Welcome September brings with it new beginnings and opportunities. Many of our local schools have their Open Days ahead, to help you to choose the right school for your child. Many organisations and activities start up again in September, and you can see them within the What’s On pages. The end of September welcomes the return of Royston Arts Festival, and the Creative Royston committee is proud to unveil the full programme of over 30 events, which this year are themed around “Our Planet”. You should receive a copy of the programme along with The Listing, alternatively extra copies are available to pick up from Royston Library and around the town centre. Themed with the Festival, and as depicted on our covers, we also thought it was important for our readers to know that we choose to work with a printer who is a member of the Forestry Stewardship Council (FSC), a global not-for-profit organisation dedicated to the promotion of responsible forest management worldwide. Our magazines are printed on FSC accredited paper and printed using eco-friendly vegetable based inks.

National Air ambulance Week Could you spare some time this September to help your local life-saving charity? If so, the staff and volunteers from Essex & Herts Air Ambulance (EHAAT) would love you to join them during National Air Ambulance Week (NAAW) which runs from Monday 9th to Sunday 15th September, raising awareness and collecting donations for the Charity. This annual initiative sees air ambulance charities from Scotland to Cornwall working together to publicise their work and raise funds. The UK’s air ambulance charities are funded by the generosity of the public and treat over 25,000 patients a year. Across the UK an air ambulance is deployed every 10 minutes. Throughout September EHAAT’s ‘Collection Crew’ will be at prearranged locations across Essex and Hertfordshire speaking to members of the public, collecting donations and selling pin badges. Jon Rodriguez, Head of Fundraising at EHAAT said: “National Air Ambulance Week is a great opportunity for us to talk to people in the community about how their donation really does make a difference.” “It costs in excess of £750,000 a month to cover all our costs and without
access to National Lottery funding and only limited support from government we depend on the people of Essex and Hertfordshire to remain operational and saving lives. If you could spare just two hours to help us during this important week to assist at one of our collection points, we would really appreciate it.” EHAAT, unlike NHS emergency services, is a charity providing a free life-saving Helicopter Emergency Medical Service for the critically ill and injured of Essex, Hertfordshire and surrounding areas. Each critical care team consists of a pilot and co-pilot, a pre-hospital care doctor and a critical care paramedic who can be rushed to the scene of an incident with life-saving support equipment to deliver advanced clinical care that is normally only found in the hospital emergency department. Once stabilised, the patient will be conveyed by air or land to the most appropriate hospital for their needs. To find out where EHAAT staff and volunteers will be collecting during National Air Ambulance Week, or to volunteer to help, contact the EHAAT fundraising team on 0345 2417 690 or visit: www.ehaat.org/naaw

Foxton men’s breakfast Royston Rotary At our last meeting our planned visit was called off because of poor weather conditions and illness. However, one of our guests just happened to mention that he could speak briefly about his time as an advisor to a previous Mayor of London, none other than Boris Johnson! Anthony Brown spoke eloquently and kindly about his role in advising the Mayor, answering many interesting questions about Mr Johnson’s time in office and as a candidate for the role of Prime Minister. Our next meeting is on Saturday 21st September at 8.30 am in the lounge of Foxton Village Hall, CB22 6RN. Our guest speaker is County Councillor Peter Topping and his subject is “A history of the Home Office from Lord North to Sajid Javid” Contact: Mark Howard: 01223 503377 or Tony Garrick: 01763 221658 email: foxtonmensbreakfast@gmail.com

