Welcome We spent a happy afternoon in the office decorating rocks recently. An odd thing to do you may think but we love the #rocks trend that is catching on in Royston and our villages! The idea is to decorate a rock and leave it somewhere for other people to find. Then, with their day brightened, the finder has the option to keep the rock or to hide it again having posted a photo on the relevant social media page. You will find #RoystonRocksUK, #BassingbournRocks on Facebook for example. Do look out for our rocks (pictured on the cover) and post on our Facebook page if you find one - they have our logo on the back!

Next Deadline Friday 15th June

There are a myriad of things to do in your spare time this month if you are not spending it decorating rocks, you really will be spoilt for choice. But whatever you do, don’t forget Father’s Day on Sunday 17th June.

Out & About

MelbourN Village Fete

are lots of new attractions lined up for this year as well as some of the very popular regulars.

As I write this in early April most of the preparation work is done, the bookings confirmed and the plans completed for this year’s Melbourn Fete starting at midday on Saturday 23rd June and finishing at 5pm, there will not be Music on the Moor this year.

There will be an amazing selection of animals to hold and see including tarantula spiders, scorpions, corn snakes, tree frogs, millipedes, Madagascan hissing cockroaches and geckos

This year we will be hoping for a magnificent turn out of vintage, veteran and classic vehicles – if you want to know what the difference is between those descriptions be sure to talk to Richard and his team who will be, as ever, running this side of the event. I spoke recently to Richard and asked him what he had planned. He said, “There will be several exhibitors showing their collections of memorabilia from years past plus the usual range of vehicles – old cars, motorbikes, bicycles and farm machinery including for the first time a collection of stationary engines. If anyone reading this has something they wish to display then please contact me through the website. Another attraction making a return by popular request is lawn mower racing. Two trophies will be competed for, one for overall winner, which was kindly donated by John Wright of Wrights Mower Centre, and one for the most innovative entry – some weird and wonderful creations are expected. More details are on the website”. That sounds exciting and it is great to see the lawn mower racing back. Next I spoke to Gillian Morland who for many years has booked our attractions. I asked Gillian about what we can look forward to this year. She replied, “Well you won’t be short of something to see or do at the Fete this year. We have a Champion Mountain Bike Team displaying some amazing balancing and jumping skills, live animals to handle including snakes and a gecko; a young magician will do a show for the children and will also walk around the field to demonstrate magic right up close. The Royston Town Band will be playing and a talented local keyboard player will also be performing. You can have a go at archery, or shoot a ball off the top of a water jet, ride on the fairground roundabouts, have a go at crazy golf and bounce on the inflatables and bungee cord trampolines, and the Zorbs will be there. In the arena we will be having a display of Ceroc dancing, tug-o-war contests, the Melbourn Dynamo football teams will be displaying their skills and of course our ever popular egg throwing competition. There will be a separate area for the Dog show with lots of fun classes for dogs and their owners or handlers to enter. We will also have an enormous Newfoundland Dog with its own cart making an appearance. There will be lots of stalls in the field and in the main marquee a Great Bake Off competition.” So you see there

As always we will have locally produced top quality food on offer at reasonable prices. In addition to our locally sourced burgers and hot dogs from Leeches butchers, Russell’s butchers will have a hog roast. We will also have a noodle bar. For those with a sweet tooth doughnuts and candyfloss will be available. Top quality coffee from our regular barista will be available and last but certainly not least we will be having an amazing array of homemade cakes and afternoon tea in the pavilion. Refreshingly cool alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks will be available from the bar including fine ales, beers and wines. So we are ready for an amazing day, remember all profits made go to good causes, charities and activities in our village. Please visit our website for more details and competition details. Lastly, if you are able to give up a little time to help us over the weekend we would love to hear from you, we can only do this whilst we have a band of volunteers to lend a hand, it’s great fun and very rewarding so please contact us through the website. Visit our website for up to date details of the day www.melbournfete.co.uk. Please like us on Facebook. Saturday 23rd June, Melbourn Village Fete 1 to 5pm. There is free off road parking including disabled parking along the Moor, please follow the signs

Lawn mower racing from a previous year, do you have a mower and an inner Lewis Hamilton temperament? If yes visit our website for more details.

