Roysia Women’s Club

What a lovely start to 2020 we had catching up after the Christmas holiday with a social at our first meeting. Our other January meetings included the following speakers: Bob Harding-Jones came to speak about ‘Laughter in the Village’, a highly amusing account of stories from village life. Steve Leicester was our second speaker who told us about the ‘Titanic’ and how she was struck by an iceberg on her maiden voyage in the North Atlantic Ocean. Both speakers made welcome return visits to the club and gave highly entertaining and interesting talks.

Our January meeting was entitled Pomp & Circumstance, by Chloe Cockerill. She began by telling our fascinated audience that Pomp and Circumstance meant English Ceremonial, but would highlight Coronations, Jubilees and Maundy Service. This Service historically took place in Westminster Abbey, but when Elizabeth ll came to the throne, she distributed the money in a different place each year. The Maundy coins were minted specifically for the occasion and recipients received a coin for each year of the Queen’s age.

Our next meeting will be on 6th February, 2020 at 8pm, when the subject will be, “4 Inspirational Women” by Damien Odell. Admission is £2, everyone welcome. Meetings are held in The Heritage Hall, Town Hall on the first Thursday of the month.

Royston WI PM Ladies, if you would like to increase your circle of friends and interests our Women’s Institute Group is an excellent place to do so. We enjoy many social activities, interesting talks and appreciate being part of one of the most influential organisations in the nation. disabilities and ages and membership is £15.00 per year which gives access to outings and events more locally throughout the year. We had a number of very successful outings and events during 2019 counting among them a trip to Harry Potter World and Paradise Wildlife Park. We’re currently putting together our programme for 2020.

A cancelled speaker led to quick thinking by the committee to save the afternoon. A member gave a “standby” talk on the History of the Peace Rose which was informative and entertaining. The rose was in development in 1939 when the commercial site in the South of France was ordered to be dug up for food growing. The 49 delegates to a conference in 1945 of the newly formed UN were given stock to take back to their respective countries, thus the rose was now named Peace. We look forward to celebrating the Guild’s birthday at our next meeting on 4th February, do come to join us. For further information contact Pauline 01763 221314

Spotlight On... We are an independent social walking group that goes for an amble across Therfield Heath every Wednesday at 1.30pm from the Heath Café, Royston. We are a friendly, welcoming, positively inclusive and non-cliquey group and welcome children, buggies and dogs; the walks are free. In the last 17 months we’ve had over 150 different people walk with us but there is room for many more so if you fancy a leisurely walk, a chat and a brew afterwards please feel free to join us. At the end of December we held our Christmas lunch at the Heath Café and had 60 people in attendance. This year we decided to raise funds for a charity and chose Medical Detection Dogs as the one we wanted to support. Our raffle raised enough funds to sponsor two puppies through their first year of training as detection or alert dogs.

Not everyone can or wants to walk but might enjoy the social element so if you just want a chat and a brew we are normally back from the walk around 2.15pm and you could join us then. During 2020 we will be investigating new options, a non-walking group, a shorter walk and more locations for our walks. If any of these might of interest or are something you could help us with please get in touch. Medical Detection Dogs trains dogs to detect the odour of human disease. The Bio-Detection Dogs are trained to find the odour of diseases, such as cancer, in samples such as urine, breath and swabs. The Medical Alert Assistance Dogs are trained to detect minute changes in an individual’s personal odour triggered by their disease and alert them to an impending medical event.

Museum Musings: Healthy Mind and Body We’ve been working with the wonderful team at BEEE Creative who run dance workshops in the Museum.

One group they run is designed for adults who want a gentle physical and mental workout. Each session takes place in the museum. It’s a totally different experience than a gym as you’re exercising surrounded by Royston’s local history. Carrie, the group leader, plays a great selection of music to get moving to. If you need to take a break or do the workout sitting down, that’s absolutely fine. You don’t need to commit to coming every week, just drop in when you can and why not bring a friend or two? These sessions run when the museum is closed to visitors so the group have the museum all to themselves. It’s a great way to experience some quiet time, too. Museums are no longer just places to see objects. We are working towards being inclusive and providing more activities that support our community.

