Summer might seem a distant memory now, but we’ve been lucky enough to enjoy plenty of bright stunning days which we hope will continue as we head into the Autumn, it’s the perfect time to get outside and explore our local area. Our cover this month is ‘Red Panda’ which was created by Megan Wilson as part of Royston Arts Society’s Young Artist Awards. Royston Rugby Club

the coveted ‘men’s team of the year award’ at the National Rugby awards in August.

There has never been a better time than 2018 to be a member of Royston Rugby Club.

With both Mens and Women’s 1st XV squads being promoted at the end of the 2017/18 season, touch producing regional representation and mini and youth sides ever on the increase it’s little wonder the club were finalists at the National Rugby awards for Club of the Year. The club is keen on inclusion and a family/community atmosphere. This was the focus of a community day back in July when the club hosted a rugby day camp for free in the summer holidays which saw 100 local children attend to be coached by England player and men’s coach Hannah Gallagher.

Mini and Youth train on Sunday mornings from 9:30, girls rugby (u9s and above) train Wednesday night’s 6:30-7:30pm. Touch Rugby (minimal contact) is Wednesday’s 7.30-9pm. Adult rugby runs Tuesdays and Thursdays with Men’s training 7.30-9pm and Women 7-8pm

RSPB Fowlmere

Loving Local Living prey can sometimes spend time on the reserve in winter, and zoom over the fen or adjacent fields in search of prey at this time of year.

RSPB Fowlmere is a small nature reserve with reedbeds and pools, forming a refreshing natural oasis in the agricultural landscape of south Cambridgeshire. Formed of once extensive watercress beds, the site is now a Reserve warden Beth haven for wetland and woodland wildlife. The River Shep, a natural chalk stream runs through the reserve and brown trout can often be spotted in the clear waters, while water voles, and very occasionally, otters are seen. The increasingly scarce turtle dove is a summer visitor and Fowlmere is one of the most reliable locations in Cambridgeshire to hear the soft purring of its call. Barn owls breed here in special nest boxes and can often be seen roosting outside their box near the reedbed hide, at times even during the daytime. A trail which has boardwalks in several area loops through the reserve, giving access to the three hides, including the raised reedbed hide, which gives excellent views over the mere and reedbeds. Water rails, kingfishers and various ducks use the mere, while hobbies and marsh harriers can be seen in the summer. Wading birds such as lapwing, redshank, common and green sandpipers and sometimes scarcer birds such as wood sandpiper, jack snipe and common snipe pop in to feed and rest on the mere’s muddy, reedy margins. Fowlmere is also a great place to spot dragonflies, with up to seventeen species seen here, while grass snakes are sometimes seen in the pools or beside the trails. In autumn and winter, large flocks of thrushes from Scandinavia arrive and forage on the berry bushes. Merlins, our smallest bird of

Aucott manages a team of dedicated volunteers, managing the habitat, clearing trails and scrub and keeping the site in top shape for both nature and people. If you haven’t visited before, come along and explore and discover this wonderful RSPB reserve soon! Fowlmere reserve is open every day of the week and friendly and informative volunteers are on duty in the reception hut most weekends. A new hut, funded from a collection by his wife in memory of the late Dr Paul Walsh, is installed and will soon replace the old hut that has been on site since over twenty years ago (and it was second hand then!) A new car park machine has been installed this summer and entry is included in the carparking fee, £2 a car for non-members. Dogs and cycles are not permitted on the reserve. The reserve was originally bought by the RSPB Young Ornithologists Group (now the Wildlife Explorers) in 1977. An active Wildlife Explorers group, The Fowlmere Bullfinches, meet here once a month, for children to discover nature with an enthusiastic team. Contact 01279 777833 for more information.

Local budding artists are continuing their weekly drop-in sessions in the refurbished Sandon Village Hall. New members are always welcome even if regular attendance is not possible. Starting again on 7th September and continuing until 14th December. Join for only £5 to cover insurance and commitment to the group. There will be a fee of £10 per morning when attending. These sessions are designed to appeal to virtual beginners through to more experienced artists. Why sit at home always painting on your own? Be motivated and learn some new techniques in a calm and friendly atmosphere. The hall is opposite the village church; it is warm and has loads of free parking. Find us at SG9 0QU. During the term three local experienced artists, Rachel Haynes, Jane Davalle and

Mike Dobson will give demonstrations and individual tuition concentrating on drawing skills in pencil, charcoal and paint. Other members will give occasional demonstrations of their own short cuts and techniques. Painting will be in watercolour, pastels, ink and acrylic. The medium chosen is free choice, if you are fond of one stick to that - or try something new. Royston Arts Society Celebrates 40 years This year, the Royston Arts Society (RAS) is celebrating its 40th anniversary by nurturing the next generation of artists!

art in various mediums, skills and themes.

