Ashwell at Home

In addition to the traditional programme with open gardens, musical performances, craft stalls and activities for children, this year Ashwell at Home will be commemorating the centenary of two highly significant moments. Women’s Suffrage finally became law in February 1918 and on 11th November in the same year came the Armistice which ended the fighting on the Western Front in the First World War.

The Young Musicians’ Concert follows on Thursday 17th May, showcasing the talents of young people from Ashwell, Baldock and the surrounding area. Jazz followers will be flocking to see The Darius Brubeck Quartet on Friday 18th May. Playing to sold-out houses at regional festivals and clubs, the quartet’s acoustic sound is melodic, spontaneous, rhythmic and engaging. Darius, whilst known for representing his famous father’s legacy, is an imaginative jazz composer and performing his compositions is an important reason for the group’s popularity.

Both events will be marked with a series of performances, events, activities and workshops during the day, many of them making particular reference to the part played by the people of Ashwell at the time.

Ashwell Music Festival are pleased to welcome Ben Goldscheider back to perform on Saturday 19th May. Originally from Ashwell, Ben was the winner of the Brass Category Final of the 2016 BBC Young Musician Competition. As the only

Baby Teething

Precious Metals Jewellery PrestigeWatches Diamonds & Gemstones

Most babies start teething at around six months old. If you are worried about any behaviour that is out of character for your baby then consult your GP. 1) Teething rings:- These give your baby something to safely chew on and these may provide a distraction. You can also try apple or carrot. 2) Teething Gels:- For babies over four months old sugar-free teething gel can provide relief. Make sure that the gel is designed for young children. 3) Cold Drinks:- Cold drinks will help sooth gums. Water is the best option but try to make sure drinks are sugar-free. 4) Wipe Up Dribble:- If your baby dribbles more than usual, wipe to stop the skin developing a rash. 5) Care For Baby Teeth:- As soon as teeth start to show, you can brush them. Use a baby tooth brush with a tiny blob of fluoride toothpaste.

Laura Morris, manager of Premier Travel in Royston, explains why Corsica is a top destination for everyone. Corsica is a breathtaking island which is guaranteed to reward all holidaymakers. Boasting picturesque sandy beaches and a rugged, mountainous interior, there’s something for everyone. Hopping on a flight from Stansted, you can fly direct to the beautiful town of Calvi. Located in the north-west of the island, Calvi is known for its stunning beaches, authentic hilltop villages and easy access to the rugged centre; it’s certainly a rewarding spot from which to enjoy a holiday. Calvi town is home to a glorious stretch of silver sand, which sweeps around the bay and towards the town’s impressive citadel. A perfect Mediterranean municipality, with cobbled streets, colourful buildings, harbour side cafés and its pine-fringed sandy bay, there’s enough to keep you occupied. The citadel and surrounding town offers a fantastic variety of shops, restaurants and bars. Not far from Calvi, you will discover lots of wonderful smaller towns and villages which are well worth

exploring, showcasing just how unknown Corsica still is from the mass tourism market. L’Ile Rousse, slightly north along the coast, is a laid-back seaside town at the foot of the Balagne hills. It has beaches and a bustling marketplace with cafés huddled beneath the plane trees in the village square. With a slower pace of life, it’s ideal for anyone looking to experience a traditional way of life. Heading a little inland from the glittering coast, there are plenty of authentic villages to wander around. Lumio is a good place to start, mostly for its superb views over the bay towards Calvi, but also for its Wednesday morning market and numerous unspoilt beaches. There’s endless exploring to be done around la Balagne, and driving through the hills will bring you to many other picturesque and authentic villages, such as Calenzana, Monticello, Feliceto and Montegrosso. One of Corsica’s most alluring characteristics is that there’s plenty to explore by road, rail, boat or foot, and there’s some great expeditions for families. Corsica’s many sandy beaches and clear waters are perfect for young families and older children, and activities such as canyoning, rock climbing, hiking, mountain biking, horse riding and water sports are popular. So why not make this the year you head to Corsica to experience its charm for yourself?

Premier Travel can offer seven nights B&B in Corsica staying at Hotel le Splendid from £659pp, based on two people sharing. It is valid for travel on June 17th, 2018, from Stansted and includes transfers. Other Corsica offers are also available.

