Welcome September brings with it new beginnings and opportunities. Many of our local schools have their Open Days ahead, to help you to choose the right school for your child. Many organisations and activities start up again in September, and you can see them within the What’s On pages.
October Deadline Friday 13th September
The end of September welcomes the return of Royston Arts Festival, and the Creative Royston committee is proud to unveil the full programme of over 30 events, which this year are themed around “Our Planet”. You should receive a copy of the programme along with The Listing, alternatively extra copies are available to pick up from Royston Library and around the town centre. Themed with the Festival, and as depicted on our covers, we also thought it was important for our readers to know that we choose to work with a printer who is a member of the Forestry Stewardship Council (FSC), a global not-for-profit organisation dedicated to the promotion of responsible forest management worldwide. Our magazines are printed on FSC accredited paper and printed using eco-friendly vegetable based inks.

The Royston Arts Festival’s theme of ‘Our Planet’ is a timely celebration of our precious earth and this month local groups are sharing practical ways to conserve resources and reduce waste; saving both money and the planet. The oldest of these local initiatives is Royston Recycle, an online platform for freecycling unwanted items. Since 2005 online exchanges have kept an estimated 45,000 items in use for longer. In the past five years, other volunteers running Royston Repair Café have also been keeping items out of landfill by offering free repairs of broken items, fixing over 50% of the 640 items assessed.
help rid the world of plastic, a long-time friend of the Repair Café has launched Anahata selling plastic-free, planetkind products online and on market stalls. Also offering products that are kind to the environment are Green & Grey makers of products for homes and gardens from reclaimed materials. Finally, to help recycle ‘difficult materials’, local organisers have teamed up with global recycling company Terracycle to establish When it comes to reducing waste in Royston, the newest kid collection points in and around Royston for items such as on the block is Royston Swish toothbrushes, crisp packets and – a free clothing exchange pet food pouches, also raising event being launched on the back of Oxfam’s Secondhand funds for charities. NEWS FROM OUR CLUBS & SOCIETIES... Royston and the surrounding villages are a hive of activity. We are incredibly fortunate to have a wealth of clubs and societies within our town and villages, covering a wide range of interests - from arts to sports, adventure to support.
Priory Quilters
Formed in 1993, Priory Quilters are a small, friendly and enthusiastic group of quilters. They meet on the first Tuesday of each month in the Heritage Hall at the Town Hall, 7.30-9.30pm. New members of all abilities are warmly welcomed. Members enjoy regular workshops, interesting speakers and sewing opportunities such as “away days” to get those unfinished projects done. This month, Priory Quilters will hold their biennial exhibition at the Market Hill rooms, as part of Royston Arts Festival. There will be a display of quilts made by the members, raffles and items for sale, as well as refreshments on offer. A large quilt made jointly by the group will be raffled in aid of Macmillan Cancer Support. Interested in textiles and sewing and would like to learn more? Do go along to the Exhibition (28th-29th September) where you can expect a warm welcome.
WI AM
In August we welcomed Louise Ellison to our meeting. She gave a talk entitled ‘Belly Dancing’. We heard that belly dancing has its roots in the Middle East and is thought to originate in Egypt. The dance form emphasizes isolated movements of the hips, torso and upper body. Belly dancing was popularized when Badia Masabni showcased belly dancers in her cabaret club in 1926. The dance form was first introduced into the UK in the 1960s. At the end of the talk Louise invited our members to join her and learn some of the movements in belly dancing.
WI AM meets on the 2nd Wednesday of the month at the Market Hill Rooms, Royston. Coffee and tea is served from 9.45 am followed with a speaker. To find out more call; Pat Morritt 01763 661627
Since its launch in 2005, The Listing has been proud to support the very many clubs and societies. We maintain and publish a comprehensive list of all the organisations, clubs and societies on our website: www.bit.ly/ClubsDirectory
WI PM
We meet together in Fellowship Hall, next to the Picture Palace, every second Thursday afternoon of the month. We start at 1.45pm and are always pleased to welcome new members. Have you ever wondered what is involved in being a puppy walker for Guide Dogs? At our October meeting Jackie Day will let us know. We have talks throughout the year as well as a monthly Lunch Club. Our various groups enjoy playing ukelele, exploring our beautiful countryside, discussing books and working on crafts. If you would like to help tidy up our local areas you could join our recently formed Litter Patrol. For more information give one of us a call: Eunice - 01763 231658 Jean – 01763 245958
Roysia Women’s Club
We’re looking forward to meeting up again in mid-September when we start the Autumn Programme. Our first speaker will be Sheila Edgar talking about ‘Clarence House’, the official London residence of The Prince of Wales and The Duchess of Cornwall, followed the next week by Paul Griggs speaking about his ‘Diary of a Musician’, a record of his life as a guitarist since the 1960’s. And our next Social will be the first meeting of October. We are a thriving club enjoying speaker meetings, fund raising events, socials and day trips. New members are always welcome and we meet in the Town Hall on Monday evenings from 8-9.45pm. For further details please contact Wendy Pearce on 01763 231381
Foxton Men’s Breakfast Mencap At our last meeting our planned visit was called off because of poor weather conditions and illness. However, one of our guests just happened to mention that he could speak briefly about his time as an advisor to a previous Mayor of London, none other than Boris Johnson! Anthony Brown spoke eloquently and kindly about his role in advising the Mayor, answering many interesting questions about Mr Johnson’s time in office and as a candidate for the role of Prime Minister. Our next meeting is on Saturday 21st September at 8.30 am in the lounge of Foxton Village Hall,CB22 6RN. Our guest speaker is County Councillor Peter Topping and his subject is “A history of the Home Office - from Lord North to Sajid Javid” Mark Howard: 01223 503377 or Tony Garrick: 01763 221658 or email; foxtonmensbreakfast@gmail.com
We recently had an outing to the Nene Valley Railway at Peterborough. We had a lovely ride on an old steam train until we alighted at Overton Station and took a short walk to Ferry Meadows, one of the largest country parks in the region. Fortunately it was a nice day which allowed us to explore all that Ferry Meadows has to offer. It has facilities for fishing and sailing and lots of meadows and woodland where children can make camps or experience all the playground rides, and of course a nice café and souvenir shop. Future outings include a day trip to Cromer and a session at Glazed Creations and afterwards at Wetherspoons. We welcome all disabilities and ages. Membership is £15 per year which gives access to all outings and events. www.roystonmencap.co.uk Linda: 07767 847796 Kyra: 07780 843296

