OUT & ABOUT

Thriplow Daffodil Weekend

SATURDAY 5 & SUNDAY 6th April

Britain’s most famous daffodil festival takes place on the weekend of 5/6th April 2014. The residents in the South Cambridgeshire village of Thriplow are getting ready for their 46th annual Daffodil Weekend, when between 7000 and 10 000 people visit to see the wonderful blooms . Virtually everyone in the village does something towards the event, be it baking cakes, helping serve teas, working in the car park or picking up litter at the end of the day to bring off one of the best loved charity events in Cambridgeshire. Daffodil Weekend started in 1969 because the church was in need of major roof repairs. Residents decided to open up their gardens and made cups of tea from their own houses. They made an amazing £206 and were so delighted they decided to do it all again the following year – and so Thriplow Daffodil Weekend was born. Since 1969 a total of over £400,000 has been raised for local charities. This year we are supporting Home-Start Royston & South Cambridgeshire (www.hsrsc.org.uk/) as our external charity. Home-Start helps families with children under the age of five cope with post natal depression, illness, isolation, bereavement, disability, domestic abuse and much more, offering regular support and practical help to alleviate stress with a view to preventing family crisis and breakdown. Visitors step back in time, walking traffic-free lanes and connecting footpaths, visiting residents ‘Open Gardens’, Craft Barns, Marquees, Stalls and Demonstrations, and experiencing the warm and friendly atmosphere. There is something for everyone, young and old; from a flower festival in the Church and Sheepdog demonstrations on the Meadow, to Morris Dancers outside the pub and vintage vehicles and classic cars at the School. Heavy horses give dray rides up and down the main street and there is traditional music wherever you go. Local food producers are celebrated at ‘Taste of Thriplow’ on Peggs Close and no visitor should miss the home-baked, ‘Thriplow Teas’. The community owned traditional British pub The Green Man will be hosting their usual hog roast at the front of the building and will have real ales in both the pub and in the “Taste of Thriplow” tent. Everything you require for a great day out is catered for. NEW ATTRACTIONS FOR 2014: • Classic Cars • Local Food Fair • Steam Organ • Miniature Steam Railway Rides • Folk Music Tent

5th and 6th April, 11 am to 5pm £5 for adults, £2.50 for children and under school age get in FREE. www.thriplowdaffodils.org.uk

Spring Open Gardens, meldreth

As part of the fund raising events for maintaining the fabric of Holy Trinity Church Meldreth, The Friends are holding their Spring Open Gardens event on Sunday 27th April. The Friends held their first Open Gardens in the mid 1980s and the spring event started in 2005. This year there is a mixture of gardens across the village ranging from a small vegetable garden keenly tended by a retired gardener to an attractive garden in a 2 acre woodland setting. Teas will be served at the church all afternoon. As in previous years the Garden Design Centre based at Scotsdale will support our event with a free Garden Design Consultation that will be raffled. Admission is £4 and children 50p and there is ample free off road parking at the church.

Dane’s Blood

Pulsatilla Vulgaris is the rather uninspiring name for the bright purple and yellow flower featured on our cover this month. It’s more commonly known as Pasque Flower and, rather more excitingly, as Dane’s Blood. The Pasque Flower is the county flower of Hertfordshire and it blooms in late March / early May on the well drained chalky soil of Church Hill on Therfield Heath. It’s name means “like Paschal” or of Easter and legend tells that it springs from the blood of dead Vikings! This fable may well have developed as it grows in the undisturbed soil of ancient barrows – like the ones that can be found on the rolling heath land of Coronation Meadows. This site is a Site of Special Scientific Interest, a Local Nature reserve and one of the largest colonies of this rare plant. Why not venture out to see them and follow this walk printed with kind permission of Great Shelford Parish Council (http://shelford.lucidata. com/walks/walk44.htm) and pop in to the Fox and Duck at Therfield for a pint or bite to eat.

Clean and Fresh

Clear the clutter, sort your stuff and make everything in your home spick and span – your home will feel revitalised, and so will you, says Katherine Sorrell Are you closer to being the goddess of grime than the queen of clean? Spring sunshine means that it’s the ideal time to don your apron, snap on your Marigolds and refresh your home from top to bottom. If you really can’t bear the thought of tackling every room at once, you could spend perhaps an hour a week or else tackle one room at a time until your home feels truly transformed. So, where should you begin? The obvious place is with a good, old-fashioned tidy up, paying attention to all your tables, shelves, floors and other surfaces, inside kitchen and bathroom cupboards, bedroom wardrobes and chests of drawers. Once you have cleared the space, you are almost ready to begin. But not quite. Make a list of what needs doing (this may be rather timeconsuming, but will be worth it in the end) and allocate some time for each chore. Then dig out appropriate clothing. What to wear will depend on the task at hand, but should include an old shirt and trousers, and could also mean rubber gloves, sturdy shoes, an apron and a dust mask or safety goggles. Next, assemble your equipment – from brooms and scrubbing brushes to buckets and cloths. Having it ready beforehand will save time

