Royston baby Show Royston is set to host its fourth Baby & Toddler Show this year, at Meridian School on Saturday 9th March. Jane Wallington of Breeze Birthing and Clare Coningsby of Sling Me Clarefully, are this time, joined by Clare Watson of Daisy First Aid North Herts, in the organisation and sponsorship of the event. Plans are well under a way, as the trio are hoping to repeat the successes of previous yearswhere the event has typically drawn in over 400 visitors and even queues before 10am. The large main hall and the dining area will be filled with local businesses and organisations showcasing their array of products and services. As well as the 30+ stalls, free talks and workshops from local experts will be held on the stage in the main hall throughout the day.

There will be the famous raffle again, with some fantastic prizes, and this year, all proceeds are going towards the restoration work of Royston Parish Church following the recent fire tragedy. Jane Wallington, one of the organisers, said “Following last year’s show in our new venue- Meridian School, we are looking forward to providing Royston with another successful event this year. We’re delighted that Clare Watson has joined the team to help us to make this happen. We’re holding another large raffle, and this year, we’re keen to support the restoration project at Royston Church as much as we possibly can. I got married at the church, and my daughters were baptised there. It really is the hub of the community and so we are looking for raffle donations from businesses, or in the wider community,

Jane Harvey Jane Harvey is having an exhibition at Royston Museum. There will be a wide selection of original paintings, prints and cards for sale. As well as animals and wildlife subjects, there are also more imaginative works and examples of commissioned paintings.

Opening times at the Museum are 10am to 5pm on Wednesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays. The exhibition finishes on March 16th.

The year of the ‘Pig’, falling on 5th February my Birthday weekend can only mean a ‘Chinese take-away’ is on the menu…I have a whole range of foods that I consider comfort food and some Chinese foods make the list, I love nothing more than something simple like stir-fried veggies, noodles, and various chicken and duck dishes also make their way to the favourites. Sometimes instead of ordering a takeout, I (we) try making our own Chinese food dishes! Although it does say something when our local takeaway ‘Wing On’ is on speed dial and although 99% of the time it’s the same regular order they do recommend new dishes to try! What’s even better they deliver!

Otto von Bismarck, chancellor of the new Germany after the Franco Prussian war, concentrated on building a powerful state. He became known as the “Iron Chancellor” and from 1962. Kaiser Wilhelm 11, acceded the throne in 1888. He launched Germany on to a new course in foreign affairs. In a matter of days, the First World War began. Our next meeting ‘The Man Behind the Ryder Cup’ by John Hinesis on 7th February at 8pm, £2, The History Society meets in The Heritage Hall, Town Hall from October to May, on the first Thursday of the month.

fOXTON mEN’S bREAKFAST WI am Our guest speaker will be Barbara Kettel, with her husband Howard, both of whom have become regular members. Her talk is called “Cambridge City Foodbanks”. Barbara Kettle was one of the initiators of this Charity. The Foodbank gives food to needy people within a 10 mile radius of Cambridge. She will explain the scope of the foodbank in supporting those in need. All welcome including the ladies. Throughout 2019 our nominated charity has been Royston and District Community Transport. We were happy to welcome David Wherrell, the manager of RDCT. The scheme is aimed at people who are unable to use public transport. In 1994 RDCT was set up as a charity. The charity relies on volunteer drivers, they have 85 drivers and they carry out 60 journeys a day. This service is used to enable people to attend hospital, shopping and more. Pat Morritt, our president, presented a cheque for £600 to David at the end of the meeting.

February will feature the very popular Technology Tournament. In this our bright young students can showcase their ingenuity by solving technical problems to build some sort of device, to be revealed on the day, and which in previous years has featured a bridge, a rocket and a self-propelled vehicle pushing a load along. On February 22nd in Thriplow Village Hall we will be repeating, by popular demand, a Celidh which was a wonderful success last year, and featured our then President dancing expertly around crossed swords – luckily he still has both feet. www.roystonrotary.com/

Phase 3 - Restoration The Church building and internal structures are grade I listed, so restoration and other improvements will be guided by the Diocese of St. Albans and English Heritage to ensure our beautiful Church is restored appropriately.

Royston Parish Church is a focal point for the whole community of Royston. We will be restoring the Church following the devastating fire and we will be taking the opportunity to update and refurbish it ready for the years ahead. Restoration is now underway. This is expected to take around 18 months and will consist of three phases.

