Out & About It’s Time for a pantomime Or three! It’s that time of year again where drama groups across the country brush the dust off of their costumes and step back onto the stage for their annual pantomimes. This is certainly the case for local drama group, CADS, who are gearing up ready to perform their current production of Mother Goose. Alison Bass, Director, says “Rehearsals are going extremely well and the cast and crew are working very hard to ensure that another fantastic pantomime is brought to the Royston audiences in January.” The pantomime, written by TLC Creative, will be crammed full of all the usual family favourites: a goodie, a baddie, and a Dame. Not forgetting the unusual

MUSEUM MUSINGS: As well as looking after objects, museums play an important role in looking after stories. We’re lucky to have access to the Royston Crow newspapers from 1855 onwards. We often come across some interesting stories in these, usually while searching for something else! A few snippets our volunteers have uncovered include royal visits – Queen Wilhelmina stopping for breakfast at the Banyers in the 1930s and the Queen Mother opening the Police Station in the 1990s. Do you remember this?

Research is being carried out on the Workhouse giving a voice to the people who spent time there. Things we now take as normal but were once new fangled are reported. The Co-op on the High Street becoming a self-service store in 1960 was described as fashionable.

Spotlight On... Wimpole Park Run On 11th January, runners of all ages and abilities in and around Royston celebrate Wimpole Estate parkrun’s fifth birthday. The statistics for those first five years at Wimpole
are truly mind-boggling… 9,000 runners at 252 parkruns covering more than 310,000 kms – that’s nearly eight times around the earth, representing over 3.5 years of non-stop running!
parkrunners and volunteers. One of the joys of parkrun is that it’s for everyone. If you’re flagging, someone’s will say ‘come on, keep it going’ or if you’re walking up the hill someone will say ‘push on, it’s downhill at the next bit’”.
Held every Saturday at 9am, hundreds of runners (493 on one memorable occasion) of all shapes and sizes discover the delights of a healthy run / walk / bit-of-both around a 5 kms route taking in the beautiful National Trust Wimpole Estate, 8 miles north of Royston. The run is free, the only cost is parking (free to NT members) and the coffee and cake afterwards - an important part of the event.
For other regulars, the delights of Wimpole parkrun are as many and varied as the runners themselves. For Amélie Kirchgaessner it’s “the most beautiful course, the loveliest parkrun family, the yummiest sausage rolls, the best way to start the weekend”. Another parkrunner, Melody King, says “parkrun that taught me to love hills, with the friendliest volunteers and runners.” For marshal Diane Bunch, Wimpole is “the most beautiful place to volunteer, standing in a field full of cows is the best way to start your day.”
Richard Lyle was Wimpole’s first Event Director and it was he who, along with former Wimpole Estate General Manager Chris Hurcomb and a team of volunteers, got the Wimpole parkrun up and… running, back in January 2013.
Runners of all ages, some with four legs, brave the weather for the second Wimpole parkrun in January 2013
Richard is honest but encouraging about the Wimpole circuit “In spite of that [the demands of a short steep hill and running on grass] it’s very beginner-friendly, because of the support that runners get around the course from other
Above all, parkrun (yes – parkrun with a small p) is a run not a race; it’s about building a community and having fun as much as developing healthy habits. That said, all parkrunner times can be individually recorded using free barcodes (that can be used at any of the 486 weekly parkruns across the UK) so enthusiasts can measure their progress. Wimpole parkrun is for anyone and everyone, and volunteer marshals are also always welcome. Royston parkrun anyone? Not convinced? From Tallulah’s Kitchen Treacle Tart Hello my fellow foodies...
... and welcome to 2018 and indeed another bright and shiny New Year! I hope you have all had the most fabulous Christmas and are enjoying the New Year. I have to warn you that this month’s recipe is not for you if you have just started a New Year’s diet, but what joy is life if you can’t treat yourself to a little slice of homemade comfort occasionally? Perhaps get a balance with a long walk, the bright frosty mornings in January are beautiful, just remember to wrap up warm! Ingredients 250g Flour 75g Caster sugar 125g Butter. Straight from the fridge works best 3 Eggs from happy free running chickens! 200g breadcrumbs allow to stale slightly 600g syrup
Finely grated zest of one lemon 1+1/2 tbsp lemon juice 3 tbsp double cream Let’s begin by making the pastry base. Method Sieve the pastry into a large bowl. Cut up the butter into small dice and rub into the flour until they are the texture of fine breadcrumbs. Now add the sugar again using the “rubbing in” movement to work the sugar into the crumbs. Make a well in the centre of the mixture and add the egg, using your hand, work together the mixture until all the ingredients come together and form a ball. Take care not to over work the mixture as this will cause the pastry to shrink and to become tough and hard instead of the light and crispy texture we are aiming for. At this stage you should cling wrap your pastry and leave it to rest for an hour in the fridge. When you are ready, roll out the pastry to roughly 5mm thick and line a 20cm flan tin. Excess pastry can be frozen, or my personal favourite is to whip up a tray of jam tarts! Blind bake the pastry case at approximately 180°C until the

