Update on Royston Parish Church During the last couple of months, a number of things have been occurring behind the scenes in order to move forward the re-instatement of our beautiful church. Tenders for the high-level work on the building to initially repair the roof were received, following which work will be commencing. This will result in the scaffolding and covering being removed along the nave of the church. We are also at an advanced stage in determining the re-ordering of the church as architects’ plans are finalised; prior to seeking approval from the diocese for the work to be commenced.
We hope to provide further details on each of these in further updates during the year. In the meantime, we are pleased to report that there has been significant interest in our proposed Sponsor a Chair Scheme as well as offers to acquire some of the old pews.

We are an independent social walking group that goes for an amble across Therfield Heath every Wednesday at 1.30pm from the Heath Café, Royston.

We are a friendly, welcoming, positively inclusive and non-cliquey group and welcome children, buggies and dogs; the walks are free. In the last 17 months we’ve had over 150 different people walk with us but there is room for many more so if you fancy a leisurely walk, a chat and a brew afterwards please feel free to join us.
Medical Detection Dogs trains dogs to detect the odour of human disease. The Bio-Detection Dogs are trained to find the odour of diseases, such as cancer, in samples such as urine, breath and swabs. The Medical Alert Assistance Dogs are trained to detect minute changes in an individual’s personal odour triggered by their disease and alert them to an impending medical event.
At the end of December we held our Christmas lunch at the Heath Café and had 60 people in attendance. This year we decided to raise funds for a charity and chose Medical Detection Dogs as the one we wanted to support. Our raffle raised enough funds to sponsor two puppies through their first year of training as detection or alert dogs.

Toad In a hole
It may be February – but panto season isn’t yet behind us, at least not in Barkway. A troupe of seasoned local thespians are getting ready to present their 28th annual pantomime, Toad in a Hole. As you might guess, the show is inspired by Kenneth Grahame’s Wind in the Willows. Full of colour, music and laughs, it features many of the well-loved characters from that tale, alongside others dreamed up by the Barkway Players’ in-house creative team. Founder member and music director Edwin Kilby tells us that a Wind in the Willows-based show has been an ambition among the Barkway Players for some time. “We always write our own material and try to create something different. The characters of Toad, Ratty and the friends are much-loved in English literature, and we’ve thought for some time that we could make a great pantomime using them, but we needed a suitably original storyline. This year our scriptwriting team have come up with a great idea which we think the audience will love.” The Barkway Pantomime has become something of a community tradition. The present series has continued without a break since 1993. The event raises money to help support Barkway Village Hall, a registered charity. This year the Hall has invested heavily in new LED stage lighting, and the proceeds will help pay for it.
New members are always welcome and you don’t have to live in Barkway to take part. Local Members of Parliament: who’s In, Who’s Out? By Tom Fox
The Listing delivers to two different parliamentary constituencies; North East Hertfordshire which covers Royston and the villages to the south of the town, and South Cambridgeshire, covering villages north of the A505 bypass.
With Heidi Allen stepping down, the Liberal Democrats stood Ian Sollom as their candidate to fight the December 12th General Election, the Conservatives stood Anthony Browne and Labour stood Dan Greef. Congratulations to Anthony Browne for winning the seat. The full result can be seen to the right.

