Fantastic response on Heath View!
Marshalls had their official launch of the brand new apartments at Heath View at the end of September and have had an amazing response so far. Sarah Howard (Partner, Marshalls) says that “we have literally had people queuing up for these apartments and had not anticipated how much interest they would generate. A third of the flats have already been sold and we are anticipating the top floor apartments being released shortly.” Heath View is being built to a high specification and has the benefit of an underground car park and lift. Therfield Heath is a highly sought after location and conservation area and is within easy walk of the town centre and train station.

OUT & ABOUT The Royal British Legion
“LIVE ON” … To the memory of the fallen and the future of the living August 4th 2014 marked the centenary of the start of the First World War, also referred to as the Great War. This occasion was marked by the Royston Branch of the Royal British Legion with a service of Remembrance on Sunday 3rd of August and a Lights Out Service on the Monday evening of 4th of August; the time that Great Britain entered the war. On Sunday November 9th 2014 (Remembrance Sunday) and again on Tuesday 11th of November 2014 (Armistice Day) the First World War will be in the minds of many, as will be all the wars and conflicts that our service personnel have been involved in since; we will remember the sacrifices made, and the lives lost in service to our country. As custodians of Remembrance the Royal British Legion ensures the memories of those who have fought and sacrificed in the British Armed Forces live on through the generations. This is also the time of year of the Royal British Legions annual Poppy appeal. The Royal British Legion created the Poppy Appeal to help those returning from the First World War. A century on from the start of that conflict, we‘re still helping today’s Armed Forces families in much the same way, whether coping with bereavement, living with disability, or finding employment. In a year that marks the Centenary of the conflict which gave birth to the poppy as a symbol of Remembrance and hope, the Legion’s role remains as contemporary and as vital as it has ever been, supporting today’s generation of Armed Forces families and veterans. The money raised through the Poppy Appeal goes directly to The Royal British Legion’s welfare work providing through life care to anyone who is currently serving in the British Armed Forces, who has previously served, and their families. Monies raised from the Poppy Appeal Help:• bereaved families to Live On • wounded Service men and women to Live On • younger veterans seeking employment and housing to Live On • older veterans needing age-related care to Live On

Let Richmond’s take the strain!
Business Review
We found out how relaxing it is to have all the details of a trip taken care of when we were invited to take an excursion to the West End to see Mamma Mia by Richmond’s Coaches. We were really looking forward to the day and it did not disappoint. We met the clean, modern, air-conditioned coach at the bus station in Royston and then set off to pick up the rest of the passengers. The coach driver explained the structure of the day and we sat back to chat and enjoy the journey. Once in London we drove along Embankment and were able to do a little landmark spotting. Very memorably, we saw the spectacular display of poppies at the Tower of London. We arrived in good time for the lunch (which was part of the deal) at the Kingsway Hall Hotel and the team there were ready to accommodate us. Our lunch of Braised Lamb followed by Pear Crumble was delicious. Afterwards David was back to pick us up and take us to the door of the theatre. He richmond’s reassured us that he would be back to pick us up after the performance and, driver david as we had a little time to spare it seemed rude not to visit a local pub for preshow glass of wine but others wandered around Covent Garden taking in the atmosphere! Of course the show itself was fabulous and we had very good seats. After a little singing and dancing along it was time to find the coach, which we did easily, and relax for the journey home! No need to look at a watch or worry about travel arrangements all day long. The trip was the perfect antidote to all the clock watching and running around that makes up many of our lives today. The coach trip, the two course lunch, the excellent show tickets and the door to door service in London was great value at £72. We would whole heartedly recommend that you give one of the many Richmond’s excursions a go!

spotlight on... Barley
Barley is a truly beautiful English village. It lies at the north easternmost tip of Hertfordshire. Originally an Iron Age settlement before becoming a community of Romano-British farmsteads, in Saxon times the village was known as “Beorasele” meaning Bjorn’s Hall and was a popular resting place for weary travellers. By the time of the Norman conquests Barley had grown to support four manorial estates, run by religious orders, and was one of the most prosperous farming communities in Hertfordshire. The two great landmarks of the village are the gallows sign of The Fox and Hounds which after moving from the High Street in 1955 now spans the Saffron Walden road and also the village Town House, a medieval moot hall that is today still used for village meetings and for marriage ceremonies. The Town House dates back to 1530 but it is thought that it replaced a much older building that had stood for the previous 400 years. The Cage or Lock Up is 17th Century. On a sunny autumn day it is a pleasure to wander and take in the sleepy atmosphere. But Barley is swan like. Beneath the surface it is a hive of activity. For a community of just 279 homes, Barley is blessed with an excellent school, two shops and post office, a
garage, a GP practice and dispensary, three livery yards, a care home, several holiday lets, Richmond’s coach station and two pubs, including the much praised Chequers. With its Chelsea Medal winning Horticultural Society and an active cricket club whose two teams won both their championships in 2014, Barley is still a thriving community. Barley is also home to the Khandel light charity which works to improve the lives of the vulnerable and disadvantaged families in Khandel, Rajasthan and its surrounding community. The current focus of the charity is to support girls and young women. Projects include providing food to ensure that women have the resources to feed their female children and establishing training programmes for adolescent girls which allows them to learn valuable skills and move towards self sufficiency. The Charity is holding a Dinner and Dance on Saturday, 22nd November in Great Chishill village hall. The evening will be professionally catered with a delicious three-course dinner, a free glass of wine on arrival and dancing to a fabulous live band.

