Out & About Thriplow Daffodil Weekend Every year, up to 14,000 people visit Thriplow to experience the warm and friendly atmosphere of our Daffodil Weekend charity fund raising event. This year the nominated charity is the Rosie Maternity Unit at Addenbrookes Charitable Trust who are raising funds for essential equipment needed by the Acute Neonatal Transport Service and the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, to help support newborn and vulnerable babies across the East of England. Over two days, visitors walk the car free village to look at the 100 daffodil varieties on display, visit the attractions and open gardens, potter around the stalls, take refreshment in the tea rooms serving homemade cakes and sandwiches, or eat delicious hot food while listening to live music.

For months beforehand and over the weekend itself, virtually everyone in the village (and many neighbouring villagers) volunteer to help organise the event – be it baking cakes, helping serve teas, working in the car park or picking up litter at the end of the day. Every year, the exceptional Thriplow community works hard to pull off one of the best loved charity events in Cambridgeshire. History Thriplow Daffodil Weekend started in 1969 when the church needed major roof repairs. Residents decided to raise funds by opening their gardens and making cups of tea for their visitors. They made an amazing £206 and were so delighted they decided to do it all again the following year – and so the Thriplow Daffodil Weekend was born. Raising funds for charity Thriplow Daffodil Weekend have now raised money for local charities to a

total of £560,000 over 50 years. The tireless work of the village was recognised in 2011 when the Committee received The Queens Award for Voluntary Service (the equivalent of an MBE for charities). Daffodils Each year, the village has planted more daffodils of both early and late varieties, to try and ensure they are prepared for most things the weather can throw at them. They now have over half a million daffodils planted in the village, and around 100 different varieties on show including a new variety of narcissus dedicated to us called Thriplow Gold. Villages around royston - Exhibition St John The Baptist Church Update Last year a small group of WaterAid volunteers looked at the period before piped water arrived in the villages around Royston in the 1930’s. With assistance from staff members of Cambridge Central Library, Royston Library and Royston Museum we drew on maps, published accounts, and extracts from tape-recorded oral histories. The result is our free to borrow “Villages Here & Villages There” Exhibition. It comprises illustrated vertical stands and free-standing panels. They display photographs and detailed accounts of watercart deliveries, water stand pipes, “night soil men” going about their work, and the use of chamber pots and garden “privies” in Royston’s nearby villages: HERE. These important historic images and accounts including original objects - are available free to borrow by local schools or groups. They stand in the exhibition alongside images of WaterAid’s vital work

in desperately poor villages THERE across the world. Royston’s Town Mayor Councillor Iain Leggett very kindly launched this ‘Villages Here & Villages There’ Exhibition recently in Royston Museum. It is in the Museum until Saturday 16th March available to be visited free during Museum opening hours. Some highly unique “experience” raffle prizes are listed there to be won. At 11am on Saturday 16th March Tim Baker, Principal Hydrogeologist and Managing Director, B.A. Hydro Solutions Ltd based in Shepreth will give a related talk with Q & A at the Museum. Free admission. All welcome. www.roystonmuseum.org.uk For information about borrowing Exhibition: 01763 260253 or email h.m.pollock@gmail.com

The emergency phase of restoration is almost complete. As everyone in the area will have seen, the church is encased in extensive scaffolding and waterproof covers. Inside the tower there is a wooden platform below the bells which will prevent them from falling, and has allowed specialists to examine the bells. All eight bells are damaged so they will have to be removed for repair, before being re-tuned and replaced. Planning for salvage of the church contents is underway, and an archaeologist will be visiting soon to survey the

for our next concert scheduled for 6th April in Royston Parish Church – J.S. Bach’s great St John Passion, a huge and exciting undertaking or the choir. Rehearsals are continuing in Royston Methodist Church where we were pleased to welcome several new members this term and the Bach concert is booked for beautiful Ashwell Parish Church. As many local people know, Royston Choral Society has been based in the Parish Church since it first started over 40 years ago. Most concerts are performed there and nearly all rehearsals take place there too. Back in December members marvelled at the huge Christmas tree being decorated next to the pulpit while we practised Benjamin Britten’s Ceremony of Carols to be performed there on 22nd December. Little did singers imagine what was to come with the dreadful fire two weeks before our concert. The Old Bull and Methodist Church helped out with Tuesday night rehearsal venues and our successful concert was relocated to Meridian School with much appreciated co-operation from staff, especially on the night of the concert. The Chairman and committee breathed a sigh of relief but then had little time to arrange rehearsal premises for the coming months and a venue

