What do you think of this month’s striking cover image? This beautiful photograph was taken by Stephen DeHavilland. Stephen specialises Friday 13th in evocative images of horses. April He says “my inspiration comes from the Gentleness, Grace, Power and Majesty of the horse.“ Visit his website to see more of his images www. stephendehavilland.com. Many of you have been asking about last month’s cover image by Martin Johnson apologies for not mentioning it anywhere in the magazine - the bird featured on the SG8 Villages edition of the magazine was a Stonechat and in Royston we had a majestic Red Kite.
Spring is now finally here evidenced in part by the peak of the lambing season at Wimpole Hall - why not visit and see if you are lucky enough to witness a lamb being born? Wishing you a great month and a happy St George’s Day on the 23rd!

Out & About Cracked Voices
Meridian’s Year 10 students find their voice. An inspirational one-off concert comes to Royston this month as the culmination of the Cracked Voices project. On 28th April, a series of classical songs written by Meridian School’s Year 10 students will be performed for the first time by professional singers Donna Lennard and Miles Horner. The students were challenged by the Cracked Voices team last October to find objects in Royston Museum that spoke to them. Objects that needed their stories told. The museum even opened up its storeroom to the Year 10s who finally plumped for an old silver saxophone, a set of medicine bottles, medals and a typewriter. The students then explored their ideas in a series of workshops led by writer Graham Palmer and composer Jenni Pinnock (herself an ex-Meridian
student who has gone on to have her work performed on BBC Radio 3 and mentor up-and-coming composers). In March, Donna and Miles also spent a morning at the school trailing the songs and helping with ideas on how students might develop them. Jenny Warburton, Head of Performing Arts at the school, commented, “The project has been a breath of fresh air, bringing new insight, new stimuli and new approaches. “The young writers and composers have thrived and matured through insights from Graham and Jenni - looking at the way they approach storytelling, history, narratives and word-painting.” The students’ songs will headline the concert on 28th April when Donna and Miles will be accompanied by professional musicians Sue Pettitt on clarinet and Ralph Woodward on piano. The event is hosted by Royston Methodist Church and all ticket money will be donated to the MindED Trust, a mental health charity set up in memory of local teenager Edward Mallen. The first half will also provide a chance to hear Cracked Voices, which premiered
at Anglia Ruskin University in Cambridge last month. Commissioned by Arts Council England and the PRS Foundation, Cracked Voices tells the stories of eleven ordinary locals from in and around Royston, from PoW Klaus Kellner celebrating Hitler’s birthday on Royston Heath to James Lucas, the man Charles Dickens loved to hate. From a migrant giving birth on the roadside to the town’s musical fraudster, finally caught out by iTunes. Throughout the performance there will be a slideshow running, illustrating the stories behind the songs. Graham Palmer said, “It’s been a joy to work with the students, we’re really looking forward to hearing the finished songs and we’re thrilled that the church is donating the takings to the MindEd Trust. Teenage mental health is such an important issue.” Royston Methodist Church, Queens Road Saturday 28th April, 7.30pm £8/£5 concessions Tickets from www.cracked-voices.co.uk or phone 01763 243815

Wildlife bcn bluebells There’s a shimmer of blue beckoning on the horizon, a dusky, delicate hue that in a couple of weeks’ time will be luring people into woods across the country. Each spring as the soil warms up and trees come into leaf a magical wildflower spectacle unfurls below. A silent walk into cool shady woods is one of the deep joys of spring, sunlight sifting through the leaves highlighting swathes of violetblue bluebells.
This area is home to some of the best ancient bluebell woods in the UK. The Wildlife Trust’s Brampton Wood is 900 years old, with 326 acres to explore.
With a wealth of experience gained in Cornwall by the sea and at Hotel du Vin in Cambridge, Head Chef James Day is bringing his passion for food to Bassingbourn’s award-winning pub. The Belle Freehouse opened its doors in 2013 and prides itself on being a village pub with a contemporary dining room offering pub classics and fine restaurant food. James joined the kitchen in January of this year, and along with sous-chef George Spence, is offering a menu of pub classics and fine restaurant food, with two mouth-watering specials added each week. All the dishes are freshly prepared from scratch with an honest simplicity that comes from a strong understanding of food. Pub classics such as Confit of Pork Belly with a Black Pudding Mash, Pan Roasted