Nuthampstead village in rightly proud of its association with 398th Bomb Group and the memorials at The Woodman Inn are testament to that. The centre of the village, the Woodman is a welcoming local with a large dining room, a pool table and a couple of guest rooms to boot. Real ales grace the bar and the open fire makes for a cosy evening. Just around the corner from the Woodman is Nuthampstead Shooting Ground. Taking the old east west runway up to the ranges I was reminded that this was once an airfield. I found Martin Barker who told me all about the place..... It’s actually one of only four Olympic shooting ranges in the UK and Martin coaches members of the Olympic team in two shooting disciplines (trap and double trap). If you fancy your hand at shooting you are invited to ring and book. All equipment is provided and coaching can be given to absolute beginners right up to potential Olympians. Stag, hen and corporate events are welcome and children as young as seven can be shown the ropes. Just to prove he could teach anyone, Martin took me to a range and put a shotgun in my hand, with a little guidance I shot two clays in succession!

MOZART’s REQUIEM
Royston Choral Society will be performing Mozart’s Requiem as the centrepiece of its Autumn Concert at Royston Parish Church on November 15th at 7.30. This is one of the best loved choral works in the UK – 30th in Classic FM’s listeners’ Hall of Fame and according to music publishers, Choraline, the second most popular piece with choirs this season – after The Messiah, from which allegedly Mozart drew inspiration. Ironically, Mozart died before completing the Requiem. One of the best-loved movements with singers is the Lacrimosa containing the last bars Mozart composed: ‘Pie Jesu Domine, Donna eis requiem Amen’ (Gentle Lord Jesus, Grant them eternal rest. Amen) To complete the programme Royston Choral Society offers Purcell’s Te Deum and Jubilate Deo written for St Cecilia’s Day 1694. Conducted by David Boarder, and together with orchestra and soloists this promises to be a stirring concert.
For further information about the concert and the choir please phone 07876 444701, email david.boarder@virgin.net or visit our website at www.roystonchoralsoc.org. uk Tickets £12 (concessions £9, school students £1) available from choir members and at the door. New members are always welcome. The next free Open Rehearsal is on Tuesday 20th January 8.00pm at Royston Parish Church.

Foxton Art Exhibition This year Foxton Art Exhibition celebrates the 12th year of it’s 3 day event at Foxton’s attractive and modern village hall. The exhibition team, led by Foxton School’s head Jenny Jones, is looking forward to welcoming all visitors and artists between 14th &16th November. Foxton’s Art Exhibition was originally a successful annual event held in the old village school. When the school moved to a new site the exhibition stopped for a while. In 2003 Foxton’s art exhibition was enthusiastically resurrected and each year the event has grown, receiving praise from artists and visitors alike for the professional and tasteful presentation of work from local artists. Artwork is displayed in two large modern halls and in 2012 the team were delighted to win the Art Exhibition award in the South Cambridgeshire District Council Arts Award. The exhibition team presents a modern stylish event with exhibits displayed in a variety of medias including ceramics, wood and textiles as well as oils, pastels, watercolour, ink and photography. All proceeds support Foxton Primary School in exciting ways including visual and performing arts.

REED FIRST SCHOOL TO WELCOME FAMILIES Reed First School, which was voted a ‘good school with outstanding behaviour and safety’ in its last Ofsted report, is inviting all prospective families to its Open Afternoon on Saturday 8 November. All parents and their children are very welcome to visit the school from 1 - 4pm to meet the Headteacher, Mrs Jackie Harvey, and other staff members. During the open afternoon they will also be shown around the school and offered refreshments. Set in its own grounds, with good facilities, in the rural setting of Reed, the school provides a stimulating and safe environment in which children can develop and grow in confidence to become independent learners. It has a close relationship with the local community and makes the most of being in a quiet village. Pupils recently took part in the Harvest Festival at St Mary’s Church in Reed and decorated their own boxes before filling them with seasonal food. The boxes were then raffled to raise money for the church and food donations were sent to Jimmy’s Night
Shelter in Cambridge. Another recent local activity has involved the Early Years children walking around the village for their ‘Toddle Waddle’, which raised over £180 for the Meningitus Trust. Reed First School will also be holding a Christmas Shopping Evening from 7.00pm – 9.00pm on 11th November. Local crafts will be on sale, as well as festive refreshments and children will also get the opportunity to decorate a Christmas bauble to hang on their tree at home.
Please contact Reed First School, Jacksons Lane, Reed SG8 8AB 01763 848304 admin@reed.herts.sch.uk and staff will be delighted to discuss opportunities that they can offer your child/children.

