Welcome
Next Deadline
The first of March marks the official start of Spring! It is here at last and there are sights and sounds to prove it all over our beautiful countryside.
Thursday 15th March
In Roman times March was the beginning of the season for both farming and warfare and the festivals held in his honour during the month were mirrored by others in October, when the season for these activities came to a close. Did you know that Great Britain and its colonies continued to use 25th March as the first day of the year until 1752? That’s why the fiscal year in the UK continues to begin on the 6th April! We hope that you enjoy this month’s articles and features. We always aim to have something for everyone and this issue is no exception.

Loving Local Living Parent’s Tips & Tricks
bumpkins toddler Tips
a great night’s s sleep!
When your child hasn’t slept well, they don’t quite seem like themselves, their concentration is reduced and this has a huge impact on their ability to learn and have fun. Our tips will help you achieve a great night’s sleep! Keep to a routine. Children love routines; a “goodnight routine” tells the child that it’s time to prepare for bed and they therefore find it easier to nod off to sleep. Use routine language. Use verbal signals and softer, reassuring language to show that it’s time for bed. Goodnight stories. Use stories that your children are familiar with or have enjoyed reading at nursery. Use Praise. It’s important for your children to know what they have done well during the day. Try a routine bed time rhyme, perhaps whilst rocking your child in your arms or lap. Mercy Ships Mercy Ships is a charity that runs an enormous hospital ship, crewed by volunteers, that provides free surgery and medical care to some of the poorest people in the world. Here is a story about how Mercy Ships transformed one family’s life in Africa. “When I gave birth to Dorkas, she was a healthy baby,” says her mother, Nicole. But soon she realised that her daughter was constantly squinting. Then, three years later, Nicole had a second daughter, Anna. “I couldn’t believe it,” says Nicole. “Her vision was even worse than her sister’s.”
Anna and Dorkas were operated on in the same morning. Six-year-old Dorkas came through fine, but Nicole was far more worried about her younger daughter, two-year-old Anna, because her vision had been much worse.
To have not one, but two, children who could not see weighed heavily on Nicole, who was raising her children alone. “Was this because of some sin I have committed?” she wondered. “Is it a curse?”
After Anna’s surgery, volunteer eye surgeon Dr Bob Burlingame went to the wards looking for Nicole, who had stepped out. “I asked the translator to tell her that everything went very, very well, and that I expected Anna to see much, much better,” he says.
In reality, the little girls’ condition was genetic. Dorkas and Anna were just two of the 320,000 blind children in sub-Saharan Africa. Most of these children would be able to see if they had access to modern medicine.
The translator left the room, and only seconds later Dr Bob heard Nicole shout from the other end of the hall, “Praise God! Praise God! Mercy has saved my baby’s sight!” And she came running down the hall, shouting and praising God.
Nicole didn’t know that her children’s condition could be cured, but she sought help anyway. She took her daughters to the national hospital in Togo. An ophthalmologist examined the girls and quickly diagnosed their condition as cataracts. But there was no surgeon to help them.
Transform a life today. Support Mercy Ships by visiting: www.mercyships.org.uk
“We waited and waited and waited,” says Nicole. Nothing ever came of it. Then Nicole heard that Mercy Ships hospital ship, the Africa Mercy, was close by, and they could treat children’s cataracts. “I went hopefully to them,” she says, making the trip from Togo to neighbouring Benin. It was worth all the effort. Nicole left the patient screening site with yellow cards – the signal that her daughters were scheduled for free surgeries. “It was then that I started to believe,” says Nicole. “But I was still praying and wondering if they would really be able to see after the operation. I was not yet confident.”
Dorkas and Anna share a snack after their treatment