Smoothie Ice Lollies

Create the perfect treat with your little ones to enjoy during the summer months. These are much healthier than shop brought alternatives as they contain far less sugar. All you need is an ice lolly mould, some fresh fruits, natural yogurt and milk. For this recipe you can make a couple of different coloured smoothie mixes. This is a perfect way to practice colours with your child! Encourage your child to wash their hands before starting and let them wash the fruit before preparing the smoothie mixes. Pop the fruits into a blender with the yogurt and blend using the milk to loosen. Repeat if you have made different coloured mixes and layer them. This allows your child to be creative but do assist them so they don’t overfill the moulds. Leave for 3 hours in the freezer until frozen solid and then enjoy!

Spotlight On...

All Saints Community Hall, Melbourn All Saints Community Hall is an excellent facility in the centre of Melbourn. Whether you have a party, a workshop, a class or almost any other event it provides the perfect venue. Free wi-fi is available and use of the fully equipped kitchen are just some of the benefits hirers can expect to enjoy. This June sees the 10th anniversary of its opening. The previous building on the site was a church hall, which was built in the 1960s, had no insulation and was a rather basic, tired construction. In the early 2000s it was agreed that a new building was needed and so the project was led by the vicar of All Saints Church at the time, Reverend Andrew O’Brien. A great deal of fundraising then ensued as the build would cost £261,000. It was hard work but monies were raised, £100,000 corporate and £85,000 private donations were generously given. Grants amounted to £32,000 and another unique way of raising funds was to sell bricks at £10 each. It meant that you too could own a small part of this new facility. A book is held at the hall showing who owns the bricks that went into the build. With funds in place the building works could commence in 2006. Finally, the building project was complete and opened in June 2008. The new hall was also to change its status from being a church hall to being a community hall, which took much time, effort and cost to achieve. Even today because the hall is on church land, it often wrongly perceived that it is a church hall. But it is indeed a Community Hall available for all to use, at the heart of the picturesque South 10

Cambridgeshire village. This month the hall celebrates its 10th birthday. To commemorate this milestone, Friday 22nd June sees the start of a weekend of celebratory events. The first will be film club night, a very popular monthly event, where as well as the usual soft drink and popcorn, a licensed bar will be available. On Saturday, there will be the highly entertaining Prosecco Monologues, starring local actress Claire Hogan and friends. This will include a light supper and will also have a licensed bar. The finale to the weekend of celebrations on Sunday is an Afternoon Tea with Bubbles and superb musical entertainment from Roy Crosby’s Great Little Jazz Band. All Saints Community Hall in Melbourn has so much to offer as a venue and provides a great space at excellent value. It really is a hall for all. Think Garden, Think Richard