Top lip challenge for men’s health comes to Royston November is Movember and lips in and around Royston will become hairier over the coming weeks. Movember is an international initiative to raise funds and awareness for research and action on men’s health, particularly prostate and testicular cancer, and mental health. One Royston resident growing a moustache throughout November is Chris Lee, motivated by the experience of a friend being diagnosed with prostate cancer three years ago. He is also part of a Wimpole parkrunners team This is Chris’s third ‘top lip challenge’ and he explains the purpose behind Movember. “Most men of my age – 59 – are affected by enlarged prostates but many are reluctant to discuss personal health issues – even with friends. As with most cancers, early diagnosis and treatment is vital, so being aware of symptoms is important. Growing a moustache is visible so it raises questions and starts conversations in a natural and informal way.”
To sponsor Chris Lee or join the Wimpole parkrunners team, go to http://mobro. co/leeinroyston or http://uk.movember.com/team/1570801

Love wrestling? You’re in for a treat!
For the first time in history Ultimate British Wrestling or UBW as their fans call it, will be coming to Royston!! It’s promising to be an actionpacked live event for the whole family to enjoy. There’s a huge line-up of matches on the card including a women’s match between Lulu and Jezabeth. Lulu is fresh off of a recent victory in Hitchin, but how will she cope when up against the strong and somewhat strange Jezabeth? Also the night will see the UBW debut of Chris Wyld a 12 year veteran in the ring – what will he have in store for the fans? But to top the night off in a spectacular fashion, for the main event Rich ‘N’ Famous defends the Ultimate British Heavyweight Championship against the number 1 contender Sween. Rich ‘N’ Famous has fought tough opposition to hold onto the title for a year now. Can he hold onto it for the fans of Royston? Or will Sween, accompanied by Paul James, get the upper hand? You’ll have to go along to the Coombes Community Centre on the 8th of November to find out!
Sat 8th Nov, doors open at 6pm with the show running until 9pm. All ages welcome. Tickets cost just £8 per Adult, £5 per Child (under 16) or £22 for a Family (2 Adults & 2 Children). Refreshments sold on site. Tickets are available on the door but pre-booking online by following the links on www.ubwuk.com/events is strongly recommended.

Model Railway exhibition Royston & Disctrict Model Railway Club is holding it’s annual exhibition on Saturday 15th November at Bassingbourn Village College. The club always try to provide a variety of layouts, from small table top size to some that require a large room. Several layouts will have appeared in articles published by the main model railway magazines they also choose layouts that have trains running most of the time! This year they have a special ‘Thomas’ layout giving children (and possibly adults) a chance to drive a train, maybe for the first time. All the proceeds from this go to the Children in Need charity as do monies raised from the Face painting activity. This year we will display the ‘Great Train Robbery’ diorama and on the back of this the club has selected the Railway Benefit Fund as a nominated charity as it seemed appropriate to include this in the project in the hope of being able to give something back to former railway servants. Subject to weather conditions, the Royston Model engineering group will again be offering sit-on rides behind their lovely model railway steam engines in an outside area. There are ‘trade stands’ offering new and second hand items from small tools to parts and complete kits from small businesses to the latest boxed railway set by the main UK model railway providers, such as Bachmann and Hornby. Italian Lamb Shanks Serves 4
Ready in 2½ hours
Lamb shanks are perfect for long slow cooking as they become meltingly tender and the meat just falls off the bone. Here they are braised with all the flavours of Italy – red wine, smoked cured bacon and tomatoes. Serve with creamy mash or boiled ribbon pasta such as tagliatelle or pappardelle. Ingredients: • 4 small lamb shanks • 2 tbsp olive oil • 350g shallots, peeled • 2 garlic cloves, peeled and chopped • 150g cubed pancetta (Italian dry cured bacon) • 300ml red wine • 400g can chopped tomatoes • 2 tbsp sun-dried tomato puree • 2 sprigs fresh rosemary, plus extra sprigs to garnish • 5ml (1tsp) sugar • Creamy mashed potato, to serve
TIP
NOVEMBER 14
Preheat the oven to 170°C/150°C fan/gas 3. Season the lamb shanks with freshly ground black pepper. Heat the oil in a frying pan and brown the lamb shanks over a high heat for 4-5 minutes, turning frequently. Transfer to a shallow casserole dish. Add the shallots, garlic and pancetta to the frying pan and cook over a medium heat for 67 minutes until lightly browned. Pour in the red wine and bring to the boil. Add the tomatoes, sun-dried tomato puree, rosemary sprigs and sugar and pour over the lamb. Cover the casserole and cook in the preheated oven for about 2 hours, or until the lamb shanks are very tender and the sauce has thickened slightly. Adjust the seasoning to taste and serve with creamy mashed potato and garnished with fresh rosemary. Why not double up the quantities and freeze away half for another day? Allow to cool completely then transfer to a freezer-proof container. Freeze for up to 2 months. Defrost thoroughly then reheat gently on the hob for 20-25 minutes until piping hot.

