the way people be looking at you. In a way you [are] scared of going in there, because you know if you go there, they will be intimidated. They will say something. So, you can’t go. Like, visiting sometime in the hospital. Most of our people don’t want to go to the hospital; they can be sick, but they don’t wanna go there because they know what they are going to face there.

Participant 3: Yeah. Sometimes [at] movie, I mean, the club— most of Africans don’t wanna go there. That’s why you see Africans isolate ourselves or they are together. They can’t mingle with people, different people. The moment you start with, “Fucking African… hey, Africa…hey…”

Sheihu: So, if we are to express ourselves, we can’t express ourselves [further] because we feel [like], we scared. You see?

Sheihu: No sé cómo decirlo, pero realmente vivimos mejor que ellos. O sea, económicamente, ya sabes, nosotros vivimos mejor que ellos. Pero aquí [en Estados Unidos], no creo que ellos se enfrenten al problema racial que nosotros enfrentamos. Es decir, solo por el color. Entonces, nosotros todavía estamos atravesando esto. Eso es todo lo que podemos decir.

Hay tantos lugares donde sientes que puedes ir como africano, no por una raza, sino por la forma en que las personas te miran. De alguna manera tienes miedo de ir allí, porque sabes que si vas allí, ellos se sentirán intimidados. Ellos dirán algo. Entonces, no puedes ir. Por ejemplo, ir al hospital en algún momento. La mayoría de nuestra gente no quiere ir al hospital; pueden estar enfermos, pero no quieren ir allí porque saben a lo que van a enfrentarse.

Participante 3: Sí. A veces [en] películas, es decir, el club, la mayoría de los africanos no quieren ir allí. Es por eso que ves a los africanos aislarse o están juntos. No pueden mezclarse con personas, diferentes personas. En el momento en que empiezas, “Maldito africano... oye, África... oye...”

Sheihu: Entonces, si queremos expresarnos, no podemos expresarnos [más] porque nos sentimos como con miedo. ¿Lo ves?

Lizania: Yeah. You’re restricted.

Lizania: Sí. Estás restringido

Sheihu: Yeah. But most of the people here, we’ve been in class more than them. But [a] person [will] underrate you because you are from Africa.

Sheihu: Sí. Pero la mayoría de la gente aquí, hemos estado en clases más que ellos.

Lizania: Yeah.

Sheihu: Yeah. You see? All of us are, we’ve been in class— high school, college. Everybody has been. In Ghana, going to school [is] common. You have to go to school. So, the level of our education back in Ghana [is] very high; illiteracy is small. Most people have knowledge. They can read and write and also explain everything. But here, no, you scared to be around them, because they are racist towards you.

Yeah, and even if you are qualified to be given a position at [a] job, [the answer will be no] because you are African.

Yeah, you better give to someone who is from America who doesn’t know anything about the job than [give it to an] African man. There is so much racism, [and] we face it all the time. I fought to get, uh, downtown and do this security job every day. Trust me. Especially the blacks from America.

Lizania: Yeah.

Sheihu: If we say, “Fuck you I’m a New Yorker and they response, “Oh, no… oh, shit, man.” We respond in that way, because we may take their initial comment as as a racist. Because why can’t you talk to me in a polite way? Or I don’t want it.

Lizania: Oh, sí.

Sheihu: Pero [una] persona [te] subestimará porque eres de África. Sí. ¿Lo ves? Todos nosotros, hemos estado en clases, la secundaria, la universidad. Todos han ido. En Ghana, ir a la escuela [es] común. Tienes que ir a la escuela. Así que, el nivel de nuestra educación en Ghana [es] muy alto; el analfabetismo es poco. La mayoría de las personas tiene conocimiento.

Pueden leer y escribir y también explicar todo. Pero aquí, no, tienes miedo de estar cerca de ellos, porque son racistas contigo.

Sí, e incluso si estás calificado para obtener una posición en un trabajo, la respuesta será no porque eres africano.
