But that all changed Fancy spending some time in the fresh air and getting more time outdoors?

Melbourn Community Allotment meets 10am-12pm every Friday (weather permitting) at the Moor allotments. Helpers get lots of fresh air, gentle exercise, and produce to take home. wi pm Royston WI pm meet on the second Thursday of each month in Fellowship Hall next to the Picture Palace. We are a friendly welcoming group of women from varied backgrounds and with a wide variety of interests. We meet regularly to discuss books, learn ukulele, take country rambles and enjoy lunch together. We also organise visits to theatres and places of interest as well as social events like coffee mornings. We are entertained and informed by professional speakers and in June local author Sarah Harrison will be with us. Try your writing skills in our fun limerick competition. On the last Sunday in April we had a coach trip to Paradise Wildlife Park. We were able to see lots of animals and could only marvel at the new addition of the Dinosaur Park. These remarkable exhibits were very lifelike and we were quite spellbound by them. Coming up in the next few months we have trips to the Nene Valley Railway and Cromer.

when she became the wife of colonial officer Patrick Reardon and embarked on a life in Africa in the dying days of Empire. She recorded her amazing experiences and challenges she faced in letters, diaries and photographs - and in her early nineties wrote the book An Unexpected Journey with her daughter Kate Armstrong and granddaughter Phyllis. Kate gave us a fascinating glimpse into Margaret’s life and said it has been a privilege to highlight her mother’s deep sense of duty and love for the work she helped her husband carry out. My dad likes nothing more than to be busy in his garden, keeping the grass / flowers and greenhouse maintained (imagine his face if I did this to his grass – the best present of all!) and his new-found love of his self-built outdoor fishpond! Control of invasive species Last year, the volunteers spent time pulling up ragwort and no doubt it will need doing again. In addition, this year we have been implementing measures to control the spread of rape, cow parsley and tor grass on the site. While none of these are without benefits to some wildlife, all of them can become quickly out of hand. The Police and Fire Services have now ruled out arson as the cause of the fire of 9th December 2018. We may never know the cause. The bells have been inspected, and unfortunately almost all are cracked and will probably need recasting. The memorial book is unscathed and a suitable accessible location has now been found. It can be viewed at the offices of Newlings of Royston in Fish Hill and we are most grateful for their help and support. Bakers of Danbury have been awarded an “Enabling Works” contract to clear all debris and non-recoverable items and take measures to protect all items of value. They will also erect internal scaffolding to allow inspection of the tower stonework and nave roof timbers, and remove the bells, as well as investigating the areas of subsidence in the floor. These works are expected to occupy most of May and June. Another important decision that will be required is whether to refurbish our existing organ to a good condition for the next few decades, or whether to replace it either with another pipe organ or a digital organ. In the meantime the Church Sunday services have continued to take place with great support

at Greneway School. This has been augmented with other services being held at both Royston Methodist church and the Town Hall - we are most grateful for their continued support at this difficult time. People in the community continue to come forward and express their concern and support within the generosity of their donations towards the Refurbishment Fund which now stands at in excess of £27,000. At the recent May Fayre in Royston great interest was shown at the stand which showed pictures of the inside of the church following the fire. Citizens Advice North Hertfordshire, (we dropped the bureaux in 2013) offers free impartial advice to North Herts and South Cambs residents via drop-in sessions held at Royston Town Hall on Mondays and Wednesdays from 9.30am - 12pm. We also offer appointments at the Melbourn Community Hub, on the first and third Monday morning of every month - which you can book via the hub’s centre manager by calling 01763 263303. Most people have heard of ‘CAB’ - as we used to be known - but don’t realise how we operate. There is a national brand, providing some central support in the form of policies, procedures, and shared systems, but as a legal entity, Citizens Advice North Herts is a completely independent charity with its own board of local trustees.

We provide confidential advice online, over the phone, and in person, for free. Of the people we helped:

Since 2012, when Royston in Blue first created a Wave of Blue across the Heath in late June, we have raised just over £120,000+ for Teenage Cancer Trust.

one of our wards. This service reaches young people who live further away from our wards, providing support in their local hospital or at home.

Every day in the UK around seven teenagers and young adults (aged 13 – 24 years) are diagnosed with cancer and Teenage Cancer Trust is the only UK charity meeting the critical need of these young people who need specialised nursing and emotional support. Right now, we can only help half of young people with cancer with our world-leading nursing.

We’re also exploring other ways to reach more young people, such as through our popular support events and improving our digital support services.

