This month it’s all about art of all kinds. Of course September is the month of the Royston Arts Festival. Creative Royston do a fantastic job each year of pulling together this vibrant festival to showcase Royston and the surrounding villages at their creative best.
Next Deadline Friday 14th September
We also feature Herts Open Studios which is a celebration of local artists who open their work places to the curious public. If you haven’t visited any studios yet I can recommend it. You may get to see art works being created in front of your eyes and it is always fascinating. With the children heading back to school, or maybe just starting out look out for open days, tuition opportunities and the chance to learn new skills - there is plenty for adults too!

Out & About Royston Arts Festival 2018! The last weekend in September sees the return of Royston Arts Festival, and the Creative Royston committee is proud to unveil the full programme of events, which this year is themed around Voyages of Discovery
In the run-up to the festival, the Voyages Film Festival is going on tour, pairing films with unique guest speakers at new venues in Royston’s surrounding villages. You can catch Voyages of the Southern Sun in Fowlmere Village Hall on Thursday 20th, Hidden Figures at Barley Townhouse on Monday 24th and 8 Mile at Steeple Morden Village Hall on Thursday 27th. Returning for its third year, Royston MusicFest ‘18 has moved to Sunday 23rd, the weekend before the main festival, in order to accommodate even more music! All shows are completely FREE. All afternoon, performers will entertain at eight venues around Royston and the evening will
culminate with a gala concert at The Old Bull Inn at 7pm. With over twenty acts performing, there will be some old favourites as well as lots of exciting new music. Full details can be found in the MusicFest programme, and on the up-to-the-minute schedule at www. roystonmusicfest.uk. Or just follow your ears and come and hear for yourself!
For the Festival Weekend itself (Friday 28th – Sunday 30th) we have something for everyone! There will be showcases of local art and photography across town, and music from Cracked Voices, Dumisa Rumbidza Praise, Caxton Swing, as well as MusicFest Extra. There will be Bell Ringing demonstrations, Royston Town Band’s coffee morning and a singing workshop from Ladyblue Music. CADs will be staging the black comedy Ghost Writer, and there will be talks on subjects ranging from Rob Roy to art in the natural world. There are also activities for families with children including Toddler Tales at the library and craft activities at the museum.
Priory Memorial Gardens will be the venue for our Community Arts Event on Saturday afternoon, where you can try your hand at music, crafts and dance classes for all ages. Or simply come and enjoy the entertainment, bouncy castles, free face painting and henna tattoos, refreshments from around the world and art display by Paul Human. On Saturday evening, Creative Royston will be hosting writer, radio host and musician Andrew Mueller at Royston Library, which promises to be a fascinating trip from Backstage to Frontline. The festival culminates on Sunday evening with our Finale Concert at St John’s Parish Church, featuring Royston Town Band, Royston Choral Society, Royston Youth Choir and local schools. This year we are privileged to be joined by Großalmerode Musiczug and musicians from our twin towns in France and Spain.
Full details of all events, including ticketing and accessibility information are available in the Royston Arts Festival programme or at www.creativeroyston.org
MUSEUM MUSINGS: Voyages...
The Arts Festival theme of “Voyages of Discovery” gave me the perfect opportunity to uncover some of Royston’s residents’ own voyages.
• Reverand Stallybrass was involved with getting a new Sunday school built in the town in the late 1800s. That Sunday school in now the museum! He and his wife, Sarah, were also missionaries who went to Mongolia. They even translated the Bible into Mongolian.
• Jack Halstead, whose family ran the shop that is now Mica, went to France to fight during WWI. He kept a diary detailing his time there. • As for the objects in the museum, we’ve got things that have come from all over the world including a sword from India, Roman coins and a boomerang from Australia!
We’re looking forward to seeing the wonderful art work in our • Joseph Leete set up his own middle schools’ exhibition – who business in France in the 1850s. knows what voyages we’ll be taken He was highly respected by staff on. Pop along to the museum to and colleagues. His bust sits in check out the exhibition. Why not the museum. share your own stories of voyages and discoveries too? • The many women who met and married American GIs after WWII www.roystonmuseum.org.uk moving to America – what a voyage to make! A whole new way of life to discover. • Dr Gladys ProudlockDunbar who spent her early life in Myanmar (previously Burma) before training as a doctor in London and then moving to Royston in 1938.