Tracy Stressing
Tracy is a talented fused glass artist and has developed a range of unique pieces that are sold locally.
is unique and I love making and trying new ideas.
Tell us about your favourite local shop
Where are you hoping to go on holiday this year?
I have two favourite local shops. I love to visit No 3 Royston on Melbourn Street. I have been one of the crafters selling there since it opened - I love to see my fused glass work on display there! I also love All Things Birch and Beautiful in the Corn Exchange.
We go on holiday to Swanage in Dorset.
Describe your perfect Sunday
What is your signature dish?
My perfect Sunday would be spent walking our Border Collie Bessie, cooking a roast dinner and in the afternoon creating new ideas with my glass.
Roast beef and Yorkshire pudding.
What is your favourite book? Why is it special to you?
I have completed my Gold Duke of Edinburgh Award! As part of this I went on an exchange programme to Canada where I stayed for nearly a month. On completing my Gold I got invited to Buckingham Palace to collect it.
My favourite book is A Woman of Substance by Barbara Taylor Bradford. The central character Emma Harte is such an inspirational woman in terms of her hard work and her love for her family. What was the last film you watched? Did you enjoy it?
Tell us something about you that will surprise us!
Tracy Stressing, Make & Create www.makeandcreate.co.uk www.facebook com/MakeAndCreate
The last film I watched was Baby Driver. It had a great soundtrack of songs! What are you looking forward to in March? My birthday and wedding anniversary are both in March so I have lots to look forward to this month! What is the best advice you have ever been given? The best advice I have ever been given is have no regrets. I have always had a “have a go” philosophy. Whatever you do in life have a go - if it doesn’t work out, at least you tried. Tell us what you love about your job… I love creating new items from glass and sharing them. Each piece I make 10

MUSEUM MUSINGS: Women of Royston Looking around the museum, it becomes clear that a lot more is known about men in Royston’s history. From business owners, to artists and soldiers and even criminals! These people have important stories to tell and it’s great to know about their lives. Now it would be great to increase our knowledge of the women that have played a part in Royston’s history. We have wonderful stories about the work done by Royston women during the World Wars. Maud Bevan ran the hospital that took over Queen’s Road School during WWI. She was supported by a team of nurses working long hours caring for soldiers. A local book mentions the Stredder sisters who wrote children’s stories in the late 1800s. There is a reference to Miss Clark becoming one of the first qualified optometrists in the country. So far, we’ve struggled to uncover more about these women. Next to the railway station is a small collection of houses. These were built following a donation from Mrs Barfield. She set up these almshouses for poor widows, to provide them with a home during difficult times. Our volunteers remember the teacher Miss Onions, who always cycled from Barkway to school in Royston. One story goes that after heavy snowfall, the paths were too deep for bikes. So, she heaved her bike over her shoulder and carried it to school in case the snow had cleared by home time! Can you help identify more great women in Royston’s past? Contact assistant@roystonmuseum.org.uk www.roystonmuseum.org.uk