pastry is cooked but still pale in colour. In a saucepan gently warm the syrup. Doing this will not only make it thinner and more manageable but also the warmer temperature will help infuse the flavours from the lemon zest more readily. So while the syrup is warm, add the lemon zest, the bread crumbs, the lemon juice, 2 eggs and the double cream. Stir all the ingredients together well and leave to rest for 5 minutes. Now pour the breadcrumb mixture on to the pastry and bake at approximately 150°c for 40 minutes until the tart is cooked through and the top is an even golden brown colour. Leave to cool off slightly before cutting, dusting with icing sugar and serving with lashings of cream or custard or ice cream... whatever takes your fancy! For those times when you feel like experimenting, you could add some chopped stemmed
ginger and a healthy measure of ginger wine or orange based liquor to the breadcrumb mixture before cooking. Perhaps a more “child friendly” version could include dark chocolate chips or cocoa and the finely grated zest of an orange or two. White chocolate chips paired with freeze dried raspberry pieces are also a delicious combination. A handful of chopped pecan or pistachio nuts, swirled through, would give an interesting texture. I’d love to hear your favourite flavour combinations. Until next time my fellow foodies...

Cosy Nights In With Beer & Food It’s January, it’s cold and it gets darker early. So, at this time of year there are few things more welcome than a cosy night in. Wholesome food, good telly to relax in front of and, of course, the right drink - that’s where beer comes in.
Beer is your perfect partner for snug evenings at home. Imagine, you’ve lovingly cooked a steak pie, what better way to bring out the best in it than with a sturdy bitter. Bitters possess just the right flavour intensity to match the rich, dense flavours of a pie. They’re often well balanced between malt sweetness and hop
bitterness, perhaps leaning more heavily on the former. The caramel taste will pick out the sweetness in the meat and the pastry and complement it beautifully. There’s also enough carbonation in the bottled version of these beers to cut through the texture of the pie and refresh the palate. Some to look out for: Fuller’s ESB, Sharp’s Doom Bar, Adnams Southwold and Marston’s Pedigree. A comforting fish pie is fresh out of the oven and you’re ready to tuck in. There’s only one drink that can marry perfectly with all those fishy flavours - beer is best! Here you have a couple of options, both of which match the intensity of a fish pie: lager and wheat beer. Lagers are crisp, clean and offer a bready sweetness and some subtle citrus which are going to complement the fish very well. They’re also well carbonated so they’re great palate cleansers. Look
out for Mahou, Pravha and Five Points Pils. Wheat beers are light, spritzy and fruity so also do a superb job of complementing the fish and refreshing the mouth in between bites, but they have a creamy mouthfeel which melds well with the creaminess of the pie. If you want something easy and hassle-free it doesn’t come much simpler than cheese on toast. Here a pale ale makes a perfect cheesy partner. Classic English pales like Timothy Taylor’s Landlord have a subtle caramel sweetness and fruity tang from the hops. Both characteristics are going to spike some fruity sweetness in the cheese and really lift the flavour. American pale ales also work wondrously well and the flavour intensity is often turned up a notch or two. Try Lagunitas IPA, Goose Island IPA or Thornbridge Jaipur. For ultimate ease on a cosy
night-in there’s nothing quite like a takeaway, particularly an Indian curry. For the perfect beer match focus on the intensity of the heat in your chosen dish. If you like a mild curry, pale ales and IPAs are great and will add some depth of flavour. If you prefer a medium spiced dish a bitter is a good option, where the beer will temper the heat and bring out the sweetness in the food. Or if you like the heat turned all the way up, reach for a temperature dampening wheat beer and then put your feet up.

