Next Deadline

We spent a happy afternoon in the office decorating rocks recently. An odd thing to do you may think but we love the #rocks Friday trend that is catching on in Royston and our villages! The idea is to decorate a rock 15th June and leave it somewhere for other people to find. Then, with their day brightened, the finder has the option to keep the rock or to hide it again having posted a photo on the relevant social media page. You will find #RoystonRocksUK, #BassingbournRocks on Facebook for example. Do look out for our rocks (pictured on the cover) and post on our Facebook page if you find one - they have our logo on the back!

There are a myriad of things to do in your spare time this month if you are not spending it decorating rocks, you really will be spoilt for choice. But whatever you do, don’t forget Father’s Day on Sunday 17th June. Wishing you a lovely Sunny June,

Out & About MelbourN Village Fete

As I write this in early April most of the preparation work is done, the bookings confirmed and the plans completed for this year’s Melbourn Fete starting at midday on Saturday 23rd June and finishing at 5pm, there will not be Music on the Moor this year. This year we will be hoping for a magnificent turn out of vintage, veteran and classic vehicles – if you want to know what the difference is between those descriptions be sure to talk to Richard and his team who will be, as ever, running this side of the event. I spoke recently to Richard and asked him what he had planned. He said, “There will be several exhibitors showing their collections of memorabilia from years past plus the usual range of vehicles – old cars, motorbikes, bicycles and farm machinery including for the first time a collection of stationary engines. If anyone reading this has something they wish to display then please contact me through the website. Another attraction making a return by popular request is lawn mower racing. Two trophies will be competed for, one for overall winner, which was kindly donated by John Wright of Wrights Mower Centre, and one for the most innovative entry – some weird and wonderful creations are expected. More details are on the website”. That sounds exciting and it is great to see the lawn mower racing back. Next I spoke to Gillian Morland who for many years has booked our attractions. I asked Gillian about what we can look forward to this year. She replied, “Well you won’t be short of something to see or do at the Fete this year. We have a Champion Mountain Bike Team displaying some amazing balancing and jumping skills, live animals to handle including snakes and a gecko; a young

magician will do a show for the children and will also walk around the field to demonstrate magic right up close. The Royston Town Band will be playing and a talented local keyboard player will also be performing. You can have a go at archery, or shoot a ball off the top of a water jet, ride on the fairground roundabouts, have a go at crazy golf and bounce on the inflatables and bungee cord trampolines, and the Zorbs will be there. In the arena we will be having a display of Ceroc dancing, tug-o-war contests, the Melbourn Dynamo football teams will be displaying their skills and of course our ever popular egg throwing competition. There will be a separate area for the Dog show with lots of fun classes for dogs and their owners or handlers to enter. We will also have an enormous Newfoundland Dog with its own cart making an appearance. There will be lots of stalls in the field and in the main marquee a Great Bake Off competition.” So you see there are lots of new attractions lined up for this year as well as some of the very popular regulars.

Spotlight On... All Saints Community Hall, Melbourn All Saints Community Hall is an excellent facility in the centre of Melbourn. Whether you have a party, a workshop, a class or almost any other event it provides the perfect venue. Free wi-fi is available and use of the fully equipped kitchen are just some of the benefits hirers can expect to enjoy. This June sees the 10th anniversary of its opening. The previous building on the site was a church hall, which was built in the 1960s, had no insulation and was a rather basic, tired construction. In the early 2000s it was agreed that a new building was needed and so the project was led by the vicar of All Saints Church at the time, Reverend Andrew O’Brien. A great deal of fundraising then ensued as the build would cost £261,000. It was hard work but monies were raised, £100,000 corporate and

£85,000 private donations were generously given. Grants amounted to £32,000 and another unique way of raising funds was to sell bricks at £10 each. It meant that you too could own a small part of this new facility. A book is held at the hall showing who owns the bricks that went into the build. With funds in place the building works could commence in 2006. Finally, the building project was complete and opened in June 2008. The new hall was also to change its status from being a church hall to being a community hall, which took much time, effort and cost to achieve. Even today because the hall is on church land, it often wrongly perceived that it is a church hall. But it is indeed a Community Hall available for all to use, at the heart of the picturesque South Cambridgeshire village.

