Welcome

Next Deadline Thursday 13th June

With June comes some beautiful weather (we hope!) and many things to celebrate. Our delicious looking covers remind us that it’s strawberry picking season and Strawberry Fair in Cambridge, which just marks the start of a huge month for Fetes and Fayres. To find out which ones to attend visit our What’s On pages 16-17.

We also have Father’s Day which is our #TLM this month. We have been reminiscing about childhood memories with our wonderful Dads before Sunday 16th of June where we will spend the day treating all the amazing Dads, Grandads, Step Dads and the influential men in our life. Do let us know if you have anything special planned. Finally, don’t forget that Royston In Blue takes place this month so don’t miss your chance to register for a fun filled morning at Therfield Heath.

My Local Life

Loving Local Living

Ivan Titmuss This month our local life is Ivan Titmuss, the proud owner of The Fox and Duck in Therfield, a pub perfect for those who love the countryside, fine food and the warmest of welcomes. Located in the stunning village of Therfield, Hertfordshire, The Fox and Duck is a multi-award winning pub and restaurant that is the centre piece of this community. Situated just three miles from Royston, The Fox and Duck is easily accessible while maintaining its picturesque and tranquil village character. From the rustic charm and open fireplace found in the pub to the scenic village green in front of the pub, this well disguised gastropub is perfect for all. Where do you live? Therfield What’s your favourite local place to eat: The Old Bull Inn for lunch and dinner. The Heath Cafe for breakfast and great coffee and cakes in the afternoon. Favourite shop: Barbara’s Flowers, they supply lovely fresh flowers for the pub. What makes you happy? Bangkok and Ibiza What do you love about your work? Lots of things, getting to know all the villagers in Therfield, it’s like they have taken me under their wing. Seeing and hearing the satisfaction when customers have had a great dining experience in the pub. Working with the most motivated, happy and professional team! Favourite thing to do in Royston? I love Royston Cave and the whole mysterious history behind it. Every time visitors from overseas visit me I take them there; they are always amazed, and I believe it’s historically undervalued. I would love to have applied for the cave guide job if I had more time!

What are you looking forward to most this month? The Fox and Duck’s first beer festival, ‘Foxy Fest’ over the weekend of the 29th and 30th June. On the same day as the Therfield Fete, so much fun to be had in the village that weekend! What is the most challenging aspect of your position? Keeping the business ahead of the game, by always looking to improve our offering and keeping the highest standards of a country pub. What has been the most valuable life lessons that you have learned? That I am still learning! That you get out of life what you put in. That life shouldn’t always be about work, but you need to work hard to get ahead in this world. That’s it’s so easy to get caught up in this way of thinking and we should all try and find a life balance, as soon as possible! Four people you would invite to dinner: Johnny Vegas, Peter Kay, John Wayne and Sara Cox - I want to have fun at the dinner table! What inspirational quote sums you up? Always look on the bright side of life. The Fox and Duck, Therfield, SG8 9PN 01763 287246 info@thefoxandduck.co.uk thefoxandduck.co.uk

Church Update

The Police and Fire Services have now ruled out arson as the cause of the fire of 9th December 2018. We may never know the cause. The bells have been inspected, and unfortunately almost all are cracked and will probably need recasting. The memorial book is unscathed and a suitable accessible location has now been found. It can be viewed at the offices of Newlings of Royston in Fish Hill and we are most grateful for their help and support.

In the meantime the Church Sunday services have continued to take place with great support at Greneway School. This has been augmented with other services being held at both Royston Methodist church and the Town Hall - we are most grateful for their continued support at this difficult time. People in the community continue to come forward and express their concern and support within the generosity of their donations towards the Refurbishment Fund which now stands at in excess of £27,000. At the recent May Fayre in Royston great interest was shown at the stand which showed pictures of the inside of the church following the fire. Many questions were raised about the condition of the church.