On your marks, get set, Bake!
This September Ladies Circle have been fundraising for local charities. We hosted a tea party with a ‘bake off’ theme and invited our friends and ladies from the surrounding area Ladies Circles’. Together we had a wonderful afternoon drinking tea and tasting delicious cakes. Some ladies entered a bake off and we were incredibly lucky to have the Mayor of Royston be our guest judge. The Mayor had the wonderful task of tasting all the D entries and choose a The mAYOR AND THIR AMY ER WINN E PRIZ first, second and third place. There were many delicious entries but the Mayor crowned Alexandra French, of Royston Ladies Circle, the star baker of the day. The afternoon was a huge success and we raised £ 250.10 which will be donated to local charities in the next few weeks. The tea party has been one of a few fundraiser we have held for local charities and we are thrilled to be donating money to Homestart to continue supporting their good work with young families in the area, Meldreth Manor, who need some renovation work on their therapy pool, money towards a new minibus for Meridian School and other schools in the area as well as helping a local young man with severe disabilities purchase a wheelchair not provided on the NHS. We are a social group of ladies ages 18-45. We meet on the second and fourth Thursday of each month to do fun, social events such as going to the theatre, cinema trip, falconry, baking, recipe swapping and we even recently attempted pole dancing! Then there is our fundraising side, which is very important to us. We run a variety of fundraising events to help raise money for local charities/causes. Look out for us this Christmas supporting Royston Round Table with the Santa float. We will also be running a quiz night in Meldreth village hall in February; more details to follow soon. If you are interested to know more about us, or have a charitable cause we may be able to help with, find us on Facebook or alternatively call Hannah Paradis on 01763 220967.

Beauty Problem Solving Skincare by Helen Taylor
Flawless, radiant, glowing skin is the key to looking naturally beautiful, so forget covering-up with foundation and instead, start treating your lingering skin issues with the help of our problem-solving guide.
40
Adult Acne You might think that acne ends when your teenage years are over, but many women - and men - suffer well into their adult life. Fortunately there’s plenty that can be done to clear up those pesky pimples. Treat it Yourself Thoroughly cleanse your skin twice a day - using an oil free cleanser - to ensure that you remove every trace of make-up and oil. Treat individual spots with concentrated tea-tree oil, just make sure that you apply it
neatly on the area you are treating to avoid irritating surrounding skin. Targeted products that reduce excess oils should be part of your routine. Proactiv do a really good range for acne-prone skin. When you are covering spots, use a medicated concealer so that you not only get the camouflage you want but a convenient treatment too. A more unusual, nontopical treatment for acne that many swear by, is to change your pillow and the case to ones made of bamboo fibres rather than cotton. It’s said that cotton and polycotton absorb acne-causing bacteria and bamboo fibres don’t. Even if you don’t use a bamboo pillowcase, you should wash your cotton

