Welcome Our July issue is packed full of events, and once again we are in awe of the sense of community we enjoy here in Royston and the surrounding villages, all thanks to the many super people who live here and make things happen. We think that makes our corner of the world a pretty special place to live! We’re excited about the all-new event for the Royston calendar this year; the Historical Pageant, which promises to recreate medieval life in the Priory Memorial Gardens. You are invited to dress in costume and join the procession from the Royse Stone, enjoy a medieval reenactment group and try your hand at archery, plus much more. Melbourn Community Allotment was an overgrown mess just two years ago - and thanks to the work of a few dedicated volunteers, it’s now producing a range of fruit, vegetables and cut flowers. Gardening is proven to provide health and wellbeing benefits, so do get involved and enjoy this wonderful facility - see page 7 for more details.

Melbourn Community Allotment

Fancy spending some time in the fresh air and getting outdoors? Now is the perfect time especially now the good weather is on the way. Two years ago, Melbourn Community Allotment on the Moor was an overgrown mess. Now, thanks to the work of a few, dedicated volunteers, it is a well organised, highly attractive site producing a range of fruit, vegetables, and even cut flowers.

There are many ways gardening can help with your mental health.

It is currently looking for new helpers to join the group from 10am-12pm on Friday mornings. Helpers get lots of fresh air, gentle exercise, and produce to take home.Tools and refreshments are also provided and all abilities of gardeners are welcomed.

• Gardening is theraputic - it can take your mind off everyday stresses and just focus on the garden

“It was always our intention to invite those with mental health problems or the socially isolated to join us,” says Diana Barker, the group’s leader, “But anyone wanting fresh air, friendship, and gentle exercise is more than welcome.”

• Gardening is great exercise - 3/4 hours gardening can burn as many calories as an hour of exercising.

• It’s a good way to vent anger - Certain areas can be great to release some anger and cutting and chopping helps prevent plants from overgrowing! No experience of gardening is necessary. The book sheds light on the history of part of the village which has been highly valued by the most powerful in the land. Running through this are glimpses into the lives and buildings of some of those people who have shaped the village and the land owned by Winchester Abbey from before Domesday. Finally it asks one very important question: why has The Rouses been considered so special through the ages?

We typically host families from the three towns in our homes, escorting them on sightseeing trips around the Cambridge area, and then visit their home towns to take part in local festivals and culture. We also support the new Student Exchange initiative at RSAT school. It is a great opportunity on both sides to improve language skills and experience other customs. At home we hold regular social events to help raise funds

Royston Arts Festival needs you! Royston Arts Festival will be taking place from 20th – 29th September. This year’s theme is “Our Planet” and we’re excited to be able unveil the full programme of events.

We’re looking for volunteers to help out during the festival – particularly over the weekend of 27th – 29th September, when the programme is at its busiest. It’s a great opportunity to get involved and contribute to a popular fixture in the Royston calendar. The other week, three friends and I headed over to the fab Thai Food Direct supermarket in Letchworth, where we bought authentic thai ingredients such as galangal, turmeric root, coriander root, lemon grass, lime leaves and copious amounts of fresh chillies.

Out & About...

Royston HISTORICAL Pageant Have you ever imagined what Royston looked like 600 or so years ago? With its quintessential medieval layout and some of its beautifully preserved buildings, it isn’t too hard to imagine in places. On Sunday 7th July, Royston Historical Pageant will be recreating medieval life in Priory Memorial Gardens. We will start with a procession from the Royse Stone at 11am, to which everyone is invited. Come in costume and march to lute music, where there will be wealth of living history experiences for everyone to enjoy. Company Ecorcheur, a medieval reenactment group, will be camping and living the life of a regiment of the Duke of Gloucester. They will be holding a knight’s table and demonstrating the armour and weaponry of the day. An enthralling medieval finance tent will show you how money was counted and paid to the men. Our very own, popular Royston Archery Club will be on hand, in costume, to provide have-a-go archery sessions for anyone inspired by the soldiers’ demonstrations. Listen to hilarious tales of medieval mayhem told by the Yarnsmith of Norwich himself. He will be in his own authentically furnished tent and accompanied by music played on period musical instruments. We are very proud to present dancing and mummers plays by English