Garden Focus... early summer selection Melbourn garden designer, Richard Arnott

This month I am going to look at early summer hardy perennial selection. As I have discussed in previous articles it is crucial to think about plant form when making plant selections. Try also to think of the plant form in black and white with colour being a secondary consideration, this way it will encourage more interesting plant associations in the border. Colour most certainly should not be dismissed but try to keep in mind that the plant can look interesting before and after flowering. Embrace the whole growth cycle of the plant. Here are a few plant forms to consider when making your selection. The spire plant form helps to add vertical interest in any planting scheme and is a good contrast to mound forming shapes that are made by what I describe as filler plants. Fillers are things like Geranium ‘Brookside’, Nepeta ‘Walkers Low’ and Alchemilla mollis. Some spire shapes are taller than others, Salvia x sylvestris ‘Caradonna’ may only reach the 400 mm height but the purple spires are good value as they attract the bees and flower for a long period. What’s more they are capable of producing a second flush of flower if cut back. For height and a little more drama I am a big fan of Veronicastrum virginicum ‘Fascination’ which can reach 1.2 metres in the border with light violet blue flowers from summer through to early autumn. The added bonus is it also retains its plant form as it dies back in the autumn too! Plume plant form offer great contrast to the upright spire form. I especially like to use meadow sweet Filipendula ulmaria which offers beautiful plumes of fragrant cream flowers and is especially good as a herbal tea. Thalictrums also have pretty plumes and are one of the earlier flowering taller perennials. The grass Calamagrostis brachytricha has lovely flowers that work especially well in a naturalistic perennial planting. Button and globe plant form is again another contrasting form to consider. Phlomis russeliana has whorls of yellow flowers that are produced on robust square stems that grow to around 950 mm. I primarily use it because it holds its form well into the winter and the dead seed heads look great! Remember that brown is most definitely a colour too! Another favourite is Knautia macedonica that produces buttons of dark pink flowers suspended above the stems. When mixed with other plants it looks like the flowers are suspended in the air.

Daisy plant form is a very happy flowering plant form. Many of its form flower later in the summer like Asters and Rudbeckias, but Echinacea purpurea are earlier in the summer. They have a lovely central cone with petals that fold down like a shuttle cock. They too are especially good as a dying plant form in the border, and like the Phlomis, will attract the seed feeding birders later in the year. Umbel plant form are the horizontal performers that comprise lots of tiny flowers that form an umbrella-like flat flowering head. Plants like yarrow, fennel and hogweed are all classic umbels. Foeniculum vulgare ‘Giant Bronze’ and Foeniculum vulgare purpureum are great for height in the border easily reaching 1.8 metres. They are both forms of fennel and have pretty feathery foliage and a robust flowering stem that is good for winter too. I also like to use Achillea ‘Cerise Queen’ which produces a smaller flat flowering form. There are many hardy perennials that don’t fit neatly into a category and the modern way is to have mixed borders of flowers and shrubs. For more in depth plant advice or garden design help please get in touch.

The Conservators of Therfield Heath & Greens This the second update from The Conservators of Therfield Heath & Greens and with improving weather comes increased usage by everyone. Please remember that above all, the majority of Therfield Heath is a nature reserve and should be treated as such by all who visit it. Sheep-The sheep will return to the heath in June. Therfield Heath is a SSSI for its open chalk grassland, so that is what we manage it for. If we don’t make an effort to keep the grassland open, it will revert to scrub and eventually woodland. Scrub has its place and is beneficial for many species, but if left unmanaged, would cover the site entirely. We need to graze the site because the alternative of cutting and collecting is not viable on much of the site: Some slopes are too steep and it is prohibitively expensive. The grazing helps to keep the scrub at bay and the sward short, encouraging the huge variety of wildflowers and insects the site is renowned for. So, please bear with any temporary fencing around the sheep and please keep all dogs on leads, for the sake of the welfare of the

sheep and the management of the site. You can stay up to date via The Listing, the map on the Heath Sports Club, our website and social media. Volunteers- With a group of volunteers, we have started to tackle some of the saplings and encroaching scrub at the bottom of the Church Hill. We set up this group to help us manage the site and are extremely grateful for their input. Lankester Hill (Eastern side of Therfield Heath, above the chalk track and from the Golf club to the Rifle range) You will have seen four new signs have been erected to protect the ground nesting birds on Lankester Hill. Meadow Pipits and Skylarks are breeding until the end of July so we ask that to stop dogs quartering, either take a wide berth or have them on a lead in this area. Please keep yourselves, your dogs and your children on the paths and do not allow dogs to chase the birds or to scare them.