2019 saw Heidi Allen step down as the MP for South Cambridgeshire after a colourful year. She began the year as a Conservative but resigned from the party in February to join the newly created Change UK. After a disappointing run in the European Elections, Allen quit Change UK too, and became an independent. The final twist in the story came in October when she revealed that she would initially stand as the Liberal Democrat candidate in South Cambridgeshire at the next election but decided later on in the month to take a step back from politics all together, after she suffered what she called “utterly dehumanising” abuse and was “exhausted” by the “nastiness and intimidation” she had faced.
For North East Hertfordshire, the election saw Royston-resident Sir Oliver Heald retain the seat he has held since 1992. He features in the ‘My Local Life’ section of this edition of The Listing opposite. He fought the seat against Kelly Green of Labour, Amy Finch of the Liberal Democrats and Tim Lee of the Green Party. The full result can be seen to the right. Sir Oliver Heald QC MP
For this month’s ‘My Local Life’ we caught up with the MP for North East Hertfordshire, Sir Oliver Heald QC MP. He has held his seat since 1992, an impressive 28 years. Here is what he had to say: Where do you live and how long have you lived there? I have lived in Royston since 1981 What’s your favourite local place to eat? It would be wrong for me to single out one of the many excellent eateries we have in Royston, but I do live near the Old Bull Inn and particularly enjoy their breakfasts. What is your favourite Royston experience? I have attended the Rotary Club Kite Festival over many years and have watched it grow from humble beginnings to a summer fixture on the Heath. I also enjoy the May Fayre. What is your favourite way to spend a Saturday? I often have constituency meetings and visits on Saturdays but otherwise I like to see family and friends and occasionally being able to watch my football team, Reading, as I grew up there. What is your favourite place in the world? North East Hertfordshire, of course, but Christine and I go every year to the small town of Anghiari in Italy where she sings with her choir. We have made many friends there over the years. What makes you happy? Feeling that I am doing my job effectively. What is your greatest fear? That Reading will not continue their current healthy run in the Championship and go back to last season’s relegation battle.
What is the most challenging aspect of your position? I sometimes have to explain to constituents that MPs cannot solve all their problems, although I always try to help. Which four people would you invite to dinner? Peter Crouch, footballer and blogger; Renee Zellweger, favourite actress and seems to have a sense of humour; Michael Ball, amusing and could give us a song; and Twiggy, a long-time favourite! What is your proudest moment? Being knighted by the Queen. It was a very special occasion. Friends of Chishill Windmill As we approach the end of the year, we thought you’d like an update on what we have achieved in the year and what we are planning for 2020 and beyond. 2019 has been a truly significant year in the history of Chishill Windmill. Firstly, it marked the bicentenary of the fabrication of this particular mill. There had been windmills on the site for centuries before but this one was built in 1819. Then, of course, we have the success of the restoration and the ‘Re-opening Day’ celebrations of 8th June. We also had the hedge pruned hard so that it can be trained to a more interesting boundary and currently the mill shines in all its glory from the hilltop. Sadly, work on the mill is not yet complete as the tail drive mechanism is only slowly coming together. Our millwright, Bill Griffiths, has done a superb job on the restoration but, as his reputation spreads, he is much in demand and is currently making the smock mill at Drinkstone, Suffolk, watertight for the winter. Bill is sharing his time with our job so we are progressing but it will be Spring before we see the mill turning itself to wind. On the administrative front, we are awaiting confirmation of our change of status to a Charitable Incorporated Organisation (CIO). Currently we are both a Limited Company, reporting to Companies House, and a Charity reporting to the Charity Commission. CIO status will cover the legal aspects of trading, together with Gift Aid eligibility and require only much simpler financial accounting. We expect to see the conclusion of this move shortly. The Trustees are currently constructing a business plan for the ongoing running and maintenance of both the building and the overall site. We’re sure that everyone appreciates that the windmill does not lend itself to hire as a venue or other such use to yield income, so we have to seek regular donation and fundraising to keep the old beauty in fine fettle.
We also think it sensible to start building a ’sinking fund’ for the inevitable big expenses that will come along. As well as ongoing maintenance, there are, of course, potential developments that could be embarked upon: the internal machinery is virtually complete so a project to remake sail shutters and refurbish the running gear might see the mill grinding grain once more; maybe an area of the adjacent field might be purchased to allow the development of supporting enterprises and much needed car parking. Who knows? What is sure is that we need some younger folk with enthusiasm to take on such ventures - with an average age of 70, and all of us eligible for a bus pass, the current committee might find another long-term project a little daunting! Most of all, we should like to thank you for being a ‘Friend’. We are delighted at the continued interest in the windmill and look forward to telling everyone of further milestones as we pass them. Valentine’s Day Biscuits Hello my fellow foodies and welcome to February’s edition of The Listing This month I thought I might share with you a recipe for Valentine day biscuits. I like to think of these as the romantic “Jammie Dodger” of the biscuit world. These are very easy to make and with it being half term you could even get the kids involved with making a batch; although attention should be paid when it comes to handling the cooked biscuits as the jam is piping hot! Valentine’s Day Biscuits 225g plain flour 180g butter at room temperature 85g caster sugar 1 egg from happy and healthy free running hens 5 drops of vanilla essence Approximately 3 tbsp of strawberry or mixed fruit jam Icing sugar to dust before serving. So, let’s begin by rubbing in the butter and the flour together until the mix resembles fine breadcrumbs in texture, then stir in the sugar. Next, add the egg and the vanilla and work until the mixture comes together to form a dough like consistency. All the above can be done in a food processor - just take care not to over mix as the dough will become too soft to handle and the finished biscuits will be tough in texture rather than light and crumbly. At this stage I like to pop the dough into the fridge to firm up a little for 30 minutes or so.
roll the dough between two layers of grease proof paper to prevent sticking and the excessive use of flour. Cut out even numbers of hearts, place half of them into the baking sheet, and then gently spread a thin layer of jam on top of each biscuit. Don’t be too generous, you are looking to just ‘colour’ the top. Next, from the remaining half of the biscuits, cut away a small heart shape and gently place onto the jam topped other half. You may choose to pop an extra drop of jam into the ‘cut away’ hole but don’t go too mad as jam bubbles when it cooks and will ruin the neat look of your biscuits. Bake the biscuits in the oven for approximately 15-20 minutes until they are cooked but still retain their pale colour. Leave to cool before removing from the baking sheet and lightly dust with icing sugar before you serve. Until next time my fellow foodies...