Miscellany. They will bring with them their French twinning counterparts, bringing an international slant to their shows. If you want to learn a few medieval dance moves yourself, Herts Early Dance and their minstrels would be delighted to let you join in. There will be juggling for budding jesters, a mini joust for apprentice knights, and fabulous birds of prey to admire. Delicious food will be available in the form of hog roast, and other sumptuous delights. Lord Conrad’s Brewery will be hosting our very own medieval ale bar, selling locally produced ales and beers. Bring the family. It promises to be an awesome day of medieval fun and games where you might even learn some fascinating historical facts and feel yourself catapulted back to our vibrant past. MUSEUM MUSINGS: Tapestry Unveiling

After 30 years, we are so excited to be unveiling the completed Royston Tapestry in July. So many people have volunteered their time, expertise, knowledge and skills to bring this work of art to life. Head along to Royston Town Hall from Saturday 6th to Thursday 11th July from 10am – 5pm to see the tapestry. So much work has gone into it, from when it was first thought up to stitching each scene and finally to getting it ready for display. And it’s all been done by local people. We live in a wonderful town with so much talent! After being displayed in Royston, the tapestry will be off on an adventure to other museums. It may be the Royston

We began our summer programme with a talk by Andy Malcolm from the Fisherman’s Mission and the vital role they play in supporting and caring for our thousands of fishermen and their families. The charity is entirely dependent on voluntary donations. Our next speakers were Brenda Harley telling us about her sewing activities and being a poet and David Sharp speaking on Astronomy, both very entertaining talks. The answer’s blowing in the wind...

That’s the song Royston Rotarians hope to be singing on 4th August when their annual Kite Festival comes round again. Now a wellestablished highlight of Royston’s summer calendar, the Festival has been delighting Royston families for 29 years, always raising thousands of pounds for charity. This year’s event manager is Ray Munden, who has been running Rotary’s historic vehicle shows since they started. He says “Bringing the historics to the Heath has certainly been a success. They complement the kite flying very well, and we’re hoping for an even bigger turn-out this year.” Has the Festival changed much? “Less than you might think” says Ray. “The kites are still the main attraction, but there’s a bigger variety of stalls. Our famous Tombola is the biggest and best for miles, and it’s always popular”. Royston Lions’ kite making workshop will be there too, and the famous parachute drop for any adventurous teddy bear who fancies being a Para. Kite people

always worry about the weather, though Royston has usually been lucky. Rain has been a rarity, but, says Ray. “We’ve had years with such light winds, it’s been a challenge to launch the bigger kites. But our fliers are always resourceful, and there’s never been a year when no kites could fly.” Royston people appreciate their unique Heath. So lots of families enjoy spreading a blanket on the grass at the top of the arena, where the view is spectacular, and breaking out the pop and sausage rolls for what the Rotarians hope will be another afternoon of fun in the sun –with just the right amount of wind! News from the conservators New Car Park

The car park repairs are well underway, and we thank both the Racher Trust and Rotary for their donations to make this happen. The brief inconvenience was worth it now we have a wider entrance, white lines and flowing traffic.

Logo Competition

We presented to the new Royston Schools Academy Trust and invited pupils to design us a logo to be used on all external communication and we look forward to seeing the entries in the coming weeks and presenting the results here in The Listing with the name of the lucky winner.

Sheep

The sheep are up on Pen Hills and we hope everyone is checking the map on the Heath club house wall, website and social media. We ask that you keep your dogs on short leads around grazing areas. It is stressful to the sheep to be harassed and could lead to the cessation of grazing on site – which is essential for maintaining the chalk grassland habitat.

Chalkhill Blue

Last year was a good year for butterflies. At the time of writing, there is a very good display of Horseshoe Vetch, the food plant of the Chalkhill Blue’s larva but it is too early to have seen any s yet. Good numbers of small heath butterflies have been seen.

Birds Thank you to everyone who walks the heath and has respected the ground nesting birds. We have been surveying the breeding birds, so next year can target ‘dog-on-lead’ areas.