Mercy Ships
Mercy Ships operates the largest civilian hospital ship in the world, delivering vital, free healthcare to some of the world’s poorest countries. This “floating hospital” is staffed almost entirely by volunteers, who give their expertise for free to help treat dental and eye problems, cleft lips and palates, tumours, club feet, childbirth injuries, burns and a variety of other conditions. However, this healthcare costs money and Mercy Ships use their funds to perform the surgeries and run the ship, so volunteers are asked to raise their own funds

Broxbourne Wood Sculpture walk What can be nicer on a crisp winter’s day than a walk in beautiful woodland? A visit to Broxbourne Wood boasts the added advantage of a sculpture trail! This easy 1km circuit makes it suitable for little ones and, if the route is followed anti-clockwise it is accessible to wheelchair users.
walk around, including areas of pine, planted to produce fast growing timber, areas of young native trees that are gradually being encouraged to replace the pine and return the wood to its natural character and areas of coppiced hornbeam. Coppicing is where trees are grown as a crop and harvested every 20 years or so. The stumps of the trees then grow again to yield another crop 20 years later. Today this kind of work is done by volunteers to help preserve the special habitat for the plants and animals that live here. Look out for the ‘deer baskets’ built by volunteers to help protect the new hornbeam shoots from browsing deer. There are also open areas, kept in check by livestock grazing. Letting the sunlight in encourages all sorts of wildlife including butterflies like the White Admiral and reptiles like the Common Lizard. Wetter areas and ponds are enjoyed particularly by birds, newts and also Grass Snakes.
Broxbourne Wood is owned and managed by Hertfordshire County Council, one of four woodlands that make up Hertfordshire’s only National Nature Reserve (NNR). NNRs are nationally important for wildlife. You will see a variety of habitats on your