pillowcase every couple of days. Visit the Salon There are so many salon treatments available for acne sufferers, as well as treatments that help to reduce the appearance of the scarring associated with the condition. You’ll also get a professional opinion and a customised plan to improve your skin. Facials are a great once or twice a week treatment that will decongest your skin. Omnilux Blue is a popular salon treatment that uses a spectrally blue light source to clear and control acne and kill spot-causing bacteria on the skin. Micro-dermabrasion is useful for removing acne scarring. Open Pores Enlarged pores can look unsightly, so treat the problem before they ruin your complexion. Treat it Yourself Regular deep cleansing masks will help you to draw out impurities and eliminate excess oil. Use products that are designed to minimise the look of your pores - Benefit’s POREfessional and Clinique’s Pore Refining Solutions range are great. Visit the Salon Micro-dermabrasion and a series of glycolic peels work
NOVEMBER 14
to dissolve the top layers of the skin, thus shrinking pores and ridding the skin of trapped dirt. Milia Those annoying hard, white blemishes - that look like little beads under the skin - can be hard to get rid of, so prevention is definitely better than cure. Treat it Yourself Regular and thorough exfoliation is key to stopping
milia from forming in the first place, but if you’ve got them and you want to treat them at home, then invest in a facial sauna. Using a facial sauna for 10-15 minutes every day helps to unclog pores and loosen dirt, debris and dead skin cells on the skin. You can then use a selfheating, exfoliating mini-peel treatment to help break down the milia even more. Visit the Salon Chemical peels work really well to treat this problem, especially the Priori Advanced AHA peel. Red Cheeks Redness in your cheeks - caused by spider veins or broken capillaries - can make you feel very self-conscious when going make-up free. Caused by factors like hormonal changes in the
body, exposure to harsh weather conditions and UV rays, as well as alcohol consumption, means toningdown the redness can be hard work. Treat it at Home Protect your skin as much as possible, especially if you spend a lot of time outdoors - always use a high-factor sun-protection cream. Neutralise redness and disguise the problem using a green tinted primer under your foundation. Visit the Salon Intense Pulsed Light and Laser Intense Pulsed Light systems are useful in eliminating broken veins and reducing redness. By the use of brief pulses of laser light to destroy smaller blood vessels, the veins will seal. As this means they no longer have blood flowing through them, they won’t look red.

Hockey
in and around Royston
42
Hockey was first played on Therfield Heath in 1957 and the big plan now is to play here again, having been away for nearly twenty years. This time the surface will be Astroturf. After the huge fright in 2012 when the MOD announced the closure of Bassingbourn Barracks the senior teams have desperately been looking for alternative venues and were fortunate to find St. Edmunds College near Puckeridge, however when this became unavailable the club had to spread its net further afield and currently play home games, yes home games at St. Ernulf School in St. Neots some 19 miles away! Ultimately our goal is to play hockey again at our home club on Therfield Heath. We are well on our way for an astro turf to be built on what used to be called the “top pitch” above the tennis courts, and we are working with the local authorities to secure this ASAP, subject to the usual planning and the small matter of finding £500k. So of course we are turning to local business for sponsorship and working to maximise funding from government funding and the Hockey association. Improved coaching and player development have been the key measure of success with club coach Bob Biddlecombe working with both squads on tactical play which showed great success, coupled with the assistance of recently qualified coaches Sarah Gourd and Ian Harper along with Denise Underwood we really do punch above our weight. Imagine what we could do if we had a pitch beside our club house! As a club we continue to look to expand and we still look to recruit new players from both senior and junior levels, this reflects the popularity of Hockey in Royston and the excitement generated by the Olympics when over 650k people watched Hockey at the Riverside Stadium. Because of this success we have started discussions with parents and helpers to run a separate junior committee as it is already a club within a club and needs to have a great deal of focus
and energy to keep it running professionally. Our junior sessions are held on the 3G surface at Meridian School on Sunday mornings and started in September. With such a great level of attendance we now run two sessions each of two age groups due to the popularity from both boys and girls from 5YO to 13YO. This has borne fruit in developing some excellent talent and this year we will be attending more club events to further develop the juniors and get them ready for playing in our senior teams. This cannot happen unless you have qualified coaches and enthusiastic helpers and drivers for away matches on every Sunday morning. We introduced “back to hockey” sessions last year in the evenings, which in part has generated a small group of mums who are now the core of the ladies 4th team; these sessions have also given new players and some returning dads an opportunity to give it a try. We continue to train every Tuesday, Wednesday & Thursday in both St.Neots and Bassingbourn Village College a constant challenge for both players and coaches, not ideal, however it means we keep our fitness and skill levels high to meet the demands of this fast moving game. I will take this opportunity to thank the team behind the scenes who work tirelessly to keep us going and looking forward. They know who they are and I thank them, it makes my life easy due to their commitment.