News from the conservators This years Kite Festival was again a huge success. The Heath was very busy with a reported 5k people coming to see the annual spectacular. A huge thank you goes to Royston Rotary for again organising such a great event and for the huge team effort to manage vehicle movement and clear up so quickly. The sheep have been grazing the Pen Hill area of the Heath (west of Therfield Rd) and will hopefully move on to some areas just to the east of Therfield Road. Throughout the summer, regular butterfly surveys are undertaken by a few Butterfly Conservation volunteers. In addition, a couple of local experts carry out moth surveys a few times a year. Butterflies seen on the site include the chalkhill blue, brown argus, common blue, dark green fritillary, marbled white, small heath, meadow brown, ringlet, gatekeeper and more.

Spotlight On... National Air ambulance Week Could you spare some time this September to help your local life-saving charity? If so, the staff and volunteers from Essex & Herts Air Ambulance (EHAAT) would love you to join them during National Air Ambulance Week (NAAW) which runs from Monday 9th to Sunday 15th September, raising awareness and collecting donations for the Charity. This annual initiative sees air ambulance charities from Scotland to Cornwall working together to publicise their work and raise funds. The UK’s air ambulance charities are funded by the generosity of the public and treat over 25,000 patients a year. Across the UK an air ambulance is deployed every 10 minutes.
Throughout September EHAAT’s ‘Collection Crew’ will be at pre-arranged locations across Essex and Hertfordshire speaking to members of the public, collecting donations and selling pin badges. Jon Rodriguez, Head of Fundraising at EHAAT said: “National Air Ambulance Week is a great opportunity for us to talk to people in the community about how their donation really does make a difference.” “It costs in excess of £750,000 a month to cover all our costs and without access to National Lottery funding and only limited support from government we depend on the people of Essex and Hertfordshire to remain operational and
saving lives. If you could spare just two hours to help us during this important week to assist at one of our collection points, we would really appreciate it.” EHAAT, unlike NHS emergency services, is a charity providing a free life-saving Helicopter Emergency Medical Service for the critically ill and injured of Essex, Hertfordshire and surrounding areas. Each critical care team consists of a pilot and co-pilot, a pre-hospital care doctor and a critical care paramedic who can be rushed to the scene of an incident with life-saving support equipment to deliver advanced clinical care that is normally only found in the hospital emergency department. Once stabilised, the patient will be conveyed by air or land to the most appropriate hospital for their needs. To find out where EHAAT staff and volunteers will be collecting during National Air Ambulance Week, or to volunteer to help, contact the EHAAT fundraising team on 0345 2417 690 or visit: www.ehaat.org/naaw