For more information on Royston Health Walks contact Richard on 01763 852769 or email roystonhealthwalks@btinternet.com

mELBOURN tIMEBANK

We live in a great area with a real community spirit and we want to continue to support that. What’s even better is that the sessions are free and there’s a chance afterwards for you to chat with the group over tea or coffee. Sessions run most Fridays at the Museum from 11.15am - 12pm. Check out our website for dates and to book.

For more about Carrie and BEEE Creative, head to www.beee-creative.co.uk or call 07971 171061 If you run a group for adults and you think these dance workshops might interest them, please let us know. We can provide you with leaflets to hand out.

Is your New Year’s resolution to do a good deed, to help others, make more effort to get to know your neighbours or do more for your community? If so, you can achieve all of that by joining the Melbourn Timebank! The Timebank is growing steadily; we now have members from Royston, Meldreth, Shepreth and Foxton too. Over 830 hours have been exchanged in the Timebank’s first year. We hold regular social events, a weekly Coffee Morning on a Thursday from 10am–12pm, either in The Hub or Moorland Court, a fortnightly Art and Craft club that runs in the pavilion on a Wednesday afternoon from 1.30 – 4.30 pm and a monthly Evening Social/ Timebank Games Night at The Black Horse (all these location are in Melbourn). Non-members are always very welcome to come to any of these events to learn more about Timebanking and meet other members. Timebanking is a way for local people to come together and help each other by exchanging knowledge, help and skills. Everyone has something to offer a Timebank from making a cake, picking up a prescription, walking

their dog, doing some gardening, visiting someone for a cup of tea, welcoming new residents to the village - whatever you do will make a difference to the person that needs your help. You get an hour’s time credit which you can use to get something back. That may be help with your mobile/tablet, learning how to hem a skirt, someone picking up a loaf of bread, or gaining some new skills. Everyone’s time is equal, so one hour of my time is equal to one hour of your time, irrespective of whatever we choose to exchange However, it’s not just about giving and receiving. Timebanking is also about bringing people together to build a stronger, safer and happier community. The exchanges can go on and on, as do the new friendships, connections and networks that are made. Members feel less isolated and more supported in their own community. For more information or to join us, please contact Cath by calling 07483 176929 or 01763 263303 Option 3 or via email at

Out & About... Toad In A Hole

It may be February – but Panto season isn’t yet behind us, at least not in Barkway. A troupe of seasoned local thespians are getting ready to present their 28th annual pantomime, Toad in a Hole. As you might guess, the show is inspired by Kenneth Grahame’s Wind in the Willows. Full of colour, music and laughs, it features many of the well-loved characters from that tale, alongside others dreamed up by the Barkway Players’ in-house creative team. Founder member and music director Edwin Kilby tells us that a Wind in the Willows-based show has been an ambition among the Barkway Players for some time. “We always write our own material and try to create something different. The characters of Toad, Ratty and the friends are much-loved in English literature, and we’ve thought for some time that we could make a great pantomime using them, but we needed a suitably original storyline.

This year our scriptwriting team have come up with a great idea which we think the audience will love.” The Barkway Pantomime has become something of a community tradition. The present series has continued without a break since 1993. The event raises money to help support Barkway Village Hall, a registered charity. This year the Hall has invested heavily in new LED stage lighting, and the proceeds will help pay for it. Edwin commented: “Lifelong friendships have been made through the Barkway Players. And we introduce new faces every year. People love working on the panto, especially during what can be the dull month of January, when it all really comes together.” New members are always welcome and you don’t have to live in Barkway to take part. More information is available on the Barkway Players’ website and Facebook page, or you could email him at enquiries@barkwayplayers.org.uk.

Toad in a Hole will be performed at Barkway Village Hall, 4 Cambridge Road, Barkway, SG8 8BS on: Friday 7th February at 8pm Saturday 8th February at 2pm Saturday 8th February at 8pm Tickets are available over the phone on 01763 797101 or online via www.barkwayplayers.org.uk

My Local Life... Sir Oliver Heald QC MP

What is your greatest fear? That Reading will not continue their current healthy run in the Championship and go back to last season’s relegation battle.