Voluntary Contribution

Following suggestions made at the recent public meeting the Conservators are not pursuing the idea of charging for car parking at the moment. Instead they are looking at the best way of encouraging people to make voluntary contributions towards the maintenance of the Heath. ALL aMERICAN bAKED CHEESECAKE WITH PECAN PIE TOPPING

Hello my fellow foodies... and welcome to another bright and shiny edition of The Listing.

This month I thought I would share wilth you something to celebrate our American neighbour’s Independence Day. I was torn between a proper baked cheesecake and Pecan Pie, so after much debate I though “why not the best of both?” I hope you enjoy it! For the base

Cream together the cream cheese, sugar and sour cream together then add the flour, orange juice zest and eggs and beat until all ingredients are thoroughly mixed. Pour this mixture over the chilled biscuit base and bake at 170° for approximately one hour until the cheesecake is set with a slight “wobble” and just beginning to colour on top. Remove from the oven and allow to cool in its tin. For the topping • 130g Brown Sugar

• 300g Digestive Biscuits

• 25g Cornflour

• 2tbsp Cocoa Powder

• 1/4 tsp Salt

• 50g Melted Butter • 1tbsp Golden Caster Sugar

• 4 egg yolks from free running hens eggs

Crush the biscuits to a fine crumb, add the sugar and the cocoa powder then stir in the melted butter and mix thoroughly. Pour into a grease proof, lined, loose bottom 23cm round tin and press down to form a flat and even layer, pop it in the fridge to chill.

• 125ml Double Cream

For the filling • 340g Cream Cheese

Place brown sugar, cornflour and salt in a heavy based saucepan. Add the egg yolks, maple syrup and double cream and heat up until the sugar dissolves, then bring to the boil stirring all the time. Once you have a custard like consistency add the chopped Pecans nuts and stir well. Allow to chill slightly then pour this nutty loveliness on top of the cheese cake and arrange the Pecan halves on top in a pattern of you choice.

• 140g Caster Sugar • 125ml Sour Cream • 2tbsp Plain Flour • 2 tbsp Orange Juice • Finely grated zest of one orange • 2 eggs from happy free running hens

• 150ml Maple Syrup • 150g Chopped Pecan Nuts • 2tbsp Butter • 100g Pecan halves to decorate

Chill for as long as possible, over night works well, before slicing and serving with Patriotism, a ticker tape parade and much fanfare.... or lashings of whipped cream and a nice cup of tea if that is more your “thing!” Until next time dear reader...

Materials For A Purpose... Path Products Melbourn garden designer, Richard Arnott

Continuing my series of articles for 2019, Materials For A Purpose, I am going to be discussing how best to choose the right materials for your desired purpose and how they best fit into the design of a space. I want to get you thinking about the options and how the right selection can give you a cohesive, timeless solution rather than a predictable, uninspiring result. This month I want to investigate products used for screening in the garden. Fencing is a very obvious way to screen and delineate a garden boundary and it certainly comes in all shapes and sizes. Last summer I designed and built a small Cambridge contemporary courtyard garden. The space was viewed on all sides through the bifold glass doors so the fencing material needed to be higher specification and quality to act as a back drop to the planting. I used horizontal slatted panels that allow some light and give a contemporary flavour to the space and complemented the granite paving. In sharp contrast a simple boundary fence in a large country garden could be feather edge boarding or split chestnut post and rails. For a smarter option the woven willow looks great! Trellis panels are a good way to extend the height of your fence by an extra 600mm (2ft) and allow light through. The standard shapes are square or diamond and this allows for that extra amount of screening. Generally I would grow climbers such as Clematis or golden hop up and through the trellis to soften the effect. I find that gardens can look box like and claustrophobic with too much fencing. Simply adding shaped borders and breaking up the amount of wood the eye looks at will help to eradicate the rectilinear feel that fencing gives. Shelterbelt planting is my go to solution for softening and greening up the screening effect. By shelter belt I mean a collection of planting that will act as a block for wildlife, colour and interest. This is useful in more rural locations where post and rail fencing is more appropriate and cost effective over a long run. Mixed native shrubs will soon grow up to provide all year round interest and a wildlife habitat at the same time. In urban back gardens this is even more relevant where wildlife habitat for birds is being eroded by low maintenance, sterile outdoor spaces. Planted back gardens can provide a corridor of habitat for our wildlife linking spaces together, but if there is no planting the gardens cannot link. I love to use hazel, guilder rose, dog wood, spindle, hawthorn, holly and crab apple to name just a few! Lollipop trees have become popular to screen