Three Generations make Music Great fun was had by everyone at Mary Barfield House before Christmas as young families made a musical visit to the care home for the elderly in Royston. Care manager Rosie Jeffries was delighted to see so much interaction between young and old. She said ‘It lifted our spirits to have three generations playing together in our lounge and we are still talking about it.’ Linda Bance who runs music sessions in Royston said ‘seeing the babies and
children singing, moving and playing whilst the residents joined in and moved to the music was heart warming. So many precious moments came forth and made us realise just what a universal language for well being music really is’. We are really hoping that we can continue this work in the new year. Think Garden, Think Richard Garden Focus... Plan for the Year Ahead Melbourn garden designer, Richard Arnott Happy new year! In my series of articles for 2018, designing with plants, I am going to be discussing how best to bring a garden to life with planting. I aim to get you thinking differently about how to use plants, we are very colour obsessive but there are other elements that a plant can offer a space long after the flowers have faded. This month I want to explore winter silhouettes and stems.
have mound forming habits such as Hebe, Lavender or Choisya, whilst others grow horizontally like Cornus controversa ‘Variegata’ or Viburnum plicatum ‘Lanarth’. When the leaves have vanished from deciduous shrubs a striking plant form will offer real interest to the winter months! Transparency that allows the light to shine through a plant can offer a lovely effect at this time of year. Many shrubs can have a dense habit, especially if left unpruned. I love to use multi stem trees such as Amelanchier lamarkii, Prunus serrula or Betula utilis ‘Jacquemontii’. These type of trees have become very popular as they allow clients to have vertical interest without taking up too much space. The old adage “right plant, right place” is so true for tree selection. The Japanese Acer palmatum ‘Bloodgood’ has great garden worthiness because it looks good through spring, summer, autumn and winter. Many of my clients are impatient gardeners which allows me the luxury of planting semi mature plants, but more often than not if the soil preparation is good smaller plants soon catch up.
Striking plant forms can make a big impact in your planting design during the winter months. When I design a planting scheme I like to develop a plant palette which is based on plant worthiness over multiple seasons of interest and plant form is important too. Try to think of the shape that a plant makes if you view it in black and white. Some plants
Grants available North Herts Centre for Voluntary Service (NHCVS) is a membership organisation that provides support for local charities, community groups and new start up projects in
order to help them carry out their work effectively, and ensure that they are well represented.
Pretty silhouettes with the low winter sunshine always lift my spirits on a cold, sunny, winter day. Hardy perennials with strong stems and seed heads look especially pretty blended with grasses and carefully chosen shrubs. The modern trend is to use smaller shrubs that can be clipped to maintain their form to contrast with the more naturalistic perennial and grass forms. I like to use shrubs such as Sarcococca digyna, Choisya ‘Aztec Pearl’, Photinia ‘Little Red Robin’ or box balls. The mound form contrasted with the vertical works well to extend season. I like to have a good ratio of evergreen shrubs in my mixed borders to keep the interest but the great thing about working with plants is that the picture is always changing. So when the lush growth of hardy perennials and grasses takes off in the spring the shrubbery recedes ready to be revealed again in the colder months. Stem habit should be considered too when choosing a plant palette for a new planting scheme. We talked about the horizontal form of Cornus controversa ‘Variegata’, but why not consider contorted growth too. The cork screw hazel Corylus
avellana ‘Contorta’ not only has pretty, twisted, curly growth but has lovely yellow catkins in February. This shrub would make a good focal point in a border or could be used either side of a path to frame the transition from one area of the garden into another. Stem texture and colour form an integral part of a winter based plant palette. We have discussed plant form and growth habit but bark texture and colour are interesting too. Most keen gardeners will be familiar with the use of dog woods in the garden, but why not use them alongside evergreen mounding forms in the mixed border. Acer griseum is a lovely smaller tree with pretty peeling bark. This could be happily used as a vertical accent in a mixed border too. For more in depth plant advice or garden design help please get in touch.

What’s your favourite local place to eat?
Ooo tons of things. My family and the families I support, my friends and my ‘jobs’.
We’re lucky for choice in Royston and the surrounding area. Campaign has been working for nearly five years to complete the pedestrian/cycle path along the A10 from Cambridge to Royston. The path is now complete from Cambridge to Melbourn which leaves the last section between Melbourn and Royston. This is particularly important as the existing path (officially for pedestrian use only) is narrow and badly surfaced and leads to a dangerous crossing over the A505. There is a clear need and demand for this project to succeed! There is no safe way to walk/cycle between Royston to Melbourn, but there are several large businesses in both Melbourn and Royston whose employees
would cycle to work if it were safe to do so. There are leisure cyclists who rarely visit Royston because of the lack of safe cycle links to the north of Royston and residents in Melbourn who would cycle into Royston to shop. There is obviously a suppressed demand. So, we are asking you to get involved in the Campaign and help move the project forward. Celebrating 20 Years This year Stage Right will be celebrating 20 years under the direction of Principal Kerry Hay. The celebrations will begin with an open day at the studios on Saturday 6th January and culminate in a celebratory show at the Gordon Craig Theatre on Sunday 18th November 2018. Stage Right prides itself on being a school for everyone from beginners to advanced and boys and girls from two years old through to adults are welcomed. There is an extensive timetable of evening and weekend classes in a range of dance styles and also drama and singing. The four dance studios are air conditioned, have mirrored walls, multi purpose dance floors and ballet barres. There is a smaller 5th studio, a coffee bar and reception area, changing facilities and even a play house for the little ones! The ground floor studio has a glass wall which is fantastic for our younger students who find it particularly comforting to know Mummy or Daddy is still there. With 4 children of her own Kerry knows how important it is that the studio is a safe and relaxed, family orientated environment. Stage Right is a home from home to many students and Kerry and her team are now teaching the children of her original students! Former students drop in all the time to catch up and it makes Kerry just as proud hearing that a former student has joined the tap dance society at their university as it does to turn on her TV and see a former student making a living dancing with Taylor Swift! Many students take

