Thriplow Daffodil Weekend
Every year, up to 14,000 people visit Thriplow to experience the warm and friendly atmosphere of our Daffodil Weekend charity fund raising event. This year the nominated charity is the Rosie Maternity Unit at Addenbrookes Charitable Trust who are raising funds for essential equipment needed by the Acute Neonatal Transport Service and the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, to help support newborn and vulnerable babies across the East of England. Over two days, visitors walk the car free village to look at the 100 daffodil varieties on display, visit the attractions and open gardens, potter around the stalls, take refreshment in the tea rooms serving homemade cakes and sandwiches, or eat delicious hot food while listening to live music. For months beforehand and over the weekend itself, virtually everyone in the village (and many neighbouring villagers) volunteer to help organise the event – be it baking cakes, helping serve teas, working in the car park or picking up litter at the end of the day. Every year, the exceptional Thriplow community works hard to pull off one of the best loved charity events in Cambridgeshire. History Thriplow Daffodil Weekend started in 1969 when the church needed major roof repairs. Residents decided to raise funds by opening their gardens and making cups of tea for their visitors. They made
an amazing £206 and were so delighted they decided to do it all again the following year – and so the Thriplow Daffodil Weekend was born. Raising funds for charity Thriplow Daffodil Weekend have now raised money for local charities to a total of £560,000 over 50 years. The tireless work of the village was recognised in 2011 when the Committee received The Queens Award for Voluntary Service (the equivalent of an MBE for charities). Daffodils Each year, the village has planted more daffodils of both early and late varieties, to try and ensure they are prepared for most things the weather can throw at them. They now have over half a million daffodils planted in the village, and around 100 different varieties on show including a new variety of narcissus dedicated to us called Thriplow Gold. Barley pub to reopen following £1,000,000 investment Dating back as far as the 17th century, the Grade II listed pub has been closed since 2012, but was acquired last year by childhood friends Robin Skidmore and property developer, Colin Blundell, who is now overseeing the development of the building. The new establishment will create around 20 jobs in the local area, with the team already looking to recruit kitchen, waiting and cleaning staff. The Fox and Hounds, located on High Street, is due to reopen to the public in early April.

St John The Baptist Church Update The emergency phase of restoration is almost complete. As everyone in the area will have seen, the church is encased in extensive scaffolding and waterproof covers. Inside the tower there is a wooden platform below the bells which will prevent them from falling, and has allowed specialists to examine the bells. All eight bells are damaged so they will have to be removed for repair, before being re-tuned and replaced.
Planning for salvage of the church contents is underway, and an archaeologist will be visiting soon to survey the building and ground inside the church. We would like to thank the people of Royston and beyond for their continued kind messages of support and amazing generosity. At a recent church service in Greneway school, Lorraine Miller presented a cheque for £1806.57 after she had set up an online donation page very soon after the fire. Our thanks go to Lorraine and the generous people of Royston. If you wish to support the Church financially, you can donate at

Although my Mum is really easy to buy for, I always find it hard on Mother’s Day to find something to really tell her how much I love her and appreciate everything she does. She is the most supportive person so I know she’ll read this so I can’t say too much. But I have definitely visited the Corn Exchange shops and there may be flowers from somewhere in town going her way.

Hidden Royston
Off-screen at the Picture Palace The Oscars are over for another a year; winners and losers have supped champagne and sobbed into designer hankies in equal measure. Back in the real world - 5,400 miles from Hollywood - an afternoon with cinema manager Geraint Burnell confirms it’s not just the actors, directors and producers that bring films to audience; it’s a very long chain of people – the last link in Royston being the volunteer stewards who meet and show you to your seats.
of the past year – what would the list look like? In no particular order Royston’s favourite films were: Paddington 2; Mamma Mia!; Finding Your Feet; Darkest Hour; Bohemian Rhapsody. But what came top?* What are the ingredients for a hit with Royston film-goers I ask Geraint? “Feel-good, Britishfocus, home-grown, well-known acting talent” he says, adding quickly “but we think we know what people will like, and then they go and surprise us – in good and bad ways!” For ‘behind the scenes’ facts and figures, including the 1 – 5 Picture Palace films for 2018, go to:

AnTony Vaughan Antony Vaughan is the proud local owner of AV Home Improvement & Handyman Services. A local tradesman that offers a friendly and professional variety of trades including tiling, plaster repair and most general handyman work. Have a read and find out more about the man behind the business: Where do you live? Royston with my wife, our two boys and Dudley our dog What do you do to make end meet? I run my own Home Improvement and Handyman Service What do you love about your work? The diversity of the the work I do, problem solving and getting the best for my clients. Also the joy of using my grey matter as well as getting a work out at the same time! What’s your favourite local place to eat? The King William in Chishill and The Thai Rack. Our family favourite is the Jolly Postie - sitting inside the post van, my kids love it. And a special place for me and my wife is the Sheene Mill as it’s where we got married, the food is outstanding. What is your favourite way to spend a Saturday? Out with my family and the dog getting muddy, walking in the woods or getting sandy by the sea at our fav beach in Suffolk. Most memorable Royston experiences? Walking around the town at the Royston Arts festival
entertaining people of all ages dressed as Chewbacca and a Stormtrooper from Star Wars. I thoroughly enjoyed the opportunity to do it in my home town.
‘In Royston, a galaxy not so far away’ How do you relax? I build film costumes, you may have see me at the Arts Festival. I find it very therapeutic building them, researching how to do it and learning new ways of painting or building the props. A Star Wars costume group I’m part of “Vaders Raiders” also raises money for various charities. It’s great to see the smiles, the reactions and the joy on people’s faces. What has been the most valuable life lesson that you have learnt? Never judge a book by its cover. It’s never the ones you expect to be kind hearted, regardless of the way they dress or look. Four people you would invite to dinner… My Dad, who passed away when I was young x, my Wife and our two boys, even if just for a minute. I wished they could have met the kindest, most intelligent, funniest, generous and greatest man I’ve ever known. American Style Pancakes stick pans shouldn’t need any Hello my fellow foodies... Non additional oil but add a tiny amount if and welcome to another bright and shiny edition of The Listing. As Easter falls late this year Shrove Tuesday falls in March so I thought I would share with you a slightly different version of a pancake recipe. This one is not only simple and easy to make but it uses oats so it is naturally gluten free and also rather tasty! American Style Breakfast Pancakes (Gluten free version.) • 2 eggs from happy free running hens • 40g oats • Finely grated zest of one orange • 40g fat free natural yogurt • 1/2 tsp of baking powder • 4 drops of vanilla essence • 50g quark ( fat free soft cheese) • 200g raspberries (I used frozen but fresh would work just as well) • Sugar to taste Let’s begin by blitzing the oats until they take on the consistency of wholemeal flour, then add them to the beaten eggs, yogurt, orange zest, vanilla essence and baking powder and stir until all ingredients are thoroughly combined. Leave this to rest for 10 to 15 minutes. The oats will absorb some of the liquid making the batter thicker . While this is resting you can prepare the filling. Choose the best whole raspberries and set them aside. Mix the broken pieces of raspberries into the quark adding a sprinkling of sugar to taste if you have a sweet tooth, but take care not to over mix - you are only aiming to combine the ingredients- over mixing may make the quark flatten and runny. Store this in the fridge until you are ready to serve. Now, just like traditional pancakes, heat up your best non stick pan. To test if it is ready pour a drop of the batter into the pan and it should “sizzle” and cook straight away. 22
sticking occurs. Simply pour the required amount of batter into the pan to give you the size pancakes you require. Top Tip- While pouring the batter, tilt the pan to move the batter around to encourage a thinner pancake. As the mixture cooks the base of the pancake will become less translucent and bubbles will form. Turn the pancake when they have a light golden browned colour on their base. I made 14 mini sized (5 cm) pancakes from this amount of batter. Once you have cooked all the batter simple construct your tower by smoothing a small dollop of raspberry quark onto a pancake, top with raspberries then another pancake and repeat as long as your nerve holds or until you run out of the components! These are also delicious made with chopped peacan nuts and served with maple syrup, or substitute the orange zest for lemon zest and while the batter is cooking drop in a few blueberries. For those with a more savoury palette add some chopped herbs and/or a sprinkling of parmesan cheese to the batter and serve with garlic mushrooms and grilled tomatoes for an alternative breakfast. I’d love to hear about your creations. Until next time dear reader...

Royston & District Local History Society Our February lecture was, Samuel Ryder by Penny Thea.
Born in 1858 one of eight, Samuel joined his father’s market gardening business. Aged 32, he married Helen, they had three daughters. Noticing that the public could not afford seeds, decided to sell penny packets of seed by mail order. The business grew and moved to larger premises, allowing the family to move into a larger house. In 1903 he became town mayor. He was suffering from ill-health. He was recommended fresh air and a round of golf and became a competent player. He wanted to challenge the Americans and give the Brits a chance. His efforts were rewarded when he donated a gold cup for the first official Ryder Cup match in 1927.

