GET INVOLVED WITH ROYSTON ARTS FESTIVAL 2014 THE box office for this year’s Creative Royston: Royston Arts Festival in now open – and early bird tickets to events are available at a reduced price until 31st August. Highlights include an in-conversation event with Alison Balsom, the multi-award winning trumpet player whose career began in Royston (kids-go-free tickets available online); an adult-orientated Comedy Night with Iain Stirling and Howard Read; and a full workshop programme ranging from learning to face-paint to writing for magazines, playing a ukulele to drawing manga. Places are expected to go fast. Creative Royston chairman Graham Palmer said: “There’s lots to do and lots to get hands-on with.” This year there are two independent competitions which will be judged before the festival: snap a hero or villain for Royston Photographic Society or supply an artwork to the Royston Fringe for the opportunity for a chance to win a prize and have your work exhibited. (Entry details are on the festival website). The market manager is running the busking slot (27th September) this year. Any interested buskers should email him at markets@ roystontowncouncil.gov.uk
Festival organisers are also looking for suitable sites to display ceramic tiles depicting some of Royston’s heroes and villains. These tiles will form part of a new permanent art trail. Anyone who would like to offer to display a single 15cm tile on an outside wall that can be easily seen from a footpath should contact Graham Palmer at chair@roystonartsfestival.org The first Saturday of the festival will see the launch of an exciting new ‘First Access’ programme of free weekly group music tuition (instruments provided!). All Year 4 children will have the chance to learn a woodwind, brass or percussion instrument for two terms at Royston Music School. This programme is run by Hertfordshire Music Service and promoted by Creative Royston. Parents of Year 4 children who might be interested should register in advance. Full details at www.hertsmusicservice.org.uk/royston Volunteers are needed during the festival to help at events and details are available on the festival website. Alternatively, contact the volunteer co-ordinator, Tina Filby: volunteers@roystonartsfestival.org
Royston Arts Festival (supported by Johnson Matthey plc) runs between 19th-28th September 2014. The full listing and tickets are available on the website at www.roystonartsfestival.org, twitter.com/royartsfest, facebook.com/roystonartsfestival and look out for the September issue of The Listing with full details.

OUT & ABOUT Royston Charity Kite Festival
Our cover image this month is inspired by the annual Kite Festival organised by the Rotary Club of Royston and held on the sloping grassland of the Heath. This year’s event promises to be just as successful as previous years with the colour and fun of the kites acting as a backdrop to stalls, competitions, a fun fair, workshops, food & drink and so much more! From 10.30am - 4.30pm there will be attractions and entertainment for all the family. But that is not all, for although a day full of fun is promised the Rotary Club have a more serious aim. It hopes to raise money for the charity Alzheimer’s Research UK whish is the UK’s leading dementia research charity. It specialises in funding world-class, pioneering projects at leading universities to find preventions, treatments and a cure for dementia.
SUNDAY 3RD AUGUST 2014
Since 1962, the Rotary Club of Royston has been working to serve the local community through events such as this, the May Fayre, Youth Speaks and Youth Makes Music. It also aims to address global problems of disease and poverty. Members are part of the international Rotary movement, with millions of members and thousands of clubs in countries worldwide. The Royston Club has around 40 men and women members, who live or work in the area and who are leaders in their profession or occupation. Meetings take place every Tuesday evening. There may be a speaker on a topic of interest. Other meetings are given over to discussing the business matters of the Club; and every so often, spouses and partners join the proceedings. So, come rain or shine, gales or zephyr breezes the Heath is the place to be on 3rd August to have some fun in the name of a very good cause.

Discover the Birds at RSPB Fowlmere
Fowlmere’s reedbeds and pools are fed by natural chalk springs, and a chalk stream runs through the reserve. Special birds include kingfishers, water rails, and nine species of warblers, including sedge warblers, reed warblers and grasshopper warblers. Starlings, thrushes and buntings, including corn buntings, roost on the reserve in the winter. The nature trail is partly wheelchair and pushchair accessible, as are two of the three hides. Why not watch dragonflies buzzing around after their small insect prey, look out for butterflies feeding on flowers and basking in the sunshine or look for fish - including brown trout - in the chalk stream?