The bluebell is a member of the lily family and has a clever way of surviving under the dense shade of woodland. The green

leaves start to emerge early in the year, before the leaves of the trees open so the bluebell does most of its growing with plenty of light replenishing nutrients in its bulb. The flowering part is the end of the cycle. Other spring flowering includes wood violet, primrose, honeysuckle and wood sorrel. Fabulous bluebell facts! • Nearly 50% of the world’s bluebells are found in the UK
Cod Loin with a Fresh Herb Crust, and Fish and Chips served with Homemade Tartar Sauce are offered alongside a separate bar menu which includes favourites such as the Belle Burger and Crispy Whitebait. Recent specials include Seafood Chowder, Chicken and Chorizo Risotto and Coconut Fish Curry. James’ love for food was passed on to him from his Grandad, a man who’d spend hours lovingly preparing soups and stews in the kitchen before enjoying every last piece of food on his plate. His influence is clear to see in James’ own devotion in the kitchen and the attention to detail in the final dish; when we visited on the Wednesday the jus for Sunday’s gravy was simmering away on the stove. (Booking is advised for The Belle’s popular Sunday roasts.) Look out too for The Belle’s own homemade Piccadilly Piccalilli and freshly baked bread from the Belle Bakery. Bar open daily. Kitchen open 6-9pm on Tuesdays, Wednesdays & Thursdays,12noon-9pm on Fridays & Saturdays, and 12noon-4pm for roasts on Sundays. registered out of school childcare for four to eleven year olds
School had a brilliant week using a variety of art forms to explore what makes us feel good during Healthy Young Minds in Herts ‘Feeling Good Week 2018’.
All children from nursery to year four took place in drumming workshops, using African drums to make music and rhythms. The children told traditional African stories such as the story of Anansi, and played rhythms for different parts of the story. They have also been cooking and learning how healthy eating can help them to feel good. We have also practised mindfulness. The children all created a piece of artwork based around where they feel safe. They have talked about how to help others feel good too. One way the children hope to succeed in their mission of helping others feel good is by displaying some of their artwork for the community to see on a notice board in the Library. This display will be up until the end of the Easter holidays – why not pop in and be inspired to try out your own ‘feeling good’ art project?

Children in years two, three and four took part in a ‘pots of perspective’ clay workshop funded by a grant from Healthy Young Minds in Herts. The children were encouraged to explore factors that affect our perspective and how we can use this to change or understanding ways of thinking. The pots have been fired and will be glazed and displayed in the windows of Glazed Creations. Pop into the studio to pick up a speech bubble and write down how the pots make you feel or how they might make you consider your perspective on situations throughout the rest of the day to add to the window display. This is an opportunity to show our children how they have managed to make you ‘feel good’ or change your mindset. We hope that the two displays that will be in the town throughout April will bring a little of our ‘feeling good’ to the wider community in the town.

Spotlight On... Luna animal rescue Luna Animal Rescue (LAR) started in October 2013 and has grown considerably over the last five years. We have successfully re homed some 20 Dogs, 175 Cats and a further 50 small animals, birds and reptiles. We continue to use foster homes and everyone works on a purely voluntary basis with absolutely no paid staff. We rely heavily on our foster homes to provide love, care and where appropriate, training for our animals, and are one big, very positive animal loving family. We have established some excellent links with local vets and businesses to help us get to where we have so far, however, we are always looking out for opportunities to forge links with companies who may like to support a small, totally voluntary, local charity. We advertise our animals on our Facebook page, through our website (both of which are very popular) and in local publications. We often visit our linked store Pets at Home in Biggleswade, who help us with our fundraising throughout the year. Our main outgoings are vet bills which are often £4,000 a month! Constant and dedicated fundraising is needed to cover this effectively.
We collect donations of food, equipment and bedding in a variety of places (Morrison’s in Royston has a donation bin), and Pets Corner in Frog End are really great supporters of us too. We undertake lots of fundraising activities through the Summer months and are looking forward to celebrating the 10 year anniversary of Royston Veterinary Centre with them later in the year! If you think you may be able to help us in a fundraising capacity or as a foster home or even if you are looking for a new family member drop us an email.