Keeping Royston residents in touch with their local council A message from our new Mayor for 2018/2019 I feel very privileged and honoured to be standing as your newly elected Mayor. I have lived in Royston for over 35 years and have seen many changes. What’s clear to me is that we need a strong community working together, just to make life that little bit easier for us. No town can survive without the armies of volunteers, serving and giving up their free time. Vera Swallow, the outgoing Mayor, has done an amazing job, this should be noted and I personally thank her for all her sterling work. I am reminded that Royston’s motto is “From good things to better”. My vision for the year is that our industry, whether small or large prospers, that our Town Centre bucks the national trend and we see new ventures opening up. Lastly, for our hard-working voluntary groups, to see them go from their amazing good works to even better and if I and fellow councillors can do our part then this town will go from “good things to better”. We say good-bye to outgoing colleagues and welcome to new ones At the local elections in May all Royston Town Councillors were due for re-election. Five previously standing councillors had decided to retire from the council. They were Sarah Dingley, Victoria Hulstrom, Rod Kennedy, Ben Lewis and Laura Whitford. We will also miss Lindsay Davidson who, over the last 12 years, has given a great deal of time and enormous energy into serving Royston. We would like to thank them for all their commitment and hard work during their time as town councillors and to wish them all the very best for the future. We would like to welcome our new colleagues for the next four years: Amy Bourke-Waite, Ruth Brown, Ian Coll, Thomas Perry, Philip Smith, Emma Squire-Smith and Carol Stanier. They will be joining the re elected councillors John Davison, Mike Harrison, Mark Hughes, Robert Inwood, Iain Leggett, Marguerite Phillips, FJohn Smith and Vera Swallow. ANNUAL TOWN MEETING

The Annual Town meeting took place in March and four members of our Royston Community were honoured by the then Town Mayor, Cllr Vera Swallow for their outstanding services to Royston over many years. Sid Seward – In recognition of his fund raising efforts for MENCAP, which include the annual charity golf day, award collected by Colin Swallow. Rita Turner – In recognition of her services to the Royston community over many years as a Town Councillor. Mike Gabriell collected her posthumous award. Royston Town Football Club – collected by Alan Barlow and in recognition of the successes achieved, including their promotion last year to the Evo-Stik League Southern: Premier Division. Peter Andrew – In recognition of over 20 years fund raising and organising outings for MENCAP, collected by Tina Hunt.

All the fun of the May Fayre 2018 Another exciting May Fayre took place on 7 May when once again the May Fayre team of town councillors, council staff and community volunteers led by our Town Clerk, Caroline Mills, pulled out all the stops to put on a very successful and enjoyable day for our town. The weather was glorious and all the usual attractions were in Priory Memorial gardens to give residents and visitors a fun Bank Holiday. The free ever-popular Bungee Jump and other fun fair attractions were again thoroughly enjoyed. The Eco corner, run by the Town Council’s “Naturally Royston” team, provided a feast for animal lovers with their raptor, bee and hedgehog stalls. There was also a stall showing what you can make with re-cycled items from your home. We would like to thank all those who worked so hard on the day and also North Herts District Council and John O’Conner Grounds Maintenance team for their support.

In March Meridian school hosted 33 German students and their teachers from Royston’s twin town Grossalmerode as part of a combined English and Music trip. Families from Royston Town Band, Royston Town Twinning and Meridian School hosted some of the German students and teachers, which meant students could really gain an insight into family life here. Following a morning of lessons, members of the Royston Town Twinning led the German group on a tour of the town before they headed off to Cambridge for an afternoon of punting. The German musicians of the Grossalmerode band immersed themselves in two days of musical activities organised by Meridian’s Head of Performing Arts, Jenny Warburton.

French Twinning Trip to La Loupe Easter, 2018 The Easter weekend saw 34 twinners, both new and experienced, make their way to La Loupe for the bi-annual trip. We enjoyed a fascinating visit of the medieval town La Ferté Bernard and then went to a steam train museum before boarding the Transvap steam train. The official ceremony in the evening began with the traditional speeches, followed by musical entertainment provided by the local wind band Atout Vents who were joined by musicians from Royston Town Band.

Royston schools have a visit from Local Councillors Once again, Royston Town Council organised another successful round of visits to Royston schools during the Spring Term. Town, District and County Councillors had very enjoyable discussions with the children about local issues that concerned them. As always we were very impressed by the level of understanding and awareness the children displayed about their town. We also explained to them about our various roles in local government and what each respective council did in Royston. We were very pleased to see that, as in previous visits, most of the children we met liked living here and thought it was a good, safe town to grow up in with lots to do and many nice play areas and local clubs to join.