Our February lecture was, Samuel Ryder by Penny Thea. Born in 1858 one of eight, Samuel joined his father’s market gardening business. Aged 32, he married Helen, they had three daughters. Noticing that the public could not afford seeds, decided to sell penny packets of seed by mail order. The business grew and moved to larger premises, allowing the family to move into a larger house.

In 1903 he became town mayor. He was suffering from ill-health. He was recommended fresh air and a round of golf and became a competent player. He wanted to challenge the Americans and give the Brits a chance. His efforts were rewarded when he donated a gold cup for the first official Ryder Cup match in 1927. Choose the best whole Hello my fellow foodies... prepare raspberries and set them aside. Mix the and welcome to another bright and shiny edition of The Listing. As Easter falls late this year Shrove Tuesday falls in March so I thought I would share with you a slightly different version of a pancake recipe. This one is not only simple and easy to make but it uses oats so it is naturally gluten free and also rather tasty! American Style Breakfast Pancakes (Gluten free version.) • 2 eggs from happy free running hens • 40g oats • Finely grated zest of one orange • 40g fat free natural yogurt • 1/2 tsp of baking powder • 4 drops of vanilla essence • 50g quark ( fat free soft cheese) • 200g raspberries (I used frozen but fresh would work just as well) • Sugar to taste

broken pieces of raspberries into the quark adding a sprinkling of sugar to taste if you have a sweet tooth, but take care not to over mix - you are only aiming to combine the ingredients- over mixing may make the quark flatten and runny. Store this in the fridge until you are ready to serve. Now, just like traditional pancakes, heat up your best non stick pan. To test if it is ready pour a drop of the batter into the pan and it should “sizzle” and cook straight away. Non stick pans shouldn’t need any additional oil but add a tiny amount if sticking occurs.

dollop of raspberry quark onto a pancake, top with raspberries then another pancake and repeat as long as your nerve holds or until you run out of the components! These are also delicious made with chopped peacan nuts and served with maple syrup, or substitute the orange zest for lemon zest and while the batter is cooking drop in a few blueberries. For those with a more savoury palette add some chopped herbs and/or a sprinkling of parmesan cheese to the batter and serve with garlic mushrooms and grilled tomatoes for an alternative breakfast. I’d love to hear about your creations. Until next time dear reader...

News from your Town Council – March 2019 Focus on Royston Market The market should be a social hub for the town and it would be nice to think that we could see a resurgence of interest among the local community. The challenge faced is encouraging new traders to Royston but to do this they need to feel confident that there is adequate footfall to support their businesses. And of course, I understand that footfall will only increase if there is an incentive to attend and the commodities being sold make it worthwhile for customers to want to visit.

Our new Market Manager is Bob Mills who took up his position with Royston Town Council on 2 January 2019. He has lived in Royston for over 12 years and having decided to dispense with the commute into London seized the opportunity to take on this role. Prior to commencing this appointment he worked for over 27 years with the London Borough of Tower Hamlets. During that time he worked as a housing manager, was responsible for services promoting independent living for the elderly and latterly was Tower Hamlets Corporate Contact Centre Manager. In that capacity he was dealing with a vast array of council services which included housing repairs, pest control, anti-social behaviour, refuse and recycling and parking. He therefore brings to our town a wealth of experience and knowledge. Bob commented as follows: “From week one of living in Royston my family has made an effort to support both the market and the High Street and my wife actually set up a food stall on Saturdays shortly after we moved into the area. There is no doubt that the market has contracted a little since then but it retains some really good food outlets and other interesting stalls and we have always made a point of shopping there at least once a week.