‘forty steves’ at barkway The Panto season isn’t behind us yet. One local production will extend it into February. The Barkway Players are hard at work rehearsing their new show, Ali, Barbara and the Forty Steves. The show will bring the mystic Orient to Barkway Village Hall – but the title is a little … “bazaar”. Who are these forty Steves? Ann-Marie Kirkham, junior cast director, is tight lipped. “Everyone’s heard of Ali Baba and the Forty Thieves – well, we’ve taken that story and given it a twist, something we always like to do at Barkway. I don’t want to say too much more about it, because it might spoil the fun! But I can say that the show features traditional pantomime characters – a dame, a baddie, heroic characters called Ali and Barbara – and yes, forty Steves. And there’s music and dancing and fun!” This will be the 27th annual

Barkway Players pantomime. Like every show, it has been written by the Players’ own in-house creative team. Lots of local people are involved, including a group of children who form an important part of the cast. ‘Right to Repair’ - an international campaign putting pressure on manufacturers to make their products last longer, and easier to repair when they go wrong - has been launched. Campaigners are also demanding that companies make spare parts easier to buy. The campaign also celebrates the efforts of community repair groups like the Royston Repair Café to keep items out of landfill. Great Chishill Windmill The year ended with the windmill and the Trust in a very satisfactory position. The extra Listed Building Consent has been gained and work is underway on the last two pieces of the structural restoration jigsaw. The grant from Historic England has sufficient remaining funds to cover work on the tail and sails required to satisfy HE’s requirement for removal of the mill from the Heritage at Risk listing and the Trust has plans for income to cover on-going maintenance. With respect to the finances beyond the HE grant, the Parish Council has been most generous in offering to undertake repairs to the access stairway and the fitting of safety handrails - another essential for visitor access. Furthermore we have had a successful year with novel fundraising ideas. Sales of apple juice, tea towels, etc. and the raffle for our ‘windmill clock’ made and

donated by David Brearley (nephew of our Trust founder, the late Jim Brearley) at the Craft Fair before Christmas raised over £500. Together with half of the proceeds of the Fair itself, generously donated by organiser, Lindsey Crawley, we made over £800 contribution to the fund. This, together with contributions from the Pink Wellies metal dectorists and the kind supporters who are making donations following our standing order appeal, provides a good start to our target of a sustainable income stream that will see our iconic windmill safe for the foreseeable future.

From Tallulah’s Kitchen Biscotti Hello my fellow foodies... and welcome to another bright and shiny edition of The Listing. This month I would like to share with you a recipe for Biscotti. These twice-baked, crispy teatime treats originate from Italy and traditionally are made with Almonds. Originally these were twice (or even thrice) baked to dry them out to ensure they kept for longer, which make them the perfect treat to keep on stand by for unexpected guests or to give away as gifts. So let us begin. Preheat the oven to 180° and line a large baking sheet with non stick baking paper. Biscotti 225g Plain flour 1tsp Baking powder 175g Caster sugar Zest of 1 orange finely grated 2 eggs from happy and healthy free roaming hens 150g whole hazelnuts lightly toasted 75g dark chocolate, cut into small chunks. 70% cocoa solids works best Let’s begin by mixing the flour, baking

powder, sugar and orange zest into a large bowl. In a separate bowl, lightly beat the eggs, then add them to the dry ingredients and mix, with your hand until the mixture comes together and knead to form a smooth dough. Next add the hazelnuts and chocolate and knead again. Now, lightly flour your surface and turn the dough out on to it. Divide the mixture in half and form each half into a “sausage” shape. Place each half onto your paper-lined baking sheet but take care to leave plenty of space between your two “sausages” as these beauties will spread. Pop into the oven for 20-25 minutes, you are aiming to achieve a light, even, golden brown colour. Next remove from the oven and cool on wire racks for 10 minutes, while this is happening turn the oven down to 140°. Once completely cool we are going to cut the dough rolls diagonally into approximately 1cm thick slices. ( cutting the dough when it is still warm will result in “squashing” the shape of the final slices.) I managed 20 slices from each giving me 40 lovely slices and 4 knobbly ended which were snaffled up by “kitchen loiterers!” Return each slice flat onto the baking sheet and pop the tray back