At last a few showers, is there such a thing as the correct rain? Well yes - the gentle downpours in mid August were beneficial. This has helped the grasses to recover slowly and remove any potential fire hazard. The natural life-cycle of grasses sees the stems die and go brown as their seed ripens. The dry weather adds a stress which can hurry this process up. It is, however, completely natural for the Heath to go brown, just not necessarily so early in the season. There could be a knock-on effect in availability of seed food for birds later in the season: seeds may be smaller and may drop sooner. It’s been a fabulous year for butterflies so far on the Heath - with good showings of Chalkhill Blues,
Dark Green Fritillaries, Marbled Whites and many more. A few dedicated volunteers conduct regular butterfly surveys on the Heath and we await their results with interest. A volunteer group conducted Ragwort pulling over the summer, as agreed with Natural England. We did not aim to eradicate it because it is not without its ecological benefits and we didn’t remove those that were already being eaten by caterpillars. Please remember, it is an offence for anyone to pick or uproot any plant on Therfield Heath unless prior agreement is obtained from Natural England. September should see a cut and collect on Lankester Hill as the second best option to grazing, as discussed with Natural England. If you are interested in volunteering on Therfield Heath, please contact Cynthia. c.combe@therfieldheath.org.uk Enquiries maybe directed to clerk@therfieldheath.org.uk www.therfieldheath.org.uk

In between, churches, schools and charities all make up teams of six swimmers, who are challenged to swim as many lengths of the Leisure Centre pool as they can in an hour.
More than £5,000 was raised in one recent year. Sponsorship money is split between each team’s selected charity and Rotary’s charitable choice – this year it will be Stand-by-me Bereavement Support. Town & Country
We welcome our ur new w
r ner
We are pleased to announce that local entrepreneur, Mark Hagger has now joined the prestigious company, ‘Abode Town & Country’. With a wealth of business knowledge & businesses’ all over the world, we are excited for what our new partnership will bring to the company’s bright future. “I am very impressed by what the team at Abode Town & Country have achieved in their first year and I am extremely honoured to now become a part of it.” Mark was born and raised in Royston and has always been into his sports and local teams. He grew up in the race horse industry where he was a local stable boy as a teenager, before he began his journey to become a successful entrepreneur in the engineering industry. Mark later became part of ‘Royston Table Tennis Club’ and was also a boxer for Royston ABA for four years at the Royston British Legion club. Mark now enjoys taking part in the more relaxing sports such as fishing and golf, which he enjoys doing with his fifteen year old son, Morgan and friends. Mark has had many business successes, with his proudest being that he built his own company, CVMSL, from scratch. Years later the company then merged with another local competitor to form the new company, 1G Dynamics, which is now a thriving worldwide company. Mark is looking forward to expanding his business knowledge and joining partnership with his brother Graham in the property industry.
Abode Town & Country’s new partner, Mark Hagger.
Apart from relocating to America for work three times, Mark has worked and lived in Royston for most of his life and is passionate about Royston and supporting the local town and shops which includes eating from his favourite takeaway “Mughal Kitchen” (He considers himself an Indian connoisseur!) and of course shopping at “La Bella Vita” which belongs to his fiancé, who is keeping them both busy with their wedding plans for next year! Mark’s passion for the town is what drew him to join the team at Abode and we are all really excited to have him as part of the team!
“My vision for Abode Town & Country is to be the best and most successful local Estate Agent in the area. I would like to see the company branch out further afield and for more of our offices to open, providing jobs for the local community but most of all, the aim is to continue to offer a friendly, honest and reliable service.”