For this month’s ‘My Local Life’ we caught up with the MP for North East Hertfordshire, Sir Oliver Heald QC MP. He has held his seat since 1992, an impressive 28 years. Here is what he had to say:

What is the most challenging aspect of your position?

Where do you live and how long have you lived there?

I sometimes have to explain to constituents that MPs cannot solve all their problems, although I always try to help.

I have lived in Royston since 1981 What’s your favourite local place to eat?

Which four people would you invite to dinner?

It would be wrong for me to single out one of the many excellent eateries we have in Royston, but I do live near the Old Bull Inn and particularly enjoy their breakfasts.

Peter Crouch, footballer and blogger; Renee Zellweger, favourite actress and seems to have a sense of humour; Michael Ball, amusing and could give us a song; and Twiggy, a long-time favourite!

What is your favourite Royston experience? I have attended the Rotary Club Kite Festival over many years and have watched it grow from humble beginnings to a summer fixture on the Heath. I also enjoy the May Fayre. What is your favourite way to spend a Saturday? I often have constituency meetings and visits on Saturdays but otherwise I like to see family and friends and occasionally being able to watch my football team, Reading, as I grew up there.

What is your proudest moment? What is your favourite place in the world?

Being knighted by the Queen. It was a very special occasion.

North East Hertfordshire, of course, but Christine and I go every year to the small town of Anghiari in Italy where she sings with her choir. We have made many friends there over the years.

To get in touch with Sir Oliver Heald, call 01462 486074 or email him at oliver.heald.mp@parliament.uk

What makes you happy? Feeling that I am doing my job effectively.

Local Members of Parliament: who’s In, Who’s Out? By Tom Fox

The Listing delivers to two different parliamentary constituencies; North East Hertfordshire which covers Royston and the villages to the south of the town, and South Cambridgeshire, covering villages north of the A505 bypass. 2019 saw Heidi Allen step down as the MP for South Cambridgeshire after a colourful year. She began the year as a Conservative but resigned from the party in February to join the newly created Change UK. After a disappointing run in the European Elections, Allen quit Change UK too, and became an independent. The final twist in the story came in October when she revealed that she would initially stand as the Liberal Democrat candidate in South Cambridgeshire at the next election but decided later on in the month to take a step back from politics all together, after she suffered what she called “utterly dehumanising” abuse and was

“exhausted” by the “nastiness and intimidation” she had faced. With Heidi Allen stepping down, the Liberal Democrats stood Ian Sollom as their candidate to fight the December 12th General Election, the Conservatives stood Anthony Browne and Labour stood Dan Greef. Congratulations to Anthony Browne for winning the seat. For North East Hertfordshire, the election saw Royston-resident Sir Oliver Heald retain the seat he has held since 1992. He features in the ‘My Local Life’ section of this edition of The Listing (see above). He fought the seat against Kelly Green of Labour, Amy Finch of the Liberal Democrats and Tim Lee of the Green Party. Well done to all those who stood for election and congratulations to the winners! Contact details for both Sir Oliver Heald and Anthony Browne can be found in our ‘Useful Numbers’ section oh page 29.

Healthy Hub Coming to North Herts A new health and wellbeing service delivered by North Hertfordshire District Council was launched in January. The Healthy Hub is a one stop shop where you can access health services, support and advice all in one place, making it easier to get help with a range of physical and mental health issues. Whether it’s stop smoking services, help to lose weight, mental health support, encouragement to get more active or even advice on how to cut down on your drinking - your Healthy Hub can help you. From 13th January you can access services for the hub by phone on 01462 474111 or by emailing: healthyhub@north-herts.gov.uk. In March, a pop up hub will launch at dedicated local venues in the towns and villages across the district to enable as many people as possible to attend appointments. Bookable appointments will be available with a health

From Tallulah’s Kitchen Valentine’s Day Biscuits Hello my fellow foodies and welcome to February’s edition of The Listing This month I thought I might share with you a recipe for Valentine’s day biscuits. I like to think of these as the romantic “Jammie Dodger” of the biscuit world. These are very easy to make and with it being half term you could even get the kids involved with making a batch; although attention should be paid when it comes to handling the cooked biscuits as the jam is piping hot!

