’ve just returned from three days in Devon,
three in my Top Favourite Brilliant Non-Poncey
having a short but sweet holiday with family. The house we stayed in looked out from the highest hill, over a deep valley and out to sea. In the evenings we sat on the veranda and watched the sun set over the water. It was unbelievably beautiful, tranquil and relaxing. The beaches we visited were vast and sandy, and the children ran and paddled and my husband did his speciality move: running into the freezing cold sea, screaming loudly for well over ten minutes while trying to muster the courage to submerge fully, then running out to much laughter and ridicule from us dry and wimpy grown-ups.
Pubs of all Time list. (Our family love this place so much that my dad is known as Grampus to his grandchildren). We walked from the beach to The Grampus along a footpath dotted with primroses and blossoming trees, propelled by our knowledge that they serve two of the most important things a pub can serve: great beer and great chips. After having too much of both (designated drivers excluded), we waddled blissfully back to find the cars, and drove back to our holiday house with the sea in almost constant view on one side and rolling green hills on the other.
I would go so far as to say that The Grampus at Lee Bay is probably number three in my Top Favourite Brilliant NonPoncEy Pubs Of All Time list. We revisited a favourite family haunt, Lee Bay. It’s a small village with a little beach and the very best pub. Having two brothers who work in the pub trade, mine is a family that appreciates a good boozer. I would go so far as to say that The Grampus at Lee Bay is probably number

Once the kids were asleep, our evenings were spent playing/cheating at board games, being fed wonderful/incredibly smelly seafood by my brother and watching the afore-mentioned sun set over the afore-mentioned sea. Bliss. Sometimes all you need is three days, a bit of sea, a good pub, people you love, and to know the school holidays are finally over.

DO/DEAL The Art of Negotiation Music industry lawyers and master deal negotiators Richard Hoare (whose clients include AJ Tracey and Glastonbury Festival) and Andrew Gummer (Pink Floyd) present DO/DEAL, a new book which breaks down the art of negotiation, moving it on from the stereotypical music business dealmaking battleground. Hoare and Gummer, who between them have over 50 years of experience in the music industry, share some engaging examples of doing major label deals and building long-lasting partnerships that uncover hidden value. With examples from Michael Eavis, Bonobo, Spotify, Richard Antwi, Dave Okumu and even Love Island, the authors illustrate that doing music deals can be a creative and collaborative experience that can benefit interactions and build trust towards long-term relationships. 4

Set in the peaceful gardens of the glorious Rook Lane Chapel, this fundraiser sounds like the ultimate way to while away a sunny Sunday afternoon. Cream teas will be accompanied by music from vintage inspired singer, Sticky Toffee Jazz, as she performs music influenced by classical Jazz, Swing and Blues, from Etta James and Sinatra to Adele and Paolo Nutini. This event is a joint fundraiser to raise money for the Frome Festival as well as for Frome Birth Talk (an amazing charity supporting new and expectant parents in Frome). Simon Hitchens, Beyond Body Black Swan Arts (Long Gallery), On until May 26th In Beyond Body, Simon Hitchens sets out to test the boundaries of what it is to be human by investigating the porous relationship we share with the non-human world of rock. He takes the notion that there is the galleries tower studios | shop | cafe or otherwise, possibility of a| round state of| being, sentient 2 Bridge Street, Frome BA1 1 1BB | 01373 473980 that is post-human; and he explores this through OPEN: Mon - Sun 10am - 4pm, FREE ENTRY a comprehensive body of work which questions differences between animate and inanimate. By working directly with rock and morphing it with the human body, Hitchens has made a series of hybrid works. They are uncanny beings which seek to reconceive the human. These works display strange living qualities, visceral unions between rock and flesh that seem to show the geological world and the flesh world as one. The preview is on 29th April, 6-8pm. All are welcome.
Zion Train Cheese & Grain, May 28th, 8pm, £15 One of the most unique and enjoyable live dub acts on the planet, their use of dynamic onstage dub mixing while performing alongside acoustic instruments and exceptional vocalists, make Zion Train one of a kind. Having played over 3,000 shows, including hugely popular festivals such as Glastonbury and Boomtown, Zion Train are now celebrating their 34th year together. 6

The Why Gallery, on until June 4th Daniel Morley is mainly known for his small object paintings on reclaimed pieces of wood. Towards the end of last year Daniel had been feeling the pull to explore something different. This exhibition will be a collection of postcard-sized paintings of unnoticed, outdoor scenes from around Frome. They will serve as foundation for larger works he will be working on this year along the same themes and ideas. Daniel is a selftaught artist and works from his studio at the Silk Mill.

