everyone needs a bed! “Come on, everyone needs a bed!” Back in 2008, my husband Ady said these words to me as he began preparing for a new venture. I rolled my eyes and walked away. With sheer determination and an immense amount of hard work LC Furniture was created. With two young children, working part time in a school and studying part time to obtain a degree, I supported my husband as much as I could, with his new business idea. “Come on, you can sell a bed!”

Ten years later, Ady said these words to me and I decided I needed a change from teaching and began working in the family business. I realised that I really enjoyed the interaction with customers and, actually, I can sell a bed!

That was when we decided to open The Home Corner. Pulling in favourites from the Watford and Stevenage Store, I also added in luxury cushions and bedding along with lamps, vases and clocks - all the things that complement the ‘necessary’ furniture, turning a house into a home. At the same time, Ady was also expanding and opened another branch in Letchworth, taking over from Martins on Leys Avenue, which had been established for over 80 years. All our stores now supply furniture and flooring for the whole house, accompanied by a fantastic delivery team and our own in-house fitters. This year, 11th of November falls on Remembrance Sunday itself, marking one hundred years to the day since the guns fell silent on the eleventh hour, of the eleventh day, of the eleventh month of 1918, bringing the First World War to an end. We have featured a number of Remembrance events that are taking place in Royston and villages on page 5 and within our What’s On pages.

Remembrance In Royston

This year Armistice Day falls on Remembrance Sunday, the 11th November 2018. It will be one hundred years to the day since the guns fell silent on the eleventh hour, of the eleventh day, of the eleventh month of 1918, bringing the First World War to an end. It was supposed to be the war to end all wars.

This year to commemorate this anniversary I have collaborated with the Royston based group, “What Royston Did” to bring their project to the town’s war memorial in the form of display panels which will flank the newly restored tablets on the War Memorial. The panels will include pictures and information about each of those named on the memorial; this will include those from not only the First World War but also those from the Second World War, and will enable those who visit the memorial to learn a little more about those who died in the two World Wars, for whom Royston was home. The symbol of Remembrance, the Poppy, originates from the battlefields of the First World War; as was written in the poem “In Flanders Fields” by John McCrae;

Eighth USAAF; 920 men lost their lives, 123 were missing in action and 959 were captured. We will remember their courage and sacrifice:

So as we gather on Sunday 11th November to remember all those who have given their lives in war, let us also remember those veterans and their families among us today whose lives have been forever changed by their service. We remember the dead but don’t forget the living.

Remembrance In BAssingbourn To mark this special day, our commemoration will have a particular focus on remembering the soldiers from this village killed in action during WWI and the Armistice declared 100yrs ago. The fallen in WWII and conflicts since 1945 will also be commemorated. Bassingbourn Ringers will start the commemoration at 10am with a 30 min ring of the half-muffled Parish Church tower bells. Parish Councillors, students from the Village College, Primary School, Air Training Corps, the Brownies and Royal British Legion will be represented and all will gather at the War Memorial. The Act of Remembrance led by Revd Dr Caroline Yandell will commence at 10.45am accompanied by a solemn tolling of a single half-muffled tower bell. The service will address the ravages of the war and the human tragedy of so many lost lives. the War Memorial wall. As the 11th Hour approaches The Exhortation will be declared for us all – We will remember them. At the first stroke of 11o’clock, General Salute and Last Post bugle call will signal The two Minutes Silence. The service at the War Memorial will close with a special remembrance prayer. A traditional Remembrance Service will then follow in the Parish Church of St Peter and St Paul. At the close of the Service the Village Band will perform a medley of WWI Songs which were very popular in 1914/18 and which have remained so for many of us since. After the church service, a peal of the Church tower bells will ring out un-muffled in celebration to mark and reflect the joy that echoed around the whole world 100 years ago on 11th November 1918.