Motoring Matters
Major changes are coming in the design and manufacture of cars. In 2011, Nissan launched the fully electric LEAF, which stands for Leading, Environmentally Friendly, and Affordable Family Car, an updated version is now manufactured here in the north east of England. I purchased a Nissan Leaf in June of this year, here are my impressions. The Car Designed from the outset as an electric vehicle, the Leaf has been well received by the motoring press. We achieve a genuine 90 or more miles between charges although that figure reduces if the car undertakes motorway journeys. With 109 bhp and generous torque at zero revs, the car steps off the mark with GTI like vigour and goes about its business in almost complete silence. With its relatively heavy weight it rides very smoothly. The car offers similar space to more conventional competitors in its sector with four seats and a good sized boot, the excellent fully integrated satnav would be an expensive option on other cars. When connected to the home charger, the climate control can be set up to achieve a desired temperature before setting off. With heating activated while the driver is eating breakfast, misted windows or frost are a thing of the past. The car aims to be as familiar as possible for new converts; keyless go is triggered to produce a Windows type sound and a green icon indicates that the car is ready to go. In our Accenta version, the wipers and headlamps are automatic; a clever air source heat pump ensures winter warmth with minimal impact on the car’s range. Needless to say, there is no Vehicle Excise Duty to pay and the cars roam the streets of London freely and without charge. Purchase Costs Our Leaf Accenta Flex has a list price of £18,490, a Government of grant of £5000 and a deposit contribution of £3250 from Nissan reduced the price to £10,240, the expensive batteries are leased separately at £70 per month. Given that the car uses the equivalent of over 300 laptop computer batteries and the fact that they
will deteriorate over time, the leasing option is sensible. Nissan claim that the batteries will last for ten years , with the leasing option they would be replaced if they drop below 75%. Charging a Nissan Leaf Before our car was delivered, a dedicated charging point was installed free of charge in our drive by Nissan’s business partner British Gas. A timer is set for off peak electricity hours and the car is always ready to go the following morning. A full charge costs around £1.80, so if one compares that figure to a 50 mpg petrol car, the equivalent fuel cost would be 90 pence per gallon!

Motorists WINTER CHECK LIST
Here are some top tips for a safe journey as the weather cools! Check all fluid levels under the bonnet. Don’t forget Oil, antifreeze, brake fluid, power steering fluid & screen wash/water.
• Check the condition of the battery. • If possible check the rate at which the alternator charges. • Check all lights are working and clean. Replace bulbs as necessary. • Check the condition of windscreen wipers and check how effective they are at clearing the screen. • Clean all windows inside and out. As the sun gets lower in the sky the chances of bad glare increases. • Have a look at your tyres. Pay attention to the tread, general condition and air pressures. • If you can see through the wheels, make a visual check of the condition of your brakes. • Generally speaking leave extra time for your journey in poor weather conditions, leave a bigger gap between you and the car Battery/anti-freeze/alternator/tyres/brake fluid in front. And take things steady...it is better to arrive late than never!

Why Smartphones are bad for business I’m As this year’s series of TV’s The Apprentice gets underway, I am once again disappointed but the terrible business role models the BBC has chosen as contestants (but then it isn’t real, is it?). Rather than talk about that, I’d like to share with you some research I heard this week about how our youngsters are becoming increasingly addicted to their Smartphones. Teenagers are checking social media many times a day and worryingly show clinical signs of anxiety and agitation if separated from their mobile device for any length of time. The kids also said they found it easier to talk to people online than face-to-face – not least because they didn’t need to worry about things like body language, intonation, proper sentences and so on. This shocked me – these things are the real essence of communication, and if our kids are not learning them, the world might find itself saddled with a generation of ineffective communicators very soon. And that would be very challenging at a personal level, as well as being highly damaging for business. Those teenagers obsessively following Twitter, Instagram, Tumblr, Whatsapp and the rest, also confirmed that they felt unsettled if they didn’t know what was going on within their social networks, and that their lives were somehow poorer as a result I suppose it’s not that dissimilar to needing to keep up with the Soaps or The Apprentice, but it must be kept in perspective. If you want to be a success, in business or in your personal life, you need to be in control – can I encourage you to positively reclaim responsibility for yourself, your business and your future. To those who are happy to be pushed around by external forces, passively reacting to events and content to live their lives reacting to social media, (to paraphrase the words of Lord Sugar), “You’re (likely to be) fired! www.julianberry.co.uk