and effort later. Lastly, find the cleaning products you’ll require, including an all-purpose household cleaner, washing-up liquid, furniture polish, non-chlorine bleach, anti-mildew tile and bath cleaner and window cleaner. Store them in a heavy-duty caddy with a handle. At last you’re ready, so refer back to your list of what needs doing – you’ll see it divides into five main areas: vacuuming, dusting, mopping/ scrubbing, washing and wiping, and polishing as well as room specific tasks, such as turning mattresses, spot-cleaning upholstery, cleaning the oven, defrosting the fridge, descaling the shower head and beating rugs. You could also sort out those less frequently required jobs such as steamcleaning the carpets or having the chimney swept. Before you embark, bear in mind the basic principles of cleaning: work from top to bottom (dust the light fitting before polishing the table beneath) and tackle dry before wet (vacuum before mopping, obviously). Try to be organised, whether you work one room at a time or one task at a time. With a little forethought, preparation and organisation, spring cleaning can be a rewarding activity that will restore your home to its rightful place as a peaceful haven that is well-kept, tidy and gleamingly, squeaky clean.

Including a Question and Answer Session after the film with Animator Em Cooper. Employing a lyrical mix of interviews, meditative landscape photography and animation (from UK artist Em Cooper) Kiss the Water explores a remarkable woman’s utter dedication to the perfection of her craft. Electrician and sometimes rodeo bull rider Ron Woodroof played by Matthew McConaughey lives hard, which includes heavy smoking, drinking, drug use (primarily cocaine) and casual sex. While in the hospital on a work related injury, the doctors discover and inform him that he is HIV+, and that he will most-likely die within 30 days. The Invisible Woman brings the story of how famous writer Charles Dickens falls in love with a much younger woman, Ellen “Nelly” Ternan”. A jewel directed and starring Ralph Fiennes. Using his most ingenious invention, the WABAC machine, Mr. Peabody and his adopted boy Sherman hurtle back in time to experience world-changing events first-hand. They find themselves in a race to save the future. Based on the true story of the greatest treasure hunt in history this is an action drama focusing on an unlikely World War II platoon, tasked by FDR with going into Germany to rescue artistic masterpieces from Nazi thieves.

Horror/Drama/Romance

An underground musician reunites with his lover for centuries after he becomes depressed and tired with the direction human society has taken. Their love is interrupted and tested by her wild and uncontrollable little sister. Wonderful imagery style and atmosphere in the extreme, with great acting. E.B., the Easter Bunny’s teenage son, heads to Hollywood, and is determined to become a drummer in a rock ‘n’ roll band. Whilst In LA, he’s taken in by Fred after the out-of-work slacker hits E.B. with his car.

Drama/War

Based on the beloved bestselling book the film tells the story of a spirited and courageous young girl who transforms the lives of everyone around her when she is sent to live with a foster family in World War II Germany. Friday 25th 7.30PM Her (15) Drama/Romance/Sci-Fi Theodore is a lonely man in the final stages of his divorce. When he’s not working as a letter writer, his down time is spent playing video games and occasionally hanging out with friends. He decides to purchase the new OS1, and quickly finds himself drawn in with Samantha, the voice behind his OS1. Recounts the adventures of Gustave H (Ralph Fiennes) a legendary concierge at a famous European hotel between the wars, and Zero Moustafa, the lobby boy who becomes his most trusted friend.

Politics with Integrity?

You can tell there’s a general election looming next year, because our politicians are falling over themselves to deliver smiling sound-bites, hinting at new crowd-pleasing legislation. Now I know that UK elections can involve negative name-calling and the ‘vote for julian berry us because the others are worse’ interviews, but that’s politics, isn’t it? In the corporate world, to be accused of ‘playing politics’ is usually an insult, although there are those who believe we could all learn useful and constructive lessons from our Right Honourable friends. I was going to write about communication but, as The Listing closed for press, I heard the news about the death of veteran politician, Tony Benn. Whatever you think about his politics, he was a highly principled MP who fought for the rights of the individual for 50 years. Many bosses would do well to take a leaf out of his book: he knew exactly what he stood for, and managed himself with integrity. In an interview in 2005, Tony Benn said every politician should ask themselves five important questions: “What power have you got? Where did you get it from? In whose interests do you exercise it? To whom are you accountable? How can we get rid of you?” He then added, “Only democracy gives us that right. That is why no-one with power likes democracy and that is why every generation must struggle to win it and keep it; including you and me, here and now.” I think those questions should be asked by every person wielding power or authority over any other, be they a boss, a manager, a team leader – or even a teacher with a class-full of students. Answer those questions and then lead from the front, trusting your principles, knowing who you are ‘working’ for and never giving up the fight for what you believe in. www.julianberry.co.uk

