OUT & ABOUT

NATIONAL MILLS WEEKEND

Saturday 9th & Sunday 10th May National Mills Weekend is the annual festival of our milling heritage and provides you with a fantastic opportunity to visit mills, many of which are not usually open to the public. The Great Chishill Windmill, an iconic landmark on the borders of South Cambridgeshire and Hertfordshire will sadly not be open as it is in need of restoration. The Mill is owned by Cambridge County Council which has been unable to provide funds for much needed repairs. A team of volunteers has formed the Great Chishill Windmill Trust to take on the full restoration of this amazing Windmill and have entered into a 125 Year Lease with the Council. With the help of Engineers and Millwrights, a Restoration Plan was commissioned and work is about to start on some urgent jobs. There are various phases to the planned restoration with the ultimate aim being a fully rotating and working Mill. The Windmill has been classed as a ‘building at risk’ by English Heritage. So far, The Trust has managed to raise some funds, by way of a bequest and other valued donations, which will allow vital repairs to commence but it will need to consider other fund raising to progress the work. An information meeting and children’s Art Competition will take place in Great Chishill Village Hall from 2pm – 5pm on Saturday 13th June 2015 to launch the restoration. Entries to the Art Competition should be taken to Great Chishill Village Hall on Saturday 6th June from 9am to 12 noon. Contact Hazel Hayden on 01763 838254 or hayden.heydonrd@virgin. net for details.

So, go along and meet the Trustees and Committee with a Millwright on hand to answer questions. Entry is free and delicious cream teas with scones made from milled flour and locally made jam will be available. The Trust would be pleased to hear from anyone with time or skills to offer to help with this restoration and particularly with knowledge of Listed Building Consent/ Planning.

ASHWELL AT HOME

The picturesque village of Ashwell welcomes visitors to its popular annual event ‘Ashwell at Home’, where visitors can enjoy a wide range of things to see and do, with entertainment for all the family. This year’s theme is ‘Secret Ashwell’ and there are lots of interesting things for visitors to discover. Stunning gardens both large and small will be open for you to view, including the pretty village cottage garden and a ‘secret garden’ never open before; you can visit the village lock-up (no longer in use!) and help dig an archaeological test pit to discover Ashwell’s secret past! Children can enjoy free workshops including singing & drama and making and racing junk boats. There will be lots of things happening around the village including a Mummers play, Morris dancing, veteran cycles, Well Dressing and a variety of live music – whatever your tastes, you’ll find something to entertain

you. Not to mention cow milking at the local dairy, basket making and a cricket match! And everywhere you will find “Ashwell Alive” plaques telling the history of the village and many of its houses. Find out about the local businesses, some of whom will also be opening their premises on the day – including a jeweller’s workshop – and find out what’s on offer at the local clubs and organisations. Then there’s a visit to Ashwell Museum, a look around the school and the beautiful village church containing graffiti from the time of the ‘Black Death’! Refreshments will be available throughout the day with homemade lunches at the school and light refreshments and teas in the Parish Rooms, church and school. THE ROYSTON & DISTRICT LOCAL HISTORY SOCIETY AT 50 Who would have thought that two or three people interested in history in Royston in 1965 would have started such a lively group of people, achieved so much and still be here 50 years later?! In 1965 The Royston and District Local History Society was formed, a Committee elected and a Constitution drawn up, and three of the original Committee still attend. In 1969 the Society was requested by the Council to help with Royston Cave. Open during the summer months on Saturday and Sunday afternoons, we agreed and volunteers were made available. The Society was accumulating a growing Collection, so the NHDC was approached and on 26th June 1976 a small room at the back of the Town Hall opened as a Museum, on Saturdays only and manned by our volunteers. In 1979 a Trust Document was drawn up and three trustees appointed, eventually joined by two more. By 1984 the museum was established in the United Reformed Church Schoolroom, funded by Royston Town Council. The five Trustees continued to protect and manage the Collection and the Society provided volunteers to help the first appointed Curator. Now in 2015, this still

works well. In November 1984 the Friends of Royston & District Museum was born and has been supporting the Museum and encouraging interest ever since. The RDLHS has achieved its aim to have a Museum in Royston, which now includes Art Gallery in its title. As we celebrate 50 years, we look forward to more achievements and the continued success of our Society.

RJ’S+ I am a mother of four girls and my youngest daughter, Regan, was diagnosed with Autism at two years old. About five years ago a friend and I started a youth club for children with additional needs with the help of Royston Mencap. We started this as we felt there were no other facilities available for our children to socialise and meet new people. This ran for four years and unfortunately had to close two years ago as the venue we had was no longer suitable. With the help again of Royston Mencap and also Andy and Viv Williams at the Open House Project, I am pleased to be able to offer a new group RJ’s+ for young adults with additional needs in and around the Royston area. The ‘drop-in’ centre will open from 6-8pm on alternate Thursdays and Mondays at 4 Market Hill in Royston. Young people aged from 15 to 27 can attend and there is no cost. Snacks and drinks will be available to buy.