Rare or Well Done? It’s all about personal preference, but here’s James’ top tip to try. Pinch the index finger and thumb of your left hand together lightly. Then, using your thumb and index finger on your right hand, feel your palm midway between your thumb joint and wrist. This level of resistance should feel pretty close to a rare steak. Move through your fingers one by one all the way though to your little finger and you should be able to feel the differences, each finger corresponding to a different cooking temperature (Cuisson): medium-rare, medium and well done!

Nick Grundy

What is your favourite book? ‘A long walk to freedom’ by Nelson Mandela is a really good read.

Nick has 15 years experience in the housing industry and is proud to be the Managing Partner at Abode Town & Country in Royston. Along with his team, he aims to to provide an old fashioned polite service his customers will be pleased to recommend.

What do you have for your lunch today? I had a Royston special with turkey in a roll from Days, if you haven’t tried it then you are missing out!

Where do you live? The Twigdens, Royston. What’s your favourite local place to eat and drink? I like the Banyers personally, we normally go straight after I finish work. We take Freddie with us as they are child friendly and I like the atmosphere. Freddie is a fan of their fish fingers for tea and I like their beers. Your favourite Local Shop? ‘La Bella Vita’ for gifts for Mrs Grundy, they sell the best range of ‘Emily Jaynes’ candles which always go down a treat! What is your guilty pleasure? Its definitely a few beers in the week when I’m watching The Royston Crows. What was the last film you watched? I watched ‘Hangover 3’ on Sky at the weekend. How do you celebrate? I like to celebrate with a nice bottle of wine from Cambridge Wine and a hearty home cooked meal or I’ll go out for dinner with my family to a nice local pub like The Chequers in Wrestlingworth or The Wood Grill at The Queen Adelaide in Croydon. How do you like to spend your days off work? You’ll normally see me over the Heath having family walks on my day off.

1

What is the best thing about your work? With work, it’s always the people and families I meet and being able to watch people move into their dream homes that makes my job fulfilling... and Jade, she makes the best brews! What is your greatest fear? Being in a room with pigeons…and Sunderland winning the Premier League. What are you most looking forward to this May? My wife Jen and I are expecting our second bundle of joy on 9th May! Abode Town & Country 10 Church Lane‚ Royston SG8 9LG 01763 259888 info@abodetc.co.uk www.abodetc.co.uk

Curwens New Exhibition A new exhibition opens in Curwens Gallery on Wednesday 9th May with three local artists taking part. Chantal Lipscombe, Rhiannon Maslen and Rowland Penfold have combined to launch this latest exhibition. Chantal’s watercolour designs focus primarily on British wildlife. Using striking, loose strokes from a vibrant palette, she aims to depict the character of creatures that live near her cottage in the Hertfordshire countryside. Rhiannon is a photographer and a printmaker. She will be exhibiting a selection of her photographs of flowers, using some of her favourite photographic techniques to enhance their natural beauty. She will also be exhibiting some linoprints of people and animals.

Open during normal office hours. Preview Evening, Wednesday, 9th May, to 8pm Curwens Art Gallery

Rowland’s woodturning reflects his love of natural 17 High St, Royston SG8 9AA native timbers, often choosing pieces to work with that other woodturners might reject. This gives each piece a unique pattern and shape Save the date together with exploring the unexpected. His use of what can only be described as ‘botanical Join David and the Royston Veterinary roadkill’ is a particular feature. A Little Further Afield