This September sees wellknown local photographer Sarah Howard exhibit her work at The Hub in Melbourn. The exhibit show cases her work following a visit to the Camargue last year.
The Camargue is a Regional Natural Park, centred around the Rhone Delta on the border between Provence and Languedoc-Roussillon in the south of France. Covering more than 900 square kilometres to the south of Arles it is a large, flat area of marshes, fields, saltflats and lakes, and the largest river delta in Europe.
The famous Camargue horses are the main focus of this exhibition. Capturing them in full motion riding through the waves to photographing their guardians in action. Sarah says “Its certainly a way of life that’s very enviable, the location was truly stunning and an amazing opportunity to photograph these amazing horses.”
The exhibition runs from 2nd – 28th September at The Hub, Melbourn and photographs and cards will be available for sale. The Hub is open Monday to Saturday 9am – 5pm.
Whichever direction you arrive from the Camargue is a surprising contrast, with its landscape quite unlike anywhere else in the south of France. The Camargue Regional Natural Park is also home to an astonishing range of wildlife, including Flamingos, wild bulls and the renowned Camargue horses, and many hundreds of species of birds.

Love In a Time of War CADS are to perform classic wartime drama, Flare Path by Terence Rattigan as their contribution to this year’s Royston Arts Festival
This has been a year when anniversaries of the events of the Second World War have reminded us how much personal desires have to be sacrificed in a time of global conflict. Although written in 1942, the play explores themes that are still relevant today. Based in part on Rattigan’s own experiences as part of a bomber squadron, it tells of a group of airmen stationed in rural Lincolnshire for whom the fear of death is a very real daily possibility, and of the women who have to cope with the departure of their menfolk when orders come through for a sudden urgent raid on Germany and must face the prospect of hearing the worst. Rattigan mixes stories of emotional conflict, personal upheaval and psychological turmoil that leave almost no one unchanged by the end of the piece. If all that sounds rather
heavy, the play also contains much humour; eminent Sunday Times critic James Agate described it at the time as having “a laugh every minute… and a tear every ten”.
Peformances are on Friday 20th, Saturday 21st, Friday 27th and Saturday 28th September at 7.30. at the King James Academy (formerly Meridian School) Tickets are £12 each (concessions £10) and can be bought online via the website www.cadsroyston.org.uk or by ringing the CADS box office on 07925 674967

News from your Town Council – September 2019
Annual Report for the Financial Year 2018-2019 Royston Town Council published its Annual Report in June 2019, copies of which are available from the Town Hall Offices or it can be viewed online at www.roystontowncouncil.gov.uk. The report details the Town Council’s activities over the last financial year. The Town Council once again ran a number of successful events including the May Fayre and Silver Sunday. The Town Council also organised another successful round of visits to local schools during the spring term 2019. Town, District and County Councillors all took part and children were well engaged and put forward several ideas, which have been taken on board. A major achievement during the year was the renovation of the War Memorial, which included the installation of two ramps to ensure improved access for all. The work was complete for the 100th anniversary of the end of the First World War and huge crowds attended the Remembrance Day Parade to mark this significant event. Another significant change has been the upgrading of the visitor experience at Royston Cave, aiming to elevate the cave’s physical and digital presence to a level befitting a renowned heritage attraction. In September 2018, Nicky Paton was appointed as the new manager and has since worked with the Cave Advisory sub-committee to introduce a host of new features and Photo: Jon Large procedures. Royston Cave is aiming to offer a more professional and focussed visitor experience. Royston Cave is also working in close collaboration with Royston Museum to introduce new educational programmes, resources and events which will benefit the wider Royston community.