Chrishall Archive Want to find out about your family history? Chrishall Archive is housed in the Pavilion on Jigneys Playing Field in the centre of the village of Chrishall. One of the largest collections we have today is the Chrishall Scrapbook which was started in the 1950s by Irene Cranwell and the Chrishall WI group. For a while Chrishall history lay protected until a re-organisation of community spaces in the village brought up the possibility of making the sports pavilion into a multi-purpose space. This Autumn, we are commemorating World War I and its impact on the village in “Chrishall Remembers”. There will be an Irene Cranwell Memorial Talk on Wednesday 7th November, 8pm in the Village Hall. The Archive at the Pavilion will be having a special opening on Remembrance Sunday, 11 am – 3 pm.

Spotlight On... Melbourn Dynamos

Founded in 2003 Melbourn Dynamos FC is a thriving community based football club which aspires to offer boys and girls the opportunity to play regular football regardless of their experience or ability from the age of three. MDFC was awarded Charter Standard status in 2009 and all of our coaches are DBS checked and qualified to a minimum Level 1. This season we currently have more than 200 players in 16 teams at the Club and this includes our youngest players - the Dynamites. There are both mixed and girls only sessions for players between 3 – 6 years each Saturday morning. We regularly host tournaments on behalf of the Royston Crow Youth Football League and these raise funds for our Club and our nominated charity, Tom’s Trust www.tomstrust.org.uk. We are a very successful club which works closely with all our partners, especially Melbourn Village College (MVC) and the Parish Council. MDFC is committed in supporting the health and wellbeing of the whole community and we are very pleased to announce that, in partnership with MVC and working closely alongside Cambridgeshire FA and the Football Foundation, we are at the forefront of striving to achieve the installation of a full size astro turf facility at MVC. Initial discussions have been very positive and the next step is to evidence the use of the facility by 42 teams.

I know that it makes my family smile as walking was never my “thing”; but as my 40s hit, so did my love of grown up pursuits. Two years ago I completed a 54k walking challenge on the South Downs, so got to experience many great local training walks with our fabulous #TeamCerysD walking group - and made lifelong friends along the way. One of my favourites has to be the Abington Piggots loop - you can pick up the footpath at Ivy Farm, Royston (towards McDonald’s), and walk across the fields until you reach the Stret in Litlington. From there, head towards Morden Green in Steeple Morden, then out past Cheyney Bury until you hit one of the footpaths towards Abington Piggots. There are then paths onto Bassingbourn and back to Royston, so it’s easy to do a circular route with refreshment stops along the way!

CReative royston says THANk You!

The Creative Royston committee would like to say a huge ‘thank you’ to everyone who supported this year’s Royston Arts Festival. We were truly blown away by the range of local talent on display and that over 4,000 people came to enjoy the weekend with us. Tied together by the theme of ‘Voyages of Discovery’, events were varied and spectacular, with music, theatre, exhibitions, film, dance and workshops across Royston. The sun came out on Saturday afternoon for a bumper Community Arts Event in Priory Memorial Gardens, and the festival finished with an extra special Finale Concert at Royston Parish Church, featuring local and international musicians from our twin towns. It was a real joy to see so many happy faces, enjoying a great celebration of the arts in Royston!

A fantastic institution The Melbourn Hub has not only become the centre of Community Life in the village, but now serves as a venue across several communities in South Cambs, hosting special functions, quiz evenings, art exhibitions, musical, seasonal events, and a host of other activities. It also has meeting rooms for businesses or clubs to hire. Apart from the full time staff the many volunteers are the life blood of the venue, and we are now recruiting! A little of your time can make a big difference to our village, We welcome volunteers for a wide range of opportunities, including the cafe, and library. NEWS FROM The ConservatorS As we move into the winter, we expect to see numbers of assorted Thrushes using Therfield Heath. Flocks of Redwings and Fieldfares will start appearing. These migrants come in search of things like worms and insects as well as berries and fruit. On the ground, the Fieldfares are visibly larger than the Redwings and have obviously grey heads. In flight, Fieldfares have a pale grey rump and the Redwings have red patches under their wings. Fieldfares in particular have very distinctive â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;chak-chakâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; type calls. Another thrush that will usually be seen in small flocks is the Mistle Thrush. They are larger than the others and paler in colour. They have a rattling call in flight. With November comes Bonfire Night and we respectfully ask that no fires are lit nor fireworks let loose on Therfield Heath as it is against the Bye Laws. The Long Barrow is situated on the edge of