PET CARE
AUGUST 14 • ISSUE 108
New Business Launch
WALKIES GETS A MAKE OVER! On the Leash is an animal care company which is dedicated to the welfare of animals. At On the Leash we pride ourselves in trying to change to animal care and the way in which the society views it. We view animals as family members who cannot express their feelings verbally and so we have taken it upon ourselves to try and translate. And so with this in mind we have tailored made products that help us care for your animals as individuals, these are “living documents”, which means they, like your pet are subject to change, and will grow with your pet. We will always treat your pet(s) with the same love, care and respect that you would and no matter what circumstances may arise, and no matter what length of time it has been, we be there for you and your pet. Our contracts are not time or money based. Our services are paid for when you use them and we charge what we need to perform our duties - nothing more. At On the Leash excellence is our priority and this is reflected in our approach to staff as well as our franchises. Although we are a family run
business that is not to suggest that family members do not go under the same amount of scrutiny, in fact it’s quite the contrary! We carry this high standard to every task undertaken and every thought process implemented, as there is nothing more personal than the care of a pet. So who are we? We are excited to be introduced to your family. We are the people who are more excited about going on a walk than your dog ever could be. And we are the people who will never tire of playing with a ball of wool. We are On the Leash and it is our pleasure to make your acquaintance!

HEAR ME ROAR!
Amba, Shepreth Wildlife Park’s resident tiger, celebrates her 16th birthday on 4th August at the annual Tiger Day event this Summer, organised by Shepreth Wildlife Conservation Charity. ‘Tiger Day’ which is in it’s 10th year running, has helped to raise both awareness and over £40,000 in funding to help save tigers in the wild, in aid of the tiger conservation charities: 21st Century Tiger and Wildlife Vets international. The event continues to attract visitors far and wide each year, all hoping to share a piece of the tiger cake! Yet again there is an astounding array of events including Cambridge United, AKA the Amber Army’s Josh Coulson and Ian Miller, who will be braving the tiger den to hide Amba’s meat for her, plus the Young Actors Company who will be on hand to entertain us with their performance of ‘Tigers in the Wild’, plus Mr Bean’s Magic Show and jungle bouncy castle. In addition, special guests the Cambridge Corncrakes with Josie Chambers on vocals will be entertaining the crowds with their melodic tunes, alongside ‘Ringo’ the Coati’s rendition of ‘Happy Birthday’, as well as an extra special pass the parcel around the tiger enclosure, face and nail painting, tiger balloons and cake, raffles, tiger tombolas, auctions and arts & crafts, “We are always overwhelmed with the incredible success this event affords each year, and very grateful to the super people who give up their day to work tirelessly raising funds and keep the fun in motion. We are amazed to see the high levels of visitors we receive on Tiger Day, proving that the tiger’s here are a really popular attraction and people really do care about their plight in the wild. We hope that Tiger Day 2014, next month will be just as successful, and we can raise the much needed funds to prevent this beautiful animal becoming extinct in the wild!’

the ad hoc cocktail club Long Island Iced Tea The long island iced tea is not one for the faint hearted. With a concoction of 5 different spirits, it definitely packs a punch... do not be fooled by its rather dull facade. This cocktail had its day in the early 1970s. FUNDRAISING FOR MACMILLAN
A new Macmillan fundraising group is being set up in Royston. Nicola Clark is appealing for volunteers from Royston and the surrounding area who would like to support Macmillan. Nicola has plans to help expand the existing very successful coffee morning events later this summer and hopefully will be able to involve some ‘handmade in Royston’ businesses! If you would like to get involved with fundraising event for this worthwhile charity, please contact Nicola Clark on 07889 866623 or nhclark@macmillan.org.uk
WI AM
At Royston WI AM’s June meeting Philip Ian Wright gave a very interesting and informative history of the hat trade. He spoke about his family link and how his Great Grandparents set up their factory in Luton in the 1880’s. He informed us how the expansion of the trade led to a third of the population in the town working in the hat factories. Today only a few people continue to work in the trade. At the end of the meeting members had the opportunity to try on some of the beautiful hats he had brought along. WIAM meets from 10am on the 2nd Wednesday of the month at the Market Hill Rooms, Royston. Visitors are always welcome, call Irene on 01763 249 455 for more information.
TOWNSWOMEN’S GUILD
We were transported to the glamorous world of Hollywood at our July meeting when Maggie Radcliffe gave us an interesting insight into the life and times of Marilyn Monroe. Using her many slides, Maggie described Marilyn’s personal life and how her career developed, leading eventually to her early death. There will not be a Guild meeting during August, but we return on 5th September, when we look forward to welcoming Geoff Evans once again. We meet monthly on the first Friday in Royston Town Hall, Room 11, 7 to 9.30 pm. If you would like to know more contact Pauline Gates on 01763 221314.