The food stalls on the market offer excellent fresh produce and I can vouch for this as a customer myself. The quality is outstanding and if there are any foodies out there I would highly recommend you give them a try. However, the objective in the coming year is to try to introduce a greater diversity of products and I hope that residents will support this initiative by making an effort to spend a little time on the market and see exactly what is on offer. Since taking up my appointment I have spoken to dozens of people who feel pretty much without exception, that a thriving market is important for the area. However, a significant percentage of those people also admit to never visiting it, let alone making a purchase, and hopefully that can change in the future. High streets and markets throughout the country are struggling for a variety of reasons and as a resident I will be hugely disappointed if the fortunes of the town generally do not improve. Royston is a great place to live and it needs the market to be successful. You will find me on the market from 8 am every Wednesday and Saturday and I would welcome any views customers may want to share regarding its future direction.”

The War Memorial gets a revamp Royston’s War Memorial has been cleaned up and refurbished, and a special exhibition was put on around it for the Centenary Remembrance Day. The War Memorial in Melbourn Street had suffered erosion to the name plaques. Prior to the First World War Centenary Remembrance Sunday last year, work was undertaken to replace parts of the panels, re-letter existing panels and insert lintels above them to hinder further erosion. New ramps were also put in, and slabs re-pointed and re-laid. This work was funded by generous donations from the Brian Leslie Racher Trust (£20,000), the War Memorials Trust (£1,500), Johnson Matthey (£1,000) and NPK Holdings Ltd (£500). The remainder of the funding came from Royston Town Council (approximately £8,000). In the week leading up to Sunday, 11 November 2018, a special display was erected around the memorial. Two panels flanked the central stonework, holding a plaque each for every man on the memorial. The display was the brainchild of Chris Murphy, Chairman of Royston Royal British Legion, and was fabricated by Jim Bird and his team at Big Day Graphics. The entries were compiled by Michael and Pamela Wright of the ‘What Royston Did Project’. Although most work was complete for the 2018 Remembrance Service, some re-pointing and spotlighting work will be completed when the weather improves.

Royston Town Council 2019-20 budget and plans The Town Council Tax for a “Band D” property has been around £42 per year since 2015. For 2019/20 it will rise from £42.53 to £47.29, an increase of just under £5 per year. We have made this increase to be able, amongst other items, to get rid of zero-hours contracts, budget more money for managing the ageing trees in our Plantations and provide a £20,000 fund to start improvements and introduce new facilities which we believe will benefit the community. Some projects are already underway. Some we can do ourselves, others will require different sources of funds and some will be in the hands of District and County Councillors who we work closely with. We have a long list which includes bicycle racks on the Market Place, establishing and promoting safe walking/jogging trails, a new bandstand/amphitheatre for Priory Memorial Gardens, securing the future of the Picture Palace, a disabled parking bay in the High Street, the A505 pedestrian/cycle crossing and many more. Your views are important to us and we will be consulting with you on what should take priority. Royston Town Council has always been fiscally prudent. Compare Royston’s “Band D” with the 2018-19 figures for the small parishes of Ashwell £74.20, Barkway £95.78 and larger towns of Codicote £64.02 and Knebworth £73.44. This budget is the first from your new Town Council elected in May last year. We will continue to manage and use your money with care. Royston is a great place to live. We can make small improvements ourselves and work with the District and County Councils to secure the bigger projects to benefit all our residents.

Business Profile

50 years of Greneway School

Antony Vaughan, Owner of AV Home Improvements & Handyman Services first started the business with his wife Deb, as he have never enjoyed the 9-5 office life.

Everybody’s lives seem to be full of never ending to do lists and there are never enough hours in the day to do them! Well, Antony is here to help you get through some of your to do lists.

After transforming his first flat many years ago, then tackling a complete refurbishment of a three bedroom house, he discovered he had a natural talent for renovation!

How does it work? Either give him a call or visit his website and fill out the contact form.

Friends would come round to see the new house, in awe of what he had achieved and many suggested he set up a business and do this as a full time job. Antony then decided to dedicate his time to learning and developing the necessary trade skills, such as tiling, plastering, carpentry, decorating. Once he had perfected his technique he set up his own business.