HOMES & GARDENS

Spring has arrived in the garden, in this new feature I will be suggesting ways to make improvements to your outdoor spaces to make them more enjoyable.

1. Harmony of materials

When planning any hard landscaping, for example patios, walls or gravelled areas, it is important when selecting the stone that you consider others used in the area. I recommend using similar colours to the bricks on your house or existing walls.

2. Gradual Reveal

However large or small, the best gardens offer a sense of experience as the garden reveals itself. This can be achieved using a well-positioned larger shrub, section of hedging, willow fencing, wood structures or a rendered wall with windows to show there is more to discover and explore beyond!

3. All year round interest

Now is the time to be capturing the growing season. When planning new planting try to include plants that will offer all year round interest. There are many good evergreen choices such as box and yew that will give good structure throughout the seasons and I recommend starting with these. Then arrange other deciduous shrubs and flowers to provide contrast, colour and variation.

4. Scent

Scent is a very important way in which we connect with the garden. Consider where to best position scented plants for maximum enjoyment. Lavender and Rosemary work well close to a path where they can be brushed passed. Roses and honey suckles are great for pergolas and arches or trained around an entrance to a door. Jasmine provides a beautiful scent ideal for relaxing warm sunny evenings. Scent is very objective so choose plants that you will never tire of smelling especially when it is growing by your patio.

5. Vertical interest

Every garden needs vertical interest. This could be achieved using a pergola or arch with climbing plants or a modern structure providing a more dramatic effect. Alternatively and more simply vertical interest can be achieved by training plants such as Wisteria or climbing roses up existing structures such as walls and fences. Where space will allow a suitable tree choice will give years of enjoyment. Go for it! Start with little changes, it can make all the difference to your enjoyment of the garden! Detroit Motor Show Stars Over the next two issues, James Baggott, editor of CarDealerMagazine.co.uk, reports on the big new car debuts breaking cover in Motor City It’s one of the most iconic car shows in the motoring calendar, and this year the stars were out in full force in Detroit. As the covers came off the cars in Motor City, we were treated to some key new model introductions and not just from the home American brands. The Europeans, Japanese and Koreans were all out in full force too with some stellar debuts of key cars for the UK market. Here’s our pick of the new models. Mercedes C Class This is big news for one of the most competitive sectors in the UK market. Meet Mercedes’ new C Class, a car that’ll take the fight to its bitter rival, and better selling, BMW 3 Series. Merc has worked wonders in the cabin – the quality is stunning and will make German rivals sit up and take notice. The manufacturer says this is their ‘most agile and efficient car ever’ and will be a ‘new benchmark’ in the segment. We’ll have to wait and see about that – but there’s little doubt they’ve got the looks spot on.

Toyota FT-1 This bonkers crazy concept was created by Toyota’s sandal wearing Californian design team – but don’t fear, it’s no hippy machine. The FT-1 stands for ‘Future Toyota’ and while it is said to be a spiritual successor to the iconic Supra and 2000GT it’s really designed to show the maker’s future design direction. There’s no word on what’s under the bonnet at present, but rumour has it it’s likely to be a traditional combustion engine with high output. BMW M4 / M3 Nothing gets car fans excited quite like an Mbadged BMW and Detroit had not one, but two of them. The M4 is the new name in the line-up – the coupe version of the performance car. There’s a new M3, now a saloon only, and both share a new six-cylinder turbo-charged unit for the first time. BMW says emissions and fuel economy are 25 per cent better, though, so don’t mourn the V8’s death for too long. The new 2 Series Coupe was shown off in Detroit too – but it stole little of the limelight… Infiniti Q50 Eau Rouge If the Q50 is up-and-coming Infiniti’s answer to the 3 Series and C Class, then this is the AMG or M-badged rival. Draped in carbon fibre and drawing inspiration from the Red Bull F1 team hook-up, the Eau Rouge concept – named after Spa’s all-or-nothing corner – is believed to get a 500bhp powerplant if it ever gets the go-ahead. Look out for more favourites next month in our May Motoring section.