My Local Life

Clive Gilley The British Window & General Cleaning Company have been providing professional cleaning services (windows, carpets and offices) for commercial companies and private clients in and around Hertfordshire, Cambridgeshire and Bedfordshire for over 100 years. We spoke to Clive Gilley to find out a little about the man behind the business. Where do you live? I have lived in Steeple Morden for the last 40 years. What’s your favourite local place to eat and drink? For special occasions the ‘Farmhouse at Redcoats’ at Redcoats Green. Great food and friendly staff in a traditional farmhouse with bar and restaurant and new conference and wedding facilities with accommodation. I also enjoy lunch at the John O’Gaunt public house situated in Sutton, they serve lovely home produced food, real ale and Jane and Jago are welcoming and friendly. If it’s a beer with the boys, The Rose & Crown Ashwell with Nicky and Billy. What was the last film you watched? ‘Dunkirk’. I was lucky enough to be invited to the film premiere in Leicester Square with my wife. Excellent film depicting the personal fear of our men with their backs to the sea and those that braved the English Channel mostly in pleasure crafts to bring our troops safely home. True British grit. When did you start working for Gilbros Ltd? I started working for the family business in 1966 and enjoyed playing a major part in expanding the cleaning company formed in 1918 by my grandfather into a major distribution company of Health and Safety products, then in 1982 adding the manufacturing of safety footwear to its operations. The original cleaning company today is being run by a fourth generation of the family Edward Gilley. After 52 years seeing the company trade I get great pleasure keeping in contact with long established customers and our workforce.

sure I would have been able to keep up with his wine consumption. My first question would be his views on Brexit. Where do you like to take holidays? Long distance holidays were enjoyed earlier in life and now my wife and I enjoy walking the beautiful beaches and coastal paths of North Norfolk between Hunstanton and Cromer at every opportunity with our two Labrador retrievers, the huge blue skies in Norfolk are a sight to behold indeed. I also enjoy shorthaul trips around the Mediterranean when warmer weather is the issue. What annoys you? Dodging pedestrians in Royston not looking where they’re going tapping away on mobile phones. What sport do you follow? Since becoming less active in golf and contact sports I enjoy watching it done by the professionals, Rugby Union much preferred over football, F1 Motor Racing, Golf especially The Ryder Cup and Tennis the pinnacle being Wimbledon.

If you could have a dinner with anyone, who would it be? Most certainly Winston Churchill in my opinion one of the last great Statesman this country has ever known. Although I’m not

A Little Further Afield

Kaleidoscope of Life: Ely Cathedral’s Flower Festival Highly regarded by historians and architects from all over the world for its beauty and size, Ely Cathedral is widely acknowledged as ‘one of the wonders of the Medieval world’. Visible for miles around, the Cathedral is often referred to as ‘The Ship of the Fens’.

The present building dates from 1081 and is a remarkable example of both Romanesque and Norman architecture. In addition to its unique Octagon Tower and magnificent Lady Chapel, Ely has the third longest nave of any UK Cathedral. The Cathedral’s role today is not so far removed from its days as a Benedictine monastery and offers regular daily worship with a special emphasis on choral music. It still maintains a resident choir of 22 choristers and six lay clerks and so continues the tradition of choral evensong every day of the week during term time. As well as being a major visitor attraction, the Cathedral serves as a cultural focal point for East Anglia by providing a unique venue for the arts & music, for exhibitions, lectures, concerts and theatre and, this month, for a magnificent Flower Festival. The Festival’s creative Director is Chelsea gold medal winner, Roger Woolnough. Roger has overall responsibility for coordinating more than 50,000 blooms to create up to100 spectacular exhibits with the help of over 35 Flower Guilds from across the eastern region from Biggleswade to Lowestoft. Highlights will include a water feature, a floral arch the length of Ely’s impressive nave and an entire area dedicated to commemorating the end of WWI. The crowning glory is a 12 metre wide kaleidoscope of flowers positioned in splendour directly under Ely’s famous Octagon Tower.