The Young Artists Awards were held for the first time this year, offering artists from 16-26 years old in SG8 a chance to win one of six fabulous prizes. The quality of art submitted was exceedingly high. So who won?

In the beginning this non-profit membership organisation, founded in 1979, met once a week for painting classes in Sylvia Jordan’s dining room. Things really started in 1978 though, when Edwin (Gary) Grimaldi retired and moved to Royston, only to discover there was no local art scene. Using his art exhibition experience, Gary advertised for like-minded people to help him set up Royston’s first local exhibition.

Kate Bieriezjanczuk’s “At Dawn” (pictured on The Listing Royston cover) won the Curwens Solicitors Young Artist of the Year Award - £100 + a solo exhibition in January 2019. Look out for it! Megan Wilson’s “Red Panda” (on The Listing Villages cover) won the Rotary Club of Royston’s Art Inspiration Award and a one year Tate Membership for her + guest. Chloe Alcock’s “Unpleasant Discoveries” won the Art Supplies Award, a £100 art hamper from Great Art, and Creative Royston’s £50 prize for the best ‘Voyages of Discovery’ themed painting. Ash Moorley’s “Stargazer” won The Old School Studio Art Tutorial Award and a £75 voucher towards the art workshop of her choice. Annabel McCraith’s “Through the Looking Glass” won the Artists & Illustrators Art Information Award - a one year subscription to this top art publication. The winning artworks were on show at the annual RAS Autumn Exhibition. This is the largest, most diverse art exhibition in Royston’s creative calendar, showcasing

Today, the RAS has a membership of roughly 100, hosts nine art demonstrations every year, two painting sessions per month, an ongoing miniexhibition at Royston Library, and two larger annual exhibitions. On its 40th anniversary, the RAS is looking after the future of local art. Hosting Creative Royston’s Cover Art auction and awarding the winners of the Young Artist Awards on Preview Night are only some of the things the RAS does to maintain Royston’s thriving art scene. The Friends of Foxton will be holding their annual Art Exhibition again this year across the weekend of 17th-18th November

Bright and even blustery autumn days are the ideal time to explore the great outdoors. Whilst you’re out and about with your child, gather some fabulous autumn leaves, sticks, and conkers to create a beautiful collage. Collage art allows your child to practice fine motor skills such as sticking, cutting and glueing.

This month we welcomed Tingting He, a representative from Tiptree Jams. She gave an excellent talk about the company, which was founded by Arthur Charles Wilkin in 1885 when the first preserves were made. Tiptree grows their own fruit and select varieties from around the world. The farm is the size of 500 football pitches! At the farm they run tours and close by is the Jam Museum. We enjoyed the tasting session and at the end of the meeting members were able to purchase some of the products. Sledging on the heath in the snow everyone seems to come together in the snow and enjoy the hills of Royston.

Apart from Pinot Grigio?!....Sunshine, music, animals and my family and friends. Being outside generally makes me happy - being out with dogs and watching them play makes me very happy.

What has been the most valuable life lesson that you have learnt? For me it has to be that doing a job you love is more important than one of real financial gain. Material things have no real value, happiness does :-)

What do you love about your work?

Four people you would invite to dinner? Peter Andre (I know!) but I love his voice and he could sing for us, Robin Williams - I found him hilarious and loved his humour, Jamie Oliver could come and do the cooking and Noel Fitzpatrick (Supervet) because what he does is absolutely incredible.

