Welcome

Here comes summer!

The long school holidays are here, so as you look to fill the long days ahead, why not enjoy our tips for some activities and highlights this summer holidays? The Listing believes that a great day out should be free or at least really excellent value. Let us know how you get on and feel free to share your tips and activities on our Facebook page: www.facebook.com/TheListing

Visit Royston’s Splash Park Cool off on a hot day by visiting Royston’s Splash Park, located in Royston Priory Memorial Gardens. A great way to spend the day with little ones! Royston Splash Park, Priory Memorial Gardens and whilst you are there, look out for the

New drinking Fountain which has been newly installed in Priory Memorial Gardens, thanks to NHDC in a bid to be more sustainable and benefit the well being of users to the park. Be sure to take your reusable water bottles along when you visit the park this summer!

Discover the Birds at RSPB Fowlmere

Fowlmere’s reedbeds and pools are fed by natural chalk springs, and a chalk stream runs through the reserve. Special birds include kingfishers, water rails, and nine species of warblers. The nature trail is partly wheelchair and pushchair accessible, as are two of the three hides. Why not watch dragonflies buzzing around after their small insect prey, look out for butterflies feeding on flowers and basking in the sunshine or look for fish in the chalk stream? www.rspb.org.uk/reserves/guide/fowlmere

Visit Ashwell Springs Ashwell Springs are designated a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) by Natural England. A careful balance has to be achieved between this and its use as an amenity area. The Parish Council is pleased for people to come and enjoy the space but asks that they respect it as a nature reserve, so why not visit and dip your toes in the ice cold waters. MUSEUM MUSINGS: Royston Tapestry

Wow! In early July, we finally revealed the complete Royston Tapestry and what a wonderful success it was. So many people involved in working on it were able to join us for a special evening to celebrate. We were honoured to welcome Jane Vincent, the curator of Royston Museum in 1989 who first had the idea for a tapestry. We also saw many of the people who’ve stitched on it over the years. We’re so pleased to be able to show them the result of all their hard work. Everyone involved should be proud of what they’ve achieved.

we’ve loved seeing photos and videos on social media. We’re so proud and it’s huge to see it reaching people all over the world! The tapestry will be heading off on tour soon to other museums. You can keep up to date with its adventures by following #RoystonTapestry. If you have any photos, we’d love to see them, so please share them with us! www.facebook.com/ roystonmuseum www.roystonmuseum.org.uk

Mayor, Rob Inwood gave an emotional speech celebrating the tapestry and he highlighted its importance for Royston. This will help put Royston on the map! We welcomed so many people during the week it was on display and

Kip McGrath Royston located in Lower King Street provides English and maths tuition by fully qualified teachers for children aged between 6 and 16. The centre was set up and opened in April by experienced local teacher Ashley Catlin. The centre initially offers a free, no obligation assessment where Ashley identifies the area of the curriculum where the student may have gaps in their learning, may lack confidence or where they feel like they are not being stretched. Students are then enrolled on to a program of study in English or maths with weekly sessions lasting for 80 minutes. Each student has their own individual planned programme using the Kip McGrath curriculum materials. The resources are continually updated and available online in all 700 Kip centres around the world.

Ashley Catlin has been a teacher for over 25 years and brings a breadth of knowledge and experience to the centre. His experiences include working in various primary and secondary schools in Hertfordshire, many as a Senior Leader. Ashley’s motivation for setting up the business is to help children to become more confident and happier in their learning. Our small group environment with personalised learning plans that allow students to work at their own pace using paper and computer based activities is suited to supporting children’s learning. NEWS FROM OUR CLUBS & SOCIETIES... Royston and the surrounding villages are a hive of activity. We are incredibly fortunate to have a wealth of clubs and societies within our town and villages, covering a wide range of interests - from arts to sports, adventure to support.

Award winning singer Robert Habermann had us all singing along when he stepped on stage to tell the story of the great Hollywood musical. He went Flying down to Rio with Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers, travelled Somewhere over the Rainbow with Judy Garland, headed off on The Road to Morocco with Bing Crosby and ended up Singin’ in the Rain with Gene Kelly. Accompanied by pianist Trevor Brown, we were treated to a unique musical show full of songs and stories about the stars of the golden age of Hollywood. Taking a break in August, the next monthly meeting will be on 24th September with a talk on the life of a prison officer by Pauline Martindale at the Town Hall 2pm. At Royston Mencap we welcome all disabilities and all ages and an annual subscription of £15 entitles all members and their carer/parent/guardian to attend various events and outings during the year.