advantage of the package deal which allows students to attend as many age and ability appropriate classes as they wish to per week for a substantially reduced fee. Stage Right is the only school in the area to offer this kind of discount on fees. As well as the very busy evening and weekend classes Stage Right introduced a full time, government funded course for 16-18 year olds in 2014. This course is an alternative to sixth form for students who wish to pursue a career in Dance/Musical Theatre. The students gain a BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma which is the equivalent UCAS credits to 3 A Levels. Students attend from all over the country and the school has received exceptional BTEC results and 100% of auditioning second years have been accepted on to 3 year degree and diploma courses. Stage Right’s teachers are all highly qualified with the appropriate examining boards, have trained professionally and many have had extensive performing careers. All are DBS checked and Safeguarding trained. The majority of the teachers including Kerry are local people who have grown up in the area and have settled back here after training and performing. Students are incredibly lucky to work with teachers such as Joshua Robinson who is currently performing in Dreamgirls in the Westend. The street dance teachers travel from London and are currently performing professionally ensuring the classes are up to date - a must with this style. They say a true measure of a dance school is the results they produce and in this area Stage Right cannot be rivalled. The school continues to have phenomenal success at dance competitions in Herts, Cambs,
Beds and, Essex and most impressively the All England Dance Competition which saw Stage Right students in the regional finals and Ella Carolan through to the finals in 2015 and 2017 coming 3rd in the Country in 2015. This is coupled with excellent exam results with at least three sessions being held annually and an outstanding show every 16-18 months. Kerry and her team have the highest success rate in the area when it comes to students gaining places on degree and diploma courses at the country’s top colleges for dance and musical theatre. Graduating students can be seen in the West end, UK Tours, Strictly Live Shows, X Factor, Brit Awards, Films, TV Presenting and Modeling. Most recently Megan Bembridge who left the school back in July ,after gaining a place at Bird College, was selected to dance with Rak Su, Wyclef Jean and Naughty Boy on the X Factor final! Stage Right was established in 1978 and in 1998 former student Kerry Hay took over the reigns. Kerry found the school it’s own premises in Melbourn Street in 2000 and school ran happily from these studios for 11 years. Growing student numbers meant a move to larger premises was essential. Kerry purchased a unit in Lumen Road and an extensive refurbishment took place over the Summer of 2011. The state of the art studios were opened by “So You Think You Can Dance” 2011 winner Matt Flint in the September of that year. September 2017 saw Stage Right open an extra studio. “The Warehouse” is a large space with high ceilings which can be used for in house performances.

It has been another successful year for MTC with some great results. We have had new members taking part in their first triathlons, age group winners, GB qualifiers and several athletes completing half and full ironman distances. In addition, various members have competed in cycling, running and swimming events, all with the encouragement and support of the club and its members. Triathlons start again in the spring but our training continues throughout the year. Club sessions are tailored for all abilities with experienced coaches helping everyone to become the best they can be. Already our members have signed up for 18