Where are your old deeds? In recent years the Land Registry has superseded the necessity of keeping old deeds to properties. However, a Working Party of Royston and District Local History Society are trying to track them down before important historical information is lost forever.
The deeds may be privately held or deposited for safety with a solicitor. The documents often contain information of previous owners and of neighbouring buildings which can seldom or never be found anywhere else.
The History Society meets in The Heritage Hall, Town Hall from October to April, on the first Thursday of the month at 8pm Admission is free to members and £2 for visitors. All are welcome.
“We will soon be approaching property owners in Royston with a view to discovering where their title deeds are kept with a view of saving them for posterity,” says the Society’s Chairman Neville Chuck.

News from your Town Council - September 2018 Annual Report for the Financial Year 2017-2018 Royston Town Council published its Annual Report in June 2018, copies of which are available from the Town Hall Offices or it can be viewed online at www.roystontowncouncil.gov.uk. There are three tiers of local government in Royston: Town, District and County. Details of what each council is responsible for can be found on the Town Council’s website. The Town Council is responsible for the Town Hall, Market Hill Rooms, Royston War Memorial, Royston Cave, Green Walk and Stile Plantations, Green Street allotments, Royston Museum, the market and the Market Place and Angel Pavement car parks. The Council also organises events for all sections of the community; highlights this year included the May Fayre and Silver Sunday.

The Full Council and principal committee meetings are open to all members of the public and press. At the beginning of each meeting time is set aside to allow members of the public to make representation to the various committees about items on the agenda. Copies of the agendas are posted on the Town Hall notice board and web site. A calendar detailing the meetings for the coming year is also available on the web site. An achievement this year was the Royston and District Museum gaining full accreditation from the Arts Council, which signifies that it meets the standards of running a museum, management, collection care and public services. Thanks go to the dedicated staff and volunteers for this. There has been no increase in the Royston Town Council part of the Council Tax for the year 2018-19 and the Band ‘D’ charge remains the same at £42.53 per household.
In recognition of her public service as a local councillor and as Mayor last year, our very own Cllr Vera Swallow was selected to attend the May Garden Party in the grounds of Buckingham Palace. These are held as a way for the Queen to speak to people from all walks of life and who have made a positive impact in their community. The party began at 4 pm when members of the Royal Family gathered on the West Terrace for the National Anthem. The Band of the Household Cavalry and the Band of Royal Logistics Corps entertained the guests.

Naturally Royston’s Front Garden Competition Results 2018 Royston's residents, along with the Naturally Royston Committee, were invited to nominate a neighbour, friend or relative for this year’s front garden competition. The winning garden entrant was Martin Dawson who received the 1st prize of £100. His garden is a colourful and eye-catching display of diverse planting and it was evident that Mr Dawson had worked very hard on its maintenance. The second place prize of £50 went to Sue Keenan, whose compact but colourful garden makes quite an impact on the street and makes good use of limited space.
Third place and prize of £25 went to Josephine Cook, who has a well maintained and very colourful container garden, which brightens up the whole area. The gardens were judged on 10 July after a very challenging time for gardeners because of the hot and dry weather; however, the top three gardens had all been cared for exceptionally well, despite the difficulties. Typically, on the day of some of the photographs, there was heavy rain and Mrs Cook said that at least she didn’t have to water all the pots that night! The certificates and cheques were presented by the Mayor, Cllr Iain Leggett. Very sadly, and unbeknown to the judges at the time, all three of our winners had quite recently lost their spouses and each garden had been created with their loved ones in mind. This year’s competition has certainly been a very special one. The Naturally Royston team would like to thank everyone who entered or nominated a garden.
A Cemetery for Royston In 2012, when it was known that the existing cemeteries in Royston were getting full and burials would only be available at Wilbury Hills Cemetery in Letchworth, Royston Town Council held a public consultation, which resulted in a mandate to find a suitable site for a new Royston Cemetery. Over the years the Town Council has investigated more than 20 sites around Royston. These included many generous offers from prominent local landowners, but unfortunately, for a variety of reasons, no sites were suitable. Our active search for a site has now come to an end. We will of course consider any opportunities that come up in the future.