Literally everything! I have never been so passionate about a job, working with animals full time is something I have always wanted to do. Taking tired dogs home knowing they have had a brilliant day is when I know I have done my job well. What can be better than spending your days with dogs, cats, rabbits, guinea pigs and even chickens?!! What is your favourite way to spend a Sunday? I often work on Sundays but I usually get a chance to watch my ten year old son play rugby. He plays for Royston Rugby club and I really enjoy watching him train or play matches. The rugby crowd are a nice bunch of people and the breakfast and coffee at the Heath is excellent, so even in the rain it makes it all worthwhile

What are you looking forward to most this October? We are going to spend a week in Sea Palling, Norfolk in October. Butterscotch Tart Hello my fellow foodies... and welcome to another bright and shiny edition of The Listing. This month dear reader I would like to mark the change in seasons with one of my favourite autumnal recipes. My Butterscotch tart is quick and simple and can be served in slices at grown up dinner parties, or cut into bitesized pieces to provide that sugar fix sometimes required with an afternoon cuppa. It can even be dressed up completely with food colouring, icing and a little imagination and you have your Halloween centrepiece.

but crimp away if that is your preference. As always dear reader, the choice is yours. Now blind bake your case at 190°c. I prefer to do this in two stages, the first with a layer of greaseproof paper and baking beans for approximately 15 mins and for the second stage I remove the beans and the paper and then egg wash the pastry and bake for 10-12 minutes. This I find, gives me the best results for cooking, colouring and glazing the pastry. When the pastry is completely cooked, remove from the oven and allow to cool completely.

Now we shall make the butterscotch filling. In a large pan melt the butter and sugar until the sugar has dissolved completely, we are aiming for a beautiful, silky smooth filling no lumps allowed! When you are happy that all the sugar is now in liquid form add all the So, let’s begin. You will need a 20cms or flour and beat vigorously for 2-3 minutes to 8” loose bottomed round tin and the oven cook out the starch granules. Next pop this heated to 190°C mixture into a blender, add the essences and milk gradually and continue to blend Butterscotch Tart until smooth. Pour this mixture carefully into the pastry mix and set aside to cool at room Pastry temperature for 30 minutes. Cut into the -250g Plain Flour desired sized pieces and decorate as you -125g Butter please- as you can tell I was feeling a little -2 Eggs from happy and healthy free running decadent when I last made this tart and a hens swirl of whipped cream and a sprinkling of grated chocolate were just what was -Splash of cold water needed! Enjoy with lashings of steaming tea -Pinch of salt and good company. I would love to see how you choose to decorate your tarts, feel free Filling to send in a picture to The Listing. -175g Butter -175g Caster sugar Next time, dear reader, I have a special -175g Plain flour bonfire treat of a recipe to share, which not only tastes delicious but is really good fun to -Pinch of salt make...but I won’t spoil the surprise! -1tsp vanilla essence -1tsp caramel essence Until next time, -100ml semi skimmed milk Let’s begin by making the pastry. Rub together the salt, butter and the flour to a sandy texture, then add one egg and a tiny splash of ice cold water and mix together to form a dough. Resist the temptation to overwork the mixing at this stage or you will make tough “cardboard” like pastry instead of the light “just held together” texture we are aiming for. Cling film and pop the pastry into the fridge for 30 minutes to cool and relax. When you are ready, roll out the pastry to a depth of 2-3mm and line the tin finishing the edges in your own preferred style. As you may be able to make out from the photo I chose the cleaner, straight finish 22

Hadham Brewery Hadham Brewing Company was established in 2015 in Little Hadham. William Compton, with over twenty years brewing experience, came on board as brewer in 2016. Glazed Creations is Five! Five years ago Pip and Christina sat painting together at a kitchen table fantasising about leaving veterinary careers and starting a pottery painting studio in Royston, a business plan cemented their resolve to bring a bit of creativity to Royston, 2 weeks later a course at a ceramic supply company confirmed projections should lead to a solvent business and 8 weeks later Glazed Creations opened. We were nervous about what the future would bring but excited for the new adventure.

The studio has given us so much more than we could have dreamed of. We have met many wonderful people, have seen children grow up from babies to starting school,