This is an exciting new venture and I would love it to be a roaring success as again, I feel that there are no other facilities available for this age group and it is important for them to have a safe fun place to go to socialise and meet new people! RJ’s+ Social Club for young people with additional needs. For more details call Linda Hall on 07767 847796 In May the dates are 7th, 11th, 21st & 28th

TOWNSWOMEN’S GUILD Fundraiser for the ‘Friends of the Rosie Hospital’, Avril Williams, was warmly welcomed to our April meeting. She explained how she first became involved following the birth of her daughter and her involvement with fundraising. Avril’s description of the size and use of the ‘water birthing’ room created a lot of discussion. There was also a display of knitted items made by volunteers, for sale in aid of the baby unit. It proved to be a very interesting afternoon. The Townswomen’s decision to meet on a Tuesday afternoon is proving popular, with some of our past members re-enrolling, as well as newcomers. At our next meeting on 5th May, our speaker, Geoff Evans’ is to tell us about ‘A Little Bit of Borneo’.

Royston Townswomen’s Guild meets on the first Tuesday of each month in The Heritage Hall, Royston Town Hall, 2-4 pm. If you would like to know more, please contact Pauline Gates on 01763 221314. Visitors welcome.

UP WHERE BUZZARDS FLY... When Cambridge Gliding Club offered one of the team here at The Listing a trial lesson I have to say I jumped at the chance. By the time I was driving down the track towards the airfield I was a little less sure, and once I had watched the short safety briefing video I have to confess that I was decidedly nervous... My instructor, Robert Theil was reassuringly calm and confident as he drove me over to the launch site in a golf buggy. The day was warm and bright but Robert mentioned that the haziness would make visibility reasonably challenging. While we waited for our glider to return from its current flight Robert explained that gliders can fly for hours at a time given the right conditions - it is not uncommon for pilots to take off from the gliding centre’s home at Gransden Lodge and fly to Wales and back! He also mentioned that they were able to do aerobatics... After a few minutes of chatting in the warm sunshine our glider returned and was attached to the winch ready for our launch. I was helped into my parachute and briefed on what to do in case of an emergency, shown the controls and strapped in to my seat. Now, Robert had checked if I had a nervous disposition and warned me that the winch would accelerate the glider from 0 to 60mph very quickly - but it honestly felt like we were being propelled by a rocket. I am ashamed to say I swore, loudly - and screamed. But then we were in the air still climbing at a heartstopping angle and Robert released the winch.

14

After a few minutes I began to stop shaking and began to relax... eventually I was able to say more than “Wow!” and as Robert turned the glider in circles he explained that we were being carried up by a column of warm air rising faster than the cooler air surrounding it. Soon, we were at around 2,000 feet. That was when Robert asked if I wanted to loop the loop...

So, nose down to the ground we seemed to tear through the air and then up and over we went - and then we did it again! It was utterly terrifying and utterly brilliant. After a few more turns to gain altitude we soared off across the landscape. Although the view would have been better on a clearer day I was more than content to see the landscape passing below me, Robert pointed out landmarks like the Windmill at Bourn and Wimpole Hall as we went. After a while we spotted three buzzards turning in a thermal and set off to join them. They showed that nature does it better but it was an honour to fly with them above and below the glider, playing in the air currents. Now it was my turn to fly. The training gliders have dual controls to enable pupils to take control whilst being guided by their instructor. After a quick lesson I was able to turn the glider and straighten it up again and to fly in a reasonably straight line under Robert’s instruction. By the time we landed (a surprisingly smooth experience) I had the biggest grin on my face! The whole experience was exhilarating and rewarding and gliding is one of the most cost-effective ways of learning to fly. Oh, and don’t tell my son, but children as young as 14 can become cadets at the club and learn to fly solo... A trial flight would make a fantastic present (and is cheaper than you may think). The Centre is open seven days a week throughout the summer months. Have a look at its very good website with full details of what’s available.

MAKE YOUR WEDDING DAY ONE THEY’LL ALL REMEMBER! Today guests are considered by most couples to be central to the wedding celebration and their comfort and enjoyment is a significant consideration. If your friends and family are enjoying themselves and everyone is getting along famously, it’ll make the celebrations even more special. So how can you make sure a good time is had by all? The first thing to bear in mind is that people that come to your wedding won’t necessarily know each other, so it’s important that you give everyone the best chance of becoming better acquainted. You may not have time to introduce people personally, so instead ask a close friend or relative to look out for those who are coming along on their own. Finalising the table plan can be tricky but it is worth checking that guests are seated next to someone with similar interests or who works in the same field. Quieter individuals may be more comfortable sitting next to somebody warm and welcoming. Games can help guests to mingle - if you have a sunny day and a garden, get some lawn activities going – giant Connect 4, Twister, croquet or even a friendly game of cricket. Bookkeeper Rebecca Field said: “My brother-in-law is a plane fanatic and studied aviation at university, as did a lot of guests at the wedding, so we all helped make a range of Airfix models for the tables. Each table’s name was that of the plane and he gave the models away to younger guests, which people thought was really touching.” This kind of talking points can work very well.

