This month will see Prince Harry marry Meghan Markle at St George’s Chapel in Windsor – let’s Monday hope for a beautiful Spring day for the couple and for all the parties and 14th May celebrations that will be held to mark the occasion. If you haven’t received your invitation don’t worry, there are plenty of events to enjoy this month. As usual, there is something for everyone with fairs, markets, exhibitions, talks and more.

On our to do list this month are a visit to Sandy to the The Lodge RSPB Nature Reserve and Gardens – read about it in our “A Little Further Afield” article - and to enter Royston in Blue. Out & About ASHWELL IN MAY Ashwell Music Festival

The 65th Ashwell Music Festival held at St. Mary’s Church in Ashwell promises to be as entertaining as ever, with a range of musical genres to suit all ages and tastes! The festival begins on Friday, 11th May with a FREE event suitable for children aged 3+. Widdershins Puppet Theatre will entertain us with ‘The Three Billy Goats Gruff & Other Furry Tails’ – a show packed with fun, laughter, some gorgeous puppets and a soundtrack that will stick in your head long after you have left St. Mary’s Church! On Saturday 12th May, by popular request, the tribute act is back. Mission Blue have established themselves as one of the UK’s top Motown tribute bands. A superb vocal group with stunning dance routines featuring classic soul songs of Motown, the 70s, 80s, 90s, through to the present day. This is a highly professional show guaranteed to have you dancing in the aisles. The Young Musicians’ Concert follows on Thursday 17th May, showcasing the talents of young people from Ashwell, Baldock and the surrounding area. Jazz followers will be flocking to see The Darius Brubeck Quartet on Friday 1 th May. Playing to sold-out houses at regional festivals and clubs, the quartet’s acoustic sound is melodic, spontaneous, rhythmic and engaging. Darius, whilst known for representing his famous father’s legacy, is an imaginative jazz composer and

Originally from Ashwell, Ben was the winner of the Brass Category Final of the 2016 BBC Young Musician Competition. As the only student of Radek Baborak at the BarenboimSaid Academy in Berlin, An Evening with Ben Goldscheider: Horn and Piano Recital, promises to be a truly entertaining evening.

Both events will be marked with a series of performances, events, activities and workshops during the day, many of them making particular reference to the part played by the people of Ashwell at the time.

RAS LAUNCH YOUNG ARTIST AWARDS Royston Arts Society is

encouraging young artistic talent in the local area with the launch of their Young Artist Awards in 2018. It’s a competition with a difference as all prizes are designed to develop the skills of aspiring young artists. Market Day at Barkway Spring is in the air – at last. And Barkway is getting ready for its big day – the annual Barkway Market.

The village expects to welcome up to 4000 visitors seeking bargains in the leafy grounds of the Manor Farm – one of Barkway’s lovely old houses. Featuring as many as 120 stalls and a craft tent, the Market attracts visitors from near and far. Royston Town Band will perform, and the miniature steam railway will offer rides. Food and drink will be

available, and this year for the first time the Raptor Foundation will be exhibiting, providing an opportunity to get up close and personal with spectacular birds of prey. It’s a wonderfully English day out. Barkway Market raises funds for numerous local good causes, including Barkway Village Hall, which organises the event. Parking is free, and admission is £3 (under 16s free).

NHDC is calling for applications from local charities, voluntary groups and not for profit organisations for a share of its almost ÂŁ90,000 grant funding pot in 201 /19. The Council provides grants to voluntary groups and not-forprofits through its five Area Committees. These can be used to launch a new project or advance an existing project to a new stage, as long as there is a positive benefit to the community. Each Committee, which meet four times a year in June, September, December and March, is allocated an amount of grant funding to give to appropriate projects, depending on the population they serve. To make an application: Make sure you apply well in advance of when you will need the funding as the process can take a few months, taking into account the Committee meeting schedule.