After becoming a Quilter Kids First Chartered club we have been lucky enough to secure 8 places on the 25th August for our children to train at Twickenham and meet some stars.

We recently held a very successful and fun event making pizzas at the Banyers in Royston, and by time this goes to press we would have had an outing to the Nene Valley Railway in Peterborough which we are sure will be very entertaining and exciting. Coming up we have a trip to Cromer and the Christmas Panto to look forward to. We also hold events throughout the year locally.

We hope this will continue to inspire and motivate the children at our club. We will be beginning the autumn season on the 1st September for registration and a fun day with Season properly Kicking off on the 8th September. In the mean-time all U7-u13 children are welcome to join us on a Wednesday night for Multisport. We also run girls only training on a Wednesday night 18:30-19:30 for U9s to U18s. Wednesday nights are definitely summer rugby nights as the Touch team take to the pitch for U14s+ and adults 7.30-9PM. All abilities welcome.

In July we had two wonderful talks and two Socials. Our first talk was by Colin Hill telling us about ‘Dancing with Diana, the Late Princess of Wales’, an intriguing insight into his time as a Close Protection Officer for the Royal Family during the late 80’s. Our next speaker was Jenny Gibbs making a welcome return to the club to tell us about her life in Turkey, a very amusing talk entitled ‘Turkish Talks – Hatching, Matching and Despatching’. Our last meeting was our Summer Social where we enjoyed cheese and wine and we then ended the Summer term with a Coffee Morning in aid of our charity, to support the restoration of Royston Church. We have a break in August and look forward to September when we start our Autumn Programme of meetings, talks and socials.

News from the conservators The latest update finds us in the height of summer having had an unusually wet June, July has been hot with little rain. The ground under foot will be very hard and is a potential fire hazard and August sees the summer holidays with people using the Heath for picnics. Please do not take a BBQ onto the Heath. We politely ask that no one picnic on Church Hill as it is the most important & ecologically sensitive nature area for rare flora on the Heath. Opposite Church Hill on the other side of the valley across the 10th hole of the Golf Course is Penn Hill, you will have seen about 100 sheep in their pen. A big thank you to everyone who walk this area as there have been no reports or instances of disturbance and a big thank you goes to the keen eyes of the dog walkers who are our ears and eyes. This year as an experiment the sheep will only graze on the West side of New Road. We will keep you up-todate with via The Listing, the map at the Heath Sports Club our website and social media. stage. Please be considerate to other users and please make sure you take your rubbish home with you. Like last year it’s a fabulous year for butterflies - with good showings of Chalkhill Blues, Dark Green Fritillaries, and many more. The signs placed to protect the ground nesting birds on Lankester Hill have now been removed. Both the Meadow Pipits and Skylarks had a successful breeding season. Our next volunteer task will be ragwort pulling, as agreed with Natural England. Ragwort is deemed harmful and we have a duty to keep it under control and not allow it to spread. We will not aim to eradicate it because it is not without its ecological benefits and we won’t remove those that are already being eaten by caterpillars. Please remember, it is an offence for anyone to pick or up root any plant on Therfield Heath unless prior agreement is obtained from Natural England. Burning Issues

An hour with Ray Constant, Watch Commander at Royston Fire Station, reveals an intriguing picture of firefighting in the 21st century. Alongside the facts and figures – numbers of firefighters on call, the increasing number of women joining the service, the variety of callouts – are human stories about what happens behind those big red doors. Around the clock communication is key – within and between teams, at arm’slength and on the ground. All on-call firefighters are expected to be within 4 minutes of reaching the fire station. For all the vital part that technology and state-of-the-art equipment play in running an efficient and effective emergency service, it’s important to remember that the officers at the heart of it all are humans, not machines. In situations that are literally life and death, the fire crews work as professional teams, trusting each other 100%, regarding

colleagues almost like family members. They even have their own language; many will know that a callout is known as a ‘shout’, but a ‘pump’ and a ‘line’ are probably not what you think they are!

This month we are inspired by the annual ‘Summer Reading Challenge’ which is supported by our local libraries in Royston and Bassingbourn. There’s nothing quite like a good book!