We visited David at his surgery just as he was dealing with a cat which had been badly injured in a road traffic accident. The poor creature was left with a very badly broken left leg. Her femur was broken into five pieces and, as a result, her left leg appeared much shorter than her right.

trimmed to solid material and re-faced with new oak, the rear porch fully restored and the new weatherboarding fitted. During January 2018, our millwrights completed repairs to the roof and fitting an aluminium cover over the weatherboarding.
The year has been a momentous one for the Trust. We began on the lowest possible note with the death of founding member and Chairman, Jim Brearley. Jim had been a driving force for the establishment of the Trust and the early work of surveying for bats and seeking Listed Building Consent. Both were clear by the beginning of the year but sadly, Jim did not see the fruits of his endeavour.
intense practical work on the structure itself. The trestle was anchored with steel straps the day before Storm Doris shook us all and work began in earnest in June with the agreement to employ MillBill Millwrights. David Livingstone and Tony Andrews, new committee members, then repaired the trestle timbers and applied coats of paint. It will be finished with an aluminium protective cover early in 2018.
However, under the new Chair, Hazel Hayden, we have achieved funding that will allow the completion of structural work to make the mill safe and available for public access. Historic England (HE) provided major financial assistance with the aim of removing the building from the Heritage at Risk list. A significant sum was also donated by the Society for the Protection of Ancient Buildings (SPAB). South Cambs Community Chest provided funds for work on the trestle and the Parish Council has been generous in its support for our efforts.
Initial stripping of areas of weatherboarding www.greatchishillwindmill.com showed that a multitude of ills had been covered by the 1967 re-boarding. We simply could not nail on the new boards without addressing the rot on the corner posts and the rear porch area. The front, horizontal weather beam that takes the weight of the windshaft and sail assembly was hardly attached and was in danger of falling forwards which would see the sail assembly crash to the ground.
The most wonderful achievement, though, is through the generosity of the villagers and Friends of the Windmill. Our campaign to raise funds for the purchase of Western Cedar weatherboarding has produced over £16,000. This together with terrific contributions from sale of our recipe book, dance classes, music nights and craft fairs, helped us to convince HE that the community was serious about restoring our windmill, leading to their agreement to grant us £15,000. The second half of the year has been one of

We will remount the sails then address the condition of the tail assembly and the steps leading to the windmill door. Hopefully, we can bring the tail fan back into operation and get the mill to turn into wind automatically. That will be a sight not seen since the 1950s!
In effecting the repair to the weather beam, the sails were removed which allowed stripping of the old paint, repair of the woodwork and application of modern paint protection. Tony Andrews spent a huge amount of time of this job with able assistance from volunteers Chris Bates, Neil Heywood and Robin Dibblee. The millwright also found that the floor had slipped in one rear corner pulling the joints of the uprights away from their seating. The extent of this damage and the work required to rectify it led to HE increasing its grant to £79,000. The year concluded with all structural timbers

