We’re excited about the all-new event for the Royston calendar this year; the Historical Pageant, which promises to recreate medieval life in the Priory Memorial Gardens. You are invited to dress in costume and join the procession from the Royse Stone, enjoy a medieval reenactment group and try your hand at archery, plus much more. Melbourn Community Allotment was an overgrown mess just two years ago - and thanks to the work of a few dedicated volunteers, it’s now producing a range of fruit, vegetables and cut flowers. Gardening is proven to provide health and wellbeing benefits, so do get involved and enjoy this wonderful facility - see page 21 for more details.

Royston Arts Festival needs you!

Royston Arts Festival will be taking place from 20th – 29th September. This year’s theme is “Our Planet” and we’re excited to be able unveil the full programme of events. We’re looking for volunteers to help out during the festival – particularly over the weekend of 27th – 29th September, when the programme is at its busiest. It’s a great opportunity to get involved and contribute to a popular fixture in the Royston calendar.

What is this? Like the arrow on the FedEx trademark, we can see some things lots of times but not really see what’s there, until someone points it out. Then we can’t ‘un-see’ it but feel slightly superior that we know what others don’t! That was the case with this ‘wall fitting’ in the centre of Royston. A friend, Dermot Byrne, pointed it out to me; I must have walked past it literally hundreds of times but, I never really noticed it and certainly never thought what it might be. It’s on the corner of the Jolly Postie building, above head height just below the blue plaque. I posted the photo on the ‘Royston Reporting’ Facebook page to find out more and had a brilliant response within an hour. The consensus view is best summed up by Julia Humphreys: “When it was the post office the safe was on the other side of the wall. The hole,

handrail and step were used by the person who came along at different times to look through the hole; to make sure the post office wasn’t being broken into and to check the safe!” Thank you, Julia; if anyone knows different or more please let me know. Church Update

Work has commenced, and is almost complete, on the “Enabling Stage” which is the clearance of debris, resulting from the fire, and the inspection of stonework etc. Bakers of Danbury have been sympathetically carrying out this operation whilst ensuring that all items of importance are carefully preserved and protected. All the pews have been removed and are currently being stored in the chancel to enable investigative work to be carried out on the floor which incurred some subsidence. At the same time involvement of archaeologists has been necessary to determine and register any historical issues prior to reinstatement. As previously reported the bells suffered major damage and all have now been lowered for examination and re-casting. This has been done with the help of John Taylor & Co. Discussions have also commenced on looking at the way forward as far as the church organ is concerned with all options being considered including a new pipe organ v an electronic one.

Whilst the work on the church has been moving apace, support from the community has continued, particularly from a financial point of view. A great example of this is the recent concert by the Royston Town Band the proceeds from which, amounting to £412, were for the benefit of the church. We were also delighted to hear that our refurbishment project had won the vote under the Tesco Bags of Help scheme resulting in a grant of £4,000. These, together with other donations means that the Church Refurbishment Fund has grown to over £30,000 - a great big “Thank You” to everyone involved. Out & About... Royston Historical pageant Have you ever imagined what Royston looked like 600 or so years ago? With its quintessential medieval layout and some of its beautifully preserved buildings, it isn’t too hard to imagine in places.

Gloucester. They will be holding a knight’s table and demonstrating the armour and weaponry of the day. An enthralling medieval finance tent will show you how money was counted and paid to the men.

On Sunday 7th July, Royston Historical Pageant will be recreating medieval life in Priory Memorial Gardens. We will start with a procession from the Royse Stone at 11am, to which everyone is invited. Come in costume and march to lute music, where there will be wealth of living history experiences for everyone to enjoy.

Our very own, popular Royston Archery Club will be on hand, in costume, to provide have-a-go archery sessions for anyone inspired by the soldiers’ demonstrations. Listen to hilarious tales of medieval mayhem told by the Yarnsmith of Norwich himself. He will be in his own authentically furnished tent and accompanied by music played on period musical instruments.

If you were feeling ill in Victorian times it was easy to take hard drugs without realising it. Advertisements for medicines promised to cure all sorts of ailments, but with ingredients like cocaine, opium and many more they were addictive and potentially lethal. Our speaker Graham Harrison revealed that poisons were also commonly used in children’s medicines. Cough mixtures and toothache drops both contained morphine. A lack of regulation meant manufacturers did not have to provide any scientific evidence for the claims they made, resulting in some bizarre and outrageous products At the next meeting on 30th July, Sarah Harrison and Ros Holbrow will present Comedy Pulsatillas. We began our summer programme with a talk by Andy Malcolm from the Fisherman’s Mission and the vital role they play in supporting and caring for our thousands of fishermen and their families. The charity is entirely dependent on voluntary donations. Our next speakers were Brenda Harley telling us about her sewing activities and being a poet and David Sharp speaking on Astronomy, both very entertaining talks. We ended June with a wonderful day trip to Hemingford Grey Manor House which also included lunch.

