Welcome

April Booking Deadline Friday 13th March

March has sprung upon us. The daffodils are beginning to bloom, the evenings are lighter and the fantastic 175th edition of The Listing has landed in your letterbox. This month, we reflect on how far The Listing has come since its birth in 2005, as well as enjoying Tallulah’s Banoffee Pavlova and Richard’s plant planning for the season ahead.

We shine a spotlight on Home-Start Matters, take a look at Thriplow Daffodil Weekend and chat to Ashley Catlin of Kip McGrath for this month’s My Local Life. Finally, from all of us at The Listing we’d like to wish every Mother, Auntie, Nan and Gran a happy Mother’s Day and also a happy St Patrick’s Day to our Irish Royston residents.

Loving Local Living The Listing started life back in September 2005 in a time before the internet was widely used, mobiles were solely for texting and calling, and Facebook had yet to be launched beyond Harvard University. There was a big gap for accessible, accurate local information, and The Listing lauched as a fresh new community magazine for Royston and the surrounding Villages, focusing on upcoming events, clubs and societies and promoting local businesses. 175 issues later, and The Listing has firmly established itself as Royston and SG8’s go-to what’s on guide for bringing the community together.

The Listing Team

The Listing is an independent business, and was launched in print only by Cath McKee/Boughton, who continues to head up the team and ensures the magazines are printed and delivered, looks for future opportunities and manages our sister marketing company. Sharon Windebank joined the business almost seven years ago, and has been instrumental in extending The Listing brand across our digital platforms - online and media channels. In today’s world, it is essential that our content is easily accessible online - in fact we have almost 8,000 consumers of our digital content every month. Sharon works with businesses throughout the area, developing their multi-channel advertising and marketing campaigns. If you run a local organisation, it is likely that you will have worked with our publishing assistant Tom Fox, who compiles and writes our editorial. Tom is with us two days a week until September when he goes to university to study Politics, Philosophy and Economics. Monica Ryan runs her own creative business in Melbourn, and brings her creative flair to The Listing to create new adverts for our magazine customers, and creative projects for our marketing clients. Our ethos has been to work with and inspire young people who are looking to develop their career in marketing, publishing or journalism, and joining Tom is our marketing assistant Molly Everitt, who promotes our customers’ businesses and events across our digital media channels Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and Linkedin. Laurie Brewster compiles our What’s On calendar, which appears on our website and in the printed magazines, full of community events happening in the SG8 area. Events are free to list so do get in touch. Lucy Boughton is back to support the team as an extra pair of hands around press times, using her marketing and design skills.

issues of The Listing

The Listing team - Monica, Tom, Cath, Laurie, Sharon, Molly and Lucy Finally, our amazing team of 40 deliverers - local young people, families and retired people ensure that The Listing reaches your letterbox!

The Listing Magazine

We publish two editions of The Listing each month - The Listing Royston and The Listing SG8 Villages, which are hand delivered to over 16,500 homes in the SG8 area, increasing as and when to reach the new housing developments. We are at the heart of the community and each month work with some 3oo+ organisations, events organisers and businesses to publish their news and information.

The Listing Online

Our website receives almost 3,000 unique visitors a month. Digital versions of The Listing can be read on your laptop, tablet or mobile phone, meaning you can access content on the go. There’s an archive of the past year’s worth of magazines too so if you’re looking for a number and need to reference back you can easily find it. The Listing clubs and societies directory contains details of some 450+ clubs and societies, and is also used on the Royston Town Website in conjunction with our What’s on events Calendar. Businesses receive the added benefit of appearing in our SEO-friendly online business directory when they are advertising with us, boosting their own digital presence and ensuring their details are easily found online - especially important for those businesses who don’t have a website or social media presence.

The Listing Marketing Company

Alongside business advertising and leaflet distribution, our sister company offers a range of marketing services from design, social media management, print and websites.

