White Christmas in Royston When Bing Crosby recorded ‘White Christmas’ in 1942 which Irving Berlin wrote, it sold over 50 million copies and went on to become the worlds biggest selling single of all time. A White Christmas is defined as ‘one snowflake on December 25th somewhere in the UK’. According to the Met Office this has happened 38 times in the last 54 years. But a proper White Christmas like in the song has only occured 4 times in the last 54 years. If we do experience a White Christmas this year it is doubtful whether it would match the UK’s greatest snowstorm of 1836 as described by Alfred Kingston 1983 book Fragments of Two Centuries. ‘The great snowstorm of 1836 was even more memorable than the two preceding storms of 1799 and 1814, for its suddeness, its extent and the increased number of stagecoaches “on the road” at that time, which suffered from the interpution of traffic. It commenced to snow on the night of Christmas Eve and snowed all day Sunday and the next day. No snowstorm in Great Britain for the previous hundred years equalled its violence and extent. On the
26th, the wind increased to a hurricane, and in the night the fall of snow was from four to six feet, while the drifts were 20/30 feet in depth. The storm spread all over Europe, and in this island all communication was cut off for a week. No coach got through from Cambridge until the following Thursday. Many a Christmas party that Christmas were minus their guests, for coaches were ‘snowed up’ all over the land. There were three coaches almost in sight of each other placed in and around Royston. One coach was stuck fast in the snow at the Cross in the centre of town; another just below the present railway bridge, and another at the bottom of Kneesworth House. All of the coaches were on the way to London at the time. The unfortunate passengers were obliged to spend Christmas in Royston as best they could. For a whole week no mail coach went into or came from London through Buntingford and Royston.

The small team draw on over 20 years experience of buying and selling Christmas trees to provide the very best quality trees from sustainably managed plantations at half the price of the Garden Centres. They will be selling the ever popular Nordman Fir, with its soft needles that will not fall when taken into a centrally heated house. Trees are 6-7 feet tall, the ideal height for the average home. The Royston Heath has proved to be an excellent site to select your tree with ample room to have a good look at the trees and plenty of space to park your vehicle. The Heath Sports Club always has excellent homemade soups and fresh bread if you need to warm up. Trees will only be available at weekends, the team will be at the Royston Heath to help you find your perfect tree on Dec 1st & 2nd, 8th & 9th, 15th & 16th and 22nd & 23rd. Once you have selected your tree it will be netted and ready for collection or carried to your car.
(the same as you’d take a bit off the end of cut flowers). Place the tree in a bucket of water for an hour or so while you get the decorations out of the loft. Bring in only when you’re ready to decorate the tree. Mount the tree in a water retaining tree stand and place away from direct heat. Keep the stand topped up with water every day, you’ll be amazed how much water your tree will take up! Why buy a real fresh cut tree? Real trees provide a wonderful fragrance. Artificial trees may last a few years but will last a lot longer in the landfill site, real trees are biodegradable. The Nordman Firs are grown in sustainable plantations and for every tree felled at least one more will be planted. Christmas tree plantations are on a 5 or 6 year cycle and provide a wonderful haven for a wide variety of wildlife.

December is a busy time for all, but for one person especially so, therefore it will come as no surprise to hear that Rotary will be helping Father Christmas both to do his rounds on his float and also for children to visit him locally in his grotto for a chat and to receive a present. Christmas tree LIGHT-UP A tall, heavily decorated, tree in St John The Baptist Parish Church in Royston has become a popular Christmas feature for the local community. Last year’s tree was a monster festive hit since it was the largest there had ever been in the church, measuring some 25 feet in height. It took a week to decorate and had close to 2000 baubles and over 300 metres of lights. As usual the bottom branches of the tree were left empty so that visitors could place baubles on it in memory of loved ones who were not with them at Christmas.

The sheer size of last year’s tree did present some difficulties though! The volunteers marshalled to move it from the churchyard where it had been dropped off, into the church, were completely unable to lift it off the ground. They eventually managed to drag, push and coerce it through the doors. The next challenge was how to manoeuvre it into its stand. This

When John Froggett set up as a sole practitioner offering accountancy services in 1998, he wanted to offer a less formal, jargon free service which has proved to be a popular formula! Over the last 20 years the business has grown from the dining room table to an office in the High Street, Royston and John still works with the first three clients who entrusted him with their business. Organic expansion has meant that as the business has grown, John has been able to offer gainful employment to four other members of his family!
Business Profile
In the early stages, working from home involved negotiating space with his wife and five children so he’s experienced first hand the trials and tribulations of setting up and expanding a business. The Accountancy Practice has recently acquired another accountancy business to incorporate and they are in the process of assimilating a bookkeeping business, headed by Steve Damallie. They are also providing work experience placements to bright young students, and next year it’s likely they’ll be expanding their team even further.

An external consultant has been appointed to prepare them for expansion and it seems like a new lease of life has been injected into the business.
John is very excited about the future; ‘I get enormous pleasure watching my two boys David and Adam passing their exams in tax and accountancy, they’re really embracing the future with an energy and enthusiasm I hadn’t anticipated. We love the buzz of helping clients sort their tax affairs out, creating solutions which perhaps no one else has considered and really getting to know our clients and their businesses’.