16

Don’t forget any little ones. Look after them and their parents can relax and enjoy themselves. So think about food timings; if you have a midday ceremony and the wedding breakfast isn’t until mid-afternoon, arrange a hamper with biscuits, packets of raisins, bananas and cartons of squash to see them through. Avoid E numbers and

WEDDINGS

MAY 15

too many sweets – and have the basket on a high table so that tiny hands can’t stuff themselves silly. Don’t forget that weddings can be boring for children, so pick up some cheap toys to keep them amused during speeches. Colouring books and crayons are great (be careful with pens), as are books, and puppets are fantastic for later in the day. If you are getting married in a hotel, encourage parents to book a room so that if their children need an early night, they can all be put down together and parents can take it in turn to supervise so that nobody misses out on the party. Don’t be afraid to break tradition if it suits you. Why not skip the receiving line, so that people aren’t forced to wait around, only to struggle for something to say? And when it comes to speeches, keep them short and sweet – perhaps with just the bride and groom offering a few words of thanks? The trick with all these personal touches is to delegate. Plan well in advance and ask for help from your ushers and bridesmaids – it’s what they’re there for. The most important thing to remember is to stay relaxed; the more stressed you become with all the details, the less fun your wedding day will be. When people talk about ‘that fantastic wedding’, they generally mean that it was a comfortable, fun, and relaxing day spent celebrating two people they love.

HEAVY PETAL

My name is Joanna (or Jo) and I am the founder of a new and exciting floral design company based in Royston.

My desire to be more hands-on creative alongside the need for a better work/life balance led me to put an end to my 15-year TV career to follow my heart. I studied a Diploma in Flower Design at the famous Covent Garden Academy of Flowers in London allowing my creativity and love of nature to flourish. Last year I set up Heavy Petal and I now work out of my home studio in Royston. My aim is to really tap into the imaginations of all my brides and deliver truly show-stopping flowers that reflect their personality as much as the dress and venue do. Perhaps you are a bride-to-be or you know of someone getting married this year? If so then I’d love to hear from you and consultations are free. I will be exhibiting at The Royston Wedding Fair at The Old Bull on Sunday 10th May so do pop along and discuss your ideas!

Local photographer Clive Porter has launched a new, vibrant range of greeting card views of the area. Branded, ‘Images of Royston’, the collection is aimed at promoting the Hertfordshire, Cambridgeshire border around the town, and each card carries a short history, and details of the applicable image on the reverse. Clive says the idea is to show the public just how photogenic Royston and the neighbouring countryside is. “Amongst other plus points I hope that the promotion will help to sell this region, and encourage more folk to visit and shop in the Town.” The cards are printed on quality board, and cello wrapped. There are more images to follow and these, as well as the current range will be on sale at Stationery Cupboard in Royston High Street. Shortly, key fobs, fridge magnets, and coasters will be added to the collection.

YEAR 4 SCIENCE FESTIVAL More than 100 youngsters from six of Melbourn Village College’s feeder primary school enjoyed a fantastic hands-on science day at the senior school. Coinciding with National Science Week and the Cambridge Science Festival, the Year 4 pupils were welcomed by a group of talented Year 8 and 10 Melbourn students for one of three sessions during the day and took part in eight experiments. These were:

range of sound frequencies. Flame tests – students burnt some chemicals and observed what colours the flames turned.

Fire extinguishers – students made models of carbon dioxide fire extinguishers using baking powder and hydrochloric acid. They then used the gas to put out a candle.

Spinners – students coloured a pair of pictures such as a bird and a cage. When they were stuck together and spun they looked like they were one picture.

Spinning Tardis – students made model tardis’ and used the power of water to help them to spin.

Extracting Iron – students used the chemicals in a match to get iron from iron oxide. They then tested the iron with a match.

Indicators - students used universal indicators to investigate whether a number of household liquids were acids or alkalis.

Melbourn science teacher Cat Rich said, “It was a fantastic day for all concerned. The Year 4 students tried lots of experiments that they would normally be able to do at school and Melbourn students worked exceptionally well, teaching the Year 4s”

Static Electricity - students used balloons to create static electricity. They then used this to make foil hover, pick up semolina and move a coke can! Hearing tests – students looked at how sound waves travelled to our ears using a model ear and then a signal generator to create a

A Year 4 student said: “ I liked the day a lot and hope that I can come again. My favourite part was when the flames burnt green!” Fred Close, a Year 8 student, added: “I enjoyed the day, working with the Year 4 students.”