the day the pirates came to town ... 167 cutlasses painted, 350 badges made, 300+ tattoos, 400 treasure trails completed...
… altogether a very busy and successful day! Town Manager Geraint Burnell, speaking on behalf of the Royston First organisation, made the following comments: “Anyone who was in Royston one Saturday in early October could have been forgiven for thinking they’d royston pirates been transported to the Caribbean (aside from the weather!) HAYDEN and KIT There were pirates everywhere! We had 34 entries for the fancy dress competition … and they only represented a proportion of those who came dressed-up (including some parents!) Given that each participant in the treasure hunt was accompanied by at least one parent (and quite a number of grandparents too) I would hazard a guess that the pirate day attracted somewhere in the region of 1000 visitors to Royston. At the October meeting we were royally entertained by Col Maggs, who runs Cambridge Kung Fu. He spoke to us on “Tai Chi Chuan” which he has been teaching for 11 years. We had a wonderful afternoon, he gave a demonstration and we then did some movements ourselves. Some ladies sitting down. The hall was so quiet you could hear a pin drop. In China the over 50’s use Kung Fu as their exercise. It helps with relaxation and coordination and reduces Blood and Stress levels. He then showed us some moves with swords. After tea and home made cakes he judged the competition which was won by Linda Beadle. The first prize in the raffle was won by Shirley Harrington. Our next meeting is on November 13th when Brenda Harley will talk on “How I Became a Reel old Sew and Sew”. We meet in the Heritage Hall at 1.45- 4pm. If you would like more information on our Institute please contact our President Helen Barrett on 01763 849122.
Townswomen’s Guild Our October meeting was a ‘members’ evening where members are in charge of the evening’s entertainment. Proceedings began with a play reading followed by a game of Beetles and a thought provoking quiz. Then followed our Annual Rose Bowl competition when all members of the Guild judge the wide range of entries of arts and crafts. The winner of the Rose Bowl Cup this year was Audrey Nightingale for a delicate, knitted baby’s shawl and bonnet. In second place was Christine Lee, for her finely knitted toddler’s cardigan. As usual the standard of all the entries was very high.
Royston Townswomen’s Guild meets on the first Friday of each month in Royston Town Hall, Room 11, 7-9.30pm. If you would like to know more about our friendly, welcoming group do please contact Pauline Gates on 01763 221314.

We began our Autumn Programme in September and during the month enjoyed a variety of speakers including Andy Malcolm on “The True Price of Fish and Chips”, and the dangers our fishermen encounter out at sea; Richard Furnival-Jones’s amusing talk on the history of Harrods entitled “The Palace of Knightsbridge” and Brian Sawford spoke about the unique wild life on the island of Scomer off the Pembrokeshire coast. At the end of the month we enjoyed a visit to the Flower Festival in St Alban’s Cathedral where 139 amazing flower arrangements were on display. Talks during November will include Jeff Harrison on “A Walk on the Wild Side”; “Women in Motor Sport” by Anne Garnish and a return visit by the spinning lady Celia Gwynn. Why not join one of our meetings held in the Town Hall on Monday evenings, 8pm. HOMES & GARDENS
Planting Trees and Shrubs Now is the time to plant larger trees and shrubs, ready for next year.
54
This is a great time of year to get planting – the soil is still holding a bit of warmth from the late summer and is now more moist and provides good conditions for roots to develop, spread and establish. Furthermore trees, shrubs and woody climbers in particular are often a very good buy at this time of year. A good planting hole or pit is essential, and you should sure that it is at least several inches larger than the current spread of the roots of the tree or shrub that you are about to plant. For years the advice has been that plenty of bulky organic matter should be incorporated in to the hole and the mixture with which you back fill it. Investigations now suggest that this may not necessarily be ideal: make the planting hole too ‘cosy’ and the tree’s roots may be inclined to stay in the hole. In a heavy clay soil a planting hole full of compost may also end up acting as a sump, so when the soil is wet the compost draws more moisture in to the hole, resulting in waterlogged roots. All very logical, but then I would also suggest that if you garden on a very sandy, poor soil, a well-prepared planting pit which includes bulky organic matter such as garden compost will help to reduce the risk of drying out. Similarly, provided the organic matter is incorporated over a good enough sized area on a heavy soil, I think it does help to improve aeration and drainage around tree roots, especially if you incorporate some grit too. Well-rotted manure, garden compost and proprietary bagged compost are all useful in planting holes and if it is largely an improvement in soil texture which you are after, then home-made leafmould is great too. Next, to tease or not to tease the roots? I’m a teaser every time, having seen thousands of trees fail because their potbound roots never moved out in to the soil properly, if at all. Planting depth is important too, so do make sure that you cover the
HOMES & GARDENS
roots, and only the roots, with soil. Even the compost level in the pot is often too deep, so start from scratch if necessary. Laying a straight cane over the top of the planting hole will help you to gauge the correct depth more easily. Then of course there is staking. I suggest only doing this with large trees, apples on very dwarfing rootstocks or if the site is extremely windy as a tree will get tougher and more resilient if given a chance to move around slightly and so form a strong trunk. If you do stake, short stakes at an angle are now regarded as best, and do use a good quality tree tie, properly fitted so that the tree’s bark is not chaffed. Finally, remember that aftercare is essential, regular thorough waterings will be needed during dry weather, especially for the first couple of years after planting. If you don’t get the aftercare right, the plant and all that time and effort can easily be lost. by Pippa Greenwood Visit Pippa’s website www.pippagreenwood.com for a great range of gardening-related items including‘Grow Your Own with Pippa Greenwood’ Gift Cards, handmade pottery herb planters, Pippa’s favourite weeding tool, signed books and lots of useful garden items.