New Year’s Wild Resolutions . . .
Knit for your Health
Have you resolved to get fit after festive indulgence? Nature and wildlife is good for our health: fact. Working outside with a group of like-minded people is really good for wellbeing, making us feel better, happier and more connected to others (if doctors could prescribe nature in a tablet form they would - that’s a pill not an electrical device . . .)
Our cover images was inspired by this story. Knit for Peace has just published a report on The Health Benefits of Knitting, backed by a survey of over 1000 knitters, provides evidence based research showing that knitting:
faith in human nature.”
A survey for the Wildlife Trusts (conducted by the University of Essex in November) showed how health and wellbeing are significantly boosted by spending time exercising outdoors – and especially by volunteering.
The Wildlife Trust BCN run regular weekly work parties on Cambridgeshire nature reserves and, along with the exercise, those involved experience a tangible sense of fun and engagement (often accompanied by a well earned outdoor slice of cake and a cuppa), and knowing that the environment is benefitting is a powerful feelgood factor.
Read more here www. wildlifebcn.org/work-parties or contact the Trust for details on volunteering at cambridgeshire@wildlifebcn.org
Of the volunteers who took part in the Wildlife Trusts survey, more than two thirds had a greater sense of wellbeing within six weeks, with overwhelmingly positive feedback quotes ranging from: “I feel more connected to nature and my environment and have developed interests in this area,” to “it’s restoring my

Knit for Peace (an initiative of The Charities Advisory Trust) provides an outlet for 20,000 knitters in the UK, distributing donated knitting, blankets, clothes, twiddlemuffs etc to those in need ranging from refugees from Syria and Iraq in Kurdistan, street children in India, homeless projects and hospitals in the UK; in fact to over 300 organisations.

Shop No.3 Royston on Melbourn Street sells craft supplies including a wide variety of yarn. Owner Laura Whitford knows about craft therapy from personal experience. She says, “I’ve had bouts of depression throughout my life and can honestly say that knitting and crochet have helped me overcome them. Having something creative to do is very therapeutic, whether you’re a beginning or expert knitter or crocheter. No.3 will be announcing dates for workshops in 2018 very soon, so come along and find out for yourself how any type of craft can combat a variety of health problems.”
And how does this save the www.number3royston.co.uk NHS and care providers money? The report shows for www.knitforpeace.org.uk the over 60’s, knitting makes them feel more resilient, better able to cope. Knitting for others

Giving Effective Feedback For those who were kind enough to ask, I was lucky enough to be successful in my recent job application, and now have extra management responsibility!
One of my first jobs was to assess a colleague’s performance and offer feedback – never a problem for a critical person like me. But how to deliver it without potentially upsetting the individual? Some research I read recently highlighted that positive feedback and praise increases commitment to the work people do, by enhancing both their experience and their confidence. On the other hand, negative feedback (‘here’s where you went wrong…’) is informative; it tells people where they need to spend their effort, and offers insight into how they might improve. It also suggested that ‘novices’ (people with less experience and knowledge, such as children, perhaps) sought and responded best to positive feedback and ‘experts’ (people with high level of experience and knowledge) sought and appreciated negative feedback as it helped them improve. The key to negative feedback is that it should be constructive, like the Royston schools, ‘What went well…’ and ‘Even better if…’ approach
to feedback: praising the positives whilst still encouraging continuous improvement. As teenagers are revising for GCSEs at the moment, I was also interested to read a piece from Columbia University highlighting the distinction between praising effort versus praising talent. ‘Praising children’s intelligence, far from boosting their self-esteem, encourages them to embrace self-defeating behaviours such as worrying about failure and avoiding risks, ‘ proposed the researchers, ‘However, when children are taught the value of concentrating and working hard, this encourages them to sustain their motivation, performance, and self-esteem.’

“I want the comfort of fixed fees which don’t increase every year”
So my New Year’s resolution is going to be to try hard to acknowledge effort and improvement, so hopefully everyone won’t be afraid to try new things, they will be more likely to innovate and won’t be scared of making mistakes to get better. What do you think? Feel free to offer me some feedback! julian@julianberry.co.uk