22

Roger was the mastermind behind Ely’s highly successful 2013 festival which welcomed 20,000 visitors through the doors in four days, and is delighted to be back at the helm. “Ely provides a magnificent backdrop for any event but the sheer size and beauty of the building is a great inspiration for any artist or arranger. I am delighted to have the opportunity to be working on Ely’s Festival for a second time as it gives me a wonderful opportunity to design and create displays on a completely different level.” One of the most noteworthy displays will feature the new Ely Cathedral Rose. The rose has been produced by award winning East Anglian rose growers, Peter Beales, recognised worldwide for the preservation of old fashioned, historic and rare roses. As a specialist propagator of new blooms, they have won many prestigious awards including 24 Gold medals at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show, which is where the Ely Cathedral rose was officially unveiled. This highly scented, repeat flowering shrub plant produces a wonderful multi-headed display of deep red buds open to reveal double, ruffled blooms which was much admired by HRH Prince Charles at the Sandringham Flower Show this year, when he was inspecting a few of the new unnamed new species. Throughout the four day event there will be musical performances, talks and demonstrations by floral experts, delicious food & drink outlets and a bespoke Gift & Craft Marquee located in the Cathedral grounds.

RotARY rOUND uP

This is a very busy period for Rotary. Our French twin Rotary club from Paray-le-Monial will visit us, a wonderful social event that tests both our French and their English.

It always ends with ‘The Ashes’ competition, a series of - often silly - games to decide who holds the next visit, somehow the away team always seems to win and must be the next hosts! It is also the final month for our current President, Graeme Dargie, and he will hand over power to incoming President David Blundell at the Presidents changeover meal to be held at Madingley Hall. The incoming committees will also be busy planning their programmes for the year and presenting them at a special meeting.

A Fantastic BBQ Rub

James Day, Head Chef at the award-winning Belle Freehouse in Bassingbourn shares the secret of his BBQ Rub. Assemble your ingredients: 1 tbsp cumin 1 tbsp smoked paprika 1 tbsp garlic powder 1 tbsp brown sugar 1 tbsp cayenne pepper 1 lemon zested (reserve juice) Fresh parsley Rubbed thyme (small handful) A few fresh chillies (depending on heat preference) or chilli flakes will suffice The Belle Freehouse and Restaurant North End, Bassingbourn, SG8 5NZ www.thebellefreehouse.co.uk 01763 250921

Combine all the dry ingredients in a bowl, season with freshly cracked black pepper and salt flakes, being careful not to be too generous with the salt as it may dry out the meat, and mix well. Rub the dry mix into or over your chosen meat and leave it to rest, refrigerated and covered, for a minimum of two hours - however overnight would be preferable. Before you begin cooking, remember to remove the meat from the fridge in advance to allow time for it to come to room temperature. When cooking, use the juice that has been drawn out the meat as it rested to baste it. Once cooked, grab your reserved lemon juice and squeeze over finally finishing with fresh parsley.

From Tallulah’s Kitchen

Citrus and Gin Drizzle cake Hello my fellow foodies...

Saturday 9th of June marks the tenth anniversary of World Gin Day. Now, it is no secret in the Le Fey house and circle of friends that I am partial to the odd gin and I do favour the more citrus flavours over the spiced or woody ones. So what better way to celebrate than to combine gin and cake? However, if you are not a gin fan simply leave it out, the addition of a little extra juice to the icing will make up the quantities. As for how long will the cake keep, I am afraid I can not tell you as I have never had any left to find out! You will need a 20cm square baking tin, that has been greased and lined. For the cake 160g butter- room temperature works best 160g caster sugar 3 eggs from happy and healthy free running hens or ducks Finely grated zest of one lemon and one grapefruit 110g plain flour 1 tsp baking powder 50g ground almonds Juice of one lemon For the icing 100g granulated sugar Finely grated zest and juice of 1/2 grapefruit A goodly measure of your favourite gin After you have lined your baking tray and a set your oven to 170°C, let’s begin making the sponge. Cream your butter and caster sugar until the mixture becomes fluffy and light in texture and pale in colour. Now add in the eggs one by one, whisking well between each addition. Be aware that if the eggs are added too quickly, or not whisked in enough, the mixture may split at this stage. Now stir in the lemon zest, flour, baking powder, ground almond and the lemon juice and stir carefully to mix all the ingredients together but not to knock all the air out of the batter.