Royston U3A members were singing along to sounds from the sixties and hits from musicals like Oliver! in a talk on the genius of Lionel Bart. The boy from the East End’s earliest ambition was to be famous and his natural talent for brilliant lyric writing led to a spectacular rise to fame, said lifelong fan Mike Levy. By the age of 30 Bart had written the music and lyrics for several musicals including the internationally acclaimed Oliver! And he captured the spirit of the 1960s with a string
of hit songs including Cliff Richard’s Living Doll and Matt Monroe’s From Russia with Love. “Lionel Bart was one of the great lyrists of the 20th century. He was amazing,” said Mike. Focus on Royston Museum and Art Gallery
Our new Museum Curator
Royston Museum and Art Gallery have had an extremely active and successful year. Our thanks must go to Jenny Oxley, the previous Museum Manager who left in August, and to Amy Judd, the Museum Assistant, for making all of this possible.
In August we welcomed our new museum curator Madeline Odent. We would like to thank Madeline for all her involvement in the many activities this year.
Throughout the summer and autumn the Museum ran several activities. Craft was combined with local history and many ‘crafty’ children and adults enjoyed all the sessions. It all started with a Tie-Dye workshop, followed by a singing and drumming session and groups re-enacting the English Civil War and Viking invaders. Great fun was had with dinosaurs, prehistoric people and inspiring junk modelling.
Madeline is from the USA and has family living in Hertfordshire; she is also married to an Englishman. She gained a First in History (with a focus on Museum Studies) from Stetson University in Florida in 2014, and then gained a Master of Philosophy in British History from Oxford in 2016. She worked previously at Oak Hill and the Martha Berry Museum (in Georgia, USA) and at Stowe House (Buckinghamshire). Madeline is really looking forward to all of the opportunities at Royston, especially the forthcoming completion of the Tapestry, which is due to be about the same time that the Bayeux Tapestry returns to England. Madeline believes that local museums serve such an important purpose, and really hopes to continue making Royston Museum a home for all of the district’s community groups. Royston Museum is an Accredited Museum and their aim is to be the centre of the community and a thriving centre of learning and volunteering.
Museum Volunteers and Friends got involved with an entry for Wimpole Estate’s annual scarecrow competition. Thanks to some intriguing donations (golf shoes, a trumpet, a model crow), Amy put together Roy, who sat at Wimpole’s Walled Garden and told visitors some interesting facts about Royston’s past. The Friends and Volunteers also organised a Musical Evening Soiree in September with entertainment from talented local people. Amy Judd led an interesting talk about her work in the museum. Visitors had the chance to look around the store rooms and basement as they found out more about all the behind the scenes work that goes on in the museum. Amongst many other events, an art competition was held in October and November to commemorate the ending of World War 1 and schoolchildren were invited to share their impressions of the War. Adult Movement Classes are also regularly held, they are suitable for anyone with an interest in movement and give the opportunity to meet new people and keep fit and healthy. Royston Town Council welcomes a new Royston Cave Manager Nicky Paton was appointed in October and has taken over from James Robinson, who we would like to thank for his commitment and dedication over ten years. Nicky is a local illustrator and already a cave guide so he is already very knowlegeable regarding the history and facts about the cave. Royston Cave is a man-made cave lying below Melbourn Street, near to the crossroads formed by Ermine Street and the Icknield Way. It is Grade 1 Listed by English Heritage and is unique in Britain. The cave is open for public visits from Easter Saturday to the last Sunday in September for a unique and historic experience. www.roystoncave.co.uk

The Leete Charity Are you a student finding it difficult to make ends meet? Would you like some financial help with materials for or costs associated with your learning? The Leete Trust was founded in Royston in 1978 and provides grants towards the costs of further education. Applicants must be under 25 and have a place at university or college before they can receive the grant, though you can apply when you have a conditional offer. Previous recipients have found their grants to be invaluable and have used the award to cover items as diverse as field trips, books and transport costs. They have expressed their gratitude over the years: ‘I am writing to say thank you so much ... I have used the £200 towards paying for my bus pass to Cambridge Regional College.’ Royston student studying Child Care and Education (Sixth Form)
Royston Town Council once again celebrates Silver Sunday Royston Town Council once again hosted a free event at Royston Picture Palace for the over 65s to celebrate Silver Sunday, which is a national day to draw attention to the problem of loneliness amongst older people. Over eighty people attended to watch the film ‘Gentlemen Prefer Blondes’ and were served tea and cakes beforehand by several Town Councillors and our Town Clerk. They also had the chance to chat with the Mayor, Councillor Iain Leggett. The council funded transport for those who needed it, courtesy of Royston and District Community Transport.