Bakers of Danbury have been awarded an “Enabling Works” contract to clear all debris and non-recoverable items and take measures to protect all items of value. They will also erect internal scaffolding to allow inspection of the tower stonework and nave roof timbers, and remove the bells, as well as investigating the areas of subsidence in the floor. These works are expected to occupy most of May and June. Another important decision that will be required is whether to refurbish our existing organ to a If you have any questions, please speak to good condition for the next few decades, or our Church Warden, whether to replace it either with another pipe Nick Hindle: 01763 324325 or Treasurer, organ or a digital organ. Citizens Advice Citizens Advice North Hertfordshire, (we dropped the bureaux in 2013) offers free impartial advice to North Herts and South Cambs residents via drop-in sessions held at Royston Town Hall on Mondays and Wednesdays from 9.30am - 12pm. We also offer appointments at the Melbourn Community Hub, on the first and third Monday morning of every month - which you can book via the hub’s centre manager by calling 01763 263303.

Rosie Waters, Chief Executive and Lecia Fraser, Advice Services and Project Manager

Most people have heard of ‘CAB’ - as we used to be known - but don’t realise how we operate. There is a national brand, providing some central support in the form of policies, procedures, and shared systems, but as a legal entity, Citizens Advice North Herts is a completely independent charity with its own board of local trustees.

Of the people we helped:

We’re entirely reliant upon the grants we receive, those we apply for and generous support from the community.

We’re looking to build relationships with individuals and organisations, so please get in touch if you’d like to know more.

A little bit of background; in 2018/19 Citizens Advice North Herts supported over 5,000 people with 11,500 issues. We have 18 part time members of staff and 73 trained volunteers, most of whom volunteer twice a week. We can all face problems that seem complicated or intimidating. At Citizens Advice, we believe no one should have to face these problems without good quality, independent advice.

Perhaps you work in a company that supports local charities throughout the year, or maybe for one of the larger companies who have a fund that can be applied for. Perhaps you’d be interested in making a small regular donation to support us in our work, or maybe you’re interested in helping us in a volunteer capacity?

We provide confidential advice online, over the phone, and in person, for free.

• 7 in 10 people felt less stressed, depressed or anxious • Nearly 1 in 2 felt their physical health had improved • 3 in 5 found it easier to manage day to day

Business Profile

Art of Flooring

It can be intimidating hiring professionals to do work in your home for you. A quality carpet and flooring company will explain your options, their methods and how they will save you money. How will I be billed for this job? Any professional worth their weight in salt will write out and explain each charge on an itemised list. Art of Flooring lists out the cost of the carpet, the underlay, plus any accessories they need to complete the task such as gripper rods. They will also list the fitting cost per square meter of carpet and then the overall total fitting cost. There will also be a separate section on service costs for floor prep with or without existing floor removal and disposal. You should also discuss furniture removal and replacement when going through the itemised cost list.

How do I know you know what you are doing? Every carpet company should be following the British Standard BS5325 which is the code of practice for installation of textile floor coverings. Someone who is handy around the house or works as a basic contractor therefore may not do the best job. Companies that go above and beyond by getting further training care about having the best information for the job. Art of Flooring has a membership for the Carpet Foundation which offers extra training and extra guarantees which they can pass on to their customers. Tip: Check the company’s website or social media page. They may do a special post about employees that go to extra training! How to ask for references

Check online first. They should have reviews on Google, Facebook, Houzz or TrustPilot. Art of Flooring has a testimonials section on their Tip: You need new gripper rods to hold the website. When asking for examples of their carpet down tight any time you get new work in person, they should have pictures of carpet. Grand re-opening of Great Chishill Windmill There has been a windmill in Chishill since

at least the 16th century. The present one was built in 1819: it is 200 years old but may have failed to reach this if it had not been for the action of a group of villagers. Great Chishill Windmill Trust, leased the mill and set about fundraising for a major restoration. With grants from Historic England and the Society for the Protection of Ancient Buildings and the tremendous generosity of Friends of the Windmill over £130,000 was raised to fund the work.