the icing. Begin by zesting one whole lemon and half the grapefruit. Combine the zest and the juice then add the granulated sugar and stir. Now, the secret to a good drizzle cake, I believe, is in the “crunch and zingy-ness” of the icing. After way too much research, I have concluded that the consistency of the icing should be such that the sugar remains partially undissolved. So into the sugar, zest and juice add just enough gin so as the sugar remains “gritty” within the mixture. Have no fear dear reader, should you be “over generous” with your gin simply add more sugar until you have the texture we are looking for.

Now all that remains to be done is for you to pour the icing over the top of the cake after it has cooled a little. Some people prick holes in the cake surface and some pour onto a completely cold cake. Do whatever works best for you, my preference is a warm (but not hot) cake, I don’t make holes in the surface and I tend to add the icing in two or three goes preferring to top up the icing as it is absorbed into the cake rather than flood it in one go. Leave to cool completely, then cut into pieces and enjoy with your favourite G&T or tea without the “G!” Happy World Gin Day!

Tallulah Le Fey x

Pour the cake batter into the tin and place in the centre of the oven for approximately 30 minutes or until the cake has turned a golden brown colour and is springy to the touch. While the cake is baking let’s make up

RoYSTON DISTRICT & lOCAL hISTORY sOCIETY Our May meeting began with the AGM, then a very interesting talk from Richard Till ‘Who Do You Think You Are.’ Richard explained that Celts have strong prominent features, clearly defined chins are relatively dark skinned with black or red hair. Typical Celts are Terry Wogan and Gaby Logan. Anglo Saxons have oval shaped faces, with high cheek bones and regular features. For example Dirk Bogarde and Audrey Hepburn. It is interesting to look around and try to work out who comes from where.

MUSEUM MUSINGS: A Friendly Gravedigger Joseph Towne was born in Royston in 1808. As a young man, he liked making clay models of animals. There’s lots of clay around so there was plenty for him to work with.

human skeleton. We have a copy of an article about this which describes how he was “aided by pictures in books and separate bones which he borrowed occasionally from a friendly gravedigger”.

One day, he wanted a new challenge and set himself the Joseph made the model in task of creating a wax model of a his bedroom at home. One night, his father came into his room and saw the model for first time. It was around 80cm high and was quite an impressive achievement. He suggested that Joseph should take it to the anatomy professor at Cambridge. Aged 18, he submitted the model to the Royal Society of Arts and was awarded a silver medal. He later went onto work at Guy’s Hospital making over 200 wax models of the human body

showing symptoms of a variety of illnesses. Unfortunately, we don’t have much in our collection about Joseph. We do have an image of his father, Thomas Towne, who was a Reverend and an artist. It would see this artistic trait was passed on to his son. Sometimes history can be really inspiring. Joseph had an amazing talent that led to a life time of wonderful, useful and interesting work. Wouldn’t it be great if we could all find a “friendly gravedigger” – someone to help us achieve our ambitions!

A Cracked Voices Story Jesus from Hut 7 | Klaus Kellner This is one of the stories of forgotten voices which inspired the song cycle ‘Cracked Voices’ written by Garahm Palmer and Jenni Pinnock. Based on original research, this ‘incredible project’ (Cambridge105 radio) gives voice to forgotten characters from the borderlands of Hertfordshire and Cambridgeshire.