ROYSTON CRAFT FAIR TO BE HELD EVERY MONTH! We are delighted that Royston Craft Fair will now be held monthly! With over 30 stalls on both floors of the Town Hall the popularity of the event is evident. It is a fantastic opportunity for artisans to sell contemporary crafts and there is also a well received tearoom. Organiser and crafter Laura Whitford of Kozmic Dreams says: “I’ve had some lovely comments and support locally, so hopefully we’ll have lots of people coming into the town each month. I love living here and although I’m running this as a small business, one of my incentives is to provide some different products to buy each month for locals, and hopefully tempt people from further afield to come and see our lovely town! I also love supporting other crafters, who make such amazing things and don’t always get the chance to showcase their talent.” Regular fairs begin in June. SPOTLIGHT ON... BARKWAY

You only have to take a stroll along Barkway High Street to see the rich history of the village illustrated by the many handsome historic buildings which grace what was once a stretch of the main route between London and Cambridge. That history accounts for its largely shoestring configuration with the older houses (and once businesses) being concentrated along the main thoroughfare. Now bypassed by traffic travelling up and down the country, Barkway today finds its identity as a peaceful village with a strong rural tradition and a thriving community spirit. This is perhaps most in evidence when the whole village comes together to organise the annual village market. Last year upwards of 3,000 attended to visit the stalls, be entertained and enjoy the food and drink. This year the date for your diary is 9th May and the event will be opened at 10am in a special opening ceremony! Whilst the event is organised by Barkway Village Hall, lots of other local charities and good causes use it as a platform to raise money, too. Friends of Barkway Church organise a barbecue and tombola – the bacon butties are to die for and the school always provide delicious food too. June 20th sees the return of a popular event in Barkway: Music on the Rec. It’s a party in the open air, with music from a band performing on the back of a truck. Everyone is invited to bring a picnic. Some choose to bring gazebos – and once they’re all in place it’s like a miniature village on the Recreation Ground. There’s a great atmosphere as merrymakers dance happily as the sun goes down. The event has been held 3 times before, most recently in 2011, and this time the emphasis will be on giving local talent a chance to perform. The main event will be the popular band Rumpus, and other acts are yet to be confirmed. As darkness falls, fireworks will round off the evening. Advance tickets are just £10, and it’s half price for students. Those under 16 get in free! Call 01763 848946 to book.

In recent years the Social Club has been transformed to a lively meeting place for members with facilities including darts, a full size snooker table and pool table. These are supported (naturally enough) by a wellstocked bar. About once a month the Village Hall at the north end of the village adjacent to the Social Club is transformed into a cinema venue “Barkway Picture Palace”. Anyone is welcome to be a member - you don’t have to live in the village... At other times it is a great venue for clubs, meetings & events and boasts excellent facilities. It is also the venue for Barkway Players annual pantomime - Oh yes it is... The quaint grade II listed building known as the Reading Room was gifted to the village in 1897 and now functions as a meeting place and book lending centre. Just up the road on the High Street is VK Hair Styling where the teams ambition is to be truly welcoming and to provide an experience so enjoyable that customers would look forward to coming back time and time again. The one remaining pub in the village, The Tally Ho now offers a warm welcome and excellent food in a lovely setting - for more information see our review...

w THE TALLY HO, BARKWAY e i v e R If you have not been to the Tally Ho during the last year you will be in for very pleasant surprise should you return - and I can recommend that you do. The pub has been transformed into a bright airy, friendly space with a large and sunny dining room and a cosy bar area. Not only that but the kitchen boasts an excellent and enthusiastic chef keen to serve you with local food, simply but beautifully cooked and presented. Head chef Darren O’Mahony has launched an exciting new menu which is on offer seven days a week and changes daily. Darren started working in the catering industry at the age of 14, when his chef brother asked him to help out as a kitchen porter. Self-taught and with a passion for all cuisines, Darren’s ultimate “chef hero” is Raymond Blanc. The new Tally Ho menu focuses on British classics and seasonal specials made with quality ingredients. Suppliers are chosen for their freshness of produce and their locality to the pub. Darren even forages for hedgerow ingredients like Wild Garlic and Horseradish.

My dish of Slow Braised Hertfordshire Beef Rib was served with celeriac and potato Dauphinoise and was a delight. The succulent beef fell off the bone at a mere touch of the knife and the deep flavour of the sauce served with it combined to provide the perfect antidote to the blustery spring day outside. Whilst I did not have room to truly do justice to the Salted Caramel Tart with Honeycomb & Icecream it was a thing of loveliness with a crisp pastry base and rich caramel topping cut with just the right balance of salt. If all this is not enough, the pub opens at 7.30am for breakfast, offers home made cakes for morning coffee and afternoon tea and takeway hot drinks all day too. If you find yourself in Barkway you must drop in, and if you didn’t have a reason to visit the village- you do now!

BEST IN THE WORLD!