Materials For A Purpose... Edging Products Melbourn garden designer, Richard Arnott
Continuing my new series of articles for 2019, materials for a purpose, I am going to be discussing how best to choose the right Materials For Your Desired Purpose and how they best fit into the design of a space. This month I want to investigate edging products. Mowing strips are a great way to reduce the maintenance of your lawn and can be used very effectively to make a prescribed shape in a garden design. Traditionally mowing strips have been made of engineering bricks and can be laid to suit the shape. Rectilinear shapes lend themselves to stretcher course, and curves to header but it depends on the look you want. I like an old style red brick paver when I design a mowing strip for an older property, granite and sandstone setts look good too. It is important that the material used links in some way to the exiting materials in the garden, the property or proposed other new materials. A garden can soon become very busy looking with the use of lots of differing materials and colours that do not relate to each other. The strip not only keeps a good shape to a lawn but it prevents other materials such as planting or mulch migrating. Many traditional herbaceous borders in National Trust gardens will have a strip of paving in front for viewing the border but this is another way of achieving the mowing strip as well as providing somewhere to stand. Definition between materials is a strong reason for needing to use edging in garden design. When you set out to design a garden space of any size there is the need to exercise control over the space, make some shape on the ground. For shape to be clear having a defined edge to work from is key. Edging in its many forms can provide this and good designers will pick the edging to complement the style of their design. Metal edging is good and over the years I have used many different types that slot or clip together. This is a cost effective way of constructing a metal edge and because they come in long lengths can be used to form great curves in my designs. Timber is good for definition too but be aware that it does not have the longevity of steel. Material contrast is a great way to make a statement in garden design. Often we strive for harmony and cohesion in a designed space, whether it be a new kitchen, bathroom, living room or garden. Using strong contrast can give a very different feel to a space, but keep your colour palette simple. For example a very contemporary courtyard garden could have slate paving on the ground edged with white
30
gravel pieces to make a strong contrasting colour statement about the space. This will command your attention and draw the eye. A softer way to contrast materials could be sandstone paving as the edge and washed Caledonian cobbles as a mulch in a minimal gravel with ornamental grasses garden. How you decide to contrast your edging materials is very dependent on the style of space you want to achieve. Transition points are very important in the garden as they mark movement from one space to the next. An abrupt change from one material to another will work but sometimes it is good to be more subtle. Solid paving could stop forming the edge and stepping stones of the same paving could continue in gravel pieces to mark the gentle transition. The use of long strips of paving in gravel has become very popular and is a great way to make the gentle transition. The stone planks work well to indicate change of direction on the ground too. Think of them as stripes, laid width ways they will make the space feel wider and length ways longer and thinner. For more in depth advice or garden design help please get in touch to arrange a consultation.

Villages around royston - Exhibition Last year a small group of WaterAid volunteers looked at the period before piped water arrived in the villages around Royston in the 1930’s. With assistance from staff members of Cambridge Central Library, Royston Library and Royston Museum we drew on maps, published accounts, and extracts from taperecorded oral histories. The result is our free to borrow “Villages Here & Villages There” Exhibition. It comprises illustrated vertical stands and free-standing panels. They display photographs and detailed accounts of water-cart deliveries, water stand pipes, “night soil men” going about their work, and the use of chamber pots and garden “privies” in Royston’s nearby villages: HERE. These important historic images and accounts - including original objects - are available free to borrow by local schools or groups. They stand in the exhibition
alongside images of WaterAid’s vital work in desperately poor villages THERE across the world. Royston’s Town Mayor Councillor Iain Leggett very kindly launched this ‘Villages Here & Villages There’ Exhibition recently in Royston Museum. It is in the Museum until Saturday 16th March available to be visited free during Museum opening hours. Some highly unique “experience” raffle prizes are listed there to be won. At 11am on Saturday 16th March Tim Baker, Principal Hydrogeologist and Managing Director, B.A. Hydro Solutions Ltd based in Shepreth will give a related talk with Q & A at the Museum. Free admission. All welcome. www.roystonmuseum.org.uk For information about borrowing Exhibition: 01763 260253 or email h.m.pollock@gmail.com