Klaus Kellner was…not sulky, nor argumentative, and seemed to fit in fairly well with the other prisoners in his hut. Then, quite suddenly… he ‘got religion’…He let his hair grow long, and in this age of cropped heads, his mane of copper locks looked distinctly odd. He gave up shaving, and soon had a full reddish tinged beard….He wrote out such bits of the Bible as he could remember…and he bound them together with two bits of cardboard. Armed with this, he went from hut to hut attempting to preach…Most of the time he was kicked out, either verbally, or even sometimes physically, but he bore no malice. He forgave them, he said, as he picked himself up from the ground outside the huts, and he inevitably returned later. In time, he came to be known as ‘Jesus from Hut 7’ and in his appearance and manner, he grew more and more like one of the ancient Prophets. Alfred J Christiansen, Unpublished Memoir (IWM Archive) Despite the barbed-wire, water-tower and breezeblock huts with corrugated iron roofs, Camp 29 was not there. For the whole of the Second World War it did not exist. It was definitely not on the heath a few hundred yards from Royston’s High Street. Not one newspaper dared mention its construction or the six hundred Italian, and then German, Prisoners of War living behind its fences. Marked out by a coloured patch on their chocolate brown uniforms, prisoners such as Klaus Kellner and Alfred J Christiansen

existed there in limbo, only ever permitted out under guard to work for the enemy on the nearby labour-starved farms. In return, they were paid in plastic discs which they exchanged at the canteen for tobacco, razor blades or sickly-sweet cake. As bombers from the neighbouring airfields grouped high above the camp, the inmates tried to keep busy to block out any thought of their families back home and where the planes were headed. Apart from endless games of football, the inmates spent their time putting together a make-shift theatre and the British camp commandant supplied a ropey piano. Things ticked along while sport and the arts made not thinking easier. But early in 1945 a sudden intensive search of the camp by an outside British Army unit changed everything. Men’s belongings were rifled, the theatre was all-but destroyed. Nothing untoward was found. It would take weeks for the camp to get back to normal and in Hut 16 the intrusion rankled deeply. The balance had been disrupted and would only be restored with an equally obnoxious act of defiance. All it took was a sheet, some pillow cases and a few bottles of ink. That April, on Hitler’s birthday, locals woke to find, fluttering from the camp’s water-tower, a full-size German swastika. Needless to say, it was never reported.

WWI Centenary Cycle Challenge

Hertfordshire based hospice launches WW1 Centenary Cycle Challenege.

Richard Harbon, Community Fundraiser at Garden House Hospice Care, commented:

Garden House Hospice Care, in North Hertfordshire, has set a unique and memorable cycle challenge in September to commemorate 100 years since the end of the Great War.

“The WW1 Centenary Cycle Challenge is a unique opportunity to be part of something that will provide life-long memories whilst enabling cyclists to raise vital funds for Garden House Hospice Care, which serves the communities of North Herts and Stevenage. “

Setting off from the UK’s first hospice, St Christopher’s Hospice in South London, cyclists will follow the Pilgrims Way to Folkestone. Over the next three days they will follow the old front line from the historic Belgium town of Ypres, travelling south over the battlefields at Loos, Vimy Ridge and the Somme. The ride will finish at the site of the signing of the Armistice in the Forest of Compiegne.

Places on this once in a lifetime trip, scheduled for 14th to 17th September, are limited. The cost of the ride is £490 and riders are expected to raise over £1000 for Garden House Hospice Care. Riders are expected to be at least moderate cyclists with moderate level of fitness to ride approximately 275 miles in total; there will be a few groups to offer varied routes and distances each day.

Summer Makeup Tips

We are certainly hoping for some sunshine over the next few months. If your sitting in the sun on a beach, in a beer garden or dressing up in the heat you want to be sure your makeup stays in place. Here I have my top tips on summer makeup.