Valentine’s Day Biscuits 225g plain flour 180g butter at room temperature 85g caster sugar 1 egg from happy and healthy free running hens 5 drops of vanilla essence Approximately 3 tbsp of strawberry or mixed fruit jam Icing sugar to dust before serving. So, let’s begin by rubbing in the butter and the flour together until the mix resembles fine breadcrumbs in texture,

then stir in the sugar. Next, add the egg and the vanilla and work until the mixture comes together to form a dough like consistency. All the above can be done in a food processor - just take care not to over mix as the dough will become too soft to handle and the finished biscuits will be tough in texture rather than light and crumbly. At this stage I like to pop the dough into the fridge to firm up a little for 30 minutes or so.

go too mad as jam bubbles when it cooks and will ruin the neat look of your biscuits.

When you are ready, pop on the oven to 160°C and prepare to roll out and cut the biscuits. As this is a very ‘short’ mix, I find that minimum handling is essential to the successful shaping of these biscuits. With the dough nice and cold, cut and place the biscuits straight onto the baking sheet. One final tip; I roll the dough between two layers of grease proof paper to prevent sticking and the excessive use of flour. Cut out even numbers of hearts, place half of them into the baking sheet, and then gently spread a thin layer of jam on top of each biscuit. Don’t be too generous, you are looking to just ‘colour’ the top. Next, from the remaining half of the biscuits, cut away a small heart shape and gently place onto the jam topped other half. You may choose to pop an extra drop of jam into the ‘cut away’ hole but don’t

Talullah Le Fey

Bake the biscuits in the oven for approximately 15-20 minutes until they are cooked but still retain their pale colour. Leave to cool before removing from the baking sheet and lightly dust with icing sugar before you serve. Until next time my fellow foodies...

Cream of ROyston

yres Wedding Fa

Once you know your son or daughter is getting married, the wedding becomes the perfect excuse you need for dressing up. Bride aside, all eyes will be on the mums. Cream of Royston has been trading in Royston for 44 years and is predominantly a special occasion store. The extensive stock on two floors is colour co-ordinated for ease of selection. Everything is available from outfits (sizes 6-24) to shoes and bags, hats, fascinators and lingerie. Brands stocked include Condici, John Charles, Ispirato and Ann Balon. Less formalwear from brands such as Isabella, Frank Lyman and Gina Bacconi are ideal for a day at the races, wedding abroad or for guests at a wedding. Mothers usually purchase their outfits four to six months before the event and customers are given the option to change it if they see something they prefer later, but they rarely do. Once everything gels and you have that wow factor, you have found the outfit. It is usual for mothers to co-ordinate with the wedding party. Many brides have a colour scheme for bridesmaids and a men’s suit, and it is a good idea to either blend or contrast with this. It

is very important to be comfortable with what you are wearing. A shift dress with a jacket is always a popular choice because you can take the jacket off in the evening when things warm up. An elegant and slightly understated look always works, and a hat can complement the outfit too. They have to be happy with the final look. Whilst the outfit must be perfect for the occasion, it is important to have the correct lingerie underneath too as it can alter the whole look of a garment. Cream has a well-stocked lingerie department which can be tried alongside the outfit. A free alteration service is available on all full-priced outfits bought in store, completed up to a month before the event to ensure a perfect fit. Shoes and bags are made in different heel heights in Spain from beautiful leathers and Rainbow Club can be dyed to match the outfit. Feel free to pop in or book an appointment. The sale shop Occasions for Less, located adjacent to Cream, offers mother’s of the bride shoes, bags and hats from previous seasons all at fantastic prices.

Best Man Speech - Dream or Nightmare?

1.startA tomonth before the wedding, practice feeling confident. Close your eyes and picture an occasion when you felt really confident. Make the picture bright and colourful. When you are experiencing that confident feeling as strongly as possible, press the tips of your thumb and first finger together firmly. This is your confidence anchor.

2.

In the week before the wedding, before you go to sleep every night, imagine yourself making a brilliant speech. See yourself standing confidently, speaking easily, the smiling faces in front of you. Hear them laughing at your jokes and clapping as you finish. Enjoy that good feeling of a job well done. Press the tips of your thumb and first finger together to ‘fire’ your confidence anchor.

