Did you know that an estimated 25 million Valentine’s Day cards are given each year in the UK alone? We are celebrating love in this issue with our annual wedding feature, which highlights those businesses who provide services for your special day. This month, we also have an update from Royston Parish Church and the works that they will be completing following December’s devastating fire. You can find out more about how you can contribute to their fundraising. Our new Hidden Royston series which offers a fasinating insight into the world of cellars and basements below the High Street, and hear how this subterranean space is put to good use by the business owners. ‘forty steves’ at barkway The Panto season isn’t behind us yet. One local production will extend it into February. The Barkway Players are hard at work rehearsing their new show, Ali, Barbara and the Forty Steves. The show will bring the mystic Orient to Barkway Village Hall – but the title is a little … “bazaar”. Who are these forty Steves? Ann-Marie Kirkham, junior cast director, is tight lipped. “Everyone’s heard of Ali Baba and the Forty Thieves – well, we’ve taken that story and given it a twist, something we always like to do

at Barkway. I don’t want to say too much more about it, because it might spoil the fun! But I can say that the show features traditional pantomime characters – a dame, a baddie, heroic characters called Ali and Barbara – and yes, forty Steves. And there’s music and dancing and fun!” This will be the 27th annual Barkway Players pantomime. Like every show, it has been written by the Players’ own inhouse creative team. Lots of local people are involved, including a group of children who form an important part of the cast.

Below the High Street As the so-called ‘death of the High Street’ continues to hit the headlines, a number of enterprising businesses in Royston’s High Street are making the most of available space by going underground. At The Old Bull at the top of Royston High Street, the cellar area if purely functional for staff access only but with, for many, an all-important role. The unpretty purposebuilt space keeps the amber nectar at a steady 8ºC before being pumped up to thirsty drinkers above, and stores empty kegs for collection after Christmas and New Year celebrations. development of their premises is a complete contrast to the pub cellar. Here clients can relax with a coffee rather than a beer, while being pampered in a tranquil space that includes two treatment rooms and an open area for pedicures. So unusual is the setting that prospective clients come by just to take a look. A short distance from the bottom of the High Street is the Glazed Creations studio where all ages and abilities paint pottery – from mugs and plates to other decorative keepsakes. Their ‘below stairs facility’ is used by both public and staff – there’s a room for party bookings alongside two kilns that fire the glaze on their customers’ creations. St John the baptist church update Royston Parish Church is a focal point for the whole community of Royston. We will be restoring the Church following the devastating fire and we will be taking the opportunity to update and refurbish it ready for the years ahead. Restoration is now underway. This is expected to take around 18 months and will consist of three phases.
We would like to thank the people of Royston and beyond for their kind messages of support and amazing generosity.
Phase 1 – Emergency The Church is enclosed in scaffolding to allow a temporary metal roof to be fitted and to enable specialists to check that the bells are still safely attached to the tower.
If you wish to support the Church financially, you can donate at

Phase 3 - Restoration The Church building and internal structures are grade I listed, so restoration and other improvements will be guided by the Diocese of St. Albans and English Heritage to ensure our beautiful Church is restored appropriately.

Chinese Year takes place this year on the 5th of February and this year is the year of the Pig. Did you know that the celebration of Chinese New Year is the longest Chinese holiday. The Spring Festival is 15 days but the celebrations actually start on New Years Eve! Another fun fact is that no showering, cleaning or throwing out rubbish is allowed on New Years Day! This is to make sure you don’t wash away the good luck.

The grant from Historic England has sufficient remaining funds to cover work on the tail and sails required to satisfy HE’s requirement for removal of the mill from the Heritage at Risk listing and the Trust has plans for income to cover on-going maintenance. With respect to the finances beyond the HE grant, the Parish Council has been most generous in offering to undertake repairs to the access stairway and the fitting of safety handrails - another essential for visitor access. WI am Royston & District Throughout 2019 our nominated charity been Royston and District Community Local History Society has Transport. Our first lecture of 2019 was the Causes of World War One, with Don Chiswell’s account of what happened. There was a chain of events, building up over four decades, which caused the war to end all wars. Otto von Bismarck, chancellor of the new Germany after the Franco Prussian war, concentrated on building a powerful state. He became known as the “Iron Chancellor” and from 1962. Kaiser Wilhelm 11, acceded the throne in 1888. He launched Germany on to a new course in foreign affairs. In a matter of days, the First World War began. Our next meeting ‘The Man Behind the Ryder Cup’ by John Hinesis on 7th February at 8pm, £2, The History Society meets in The Heritage Hall, Town Hall from October to May, on the first Thursday of the month. We meet in the Town Hall on Mondays, 8-10pm. Wendy Pearce, 01763 231381