the 17th fairway near the chair on top of the hill as you walk away from the Heath Sports Club. Here In mid-November, there is due to be an archaeological survey by a team from the University of Leicester, using a variety of geophysical techniques.The barrow on Therfield Heath has been damaged by two partial excavations â&#x20AC;&#x201C; in 1855 and 1935. Modern techniques are rather less intrusive. The long barrow is protected by the Ancient Monuments and Archaeological Areas Act (1979), as are the later round barrow burial mounds seen on Therfield Heath.

The memory café will celebrate its first year anniversary on November 12th. It meets every second Monday in the month at 10am at the Barn in Upper King Street. As well as providing entertainment for our guests with memory problems it is also a time for their carers to relax. Attendance is free, including refreshments, so please just turn up. The wonderful Youth Speaks, in which youngsters are given the opportunity to present on a subject of their choosing, will be held in November at Studlands Rise (year 4) and Greneway (years 5 to 8). This helps our youngsters to develop their confidence and verbal skills. Our November walk will be from Ickworth House on Sunday 11th November, and will have options of a 2 or 6 mile walk. The venue for lunch has yet to be chosen.

WI PM Our activities are many and varied in order to appeal to a wide range of interests. At our October meeting we wore something pink to support Cancer Charities. We are delighted to say our Craft Group has won the National Trust Wimpole Estate Scarecrow Competition for the second year running with Clea Waters, a stunning mermaid, promoting the WI resolution against plastic waste. You might just catch her her in Royston Library!

This month we have focused on our favourite walks. As a team we love to get outdoors, and autumn is the perfect time to wrap up and explore the footpaths around Royston and beyond.

One of the best things about walking - alongside the fresh air, mental and physical benefits of exercise and appreciating the seasons and the scenery - is that you can stop along at some great pubs for a coffee or a pint along the way. We are lucky to have a number of very good village pubs who will offer you a warm welcome and good food, so do support them. Ordnance Survey maps and apps are the best tools for

Cinder Toffee Hello my fellow foodies... and welcome to another bright and shiny edition of The Listing. As the fallen leaves begin to pile up my thoughts turn to bonfires and fireworks and all the big social occasions associated with this time of year. This month I would like to share with you a really simple yet versatile recipe... Cinder Toffee or some people may know it as Honeycomb. It is great fun to make and there is a large element of kitchen theatrics if you happen to have company when you cook! The secret to this recipe is to have all your ingredients weighed out and your equipment lined up and ready to go as this is a little like a science experiment...there’s no stopping it once it’s started! Once you have made your Cinder Toffee you can just break it up, pop it in a box and hand it round at Bonfire Night, or you can drizzle it with dark chocolate and serve the sugary shards at the end of a meal along side rich, strong coffee. It is delicious, crushed up and mixed through