3. Just before you stand up to make the speech, take a few

moments to concentrate on your breathing. Breathe down into your stomach and make each out-breath slightly longer than the in-breath. This will trigger

relaxation. When you stand up, plant your feet firmly hip distance apart and stand in your confident posture. Fire your confidence anchor.

4. 5.

Take plenty of sips of water. This will keep your mouth moist and give you a chance to look at your notes

6.

At the beginning of your speech, let your eyes go out of focus so that you can take in the whole room. Once you are feeling more confident, let your eyes focus on the people who are smiling and laughing - there will be plenty of them.

Pancake Day!

Tuesday 22nd February is the date of Shrove Tuesday, commonly known to many as Pancake Day. Shrove Tuesday falls exactly 47 days before Easter Sunday and is the traditional feast day before the start of Lent on Ash Wednesday. It used to mark the last opportunity to use up eggs and fats before a long period of fasting. Pancakes are the perfect dish to put them to use! My favourite pancake recipe uses buckwheat, baking soda and buttermilk to create a thicker, fluffier pancake than the more common French Crêpe.

Whether you just want to learn a few basics, a bespoke choreographed first dance, or maybe a routine for all the bridesmaids, we can and have done it all! Lessons are taught by experienced professionals in the comfort of your own home, or in a dance studio if you prefer. Sessions start from just £45 and we are currently offering 20% off the first 20 bookings of 2020! 07772 323 435 www.thefirstdancecompany.co.uk jessica@thefirstdancecompany.co.uk

When couples step into my Royston kitchen for a wedding cake consultation I love to see the sparkle in their eyes as they talk about their big day. I really like to get to know them and their vision for their wedding. This starts with a pre wedding cake consultation questionnaire so I can gather some ideas before I meet them. Whilst they are sampling 4 different cake flavours, over a complimentary glass of bubbly, I sketch out a design for their cake. I keep refining it until we land on the design for their dream cake. I pride myself not only on my attention to detail but my flavours. From recipes that have been passed down through generations to fresh local ingredients. I love to hear the feedback that guests come back for an extra slice!

Valentine’s Day and the number 12 2020 is a leap year! The story of Valentine’s Day is a well known tale by now but there are still some fascinating facts unbeknownst to many people.

Many men will buy their other half a dozen red roses, but why this number?

In Ancient Greek mythology, the 12 Olympians are the principal gods of the pantheon, who were preceeded by 12 titans, and Hercules carried out 12 labours.

In Christianity, there were 12 disciples. Ishmael - the first born The number 12 holds significance son of Abraham - has 12 sons and Abraham’s grandson, Jacob, also across culture and history and signifies completeness. There are has 12 sons. 12 months of the year, 12 signs of The prominence of 12 in history the zodiac and it takes 12 years is clear. How much you should for a full cycle of Jupiter. spend on 12 roses for your partner - that is not so clear.

2020 is a leap year, meaning there is an extra day in February! It is done to synchronise our Gregorian calendars with the solar year, which is 365 days, 5 hours and nearly 49 minutes long. Without leap years, our calendar would be off by approximately 24 days after just 100 years. 29th February is also recognised as the day for women to propose to their other halves if they feel they need to take control. According to Irish legend, St Brigid struck a deal with St Patrick to allow women to propse to men rather than just the other way round. Here at The Listing, we care not so much about who instigates the proposal but the mere action itself. If you’re short of money, feeling spontaneous and having a highly forgiving partner, Poundland are selling engagement rings for just £1. As they say, ‘take the leap... because they might never get round to it’.

Monthly Reads by Tom Automation has and will continue to change our lives in ways we can’t even begin to imagine. The implementation of these technologies has had severe consequences according to Andrew Yang’s ‘The War on Normal People’. Yang, a Democratic candidate in the upcoming US Presidential Election, paints a grim picture of America’s future. There are record numbers of: addiction, suicide, disability claimants, divorce and those leaving the workforce for good. Yang attributes a lot of this to automation and the rise of AI.

In what Yang calls the Fourth Industrial Revolution, professions once seen as untouchable will soon be able to be done more effectively by a machine. His solution to the problem is pegged as revolutionary by some, and utterly ridiculous by others.