Hidden Royston

Steps To Success National news about the demise of high street stores is a serious development for thousands of shop staff across the country. The average high street in England and Wales has lost 40 shops in the past five years. Locally in Royston, the recent disappearance of the Stationery Cupboard (albeit for a new life online) is confirmation that jobs in retail are far from secure. It’s refreshing then that at least one business in Royston town centre believes the secret to success is to give their staff five-star support in the belief that they, in turn, will give great service. The management style is also about empowerment – giving the people at the front line the authority to make business decisions (with any above-target sales successes rewarded with bonuses in their pay packets). The company’s exceptional employee

benefits also include a day off on their birthdays and leave to take their child to school on their first day. If staff members marry, the happy couple can use the company limousine, are given a week’s holiday and £100. The company has holiday homes for staff to use. They also train and employ people who may be facing particular barriers to getting jobs. Well, that’s what I’d been told and had read about the company. I set out to find out first-hand whether, particularly given the gloom and doom on high streets across the country, there really could be an employer doing things so differently, and doing it successfully. June 12th will see us hosting Kids Out, where we treat around 100 disadvantaged children to a special day out at Wimpole Hall. The children will benefit from a variety of games and attractions and a nice picnic lunch. From past experience the day is extremely popular with the children. June is also the end of the reign of our current President, David Blundell, and so we will be going to Madingley Hall to enjoy a nice meal where the role will be handed over to Martin Berry. The monthly Memory Café will be held on Monday 10th of June, so if you know of anyone with memory problems please send them with their carer for an enjoyable and stimulating morning, 10.00 to 12.00am at the Old Barn, Upper King Street in Royston, no booking needed.

Home & Garden As always we ask you to News from the conservators June. keep dogs on leads in grazing By the time you read this article we will have had our public meeting at Meridian School with the work due to start on the car park repairs week commencing June 5th. There will be access at all times, & there will be some traffic management, so please be patient. Hopefully the brief inconvenience will be outweighed by the long term benefits. Please remember that as temperatures increase, more people use the site. We all need to be respectful and make sure we don’t impact negatively on others’ enjoyment. There is also a chance that we will get little rain, increasing the risk of fire, so we take this opportunity to remind you not to take BBQs or any naked flame onto the heath and to be careful not to discard any cigarette butts, please. Sheep The sheep are due to return to the heath in

areas and we will keep you up-to-date with their whereabouts via The Listing, the map on the Heath Sports Club, our website and social media. Control of invasive species Last year, the volunteers spent time pulling up ragwort and no doubt it will need doing again. In addition, this year we have been implementing measures to control the spread of rape, cow parsley and tor grass on the site. While none of these are without benefits to some wildlife, all of them can become quickly out of hand. What the site is special for is its chalk grassland species and that is what we always have to bear in mind.

Cambourne wild Festival

This family-friendly music festival is looking to celebrate the community and the Wildlife Trust BCN’s involvement in making it a great place to live and work. The live bands on both days comprise an interesting mix from ska to rock, to young up and coming Cambridge band, Limited Time, to John Verity, who was in Argent. Headline act on Saturday evening are Magic Queen – a tribute band emulating the classic sound of Freddie Mercury, Brian May et al. Saturday features lively dance music, generating an upbeat party mood; Sunday will be a more chilled, relaxed day, with a gospel choir and ukulele band. Local food and drink suppliers plus street food stalls, and the Trust’s own Wild Beer on sale in the beer tent. There will be a funfair and family fun activities.