In the garden... November Top tips and ideas for your garden Melbourn garden designer Richard Arnott www.thinkgardenthinkrichard.co.uk As the temperatures begin to drop the leaves begin to reveal their glorious autumn tints. In this feature I will suggest ways to make improvements to your outdoor spaces at this time of year to make them even more enjoyable.
1. Autumn plants
Parthenocissus ‘Henryana’ is a good climbing plant for a fence or wall with excellent autumn colour. For berrying interest I like a variegated holly such as Ilex aquifolium ‘Golden King’, the gold leaf margins are a good contrast for the red berries. Callicarpa ‘Profusion’ has unusual purple berries that show up well when the leaves have fallen. It is not all about leaf colour at this time of year, stems are important too. Prunus serrula has a lovely mahogany coloured bark that looks fantastic in the sunlight and is a great addition as a specimen tree or focal point for any outdoor space.
2. Be observant
I like to look at what other people have done in their gardens. Be open to new planting combinations and innovative uses of space. It is very easy to jump to the simplest solution but take your time and consider what you
are putting in your outdoor space. I always recommend new home owners who inherit an established garden to live with it for a year to see what plants they have. This way you can decide what you are keeping or not.
the start of the bare root planting season. Why not do something different to mark the boundary in the garden and plant a mixed native hedge. This is great for wildlife 3. Plant evergreens and looks fantastic. Home & Interiors Give Your Walls A Facelift By Katherine Sorrell
Not a fan of wallpaper but bored with paint? Use your imagination and ingenuity to create all sorts of interesting decorative effects on your walls, says interiors expert Katherine Sorrell Terrific Tiles
Hard-wearing, longlasting, easy to clean and potentially highly decorative, tiles are often overlooked as a wallcovering other than for
the inevitable bathroom or kitchen splashback. Yet they are available in as great a variety of colours and patterns as wallpaper, and can have just as much impact. They can be super-shiny or matt and understated; sleek and machine-made or wobbly, rustic and hand-made; even and smooth, or knobbly and textured; even digitally printed with your own designs. Something to suit every style. Why not consider tiled walls for hallways, conservatories, laundry rooms and utility rooms? Given their fabulous decorative potential, they may also work as part of a living area, too. Just how a tiled area looks – whether it’s a whole wall or a small splashback – depends on a variety of factors. Their colour, pattern and texture are most important, of course, but size (from huge slabs to tiny mosaic) matters, too, while shape also plays a part. While most tiles are square or rectangular, other shapes are available, and can create complex patterns that have enormous impact. Your chosen layout also makes a difference, whether it’s a simple grid, an
offset design (also known as brick bond), herringbone, pinwheel or random. Will you add borders or mix two or more patterns? How wide apart will your tiles be spaced? And what colour grout will you choose? Tiling may not be as simple as it first seems – but it can certainly be rewarding.
Timber panelling
Wood panelling keeps heat in and noises out, and is great for disguising wonky walls and. More than that, though, it has fabulous warmth and character. Choose fielded panelling for classic feel, or simple tongue and groove for that cosy, country look. Leave natural or paint to co-ordinate with the rest of the room – it’s up to you.
Mirror
A wall (or a portion of it) covered with a sheet of mirror will reflect light around and instantly make the room seem bigger. The larger the mirror, the thicker it needs to be, so it’s often a good idea to get professional help to attach it securely.
Different types of tiles
Ceramic: relatively inexpensive, don’t need sealing or polishing and are easily wiped clean. Porcelain: heavier and harder-wearing than ceramic, and can often be used outdoors as well as inside. Surface effects include natural stone, metals, concrete, fabric, wood and leather. Glass: clear, frosted and coloured, and have a lovely, translucent appearance. Mosaics: small ceramic, glass, stone, metal or even shell tiles, usually supplied on a backing sheet and employed for small areas of decorative effect. Natural stone: includes limestone, marble, granite and slate. Can be porous, so check whether they need to be sealed before use.

colours, patterns and textures is available.
Leather
Sheet metal
Costly but eye-catching and incredibly luxurious, leather-clad walls possess enormous character, while their patina, like that of a quality shoe, will develop over time. Apparently, they are even sound- and fire-retardant.
Fabric
Choose your fabric, line it, stretch it, and staple it to battens fixed to the walls. There’s no way around it: this traditional technique is expensive. It looks amazing, however, and is helpful in insulating against cold and noise.
Cork
Fancy an unusual wall installation? Then opt for sheets of metal – steel, copper or aluminium, say. Finishes include different textures, lasercut designs or even designer rust and, depending on their patina and arrangement, the end result could be either overtly industrial or sleek and upmarket.
Cork sheets and tiles offer many appealing qualities, from being warm and soft to the WASH and GO touch to having insulating and Composites and soundproofing laminates benefits.