Think Garden, Think Richard Materials For A Purpose... Edging Products Melbourn garden designer, Richard Arnott Continuing my new series of articles for 2019, materials for a purpose, I am going to be discussing how best to choose the right Materials For Your Desired Purpose and how they best fit into the design of a space. This month I want to investigate edging products. Mowing strips are a great way to reduce the maintenance of your lawn and can be used very effectively to make a prescribed shape in a garden design. Traditionally mowing strips have been made of engineering bricks and can be laid to suit the shape. Rectilinear shapes lend themselves to stretcher course, and curves to header but it depends on the look you want. I like an old style red brick paver when I design a mowing strip for an older property, granite and sandstone setts look good too. It is important that the material used links in some way to the exiting materials in the garden, the property or proposed other new materials. A garden can soon become very busy looking with the use of lots of differing materials and colours that do not relate to each other. The strip not only keeps a good shape to a lawn but it prevents other materials such as planting or mulch migrating. Many traditional herbaceous borders in National Trust gardens will have a strip of paving in front for viewing the border but this is another way of achieving the mowing strip as well as providing somewhere to stand.

Definition between materials is a strong reason for needing to use edging in garden design. When you set out to design a garden space of any size there is the need to exercise control over the space, make some shape on the ground. For shape to be clear having a defined edge to work from is key. Edging in its many forms can provide this and good designers will pick the edging to complement the style of their design. Metal edging is good and over the years I have used many different types that slot or clip together. This is a cost effective way of constructing a metal edge and because they come in long lengths can be used to form great curves in my designs. Timber is good for definition too but be aware that it does not have the longevity of steel. Material contrast is a great way to make a statement in garden design. Often we strive for harmony and cohesion in a designed space, whether it be a new kitchen, bathroom, living room or garden. Using strong contrast can give a very different feel to a space, but keep your colour palette simple. For example a very contemporary courtyard garden could have slate paving on the ground edged with white gravel pieces to make a strong contrasting colour statement about the space. This will command your attention and draw the eye. A softer way to contrast materials could be sandstone paving as the edge and washed Caledonian cobbles as a mulch in a minimal gravel with ornamental grasses garden. How you decide to contrast your edging materials is very dependent on the style of space you want to achieve.

stones of the same paving could continue in gravel pieces to mark the gentle transition. The use of long strips of paving in gravel has become very popular and is a great way to make the gentle transition. The stone planks work well to indicate change of direction on the ground too. Think of them as stripes, laid width ways they will make the space feel wider and length ways longer and thinner. For more in depth advice or garden design help please get in touch to arrange a consultation.

Although my Mum is really easy to buy for, I always find it hard on Mother’s Day to find something to really tell her how much I love her and appreciate everything she does. She is the most supportive person so I know she’ll read this so I can’t say too much. But I have definitely visited the Corn Exchange shops and there may be flowers from somewhere in town going her way.

Royston Runners It is marathon season and there are lots of Royston Runners training for upcoming events. Sunday 3rd March is the Cambridge Half Marathon. This is a very popular local race and we have a large team taking part. There will be plenty of supporters along the route as well as the official Royston Runner cheering spot at mile 7! Over the next few months you might spot large groups of runners out early on a Saturday and Sunday morning getting the long training runs in. Sunday 10th February saw the final fixture of the Herts Sunday League Cross Country Championships hosted by Royston Runners at Therfield Heath. With Royston in contention for the league title closely pursued by Trent Park, home turf was certainly an advantage. In true cross-country fashion, conditions were testing; mud and driving rain in addition to the hills of the heath proved too much for the visiting clubs.