Pet of the Month

Rubix is a 2 year old lady who had a tough start and was very worried about being handled. Rubix needs an adult only home with a very gentle approach, but once she knows you she loves rubbing around your legs and sitting up with you. An ideal companion for someone wanting a friend to live alongside, Rubix may become more lap friendly over time but currently just wants someone to love her and gain her trust. Tucker & son Fishmongers This month we would like to introduce Royston’s longest standing trader – Tucker and Sons Fishmongers. This family run business has been trading in Royston since 1956 and regular patrons of the market will know Darren and Andy who work on Saturdays and Wednesdays respectively. Making the long journey from Great Yarmouth they provide an enormous variety of fish of the highest quality – which includes Dover Sole, Sea Bass, Halibut, Sea Bream and Salmon to mention just a few. Cromer Crab, Scallops and Squid are also on offer and of course everything is fresh! This very popular stall is located adjacent to Angel Pavement and if you are a lover of fish is really worth a visit. We are sure you will not be disappointed.

Materials For A Purpose... Path Products Melbourn garden designer, Richard Arnott

Continuing my series of articles for 2019, Materials For A Purpose, I am going to be discussing how best to choose the right materials for your desired purpose and how they best fit into the design of a space. I want to get you thinking about the options you have and how the right selection can give you a cohesive, timeless solution rather than a predictable, uninspiring result. This month I want to investigate products used for providing shade in the garden. Pergolas are a great way to create shade in the garden. There is no doubt that temperatures are changing and we need to protect ourselves from the sun. Pergolas come in all shapes and sizes but are essentially a structure of timber or metal that you sit under. The structure is then a frame for growing plants. I use them in my designs as shade in outdoor entertaining areas. The key is to match the style of structure to the property. We recently built a lovely green oak, chunky pergola to match the old cottage aesthetic where a metal contemporary structure would have been too modern. Pergolas can be free standing or attached to the brick work of your property. They also add interest with height and opportunity for climbing plants to thrive such as Wisteria, roses and grape vines, but beware the fruit from grape vines can stain your patio below. Arbour seats are less imposing as a garden feature but can offer smaller spots of shade for the garden. I like to use arbour seats as a focal point in my designs. A feature at the end of a path helps to draw the eye through a space. An arbour seat is simply a seat with sides and a roof over the top and again is a good frame to grow plants onto. The garden centres up and down the land are full of arbour seat choices but if you are remotely practical they are easy to build from scratch too. Storage space under the seat is very welcome in smaller gardens. It is a good way to encourage children out into the garden and can become a reading space. If you have an existing mature tree, tree seats provide a shady resting spot. Sails & retractable blinds have become more popular as shade solutions. Again it is down to context and matching the theme of the outdoor space you want to create. Sails can look great in a seaside themed garden with pebbles, chunky natural rope and seaside planting. Sails are obviously nautical and link well with decking and timber structures, but bear in mind that they will only provide limited shade and are much more of a statement feature in a garden as they are harder to soften with planting. Retractable blinds can be useful off the back of a house to

give protection from the sun, but beware the cheap and cheerful options as they can look very municipal. I have found over the years of designing gardens that the simple solutions are usually the best. On a pergola we designed and built one year, a simple strained metal wire allowed us to install a material shade that could be drawn across the roof like a curtain when the sun was too hot. When not in use it concertinaed up neatly and looked good. Planting a tree is a pleasing way to resolve shade issues. Not only are you providing a solution to your problem but you are helping the environment too. As always it is about choosing the right plant for the right place. I like to use trees that will provide a dappled shade into the garden such as Betula utilis Jacquemontii or Amelanchier lamarckii. Trees are becoming very important in our increasingly small spaces for screening unsightly views and it may be that a full grown tree is not appropriate but multi stemmed versions of the above two are readily available and will not dominate the garden. If space allows then a grander gesture may be appropriate and there are too many choices to mention, but why not choose something different such as a copper beech or a candy floss tree!

Father’s Day takes place in June and we hope for some good weather to celebrate. Many of the events in June remind me of some of my childhood memories with my Dad. Royston in Blue being one where even at a young age Dad was keen on us taking part, even if it meant pushing my sister round in a pram one year! We also as a family have had many trips down to the seaside so perhaps that will be on the cards for Father’s Day, and if not maybe The Beach @ Bury Lane will be close enough!