BiSCOTTI Hello my fellow foodies... and welcome to another bright and shiny edition of The Listing. This month I would like to share with you a recipe for Biscotti. These twice-baked, crispy teatime treats originate from Italy and traditionally are made with Almonds. Originally these were twice (or even thrice) baked to dry them out to ensure they kept for longer, which make them the perfect treat to keep on stand by for unexpected guests or to give away as gifts. So let us begin. Preheat the oven to 180° and line a large baking sheet with non stick baking paper. Biscotti 225g Plain flour 1tsp Baking powder 175g Caster sugar Zest of 1 orange finely grated Two eggs from happy and healthy free roaming hens 150g whole hazelnuts lightly toasted 75g dark chocolate, cut into small chunks. 70% cocoa solids works best. Let’s begin by mixing the flour, baking powder, sugar and orange zest into a large bowl. In a separate bowl, lightly
beat the eggs, then add them to the dry ingredients and mix, with your hand until the mixture comes together and knead to form a smooth dough. Next add the hazelnuts and chocolate and knead again. Now, lightly flour your surface and turn the dough out on to it. Divide the mixture in half and form each half into a “sausage” shape. Place each half onto your paper-lined baking sheet but take care to leave plenty of space between your two “sausages” as these beauties will spread. Pop into the oven for 20-25 minutes, you are aiming to achieve a light, even, golden brown colour. Next remove from the oven and cool on wire racks for 10 minutes, while this is happening turn the oven down to 140°. Once completely cool we are going to cut the dough rolls diagonally into approximately 1cm thick slices. ( cutting the dough when it is still warm will result in “squashing” the shape of the final slices.) I managed 20 slices from each giving me 40 lovely slices and four knobbly ended which were snaffled up by “kitchen loiterers!” Return each slice flat onto the baking sheet and pop the tray back into the now cooler oven for another 15 minutes. This will dry the biscotti further and lightly colour it too. Remove from the oven and cool completely onto a wire cooling rack. And worry not dear reader, these beauties will take on their traditional hard exterior as they cool. All that remains is for you to do now is to brew a strong coffee, invite round some friends and enjoy the biscotti over a good, long chat! Until next time dear reader..

Best Man Speech - Dream or Nightmare? If you’ve been asked to be the Best Man at your friend’s wedding you are probably starting to worry already about making the speech. Fear of public speaking is one of the most common phobias and can get in the way of you enjoying the rest of the event. But there are easy techniques you can learn to build your confidence.
1.practice A month before the wedding, start to feeling confident. Close your eyes
and picture an occasion when you felt really confident. Make the picture as big, bright and colourful as you can. When you are experiencing that confident feeling as strongly as possible, press the tips of your thumb and first finger together firmly. This is your confidence anchor.
2.
In the week before the wedding, before you go to sleep every night, imagine yourself making a brilliant speech. See yourself standing confidently, speaking easily, the smiling faces in front of you. Hear them laughing at your jokes and clapping as you finish. Enjoy that good feeling of a job well done. Press the tips of your thumb and first finger together to ‘fire’ your confidence anchor.
3. Just before you stand up to make the speech, take a few moments to concentrate on your breathing. Breathe down into your stomach and make each out-breath slightly longer than the in-breath. This will trigger relaxation.
4.
When you stand up, plant your feet firmly hip distance apart and stand in your confident posture. Fire your confidence anchor.
5.
Take plenty of sips of water. This will keep your mouth moist and give you a chance to look at your notes
6.
At the beginning of your speech, let your eyes go out of focus so that you can take in the whole room. Once you are feeling more confident, let your eyes focus on the people who are smiling and laughing - there will be plenty of them.
7. Enjoy yourself - this is your moment! © Pat Duckworth www.roystonhypnotherapy.co.uk