children who had birthday parties here turn into teenagers coming in to paint for a bit of quiet time whilst revising for their GCSEs, raised money for charities, had our eyes opened to the power of creativity as people battle against mental illness, and been involved in many community events. We like to think that we not only provide a fun way to pass a few hours, but also a chance to focus on being together … or alone! At Royston Library children are invited to bring along a favourite toy for our Soft Toy Sleepover. After a story session, they can tuck their toys into bed and leave them with us overnight. Then pop back the following day to collect them and find out what they have been up to! To continue my series of articles for 2018, Designing with Plants, I am going to look at working with what you’ve got when starting to develop your garden. It can be useful when moving to a new home to live with the garden for a year and observe what plants you get through the seasons. It is always a shame to throw plants away. Here are few things to think about: Existing boundary planting always needs looking at when you move to a new garden. We have a strong obsession with where our boundaries start and finish in this country and privacy from our neighbours. However there is no need for our boundaries to be lined with rows of conifers because we lack the imagination. Have a good look at what you have and whether it works. A pretty fence with climbing roses mixed with clematis can be very effective. Or for a striking more contemporary look, pleached trees can look great. Equally you may have a neglected collection of shrubs that provide good screening but require some regenerative pruning to regain control of their width and height. I love to use a mixture of evergreen and deciduous native shrubs that provide interest and encourage wildlife. Things such as Viburnum opulus, Euonymus europaeus and prunus spinosus to name just a few. So often I see the domineering leylandii hedge that is too tall and too wide. They are easy to plant and easy to neglect! Managed properly they are effective although never high on my list. If you really want a conifer why not try Thuja plicata, it is slower growing and produce a much finer hedge with pineapple scented foliage. Specimen plants within the garden should always be treasured. I often see cork screw hazels lost amongst a mixture of larger more vigorous shrubs. Bad pruning and wrong companion planting means that the impact of this specimen becomes lost. Specimen planting can also take the form of a focal point tree or shrub with architectural foliage or good autumn colour. When looking at a new garden design project for the first time I am always assessing the existing planting for so called “garden worthy plants!” I remember designing a garden in Cambridge around a particularly old specimen Cotoneaster lacteus and despite this being very restrictive for the design it made the most of a lovely specimen plant. Salvageable planting is always on my radar too when I am assessing a new design. If there is an opportunity to salvage plants that fit the style of the new garden design then take it. A good way is to dig a holding bed and move

salvageable perennials and smaller shrubs into shallow trenches and heel them in ready for reusing. This is best carried out in the dormant season. Most hardy perennials, grasses, bulbs, and smaller shrubs will happily move. It is also a great opportunity to divide larger perennial clumps to produce more plants! Plants in the wrong place offer another great opportunity for the keen eyed gardener. Look out too for shade lovers planted in the sunshine. They maybe just about tolerating life in the sun but are they really thriving? The classic example of this is the sunny herbaceous mixed plant border that may have started out life with all the best intentions but as the shrubs grow and shade out the perennials they will struggle to gain the light and water they need to thrive. Borrowed views are very often over looked if you excuse the pun! Specimen trees such as a copper beech in a neighbour’s garden can still be admired and appreciated from your side too. Consider also views of the wider landscape beyond your own. For more in depth plant advice or garden design help please get in touch

With autumn comes cold and rain and the likelihood that some paths will become muddy and slippery - especially on steeper slopes. The Friends of Therfield Heath are a new group who aim to assist in the conservation of Therfield Heath by the Conservators of Therfield Heath and Greens by raising funds, volunteering, and actively promoting the beauty and uniqueness of the heath. We hope to be able to provide a point of contact for the public for consulting on new initiatives by the Conservators, so if you have any feedback or ideas please join us! Halloween makeup guide Halloween is a fun time of year for those of us who love to play dress up. Last year I decided to go for a simple Halloween costume and makeup. The makeup was so simple to do that you can put it together in a matter of minutes.

All you need is some eyeshadow with red, pinks or purples and a darker lipliner, ideally a deep purple.

If you want to challenge yourself further try adding a scar through the eye. This may look daunting but I promise you it’s not! All I used was ripped tissue, cotton wool and eyelash glue. Using the eyelash glue I stuck the tissue and cotton wool in a line across my eye. Once dry I used a small eyeshadow brush with some brown and red around the edges.

First I took a red and brushed it under my eye starting with darker colour closer to the bottom of my eye and getting lighter as I went down. I found trial and error with colours was needed. Then I took the lip liner and created veins around my eye. After I used a glitter shadow and outlined the veins. For the top of my eye I did the same with a darker

Because I trained as a farm manager back in nineteen hundred and frozen to death, I see this time of year as the start of something new and exciting. As I drive to work, I see potatoes and onions are being lifted and the sugar beet won’t be long after that and now next year’s crops are being sown We used to say that a farmer’s income was dictated by the quality of his land, influenced by the vagaries of the weather – and he can’t change either of them! The bit we missed out was the farmer’s skill, and how well he negotiated the sale of his produce.

With the farmer, once the seed is in the ground, the maximum yield potential has been set – his role from that point is to prevent external influences from reducing it too far: pests, diseases and so on. Other industries are luckier. Similarly, our profits are governed by the quality of our staff and raw materials and the quality of our management.