Royston is proud to have its own Museum and Art Gallery, which celebrates the wonderful stories of the district and its people. The Council’s thanks go to the friends of the Museum, the Royston & District Local History Society, the Royston & District Local History Society Trustees, the volunteers, and of course our curator Madeline Odent and her assistant Amy Judd. The Town Council requested a precept of £317,338 for the financial year 2019-2020. This meant that the Royston Town Council portion of the council tax rose to £47.29 per annum for a band D property. As previously reported, this rise has been introduced to get rid of zerohours contracts, budget more money for managing the ageing trees in our plantations and to provide a fund of £20,000 to start improvements and introduce new facilities for the town.

Royston and District Museum and Art Gallery Royston Museum enjoyed a memorable summer, starting with the longanticipated unveiling of the Royston Tapestry. Nearly 30 years Curator Madeline Odent with Jane Vincent, who after the work first thought of the idea in 1989. was first imagined, the finished masterpiece was exhibited in the Town Hall. Its debut attracted hundreds of visitors to the town, and was well received by the national press. The completion of the Tapestry, and the work to prepare a suitable permanent exhibit, has enabled the Museum to dream big. The Museum will either need to be relocated, or fully reconfigured, to create space for the Tapestry. As we begin planning this work, we’re inviting your feedback on how the Museum can better serve its purpose as a community space. We are also brainstorming ways to use our Collection to tell the history of Royston’s people more completely and thoroughly. We are preparing new and exciting exhibits, using artefacts, which have never been on display before. For the first time, the Museum will partner with the Royston Cave to create a fully accessible way to experience the Cave during its closed season. We are also increasing our family offerings and workshops, as well as our events for adults. We have visitor surveys and feedback forms available in the Museum and on our website, and we’d be glad to hear your thoughts as we move forward. www.roystonmuseum.org.uk
A Youth Council for Royston Royston’s Mayor, Cllr Robert Inwood, recognises the need and importance of working with young people and involving them with local democracy and decision-making. He has therefore formed a steering group of local town councillors and is currently doing the groundwork to enable a youth council to be set up. He says that this may take some time but this needs to be done so that youngsters have real influence. It is hoped that a youth council would give our young people a voice by allowing them to discuss relevant issues with the decision makers. They know what issues affect them and a youth council would enable them to contribute to improving our community for their futures.
Naturally Royston The Naturally Royston Working Party have had a productive few months, having focussed on the natural environment and how to make our gardens a friendly habitat for pollinating insects. Their ‘bugs and flowers’ stand at the May Fayre was very popular and hopefully there are nectar rich flowers now growing in gardens all over town. The seeds were donated by John O’Conner Grounds Maintenance to honour their 50-year anniversary. Naturally Royston also arranged for the siting and unveiling of the commemorative plaque for the tree sculpture in Priory Gardens which is dedicated to the late Cllr Peter Burt who’s inspiration it was. The group is looking forward to their involvement in the Royston Arts Festival event on Saturday 28 September, which is in the theme of ‘Our Planet’. They will also be organising further litter picks around the town in the near future.

My Local Life PEter Heppelthwaite Peter Heppelthwaite is one of the founding members of Limitless Academy of Performing Arts, who have recently set up drama studios in Royston. Peter has a very experienced background in the West End, TV and Film. We asked him some questions to find out more about him: Your favourite Local Shop? Lordsman Barbers. The guys in here have been great since the day we started work on refurbing Melbourn Street, even before I became a regular for a head shave and beard trim! Supportive from the word go and brilliant at what they do, top boys! Last book you read? Time to read? What a luxury! I did read Bram Stokers “Dracula” towards the middle of last year as we were looking for a play to produce for our Limitless Adults term. The theatre adaptation was pretty close to the book and a really good challenge for the class. What makes you happy? Nothing better than taking the whole family to the cinema. It ticks being with those I love most and enables me to switch off for a moment. I love a good movie, although you could say it’s a bit of a “busman’s holiday”… Inspiration for when I’m directing our own stuff!