Think Garden, Think Richard Garden Focus... Large shrub selection Melbourn garden designer, Richard Arnott This month I am going to look at early summer hardy perennial selection. As I have discussed in previous articles it is crucial to think about plant form when making plant selections. Try also to think of the plant form in black and white with colour being a secondary consideration, this way it will encourage more interesting plant associations in the border. Colour most certainly should not be dismissed but try to keep in mind that the plant can look interesting before and after flowering. Embrace the whole growth cycle of the plant. Here are a few plant forms to consider when making your selection. The spire plant form helps to add vertical interest in any planting scheme and is a good contrast to mound forming shapes that are made by what I describe as filler plants. Fillers are things like Geranium ‘Brookside’, Nepeta ‘Walkers Low’ and Alchemilla mollis. Some spire shapes are taller than others, Salvia x sylvestris ‘Caradonna’ may only reach

the 400 mm height but the purple spires are good value as they attract the bees and flower for a long period. What’s more they are capable of producing a second flush of flower if cut back. For height and a little more drama I am a big fan of Veronicastrum virginicum ‘Fascination’ which can reach 1.2 metres in the border with light violet blue flowers from summer through to early autumn. The added bonus is it also retains its plant form as it dies back in the autumn too! Plume plant form offer great contrast to the upright spire form. I especially like to use meadow sweet Filipendula ulmaria which offers beautiful plumes of fragrant cream flowers and is especially good as a herbal tea. Thalictrums also have pretty plumes and are one of the earlier flowering taller perennials. The grass Calamagrostis brachytricha has lovely flowers that work especially well in a naturalistic perennial planting. Button and globe plant form is again another contrasting form to consider. Phlomis russeliana has whorls of yellow flowers that are produced on robust square stems that grow to around 950 mm. I primarily use it because it holds its form well into the winter and the dead seed heads look great! Remember that brown is most definitely a colour too! Another favourite is Knautia macedonica that produces buttons of dark pink flowers suspended above the stems. When mixed with other plants it looks like the flowers are suspended in the air.

Daisy plant form is a very happy flowering plant form. Many of its form flower later in the summer like Asters and Rudbeckias, but Echinacea purpurea are earlier in the summer. They have a lovely central cone with petals that fold down like a shuttle cock. They too are especially good as a dying plant form in the border, and like the Phlomis, will attract the seed feeding birders later in the year. Umbel plant form are the horizontal performers that comprise lots of tiny flowers that form an umbrella-like flat flowering head. Plants like yarrow, fennel and hogweed are all classic umbels. Foeniculum vulgare ‘Giant Bronze’ and Foeniculum vulgare purpureum are great for height in the border easily reaching 1.8 metres. They are both forms of fennel and have pretty feathery foliage and a robust flowering stem that is good for winter too. I also like to use Achillea ‘Cerise Queen’ which produces a smaller flat flowering form. There are many hardy perennials that don’t fit neatly into a category and the modern way is to have mixed borders of flowers and shrubs. My Local Life

What’s your favourite local place to eat and drink? For special occasions the ‘Farmhouse at Redcoats’ at Redcoats Green. Great food and friendly staff in a traditional farmhouse with bar and restaurant and new conference and wedding facilities with accommodation. I also enjoy lunch at the John O’Gaunt public house situated in Sutton, they serve lovely home produced food, real ale and Jane and Jago are welcoming and friendly. If it’s a beer with the boys, The Rose & Crown Ashwell with Nicky and Billy. What was the last ﬁlm you watched? ‘Dunkirk’. I was lucky enough to be invited to the film premiere in Leicester Square with my wife. Excellent film depicting the personal fear of our men with their backs to the sea and those that braved the English Channel mostly in pleasure crafts to bring our troops safely home. True British grit.

If you could have a dinner with anyone, who would it be? Most certainly Winston Churchill in my opinion one of the last great Statesman this country has ever known. Although I’m not sure I would have been able to keep up with his wine consumption. My first question would be his views on Brexit. Where do you like to take holidays? Long distance holidays were enjoyed earlier in life and now my wife and I enjoy walking the beautiful beaches and coastal paths of North Norfolk between Hunstanton and Cromer at every opportunity with our two Labrador retrievers, the huge blue skies in Norfolk are a sight to behold indeed. I also enjoy shorthaul trips around the Mediterranean when warmer weather is the issue.