Great Chishill Windmill Trust The year has been a momentous one for the Trust. We began on the lowest possible note with the death of founding member and Chairman, Jim Brearley. Jim had been a driving force for the establishment of the Trust and the early work of surveying for bats and seeking Listed Building Consent. Both were clear by the beginning of the year but sadly, Jim did not see the fruits of his endeavour.
However, under the new Chair, Hazel Hayden, we have achieved funding that will allow the completion of structural work to make the mill safe and available for public access. Historic England (HE) provided major financial assistance with the aim of removing the building from the Heritage at Risk list. A significant sum was also donated by the Society for the Protection of Ancient Buildings (SPAB). South Cambs Community Chest provided funds for work on the trestle and the Parish Council has been generous in windshaft and sail assembly was hardly attached and was in danger of falling its support for our efforts. forwards which would see the sail assembly The most wonderful achievement, though, crash to the ground. is through the generosity of the villagers In effecting the repair to the weather beam, and Friends of the Windmill. Home & Garden
Think Garden, Think Richard
Garden Focus... Smaller shrub selection Melbourn garden designer, Richard Arnott We often want plants in the garden that will fill a space quickly, cover the bare earth fast or screen a new fence, but it is important to think about the mature size that a shrub will reach before selecting it for the border. As garden space is at a premium these days this is never more poignant. Here are a few things to consider when making your selection. The function a shrub needs to perform is important to consider before selection. By this I mean what purpose do you want it to achieve in the garden? Is it to be repeated through a border to give rhythm to a mixed planting scheme or has it got to fill a space under a downstairs window without getting too big and obscuring the light? Perhaps it is purely to look good with other plants in the garden that flower in the spring! Once you have identified the plants purpose you can make a more informed selection. I am always looking for new plant ideas and it was Photinia ‘Little Red Robin’ that caught my eye last year for its compact nature! Plant form and texture should always be considered after function. All plants have a preferred growth habit and leaf texture. As I have stressed in previous articles flowering colour is so fleeting that we need to have other attributes to stimulate the eye. We are all familiar with the strong, circular form of a box ball in the border and it is relevant to prune the shape you want but why not choose a plant that can grow in a particular way too. I have always gardened with Choisya ternata all my life but why not consider Choisya ‘Aztec Pearl’ which has a mound forming habit and narrower divided leaves. We all love a rosemary in the garden for cooking but why not choose Rosmarinus officinalis ‘Miss Jessops Upright’ that as the name suggests has an upright habit. Evergreen or deciduous is an important part of any plant selection process. When I am designing whole gardens I am often looking for a balance between the two depending on how low maintenance the garden needs to be. So the lower the maintenance the higher the proportion of evergreen in the planting palette. All the shrubs mentioned so far have been evergreen and as such are a tick in the box of all year round interest! In some ways deciduous shrubs need to work a little harder to earn their place. The mock orange Philadelphus is often thought of as a medium to large shrub but Philadelphus ‘Manteau d’ Hermine’ is a delightful compact shrub that has all the qualities associated with Philadelphus, long flowering, fragrant white flowers, but has a well behaved, compact habit.
16
Maintenance regime can also dictate the plant selection process. I am very fond of using Cornus alba ‘Elegantissima’ in my mixed borders because I know that to get good colour from the stems it needs to be coppiced every other year thus controlling its size in the border. So in my thought process not only is it manageable, pretty in the winter with the coloured stems but the cream variegation in the leaf looks great in the summer too! Plant association in many ways is the skill of placing plants together to form aesthetically pleasing combinations. This is a constant learning process aswell as an obsession for those of us with the gardening bug. This is where the skill of contrasting plant form and textures comes into its own. I may sometimes sound scathing toward colour but it is in the fine tuning of the selection that colours come to the fore for me. Having said that, it is important when establishing a brief for a garden design that clients provide colour preferences if they have them. Recently I have enjoyed including Rosa ‘Gertrude Jekyll’ with Geranium ‘Brookside’ as an under planting. The Geranium acts as a filler at the feet of the rose and helps contrast horizontal and vertical growth habit and pinks and purple.

This month’s cover images were photographed by Martin Johnson and feature wildlife that can be seen in the Royston area.
Martin was born and brought up in Yorkshire, but he has lived in Royston for over 30 years. He has always been a keen naturalist and over the years has developed a particular interest in bird watching and wildlife photography, with the 27 species of butterfly that may be found on Therfield Heath being the subjects of many photographic expeditions in the spring and summer. Many rare birds, including dotterel, longeared owl and rough-legged buzzard, have been found on walks round his ‘local patch’, which incorporates the land between Royston, Therfield Heath and the villages of Therfield and Reed. Martin is a member of Royston Photographic Society and is also chairman of the RSPB Hitchin and Letchworth Local Group, which covers most of North Hertfordshire (including Royston) and parts of South Bedfordshire. Local business owner Sally Marchant has reviewed Lily Clark’s new book ‘Here to Stay”. Lily lives in Royston and owns her own dog training company: Suppawt. She primarily work with rescue dogs so released this book to help as many rescue dog owners as possible. Sally says “Here to stay” is an amazing little book, packed full of important advice, with lovely illustrations to demonstrate the techniques explained. It covers the essentials that people need to know when they bring home their rescue dog (or in fact, any dog) and it focuses on the most important things first, so it’s great for reading as you go along your journey with your new dog.
Lily Clark not only explains the techniques, but gives very clear step-by-step instructions which break down the training into easy to follow sections. The ‘top tips’ throughout the book help to highlight and reinforce the most important points. Whether you are about to get your very first dog, or are an experienced dog owner who has found space in your life to give a rescue dog a second chance, this book is definitely one to read cover to cover.” Sally Marchant, www.naturallyhappydogs.com and www.dog-and-bone.co.uk