Stay in touch with The Listing at www.thelistingmagazine.co.uk or if you would like to discuss how The Listing can help you promote your business, event or organisation, contact us on 01763 248447 or info@townhousepublishing.co.uk

With live music being played all around the village it’s the perfect place to get some springtime cheer. For months beforehand and over the weekend itself, virtually everyone in the village (and many neighbouring villagers) volunteer to help organise the event – be it baking cakes, helping serve teas, working in the car park or picking up litter at the end of the day. Every year, the exceptional Thriplow community works hard to pull off one of the best loved charity events in Cambridgeshire. Raising funds for charity We have now raised money for local charities to a total of £617,000 over 52 years. The tireless work of the village was recognised in 2011 when the Committee received The Queens Award for Voluntary Service (the equivalent of an MBE for charities). This year our nominated charities are the Royal Papworth Charity and East Anglian Air Ambulance. We’d like to welcome Scotty Circus Workshops and Kids Drive to the line-up at ‘Family Thriplow’. My Local Life

Ashley Catlin - kip mcgrath Kip McGrath opened in April 2019 and offers tuition for children from the age of 6-16 in English and mathematics. The centre initially offers a free, no obligation assessment where they identify areas of the curriculum where the student may have gaps in their learning. Students work closely with the tutor to bridge these gaps and improve their confidence. The Listing caught up with Ashley Catlin to find out about his local life. Where do you live? Baldock. What Is your favourite local eatery? I particularly enjoy Grapevine in Letchworth. What is the book you last read? The golfer Ian Poulter’s autobiography called No Limits. What makes you happy? Spending time with friends and family. What do you love about your work? Seeing children grasp a concept and improve their confidence.

Business Profile

Kip McGrath Royston opened in April last year and we approach our first anniversary. The decision to open a new business was taken after working in education for over 25 years. The opportunity to be my own boss and build my own centre has been exciting and at times stressful. During the year we have initiated a few local projects, last summer we launched the teacher of the year award won by Mr Strahan. In October we started the Royston Book Hunt, which has been set up to encourage young people to read. We have hidden over 300 books in and around the town and hope children will continue to hide the books once they have read them. We will be hiding more books when the weather improves. This time of year sees us preparing for the forthcoming GCSE exams as well as SATs, students are working hard to cement their

What is your favourite way to spend a Saturday? Playing cricket. What are you looking forward to the most this month? The lighter evenings.

What is the most challenging aspect of your position? Continuing to develop interesting material and attracting clients. What is your proudest moment? Delivering my second son Harry. What is the best thing to happen to you recently? My son being selected for the county golf squad. What has been the most valuable life lesson that you have learnt? Follow your dream and don’t worry about being knocked back What inspirational quote sums you up ‘A wise man learns by the mistake of others’ knowledge and to work on a strategy to make them feel confident in undertaking these exams. We would like to thank everyone for their support in our first year and look forward to supporting more local young people in the near future. From Tallulah’s Kitchen

Banoffee Pavlova

Hello, my fellow foodies, and welcome to March’s edition of The Listing. This month I would like to share with you a recipe which combines two of my favourite desserts: Banoffee Pie and Pavlova. I first discovered Banoffee Pie way back when I had a Sunday job waiting in a local restaurant. I used to hope that the dessert trolley would still have some left at the end of service as my fellow waitresses and I would be allowed to gobble up any leftovers. Happy days! And what’s not to like about a pavlova? Hopefully I have combined the best of both desserts. Let me know what you think. Banoffee Pavlova (6-8 Portions) 6-8 portions 4 egg whites from happy and healthy free running hens 250g Caster Sugar 1tsp White Wine Vinegar 1tsp Cornflour 1 tsp Coffee Powder For the Topping 350ml Double Cream 1tsp Coffee Powder 3-4 Bananas 20g Icing Sugar 200g Dulce De Leche

Leisure

To begin, draw around a dinner plate onto baking parchment to mark out the base of the pavlova and pop the oven on to 150°C to preheat. Next, in a scrupulously clean and grease-free bowl, whisk the egg whites until they form stiff peaks. After, whisk in the caster sugar a spoonful at a time until you have a beautiful glossy mixture. Now, in a slow drizzle, whisk in the vinegar, then the cornflour and the coffee powder. Then, spread, pipe, dollop (whatever is your thing!) the mixture onto the baking parchment and within the previously drawn circle, then bake in the oven for one hour. After this time, turn off the oven but leave the meringue in the oven and avoid opening the door until the oven has completely cooled; this will help prevent cracking. The final product will keep for a week as long as it is kept in an airtight container. When you are ready to serve, simply whip up the cream until you have soft peaks. Then, with a spoon, stir in the icing sugar and the coffee powder until evenly mixedyou may prefer a sweeter/more coffee taste so feel free to adjust the amounts to suit your palette. Spoon the cream on top of the meringue, then just before serving add the sliced bananas and finish with drizzles of Dulce De Leche over the top. You may have to slightly warm the Dulce De Leche to be runny enough to drizzle it or you may just go with the more “rustic” looking effect! Either way, enjoy it! Until next time dear reader,