We don’t have enough nurses to help every young person with cancer get the specialised nursing they desperately need: • Without Teenage Cancer Trust’s specialist support young people risk facing cancer isolated and alone, not accessing the specialist emotional support and care they need through their cancer journey. • Teenage Cancer Trust relies 100% on voluntary donations to protect and grow these vital services for young people • We need your support to maintain our 28 outstanding Teenage Cancer Trust Wards (units) in every major Hospital (Principal Treatment Centres) across the UK and fund specialist nursing staff who help run them. • We need to fund our outreach nursing and support service that will provide support to young people not accessing

News from your Town Council – June 2019 All the fun of the Fayre! The Royston annual May Fayre came to town on Monday 6 May this year. Great fun was had by all! Nobody was put off by the grey sky; there was so much to distract from it.

“What a fantastic May Fayre we had! Probably the best yet; so wonderful to see families enjoying an afternoon out.” Mayor Iain Leggett

Attractions included an amateur dog show, historic vehicles, rideable miniature train, fairground rides, the Town Band, Punch and Judy, a circus skills workshop and “Last Man Standing”; a hilarious physical challenge for all the family. As usual, there were many and varied food offerings, including a hog roast, doughnuts, burgers, candy floss and ice cream, and of course a popular bar provided by a local establishment. The day is always a fun way to spend your bank holiday, and a great way to help local charities and groups as well. Local groups with stalls included: the Scouts and Guides, Naturally Royston, Twinning Association, several school Friends groups, dance schools, and fundraisers for various worthy causes. We would like to thank all the caterers, entertainment providers and everyone who came to the day and made it such a success. A big thank you must go to many of those involved, including the May Fayre working group, all volunteers on the day, and our town clerk, Caroline Mills, who really went above and beyond. We are also grateful to McDonalds and Tees Law staff, who kept the park tidy for us.

More toilets now open across the town After the closure of the Cross public toilets in 2017 due to rising costs, the Town Council set up a Community Toilet scheme in collaboration with local businesses. Toilets at The Jolly Postie and The Coach and Horses were opened to the public during the establishments’ opening hours, at no charge to the public and with no obligation to buy anything while there. These businesses receive a small payment from the council to help with maintenance costs of the facilities they provide and display window stickers advertising their participation in the scheme. Building on feedback from the public about the location of these facilities, the Town Council is pleased to welcome the Banyers House to the scheme and, in doing so, to expand the number and accessibility of free toilets for the public across Royston Town Centre. The Council understands that access to toilet facilities is especially important to the elderly, small children, and those with invisible disabilities and hopes that this new venture will encourage these groups to visit the town centre. The Banyers Hotel joined the scheme on 1 March 2019. Public toilets run by North Herts District Council remain open at Fish Hill.

Annual Town Meeting March 2019 Royston Town Council’s Annual Town Meeting took place on Thursday 21 March with reports from the Mayor, Town Centre Manager, Chairmen of Royston Town Council Committees and District and County Councillors. Community Service Awards for 2018/2019 were presented to two of four worthy recipients in recognition of their services to the town. Lindsay Davidson – in recognition of her services to the Royston community over many years as a Town Councillor, volunteer and active member of many committees. Royston and District Community Transport, represented by Brian Johnson – In recognition of 25 years serving the Royston community. The following were unable to attend on the night but awards also went to Susan Thornton-Björk - in recognition of her work as Town Clerk to Royston Town Council from 2006 to 2017. Ben and Beth Chapman – for their work in fund-raising for many local charities. The Town Mayor’s Community Trust Fund grants were also made to deserving local organisations to help with funding for their community projects. There followed an open meeting where councillors welcomed questions from electors. As usual there was lively debate and councillors were keen to respond to any questions posed. There was a fair attendance at the meeting but the Town Council would encourage you to attend what is an informative and collaborative meeting. Mayor of Royston 2019 to 2020 I am honoured and humbled to be asked, once again, to represent our great town as Mayor. I promise to work for the benefit of Royston and its people in this time of change.

Visit to Royston Fire Station As part of their admirable and on-going work within the community, Steve Greaves, the Crew Commander at Royston Fire Station invited Town, District and County Councillors to see our Fire Crews at work and to see what they do as a fire and rescue service. We were treated to training demonstrations using cutting equipment, ladders, hoses and considerable climbing skills in very windy weather! Councillor Ian Coll ‘was volunteered’ to be the driver in a reconstruction of a road traffic accident. We saw how they go about cutting the door off a crashed car and how to get someone out who might have injuries. We also had the opportunity to discuss issues that the Fire Service have in our local area. This proved to be enlightening and informative and as a result actions are being taken by our County and District Councillors to improve matters. The main issue was the growing problem of access for fire engines because of inconsiderately parked cars. We can only appeal to people to think about where and how they park and think about the event of an emergency happening in our roads in and around Royston. Firemen do have the powers to remove obstructing vehicles but this wastes valuable time when out on emergency calls.