Cath mentions

I’m a “holiday reader” but I have made more of an effort recently to pick up a book. I recently read The Couple Next Door, a domestic suspense which highlights that people, really, are capable of almost anything. A young couple are asked for dinner at their neighbours’ house but when their six month old baby isn’t welcome, they decide to leave her alone at home, checking hourly and listening on the baby monitor. And then, on their return, they discover their baby has gone missing... Full of twists and turns, this book was un-put-down-able.

reading her latest book ‘After the End’ after recently finishing ‘I Let You Go’ which had me hooked from the first page – a tense psychological thriller, with a twist I didn’t see coming! This is one of those books I never got bored reading and never wanted to put it down. Clare really knows how to keep you hooked. I’m not going to say much about the actual story itself. But be assured, you will love it. After the shocking twist there’s yet another devastating twist right at the end of the book, which will leave you shivering. Let me know what you think...?

Ellie mentions

I am that person who never gets round to reading a book, until I go on holiday that is, and then it only takes me only a day to read one. I prefer a light read. Nothing that you need to think about too much between getting splashed by the pool. I’ve chosen a book called Hey Ladies which is told through a series of emails and texts leading up to a wedding, and is hilariously funny. I liked how it differs to normal writing.

Loving Local Living

My Local Life Rob radford

Each month, The Listing finds out more about the person behind the business. This month, we chatted to Rob Radford from Oven Wizards. Rob lives in Moggerhanger near Sandy, in Bedfordshire, where he is well placed to serve customers in East Bedfordshire, North Hertfordshire and South and West Cambridgeshire, providing a warm, friendly, efficient and courteous oven cleaning service. What’s your favourite place to eat? For family food then The White Horse in Southill or for grown up dining then The Black Horse at Ireland, both horses but both very different! The last book you read? With a six year old and an eight month old I must confess reading is not something I spend much time doing now, so it was probably a couple of years back I read Ronnie O Sullivan’s biography!

What do you love about your work? I get a real sense of satisfaction turning a ‘busy’ oven into a nice clean one although I don’t get the same satisfaction doing my own one! What is your favourite way to spend a Saturday? I love watching football and when possible my beloved Barnet football club. What are you looking forward to most this month? Some sunshine hopefully and spending time outdoors seeing family and friends.

How do you keep fit? Cleaning ovens! I love running and most sports although ovens seem to be my most How do you relax? The walk sponsored by Cambridge Building Society starts at 9.30am, starting and finishing at Parker’ Piece. It’s a story, of love and loyalty, courage and fear, and was based in part on Rattigan’s own experiences in the RAF. It tells of a group of airmen stationed on the Lincolnshire coast and the women in their lives. What has been the most valuable life lesson that you have learnt? Before I went travelling after uni I would probably say I erred on the side of caution too often. The lesson I took from that period was definitely to be more bold, consider carefully every opportunity to do or try something new and don’t be left with any regrets!

Spotlight On... The RNLI in Royston Having been a member of the Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI) fund raising branch in Royston for over 10 years now I always find it amusing when collecting that people say: “How come the RNLI is in Royston when we are not near the sea?” Of course visitors to our Coastal areas will see the RNLI more prominently and also be more aware of the charity’s life saving work. But behind the frontline Crews and Lifeguards saving lives, there is an army of volunteers who work tirelessly up and down the country – coast and inland fundraising to support the dedicated front line workers. In addition, there are a number of Educational Volunteers who

go into schools to present on Beach Health and Safety, as well as promoting the RNLI’s Respect the Water initiative. Via this latter initiative the RNLI hopes to reach half a million children annually to educate and make them aware of the dangers both from the sea and inland water. As a fund-raiser I once had a lady say to me:- “Oh yes – let me give you something, I collected once for a charity and know how thankless a task it is !”. Well in my years of collecting I have never found it anything but rewarding. The Public is very supportive of the RNLI and here in Royston’s environs there are many with family associations, sometimes with the RNLI or others with livelihoods – past and current – at sea whether via naval, merchant shipping connections or just folk who love being out in boats as a pastime. And some have even been rescued or assisted by the RNLI either at sea or on the beaches or rocky outcrops when stranded. In fact whilst collecting we hear many interesting tales, so collecting is anything but thankless and in fact very rewarding. Most especially there is huge respect for the RNLI and its work as a very British charity, but also in the way it is

administered and run without any Government funding. We are always and remain extremely grateful to all those who donate to the RNLI and in Royston are always looking to grow our pool of collectors. We are only asking for folk to collect for an hour at a time and perhaps only twice a year – the more volunteers we can tap lessens the load on of us all but contributes greatly to the charity’s overall work. So if you feel that say twice a year or so you could just surrender an hour of your time to a really worthwhile charity we would welcome you to the cause. Please feel free to contact myself or our Branch Secretary – our contact details can be found on The Listing Website: www.bit.ly/RNLIRoyston