My Local Life David Whte
David is the Clinical Director of the Royston Veterinary Centre. He qualified from Cambridge Vet School and has worked in many aspects of veterinary medicine including Farm Animal practice, Academia, Goverment, Industry and locums in many small animal practices. He had a prize winning herd of Charolais cattle and a flock of sheep for 20 years before coming to Royston! Your business is ten years old this month – you must have some funny stories to tell… I took an emergency call one afternoon and a rather distraught lady said her cat had broken its back and asked if I would see it straight away. Of course, this was a true emergency and she brought it to the surgery in double quick time. She came in with Kitty in a cardboard box; I could hear the cat calling out. I opened the box and there was Kitty, a beautiful young tabby, watching me watching her. She was bright eyed and purring and didn’t look in distress. When I went to stoke Kitty she stood up. Very carefully I gently lifted her out of the box and as I stroked her some more she started crying out... I discreetly explained to this very prim and proper lady that Kitty didn’t have a broken back but that she was in season and she was calling for a mate. What was the last book you read? Would you recommend it? Reading for me is so often work related so reading to relax has to be something quite different. The Flat White Economy by Douglas McWilliams describes how economic
success, centred on East London, has swapped the City’s champagne and supercars lifestyle for bicycles and boho flats and has become the prototype for digital cities around the world including the rest of the UK. What’s your favourite place to eat locally? Eating out is a very social occasion for me and if there’s a gang of us the Rasa Sayang is ideal- good atmosphere and a varied menu suiting all tastes and budgets. When I want to impress my guest I take them to the Fox & Duck at Therfield – a traditional English pub in a traditional location. Ivan and his team are always welcoming and the food is always good – lunchtime or evening. What do you enjoy most about your work? I work within a successful team and seeing the team excel in their work and individuals excel in their careers makes me very proud. Also, meeting owners is a large part of my work and helping them do the very best for their animals is hugely satisfying. What are your plans for holiday this year? This year it’s our tenth year at Royston and organising the celebrations has meant that I’ve put holiday plans on hold. Also, Biscotti, my beloved Labrador, should be having a litter of puppies this summer and that will take a huge amount of time. I have had two very relaxing dog walking holidays in the Scilly Isles and would love go to back there. I have a painting of an Atlantic storm looking out over Shipman Head on Bryer – it is a wonderful spot of tranquillity. What is the best advice you have ever been given? “Do It Now” by my uncle when I was eight years old. It is still good advice today!
Tell us about your perfect Sunday… Rise with the birds, get out for an early morning dog walk before the crowds, home for an exotic breakfast, a day of creative cooking and an evening meal with friends. If you could have a chat with anyone, who would it be? I wonder at Nelson Mandela and all he achieved in the face of such adversity. Where did he find all that kindness and generosity of spirit yet remain resolute in his determination? What’s top on your bucket list? Scuba diving off The Great Barrier Reef. I’ve been diving in many places – all wonderful but never in the Pacific and I’ve heard so much about the GBR. What is your guilty pleasure? This was a tough choice. Is it chocolate (Cadburys Dairy Milk), or is it chocolate, (Terry’s Chocolate Orange) or is it chocolate (Green & Black’s Butterscotch) or failing those three teaspoons of Demerara sugar in my coffee. Think Garden, Think Richard Garden Focus... Medium shrub selection Melbourn garden designer, Richard Arnott This month I am looking at medium sized shrub selection. We often want plants in the garden that will fill a space quickly but it is important to think about the mature size that a shrub will reach before selecting it. Here’s some things to consider when making your selection. Mature size and function. I often choose plants for a purpose. This may be a climber, for an arch such as Rosa ‘Zepherine Drouhin’ as it is almost thornless, perfect for next to a path. It covers an arch well and is very pretty with a good scent. It is no good to select a Hebe if you want to screen the new oil tank. In this situation you could consider Osmanthus x burkwoodii a compact evergreen shrub with small white flowers. It has a strong growing habit with an mature height of three metres. Plant form and texture. If you are a regular reader you’ll know colour is not my main driver for selection. All shrubs have a particular habit of growth, leaf texture and shape. If you are looking for a striking leaf shape and a spreading growth habit then try the evergreen shrub Fatsia Japonica. It’s a little tropical in feel and with large, glossy leaves it stands out in the border. Irish yew Taxus baccata ‘Fastigiata’ has a
striking upright habit that can be used to create vertical interest along an avenue. However, bear in mind it will need training as its finished height can reach ten metres.
Syringa microphylla ‘Superba’ which has fragrant pink flowers from late spring to early autumn. Unlike the common Lilac this shrub is more delicate and definitely worth attention! For more in depth plant advice or garden design help please get in touch.
Maintenance regime. Often it is easy to forget maintenance when planning a new garden. I like to see definition between shrubs in the border otherwise plants blur into each other. It is worth mentioning that many hedging plants have big mature heights but with pruning and training this can be overcome. Forsythia and Buddleja flower on the new wood and should always be pruned after flowering. Evergreen or deciduous. I like to use a mixture of both shrubs in my mixed plant borders. Lavatera ‘Rosea’ is good value, pink, summer flowering shrub with a long flowering season. Hydrangeas are back in fashion! Why not try the pretty pink Hydrangea macrophylla ‘Lilacina’. For evergreens why not a Viburnum ‘Pragense’ for its narrow veined leaves and clusters of white spring flowers. Scent is an important driver too. Why not consider Philadelphus ‘Beauclerk’ this is the next size up from Philadelphus ‘Belle Etoile’ mentioned last month. Another under rated shrub is the small Lilac,