Now spoon half the mixture hand full of sultanas or dried cherries into the cake tin and then layer on would be a welcome addition to the apple slices to totally cover the the recipe but experiment with your favourite flavours... Top this with the remainIng you get on. cake batter finishing with a “blob” Apple Cake effect rather than a smooth finish, and top with the flaked almonds. • 225g Self raising flour • 1 tsp Baking powder • 225g Golden caster sugar • 2 Eggs from happy and healthy free running hens • 125g Butter-melted • 325g Cooking apples, peeled and cut into slices • A pinch of ground cinnamon (options - leave out if not your thing!)
Bake for approximately 1.5 hours. All ovens are different so test your cake as it bakes. I recently cooked this in someone else’s oven and it was ready in just over the hour. You are looking for a good rise, an even golden brown colour to the top of the cake and for a knife or cocktail stick to come away clean when removed from the cake. Also when you hold the cake close to
your ear it will be silent, where as an undercooked cake will still be making tiny bubbling noises... take care not to burn your face though! Once you are satisfied the cake is cooked remove it from the oven, place on a cooling rack and release the sides of the tin but leave the cake in the tin for a good 15 minutes to cool. Then simply peel away the greaseproof paper and enjoy a slice, or two, with a lovely cup of tea and good company. Until next time dear reader...

MUSEUM MUSINGS: Royston Tapestry
In a true tapestry, scenes and images are woven into the cloth as it is made. In the Royston Tapestry, the scenes are stitched onto pre-finished linen. When Jane Vincent dreamt up our masterpiece, she wanted to create an artwork that was directly comparable to the Bayeux Tapestry. Where the Bayeux shows grand national events, ours shows the lives of everyday villagers. We believe that these stories are just as important as battles and kings and queens. To make this point, we’ve ensured that the Royston Tapestry mimics the Bayeux at every point: in scene design, in art style, in technique, and, yes, in name.

Why should I get my pet vaccinated?
Vaccinations aim to protect your dog, cat or rabbit from lethal or contagious disease (some of them can also be transmitted to humans, e.g. Rabies). The vaccines contain agents that look like microorganisms but do not cause the disease or, in certain cases, might produce a limited and mild replication of the microorganism. The vaccine stimulates the production of specific antibodies and makes your pet more able to respond and overcome a disease when he gets exposed to the microorganism, because his
immune system already “knows” the microorganism. Prevention is better than cure.
There are many types of Vaccines. Some of them contain killed infectious agents, while others have “weakened” infectious agents that can replicate in the body of your pet. Every pet must be thoroughly examined by a Vet before receiving the vaccination to make sure he/she is fit enough. There is a very long list of diseases for which there is a vaccine available, but your pet will not need all of them! Speak with Only the best for your pet your Vet about your pet’s lifestyle and Home from Home Dog Boarding environment and you will be advised Dog Walking regarding what vaccines your pet Pet Visiting needs and how Paws Sarah Jenkins often they need @ my Royston based to receive them. 07523 010347 Supplied by Royston Sarahjenkins16@gmail.com Veterinary Centre

Set realistic goals. One of the biggest mistakes people make is to set unrealistic goals. All you will do is feel a failure when you don’t achieve them. You didn’t get out of shape overnight, so don’t expect to get in shape in a couple of weeks. Set yourself realistic goals and feel fantastic when you achieve them.

Which country do you come from?
Which country do you come from? To help us understand our fellow humans, motivational speaker, Mark Gungor, imagines that all people came from four very different countries:
1. The country of Control This population just wants to get things done; their favourite vehicle is the bulldozer! They want to be appreciated for what they do. But as we don’t appreciate their ruthless approach, they don’t get what they want.
2. The country of Fun These crazy people just want to have fun; what we find embarrassing, they find hilarious! Their favourite vehicle is the jet plane; high speeds, no limits. They love to get noticed, but we react to their behaviour by saying, ‘Oh don’t encourage them!’ So they too are denied what they truly seek.
3. The country of Perfect These meticulous people want everything to be perfect; they just want to get it right. Their favourite vehicle is the train – needing two perfectly parallel rails or it won’t work.
They want you to be sensitive to their feelings – but the rest of the imperfect world is always offending them – so they often carry a lot of hurt.
4. The country of Peace These people just want to get along; they hate emotional waves. Their favourite vehicle is the gondola; gliding smoothly on calm waters. They just want you to respect who they are – but because they are so prepared to concede for an easy life, they are the easiest population to disrespect. So which country do you come from? All these countries speak different ‘languages’ – how many can you speak? For success in business, and in life, understand who you are talking to, and which ‘country they come from’. Make an effort to talk to them the way they want to be spoken to, and you’ll be amazed at the difference!