Grass Seed Season Spring and summer are lovely seasons for taking long walks on the green with our dogs... but be careful about grass seeds! In fact, grass seeds are in the terminal part of shrubs or grasses and at some point, they become dry and hard and can detach from the rest of the plant or fall on the ground. Their shape makes them very insidious and able to enter the skin and progress deep into the tissues or into a body cavity. They can get everywhere! Common locations are between the toes, where they can make a fistula under the skin and cause infections, or they can get inside the nose, making your dog sneeze very often. They can also go in the conjunctival sac and cause a painful eye infection, or in the ears and make your dog shake its head and make his ear very sore, in very serious occasions dogs can inhale

a grass seed, and if not retrieved in time it can cause serious infections in the lungs or in the abdomen. So avoid if possible walking your dog in places with a lot of grass seeds and always check your pet after a walk, paying special attention to the paws, ears and eyes. Think about keeping hairs short in those areas if it makes the job easier. And if you notice your pet shaking their head, sneezing a lot, limping with a fistula or a puncture between the toes/pads, or suddenly having a bad cough, then seek veterinary advice. This month I would like to take this opportunity to highlight the splendid work of the lovely people at The Hedgehog Hospital at Shepreth. I was lucky enough to discover the hospital last summer when I found a young hoglett running around in the road during the height of summer during the daytime. I took the newly named Spike ( not as originally named as I thought!) to the hospital where he was immediately checked over and admitted with hydration issues. Luckily he was soon released back into the world and I like to think of him snuffling through the undergrowth enjoying a life he wouldn’t have had if the lovely people at Shepreth hadn’t have worked their magic on him.

Shepreth Hedgehog Hospital

Shepreth Hedgehog Hospital is a specialised unit for the rehabilitation of sick and orphaned hedgehogs, with the ultimate aim, to release them back into the wild. Since the charity was established in 2011 the hospital has admitted over 4,100 hedgehogs, most of which are brought in by concerned members of the public. At the hospital we treat an array of problems including dehydration/ starvation, injuries (strimmers are not a hedgehog’s friend), hogs that were trapped (netting and rodent traps are also no friends of hedgehogs), and illness such as high internal parasite burdens. As well as treatment, the hospital is a source of information about the European hedgehog (Erinaceus europaeus). If you have a question on how to best care for your nocturnal garden

visitors, then feel free to pop in and ask - but please be aware we care for sick and poorly hedgehogs and they are not on “show”. The hospital is always looking for new sites to release healthy hogs back into the wild and if you are interested in this please contact us on: swcc@ sheprethwildlifepark.co.uk to see if your location would be suitable. Please come along to Hedgehog day at the park on the 26th August to help support the hospital. Out & About... Ashwell Show This year’s Ashwell Show, held on August Bank Holiday Monday, will host exhilarating camel racing for the first time in its 99 year history. This attraction promises to be a thrilling spectacle, with the camels and their jockeys dressed in fantastically colourful Arabian-style outfits. And what’s more – there’s the chance to actually meet the camels in-between races and learn more about these fascinating creatures. Other hooved events include the horse show, which continues to go from strength-to-strength, and will have more events in the main ring this year for all to enjoy. The horse schedule is now available on the Ashwell Show website for those who want to enter. Ashwell’s other firm favourite – the dog show – is sure to be great fun too, so bring down your pooch to enter the

competition and join in the fun. Those who have been to the Ashwell Show before will be pleased to see the event’s traditional displays, including: the birds of prey demonstration; hounds display; vintage cars; tractors; craft tent; craft demonstrations; and shopping stands. For families there’s hours of fun with free face painting, free children’s craft tent, children’s entertainer, climbing wall, archaeological dig, and pony rides. When it comes to food, this year’s show is set to have more choice than ever before, including yummy cakes served up by the Ashwell WI, fresh food choices with global cuisine, plus a prosecco bar and beer tent.