Hooray! You’re engaged!
Let the planning begin
Here’s my Super 7 slip-ups to avoid…
5. Here’s a practical tip for the Grooms – pack a spare white shirt! Accidents happen!
2. BUT don’t book your venue until you know your budget. Hiring a castle is exciting, not being able to afford food because of its cost, isn’t!
7. And a cheeky seventh suggestion from me; don’t forget to book First Dance lessons. Everyone should dance on their Big Day. A special dance can create a lovely surprise for your family and friends. Step out in style!
Business Profile
1. Don’t do anything until you have found your venue. This will set the date, style, location and capacity of your wedding.
3. Don’t go on a crash diet; instead adopt healthier eating six months before the big day so you slowly arrive at your ideal weight. Why not join a dance class together to help shed a few pounds? 4. Speaking of food, you won’t want a tired DJ or an exhausted photographer! Plan on feeding all those working for you during the reception - your wedding planner, photographer, videographer, and DJ or band. Have this cost in your budget.
24
6. Don’t forget to gently sandpaper the bottom of your new shoes! You don’t want to be slipping on the dance floor!
I can help create, with the happy couple, a dance that suits their personality, confidence and dance ability. No previous dance skills are required, and lessons can be held locally or at a location of your choice. besPoke wedding rings
Business Profile
Unlike many aspects of your wedding like the cake and the flowers, your wedding bands will last a lifetime so it’s worth spending time finding the perfect pair. While plain bands will always remain classic, at Harriet Kelsall Bespoke Jewellery we have seen a number of trends across bespoke wedding ring design. As engagement rings become increasingly decorative, customers are choosing to complement the design with stone set wedding rings. This is a great option if your job requires you to remove your engagement ring as you will still be left with an interesting wedding ring. It’s also important to consider whether you would like a matching wedding band (i.e depth, width and profile) or if you would like a contrasting design to your engagement ring. It’s not always easy finding a wedding ring that fits comfortably alongside an unusual engagement
26
ring but we can design a fitted wedding band that matches the shape while enhancing the engagement ring rather than upstaging it. Men are also choosing more design led wedding rings over plain bands. As bespoke designers, we work with many men who wish to create something unique, often choosing contrasting finishes or engraving to mirror a certain aspect of their partner’s ring. In terms of metal, yellow gold has been a particularly popular choice for the last year but platinum and palladium follow closely behind. We’ve also seen an increase in mixing metals as well as the use of Fairtrade gold which is a great ethical choice.

Think Garden, Think Richard
Materials For A Purpose... Driveway Materials Melbourn garden designer, Richard Arnott
Continuing my new series of articles for 2019, Materials For A Purpose, I am going to be discussing how to choose the right materials and how they best fit into the design of a space. This month I want to explore edging materials and how they can be used effectively to give definition to a space. Retaining edges are really important to stop ingress of unwanted materials spilling out into a space. Bark is very popular as a mulch in the garden, but it does have a tendency to move between spaces if it is not retained with an edge. Depending on the style of the space something as simple as tantalised timber edging sunk in the ground will reduce the amount of bark moving onto a lawn. The finishing height is important, if your edge is too low the materials will continue to move, but also if too high it will stand out. When we build new gardens, we adjust the ground height to fit. Installation of an edge in an established garden could require changes to the levels to allow the edge to function. Migration of gravel can be easily prevented by using an edge. I am a big fan of old-style red brick pavers, not only do they define an edge they look great too! Indian sandstone continues to be very popular in gardens and can be supplied as 100 x 100 mm setts. Last summer we used granite setts in a contemporary city garden to define the edge of the paving and retain the planting borders. The colour helped connect with the gun metal grey window fixtures and provided harmony of materials in the design. Mowing strips are a great way to define the shape of a lawn and make the maintenance simple. I love to have shape to the lawn but if not well maintained the edge and definition can be easily lost. By adding a course of engineering bricks or setts it allows the mower to pass over and avoids having to cut the grass edge with shears. It is a great time saver for contemporary gardens where repetition of materials is key. I would normally want to use the same sett or brick material as the paving selection. Metal edges have become very popular too to retain a prescribed shape to a lawn. There are many products, but I like to use lengths of steel edging cut and welded to fit. Transitions from one space to the next can be accentuated by using edging materials. In modern garden design it is often talked about creating garden rooms, but for these to fit together the change needs to be marked. Stepping up or down into a new space, or passing under an arch are classic ways to
mark a transition between spaces. However, a simple change of edging material at the transition point is very effective too. For example, an oak sleeper on edge could be used when stepping off a paved area onto a curving path of timber with gravel in fill. Planting is a softer way to form an edge and can be over looked as a way to define a space. I prefer to use plants where possible to create a softer feel. Low hedging such as Box or Berberis can make an excellent edging and provide low enclosure. Repetition of hardy perennials will work well too. I have lost count of the numbers of times I have seen catmint / Nepeta ‘Six Hills Giant’ used in gardens, but it is effective. Edging does not have to be flat and low. I love to define edges of space with hedges of plants such as Beech, Hornbeam or Yew. The taller edging will provide more enclosure and privacy to a space and thus change the atmosphere of that space, but it is all edging. Planting your boundary with a native hedgerow mixture is great for the wildlife and is edging too. Think outside the box! Looking After you
“Give yourself love this Valentines” Like everyone it seems these days my life is rather hectic, balancing work life and home life can be more than just a challenge it can be a work of art, a juggling act of perfect precision with time, energy and everyday demands. Yoga has taught me to stop. To be in the present moment and that just breathing is sometimes all you need. Being a newly qualified teacher I translate that as much as I can to my students, which is easy when you are relaxed on a yoga mat with peaceful surroundings and someone giving you the permission to totally let go, but what about off the mat? What about in everyday life? What about at work, at home or trapped in a traffic jam? Self care or self love has quickly become clear to me that the “selfish” presumptions of the term is far from the truth, in fact we
are starving ourselves, extremely dehydrated from lack of self-love. Think about it, if you take more time to give yourself more love and care then surely that can only spread into more love and care for the people around you. So what is this self love malarkey? I believe that the answer to this is open to interpretation; it’s all in the name “selflove”. Self being YOU, what do you LOVE? It could be yoga, the gym, reading the latest poem book, growing tomatoes, soaking in a bath or sitting in a dark room. Whatever it is that your inner self enjoys and loves, anything at all that enriches the soul...DO THAT!