Complete an application form and submit it along with your groupâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s latest accounts and Constitution. You will then be invited to come along to a meeting to give a brief presentation to the Committee, following which the Councillors on the Committee take a vote then you will find out if your application has been successful. The next deadline to apply for funding is: 5pm on Friday 4th May. If you apply for this funding round and are successful, you would receive the funding around the end of June. A Little Further Afield News from RSPB The Lodge, Sandy The RSBP’s UK Headquarters is at The Lodge Nature Reserve and Gardens in Sandy. It is a very special place, offering an exceptionally rich combination of wildlife and heritage experiences. The woodland, heath and acid grassland cover an area of some 220 hectares, and now form the largest stretch of heathland in Bedfordshire. Heathland is a key habitat at The Lodge, home to breeding hobbies, ravens, common lizards, green tiger beetles and other invertebrates of bare, sandy soil. RSPB is restoring it for breeding nightjars and woodlarks and it is already one of the best inland sites for natterjack toads. The hilly, oak-dominated woodlands offer a rich natural experience to those exploring The Lodge’s network of winding trails, with sunny rides and glades where spotted flycatchers catch food for their broods, and a developing under-storey is alive with bird song and insect life. Standing and fallen deadwood is an important microhabitat, used by deadwood insects, occasionally the scarce lesser-spotted woodpeckers, and many of the 600 fungi species found on site. We asked Mark Brandon from The Lodge to tell us what we can expect from a visit this May... “After the unseasonably cold and wet start to the year, spring migration has started very slowly. The first blackcaps and chiffchaffs to arrive on the reserve weren’t seen until March 28th, almost two weeks later than they’d normally be here,

and as I write, there’s only been the occasional swallow over the reserve, and the sand martins and wheatears that we’d normally expect haven’t been reported here as yet. Weather systems with cold winds have been keeping the birds further south, and as I’ve recently returned from a birding trip in Morocco, I know that migration has also been slow through northern Africa, with no nightingales, golden orioles or any large movements of raptors seen by our birding group, and only a couple of cuckoos and turtle doves noted passing through. We should expect a big surge of spring migrants arriving on our shores when the winds change and the birds start to move northwards to return to their breeding grounds again this month. We have recently replaced all of the old way marker signs around the reserve trail network and have re-named our three main trails as woodpecker, buzzard and nuthatch, with respective colour coding for each trail, to make navigation easier and more fun. Come along and give them a try! Keep checking the skies for the swallows, martins and swifts flying overhead this month, as they feed up after their long journeys back from Africa and listen out for the first cuckoos!. Our April meeting welcomed Dr. Maureen James, an historian, who gave an interesting talk on The Clarksons of Wisbech and the Abolition of Slavery. Thomas Clarkson was born in 1760 in The Old Grammar School, Wisbech, where his father was headmaster. His lesser known brother John was born four years later. Thomas attended the grammar school until he was 12 years old and then went to St. Paul’s School in London. He was an able student and in 1779 went up to St. Johns

College, Cambridge with two scholarships. In 1785 Thomas, like many people in Britain, knew little about the horrors of slavery and the slave trade. For the next two months he read widely on the subject and rode down to London, still very agitated by his findings. On the old A10 at Wadesmill, he reigned in his horse and at that moment, he knew that he would dedicate his life to the Abolition of Slavery. Here, in 1879, on High Cross Hill, the Clarkson Monument was erected in his honour. Our next meeting is the last of the current season and incorporates the Annual General Meeting. It will be held in the Heritage Hall, Town Hall, Thursday May 10th 7.45pm after which Richard Till will give an illustrated lecture entitled, Who do you think you are? The evening concludes with light refreshments, a glass of wine or soft drink. Free to members and £2 for visitors. All are welcome.

Conservators of Therfield Heath & Greens The Conservators of Therfield Heath & Greens held their first ever public forum in April at Royston Town Hall, with over eighty people attending. The forum was to encourage interaction with the users of the Heath. “Friends of Therfield Heath” was proposed & well received. As were presentations from Grazing, Dog Poo Patrol, Archery, Golf, Cricket, Rugby, Heath Sports and the Police. John King, chairman of the Conservators, advised that with Royston expanding and the increased usage of the Heath, “Education” was top of the conservator’s agenda and work

had already started on improving the level of communication to the users of Therfield Heath with further public meetings planned. Dogs We are asking for dogs to be kept on leads in the Lankester Hill area while the ground-nesting birds attempt to breed (until the end of July). Breeding success is severely reduced by disturbance; the more they are scared off their nests, the lower their chance of success. We have populations of Skylarks and Meadow Pipits - the Skylark is on the UK red list (highest conservation priority), while the Meadow Pipit is on the amber list – so both need as much help as we can give them. Please do your bit to help by respecting signs requesting dogs to be on leads.

That April, on Hitler’s birthday, locals woke to find, fluttering from the camp’s water-tower, a fullsize German swastika. Needless to say, it was never reported.

Think Garden, Think Richard Garden Focus... Large shrub selection

bursting with scent from late May onwards. It too has an RHS award of garden merit.