News from Royston market New street-food on Royston Market! There is a new trader starting on the Saturday Market this month. Jayne, the owner of Backstreet Catering is a local chef who first ran a stall on the market in 2010 and worked in a number of establishments in Royston over the past decade including the Old Bull Inn and most recently the Heath Café. She also ran a very popular pop-up restaurant from her home for a number of years and many people in Royston will know her as ‘Gin House Jayne’. She will be cooking all-day breakfasts which will include vegetarian, vegan and gluten free options. There will be homemade soups as well as other comfort foods to enjoy in this cold weather. Hot and cold beverages are also available with an array of home-made cakes and other treats. Good luck Jayne! To keep up to date with the Market News, follow @RoystonMarket on Facebook

An Evening with the river Mel

Inspired by the River Mel, which rises in Melbourn, poet Clare Crossman wrote nine poems capturing the essence of our beautiful chalk stream. She then linked up with film maker James Murray White to make a film about the river based on her poems. Further filming has been carried out by Nigel Kinnings who has also edited the film. More details about the project can be found at waterlightproject.org.uk After a year of capturing memories, interviewing residents, involving Meldreth primary school children and extensively filming, the film is now going to be shown in Meldreth. Royston drama group CADS will be performing a one-act play entitled “Strangers on a Film” at the Sawston Drama Festival on Thursday 19th March. The play has been adapted for the stage by local author Roy Maddox from a radio play by Stephen Wyatt and imagines a series of meetings between Alfred Hitchcock and Raymond Chandler in 1950 when the film director was looking for someone to write the screenplay for his next movie. Museum Musings: Royston Cave

We will have a whole section about the Cave and its history, including objects on display. To make it even more accessible, there’ll be a Virtual Reality exploration of the cave. You can sit in the comfort of the museum and still see what’s down there. We’re really excited to be able to give more people access to the cave and get a feel for what it’s like. The cave will open for the 2020 season in April, but pop into the museum before to find out more about this amazing piece of local history right beneath our feet. Come and join us on the 21st March from 10am to check it out. We’ve also been moving our other displays around too. There’s so much space in the museum!

New East-West Railway in Cambridge In January, Transport Secretary Grant Shapps confirmed a new East West Railway will connect Cambridge and Oxford, passing through Cambourne.

There are still many hurdles to overcome before construction is approved but this marks an important step in improving regional connectivity. Previous routes included a new station in Bassingbourn but this has been scrapped, citing huge environmental destruction as a factor. The new line will see the Cambridge to Oxford route revived after its closure in the 1960s. Plans also include a new Cambridge South station, with the route passing through Cambourne, St Neots/Sandy, Bedford, Milton Keynes, Bicester and on to Oxford. No detailed timeline has been published but some estimate the line may be fully-functional by 2030, creating huge opportunities for growth, productivity and housing. www.bit.ly/East-WestRail

Invite to Participate in a Client Survey of Law Firms and Others IRN Research, an established market research agency, is looking for individuals to take part in a short telephone interview. If you have used a solicitor or other professional adviser such as an accountant or a conveyancer in the last 18 months to help with any of the following – selling or purchasing a residential property, a family law issue such as a divorce, or dealing with a deceased person’s estate - we would love to get your feedback on your choice of adviser and the services they offered.

All the interviews will be completely confidential and, in return for completing the interview, we will give you an Amazon voucher. If you are interested in taking part please email sandy@irn-research.com with your name and your telephone number, or leave a message and your telephone number on 07956 414629. We will contact you to tell you a little more about the project and see if we can set up an interview time.

Think Garden, Think Richard

How To Use Plants...

Home & Garden

by Melbourn garden designer, Richard Arnott

Planning For a Successful Season To give plants the opportunity to shine in the garden, the space needs to be planned. We all have different starting points to making changes in the garden.