We ask that you keep your dogs on short leads (less than 2metres) around grazing areas. It is stressful to the sheep to be harassed and could lead to the cessation of grazing on site – which is essential for maintaining the chalk grassland habitat.

Following suggestions made at the recent public meeting the Conservators are not pursuing the idea of charging for car parking at the moment. Instead they are looking at the best way of encouraging people to make voluntary contributions towards the maintenance of the Heath. The Therfield Regulation Trust has retrospectively applied to the Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs for consent under section 38 of the Commons Act 2006/section 23(2) of the National Trust Act 1971/article 12 of the Greater London Parks and Open Spaces Order 1967* to carry out restricted works on the entrance to Therfield Heath, on Baldock Road, Royston (inc resurfacing of the car park). From Tallulah’s Kitchen ALL aMERICAN bAKED CHEESECAKE WITH PECAN PIE TOPPING

Hello my fellow foodies... and welcome to another bright and shiny edition of The Listing.

This month I thought I would share wilth you something to celebrate our American neighbour’s Independence Day. I was torn between a proper baked cheesecake and Pecan Pie, so after much debate I though “why not the best of both?” I hope you enjoy it! For the base • 300g Digestive Biscuits • 2tbsp Cocoa Powder • 50g Melted Butter • 1tbsp Golden Caster Sugar

• 2tbsp Plain Flour • 2 tbsp Orange Juice • Finely grated zest of one orange • 2 eggs from happy free running hens Cream together the cream cheese, sugar and sour cream together then add the flour, orange juice zest and eggs and beat until all ingredients are thoroughly mixed. Pour this mixture over the chilled biscuit base and bake at 170° for approximately one hour until the cheesecake is set with a slight “wobble” and just beginning to colour on top. Remove from the oven and allow to cool in its tin.

Place brown sugar, cornflour and salt in a heavy based saucepan. Add the egg yolks, maple syrup and double cream and heat up until the sugar dissolves, then bring to the boil stirring all the time. Once you have a custard like consistency add the chopped Pecans nuts and stir well. Allow to chill slightly then pour this nutty loveliness on top of the cheese cake and arrange the Pecan halves on top in a pattern of you choice. Chill for as long as possible, over night works well, before slicing and serving with Patriotism, a ticker tape parade and much fanfare.... or lashings of whipped cream and a nice cup of tea if that is more your “thing!” Until next time dear reader...

The cocktails range from the classic - Strawberry Negroni (Belsazar Rose Vermouth + Strawberry Infused Campari + Gin) to the contemporary Lady Marmalade (Marmalade Vodka + Bergamot + Sicilian Lemonade + Teapot Bitters), and as for the gins.... botanicals and garnishes include everything you can think of and then some more..cardamom, samphire, sea air (yes, really), tea, pink pepper, apricot, cherry.. oh the list goes on! Weekly Healthy Walking with Cambridge PPF

Every Thu, 10am Wandlebury Country Park, Wandlebury Ring, Gog Magog Hills, Stapleford, CB22 3AE We have an enthusiastic group of trained volunteers who lead our two, weekly Walking for Health walks at Wandlebury. The first is slightly faster while the second is more leisurely, accommodating people who are not so fit or are newcomers to the group. Each walk lasts around 30 minutes and covers about 1.5 miles. With the slower second walk, we offer a shortcut back to the base if needed. This social group meets all year round at 10am every Thursday morning, with the slower walk starting at 10.30am. Royston Townswomen Guild A Motoring correspondent, Rodney Tibb’s career took him to exotic and unusual locations. On one assignment he went to Jordan. He was to join a luxury liner anchored offshore. Rodney was instructed to take a new car to Petra for a special photo shoot. Petra, an archaeological site in Jordan’s south western desert, is carved into pink sandstone cliffs and is known as The ‘Rose City. Petra is not only a UNESCO World Heritage site, but also one of the Seven New Wonders of the World – chosen in 2007.

For the photo shoot, cars were to be placed in front of the famous 45m high Al Khazneh temple with its ornate, Greekstyle facade as the backdrop. But there was an enormous problem. Access to the temple was only via a narrow canyon one kilometre long, named Al Siq. But how were they going to get a car in there? Rodney explained how each car was carefully airlifted and manoeuvred into place by helicopter.