SAKS SHACK WINS THE DAY!
WINNING CARIBBEAN WINDOWS FROM SAKS. ALSO PICTURED: JANE’S HAIRDRESSERS, BEAUTIFUL BALLOONS AND THE GARDEN HOUSE HOSPICE SHOP
FIRST TREATMENT
50% OFF
Well done to the Royston Summer Rocks event, organised by retail organisation Royston Means Business, in the town centre in July, a superb event which showcased Royston as a vibrant town. The Listing walked round with Royston’s Mayor, Victoria Hulstrom-Allen, to meet the retailers who had dressed their shops up in a Caribbean theme. The uptake was superb this year with a total of 14 windows dressed for the day. It was particularly pleasing to see so many new businesses who’ve not been involved before joining in the fun. Well done to all the participants: • Ladds • Garden House Hospice Shop • Premier Travel • Mia Caro • Great Fit • G Miles • Cream • Beautiful Balloons • Jane’s Hairdressers • Days of Ashwell • Abbot Travel • Marshalls Estate Agents • Wonderful Things • and a special well done to winner Saks Hairdressers. The judges were particularly impressed with those windows that had incorporated the business’s product or service into the display. Great Fit, with their bikinis, Days of Ashwell with their cleverly crafted beach picnic complete with sandwiches and gingerbread men, and the Garden House Hospice Shop with their luminous coloured stock taking pride of place amongst the Caribbean accessories – all offering well thoughtout displays. Notable too were Beautiful Balloons, who went all out with a dazzling summertime window of colour, and even Dolly the Dog sporting a Caribbean style flower in her hair. There were even genuine Caribbean earrings being worn at G Miles Shoe Repairs! The overall winner was Saks Hairdressers, who cleverly created Saks Shack – a wooden beach bar Newmarket Road, complete with cocktail jug and accessories, the sea, Royston the sunshine in the window, real sand – and their best beach hair care products! Very well thought out Tel: 07771358363 Email: info@sweetholistics.co.uk and implemented. Rebecca Whitehead VTCT Level 3 Swedish Massage The Listing would like to extend a huge thank you to all those that took part and obviously has such fun SWEDISH MASSAGE doing so, and to the Mayor who gave up her time to FACIAL REJUVENATION judge the competition with us. SWEET HOLISTICS MASSAGE THERAPY
Sweet Holistics massage therapy opened its doors this year, and is owned and run by Rebecca Whitehead, a fully qualified massage therapist. The treatments on offer for clients are: Swedish massage, Seated acupressure massage, Facial rejuvenation massage and Reiki. Rebecca was inspired to train as a massage therapist after an injury to her knee caused from a skiing accident left her debilitated. She found massage to be a great comfort and an essential part of her recovery. Rebecca states, “Massage really helped me get back to full health both physically and mentally. I think that people can sometimes see massage just as a treat but with the stresses and pressures of today I really feel that it is an important way of maintaining a healthy, balanced life” Rebecca qualified as a Swedish massage therapist VTCT Level 3, in the City of Cambridge, and she is a member of ‘FHT’ the Federation of Holistic Therapists. Sweet Holistics massage therapy is set up in a private studio in Rebecca’s home in Newmarket Road, Royston, Hertfordshire. The room is light, warm and inviting, providing a welcoming and tranquil environment. Rebecca combines her high level of practice of Swedish massage with her career as a pastry chef, offering a service of wedding and celebration cakes as part of an extensive portfolio of sweet treats. She also gives out loyalty cards to her massage clients that include discounts on treatments and boxed cupcakes for the client to enjoy after their treatment. This is how “Sweet” Holistics got its name. Sweet Holistics Massage Therapy, www.sweetholistics.co.uk 07771 358363, info@sweetholistics.co.uk