News from RSPB The Lodge, Sandy The RSBP’s UK Headquarters is at The Lodge Nature Reserve and Gardens in Sandy. It is a very special place, offering an exceptionally rich combination of wildlife and heritage experiences. The woodland, heath and acid grassland cover an area of some 220 hectares, and now form the largest stretch of heathland in Bedfordshire. Heathland is a key habitat at The Lodge, home to breeding hobbies, ravens, common lizards, green tiger beetles and other invertebrates of bare, sandy soil. RSPB is restoring it for breeding nightjars and woodlarks and it is already one of the best inland sites for natterjack toads. The hilly, oak-dominated woodlands offer a rich natural experience to those exploring The Lodge’s network of winding trails, with sunny rides and glades where spotted flycatchers catch food for their broods, and a developing under-storey is alive with bird song and insect life. Standing and fallen deadwood is an important microhabitat, used by deadwood insects, occasionally the scarce lesser-spotted woodpeckers, and many of the 600 fungi species found on site. We asked Mark Brandon from The Lodge to tell us what we can expect from a visit this May... “After the unseasonably cold and wet start to the year, spring migration has started very slowly. The first blackcaps and chiffchaffs to arrive on the reserve weren’t seen until March 28th, almost two weeks later than they’d normally be here, and as I write, there’s only been the occasional swallow over the reserve, and the sand martins and wheatears that we’d normally expect haven’t been reported here as yet. Weather systems with cold winds have been keeping the birds further south, and as I’ve recently returned from a birding trip in Morocco, I know that migration has also been slow through northern Africa, with no nightingales, golden orioles or any large movements of raptors seen by our birding group, and only a couple of cuckoos and turtle doves noted passing through. We should expect a big surge of spring migrants arriving on our shores when the winds change and the birds start to move northwards to return to their breeding grounds again this month.

20

Chiffchaff John Bridges (rspb-images.com) We have recently replaced all of the old way marker signs around the reserve trail network and have re-named our three main trails as woodpecker, buzzard and nuthatch, with respective colour coding for each trail, to make navigation easier and more fun. Come along and give them a try! Keep checking the skies for the swallows, martins and swifts flying overhead this month, as they feed up after their long journeys back from Africa and listen out for the first cuckoos!. RSPB The Lodge reserve is open every day of the week, from dawn to dusk (the car-park barrier is shut at 8 pm), for everyone to enjoy and there are plenty of organised events. Our website; www.rspb.org.uk/thelodge is the place to look for all of the events you can enjoy here at RSPB The Lodge including a half term trail and self-led activities available every day during the holidays. These include den building, journey sticks, wildlife challenge sheets and dragonfly making.” The Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (RSPB) is a registered charity. Sheep The sheep will return to the heath towards the end of May/beginning of June. We will keep you up-to-date with their whereabouts via The Listing, our website and social media.

John King, chairman of the Conservators, advised that with Royston expanding and the increased usage of the Heath, “Education” was top of the conservator’s agenda and work had already started on improving the level of communication to the users of Therfield Heath with further public meetings planned. Dogs We are asking for dogs to be kept on leads in the Lankester Hill area while the groundnesting birds attempt to breed (until the end of July). Breeding success is severely reduced by disturbance; the more they are scared off their nests, the lower their chance of success. Think Garden, Think Richard

Garden Focus... Large shrub selection Melbourn garden designer, Richard Arnott

To continue my series of articles for 2018, designing with plants, this month I am going to look at large sized shrub selection. Here is what you should consider when selecting:

important for wildlife to encourage diversity in the planting. Mature size and function. So we have identified Why not that we want a large shrub for a particular function. consider It is important to note that mature heights in books using native and online resources are a guide and through good plants from pruning you can manage an otherwise enormous the palette plant. In this example I would consider using an used for hedgerow planting in the countryside. evergreen such as Cotoneaster lacteus which can The deciduous Guelder rose Viburnum opulus reach 4metres, has summer white flowers and has pretty lace-cap white flowers in summer and red berries for the birds in the autumn and winter. clusters of red berries for the birds in the autumn. It Equally good would be a laurel but here I would also benefits from good autumn colour. Or consider choose the Portuguese laurel Prunus lustitanica the deciduous Purple leaf Elder Sambucus nigra over the common laurel as I prefer the slender, ‘Guincho Purple’ for a bit of moody, divided, purple pointed, darker leaves that grow on red stalks. It is leaves with pink budded flowers opening to white very important to focus on the function of the plant in the summer. Our native spindle Euonymus europaeus ‘Red Cascade’ has good autumn colour Plant form and texture should always be and curious red fruits with orange seeds. Many of considered after function. I touched on this above the variegated hollies offer great evergreen interest when debating the darker green, slender leaf on and berries in the winter too if pollinated by a male a red stem of Prunus lusitanica. The shrub has an holly. I especially like Ilex aquifolium ‘Argentea altogether more subtle appearance that blends Marginata’ for its cream margined, prickly leaves. into its surroundings than its bolder, shiny, larger, more rounded leafed relation Prunus laurocerasus. For more in depth plant advice or garden design For a more open plant form you could consider help please get in touch. a deciduous shrub. Buddleja’s have gained a reputation for being thuggish in the garden but offer an arching, more open growing habit than a laurel with flowers that last a long time. The bad reputation normally stems from neglecting to prune GARDEN DESIGN & BUILD each year. They flower on the new wood so should be pruned in the dormant growing months. I like to use Buddleja davidii ‘Nanho Blue’ which is a little less vigorous with a bushy habit and pretty blue flowers from summer to autumn. Its common name is the butterfly bush so will help to attract peacocks, painted ladies and red admirals especially into the garden.