It might be that you have moved to a new build with a blank canvas or you have a neglected space that needs reviving but the need for a proper plan is always required for a successful outcome. Here is the process of having your garden designed to give the plants the chance to be the stars of the garden. Design brief is required for any garden to develop. This is a working list of the requirements for the garden such as a grassy space for the children to play, a dining area for family parties and a screened off shed all in a naturalistic planting style. The challenge for the garden designer is to carefully develop the brief and guide the client to a successful outcome. It is an evolving process that asks many questions. I always like to talk about planting styles, colour and plant influences early on in the process to get an idea in my mind’s eye that I can then develop. Pinterest is a good way to share ideas. Once the brief is agreed a survey is carried out and work begins on the design concept. Design concept is a visual presentation of how the garden could look. It takes the form of a 2d design drawing with printouts and accompanying mood board and or a 3d moving visual model. I always like to include key structural planting on the plan and planting style visuals on the mood board. This helps to keep the plants at the forefront of the process rather than an afterthought. To me the plants are just as important as the hard landscaping detail to the success of a finished garden. Samples are considered too at this concept stage. Design detailing is the refinement of the design concept. It includes all the details necessary to build the garden such as paved areas, slatted timber details on the fences, to step details and material transition points. The drawing is produced in architect’s software, to scale and is a fixed piece of work. The beauty of having a definitive plan to follow is that this allows for construction to take place in a phased approach if required. Planting plan is where the garden is brought to life and is one of my favourite parts of the process. As you will know if you are a regular reader of my articles, I love my plants! It can

be hard to restrict the urge to include my favourite plants in gardens when the brief is dictating a low maintenance, architectural foliage requirement, but this is the discipline of a good garden designer. Making the garden that is requested from the client rather than imposing your own personal taste. I love to work with loose herbaceous perennials and grasses offset against structural hedges, trees, and shrubs in a contemporary English country cottage style but love the challenge of something new. Landscape construction is where the design on paper then begins to evolve on the ground. Ground works are carried out, hard features built, and planting areas prepared. As the planting takes place, I love seeing my ideas coming to life on the ground. Mother Nature then takes over and as the planting establishes and matures good horticultural practice as required will mean that the space can bring pleasure and enjoyment for the client for years to come. If you are thinking of making changes this year, why not plan now to enjoy this summer!

I moved here with my family in 1988 from Hampshire. I have played and coached sports in the area ever since then, probably best known for my cricket coaching at Bassingbourn and Royston Cricket Clubs, as well as many schools in the area.

The PC Doctor will get your PC back in tip-top health and squeaky clean!

PC Doctor Edward (your local computer GP)

I also enjoy playing recreational table tennis at Bassingbourn and play Real Tennis, somewhat more competitively, in Cambridge and at Hatfield.

The Wright Accounts • Bookkeeping

I decided to start a business writing Wills and Lasting Power of Attorneys (LPAs), meeting people in their own homes and at times that suited them. This has proved popular and is the business I offer to the people of Royston and the surrounding area.

If you need a Will or LPA, don’t hesitate to get in touch. 07853 389432 David@willsbydavidisherwood.co.uk www.willsbydavidisherwood.co.uk

Spring Clean Your Business It’s March! How can we put a spring in your business step? You can do a lot worse than treating your business like you might treat yourself.

The best businesses get out and about, and talk to their customers – if you don’t know what they want, how can you be sure you’re giving it to them?

1. A new wardrobe? You don’t need to change just because of a time of year but I always think that spring is a great time to critically assess your business ‘look’.

4. Be a better friend? What can you do to keep your customers loyal and coming back (customer retention is so much cheaper than customer acquisition).

Maybe it’s refreshing your homepage, maybe looking at your flyers, or even just decluttering your office or splashing some fresh paint around.

Give them what they want and work hard to keep yourself in the front of their minds when decision-making time comes around.

2. A better social life? Where do you go, who do you want to meet? Would it be refreshing to try different clubs? But I’m talking about your social media life. Are you on Facebook, Twitter, or Instagram? Do they attract the people you want to attract? Maybe your business would enjoy LinkedIn, Pinterest or Tiktok perhaps? 3. Get out more? Do you really know what your customers want? And how do you know that?

5. Keep a check on your spending? Review where your big money is going – is it giving you a return? And maybe have a ring around to see if you can reduce those utility bills. Now do a budget and stick to it! 6. Enjoy yourself I’ll leave the last word to poet, Christina Rossetti, ‘There is no time like Spring, When life’s alive in everything.’ julian@julianberry.co.uk