sing all the way through?” Musicals are not his favourite.
Steve and Mary Griffiths are skilled manufacturers of quality bespoke curtains and blinds. They have been making curtains for a well-known partnership and local people for almost 20 years. They are also experts in soft furnishing design.
What is your favourite way to spend a Saturday? Mostly we work, but when we do get time out, we like cycling, walking the mutts Milly & Tilly and, when we can, spending time with family and our grandson Dylan. Steve also has a man shed with trains in it...
Where do you live? Kneesworth – Originally we hailed from Worcester and Warwickshire but now Hertfordshire is our home and we love it here. What’s your favourite local place to eat? We love Yuva Restaurant in Kneesworth. It’s just round the corner from us and serves the most amazing food . We do walk there but sometimes could do with a Taxi home! What is your favourite local annual event? The Cambridge Show and the Great Gransden shows are always on our list. Great atmosphere with lots to do, and lovely food stalls What was the last film you watched together? Mmm tough one that. I watch them but Steve falls asleep, and then we have to rewind them and watch the end . The best one we watched was Frozen when Steve asked after 5 minutes “Are they going to
What do you love about your work? The variety is great and meeting wonderful people from all walks of life. Also being able to produce our own bespoke products in our own workroom, run brilliantly by Jenny our Workroom manager. Charlene, Steve’s daughter and my wonderful step daughter, is keeping us busy with her Leicester branch of New Dawn, and we get to spend time with her when we are fitting for her so feel very lucky. What are you looking forward to most this September? Mary: I’m off to Burghley Horse trials with the girls! Steve: Perhaps a sneaky break away somewhere... What’s top of your Bucket List? Mary: To one day go to Colorado and spend time on a ranch . I ticked one off this year when Charlene and I rode on the
beach in Cornwall and that was amazing! Steve: To see the Grand Canyon – that’s it! Who do you most admire? Mary: Steve would love me to say him! There are so many people who face so many things on a daily basis and I admire them for their courage. Also my mum who is an amazing lady at 85 – I know she won’t mind me saying that. Steve: Obviously the wife! New Dawn Blinds 01763 243 894 info@newdawnblinds.co.uk www.newdawnblinds.co.uk

We are a family run business owned by Mary and Steve Griffiths. We have both worked in the local curtain and blind industry for over 30 years. Steve started as a fitter in Melbourn in 1984 and Mary as a fabric cutter in Potton in 1987. We wanted to focus on giving highquality customer service which we are both passionate about and so opened our own business ten years later. In 2014 we were delighted to buy the local business New Dawn.

Stepping out with Carers ‘Stepping out with Carers’ has come to Hertfordshire. They offer a series of scenic, sociable, entertaining walks in some of Herts’ greatest beauty spots, created especially for carers and the people they care for.
– a brisker longer walk around 3 miles and a shorter walk, up to a mile, on easy terrain suitable for anyone in a wheelchair or with mobility issues. Following the expeditions, all walkers come together for a convivial and communal lunch.
The multi award-winning Fox & Duck
The walks are delivered by The Ramblers in association with Carer Support Organisations and are funded by the National Lottery through Sport England. They are supported by Herts County Council and local carer organisations including Crossroads. The Sports Minister, Tracy Crouch, who joined a walk in July said “It’s a great scheme combining physical activity with respite and connectivity & much loved by participants”.
The next walk is on Thursday 13th September at St Paul’s Walden Bury, Hitchin, exploring the garden and grounds and has been sponsored by Margaret House Residential and Dementia Care Home in Barley, who are proud to support the life-enhancing, health-promoting, fun-inducing value of walking and talking with new friends.
The current landlords began their tenure in October 2012 and have gone from strength to strength since. In 2015 the team scooped its first award for best service in the county in the Hertfordshire Food and Drink awards. In 2016 and 2017 they were voted PUB OF YEAR and this year the Fox and Duck were runner up in the competition, not bad for a village pub in the small but quaint village of Therfield! It has established itself with both those looking for a pint of real ale as well as a delicious, a la carte meal, the Fox and Duck is quickly becoming one of the most popular gastro pubs in Hertfordshire.