As part of the Herts 2020 Year of Culture, the Royston Community Network, which is made up of a group of 28 local voluntary groups and Charities, will be discussing and looking at developing and encouraging the skills development of volunteers on Wednesday 12th February at 10.30am at the Coombes Community Centre. Volunteer Skills development is one of the monthly themes suggested by the leaders of this county-wide initiative, the Hertfordshire Association of Cultural Officers. The Royston Community Network, which meets three times a year, is proud to be a partner of Herts 2020 Year of Culture and looks forward to being a participating member of this excellent initiative. How To Use Plants... Softening Extensions by Melbourn garden designer, Richard Arnott
A well thought out use of plants will bring a space to life. To engage with a space throughout the changing seasons is such a basic human instinct and something we all need to make more time for in our busy lives. The positive effect of green space on our mental health, wellbeing and happiness is well documented but it should be a priority. Whether it is going for a walk-through woodland or tending your own garden, the act of being in nature is certainly good for us. Many of us are now choosing to improve our living spaces through extending and developing our properties but spare a thought for the effect that this has on the outdoor space. Here are a few things to be thinking about to help soften the effect of building work in the garden. Transition is a great way to create cohesion from a new extension out into the garden. This can take the form of the floor material matching inside and outside to give a seamless flow out into the garden. There is no excuse to have paving finishing abruptly up against the house. To have a gravel trap at the foot of the bricks or render is somewhat better, but why not plan some planting pockets to help anchor everything and create a more deliberate effect. This could take the form of leaving out some slabs for planting a Wisteria for example if you have a south facing wall or it could be as simple as planting a row of lavenders to soften the transition of materials. We often forget to make the house look pretty as the focus can be out into the garden but views back at the house are important to consider too. Transparent planting is another awesome way of making us engage with planting. With the current trends of large windows and bifold doors clever planting can make you feel like you are sitting in the planting from the comfort of your armchair. I love to blend grasses such as Calamagrostis ‘Karl Foerster’, Sporobolus heterolepsis ‘Weinheim’ or Miscanthus sinensis ‘Kleine Fontaine’ with hardy perennials such as Gaura lindheimeri ‘Whirling Butterfies’, Sanguisorba officinalis and Lythrum salicaria ‘Feuerkerze’, to name just a few. This flouncy flowery blend of grasses and transparent hardy perennials is a great way to bring flowers into the garden and is more stimulating on the eye than a collection of shrubs. Delineation of space is very important regardless of the size of your garden. This does not need to take the form of tall hedges of Yew or Hornbeam that will undoubtedly reduce the light levels closer to the house. I like to delineate space using box hedging that can be clipped to keep it a low hedge around knee high. Typically, I would look to use this to frame an entrance or exit from an area such as a patio or as an edging plant with shrubs and flowers beyond. It can be important to choose a box alternative in areas that
have experienced box blight and for this I would recommend Ilex crenata ‘Caroline Upright’ as a good alternative with a very similar effect. Focal points are a good way to draw the eye into a particular area of the garden. It could be that you are having to steer the eye away from a neighbour’s extension where previously the view was more pleasing. A well-positioned specimen tree such as a multi stemmed Prunus serrula with its gorgeous mahogony smooth bark or a stunning Liquidamber styraciflua ‘Worplesdon’ with its pretty star shaped leaves and stunning autumn colour would do the trick. This can also be achieved to good effect with a water feature or sculpture too. Screening of unsightly views or simply for privacy in the garden is becoming ever more popular. I love to use pleached hornbeams which are essentially a hedge on stilts. Typically, I use trees with a clear stem 1.8 metres with the trained crown above. There are many varieties of trees that have been trained in this way and I am keen to include a row of pleached crab apples in a garden in the near future. If you are thinking of making changes to your garden this year why not plan over the winter to implement in the spring and to enjoy this summer!

Royston Leisure Centre Ditches Blue and Goes Green!
As part of ongoing efforts to reduce single use plastics in North Herts, Royston Leisure Centre is ditching blue plastic overshoes at its swimming pool and asking customers to either go barefoot or wear indoor flip flops. The initiative will save almost 780kg of plastic waste in North Hertfordshire each year. Alongside this, in a bid to reduce the use of single use plastic cups and bottles, a drinking water fountain has also been installed at the Leisure Centre. Royton Leisure Centre, managed by Stevenage Leisure Limited, is the first of the leisure centres in North Herts to ditch the blue shoes, with Hitchin Swimming Centre and North Herts Leisure Centre in Letchworth planning to follow suit early next year. www.sll.co.uk

Museum Musings: Healthy Mind and Body We’ve been working with the wonderful team at BEEE Creative who run dance workshops in the Museum.
One group they run is designed for adults who want a gentle physical and mental workout. Each session takes place in the museum. It’s a totally different experience than a gym as you’re exercising surrounded by Royston’s local history. Carrie, the group leader, plays a great selection of music to get moving to. If you need to take a break or do the workout sitting down, that’s absolutely fine. You don’t need to commit to coming every week, just drop in when you can and why not bring a friend or two?