When did you start working for Gilbros Ltd? I started working for the family business in 1966 and enjoyed playing a major part in expanding the cleaning company formed in 1918 by my grandfather into a major distribution company of Health and Safety products, then in 1982 adding the manufacturing of safety footwear to its operations. A Little Further Afield Kaleidoscope of Life: Ely Cathedral’s Flower Festival Highly regarded by historians and architects from all over the world for its beauty and size, Ely Cathedral is widely acknowledged as ‘one of the wonders of the Medieval world’. Visible for miles around, the Cathedral is often referred to as ‘The Ship of the Fens’.

As well as being a major visitor attraction, the Cathedral serves as a cultural focal point for East Anglia by providing a unique venue for the arts & music, for exhibitions, lectures, concerts and theatre and, this month, for a magnificent Flower Festival.

The present building dates from 1081 and is a remarkable example of both Romanesque and Norman architecture. In addition to its unique Octagon Tower and magnificent Lady Chapel, Ely has the third longest nave of any UK Cathedral. The Cathedral’s role today is not so far removed from its days as a Benedictine monastery and offers regular daily worship with a special emphasis on choral music. It still maintains a resident choir of 22 choristers and six lay clerks and so continues the tradition of choral evensong every day of the week during term time.

The Festival’s creative Director is Chelsea gold medal winner, Roger Woolnough. Roger has overall responsibility for coordinating more than 50,000 blooms to create up to100 spectacular exhibits with the help of over 35 Flower Guilds from across the eastern region from Biggleswade to Lowestoft. Highlights will include a water feature, a floral arch the length of Ely’s impressive nave and an entire area dedicated to commemorating the end of WWI. The crowning glory is a 12 metre wide kaleidoscope of flowers positioned in splendour directly under Ely’s famous Octagon

Tower. Roger was the mastermind behind Ely’s highly successful 2013 festival which welcomed 20,000 visitors through the doors in four days, and is delighted to be back at the helm. “ Ely provides a magnificent backdrop for any event but the sheer size and beauty of the building is a great inspiration for any artist or arranger. I am delighted to have the opportunity to be working on Ely’s Festival for a second time as it gives me a wonderful opportunity to design and create displays on a completely different level.” One of the most noteworthy displays will feature the new Ely Cathedral Rose. The rose has been produced by award winning East Anglian rose growers, Peter Beales, recognised worldwide for the preservation of old fashioned, historic and rare roses. As a specialist propagator of new blooms, they have won many prestigious awards including 24 Gold medals at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show, which is where the Ely Cathedral rose was officially unveiled. This highly scented, repeat flowering shrub plant produces a wonderful multi-headed display of deep red buds open to reveal double, ruffled blooms which was much admired by HRH Prince Charles at the Sandringham Flower Show this year, when he was inspecting a few of the new unnamed new species. Throughout the four day event there will be musical performances, talks and demonstrations by floral experts, delicious food & drink outlets and a bespoke Gift & Craft Marquee located in the Cathedral grounds.

RotARY rOUND uP This is a very busy period for Rotary. Our French twin Rotary club from Parayle-Monial will visit us, a wonderful social event that tests both our French and their English. It always ends with ‘The Ashes’ competition, a series of - often silly - games to decide who holds the next visit, somehow the away team always seems to win

and must be the next hosts! It is also the final month for our current President, Graeme Dargie, and he will hand over power to incoming President David Blundell at the Presidents changeover meal to be held at Madingley Hall. Roysia Womens Club After Easter we had a social and tombola in aid of our charity. We have also had speakers such as Brian Carline on ‘Days of Dolly Blue and Izal’ with amusing memories of our lives during the 1940’s and 50’s; Carol Harris talking about the ‘Women’s Land Army’ during the Second World War and showing slides and outfits; Georgie Perrot on the colourful ‘History of the Royal Ballet’ with costumes