A Little Further Afield Broadway, letchworth Broadway Cinema & Theatre in Letchworth celebrates a year of change and success. In February 2017, following a major refurbishment project, Letchworth Garden City’s beloved Broadway Cinema re-opened as Broadway Cinema & Theatre, a new 2-in-1 arts venue for North Hertfordshire. In the months since, the professional stage has seen a huge range of acts, from national treasures like Gyles Brandreth, Ruby Wax and Dawn French to powerful and inspiring dramas, live music and charming family shows.
80 years of film
Broadway Cinema opened on 26th August 1936 to a packed screening of Follow the Fleet starring Ginger Rogers and Fred Astaire. The beautiful Art Deco building quickly became a popular venue for occasional rallies, speeches and live music from the likes of Acker Bilk and Marti Wilde.
More recently Broadway Cinema featured on the big screen itself! Director Edgar Wright chose Letchworth for the filming location for The World’s End (starring Simon Pegg) and the Cinema featured as one of the pubs on an ill-fated pub crawl, along with several other town centre locations.
Bringing top quality theatre to the region
Broadway is run and funded by the Letchworth Garden City Heritage Foundation, the custodian of the world’s first Garden City. In 2016, the Foundation decided to invest in the town’s cultural offer, developing Broadway into a 2-in-1 Cinema & Theatre and also converting the Letchworth Arts Centre into Broadway Gallery. Major refurbishment works in 2016 saw the installation of a stage, backstage rooms and lighting rig, as well as sound proofing panels, air conditioning and other logistical capabilities. A new cinema screen was installed that can be raised in just five minutes to reveal the stage behind. Alongside its film repertoire, the venue has now welcomed 60 professional theatre companies since opening, performing a diverse range of genres, for a diverse range of audiences!
Coming up soon
The Theatre’s first birthday season has been a great success, with most shows selling out and audiences coming from all over Hertfordshire. In the next few weeks the legendary Pam Ayres and Rich Hall will be coming to Broadway, as well as the Candoco Dance Company, the company of disabled and non-disabled performers who challenge notions of art and ability, and local celebrity James Mayhew.
Si Cranstoun Letchworth is also looking forward to a dynamic show “Twisting the Night Away” with Si Cranstoun and his band. Presented by Melbourn-based music promoter Terry Dash Music, the evening promises to take the theatre back to the days of Doo Wop, Rock’n’Roll and the early sounds of Soul!
Just 20 minutes from Royston by road and around the same by train, Broadway Cinema & Theatreis well worth a visit! Twisting the Night Away with Si Cranstoun and his Band, Broadway Cinema & Theatre, Letchworth, Sunday 29th April, 7pm www.terrydash.co.uk For full details of shows and films visit: www.broadway-letchworth.com BOX OFFICE 01 62 681088

From Tallulah’s Kitchen Lemon and Orange chiffon cake Hello my fellow foodies...
This month I would like to share with you a citrus cake with a feather light sponge and fabulously zingy icing! The perfect antidote to this grey weather we have been having. For the cake you will need: 360g self raising flour 280g caster sugar 1 tbsp baking powder 150ml of vegetable oil 5 eggs, from happy free running hens, carefully separated into yolks and whites 150ml orange juice 3 tbsp finely grated lemon & orange zest 1/2 tsp cream of tartar For the icing you will need 250g butter at room temperature 4 tbsp of finely grated lemon & orange zest 3 tbsp lemon juice 4 tbsp orange juice 500g icing sugar Pre heat your oven to 180°C and grease and flour 2 x 9” non stick, loose bottomed cake tins.
pop the tins into the oven for 20 minutes until the cake is golden brown and fully risen. Starting with the sponge, into Some people like to test with your trusted mixer, pop your flour, caster sugar and baking a skewer, others prefer to gently touch for a springy powder. Make a well in the texture. Whichever method you centre and into this pour the choose, when you are happy vegetable oil, egg yolks, zest and the orange juice. Beat for the cake is cooked leave it to cool for 10 minutes in the tins a good 4-5 minutes to ensure before turning them out onto a lump free mixture. In a separate and clean bowl (any a cooling rack for a further 20 mins. While the sponges are trace of grease will make the next step impossible) whip up cooling let’s get on with the the egg whites, cream of tartar icing. and a pinch of caster sugar you have peaks that stand by Now, I must admit to being slightly horrified at the quantity themselves as you pull the of butter and sugar, but a 9” beaters from the bowl. cake is a big beastie and this Now, we are going to combine amount of icing is enough for the two mixtures. So, with soft topping, filling and the sides. Into your mixing bowl pop the and gentle thoughts in mind, butter and zest and give it a take a tablespoon of the egg good beating to soften the white mixture and delicately fold it into the cake batter, once butter and release the oils from the zest. Now add the icing this has been incorporated it will loosen the mixture to make sugar bit by bit and carefully combine the lemon and orange it easier to add the rest of the juice and gradually drip this egg whites. Do this in 2 or 3 into the mixer. Keep a close goes and keep to minimum eye on the consistency as stirring. Over stirring or being you add the juice the icing too rough will knock out the will loosen up but “over do” air. Equally divide the mixture the juice and you will have a between the cake tins and curdled icing. (If this happens
it may be rescued by adding more icing sugar but then you need to “tweak” the flavours too.) Once you have the icing as you like it, simply spread in the centre and all around the cake. You may need to allow the cake to cool to firm up again before serving. Now for a small confession...I had originally planned to decorate the finished cake with some spring flowers, however when I searched the garden the “Beast from the East” had chosen to thwart my plan by landing six inches of snow, making it Mission Impossible! Perhaps my mission will be more successful next time.. should I choose to accept it?! Until next time my fellow foodies....