I will work hard to give youngsters a say in their future, as sometimes I know they don’t feel they are being listened to. I hope to work with other organisations, looking into forming a Royston Youth Council as this, I believe, would give them a voice in how the town develops in the future. I want to help local businesses achieve their full potential by promoting both them and our town as a leader for enterprise. In doing this I hope that they will also engage with young people to create local jobs for the future. I would also like to help the Royston and District Twinning Association grow and be more recognised. I feel that we need to look at our local environment by changing the way some of us think. It shouldn’t just be about making a profit but also about having a healthy vibrant town and keeping open areas accessible to everyone, no matter what their personal circumstances are. Half of the charity funds raised will go to the Garden House Hospice and half to the Mayor’s Community Trust Fund, which awards grants to worthy local organisations in Royston.

As a result of our visit we went away with a better understanding of everything the service does for our local community.

From Tallulah’s Kitchen Gooseberry Fool Hello my fellow foodies... and welcome to another bright and shiny edition of The Listing.

This month I am hoping for a glut of soft fruit from the garden. In particular I have my eye on the gooseberries bushes and I have my finger crossed for a good harvest this year. In years past crumbles, compote and chutneys have all be well received but Gooseberry Fool is always a firm favourite. This recipe yields four “polite” sized portions, so you will need four individual serving glasses. • • • • • • • • •

250g Fresh Gooseberries (topped and tailed) 20g Caster Sugar 50mls Elderflower Cordial 1 egg yolk from free running, healthy hens 1/2 tsp Cornflour 75ml Milk 1/4 tsp Vanilla Paste 15g Caster Sugar 75ml Double Cream

Let’s begin by cooking the gooseberries in a pan, with the Elderflower Cordial and 20g (or less if you are looking for a sharper flavour) of caster sugar.

Think Garden, Think Richard Materials For A Purpose... Path Products Melbourn garden designer, Richard Arnott

Continuing my series of articles for 2019, Materials For A Purpose, I am going to be discussing how best to choose the right materials for your desired purpose and how they best fit into the design of a space. I want to get you thinking about the options you have and how the right selection can give you a cohesive, timeless solution rather than a predictable, uninspiring result. This month I want to investigate products used for providing shade in the garden. Pergolas are a great way to create shade in the garden. There is no doubt that temperatures are changing and we need to protect ourselves from the sun. Pergolas come in all shapes and sizes but are essentially a structure of timber or metal that you sit under. The structure is then a frame for growing plants. I use them in my designs as shade in outdoor entertaining areas. The key is to match the style of structure to the property. We recently built a lovely green oak, chunky pergola to match the old cottage aesthetic where a metal contemporary structure would have been too modern. Pergolas can be free

standing or attached to the brick work of your property. They also add interest with height and opportunity for climbing plants to thrive such as Wisteria, roses and grape vines, but beware the fruit from grape vines can stain your patio below. Arbour seats are less imposing as a garden feature but can offer smaller spots of shade for the garden. I like to use arbour seats as a focal point in my designs. A feature at the end of a path helps to draw the eye through a space. An arbour seat is simply a seat with sides and a roof over the top and again is a good frame to grow plants onto. The garden centres up and down the land are full of arbour seat choices but if you are remotely practical they are easy to build from scratch too. Storage space under the seat is very welcome in smaller gardens. It is a good way to encourage children out into the garden and can become a reading space. If you have an existing mature tree, tree seats provide a shady resting spot. Sails & retractable blinds have become more popular as shade solutions. Again it is down to context and matching the theme of the outdoor space you want to create. Sails can look great in a seaside themed garden with pebbles, chunky natural rope and seaside planting. Sails are obviously nautical and link well with decking and timber structures, but bear in mind that they will only provide limited shade and are much more of a statement feature in a garden as they are harder to soften with planting. Not only are you providing a solution to your problem but you are helping the environment too. As always it is about choosing the right plant for the right place. I like to use trees that will provide a dappled shade into the garden such as Betula utilis Jacquemontii or Amelanchier lamarckii. Trees are becoming very important in our increasingly small spaces for screening unsightly views and it may be that a full grown tree is not appropriate but multi stemmed versions of the above two are readily available and will not dominate the garden. If space allows then a grander gesture may be appropriate and there are too many choices to mention, but why not choose something different such as a copper beech or a candy floss tree! Don’t wait - Do it Now

Procrastination: that dreadful curse of putting off important things until later. It never helps, but we all do it, even when we know it’s wrong. And we keep trying to justify it to ourselves. Sometimes we do it because the task appears difficult or scary. Maybe we’re hoping that, by putting it off, someone braver or more clever may volunteer? But that hardly ever happens, does it? Sometimes we conceal our procrastination by calling it perfectionism, ‘I can’t call on that prospect until I’ve done just a bit more research’. Yes of course we need to do background work, but don’t get drawn into ‘analysis paralysis’ and use it as an excuse for not actually completing the job. The most common excuse is that we’re too busy. Noone can argue with this one, surely? If that is your excuse, then you need to remind yourself of your business objectives and then reprioritise – decide what really needs