Name one thing we Brits do best … Asparagus. Hailed by leading chefs as the best in the world be sure you don’t miss out on its relatively short season of just seven to eight wonderful weeks. Think summer… think asparagus! Forget enjoying asparagus just once or maybe twice when it’s in season, this sensational home-grown ‘super food’ comes packed with nutrients, bursting with taste! A truly versatile veg, asparagus is delicious in all sorts of different dishes – for lunch, dinner and even breakfast! For those who’ve only ever considered asparagus as a luxurious accompaniment to a main course, it’s time to think again! There are numerous ways to taste British asparagus when it’s on the shelves. How about a lazy Sunday brunch of scrambled eggs topped with melt-in-the-mouth asparagus spears tossed in butter? Or a light lunch of asparagus, bacon and

poached egg salad with a mustard dressing? For dinner; why not whip up an asparagus, tomato and mozzarella pizza for the family or impress dinner guests with pan fried fillet of beef with roasted asparagus and red pepper and horseradish hollandaise? Asparagus is so versatile and it can be enjoyed by everyone – the young, the old, families, the health-conscious and pregnant women alike. Try the kids on lightly buttered asparagus spears dipped in runny boiled eggs. Asparagus is traditionally served simply steamed or lightly boiled and is delicious either way. However, it can also be roasted, chargrilled, barbecued or stir-fried. Or how about the easiest way of them all, simply eating asparagus raw, just as nature intended, in a fresh and light summer salad? And while fresh British asparagus will always be a ‘special’ veg, it’s now firmly established as an ingredient which everyone can enjoy. Local to Royston, Bury Lane’s asparagus season runs from April to June. The spears are hand-picked daily from the fields in the early morning and in store for 9am. You really cannot get fresher than that!

BAKED VANILLA CHEESECAKE Hello again my fellow foodies! Now that spring is well under way what better way to spend it than round the table catching up with your nearest and dearest. So to make sure you aren’t stuck in the kitchen missing out on all the fun here is my favourite dessert recipe. All the hard work is done the day before, indeed the cheesecake is better for chilling overnight, so plenty of time is left for you to delight and entertain your guests. Come serving time simply whip the cheesecake out of the fridge and revel in the collective admiration from your guests! Makes 12 generous portions Cooking temperature 150°C or Gas no. 3 5 large eggs from happy free range hens 550ml sour cream 800g cream cheese 110g butter (All the above items should be at room temperature, this will prevent lumps forming and make for a smoother finished product.) 300g caster sugar 2 tbsp cornflour 1.5 tsp vanilla extract 1 tsp lemon juice 1 tsp grated lemon zest 1 large tbsp butter 3 digestive biscuits This recipe requires a 25cm springform loose bottom tin, and a roasting tin big enough to sit this tin into and deep enough to take approximately 2.5cm of water. Begin by preparing the tin Firstly, generously smear one tablespoon of butter around the inside edges and bottom of the tin. Next crush the biscuits to a fine crumb and sprinkle into the tin and roll the crumbs to all the butter covered areas. Shake out any excess crumbs. Now wrap the outside of the tin in two layers of tin foil. You are aiming to seal the base and the sides of the tin completely to prevent any water leaking in.

more. Do not be alarmed at how runny the mixture has become! Carefully pour the mixture into your prepared tin, place that into the roasting tray, then pour boiling water into the roasting tray roughly 2cm up the side of the cheesecake tin. Very carefully place the tray into the middle of the oven and bake for approximately 2 hours. When ready the top will be very lightly coloured and there should be a slight “wobble” to the centre of the cheesecake. Keep checking the oven, you may need to top up the water, and do not be alarmed if the cheese cake rises like a souffle, it will deflate as it cools! Once you are happy that the cheesecake is cooked, carefully remove it from the oven, and the water bath, peel away the foil and allow to cool completely at room temperature before placing in the fridge to chill for at least 4 hours but preferably overnight. I like to serve this with fresh raspberries and a generous dollop of Crème fraîche, but why not try your favourite fruit? Strawberries or blueberries would go well with the vanilla in the cheesecake. Experiment with sauces and different flavour combinations; banana with butterscotch sauce or pears with chocolate sauce for example. Try using crushed ginger biscuits instead of digestives and serve with slices of spiced caramel oranges or crushed amaretto biscuits and serve with cherries. I’d love to hear your favourites combinations.

Tallulah Le Fey

Now for the cheesecake mixture Beat the eggs and the sour cream together until completely blended. In a separate bowl beat the cream cheese with the butter until creamy and smooth. Now add the egg mixture to the cream cheese mixture and beat for a further 2 minutes.