Loving Local Living
PEter Heppelthwaite Peter Heppelthwaite is one of the founding members of Limitless Academy of Performing Arts, who have recently set up drama studios in Royston. Peter has a very experienced background in the West End, TV and Film. We asked him some questions to find out more about him: What is your favourite local shop? Lordsman Barbers. The guys in here have been great since the day we started work on refurbing Melbourn Street, even before I became a regular for a head shave and beard trim! Supportive from the word go and brilliant at what they do, top boys! Last book you read? Time to read? What a luxury! I did read Bram Stokers “Dracula” towards the middle of last year as we were looking for a play to produce for our Limitless Adults term. The theatre adaptation was pretty close to the book and a really good challenge for the class. What makes you happy? Nothing better than taking the whole family to the cinema. It ticks being with those I love most and enables me to switch off for a moment. I love a good movie, although you could say it’s a bit of a “busman’s holiday”…. Inspiration for when I’m directing our own stuff! What do you love about your work? Actually, and this may seem a bit “fluffy”, but… seeing the difference coming to Limitless makes to our students’ personal growth. It seems to help on all levels, from school to family life, and is really quite humbling. What amazes you? In a nutshell, the resilience of the human spirit. What people go through and how they go through it. Not only amazing, but inspiring.
What is your favourite way to spend a Saturday? Honestly, lying on the sofa, watching brilliant TV drama series. It’s the only real day off for us, so the possibility of being a couch potato is most appealing! What are you looking forward to most this month? “Oliver!” rehearsals. Time genuinely flies and it’s starting to sound proper. I love directing, and this 32 strong cast is going to do us proud. Being able to take such a well-known piece and put your own stamp on it is a bit special. What is your proudest moment? So many had and I’m sure so many to come. Birth of my three daughters and when my wife said ‘yes’ have to be up there. Best thing that has happened to you recently Winning the National Drama Festival Associations “All British Winners” final. We entered a production of “Teechers” by John Godber into the Welwyn festival and ended up with 8 awards to our name, including the “All Winners”. Just fabulous. What has been the most valuable life lesson that you have learnt Being polite and courteous costs nothing but rewards you a million times over. Four people you would invite to dinner Quentin Tarantino, Francis Ford-Coppola, my mum and Robin Williams. ‘Nuff said! What inspirational quote sums you up “It takes a great deal of courage to see the world in all its tainted glory, and still to love it” Oscar Wilde Limitless Performing Arts Academy 0330 124 6868 www.limitlessacademyarts.com

pet vaccinations Vaccinations aim to protect your dog, cat or rabbit from lethal or contagious disease (some of them can also be transmitted to humans, e.g. Rabies). The vaccines contain agents that look like microorganisms but do not cause the disease or, in certain cases, might produce a limited and mild replication of the microorganism. The vaccine stimulates the production of specific antibodies and makes your pet more able to respond and overcome a disease when he gets exposed to the microorganism, because his immune system already “knows” the microorganism. Prevention is better than cure. Every pet must be thoroughly examined by a Vet before receiving the vaccination to make sure he/she is fit enough. Speak with your Vet about your pet’s lifestyle and environment and you will be advised regarding what vaccines your pet needs and how often they need to receive them. ‘our planet’ at curwens
Curwens Art Gallery is in the High Street at Royston and we support local artists in exhibiting and selling their varied artwork. For the months of September and October we are hosting exhibitors from the Royston Museum Printing Workshop who have responded to the Art Festival theme of ‘Our Planet’ from widely differing perspectives. Some have explored the micro world of cellular structures and crystalline patterns. Others have used the natural world of humans, animals and plants as inspiration. Then there is the view of our planet from space and the view of space from our planet. All prints are made on the old Columbia press at Royston Museum. Preview Evening Thursday 12th September 6-8pm We are also opening the Art Gallery on Saturday 28th September, 2-4pm as part of the Arts Festival.

MUSEUM MUSINGS: Royston Tapestry
In a true tapestry, scenes and images are woven into the cloth as it is made. In the Royston Tapestry, the scenes are stitched onto pre-finished linen.
To make this point, we’ve ensured that the Royston Tapestry mimics the Bayeux at every point: in scene design, in art style, in technique, and, yes, in name.
And thanks to the brilliant efforts of Ad Shots Digital, the entire length of the Tapestry is now viewable on our Museum touchscreen! Stop by to enjoy a virtual walkthrough in incredible detail.
The Bayeux itself is also an embroidery! Apple Cake
Hello my fellow foodies... and welcome to another bright and shiny edition of The Listing.
So, September already, how the months are flying by! All summer I have been keeping an eye on my apple tree and this year looks to bring a bumper crop of apples, so I thought I would share with you a recipe I recently came across in an old family recipe book. I think the addition of a hand full of sultanas or dried cherries would be a welcome addition to the recipe but experiment with your favourite flavours... I’d love to hear how you get on. Apple Cake • 225g Self raising flour • 1 tsp Baking powder • 225g Golden caster sugar • 2 Eggs from happy and healthy free running hens • 125g Butter-melted • 325g Cooking apples, peeled and cut into slices • A pinch of ground cinnamon (options - leave out if not your thing!) • 25g Flaked almonds • 1/2 Teaspoon almond essence Let’s begin by popping the oven on to 160° and lining and greasing an 8” deep, loose bottomed, cake tin. Next, pop the flour, baking powder and sugar into a bowl. Now pour in the eggs, almond essence and butter and beat until everything is combined and the batter is smooth and free from lumps. Now spoon half the mixture into the cake tin and then layer on the apple slices to totally cover the surface, then sprinkle over with cinnamon. Top this with the remainIng
cake batter finishing with a “blob” effect rather than a smooth finish, and top with the flaked almonds. Bake for approximately 1.5 hours. All ovens are different so test your cake as it bakes. I recently cooked this in someone else’s oven and it was ready in just over the hour. You are looking for a good rise, an even golden brown colour to the top of the cake and for a knife or cocktail stick to come away clean when removed from the cake. Also when you hold the cake close to your ear it will be silent, where as an undercooked cake will still be making tiny bubbling noises... take care not to burn your face though! Once you are satisfied the cake is cooked remove it from the oven, place on a cooling rack and release the sides of the tin but leave the cake in the tin for a good 15 minutes to cool. Then simply peel away the greaseproof paper and enjoy a slice, or two, with a lovely cup of tea and good company. Until next time dear reader...