The Animal Lighthouse By Frome writer Anthony Burt The Animal Lighthouse is a middle-grade adventure story for six to twelve-year olds, with a classic Treasure Island-Jungle Book feel to it. Set on a secret island somewhere in the Caribbean, in 1716, it’s about a boy called Jim Rogers who washed up on the beach as a baby in a barrel of rum. Jim has been brought up by animals and runs the lighthouse with them, until a thief steals the beam bulb filaments. When Jim goes on a mission to recover the filaments with his animal friends, he learns secrets about his family’s piratical past and who his real human father is in this warm-hearted, funny adventure filled with animal antics, action and gadgets galore! The Animal Lighthouse is written by Frome-based author Anthony Burt who, amongst other incredible things, has written for Disney and Nickelodeon, helped entertain 8,000 children in 20 days as host of the Imagination Lab at the Edinburgh International Book Festival, is a bookseller and a teacher, having worked in primary, secondary and adult education. Celebrating the 40th anniversary of the hit single Ghost Town, Neville Staple (from the Specials) will be playing shows up and down the country, with a date in Frome for all those local Specials fans. Including Drew Stansall in the line-up and support from Buster Shuffle, it will truly be a ‘Special’ night. Neville, known as the Original Rude Boy, was legendary frontman of the Specials, Fun Boy Three and Special Beat.
The Predicament of Jackson Scott Merlin Theatre, May 14th, 7.30pm, £14/£10 Deadly secrets don’t stay hidden for long: Jackson has killed his boyfriend Ted and has no choice but to cover up his death. However, a vision of Ted lives on in his mind, tormenting him about his new secret. Both Bernice and grief counsellor Alex are concerned for Jackson’s welfare, thinking something’s not quite right with his recent behaviour. The play is about queer relationships, grief and secrets, showing how keeping them from others can have disastrous consequences.

» the list recommends « Kris Drever and Rachel Baiman Concert Rook Lane, 26th May, 7.30pm, £19.99 On the heels of their respective new solo albums, Scottish folk star Kris Drever (LAU), and Nashville based Americana artist Rachel Baiman present a joint tour of the UK and Scotland in Spring 2022, featuring solo sets from each as well as unique collaborations drawing on their respective original material. Drever and Baiman are both heavily seeped in folk traditions, yet happily influenced by modern
sounds. Together they present a complimentary and transatlantic take on roots music, with stunning vocal harmonies and instrumental prowess.
Endangered The Whittox Gallery, April 30th - June 25th Endangered is the newest exhibition taking place at the Whittox Gallery, celebrating the work of accomplished South West artists Julia Manning RE SWLA and Nik Pollard SWLA. Both are members of the Society of Wildlife artists, inspired by our local wildlife and the plight of endangered species in our area, creating awareness and appreciation of local habitats and waterways. The exhibition features Julia Manning’s latest series of thought-provoking prints, ‘The Decline of Eels’, that she worked in collaboration with international eel expert, Andy Don. Her stunning body of work reveals the extraordinary life cycle, migration and environmental perils faced by this critically endangered species in our local Somerset waterways (including the River Frome) on the journey to their final destination of the Sargasso sea. Julia’s prints are moving but also beautiful limited edition wood and lino prints. “I could not believe that this dramatic saga is unfolding annually on our coastal doorstep. The story of our Somerset eels seems to resonate across all species. I felt compelled to capture some of these themes in my relief editioned prints. Our local wildlife is truly showing its connection to the global world,” Julia told us.
Nik Pollard’s paintings and drawings are generated from sustained, direct observation, and are often resolved in the field. A period of dedicated study at single or related locations is a necessary part of his process. Drawing from all the senses, he investigates the rhythms and characteristics of a location and its ecology, resulting in a sense of time and place. Nik has been involved in, and helped develop, a number of art/ conservation projects; he sees art education as a perfect opportunity to help people re-engage with nature and believes that art has a role in promoting conservation stories. It features new work by Ray Jones, David Wilkey, Alex Howell and Bradford-on-Avon artist Miles Cantelou. Miles combines photography, acrylic paint and blending substrate to produce quite exceptional abstract/ figurative work. One of Miles’ pieces can be seen in the main gallery window, in which he has used a layer of abstract acrylic painting over a photographed portrait, producing a highly eye-catching piece. Frome resident Paris is an internationally renowned street artist, having worked with Coldplay, touring with the band and creating the cover for their album Mylo Xyloto. He has also exhibited in New York and Tokyo. This exhibition on his home turf is one not to ZO’E be missed. The exhibition opens on May 20th and runs until June 9th. Private view on May 19th.
This autobiographical and immersive installation is both a compendium of protest art and a place for learning and contemplation, with talks, workshops and plenty of opportunities to get hands-on. Witness the power of street knowledge and learn about informing the masses while democratising art in the process.