Friends of Chishill Windmill As we approach the end of the year, we thought you’d like an update on what we have achieved in the year and what we are planning for 2020 and beyond.

2019 has been a truly significant year in the history of Chishill Windmill. Firstly, it marked the bicentenary of the fabrication of this particular mill. There had been windmills on the site for centuries before but this one was built in 1819. Then, of course, we have the success of the restoration and the ‘Re-opening Day’ celebrations of 8th June. We also had the hedge pruned hard so that it can be trained to a more interesting boundary and currently the mill shines in all its glory from the hilltop. Sadly, work on the mill is not yet complete as the tail drive mechanism is only slowly coming together. Our millwright, Bill Griffiths, has done a superb job on the restoration but, as his reputation spreads, he is much in demand and is currently making the smock mill at Drinkstone, Suffolk, watertight for the winter. Bill is sharing his time with our job so we are progressing but it will be Spring before we see the mill turning itself to wind. On the administrative front, we are awaiting confirmation of our change of status to a Charitable Incorporated

Organisation (CIO). Currently we are both a Limited Company, reporting to Companies House, and a Charity reporting to the Charity Commission. CIO status will cover the legal aspects of trading, together with Gift Aid eligibility and require only much simpler financial accounting. We expect to see the conclusion of this move shortly. The Trustees are currently constructing a business plan for the ongoing running and maintenance of both the building and the overall site. We’re sure that everyone appreciates that the windmill does not lend itself to hire as a venue or other such use to yield income, so we have to seek regular donation and fundraising to keep the old beauty in fine fettle. We also think it sensible to start building a ’sinking fund’ for the inevitable big expenses that will come along. As well as ongoing maintenance, there are, of course, potential developments that could be embarked upon: the internal machinery is virtually complete so a project to remake sail shutters and refurbish the running gear might see the mill grinding grain once more; maybe an area of the adjacent field might be purchased to allow the development of supporting enterprises and much

needed car parking. Who knows? What is sure is that we need some younger folk with enthusiasm to take on such ventures - with an average age of 70, and all of us eligible for a bus pass, the current committee might find another long-term project a little daunting! Most of all, we should like to thank you for being a ‘Friend’. We are delighted at the continued interest in the windmill and look forward to telling everyone of further milestones as we pass them. Don’t forget that we are always pleased to show you round the mill if you would like. For more information, please visit www.greatchishillwindmill.com

During the last couple of months, a number of things have been occurring behind the scenes in order to move forward the re-instatement of our beautiful church.

In the meantime, we are pleased to report that there has been significant interest in our proposed Sponsor a Chair Scheme as well as offers to acquire some of the old pews.

Tenders for the high-level work on the building to initially repair the roof were received, following which work will be commencing resulting in the scaffolding and covering being removed along the nave of the church.

All this, together with the continued receipt of donations, - now totalling over £42,000 provides us with great optimism for the future.

To keep up to date with progress and what is going on at the church We are also at an advanced stage please visit our website at in determining the re-ordering of www.roystonparishchurch.org.uk the church as architects’ plans are finalised prior to seeking approval from the diocese for the work to be commenced. A shortlist of seating options to replace the pews has been drawn up and we hope to make a final decision shortly. The decision has been taken to replace the current damaged pipe organ with a digital one. Steps are now in hand to determine the best option for the current and future needs of church music at St John’s. We hope to provide further details on each of these in further updates during the year.

Richard’s Monthly Tip

The best way to avoid a monotonous workout routine is to exercise with someone. You are less likely to skip your workout and more likely to push yourself. Check out personal trainers in your area for motivation or ask the person you always run next to on the treadmill if you can train together.

Check their weight regularly, and make sure you are giving them the right amount and type of food for their lifestyle.

More frequently encountered in humans, obesity is also encountered in pets. It’s a condition in which the body contains too much fat due to an excess of food, or lack of proper exercise or (much less commonly) a metabolic condition such as hypothyroidism. Many owners feel feeding their pet is a way to show their love for them, but truly an overweight pet is predisposed to die earlier, as they could have diabetes, osteoarthritis and other inflammatory conditions or even cancer.