n o t s y o r n i e d SPOTLIGHT ON... handma FOWLMERE
Fowlmere is a very picturesque South Cambridgeshire village. It boasts a handsome church and is bursting with history having been visited by Samuel Pepys in 1660 and hosted the RAF during the world wars. An interesting memorial well stands opposite the war memorial. It still has two traditional pubs - The Chequers (see our review in the Eats, Drinks & Leisure section) and The Queens Head. The Swan now hosts Sachins Indian Restaurant. A bustling farmers market is held once a month (sadly not in August but returning on 13th September). The market is now in its fourth year and thriving. Go along and treat yourself to cakes, cheeses, award winning pies, chutneys, pickles, sauces and beef to name but a few of the delicious delights available. On the outskirts of the village is RSPB Fowlmere which is a beautifully peaceful place to walk and explore. There are dragon flies buzzing, butterflies fluttering and trout to tickle as well as historical watercress beds. On Friday 29th August, for the fourth year the village will play host to Illyria Open Air Touring Theatre. Illyria was created in 1991, and ever since has delighted audiences the length and breadth of the UK, and in the Netherlands, Germany, Switzerland, the United States and Canada. This year they will perform a version of “Robin Hood” adapted from the earliest Robin Hood ballads which pre-date Chaucer and has been chosen by the village to be suitable for a family audience.

Last month we looked at 5 great ways to make your virtual marketing really work. This month, I’d like you to think about how NOT to do these 6 things that STOP your message being easily read. 1 Avoid words the reader doesn’t understand. Keep the message jargon-free and simple so everyone understands. (Email me if you want a link to my video listing the most over-used words that turn-off readers.) 2 Avoid justified or centred paragraphs. Justified text looks blocky and stops readers even starting to read. Centred text can work well for headlines, but not for the main copy. Stick to leftaligned text wherever you want your prospects to keep reading, because that’s how our brain expects to see it. 3 Tiny text. If you use less than 10 point, your readers’ eyes/ brain have to work too hard to understand, particularly on laptops or tablets. To help your prospects, make sure their eyes read it easily. 4 Long paragraphs. The bigger the block of text, the harder it

ART EXHIBITION PRAISED
“The high quality and great variety of students’ work” was commented on by visitors to this year’s annual Art Exhibition at Meridian School in Garden Walk. Parents, staff and students gathered to celebrate the work which had been achieved at GCSE AS and A Level. The evening was also enlivened by the School’s musicians, with songs and instrumental pieces performed throughout the evening. There are a wide range of skills covered at GCSE and A-Level, including Ceramics, Printmaking, Textiles, Acrylic, Oil and Watercolour painting, Mixed Media and Photography.
OUTDOOR FUN AT TANNERY DRIFT
Tannery Drift First School’s Red Foxes and Arctic Foxes classes recently invited Year 1 & 2 children from Barley School for a fun morning of Outdoor and Adventurous Activities. The children joined forces to tackle exciting challenges around the school playground, field and wildlife area, display skills of observation, problem solving, agility and teamwork to complete each challenge. Our new friends particularly enjoyed the challenge in our lovely Wildlife Area. As well as the expected wildlife, we hunted for larger creatures.
YOUNG PEOPLE NOT FIT FOR WORK?
“The economy is being put at risk because large numbers of teenagers are ‘under-equipped for life’”, stated the Daily Telegraph in July. Surveys of almost 300 businesses were undertaken by the Confederation of British Industry (CBI), and the findings show an overwhelming pattern of poor self-management, low levels of customer awareness and a lack of basic literacy, numeracy and communication skills not just in school leavers but also university graduates. The CBI is calling for a reform of the education system which includes such recommendations as compulsory school-age work th g experience, apprenticeships, Listin Help@Hand press ad 1/8 page – The vocational qualifications and a greater Ofsted emphasis on “development of character” of pupils, rather than exams and academic achievement alone. Whilst change is welcome and, many would argue, long overdue, such reports don’t provide a solution for today’s young people who are heading out into the world of work. Fortunately, smart parents are turning toward the private sector to help prepare their children to enter the real world and give them the best chance of success. One such company is new Royston-based business Help@Hand, a specialist human resources counselling service specifically aimed at school leavers, students and returners-to-work who are undecided about choosing their future career path and in need of professional guidance. Run by Jackie Baer, a former HR Director in the IT sector for over 30 years, Help@Hand offers young people and adults a systematic and logical approach to career discovery, with training to improve communication and inter-personal skills, dummy run interviews, CV review, personal presentation and personality profiling. Such skills will not only help you get an interview, but also prepare you so you are ready for important interviews when the time comes. Help@Hand’s personal development programme will build your confidence and show you how to market yourself to ensure you meet the demands of employers, because first impressions count. HOMES & GARDENS In the garden... August 1. Extending the season
Flower borders can look tired by high summer. The obvious thing to do is make sure you have flowers that are later flowering such as Rudbeckias, Sedums, Anemones and Miscanthus. But you could also extend the season of some of your perennials by dead heading and pruning. Plants such as Geraniums, Alchemilla, Salvia and Nepeta all respond well to being cut right back to a basal clump, promoting new growth and a second flush of flowers.

Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile! It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Tim Law feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is
misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people money, although that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn
up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service the Royston DQG &DPEULGJH DUHDV DQG 7LP LV ÀQGLQJ that his approach is a major factor in his success. ‘The truth is that it’s not just
the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. GARDENING: GROW YOUR OWN TAKE-AWAY
We all know that home-cooked food is better for us than a stream of takeaways, but then we all deserve a little self-indulgence from time to time. So why not save yourself the guilt (and some cash) and grow your own Chinese takeaway right here in your own garden? No I haven’t turned cookery writer, but you can easily grow some of those tasty and crunchy vegetables that make the backbone of many a Chinese stir-fry... and the great thing is that oriental vegetables do well from late summer sowings, so it’s off to the garden centre (not the takeaway) you go! Bean sprouts are so easy to grow you could almost do it with your eyes shut. The common types are sprouted mung-beans, and you can either buy packets of seed or a small packet of the beans themselves from your local health food store. They’ll come with easy cultivation instructions and before you know it you’ll have the beginnings of a stir-fry. Mizuna has got to be one of the most attractive leafy vegetables you can grow. Its green leaves appear soon after sowing the seed in a pot or in open ground, and they add a great spicy flavour to your stir-fry and also add a zing to salads and sandwiches. oriental vegetables do well from late summer sowings And where would your Chinese meal be without that delicious Oriental veg, pak-choi. It’s another easy vegetable to grow late in the summer: just sow the seeds in a well-forked soil, water, and wait. Thin out as per the instructions of the seed packet (you can eat the thinnings too), then just pinch off the roots and pop the plants into the wok. Pak-choi also grows well in a container of multi-purpose compost. Garlic is another essential ingredient. It’s not really the right time of year to plant garlic, but for an unexpected little extra take a few spare cloves and pot them in trays of compost. Keep the compost slightly moist and in a week or two the cloves will start to sprout. What you’re after here aren’t the sprouts though, but the bright green foliage which adds a definitely garlicy flavour to stir-fries and

a touch of colour as well. Radishes add heat as well as crunch, and there are some lovely oriental varieties such as Mantanhong, which is a British-bred Chinese variety with a superbly crunchy bright red-topink inner flesh and spherical white roots – great for colour and texture and with a sweet almost nutty flavour. Sow in open ground or pots from now until early September for cropping in a few weeks’ time. Spring onions are another classic stir-fry component. You won’t get a fully mature crop for harvesting this year unless you’re extremely lucky; but what you will get is a super-young onion that will add both colour and intense flavour to the contents of your wok. And finally, mushrooms will add a meaty texture to your homegrown vegetable stir-fry. Kits for growing both oyster and field mushrooms are available in many garden centres or by mail order. It’s not always easy to get right, I know, but the challenge is definitely worth it when you have exotic mushrooms growing in your cellar, garden frame, greenhouse, or shed.