Scent. We are all tuned into roses as providers of scent in the garden but the quintessential summer scented shrub is the Mock Orange Philadelphus ‘Virginal’. It produces richly scented, white summer flowers. This plant has an RHS award of garden merit which is a good endorsement if ever you need one. I am also fond of Lilac that offers its show in late spring and early summer. Syringa ‘Mme Antoine Buchner’ has crowded heads of mauve flowers bursting with scent from late May onwards. It too has an RHS award of garden merit. Evergreen or deciduous. When I design new shrub borders I like to have a balance of both shrubsI like to have two thirds deciduous to one third evergreen to embrace the changing seasonal element of our green spaces. It is also really

Sour cherry & coconut shortbread Hello my fellow foodies...

and Welcome to May’s edition of The Listing. With two bank holidays and the promise of lovely spring weather to look forward to, what better excuse (should an excuse be needed) to bake a batch of homemade biscuits and invite round that friend you’ve been meaning to catch up with for a cup of tea. This recipe is for shortbread- my all time favourite biscuit, but has a luxurious addition of chocolate and sour cherries, and is simple and quick to make - perfect! You will need: Non stick baking sheet 60g dried sour cherries 125g butter 60g rice flour 120g plain flour 60g caster sugar 50g desiccated coconut 100g dark chocolate (70% cocoa works well) 10g butter Let’s begin by chopping the cherries into small pieces - this will ensure all biscuits get an even share of cherry loveliness. Pop these into your mixer and add the butter, rice flour, plain flour and sugar. Mix until the ingredients all come together to form a ball. Take care not to over mix as this will “toughen up” the mixture making the shortbread dense and heavy. Next, roll out the mixture to approximately 2cm in thickness (roughly a 20cm square). I cut my biscuits to 5cm square, this yielded 16 individual biscuits but you may prefer more uniformity to your biscuits and choose to use a cutter. This mix doesn’t spread when baking but does “puff” a little so intricately designed shapes may be lost when baked, but as always dear reader, experiment and create things of loveliness that work for you! Once you have cut your shapes, place them on a non stick baking sheet (I have a baking sheet reserved only for biscuits and cookies. Everyday use and cleaning deteriorates its surface and I can’t tell how cross use of metallic implements on it make me! And yes, it’s hidden...along with my omelette pan... don’t get me started on that)!

and then pop them into a pre-heated oven for roughly 20 mins at 180°c. They should be a light golden brown colour. Leave them on the tray for 5 minutes and then transfer them to a wire cooling rack to cool completely. Meanwhile we can prepare the finishing touches. So, tip the coconut onto an oven tray and pop under the grill for 3-4 minutes until lightly toasted and just changing to pale golden brown. I would advise standing and watching while this is happening as the transformation from soft, white coconut flakes to a kitchen filled with thick, black, acrid smoke and alarms loudly announcing your failings to the entire neighbourhood seems to happen in the blink of an eye! Once the coconut is toasted leave it to cool. Pop the chocolate and the 10g butter into a heat resistant bowl and place this over a pan of simmering water to melt slowly, stir occasionally to mix the butter through the chocolate (I add this tiny amount of butter to keep a soft texture to the chocolate as it cools, but if you like to feel the “crack and shatter” of the chocolate as you bite, simply leave the butter out). Now for the fun, messy part! Dip, paint, splatter, drizzle or spoon the melted chocolate over the biscuit and sprinkle on the coconut before the chocolate dries or it won’t stick. I spooned chocolate in a diagonal half covered - half naked pattern, but as always make this your own! Leave to set before enjoying with a mug of tea and good friends! Until next time my fellow foodies...