With all this talk about running and marathons, my mind started to think about chocolate! When I was a kid, there was a bar called Marathon – which is now what we know as Snickers. Why it was renamed is a bit of a mystery – apart from the fact that its owners, Mars, wanted to bring the UK in line with the rest of the world – where it had been called Snickers since the 1930s! I had no idea it was that old, so I did a bit of research and found that Snickers is actually the bestselling chocolate bar of all time
with global sales of £1 billion a year! And I also found out that ‘Snickers’ was the name of the company owner’s favourite horse! If my memory serves me well, one of Marathon’s old slogans was, “Marathon keeps you going, going, going, with peanut power!” This made me wonder – just how far would the energy in a current Snickers bar last a runner? Not surprisingly, this depends on several factors, but the current wisdom suggests that it would fuel you for between two and three miles of running. Which means that, if my maths is right, you’d need 10 bars just to replace the energy used running a marathon – makes you realise just how hard our amazing fundraisers will be working as they pound the pavements. In my opinion, anyone who takes on the marathon has certainly ‘got some nuts’, as Snickers’ advertising so eloquently puts it! Good luck to all our local runners, you’re amazing. julian@julianberry.co.uk
Grant Funding for Businesses
Make a will and help transform patient care. Making or updating your will can seem like a big challenge. However, it can be a lot more affordable and straightforward than you may think.
The Walkers
I don’t mind a bit of running myself, but 26 miles is way too far for me. I can sweat my way round a 10k course in under an hour – but that’s only a quarter of a marathon! How people manage to do a full one, I’ll never know!
Small and medium businesses in the wider Royston area can access Grant Funding and Free Energy Efficiency reviews, thanks to ERDF funding. The BEE (Business Energy Efficiency) programme has a limited pot of money to give away to eligible businesses who are looking to make capital investments on energy efficient projects this year. Previous applicants have invested in new windows, heating systems and LED lighting, with up to £20,000 of their expenditure covered by the grant.
Funding is limited, so businesses are urged to register their interest now at www.beecp.org/sign-up Alternatively, call 01733 8825 9 or email info@beecp. co.uk.

Loving Local Living Index of Advertisers WI Am
Royston WI AM heard a very informative talk from David Wherrell entitled ‘Another Plebs Guide to Classical Music’. He told us how his interest began with the music his parents played. At the age of five he would play his parents records on the family radiogram. By five his parents gave David his own record player. We learnt about the music that was played from
his early school days through to when he was a family man. We listened to several extracts including Sibelius - Karelia Suite, Benjamin Britten: A Young Person’s Guide to the Orchestra, Glasgow Orpheus Choir: Psalm 23, Bach: Toccata and Fugue in D Minor and Victor Borge. WI AM meets on the 2nd Wednesday of the month at Market Hill Rooms, Royston. Pat Morritt 01763 661627
and famous passengers. Andrew Sankey entertained us with his ‘Six Favourite Gardens’ from Cornwall, Wales.