Plus everything we sell is available for a quick takeaway.” “Frome has a lot of residents who are into healthled lifestyles and love to nourish their bodies with mostly plant-based diets, using ingredients from the earth. Our menu makes us unique in Frome. No-one in town really does what we do, the way we do it. Our menu is heavily plant based and is mostly fruit and vegetables with some grains and proteins. ince opening its doors in 2018, Nook has become a major part of Frome’s impressive foodie scene. The brainchild of Australian Fromie Millie, Nook was the culmination of twelve years of experience at cafés, restaurants and bars, and a passion for the vibrant food and atmosphere from Down Under. “I decided to be my own boss at 27 after I noticed a gap in the market locally for healthy, tasty and speedy nourishment. I started Nook to create and share nutritious and delicious food inspired by the café culture on the Australian beaches of South East Queensland, where I was raised.” Said Millie. “After eight years in Frome, I could see that there was space in the ever-growing food scene for a health-focussed café that could provide healthy and wholesome ‘food to go’ that caters for all diets. I wanted

“We decided to expand, and opened our second shop in Bath in November 2021.” During the lockdowns, Nook adapted quickly to provide both delivery and collection services for its customers. “We were so grateful to our supportive regulars who ordered from us during those difficult times, and for all the new customers we gained too.” And, with a growing customer base, the next step seemed inevitable, as Millie set her sights on our neighbouring city of Bath. “We decided to expand, and opened our second shop in Bath in November 2021. It seems that more and more people are becoming acutely aware of the benefits a healthy diet has for our physical and mental health.”

With the Bath shop now on a firm footing, Millie has her sights set on a new city. “After the success of Frome and Bath, we are now planning to expand further and open a third shop in Bristol. We want all of our shops to have an original quality to them that really focuses on community, using produce and suppliers that are local and independent.” Whilst Nook goes from strength to strength, Millie is still passionate about Nook’s first home, and its other resident foodies. “The Frome food scene just gets better and better with new food businesses opening each year. They mostly offer something new, or niche, that is welcomed by everyone. We are very blessed to not have an overly

HOME Frome’s Newest Eatery
A
s the saying goes, ‘Home is where the heart is’, and no truer word has ever been spoken when describing this place.
Keren Hayden of Events Horizon and Keren’s Comfort Kitchen and her band of merry women (and occasional men) opened up the doors to Home on Friday 15th April and have been feeding who they describe as wonderful people since. The concept of sharing and feasting has hit all the right notes so far, with everything from grazing boards featuring mountains of cheese, to tapas, ribs and not forgetting the puddings and cakes to die for. With a cosy downstairs area near the kitchen to a light and airy dining room, whatever you’re in the mood for, you’ll almost certainly find it at Home. Home was born at Nunney Acoustic Cafe, an event that Keren and her husband Francis run once a month, the idea sprouted quickly into a gofundme and two months later Home opened its doors. An impressive feat, and one that Frome has welcomed with open arms. Khatte Baingan is a sweet and sour curry from Kashmir, and it’s delicious. You can replace aubergine with other available, in season and good value vegetables. Mushrooms, squash, cauliflower and potatoes work particularly well.

Cut aubergine into 2cm cubes and pan fry in oil until all sides are browned and flesh is soft. Set aside in a bowl.

In the same pan, fry the onion until translucent, add garlic ginger paste and chilli and cook for a further 5 mins on a low heat, stirring regularly.

Put all your dried spices in a small bowl then scatter them over your onion mix. Stir well for 45 seconds before adding your tomatoes and a small glass of water, and leave to simmer gently.

In a small pan, mix the tamarind and jaggery/sugar with 100ml water and bring to the boil. Once bubbling, reduce heat slightly and simmer for 3 or 4 mins until you have a thick chutney consistency.

Now add the pan-fried aubergines and tamarind chutney to your tomato base and simmer for 10 mins.

Finally check seasoning and serve with rice, or naan, and a liberal sprinkle of coriander. A fresh raita goes well too.