Home-Start Matters
Home-Start Royston & South Cambridgeshire (HSRSC) is a local charity which quietly, and in confidence, helps families with young children and in personal crisis ‘get back on track’.
In so doing, we pro-actively prevent many problems from escalating to major burdens for them and for our community. This early intervention can reduce immediate and future public costs to social services, the health service and, in some cases, educational services. We are proud 30
to have raised almost £90,000 in the last financial year and, recognising that there is no reduction in need, we have raised the target to £140,000 to enable us to extend our service to families in the Buntingford area. Home Start are hosting a Ceilidh evening with live entertainment from the Cyriacs. Tickets cost £15 including a supper of burger or sausage with a vegetarian option available. Royston & South Cambridgeshire Ceilidh Evening Melbourn Village College, Saturday 17th March, 7.15pm for 7.30pm start. From Tallulah’s Kitchen
Green Eggs and ham Hello my fellow foodies... This month I would like to share a recipe that is a little different from my usual offering to you, but it is something that has proved a new breakfast favourite in the Le Fey house! It is a very tasty and healthy start to the day, which given that the rest of Easter Sunday is usually spent devouring chocolate eggs, can only be a good thing! The hardest part of this recipe is sourcing avocado at the correct stage of ripeness. I highly recommend going to see Daniel on the fruit and veg stall on Royston market, he gives excellent advice and the avocado are second to none. Per person you will need: 1 egg from a health and happy free range hens. 1 avocado, just ripe. 3 to 4 slices of streaky bacon, the thinner the slice the easier the “ construction” will be. Let’s begin by popping the room temperature eggs into a pan of simmering water and cooking them at this temperature for five and a half minutes. Try to avoid a rapid boil. Immediately, and carefully, lift out the eggs and pop into a bowl of iced water to cool as rapidly as possible. This will also prevent the eggs from continuing to cook and should help you achieve a soft runny yolk. Remove the shell and keep the eggs to one side. Now let’s prepare the avocado. Cut in half and remove the stone- my preference is to cup the half containing the stone in my hand and with a single motion catch the stone broadside with one of my larger chopping blades. However, find a method that works for
Leisure
you but please take great care not to cut yourself when dealing with these slippery beasties - the A&E department is not the destination of choice for an Easter break! Now peel the avocado. Having removed the stone you may need to scoop away a little of the avocado flesh to fit the egg snugly into the hole left from the stone, put the two halves together, more scooping may be required to accommodate the egg snugly until you can close the two halves onto each other without a gap around the middle. Now, wrap the slices of bacon around the avocado, I had two slices going around the width , and two slices going up and down the length. I also stretched each slice by running the back of a knife along each slice individually, I believe this also helps reduced shrinkage whilst cooking. Heat up a non stick frying pan and place the avocado, loose end side facing down (this fixes the bacon in place and helps hold everything together,) and cook for approximately 10 minutes, turning all the time until the bacon is golden brown all over and beginning to crisp up. Serve and enjoy with pots of steaming tea and good company. One last suggestion for those brave souls amongst you and who can take a bit of spice...Monsieur Le Fey likes a goodly dollop of chilli sauce smothered between the avocado and the egg as it is assembled, but as I said this may not be how everyone chooses to start their day! Anyway, until next time my fellow foodies...

Welwyn Roman Baths Tunnel through time to the world of the Romans - with a visit to Welwyn Roman Baths. You can’t take a hot bath any more - the boiler went out about 1,800 years ago when the Romans left! But you can see some fascinating remains which have survived from their time. The Welwyn Roman Baths are a Roman ruin preserved under the A1(M) just north of modern-day Welwyn Garden City. The baths were a small part of the Dicket Mead villa, which was originally built in the 3rd century AD. Learn about how the Romans liked to relax with an elegant culture of bathing, and admire their creativity and style. The bath house remains are a scheduled ancient monument and were once part of the fine villa. The layout of the cold, warm and hot rooms and the heating system are remarkably well preserved. The baths are ingeniously protected in a steel vault under the A1(M) motorway. You can find out how this vault was built during your visit. Once the vault was completed the motorway was built over the top of it, and the remains of the baths sit 9 metres below junction 6. Only about half of the original extent of the baths is now on display. Visible parts remaining include the hypocaust, the tepidarium (warm room), caldarium (hot room) and the frigidarium (cold room) floor and cold