A wet flat edged knife will help move the icing around without tearing the surface of the bake. If you are adding anything extra on top of the icing add now as a skin will form and you having to “push” your decorations will result in cracked icing Leave for a short time for the icing to set and then the tart is ready to be cut and served. Think Garden, Think Richard Garden Focus... Garden Styles selection Melbourn garden designer, Richard Arnott To continue my series of articles for 2018, designing with plants, this month I am going to look at evergreen shrub shape and form and how they can be used to give interest at this bare time of year. It is always key to evaluate the “garden worthiness” of the plants we include in our gardens. I like to look at the contrasting shapes and form as you will know but I also want to know how many seasons of interest the plant has. Evergreens tick the box for giving four seasons of interest but it is important to know how to use them to best effect Sweetly scented selections really help to lift the spirits on a winter’s day. If I am looking for a larger shrub I might use Mahonia x intermedia ‘Charity’ that has an spiky, evergreen leaf and long cylindrical spikes of yellow scented flowers. I would use this toward the back of the border. Medium sized scented shrubs could be used in the middle of the border. I
particularly like Daphnes because they have a compact habit and are reliable evergreens. Daphne bholua ‘Jacqueline Postill’ bears fragrant clusters of pale pink flowers above a mid-green leaf while Daphne odora ‘Aureo – marginata’ has smaller clusters of fragrant white pink flowers with a narrow yellow margin on a grey green leaf. At the front of a border I may use Christmas Box, Sarcococca hookeriana var. digyna that has narrow dark green leaves and clusters of tiny, sweetly scented white flowers. It is equally happy in sunshine or shade, but prefers shade. Vertical forms make a good structure for the hoar frosts to settle on. I do like a well clipped Yew / Taxus baccata hedge in a garden. It acts as a back drop and gives structure to a mixed border. The dark feathery foliage is a classic garden look. Although strictly speaking a tree, the vertical, columnar form of the Irish juniper Juniperus communis ‘Hobirnica’ looks great rising out of the fog on a wintery morning. Yew can also be grown in a columnar form if you use Taxus baccata ‘Fastigiata Robusta’. Mound forming shrubs look great surrounded by the dying winter forms of a naturalistic hardy perennial border. I am a big fan of using box balls in my borders mixed with other well behaved shrubs such as dog woods for the pretty stems. Remember it is always about plant associations and combinations that make for a great looking border. Box balls with Cornus alba ‘Sibirica’ and the ephemeral dying forms of Calamagrostis ‘Karl Forester’, Verbena ‘Lolipop’ and Phlomis russeliana would look

great in a little low winter light. Horizontal forms are great for delineating space in the garden. As gardens are becoming smaller you must carefully choose how we enclose the space. High hedges have their place but more we need smaller delineation of space that is easy to maintain but looks great. Step up the low evergreen hedging plant Buxus sempervirens / Box. It can be clipped and shaped to make a classic garden statement. The bare root season is now under way and this is a great time to purchase your box hedging at a good price. Plant into a well-drained prepared trench at five plants a linear metre and watch them grow. Berrying and variegated shrubs have particular resonance at this time of year for flora displays and wreaths. You could grow shrubs with this purpose in mind. I like Elaeagnus pungens ‘Maculata’, Rhamnus alaternus ‘Argenteovariegata’, and Euonymus fortunei ‘Emerald and Gold’. There are loads of Hollies to choose from. I like Ilex aquifolium ‘J.C. van Tol’, and Ilex aquifolium ‘Handsworth New Silver’. If the birds have not taken them Pyracantha berries look good mixed into a wreath too! Christmas is my favourite time of year and who doesn’t like an excuse to shop? I’m a firm believer in getting what I can locally and for me avoiding the pushy crowds. I tend to be a last-minute shopper but this year I’ve already started to make a list of what to buy with so many shops decorating their festive windows and promoting gift ideas, offers instore and on their media pages. So, I need to find gifts for: That special person in my life, well maybe something nice to wear or weekend trip away! Something for the girls in the office and close friends, candles, fizz and chocolates always go down well. Mum loves her perfume and jewellery and Dad loves anything in the garden or mechanical. Brother easy to please with a trip to Cambridge Wine for a special bottle of his favourite whiskey! Home-Start Matters Joe Rose, better known as local accountant John Froggett, has been lured into the recording studio! Joe has performed a rendition of a famous song in aid of our branch of Home-Start and had fun filming a lively, laughter filled video to support it, which includes an ‘all-star cast’ of extras from twenty seven local businesses! (You might even spot an appearance from The Listing Team!) Our charity is close to the heart of both John/Joe and the label boss Helen Meissner who have trained with us and in Helen’s case, worked for a few years as a volunteer. ‘Starting a singing career at 60 is not something I had ever imagined but it’s been great fun to record with award winning young

Royston & District Local History Society Our November lecture was The Remarkable Story of Heffers of Cambridge by Julie Bounford. Julie commenced by telling how Heffers began, grew and became known all over the world. They started life in Fitzroy Street in 1876 as a stationery business, aimed at University clients. They branched into printed matter, particularly academic volumes, which proved to be big sellers. In 1896, William opened a shop devoted to books in Petty Cury. It became familiar to generations of undergraduates, each one receiving the latest catalogue of academic books, turning each new intake into loyal customers. William had a son, Ernest who also joined the business and eventually took