HELP FOR PTSD “Unimagined Bridges” Calling everybody who suffers from stress, PTSD, overwork, anxiety and sleep disturbances! David “Aussie” from Fighting Fit and Iga from Heaven and Earth Health would like to invite you to the showing of “Unimagined Bridges”, a short documentary which presents the use of ear acupuncture to help trauma (PTSD). “Unimagined Bridges” shows how war veterans, fire fighters and those affected by natural disasters (hurricane Katrina) can experience healing thanks to NADA ear acupuncture. It is a powerful testimony of how a simple treatment can be life-changing from both the users’ and practitioners’ perspective. NADA ear acupuncture is now used in over 40 countries. It is the treatment of choice adapted by Acupuncturists Without Borders, an organisation that mirrors

Médecins Sans Frontières. In Europe alone, it is used by many institutions and over 130 prisons, for the deeply balancing effect it has on the mind. Please see HeavenAndEarthHealth.com to learn more or find us on Facebook. Both Iga and Aussie are very passionate about the issue of relieving stress and trauma: from a veteran’s perspective, and as a filmmaker-turned-acupuncturist who had her own set of demons to combat. The documentary will be followed by a short talk and Q&A. There will also be a RAFFLE with fantastic prizes – all proceeds will be used to launch an ear acupuncture treatment group. Unimagined Bridges The Heath, Royston Wednesday 16th May at 7pm

JOHN MOORE CREATIVE PHOTOGRAPHY

When you own a business, you are the face of it. That’s why it so important that you have a highquality, professional headshot. Even if you don’t own a business, a corporate head shot is important. It can be used on your LinkedIn profile, other social media or company website. You never know when you may be asked for an image and so having an up to date portrait can be vital. In a similar way, having high quality images of your products for your marketing materials is critical.

We discovered that there are still 1,600 gas lamps in London and the smallest police station was in a hollowedout light fitting in Trafalgar Square. Our next meeting is on Tuesday 29th May 2pm at Royston Parish Church when Ted Childs, producer of a range of films and television series, will give a talk on Inspector Morse. The Customer is Always Right

“This would be a great place to work if it wasn’t are spending their resources for the shoppers, students, patients, guests, more cautiously. More and etc.!” more people understand they have ‘consumer rights’, and I expect you’ve heard remarks like that as there are plenty of suppliers often as I have. They’re said jokingly (usually), for them to choose from. So but they do sometimes betray a feeling that most will choose to buy their customers or clients should be there for our goods and services from organisations that benefit rather than vice versa… clearly try to satisfy their needs and treat them with proper respect. And yet we all have experience of being customers. We all know what an infuriating Let me ask you whether your organisation has experience it can sometimes be. Haven’t we a clear customer/client service policy? And if all known what it is like to be ignored by sales you work for yourself, what is your attitude to staff, to be misled about what is on offer? Or customers? What can you do – and what do maybe we’ve been given something other than you do – to ensure that people keep coming what we asked for (maybe later than we were back for your goods or services? How can you told we’d get it), or perhaps our complaints met be sure of satisfying their needs, and thereby with feeble excuses? In general, I’m sure we all keeping you and your colleagues in work? have experiences of being treated as of little To paraphrase The Spice Girls, your job today account by the people who are supposedly is to find out what they want, what they really, providing us with some sort of goods or service? really want – and give it to them! RoTary round up

As our current President Graeme Dargie nears the end of his year in power, this month we will be having our traditional President’s weekend away. This always occurs at a place which the president chooses and which has some special place in their heart. This year it is to be in Edinburgh (the clue is in his name, note the Scottish twang!) where along with many culinary delights and other activities we will be visiting the ex-Royal Yacht Britannia. If you fancy a leisurely walk and a good chat then meet us at The Cockerel in Castle Camps, on Sunday 6th May at 9.45am, for the walk and lunch afterwards. A reminder that we would love to see you and your beloved historic vehicle at our show at the May Day Fayre on 7th May, or just come along and admire the splendid array of vehicles on show. www.roystonrotary.com