Also on display are archaeological finds from the Welwyn area and an exhibition devoted to the history of the site, which was uncovered during the 1960s and 70s by the Welwyn Archaeological Society. The full extent of the Dicket Mead villa was never fully excavated prior to the construction of the motorway, and the baths were only one of at least four buildings in total. The complex was probably part of a farm. It has been speculated that it might have been at least in part the equivalent of a hotel, lying as it does near Roman roads. www.welhat.gov.uk/romanbaths Welwyn Roman Baths are open Saturday, Sunday and Bank Holidays and seven days a week during Hertfordshire School Holidays from 2-5pm

Easter at Church
This lovely article was submitted by Royston Parish Church. Your Parish Magazines or websites will have details of the Easter Services in your village. What happened to Jesus? Jesus was a
prophet and a healer, and yet, in a matter of days he went from being loved by the crowds to being murdered on a cross. It looked like he was defeated, but he wasn’t - come and join us as we follow his journey!
Palm Sunday – 5th March, 8am, 10am and 5.30pm On Palm Sunday we re-enact the day Jesus rode triumphantly into Jerusalem on the back of a donkey. We call this day Palm Sunday because people lined his route waving palms and singing ‘Hosanna to the king’.
We will celebrate this day, firstly, with a said Eucharist at 8am. This will be followed by a Parish Eucharist with a procession of palms in church at 10am. Finally, at 6.30pm we will meet for Choral Evensong; the excitement of Palm Sunday morning has passed, and this evening service directs us to look forward and prepare ourselves for the dark events of the week ahead.
Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday of Holy Week – 6th, 7th, 8th March, 8pm
During the last week of Jesus’ life he spent time quietly with his friends Martha, Mary and Lazarus. We will remember that time with three services all at 8pm: Monday’s service will be a said Eucharist. Tuesday’s service will be led by members of our House Groups. Wednesday’s service takes the form of a Taizé service.
Maundy Thursday – 9th March, 8pm
On the Thursday before Jesus died, he celebrated the Jewish festival of the Passover with his twelve disciples. As they shared bread and wine, Jesus gave them a command to break bread and drink wine together in his memory. He also shocked his disciples by washing their feet, an act usually done by a slave; by doing this Jesus demonstrated that we must serve one another. The term ‘Maundy’ comes from the Latin, “mandatum”, meaning command; and on
34
that special evening we will follow Jesus’ command by re-enacting the Last Supper with a sung Eucharist and the symbolic act of washing six volunteers’ feet. The service will begin at 8pm and will be followed by a silent vigil in the Lady Chapel until midnight as we remember Jesus when he prayed in the Garden of Gethsemane. You are most welcome to join us for a part or all of the vigil.
Good Friday – 30th March, 11am and 1 noon After a dubious trial Jesus was
sentenced to death by crucifixion. He was tortured and forced to carry the horizontal piece of timber, which formed part of the cross, to a nearby hill in Jerusalem, called Calvary. He was nailed to the cross, where he hung for three hours before he died, after which time he was taken down from the cross and laid in a tomb. We remember this solemn day with two services; firstly, at 11am we will join with members of the other churches in Royston for a Walk of Witness. From the Bandstand in The Priory Memorial Gardens, we will re-enact Jesus’ steps to Calvary by walking around the town centre, and finally stopping at The Roysia Stone for a short open-air service. Secondly, at 12 noon, we will hold a service in the Parish Church; this will take the form of a simple sung Holy Communion service, using the bread and wine from the Maundy Thursday Eucharist. We will also have an opportunity to pay our respects to Jesus in an act called the Veneration of the Cross; a large crucifix (a cross with an image of Jesus on it) is held whilst people may come forward to kiss the cross, bow before it, genuflect (kneel down on one knee), stand in silence and look upon Jesus, or to simply stay in their pew and think of Jesus there. There is no obligation to come forward to venerate the cross and please do not let that act deter you from attending the whole service.
Easter Eve – Saturday 31st March
Jesus lay in his tomb, his disciples had scattered, terrified the same fate would come to them. The man they thought would be their Messiah was lying dead and all seemed lost. Unlike the disciples, we have the luxury of knowing that the joy of Easter Day is just a few hours away; we spend this day quietly preparing ourselves and the church for Easter Day, continuing to thank God for the sacrifice