ice cream and it is also amazing crushed into small lumps and sprinkled on top of cheese cake or mousse, the possibilities are limited only by your imagination!! Cinder Toffee 200g Castor sugar 5tbsp Golden Syrup 2tsp bicarbonate of soda You will also need a 20cm square deep sided tin greased with butter and lined with baking parchment and a deep saucepan and a long handled mixing spoon as the mixture bubbles three times it’s original height when the bicarbonate is added. Let’s begin by melting the sugar and the syrup in the saucepan. Now turn up the heat and bring the mixture to the boil. Continue to boil until it is dark Amber in colour. Turn off the heat and immediately, but carefully, (this is boiling sugar after all!) add the bicarbonate of soda, initially it will bubble up like lava erupting from a volcano but stir well until all the powder is dispersed and while the mixture is still fizzing and foaming, pour it into the prepared tin. Leave this for at least an hour at room temperature, then when you are ready simply lift out the paper and cut, snap or smash into the size pieces you need. This will keep in an air tight container for approximately a week, but don’t be tempted to store this in the fridge as it will just go soft and sticky. Royston Townswomen Guild Ian Burton gave us a talk on the history of Papworth Village and Hospital, now a Grade II listed building, was built in early 1800s by the Cheere family but when the family died there were no heirs to inherit. The Estate was sold to Sir James Musker. Men returning from World War I required specialist care and Papworth Hall was ideally located. The Army established an isolation hospital there, known as The Cambridgeshire Tuberculosis Colony. Later, thanks to a local benefactor a new village was built to aid patients’ recovery and allow families to live close. Since the 1950s Papworth Hospital has led the way in developing heart and lung surgery. Now, having outgrown its present site, the hospital is to move to a specially built ‘state of the art’ building at the Cambridge Biomedical Campus alongside Addenbrooke’s.

Garden Focus... Garden Styles Melbourn garden designer, Richard Arnott

To continue my series of articles for 2018, designing with plants, this month I am going to look at tree shape and form in the autumn and winter sky. Late autumn and winter are months of dramatic skies and the incorporation of interesting tree forms can really add interest in the garden when other plants have finished their season of interest. Here a few things to think about when appreciating tree form in the garden and how to use it to your advantage. Multi stem form is one of my favourite ways of getting a tree into a smaller garden. As the name suggests it is a tree with multiple stems rather than the traditional single stem. I love to use Amelanchier lamarckii or Prunus serrula as multi stems. The Amelanchier has awesome autumn colour, great structure with its multiple stems and pretty white blossom in late spring. In contrast the Prunus is primarilary grown for its stem structure and mahonony smooth, slightly peeling bark. Often a stalwart of a winter interest border but great in a mixed border too. Try to position multi stems where you can look up through them to the sky in the winter months when other planting has died back. Talking of bark colour it is always worth considering a multi stem birch too such as Betula utilis var. Jacquemontii. The winter walk at Anglesey Abbey is a stunning example of en masse birch planting. Pleached or lollipop forms make a striking shape to contrast with other plant forms. I love to use pleached hornbeam with flouncy flowering grasses and hardy perennials beneath to enclose space in a more gentle way. So far I have discussed deciduous trees, but well placed evergreen lollipop trees have become very popular in garden design. Repetition of the Japanese tree privet Ligustrum japonicum or the Bay laurel Laurus nobilis make great evergreen oval shapes that contrast well with the horizontal lines of a well clipped pleached hedge. Fastigiate or columnar shaped trees look great when horizontal space is limited. I am a big fan of using fastigiate beech Fagus sylvatica Dawyck or its purple relative Fagus sylvatica Dawyck Purple. Fastigiate Hornbeams make good avenue trees, Carpinus betulus Fastigiata Frans Fontaine or the traditional Carpinus betulus Fastigiata work well. For a vertical evergreen statement the coulumnar form of Juniperus scopulorum Blue arrow looks great lining a meandering path. Pyrus calleryana Chanticleer is an ornamental pear that has a columnar shape, pretty spring blossom and excellent autumn colour. It is also unusual for a deciduous tree because it is one of the first to

come into leaf and the last to drop its leaf. This has earnt it the reputation of a good screening tree. Weeping forms of tree look striking on a winter sky line too. I like to use the willow leaved pear Pyrus salicifolia Pendula. Its silvery grey foliage looks great when combined with blues, pinks and white hardy perennials below. As they mature, the weeping habit needs maintaining with pruning, but a good choice for a smaller garden. Mature and majestic veteran trees are to be cherished in our parks, gardens and woodlands. I have fond memories of a specimen copper beech in a large country garden I worked at. It looked great in every season but especially striking covered in snow with low winter light shining through from the field beyond. All trees have different growth habits as they mature. Model railway exhibition This year is the 32nd exhibition and we are keeping our fingers crossed for the sun to again shine on us all day.