Reach out North Herts
Reach Out North Herts and Stevenage is a new scheme in Hertfordshire which is looking for volunteers. It links up local people who are home from hospital and lonely with volunteers who can offer a friendly face and a chat. Just giving a small amount of your time can make a huge difference From a cuppa and companionship, to picking up a prescription or making sure there’s milk in the fridge, all you need to do is register your willingness to help. You can give as much or as little time as you would like to fit around your schedule. To volunteer, you need to register via the Ami website here www.withami.co.uk and complete all the usual checks so that we can get you started and match you with someone local to you.

Royston Repair Cafe
‘Right to Repair’ - an international campaign putting pressure on manufacturers to make their products last longer, and easier to repair when they go wrong - has been launched. Campaigners are also demanding that companies make spare parts easier to buy. The campaign also celebrates the efforts of community repair groups like the Royston Repair Café to keep items out of landfill. The green group’s next free repair session is on Sunday 10th February, when volunteers will be celebrating their 5th birthday and a funding award from the Locality Budget of Cllr Fiona Hill. Owners are asked to book in their broken items in advance. Royston Scouts HQ, Barkway St, Royston SG8 9EW Sunday 10th February, 10am www.facebook.com/RoystonRepairCafe

Calling all ex-greneway pupils and staff
We hope you will be able to join us, help us to celebrate a fabulous fifty years of Greneway School and share your journeys during, and since, the ‘Greneway Years’ with friends, colleagues and Greneway staff past and present. There will be: • Special displays – old and new - of ‘Greneway past and present’ in the Crush Hall, Hall, Gym and Drama studio. • A ‘Listening Booth’ to record reflections and memories • Light refreshments to re-hydrate whilst ‘catching up’ with other Greneway Alumni… The Greneway School Saturday 30th March, 12pm-4pm http://bit.ly/2VSKJ6e
News from Royston Fire station It is appliance safety month for us, we are encouraging our communities to register their appliances with their providers and get their white goods serviced regularly. It is also a good idea to check websites for updates on your appliance and to see if your appliance is due a recall. We had an incident last week involving a washing machine and this is just a small reminder that these items need to be checked and maintained. http://bit.ly/RoystonFireStation

sharon mentions.. ‘Gong hei fat choy’ Happy Royston In blue Chinese New Year! The year of the ‘Pig’, falling on 5th February my Birthday weekend can only mean a ‘Chinese take-away’ is on the menu…I have a whole range of foods that I consider comfort food and some Chinese foods make the list, I love nothing more than something simple like stir-fried veggies, noodles, and various chicken and duck dishes also make their way to the favourites. Sometimes instead of ordering a takeout, I (we) try making our own Chinese food dishes! Although it does say something when our local takeaway ‘Wing On’ is on speed dial and although 99% of the time it’s the same regular order they do recommend new dishes to try! What’s even better they deliver!

Professional Writing brilliant newsletters At work, I’ve been asked to create a newsletter – so here are my thoughts on how to write a brilliant one! It boils down to four things; what it says, how it says it, who is going to read it and how it is being delivered. What does it say? • Content is king – don’t make it just a list of adverts or corporate waffle. • Provide content worth reading. This should be obvious really, but this isn’t about asking, ‘What do I want to say?’ – what you should be asking is, ‘What do my readers want to hear?’ • Know why your readers care about what you are writing, and why reading this will be to their advantage. How does it say it? • Imagine you met one of your readers and decided to tell them this great piece of useful/ funny/interesting information – and write down what you would say. • Write in a language they understand and keep it short and to the point.
Who is going to read it? • Defining your audience is actually your first decision. The best newsletters are super niche. If you try to be all things to all people, you’ll end up being nothing to anyone. Either send different newsletters to different audiences, or clearly divide your newsletter into distinct sections for different market segments. How is it being delivered? • Letter, email, flyer – the principles are the same. • The first thing the reader sees (envelope, flyer graphics, email subject line) must promise that by reading further they will get something they really want. And they should read it now! • Within the first couple of sentences, emphasise your credibility and capability to deliver the promised benefits. • Then your copy needs to deliver on that promise – but that part’s down to you! Let me know how you get on!