THE RAIN FORESTS OF FROME BY DAVID HAMILTON
O
n the Atlantic side of Britain and all across the island of Ireland, the Gulf Stream brings warm waters from the Caribbean which help maintain a steady temperate climate, warming things up in the winter and cooling in the summer. Back in the distant past, when the wildwood covered most of Britain and Ireland, this high humidity and steady temperature gave rise to temperate rainforest stretching from the Highlands of Scotland to the tip of Cornwall and continuing south across France and the Iberian Peninsula. Similar forests still exist, albeit in semi depleted forms, in the USA from Alaska to California and New York State to Virginia. In Britain, there are just a few small fragments of these rainforests left, most of which are in western Scotland, Wales, Devon and Cornwall, with the odd exception in Somerset, including a tiny, precious fragment close to Frome at Vallis Vale. The definition of a rainforest is a forest whose humidity is such that it can support epiphytes, plants which grow on other plants. The trees at Vallis Vale have thick coatings of dark green moss around the trunk and grey-green, beardlike lichen pendulously dripping from the trees. Here, the main rainforest signifier - featherlike polypody ferns - are everywhere, sprouting from the branches. Beneath them on the forest floor signs of ancient wet woodlands are in abundance with the aptly named pendulous sedge and its long, drooping seed heads. Lianas, or woody vines, rooted in the soil snake along the soil and up the trees like something Tarzan would swing on.
Once you begin to look for these rainforest signifiers, the polypody fern, the lichen, the vines, you’ll begin to notice them everywhere. Heading out of Frome, close to Nunney, you’ll find them covering the older trees in the abandoned Asham Quarry, and closer to town they grow in scattered locations along the river. Parents of children at Trinity School might also spot a lone fern sprouting from the large tree growing in the school playground. I often look at this during school drop-off and wonder what the playground might have looked like back in the days when Frome was once primordial rainforest! Walk further into the woods and you come to the sprawling ruin of Fussell’s ironworks. Back in the days when this was still accessible, you would see trees sprouting up from the inside of buildings, the remains of fireplaces hanging without a purpose in upstairs rooms with all evidence of a ceiling above or floor below gone. On large oak beams suspended six feet in the air, ferns sprout as if on fallen deadwood. THE LIST FROME

time and loved the idea of using the teaching skills I had gained to share mending tips with other people. What is your physical creative process? What materials and techniques do you use? If I’m mending for myself, the creative process is normally based on practising a new mending technique or just starting out with a simple stitch and seeing where it takes me. If I’m working on a commission then I love chatting with the customer about what they want the repair on their clothing to say. I’m normally sent clothing that has sentimental value, so it’s really important to me that the repair respects that and gives it a new lease of life.
What is your artistic background? I studied Fashion Design Enterprise at UCA Epsom, where I specialised in menswear, but I’ve always been a creative magpie especially with anything craft based. Textiles was my favourite subject at school by far! I love exploring different crafts and always want to try something new; I’ve always had creative side projects on the go alongside work. What made you follow this path? Funnily enough, it was my degree that pushed me away from the fashion industry as, even back then, I felt uneasy about the overproduction of clothing and its impact on the planet, as well as the mistreatment of garment workers, which is still a huge issue. Slow Stitch Club is all about repairing clothing by using simple sewing techniques such as darning to visibly mend in a beautiful and intentional way. This keeps our favourite pieces in our wardrobes for longer, and out of landfill. It grew really organically through lockdown for me as I started sharing the clothing I was repairing and the tools I used to make it easier. I started an Instagram account and was amazed at how much people connected to what I was sharing. I was working as a textiles technician in a high school at the 22

Materials-wise, I try to use what I already have to hand as much as possible and love working with natural fibres such as linen. I most enjoy repairing with darning techniques, and they’re my favourite to teach at workshops, but I also love learning about Sashiko and think that it’s a great method of repair for denim especially. What inspires your work? On a larger scale I’m constantly driven forward by the change I can make from each repair - even if it’s only for a pair of socks. It’s an expression I end up repeating a lot - “it’s not about the socks!” - as it can be really frustrating when people don’t see the point in what I’m doing, but if I can help to keep even just one piece of clothing out of landfill for longer then it’s worth it. More personally, I love teaching and seeing others learn and experiment with their clothing. It’s so cool to see someone pick up a needle and thread for the first time and a few hours later have expressed their creativity and learnt a new skill to mend a favourite piece of clothing. How did lockdown affect the way you work and create? I held my first workshop the week before the first lockdown happened, so I had to transition to virtual