Tip in the sugar, cornflour, vanilla, lemon juice and lemon zest and beat for 2 minutes

MELBOURN BOWLS CLUB OPEN DAY Melbourn Bowls Club will be holding an Open Day on Sunday 3rd May 2015 at their Green on The Moor from 2pm. Our Open Day is an event to which you can bring all the family and have a good afternoon out. Come along and enjoy some gentle exercise and good company, as well as tuition in the game of bowls, for those new to the sport, and the opportunity for some competitive games for more experienced players. There will be afternoon tea at the end of the activities giving an opportunity to get to know everybody in a relaxed atmosphere. We would particularly like to welcome prospective new members at this event, whether you are an experienced Bowler or someone who has never played before. We enter teams in the Cambridge and District League, Meldreth League, Business House League and Foxton League. In addition we play friendly Matches on Sundays and also organise special events. There will be more of these special events than usual this year as Malcolm Davey the Melbourn Bowls Club President will also be acting as President of

the Cambridge and District Bowls League and a number of events in conjunction with this will be held at Melbourn Bowls Club. For those who have not previously played Bowls we will provide coaching and all necessary equipment on Open Day and you will only need to have flat shoes. We have found that new Bowlers can soon find themselves playing in Friendly matches and also often in League matches. Bowls is a real family game where different generation can participate on equal terms, meaning all the family can join in together. There is a lively Social Life at the club, which has its own Bar and organises Coffee Mornings every Thursday during the Summer Season from 10.30am until noon.

Croquet in and around Royston Croquet is a wonderful game which combines a degree of accuracy with an element of strategic play. It can be played by young or old and, because it has a handicap system, players of different abilities can play on equal terms. It is played on a lawn about the size of a tennis court with six hoops. The object is to get balls through the hoops in a particular order.

There are two major versions of the game: Golf croquet is simple but skillful and is played to International level. The idea is to get your ball through the correct hoop before your opponent. You can do this by accurate positioning so that you can hit your ball through the hoop (and by knocking your opponent out of the way). Beginners usually start by playing golf croquet as is it social and everyone gets to play, games usually take about 20 minutes Association Croquet is more complicated and uses a greater range of skills; games usually last much longer. It is often described as like playing snooker on grass, where great skill can be exercised in setting up breaks.

Meldreth Croquet Club Meldreth Croquet Club has existed for over 15 years; we have a competition standard lawn at the rear of the British Queen in Meldreth High Street. The Club welcomes new members whether familiar with croquet or complete novices. Instruction is provided for members with little or no experience or who wish to improve. Although at first sight croquet may look complicated, most people can grasp the basics very quickly. We play most Sunday mornings, weather permitting, and often Tuesday evenings during the summer.

ANTENATAL CLASSESS EXPAND TO SPREAD MAKING BIRTH A BREEZE Breeze Birthing has been helping expectant mothers and their birth partners to have positive and empowering hypnobirths for the past three years.

Jane and Andy Wallington from Bassingbourn, followed their midwife’s advice during their second pregnancy and prepared for birth by attending hypnobirthing antenatal classes. Equipped with the tools and techniques, their daughter, Jessica, now 4, was born fast asleep in the water, at The Rosie Maternity Hospital, and free of pain and interventions, which ngs – Villages Edition specialists said Jane would most likely need.

r Aug 2014

The business has been so successful that Sammy Lewis has now joined the pg: 45x60mm landscape team. Sammy, who lives in Royston with her husband Mark, attended Breeze Birthing classes last year. Sammy was so

empowered by their hypnobirth in October, that she too trained as a practitioner when her daughter, Evan, was just four months old.

SAMMY AND DANIEL

Jane and Sammy are now delighted to be working together in Breeze Birthing, with Sammy now offering classes in Buntingford and also due to be taking over the classes in Baldock at Amber Health. Breeze Birthing are proud to teach The Wise Hippo Birthing Programme, accredited by the Royal College of Midwives.

A Golfer’s Tale

A golfer went out golfing, in the hot midsu mmer sun, His drea m, that day, apparently, to score a hole in one, He was deep in concentration, but then something caught his eye He saw a row of hearses, on the road, just passing by,

He stopped his ga me of golf and quietly stood so still instead, He removed his golfers cap, and then he slowly bowed his head He felt deep in his pockets, took his hanky, blew his nose And said “so sad, so very sad, but that’s the way it goes,” “Did you know her?” His opponent asked, astonished by his tears “Well, yes,” ca me the reply. “She was my wife for thirty years….” ©Jan jack 2012

GARDENS OPEN IN MAY FOR BRITISH RED CROSS Open Gardens allows keen gardeners to share their passion, while helping people in crisis. Meanwhile, you can go along for a nosey - and maybe get a cup of tea and slice of cake. Other gardens go even further and offer cream teas, light lunches, plant sales, treasure trails and more. From March until September, you can visit gardens all over the country – including some never seen before by the public. These are local and open in May!

Lower Gatley

This is a very beautiful, informal and peaceful country garden, set in around 1 ½ acres. The main feature is a lovely natural chalk steam near the house, edged with marginal plants and a bog garden. A new ‘child-safe’ kitchen garden was created in 2010.

Wheelchair accessible. By kind permission of Mr and Mrs R. Coladangelo. £4 per adult, under 16 free

Docwra’s Manor

Explore 2 ½ acres of choice plants, in a series of enclosed gardens. There is also an exceptional plantsman’s garden. Wheelchairs possible but difficult in some areas. By kind permission of Mrs John Raven. £4 per adult, under 16 free

Docwra’s Manor, 2 Meldreth Road, Shepreth SG8 6PS, 17th May, 2-5pm

Growing your YOUR own vegetables difficult & EDIBLE isn’t the results will be GARDEN really tasty!