The Ashwell Show is run by volunteers, and over the last ten years, the Show has raised more than £100,000 for local clubs, societies and organisations. Please come and support the show! Monday 26th August, 8.30am - 5pm Ashwell Village www.ashwellshow.co.uk

When asked to think about her time at the school , Jackie reflects ‘One of the highlights of my time at Reed First School was the school year 2013/2014. This month we are highlighting one of our longest standing market traders. Mr Sharman’s flower stall has been bringing a burst of colour and fragrance to Royston Market for over 60 years with Gary and Simon currently at the helm on Wednesday’s and Saturdays.

Mrs Harvey will be succeeded by Mrs Vicky Wittich who will start her new role in September. She commented ‘Having met with everyone the enthusiasm and pride for the school is clear to see. I already feel very proud to be part of the school and I am very excited about its future.

Glazed Creations

Year 8 students at Royston Schools Academy Trust spent a day researching and painting a large ceramic tile periodic table last month in collaboration with Glazed Creations.

Each pupil was allocated 2 or 3 of the 118 elements on the periodic table to research with the brief that they needed to draw images to represent properties or uses of each of the elements this proved a particularly hard task for some elements! Glazed Creations led the afternoon session, pupils stencilled the details of their elements and then painted some wonderfully imaginative and colourful artwork. To finalise the

project students from the lower school site edged the tiles in the appropriate colours in their afterschool art club. This has been a truly collaborative project between the school and local business and between art and science. The periodic table will be mounted outside at the upper school site over the summer, keep your eyes peeled if you’re visiting.

Think Garden, Think Richard Materials For A Purpose... Vertical interest Melbourn garden designer, Richard Arnott Continuing my series of articles for 2019, Materials For A Purpose, I am going to be discussing how best to choose the right materials for your desired purpose and how they best fit into the design of a space. This month I want to investigate products used for vertical interest in the garden. Specimen trees are a great way to add vertical interest. I find it is always the planting that brings the garden to life. As our outdoor spaces seem to be shrinking due to the insatiable need to build more homes the green space in our gardens has never been so important. In a contemporary courtyard space, we designed and built, I used repeating Robinia pseudoacacia ‘Umbraculifera’ to give the garden drama and vertical interest. It is always important to match the right tree to the space. There is no point planting a large, broadleaf deciduous tree in your typical back garden, save this for a large country garden. I am a big fan of multi stemmed trees for back gardens. The advantage is as the name suggests they have multiple stems and as a result put energy into them all rather than the

traditional single stem of a standard tree shape. I love to use Amelanchier lamarckii with its pretty spring blossom and autumn leaves or Prunus serrula with its gorgeous mahogany, smooth bark. Sculptures are another good way to add vertical interest. For something old architectural salvage auctions can be a lot of fun and ebay can unearth some interesting items, but for something more contemporary there’s a plethora online. I love a pair of bronze boxing hares in a wild flower meadow. Remember, that height is important, especially if you want the sculpture to have presence within planting. Stand-alone items on plinths are a different matter but again it is hard to know how it will look until placed. I advise using a bamboo cane cut to the height of the item you are considering, placed in the ground at the proposed spot. This helps with visualising and is much easier to move around. I have used driftwood pieces within planting to good effect to create a natural, rustic feeling in a garden I built in Cambridge. It was used through the planting and around the pond to disguise the liner. Large tree roots upturned and placed in the border can work really well in a woodland themed planting arrangement. Pergolas are a classic way to add vertical interest and provide shade too. They come in all shapes and sizes but essentially the structure consists of upright legs and horizontal cross sections elevated to provide a framework. Garden centres are full of pergola kits. These can be a cost-effective way to gain

vertical interest so long as the quality of the timber is good. I have made many bespoke pergolas for clients to fit into my designs. We made a contemporary, chunky green oak pergola over an outdoor dining room that added a real statement vertical feature. Corteen Steel ages nicely with a rusty burnt orange colour and has been used in many show gardens, I have also seen scaffold poles and burnt sleepers used to great effect in urban, municipal design that looks great. Strained wires can work really well to give a more open airy feel to the roof of a structure. Climbers are the most popular form of vertical interest used by the garden designer. They come in all manner of forms from Clematis, Hydrangea and Jasmin to name just a few. The great thing about a trained climber is that the space they take up is usually on the fence and unlike a shrub they do not encroach into the useable garden space. I have lost count of the number of small gardens I have been to over the years to see large shrubs growing from both boundaries into the middle of the small garden. The advice is always the same. Remove the thuggish shrubbery and plant appropriate plants such as climbers and well behaved shrubs. For more in depth advice or garden design help please get in touch to arrange a consultation.