Home & Garden NEWS FROM OUR CLUBS & SOCIETIES... Royston and the surrounding villages are a hive of activity. We are incredibly fortunate to have a wealth of clubs and societies within our town and villages.Since its launch in 2005, The Listing has been proud to support the very many clubs and societies.
Royston u3a New Year New Venue Royston U3A has moved to the Town Hall for monthly meetings following the devastating fire at the parish church. More than 170 members attended our first meeting at the new venue and chairman Jackie Gellert thanked Steve the caretaker for setting everything up - sound system, screen and seating. Heraldry expert Chloe Cockerill gave an absorbing talk on heraldry at the packed meeting. The next monthly meeting will be on March 26th at 2pm in the Town Hall with a talk on the amazing history of lighthouses with Mark Lewis. Doors open at 1.30pm. Rotary Round-Up
The highlight of our March programme will be Youth Makes Music, our annual showcase for the amazing musical talent to be found in our schools. An extra treat this year is that for the first time YMM is moving to the internationally celebrated Saffron Hall. Fired by the thrill of appearing on the same stage as many professional orchestras and artistes, we’re sure the children will pull out all the stops. In February we were delighted to make a donation of £2,500 from the funds raised by the Swimathon in October. The money went to Stand-by-me, the charity for bereaved children in North Herts. www.roystonrotary.com
We maintain and publish a comprehensive list of all the organisations, clubs and societies in Royston and the surrounding villages on our website:

Buried lakes beneath the Antarctic icecap, a lack of moisture and the existence of fur seals, were some of the strange facts learnt from Rodney Tibbs at this month’s meeting. He shared a photographic record of his journey with the British Antartic Survey team via the Falkland Islands and South Georgia to a summer in Antartica. Colourful shots of very English style gardens in Port Stanley contrasted with photographs of giant icebergs and various species of penguin. An entertaining talk of a part of the world which few are able to visit.’ A warm welcome awaits you at our next meeting 6th March at 2pm The Heritage Hall, Royston Town Hall

Home-Start Matters This year Home-Start Royston and South Cambridgeshire is trying to make their annual Aquathon the biggest one yet. This joint fundraiser is an opportunity for local organisations to raise funds, and all without the hassle as Home-Start do all the heavy lifting. The event will be held at the Royston Leisure Centre in May. Participants are invited to contribute teams of six for a fun 55 minute relay swim, and the great news is that participants can walk away with 50% of the sponsorship they raise, while the remaining 50% goes to support HomeStart’s vital work Places at the Aquathon are limited, so if you would like to get involved and raise money for your club contact Home-Start Royston and South Cambridgeshire 01763 262262 admin@hsrsc.org.uk

Professional We’ve Always Done Business This Way Decades ago, I spent a holiday based in a granite farmhouse on the edge of Dartmoor, with nothing to read except old copies of the Readers’ Digest. I still remember one of the reader’s letters – and it went something like this: At an army base, the day before the big Passing Out Parade, everyone was hard at work sprucing up the base for the following day’s guests. The letter writer, as a young recruit, was painting kerb stones white by the Gatehouse when he accidentally knocked over his pot of paint. He quickly picked it up, but not before a large puddle had sloshed onto the road. He couldn’t wipe it up and, with the parade being the very next day, he had very little time to think of a solution. Our resourceful recruit decided that, as he couldn’t clear it up, the least he could do would be to make it look smart, so he decided to paint his puddle into a large, regular rectangle on the road. Amazingly, no-one said a word, and the next
day’s parade passed without a hitch. Several years later, our recruit – now a seasoned veteran, returned to the base as a guest of honour at a passing out parade of that year’s officer hopefuls. Imagine his surprise as he drove up to the Gatehouse – not only was the white square still there, but a new recruit was diligently touching up the paintwork ready for the big day! I tell this story to business managers who resist change with the line, ‘We’ve always done things this way! Never be afraid to question why you do things this way? At the very least it might free up some valuable resources but, you never know, it might be the vital question that keeps you in business – just ask Nokia, Blockbuster Video, PanAm, Kodak, MySpace, Woolworths, need I go on?

Royston Choral Society
As many local people know, Royston Choral Society has been based in the Parish Church since it first started over 40 years ago. Most concerts are performed there and nearly all rehearsals take place there too. Our next concert scheduled for 6th April and the Bach concert is booked for beautiful Ashwell Parish Church. Our summer concert will be in Barkway Parish Church as planned. Meanwhile we wish our Royston Parish Church hosts well and will be planning a fundraising event to support them.