Weeds will take nutrients, light and water from your plants so weeding regularly is a must.

Plant asparagus, seed potatoes and autumn maturing rhubarb (the autumn harvesting varieties don’t have summer dormancy unlike the traditional varieties).

For the best flavour harvest asparagus spears when still under 18cm tall.

 

Potatoes still need earthing up.

Thin out direct-sown vegetable seedlings such as spinach, carrot and lettuce. Make sure you water the rows well.

Harden off outdoor tomatoes, courgettes and pumpkins ready for planting out next month.

Brassicas and leeks can be sown in their final positions now.

Carrot fly will be apparent soon so protect crops with horticultural fleece.

Broad beans are likely to suffer from blackfly, you can minimise this by pinching out the growing shoots as soon as beans appear at the base of the plant.

Runner beans and peas will need to be supported. Canes for the beans and twiggy sticks or netting for the peas.

In the greenhouse continue to prick out and pot on seedlings and cuttings.

Greenhouse tomatoes can be planted in growing bags or beds.

Ventilate greenhouses on warm days and damp down on hot days. Blinds or shade paint are a good way to even out fluctuations in temperature.

Beautiful gardens begin at Bickerdikes... 01462 673 333 www.bickerdikes.co.uk

MAY LAWN TIPS Thankfully the cool conditions which prevailed for much of March and April have now given way to warmer weather and more regular lawn cutting will be needed. Mowing encourages the grass to send out side shoots which thickens the sward and gives the effect of filling in small gaps in the lawn. Blade height can also be lowered. Lawn weeds are becoming more evident and now is a good time to treat them using a selective herbicide. This is a product which, applied at the correct dosage, will affect only the weeds and not the grass. The combined lawn treatment products available from garden centres are normally a granular blend and represent a compromise when it comes to dealing with the weeds. A better idea is to apply a liquid herbicide which will prove more reliable than using a granular

compound. Applied correctly it will be effective on both annual weeds, such as dandelion and thistle, and perennial weeds such as clover and buttercup. If you haven’t done so already, the application of a lawn feed will also provide the grass with essential nutrients during the transition into faster growth. Don’t be tempted to apply a little extra than indicated by the guidelines as lawn scorch could result. During spells of drier weather, areas which underwent lawn renovation and seeding will require watering. The last few weeks have seen precious little rainfall and a dry seed-bed will result in poor germination For help and assistance on lawn related matters please get in touch with your local lawn expert.

YOU’RE BRILLIANT – BUT AT WHAT? Within the team that you work in, live with or manage, there’ll be one thing that you are particularly noted for. Are you the creative one, the salesman, a people person, the organiser, fantastic with figures, do you make terrific tea?

Everybody has a skill that they are able to deliver better than the majority of their peers. And whilst many business owners believe they have more than most, it’s highly unlikely they have enough of all the skills needed to run a successful business alone (as opposed to just a money-making hobby). Let me explain: Your business is a bit like your car – it needs an engine, transmission, cooling, fuel, tyres – without all of these working well together, it won’t do very well. I remember back when I was an impressionable teenager, a young man turned up at the farm where I was working to visit my boss. He wheelspan into the yard in a brand new Mustang sports car - super cool!

able to do its job well enough, the huge V8 engine couldn’t rumble into life, the fat tyres couldn’t wheel spin out of the yard and the beautiful piece of imported engineering was effectively useless. You get the picture? So consider what the critical elements of your business are, and who’s going to do them today, and in the future? And do those people (including you) have the skills to do them well enough, or will your business be grinding to a halt in a forlorn farm yard? This month, look for areas where you have no natural ability or where you have a weakness (come on, be honest!), because business success depends on you getting someone more skilled than you to do them. And next month I’ll show you how to build this winning team!

GOING POTTY FOR SUMMER PLANTS I am a great fan of hanging baskets, window boxes and patio containers, but this year why not include some unusual containers and planters to bring a different look or even a bit of humour to your garden? You can use almost anything as a planter. I have seen some really crazy plantings in disused hand basins, loo cisterns or even the lavatory itself! If you are using something like a hand basin which only has one plug hole in the bottom, make sure that you cover it with pieces of broken crock and then perhaps put an inch or two of coarse gravel in the bottom of the container before you put the compost in. But there are plenty of other normal household objects which can be used. How about that old watering can that’s sprung a leak? Whether you have a traditional galvanised can or a more modern plastic one, you can have great fun planting it up with bedding, particularly if you choose something like trailing blue lobelia to come spurting out of the top and perhaps even the end. Buckets, too, can look really good fun and if you have one which still has its handle firmly attached, then you could use it as a hanging basket. Old footwear can be turned into planting with real flair. If you use old gardening boots or a pair of shoes, you are unlikely to need to add extra drainage as they invariably drain well. But if you are going to recycle a pair of wellies, then you may need to punch a few holes. Again, cascading