Over 25 layouts, seven demonstrations, five Railway societies and 14 Traders offering new & second hand items have been invited from all over. We have a wide variety of model layout sizes and scales attending, including the very popular ‘OO’, ‘N’, OO9, HO (American and continental gauge trains) and ‘O’ gauge, with some layouts featuring DCC control and sound. ‘CATO PASS’ is futuristic, an article has just appeared in the Railway Modelling press; ‘GREAT MINIONS RAILWAY’ is based on the Minions characters. By popular request also coming are ‘WENDSLEYDALE’ with its active Mice and ‘THOMAS in ‘G’ plus friends’ which is aimed to give children the opportunity to drive the trains. From Norfolk we will be having a 1950’s/60’s Hornby continental trains ‘LES TRAINS DE GRAND PERE’ (Grandad’s Trains) running. From Birmingham the ‘Smiths’ will be bringing another new layout ‘Eu (Le Treport) depot’ in ‘O’ gauge based on French Steam

trains. Outside the Royston & District Model engineering Society will be providing live Steam/Diesel rides (subject to weather conditions).Many exhibitors also welcome careful drivers, including children, to have a try on their layouts and answer questions about how they built them. Please just ask them. Our FREE ‘Heritage bus’ service will run an hourly service from Royston Bus Station from 10am, calling at the railway station (platform 2 side) at approximately 10 minutes past the hour to the exhibition! Return time is 20 minutes to the hour. Children in for free with paying adults (£5 per adult) Leaflets obtainable at the Museum, Royston Library or Posters around town. A bus timetable will be at the Bus & Railway Stations.

Mornings are spent teaching kids Crossfit (fitness through fun and games). It is so rewarding to be empowering the next generation, to help them become their own little superheroes. The afternoon are spent watch my eldest Max play rugby What are you most looking forward to this month? We are a Community Minded Fitness and Wellbeing Provider. I love giving back/ paying forward to the community. We regularly do events or provide services which benefit the community. Past events have included Motiv8 , a local government initiated fitness and well being program to help motivate local 12-16 year old students. Another program was our Refeed event to collect food for the local Food Back.

Wellbeing This month 24 - 25th Nov, we are doing our Annual 24 hr Fitness Challenge. This year we are raising money and awareness for the Arthur Rank Hospice in Cambridge on behalf or our mate Mick Weldon, who after a 3 year battle, sadly passed away of Cancer last month. Best thing that happened to you recently? Recently for me would be 5 years. The best thing was to retrain and to become a Fitness Professional. I absolutely love my job!! Absolutely love the fitness community we have and the family orientated culture we have. What has been the most valuable life lesson that you have learnt? I don’t align myself to any religion per say: My life is guided by three beliefs • I believe in Karma. For me that means you get back in life what you throw out there. Be it positive or negative energy, as the saying suggests, what goes around comes around. • Live with no regrets or SBR (She’ll Be Right) • Always back yourself, give it a crack, have a go. If it doesn’t workout learn from it. What inspirational quote sums you up? To me, I don’t want to die wondering or even going through life thinking ‘oh I wish I did that’. I listened to a great mate of mine’s podcast yesterday his message was something like this. “You can’t live courageously cautiously ”. The take home for me is you can’t win without being prepared to lose. These are educated risks and at times gut instincts, either way I had to be prepared to lose in order to win.I live by this in work and personal life. Initial analysis showed that almost no planes came back with damage to the cockpit or the tail section, so they decided not to protect those areas as they clearly didn’t get hit. They then appointed a mathematician to check the data and he completely disagreed. He pointed out that they only checked planes that made it home – which meant that they were able to fly with damage to all those areas. The planes that took hits in the cockpit area or tail section never returned home – so in fact those were the areas that needed the most protection! This was indeed found to be the case.