workshops really quickly. That was a huge learning curve but it allowed me to connect with people all over the world, which was amazing and something that I want to keep doing in the future. Obviously the lack of physical connection at workshops was really hard, especially when starting a new business, but there’s an amazing meditative and restorative feeling that comes from mending which in itself really helped during lockdown. I also had the time to work on and launch a kit and stitching templates during that time, which I was so grateful for. Where do you work from? Tell us about your studio. I work from my spare room which is an explosion of sewing machines, fabric and kits and tools that I sell on Etsy and for the Frome Independent. My desk changes daily, depending on whether I’m working on commissions, designing a new kit or packing orders. What is your favourite place to be for artistic inspiration? I’m from the Isle of Wight originally and always feel so inspired when I go back there to visit family. It’s a cliché I know but the sea always helps me to feel more creative. The great thing about repairing clothing is that there is always inspiration to be found from the damage itself. A moth-eaten jumper gives you a foundation for this random pattern of darns that can add colour and texture in a really beautiful way. What artists inspire you, and why? Fashion activists such as Orsola de Castro, who co-founded Fashion Revolution Week, always inspire me to keep learning and to keep going with clothing repair. There is a huge mending community of talented repairers to be found online and on Instagram especially; I’ve learnt so much about different repair techniques from others on there as well, learning about the cultural significance of techniques like Sashiko - @sashikostory run by Atsushi Futatsuya is a great account to check out if you’re new to the practice. If you hadn’t become an artist, what would you have done? I’d probably have become a teacher, although I hate public speaking! It was in the back of my mind for years before I found a way to combine teaching with my textile work.
How do you find the Frome area, in terms of creativity and artistic community? So inspiring! I moved to Frome a little over a year ago and am in awe of all the incredible makers and creatives here. I’ve been lucky enough to work with a few different makers already, and absolutely love how supportive the community seems to be. Are there any artistic processes/disciplines which you haven’t worked in/with, but would like to? I’ve just finished designing a set of wooden darning mushrooms with Harvey of Elkco Furniture, which has been so much fun - I’d love to try using a lathe and woodturning for myself at some point in the future. hen they met as colleagues, working at the Rose Garden in Frome, Jemima and Jennie had no idea that the business would one day belong to them.

When the Rose Garden closed its doors in January this year, staff were all uncertain as to whether it would open again, so when the owners made the difficult decision to downsize their commitments and leave the Rose Garden closed, they offered the staff the opportunity to buy the business. “Jennie and I met up for a glass of wine (or two) at the lovely Bar Lotte and realised we both saw that the Rose Garden had the potential to be one of only a few independent interior design stores, offering not only amazing products but expert knowledge and a passion to assist clients with their most important environment: the sanctity of their home. ur grandson was here the other day. As is the way of five year-olds, he is obsessed with making traps. His favourite method
used to be what he called “dog fishing”, over which I will draw a veil. But now, in lieu of dogs, he likes to entrap humans. And yesterday I fell foul of his latest device. It consisted mainly of long bits of rope wrapped round the mop and the broom and tied to the back door handle. Open the door and everything falls over with a loud crash. Hilarious. I untied and disentangled the ropes, picked up said utensils and leaned them neatly against the wall by the door where they always go. Then I went off and footled about in the veg patch for a couple of hours in the sun. When I returned later for a cup of tea, a blackbird flew out from the porch. Odd. What was she doing there? As I gripped the door handle, my idle gaze turned to the mop and broom, and my question was answered. For there, between the bristles and the mop head, was a nest. It was a thing of fragile beauty – perfectly circular, woven from twigs and grasses caulked with moss, and neatly plastered inside with mud. How had it got here? Had it fallen, or been blown from the hedge? Impossible. Yet it wasn’t here when I picked up the two tools earlier. In complete stupefaction, I called my wife, and we scratched our heads and sucked our teeth over the conundrum. The only possible explanation was that the blackbird had built the nest during the short time I’d been in the garden.

By any stretch, this was a staggering achievement. Simply gathering the materials would have taken long enough – let alone lugging them to the site and then weaving them together into a snug and selfsupporting home. All without stopping for a cup of tea and a rollup, or finding somewhere to plug in the boombox, or driving back to Wickes for something you’d forgotten. So it was tragic that she had chosen to build this great work on the sponge of an unsteady upturned mop, about three inches from an opening door. It had to go. I eased it out, as gently as if it were an exploded bomb, and moved to a nearby hedge. But the blackbird, like a great artist spurned, never went near it.