For the first time in the history of Royston Runners, the hosts were awarded both Women’s A&B team titles as well as the overall Men and Women Combined trophy. The women’s performance was particularly remarkable given the ninth placed position last year! The men narrowly missed out on the winners’ trophy despite clinching 5 out of the 10 top spots on the day. Royston’s home success was a product of teamwork- from the gritty runners to the hardy, enthusiastic and motivating marshals, it really was a whole club event! Credit also goes to the race director, and supporters, as well as the Heath Cafe Bar for hosting the league presentation. www.roystonrunners.co.uk

Looking After you “Tidy House, Tidy Mind”

does it serve a purpose? Does it bring you joy? I held a cake mixer in my hands that my Gran gave me when I moved out of my parents’ home seven years ago and realised that I have never made a cake and that was the start. I am still making my way through this journey but I can say my house and importantly my mind have a lot more space. I also have more time to do the things I enjoy. The benefits of a minimal life is never ending, but the ones I have noticed in myself, a sense of freedom from being overwhelmed, rid myself of excess stuff, and my favourite one the freedom from the consumer culture that we see so regularly. So take one small space at a time and see how your mind can feel so much happier.

We’ve all heard the saying; Tidy House, Tidy Mind. But how true is it? Well in my experience very true. My most recent obsession is minimalism. I watched the Netflix documentary “Minimalism” and I could feel it changing my life as I watched clean, clutter free spaces move along the TV screen. I have always considered myself tidy, and having a complete clear out wasn’t unusual but this time I had a different perspective. Minimalism isn’t just about having less stuff, studies have shown that is can be a way to combat mental illness, by having fewer things to distract or trigger you, your mental health can be positively affected. Minimalism gives you more freedom. Say what? I know, I was the same at first but I began the complete overhaul in my very tiny kitchen with the idea that surely I won’t have much to release from the cupboards. But as I went along and followed KIM FLETCHER www.kimfletcheryoga.com the two questions to ask whilst creating that pathway to freedom,

Home-Start Matters Calling all swimmers for the Home-Start and South Cambridgeshire Aquathon This year Home-Start Royston and South Cambridgeshire is trying to make their annual Aquathon the biggest one yet and are calling on local clubs and organisations to help them make an ever bigger splash this year. The annual event, which has traditionally been held in partnership with local schools, is now being opened up to other local organisations keen to kick start their fundraising. This joint fundraiser is the perfect opportunity for local organisations to raise funds, and all without the hassle as Home-Start Royston and South Cambridge do all the heavy lifting. The event, which will be held at the Royston Leisure Centre is organised entirely by local family support charity Home-Start Royston and South Cambridgeshire.

Participants are invited to contribute teams of six for a fun 55 minute relay swim, and the great news is that participants can walk away with 50% of the sponsorship they raise, while the remaining 50% goes to support Home-Start’s vital work with local families in crisis. Places at the Aquathon are limited, so if you would like to get involved and raise money for your club, whilst also supporting local families, contact Home-Start Royston and South Cambridgeshire for an application form. We’ve Always Done Business This Way

Decades ago, I spent a holiday based in a granite farmhouse on the edge of Dartmoor, with nothing to read except old copies of the Readers’ Digest. I still remember one of the reader’s letters – and it went something like this: At an army base, the day before the big Passing Out Parade, everyone was hard at work sprucing up the base for the following day’s guests. The letter writer, as a young recruit, was painting kerb stones white by the Gatehouse when he accidentally knocked over his pot of paint. He quickly picked it up, but not before a large puddle had sloshed onto the road. He couldn’t wipe it up and, with the parade being the very next day, he had very little time to think of a solution. Our resourceful recruit decided that, as he couldn’t clear it up, the least he could do would be to make it look smart, so he decided to paint his puddle into a large, regular rectangle on the road. Amazingly, no-one said a word,

and the next day’s parade passed without a hitch. Several years later, our recruit – now a seasoned veteran, returned to the base as a guest of honour at a passing out parade of that year’s officer hopefuls. Imagine his surprise as he drove up to the Gatehouse – not only was the white square still there, but a new recruit was diligently touching up the paintwork ready for the big day! I tell this story to business managers who resist change with the line, ‘We’ve always done things this way! Never be afraid to question why you do things this way? At the very least it might free up some valuable resources but, you never know, it might be the vital question that keeps you in business – just ask Nokia, Blockbuster Video, PanAm, Kodak, MySpace, Woolworths, need I go on?