specific views in outdoor spaces. The stem of the tree is clear to a given height with a shaped crown on top to screen the neighbour’s windows. It is often justifiable in a garden budget to spend on single ticket items to give instant solutions. I generally like to plant sensible sized plants and let them grow, but there are many more options available now. I like to use Ligustrum japonicum, Robinia pseudoacacia ‘Umbraculifera’ Laurus nobillis and Photinia ‘Red Robin’. There are other choices from specialist nurseries and it is worth selecting the trees in person to know exactly what you’re getting. This is especially relevent when selecting more than one. One year I had a client that sold off part of the garden so needed several specimens to screen off the new development of houses at the end of the garden. Pleached trees are a very smart solution to screening issues in the garden. A pleached tree is essentially a hedge on stilts and is a great way to give controlled interest at height. I like to use Carpinus betulus and Pyrus calleryana ‘Chanticleer’ to name just a few. It does give a very deliberate effect and always reminds me of national trust gardens. Brazil Nuts

Oats

Time for Tennis? Playing tennis, it turns out, might be the best thing you can do to extend your life. It has long been established that exercise helps you live longer, but a 2018 study from Denmark showed that compared to a sedentary lifestyle playing tennis extends one’s life expectancy by a remarkable 9.7 years. While other sports all provided benefits, tennis was the clear winner. Waterlight Film project You may have read about this project in previous editions of the Listing. Inspired by the River Mel, poet Clare Crossman wrote nine poems capturing the essence of our beautiful chalk stream. She then linked up with film maker James Murray White to make a film about the river based on her poems. Further filming has been carried out by Nigel Kinnings who has also edited the film. After a year of capturing memories, interviewing residents, involving Meldreth primary school children and extensively filming, the film is now going to be shown in Melbourn. You are invited to “AN EVENING WITH THE RIVER MEL” on 25th July at 8.00pm at the Community Hall behind the church in Melbourn. The film will be shown and, after a break for refreshments and chat, we will share experiences of the river recounted to us by local residents: for

instance one said “the river was our playground when I was a child” and then described her various activities in and by the river. Following this we hope attendees will participate in a general discussion and share their memories of the river, triggered by the film, which we can record for the website. Following the local showing it will be shown in Royston and at venues in Cambridge and it is planned to also show it at film festivals around the country. Professional Business Lessons the easy way A magazine I read recently asked its entrepreneur readers to send in business lessons that they had had to learn the hard way. Here are a few that particularly resonated with me: 1. You can’t do everything on your own. Building a team is essential because there are only so many hours one person can devote to a business. If you don’t want to be handcuffed to your business, make sure your team can carry on when you’re not around. 2. You may think your product is perfect, but your clients won’t. You only find out how good a product really is when it’s in the field and users are beating it up. It’s like X Factor contestants – they think they’re talented, their friends tell them they’re brilliant, but once they get on the big stage it can be a different story. 3. Do one thing really well. Entrepreneurs try to be everything to everyone, but it really pays to specialise and carve yourself a profitable niche.

4.Undercharging is not sustainable. Lowering your prices or giving discounts is just giving money away for no benefit. Instead, always choose to compete on quality, value, expertise and your niche focus. New clients who start with you because you’re cheapest will dump you without a qualm as soon as someone else undercuts you. 5. Be grateful. Appreciate loyal customers who show you there is a demand for what you do. There is no cash amount you can put on loyalty and the effect of having brand advocates. 6.It’s not a sale until it’s paid for. It’s great getting an order, or landing a meeting with a prospective client. But that counts for nothing until the money is in the bank!