Melbourn garden designer, Richard Arnott To continue my series of articles for 2018, designing with plants, this month I am going to look at large sized shrub selection. Here is what you should consider when selecting:

a laurel with flowers that last a long time. The bad reputation normally stems from neglecting to prune each year. They flower on the new wood so should be pruned in the dormant growing months. I like to use Buddleja davidii ‘Nanho Blue’ which is a little less vigorous with a bushy habit and pretty blue flowers from summer to autumn. Its common name is the butterfly bush so will help to attract peacocks, painted ladies and red admirals especially into the garden.

Mature size and function. So we have identified that we want a large shrub for a particular function. It is important to note that mature heights in books and online resources are a guide and through good pruning you can manage an otherwise enormous plant. In this example I would consider using an evergreen such as Cotoneaster lacteus which can reach 4metres, has summer white flowers and red berries for the birds in the autumn and winter. Equally good would be a laurel but here I would choose the Portuguese laurel Prunus lustitanica over the common laurel as I prefer the slender, pointed, darker leaves that grow on red stalks. It is very important to focus on the function of the plant

Scent. We are all tuned into roses as providers of scent in the garden but the quintessential summer scented shrub is the Mock Orange Philadelphus ‘Virginal’. It produces richly scented, white summer flowers. This plant has an RHS award of garden merit which is a good endorsement if ever you need one. I am also fond of Lilac that offers its show in late spring and early summer. Syringa ‘Mme Antoine Buchner’ has crowded heads of mauve flowers

Plant form and texture should always be considered after function. I touched on this above when debating the darker green, slender leaf on a red stem of Prunus lusitanica. The shrub has an altogether more subtle appearance that blends into its surroundings than its bolder, shiny, larger, more rounded leafed relation Prunus laurocerasus. For a more open plant form you could consider a deciduous shrub. Buddleja’s have gained a reputation for being thuggish in the garden but offer an arching, more open growing habit than

Evergreen or deciduous. When I design new shrub borders I like to have a balance of both shrubsI like to have two thirds deciduous to one third evergreen to embrace the changing seasonal element of our green spaces. It is also really important for wildlife to encourage diversity in the planting.Why not consider using native plants from the palette used for hedgerow planting in the countryside. The deciduous Guelder rose Viburnum opulus has pretty lacecap white flowers in summer and clusters of red berries for the birds in the autumn. It also benefits from good autumn colour. Or consider the deciduous Purple leaf Elder Sambucus nigra ‘Guincho Purple’ for a bit of moody, divided, purple leaves with pink budded flowers opening to white in the summer. Our native spindle Euonymus europaeus ‘Red Cascade’ has good autumn colour and curious red fruits with orange seeds. Many of the variegated hollies offer great evergreen interest and berries in the winter too if pollinated by a male holly. I especially like Ilex aquifolium ‘Argentea Marginata’ for its cream margined, prickly leaves. For more in depth plant advice or garden design help please get in touch.

MUSEUM MUSINGS: Horribly Healthy! We come across some weird and wonderful adverts in the newspapers we hold in the collection. Mike, one of our volunteers, has been taking a closer look and has created a new display that brings to light some of the ailments that were troubling people in the late 1800s. The Victorians are often thought of as a stuffy, prudish sort but seemingly the makers of medicines felt the need to go into quite some detail about how their potions and concoctions could help. If we go by the adverts, it seems stomach complaints were quite an issue for local people – there are remedies for wind, bloating, stomach cramps and diarrhoea!

Loving Local Living Index of Advertisers Curwens New Exhibition A new exhibition opens in Curwens Gallery on Wednesday 9th May with three local artists taking part. Chantal Lipscombe, Rhiannon Maslen and Rowland Penfold have combined to launch this latest exhibition. Chantal’s watercolour designs focus primarily on British wildlife. Using striking, loose strokes from a vibrant palette, she aims to depict the character of creatures that live near her cottage in the Hertfordshire countryside.

Rowland’s woodturning reflects his love of natural native timbers, often choosing pieces to work with that other woodturners might reject. This gives each piece a unique pattern and shape together with exploring the unexpected. His use of what can only be described as ‘botanical roadkill’ is a particular feature. Occasionally he will add other materials to his work and this exhibition features pieces which combine both turned wood and pewter.

Open during normal office hours Rhiannon is a photographer and a printmaker. She will be exhibiting a selection of her photographs of flowers, using some of her favourite photographic techniques to enhance their natural beauty. She will also be exhibiting some linoprints of people and animals.