Royston U3A When Margaret Reardon got married the furthest she had travelled from Cambridge was a trip to Southwold. But that all changed when she became the wife of colonial officer Patrick Reardon and embarked on a life in Africa in the dying days of Empire. She recorded her amazing experiences and challenges she faced in letters, diaries and photographs - and in her early nineties wrote the book An Unexpected Journey with her daughter Kate Armstrong and granddaughter Phyllis. Kate gave us a fascinating glimpse into Margaret’s life and said it has been a privilege to highlight her mother’s deep sense of duty and love for the work she helped her husband carry out. sharon mentions.. Our mentions this month focus on Father’s Day, all our dads are the best Superheroes and make us feel proud like we do them! My dad likes nothing more than to be busy in his garden, keeping the grass / flowers and greenhouse maintained (imagine his face if I did this to his grass – the best present of all!) and his new-found love of his self-built outdoor fishpond! As a child I always remember him talking about his love of historical vehicles and still has a collector’s late 1950’s Land Rover stored- away, this month with so many historical car shows a trip out to see and meet some of the owners is planned along with a trip to an outdoor aquarium to maybe inspire a few ideas and a possible Father’s Day fish or gnome for something a bit different…

becoming Dementia Friends and are now taking it further by rolling out across their businesses small changes that make life better or more inclusive for anyone with dementia. Sam Adby from Margaret House, who is leading the group said “I have seen how well these communities are working in other areas and the difference they are making to people’s lives. We really hope that other businesses and community groups will join us so that the initiative can be expanded to cover as much of Royston as possible so that we create a community where people with dementia feel engaged and valued.”

In a dementia-friendly community people will be aware of and understand dementia, so that people with dementia can continue to live in a way they want to and in the community they choose. Too many people affected by dementia feel society fails to understand the condition they live with, its impact or how to interact with them. That’s why people with dementia sometimes feel they need to withdraw from their community as the condition progresses. In fact, over a third of people with dementia have said that they have felt lonely recently and a number of For more information please email sam@ carers said they felt ‘cut off from society’ too. margarethouse.co.uk, for more information on RBN visit www.roystonbusinessnetwork.co.uk The group, which comprises a range of local and to find out more about Dementia Friendly businesses who meet weekly at The Heath, Communities visit www.alzheimers.org.uk/.../ have taken the first steps to improve this by dementia-friendly-communities

what really needs doing.

Procrastination: that dreadful curse of putting off important things until later. It never helps, but we all do it, even when we know it’s wrong. And we keep trying to justify it to ourselves. Sometimes we do it because the task appears difficult or scary. Maybe we’re hoping that, by putting it off, someone braver or more clever may volunteer? But that hardly ever happens, does it? Sometimes we conceal our procrastination by calling it perfectionism, ‘I can’t call on that prospect until I’ve done just a bit more research’. Yes of course we need to do background work, but don’t get drawn into ‘analysis paralysis’ and use it as an excuse for not actually completing the job. The most common excuse is that we’re too busy. No-one can argue with this one, surely? If that is your excuse, then you need to remind yourself of your business objectives and then reprioritise – decide

If a task is worth doing, do it now. Now that doesn’t mean charge at everything like a bull at a gate, but once you’ve decided it’s the right thing to do, put it into your diary and get it done! By doing things on time, you get to feel the benefits sooner, your brain is less cluttered for other tasks, and it can do wonders for your self-esteem! The last word must go to one of my favourite pieces of graffiti: ‘If I procrastinate today instead of tomorrow, would that be called progress?’ So there you have it. If you’re looking for the magic bullet, that one thing that will give you the edge over your competitors, you could do a lot worse than stop procrastinating. And do it today! julian@julianberry.co.uk