Firstly, I’d recommend using a oil free moisturiser especially if you already have oily skin. A tinted moisturiser can be handy. If you feel comfortable you can replace foundation for tinted moisturizer. Priming your face is particularly important as it’ll help to keep your makeup in place. If you feel comfortable to avoid concealer and foundation then skip it. If you do use foundation and concealer, use a damp sponge and apply a very thin coat. Make sure your foundation has an SPF as well. The less you put on the less there is to sweat off. I’d recommend using a powder brush and dusting a loose translucent

powder around your T-zone but be sure to be very light handed when doing so. Regarding eye makeup, use a waterproof eyeliner and mascara. I’d avoid dark eyeshadow and cat eye liner as this can be very vunerable to smudging. Remember to use primer on your eyes as this will hold the eye makeup better. When it comes to lips remember to prepare with a lip balm. The sun can make your lips super dry. I’d use a lip gloss or tinted lip balm instead and avoid dark colours. If you become victim to smudging lipstick dark colours are far more visible.

How do you deal with a diagnosis of Parkinson’s? Dancing is probably the last thing on your mind…

Parkinson’s & the Tango Effect, written by Kate Swindlehurst is the story of an incredible year in her life as a woman with Parkinson’s. It began with a tango lesson and grew into an exploration of the healing potential of the dance. Quirky, intimate and unashamedly literary, the book takes an unflinching look at the dark side but also at reasons to celebrate. It builds on research on the impact of dance on Parkinson’s symptoms and takes it a stage further, with a behind-the-scenes record of private lessons and contributions from tango teachers. It documents the emotional and social benefits of the dance and its impact on

the quality of life. Parkinson’s & the Tango Effect challenges our perceptions of disability. It is essential reading for those with a professional interest in dance and Parkinson’s, and for researchers in the field. It’s also a book for the ordinary reader, for those living with a chronic condition, and for the tango and Parkinson’s communities worldwide. Serenade to Music

Royston and District Choral Society’s next concert features ‘A Sprig of Thyme’, a medley of English folk songs arranged by John Rutter. In his CD notes for the Collegium Records’ recording of these arrangements Rutter comments that ‘for children growing up in post war England as I did, traditional songs still formed a common musical currency... Among the numerous ‘As I went out one morning’s that fill folk song collections, you can find love songs of exquisite and fragile beauty such as ‘O waly, waly’ and ‘The sprig of thyme’, drinking songs of picaresque humour such as ‘The miller © vocalessence

of Dee’, lullabies of heart-easing tenderness such as ‘O can ye sew cushions?’. These songs brought me delight and pleasure then, and they still do now’. Alongside ‘A Sprig of Thyme’ this concert includes Vaughan Williams’ tribute to Sir Henry Wood, ‘Serenade to Music’ and Gospel Choruses arranged by Ken Burton, familiar to BBC Songs of Praise viewers. Join us in beautiful Barkway for a wander down a rustic memory lane, or to discover these melodies for the first time. Professional Stress-Busting for Business You don’t need me to tell you that being in business can be a stressful experience

being squeezed, prioritise the ‘must do’ actions. Anything that is not essential needs to be relegated to the bottom of the list, delegated or dropped completely.

Now you may think there’s nothing you can do, but good stress management is essentially about taking control where you can, and changing the way you react to what you can’t change. Here are some suggestions:

Share your feelings There’s a time for a stiff upper lip, but even if you can’t change circumstances, you may find that talking things through with someone else can be very cathartic.

You can’t control the uncontrollable Accept the things you can’t change – and move on. Rather than stressing over them, focus on the things you can control – such as the way you choose to react to these issues.

Look after No.1 Finally it’s important to have the resilience to deal with the unforeseen, and that means you need to look after yourself – so sensible diet, some form of regular exercise and plenty of sleep can also really help.

Focus on the positive When stress is getting you down, take a moment to reflect on all the things you appreciate in your life. This helps to keep things in perspective. Just say no Know your limits and stick to them. Whether in your personal or professional life, don’t say ‘Yes’ and take on more responsibility if you know you’ve already got too much on your plate. Do the ‘musts’ not the ‘shoulds’ Re-assess your to-do list and pick out what really needs to be done. Be selfish – if you’re

Finally, it’s good to know that even tackling just one of these suggestions might make a positive difference to how you feel. Now doesn’t that feel better? julian@julianberry.co.uk