Businesses in North Herts are invited to attend a FREE Energy Efficiency Breakfast Workshop at NHDCâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s new offices on Gernon Road, Letchworth on Wednesday 6th June, 8 - 10am, hosted by Economic Development at North Herts District Council and the Letchworth Heritage Foundation, in partnership with the â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;Business Energy Efficiency Programmeâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;. Industry experts will outline the business case for investing in energy efficiency, showing how the newest innovations and grant funding opportunities will contribute to significant cost and carbon savings for businesses. The Building Research Establishment (BRE) will be talking about new innovations in building energy efficiency and Howard Crompton

(NHDC) will talk about the refurb of NHDCs Council offices. Conservators of Therfield Heath & Greens and with improving weather comes increased usage by everyone. Please remember that above all, the majority of Therfield Heath is a nature reserve and should be treated as such by all who visit it. Sheep-The sheep will return to the heath in June. Therfield Heath is a SSSI for its open chalk grassland, so that is what we manage it for. If we donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t make an effort to keep the grassland open, it will revert to scrub and eventually woodland. Scrub has its place and is beneficial for many species, but if left unmanaged, would cover the site entirely. We need to graze the site because the alternative of cutting and collecting is not viable on much of the site: Some slopes are too steep and it is prohibitively expensive. The grazing helps to keep the scrub at bay and the sward short, encouraging the huge variety of wildflowers and insects the site is renowned for. So, please bear with any temporary fencing around the sheep and please keep all dogs on leads, for the sake of the welfare of the sheep and the management of the site. RoYSTON DISTRICT & lOCAL hISTORY sOCIETY Our May meeting began with the AGM, then a very interesting talk from Richard Till â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;Who Do You Think You Are.â&#x20AC;&#x2122; Richard explained that Celts have strong prominent features, clearly defined chins are relatively dark skinned with black or red hair. Typical Celts are Terry Wogan and Gaby Logan. Anglo Saxons have oval shaped faces, with high cheek

bones and regular features. For example Dirk Bogarde and Audrey Hepburn. It is interesting to look around and try to work out who comes from where.

Our next season begins on th October and will be held in the Heritage Hall, Town Hall at 8pm. It is entitled Rectors of Therfield by Richard Genochio. Free to members

A Fantastic BBQ Rub

James Day, Head Chef at the awardwinning Belle Freehouse in Bassingbourn shares the secret of his BBQ Rub. Assemble your ingredients: 1 tbsp cumin 1 tbsp smoked paprika 1 tbsp garlic powder 1 tbsp brown sugar 1 tbsp cayenne pepper 1 lemon zested (reserve juice) Fresh parsley Rubbed thyme (small handful) A few fresh chillies (depending on heat preference) or chilli flakes will suffice Combine all the dry ingredients in a bowl, season with freshly cracked black pepper and salt flakes, being careful not to be too generous with the salt as it may dry out the meat, and mix well. Rub the dry mix into or over your chosen meat and leave it to rest, refrigerated and covered, for a minimum of two hours - however overnight would be preferable. Before you begin cooking, remember to remove the meat from the fridge in advance to allow time for it to come to room temperature. When cooking, use the juice that has been drawn out the meat as it rested to baste it. Once cooked, grab your reserved lemon juice and squeeze over finally finishing with fresh parsley. Summer Makeup Tips We are certainly hoping for some sunshine over the next few months. If your sitting in the sun on a beach, in a beer garden or dressing up in the heat you want to be sure your makeup stays in place. Here I have my top tips on summer makeup.

Firstly, I’d recommend using a oil free moisturiser especially if you already have oily skin. A tinted moisturiser can be handy. If you feel comfortable you can replace foundation for tinted moisturizer. Priming your face is particularly important as it’ll help to keep your makeup in place. If you feel comfortable to avoid concealer and foundation then skip it. If you do use foundation and concealer, use a damp sponge and apply a very thin coat. Make sure your foundation has an SPF as well. The less you put on the less there is to sweat off. I’d recommend using a powder brush and dusting a loose

translucent powder around your T-zone but be sure to be very light handed when doing so. Regarding eye makeup, use a waterproof eyeliner and mascara. I’d avoid dark eyeshadow and cat eye liner as this can be very vunerable to smudging. Remember to use primer on your eyes as this will hold the eye makeup better.

Royston townswomen Report In May Richard Thomas took us for a stroll along the Fosse Way, a Roman road which links Exeter in the Southwest and Lincoln on the other side of England.

He later went onto work at Guy’s Hospital making over 200 wax models of the human body showing symptoms of a variety of illnesses.