British Raj
British Raj - Royston’s original Indian restaurant - was established by Nazir Choudhury in 1976. A charming host & veteran restaurateur, Mr. Choudhury gave Royston its first experience of high quality British-Bangladeshi curry & tandoori cooking. The restaurant went from strength to strength, collecting many national accolades across the years and was highly regarded as the ‘best Indo-Bangladeshi restaurant in East Anglia’. Due to ill health, Mr. Choudhury
retired after over 4 decades in the hospitality industry; subsequently, the British Raj sadly ended in 2004. However, the spirit of the British Raj never ceased. Within the Choudhury family, there has always been a yearning to revive the Raj and bring back to Royston an unparalleled level of the very best Indian cuisine. It is with pleasure, we re-launch this award winning institute - as an exclusive takeaway & delivery operation.

Making your own jam
James Day, Head Chef at the award-winning Belle Freehouse in Bassingbourn gives his tips for an unusual jam. The ingredients you will need are as follows: 450g Melon 450g Caster Sugar 4 tbsp Lemon Juice This recipe is for a melon jam - a lovely reminder of the summer in the months to come. First of all halve the melon and remove the skin and seeds so you only have the flesh remaining. Dice this into approximately 1.5 cm dice to allow for even cooking. Place the melon into a thick based pan (or a preserving pan if you have one) with half the lemon juice and cook down to a pulp. Using a potato masher or wooden spoon, squash the fruit to a puree. At this stage add the remaining lemon juice and the sugar, stirring over a low heat until the sugar has dissolved. Increase the heat and boil until the setting temperature of 105 degrees is reached. If you haven’t got a sugar thermometer, place a teaspoon of jam on a cold saucer - if it forms a skin as it cools then the setting temperature has been reached. Place your jam into a sterilised jar, seal and allow to cool. For an extra bit of flavour you can add a tablespoon of rum to every 450g of sugar. This is to be stirred in just before setting point is reached. The Belle Freehouse and Restaurant North End, Bassingbourn, SG8 5NZ www.thebellefreehouse.co.uk 01763 250921

A few workplace tips to help increase daily activity: Park at the end of the car park; Take the stairs; Go for a walk at lunchtime. The last one will help relieve stress and stop you munching on cookies in the canteen.

What will you do when they go back to school? We are looking for accountants to join us from September. Working part-time from our office in Royston on childcare friendly hours. Competitive pro rata salary offered. Practice experience is preferable but not essential.
• Attire and clothing: • Body Language: • Attitude and behaviour: • Conversation and language: Dress the part. Some will say it is wrong to judge, but it is human nature to form instant impressions. This doesn’t mean you need to be flashy, just dress with respect – you never know who you’re going to meet. Your appearance should say to customers, ‘you can trust me’ not, ‘look at me’. Look the part. It’s important that your body language is also open and engaging. Smile and say hello to people, make eye contact when speaking, carry yourself with confidence. Act the part. You need to exhibit a positive attitude. You want to be confident but not cocky, polite but not smarmy, friendly but not annoying. And
remember – in business relationships, it’s not about you, it’s about the customer.. Communicate wisely. Conversations should not be about you, so listen – seek to understand before being understood. And don’t forget your social media profile – what do people see when they look at yours? Maybe rantings about old flames, Twitter spats with restaurants giving bad service? But enough about me… Does the way you look and behave give your customer complete confidence that you understand what they need, and that you can (and will) deliver it in the way they want? What do you think? julian@julianberry.co.uk