plants can look particularly dramatic, but a bunch of bright red geraniums or the spiky hedgehog-like foliage of a bright green or variegated grass can look particularly eye-catching. See if there’s anything in your kitchen cupboards that could be recycled. An old saucepan, casserole pot or even a mixing bowl or jug can make an attractive planter. If the container is large and there are no drainage holes in it, then the other option is to plant it up as a mini bog garden and use moisture-loving plants in it such as hostas or pond-side irises. Colanders or sieves also make interesting and unusual hanging baskets. You can simply plant one or two upright specimens in the centre of the colander and then use plenty of trailing plants around the edge and allow them to cascade down. You could even create your own living tea set with an old sizeable teapot and some large mugs full of favourite summer bedding. All these containers can be treated in just the same way as a container that you have bought from the garden centre. As I mention, drainage is of great importance, but when it comes to choosing a compost and the plants themselves, you need nothing any different from when you are planting up a more traditional container and believe me you can have a lot more fun! We all look forward to the summer months and hope for lovely sunny weather and flowers blooming all summer long, but as any real gardener will tell you this takes careful planning. The structure of the space sets the scene for the summer flowering display. Hedges define the shape of the borders and create a back drop for the planting in front. Beech or Yew are my favourite hedging plants for shoulder to head high enclosure. It is good to allow the garden to reveal itself, so consider positioning hedging to screen a view and manipulate your curiosity. Definition can also be achieved with low box hedging for example, which makes a strong shape on the ground and looks great

with billowing herbaceous planting growing out of it. Well positioned seating area is key to spending time appreciating the garden in the summer. BUDDING SCIENTISTS

Icknield Walk First School in Royston invited ten parents, who work as scientists, into school for the day to explain the science in our everyday lives. Science specialist teacher at the school Mrs Marissa Fisk explained: “All the children received a ‘passport’ to fill in as they tried out different activities. “The activities included testing different coatings and materials, racing raisins, identifying different smells, and making a helicopter from paper. Year 3 pupils at took part in the Royal Society of Chemistry’s Global Experiment finding out how much water disposable and cloth nappies can hold. Their data was entered into the global database and the children loved being able to see their results alongside those from other schools from around the world. “All the children and staff had a great time trying things out, and the children really enjoyed the hands-on experiences.

WONDERFUL WALES Seventy five year seven pupils from Greneway School had a wonderful week in Wales before the Easter Holidays. The pupils, led by teachers from Greneway School, spent five days using the beautiful town of Caernarvon as their base. Among the exciting day trips were the opportunity to explore the Caernarvon Castle, take a walk on Snowdon, visit an eco friendly theme park and take part in a trial at Beaumaris Courthouse and Gaol. They arrived back in school with many stories to tell and adventures to share - a great time was had by all.

CAM CITY WI HOSTS MIKRON THEATRE Raising Agents

Mikron Theatre has produced its unique brand of theatre for 43 years. It is the only theatre company to tour England by narrowboat, travelling along canals and rivers, and mooring up at canal-side venues such as pubs, village halls, marinas and dry docks. And now a church! This year, Mikron Theatre has joined forces with the National Federation of Women’s Institutes (WI) to produce Raising Agents, a brand new show marking the centenary of the founding of the WI in Britain. Cam City WI is delighted to present the only performance of Raising Agents in Cambridgeshire, at St Andrew’s Baptist Church in the heart of Cambridge. Raising Agents is set around Bunnington WI, a branch that is a bit down-at-heel. Dwindling membership means they can barely afford the hall, let alone a decent speaker. So when a PR guru becomes a member, the women are glad of new blood. Initially. The milk of WI kindness begins to sour when she re-brands them the Bunnington Bunnies. They’re hopping. With stakes higher than a five-tiered cake stand, a battle ensues for the very soul of Bunnington and perhaps the WI itself!

From the moment that Raising Agents starts, with member Ange bringing the branch into disrepute with her yarn-bombing direct action, it’s easy to see how Mikron Theatre Company has gained a reputation for bringing stories to life with high-energy performances full of fun and frolics. The show has a strong musical element. The original music has been composed by female duo O’Hooley and Tidow, awardwinning musicians and song-writers, who were recently nominated as Best Duo at the BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards. Their latest album, The Hum, received outstanding reviews in the national and music press.

Tickets for Raising Agents, hosted by Cam City WI on Friday 29th May, can be purchased at www.eventbrite.co.uk Tickets cost £12 (£10 concessions). A booking fee applies. Doors will open at 6.30pm, and there will be lovely homemade refreshments available before the performance. For further information about the event please call 07816 816665 or email: camcitywi@gmail.com

On the threshold of one WI century, into the next, this tale of hobbyists and lobbyists asks how much we should know about our past or how much we should let go of it. Above all else, like the WI itself, Raising Agents is a story about friendship.