“What is Earthing?” Earthing is having a lot of attention at the moment, so I took the time to find our what it is and see if kicking my shoes off will make me feel better. And it really is quite simple. You literally connect your feet to the ground. Without having any shoes or flooring between you and the Earth. This fast-growing movement is based upon the discovery that connecting to the Earth’s natural energy is foundational for vibrant health. Just as the sun gives us warmth and vitamin D the Earth underfoot gives us food, water, a surface to walk, sit, stand, play and

Richard’s Monthly Tip

Inject some intensity. Instead of just plodding along on the treadmill or bike, crank up the speed and perform some intervals (high intensity work followed by active recovery periods). This will cut down on the time you spend at the gym, increase the calorie expenditure of your workout and improve your fitness gains.

build our homes on and most importantly a natural and gentle positive energy. Lacking in this energy can be the difference between feeling good and not so good, having lots of energy, sleeping well or not. When we make direct contact with the surface of the Earth our bodies receive a charge of energy that makes us feel good. So the next time you’re hanging the washing out kick your shoes off and feel that connection, embrace the muddy feet and feel good.

ARE YOU READY FOR MAKING TAX DIGITAL? HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) has recommended small businesses eligible for Making Tax Digital for VAT should allow up to five working days to set up direct debit instructions and begin making quarterly VAT payments. Making Tax Digital (MTD) is HMRC’s flagship platform, designed to digitise the UK’s tax system. It’s hoped the system will improve the accuracy of self-assessment and VAT returns of small businesses, thus ensuring they only pay the tax owed. HMRC rolled out MTD for all small businesses with an annual turnover above the £85,000 VAT threshold in April, with the first deadline for new quarterly VAT payments on 7th August. Following the roll-out of MTD for VAT in April, the Association of Tax Technicians implored small businesses to carefully plan their enrolment into the online service. This was to prevent them from incurring unnecessary late filing penalties for their first quarterly VAT payment. Previously, advice to small firms was to set up a direct debit instruction for quarterly VAT payments three working days prior to the deadline. However, HMRC has since recommended allowing five working days prior to the payment deadline as good practice. Any VAT-registered businesses that report quarterly under MTD and have a quarter end of June 2019, will have their first payment due on or before 7th August 2019. This is the first quarterly payment due under MTD. It’s important to note that once small businesses reach the £85,000 VAT threshold and are registered for MTD for VAT, they cannot remove themselves from the service and must continue to file all tax returns via MTD-compatible software. In a recent survey commissioned by Intuit QuickBooks, 42% of small businesses already registered for MTD for VAT said achieving MTD compliance was quicker than anticipated. Just 13% of respondents said achieving MTD compliance took longer than expected. If you’re struggling to keep up with your MTD for VAT reporting obligations, we can help you through this period of change. We’ve invested significant time into developing support services that make managing your books easy, thanks to our MTD-compliant software and guidance from TaxAssist Accountants Royston all the way. For a free initial consultation on your MTD for VAT requirements, please call us on 01763 226178 or email us at tasnuvatina@taxassist.co.uk www.thelistingmagazine.co.uk | 01763 248447 1908 The Listing Royston August 2018.indd 27

Professional

Time to grow your business?

We generally think that growth is good – but it may bring with it the need to hire more staff, find bigger premises and upgrade your machinery. But these are all risky investments – so how do you know when the time is right? I can’t make that decision for you – that’s your job as the boss – but here are five reliable indicators you might want to consider

1. There’s a rising need for your product The demand for your products or services is so great that you won’t be able to meet them unless you expand. But do make sure it’s real – not just a blip. 2. Problems with meeting your schedule You’re finding it harder and harder to meet your schedule. Production may be struggling, but you’re also finding it increasingly difficult to give clients the personal attention they need from you 3. A positive cash flow Make sure you have the cash to fund the growth. If your growth has come at the expense of cash flow, because you’ve cut your

prices to gain market share, it might be very dangerous to expand. I suggest you prove that you can retain those customers, THEN expand. 4. Your workplace is getting overcrowded If your staff are complaining about the cramped office and you never seem to have enough warehouse space – take a step back and see if you can improve your efficiency first. Then start planning that expansion! 5. You have a staff that you can rely on This is slightly different – DON’T expand unless you have staff you can rely on! And they can still deliver even when you’re not there. So there you are – growing your small business may seem like a logical next step, but it is far from risk-free. If it feels right to you and these five signs are there – then maybe the time really is right! Good luck!