Leisure Jesus made on the cross. There are no church services on Easter Eve to reflect the time when Jesus lay dead in the tomb.
Easter Day – 1st April, 6.30am, 8am and 10am In the darkness of the Sunday morning, Mary Magdalene went to Jesus’ tomb to pay her respects. To her surprise she found that the tomb was empty. She ran to find two other disciples who witnessed what she had described. They ran away and Mary saw two angels where Jesus had been laid. She then saw a man who she thought was a gardener, but when he spoke her name she recognised him to be Jesus – he was alive! She ran back to the disciples to tell them the Good News. Through God’s boundless love for humankind, death was overcome and Jesus was raised to new life.
Buns in the Parish Church. Secondly, we will have a said Eucharist in church at 8am, and finally, we will join together for a Parish Eucharist at 10am where the Easter Garden will be blessed and Easter eggs will be distributed to the children after the service to remind them of the new life of the Resurrected Jesus, the new life he gives to all of us too. Reed Cricket club: digging for victory Until the mid-1950s, Reed Village Green was still being used to grow potatoes and had been since the wartime “Digging for Victory” campaign. Then, once budding cricketers decided to form a team, the Green was levelled, equipment acquired, fixtures arranged and, from then on, the Club has grown from strength-to-strength. Initially playing “friendlies” against clubs from the surrounding area, Reed now has three senior teams playing on Saturdays in the Saracens Hertfordshire Premier Cricket League with its First team at Championship level. A Saturday fourth team plays friendlies as does a Sunday recreational team and this is often when players from the Colts’ section get their first experiences of Open-Age matches and the longer version of the game.
Also, on Sundays the 1st XI compete in the National Village Cup (NVC) and County tournaments. Reed’s members and supporters have been pleased and proud of the fact that this team has succeeded in reaching and winning the final of the prestigious NVC at Lord’s in 2012 & 2017! On both occasions this team composed predominantly of players who had come through the Colts. Club Captain, Tom Greaves, himself a former Colt, said of Reed’s latest victory “Hundreds of thousands of people dream of doing this. If you are an amateur footballer you don’t get to play at Wembley, but if you are an amateur cricketer you get a chance to play at Lord’s, the Home of Cricket. You enter the competition and you’ve got a chance. It’s the best competition in the world!” Training for Colts, (boys and girls from seven to 15 years) takes place on Sunday mornings from 22nd April to 22nd July under the guidance of fully qualified ECB registered coaches. Teams in the various age groups play League games in both Hertfordshire & Cambridgeshire. There is also a pathway into the Herts & Cambs Area & County set-ups. Reed C.C. is also part of the ECB initiative ‘All Stars’ aimed at five to eight year olds. This 10-week project takes place on Sunday mornings from 13th May. Registration for this is via the ECB All Stars website at www.ecb.co.uk Reed Cricket Club welcomes non-players and players of all ages and ability. Even in 2018, Reed C.C. is still “Digging for Victory”!

Don’t Let Business Structure Slide I read recently that, ‘if structure is the skeleton of the organisation, people are the blood and guts.’ Which makes an important point that you have to have good structure as well as good people, to have a competitive business.
Does it matter which comes first, the structure or the people? As a business start-up, you can survive without any real structure if you have the right people. But once the business reaches a certain size, you do need to start thinking structurally. In his book ’The E-Myth Revisited’, Michael Gerber recommends that small businesses should look at structure early. He suggests you should look at where you want the business to be in, say, 5 years and decide what structure that successful business will need. Now, in the early days, it may be that all the job roles your five-year-old business needs are actually carried out by just one or two people:

“I need an accountant who examines all the opportunities to save me tax”
you, mostly! But as your business grows, you can concentrate on employing the right people (some of whom will have more than one ‘role’ in the business), knowing all the important business areas are covered. Watching this year’s Winter Olympics, it showed that yes, you need a good skeleton (although some of the competitors seemed to treat theirs with contempt), you also needed strong, appropriate soft tissue – but it was the spirit that really made the difference. Watching the battered slopestyle athletes pick themselves up for another run after being dashed to the ground by vicious cross-winds, I couldn’t help but admire their never-say-die attitude! I guess that translates to the values and mission of your business – the unshakable desire to win, and to keep going in the face of adversity – that gives a real competitive edge. The Winter Olympics – the only place where sliding down a slippery slope is key to business success! julian@julianberry.co.uk