Think Garden, Think Richard Materials For A Purpose... Path Products Melbourn garden designer, Richard Arnott Continuing my series of articles for 2019, Materials For A Purpose, I am going to be discussing how best to choose the right materials for your desired purpose and how they best fit into the design of a space. I want to get you thinking about the options and how the right selection can give you a cohesive, timeless solution rather than a predictable, uninspiring result. This month I want to investigate products used for screening in the garden. Fencing is a very obvious way to screen and delineate a garden boundary and it certainly comes in all shapes and sizes. Last summer I designed and built a small Cambridge contemporary courtyard garden. The space was viewed on all sides through the bifold glass doors so the fencing material needed to be higher specification and quality to act as a back drop to the planting. I used horizontal slatted panels that allow some light and give a contemporary flavour to the space and complemented the granite paving. In sharp contrast a simple boundary fence in a large country garden could be feather edge

boarding or split chestnut post and rails. For a smarter option the woven willow looks great! Trellis panels are a good way to extend the height of your fence by an extra 600mm (2ft) and allow light through. The standard shapes are square or diamond and this allows for that extra amount of screening. Generally I would grow climbers such as Clematis or golden hop up and through the trellis to soften the effect. I find that gardens can look box like and claustrophobic with too much fencing. Simply adding shaped borders and breaking up the amount of wood the eye looks at will help to eradicate the rectilinear feel that fencing gives. Shelterbelt planting is my go to solution for softening and greening up the screening effect. By shelter belt I mean a collection of planting that will act as a block for wildlife, colour and interest. This is useful in more rural locations where post and rail fencing is more appropriate and cost effective over a long run. Mixed native shrubs will soon grow up to provide all year round interest and a wildlife habitat at the same time. In urban back gardens this is even more relevant where wildlife habitat for birds is being eroded by low maintenance, sterile outdoor spaces. Planted back gardens can provide a corridor of habitat for our wildlife linking spaces together, but if there is no planting the gardens cannot link. I love to use hazel, guilder rose, dog wood, spindle, hawthorn, holly and crab apple to name just a few!

Lollipop trees have become popular to screen specific views in outdoor spaces. The stem of the tree is clear to a given height with a shaped crown on top to screen the neighbour’s windows. It is often justifiable in a garden budget to spend on single ticket items to give instant solutions. I generally like to plant sensible sized plants and let them grow, but there are many more options available now. I like to use Ligustrum japonicum, Robinia pseudoacacia ‘Umbraculifera’ Laurus nobillis and Photinia ‘Red Robin’. There are other choices from specialist nurseries and it is worth selecting the trees in person to know exactly what you’re getting. This is especially relevent when selecting more than one. One year I had a client that sold off part of the garden so needed several specimens to screen off the new development of houses at the end of the garden. Pleached trees are a very smart solution to screening issues in the garden. A pleached tree is essentially a hedge on stilts and is a great way to give controlled interest at height. I like to use Carpinus betulus and Pyrus calleryana ‘Chanticleer’ to name just a few. It does give a very deliberate effect and always reminds me of national trust gardens. Waterlight Film project You may have read about this project in previous editions of the Listing. Inspired by the River Mel, poet Clare Crossman wrote nine poems capturing the essence of our beautiful chalk stream. She then linked up with film maker James Murray White to make a film about the river based on her poems. Further filming has been carried out by Nigel Kinnings who has also edited the film. After a year of capturing memories, interviewing residents, involving Meldreth primary school children and extensively filming, the film is now going to be shown in Melbourn. Business Lessons the easy way A magazine I read recently asked its entrepreneur readers to send in business lessons that they had had to learn the hard way. Here are a few that particularly resonated with me: 1. You can’t do everything on your own. Building a team is essential because there are only so many hours one person can devote to a business. If you don’t want to be handcuffed to your business, make sure your team can carry on when you’re not around. 2. You may think your product is perfect, but your clients won’t. You only find out how good a product really is when it’s in the field and users are beating it up. It’s like X Factor contestants – they think they’re talented, their friends tell them they’re brilliant, but once they get on the big stage it can be a different story. 3. Do one thing really well. Entrepreneurs try to be everything to everyone, but it really pays to specialise and carve yourself a profitable niche.

4.Undercharging is not sustainable. Lowering your prices or giving discounts is just giving money away for no benefit. Instead, always choose to compete on quality, value, expertise and your niche focus. New clients who start with you because you’re cheapest will dump you without a qualm as soon as someone else undercuts you. 5. Be grateful. Appreciate loyal customers who show you there is a demand for what you do. There is no cash amount you can put on loyalty and the effect of having brand advocates. 6.It’s not a sale until it’s paid for. It’s great getting an order, or landing a meeting with a prospective client. But that counts for nothing until the money is in the bank! And if you have any lessons to share with other entrepreneurs, just let me know and I’ll put them in a future article. Good luck!