Think Garden, Think Richard Materials For A Purpose... Driveway Materials Melbourn garden designer, Richard Arnott Continuing my new series of articles for 2019, Materials For A Purpose, I am going to be discussing how to choose the right materials and how they best fit into the design of a space. This month I want to explore edging materials and how they can be used effectively to give definition to a space. Retaining edges are really important to stop ingress of unwanted materials spilling out into a space. Bark is very popular as a mulch in the garden, but it does have a tendency to move between spaces if it is not retained with an edge. Depending on the style of the space something as simple as tantalised timber edging sunk in the ground will reduce the amount of bark moving onto a lawn. The finishing height is important, if your edge is too low the materials will continue to move, but also if too high it will stand out. When we build new gardens, we adjust the ground height to fit. Installation of an edge in an established garden could require changes to the levels to allow the edge to function. Migration of gravel can be easily prevented by using an edge. I am a big fan of old-style red brick pavers, not only do they define an edge they look great too! Indian sandstone continues to be very popular in gardens and can be supplied as 100 x 100 mm setts. Last summer we used granite setts in a contemporary city garden to define the edge of the paving and retain the planting borders. The colour

helped connect with the gun metal grey window fixtures and provided harmony of materials in the design. Mowing strips are a great way to define the shape of a lawn and make the maintenance simple. I love to have shape to the lawn but if not well maintained the edge and definition can be easily lost. By adding a course of engineering bricks or setts it allows the mower to pass over and avoids having to cut the grass edge with shears. It is a great time saver for contemporary gardens where repetition of materials is key. I would normally want to use the same sett or brick material as the paving selection. Metal edges have become very popular too to retain a prescribed shape to a lawn. There are many products, but I like to use lengths of steel edging cut and welded to fit. Transitions from one space to the next can be accentuated by using edging materials. In modern garden design it is often talked about creating garden rooms, but for these to fit together the change needs to be marked. Stepping up or down into a new space, or passing under an arch are classic ways to mark a transition between spaces. However, a simple change of edging material at the transition point is very effective too. For example, an oak sleeper on edge could be used when stepping off a paved area onto a curving path of timber with gravel in fill. Planting is a softer way to form an edge and can be over looked as a way to define a space. I prefer to use plants where possible to create a softer feel. Low hedging such as Box or Berberis can make an excellent edging and provide low enclosure. Repetition of hardy perennials will work well too. I have lost count of the numbers of times I have seen catmint / Nepeta ‘Six Hills Giant’ used in gardens, but it is effective. Edging does not have to be flat and low. I love to define

edges of space with hedges of plants such as Beech, Hornbeam or Yew. The taller edging will provide more enclosure and privacy to a space and thus change the atmosphere of that space, but it is all edging. Planting your boundary with a native hedgerow mixture is great for the wildlife and is edging too. Think outside the box! “Give yourself love this Valentines” Like everyone it seems these days my life is rather hectic, balancing work life and home life can be more than just a challenge it can be a work of art, a juggling act of perfect precision with time, energy and everyday demands. Yoga has taught me to stop. To be in the present moment and that just breathing is sometimes all you need. Being a newly qualified teacher I translate that as much as I can to my students, which is easy when you are relaxed on a yoga mat with peaceful surroundings and someone giving you the permission to totally let go, but what about off the mat? What about in everyday life? What about at work, at home or trapped in a traffic jam? Self care or self love has quickly become clear to me that the “selfish” presumptions of the term is far from the truth, in fact we are starving

ourselves, extremely dehydrated from lack of self-love. Think about it, if you take more time to give yourself more love and care then surely that can only spread into more love and care for the people around you. So what is this self love malarkey? I believe that the answer to this is open to interpretation; it’s all in the name “self-love”. Self being YOU, what do you LOVE? It could be yoga, the gym, reading the latest poem book, growing tomatoes, soaking in a bath or sitting in a dark room. Whatever it is that your inner self enjoys and loves, anything at all that enriches the soul...DO THAT!

At work, I’ve been asked to create a newsletter – so here are my thoughts on how to write a brilliant one! It boils down to four things; what it says, how it says it, who is going to read it and how it is being delivered. What does it say? • Content is king – don’t make it just a list of adverts or corporate waffle. • Provide content worth reading. This should be obvious really, but this isn’t about asking, ‘What do I want to say?’ – what you should be asking is, ‘What do my readers want to hear?’ • Know why your readers care about what you are writing, and 14:08:51 why reading this will be to their advantage. How does it say it? • Imagine you met one of your readers and decided to tell them this great piece of useful/funny/ interesting information – and write down what you would say. • Write in a language they understand and keep it short and to the point. Who is going to read it? • Defining your audience is

actually your first decision. The best newsletters are super niche. If you try to be all things to all people, you’ll end up being nothing to anyone. Either send different newsletters to different audiences, or clearly divide your newsletter into distinct sections for different market segments. How is it being delivered?

• Letter, email, flyer – the principles are the same. • The first thing the reader sees (envelope, flyer graphics, email subject line) must promise that by reading further they will get something they really want. And they should read it now! • Within the first couple of sentences, emphasise your credibility and capability to deliver the promised benefits. • Then your copy needs to deliver on that promise – but that part’s down to you!