Leisure Royston Reducing Waste
The Royston Arts Festival’s theme of ‘Our Planet’ is a timely celebration of our precious earth and this month local groups are sharing practical ways to conserve resources and reduce waste; saving both money and the planet. The oldest of these local initiatives is Royston Recycle, an online platform for freecycling unwanted items. Since 2005 online exchanges have kept an estimated 45,000 items in use for longer. In the past five years, other volunteers running Royston Repair Café have also been keeping items out of landfill by offering free repairs of broken items, fixing over 50% of the 640 items assessed.
September 2nd-6th is Zero Waste Week and, to help rid the world of plastic, a long-time friend of the Repair Café has launched Anahata selling plastic-free, planet-kind products online and on market stalls. Also offering products that are kind to the environment are Green & Grey makers of products for homes and gardens from reclaimed materials. Finally, to help recycle ‘difficult materials’, local organisers have teamed up with global recycling company Terracycle to establish collection points in and around Royston for items such as toothbrushes, crisp packets and pet food pouches, also raising funds for charities.

And that is just about all the travelling Reed will have made on the “Road to Lord’s” this season, for in all the matches leading to this point in the 2019 National Village Cricket Championship, they have been drawn at home except for one round. And that was at Foxton, only nine miles away along the A10. Having beaten Clubs from all over the country, Reed will now be contesting the Final against the battle-hardened Yorkshiremen from Houghton Main. Reed is the only Hertfordshire Cricket Club to have won this prestigious competition in its 47year history and intend to return home victorious for the third time having won at the iconic “Home of Cricket” previously in 2012 and 2017. Several Clubs have won the cup twice and only a handful have triumphed three times. Led again by Captain, Tom Greaves, the players in the squad are largely unchanged from the 2017 team with the majority of these cricketers having been at Reed since they were Colts in the Under 9 age-groups. Many of them have already played for almost 20 years together.
The Club will be organising coaches to transport members and supporters to Lord’s on Sunday 15th September. The match will begin at 11am so coaches would have to leave at approximately 8.15/8.45am, depending on numbers with routes likely to be via the A1 and A10 with pick-ups in Meldreth, Royston, Reed, Buntingford and Baldock. If you wish to book a seat on the coach, please contact Cilla Robertson on email cilla@richardandcilla.co.uk The return journey will be departing from Lord’s at 6pm and the cost of a return ticket will be £10. The published ground admission on www.lords.org shows tickets for children at £5, adults £15 and £7.50 for the over 65s. We hope to see you there!

Think Garden, Think Richard
Home & Garden
Materials For A Purpose... Pet Friendly by Melbourn garden designer, Richard Arnott This month I want to investigate products to help our pets enjoy the garden. Ground materials can play a big part in how are pets interact with the garden. Grass is a major part of most gardens and can be difficult to manage with young dogs who may love to dig, faeces accumulation or urine killing the grass. This was a problem for a client with two Labradors, a small courtyard garden and a young family. The answer was to remove the lawn and replace with artificial grass. Faeces can be removed and excess washed off so dogs and children can use the lawn without issue! In larger gardens the answer is to regularly be on poo patrol, walk the dogs more or train them to use a certain area of the garden. In my experience cats and bark chip are not a very good combination in a garden. I like to encourage clients with cats to avoid and choose cobbles or pebbles to mulch borders. Paved paths are good for maintaining claws and better than gravel in between toes.
Stimulating planting is a great way to provide interest for cats especially in the garden. Grasses are great because they provide movement and a place to hide. Stipa tenuissima and Deschampsia cespitosa ‘Goldtau’ are two good options. Cats love to stalk around the garden so providing places for this natural behaviour is good. I advise some distance between this and the bird table for obvious reasons! Providing shade in the warmer months is also important for our pets.
Secure boundaries with sturdy fencing is a must for any responsible dog owner. It is surprising how small the gap needs to be for an escape. Also worth noting that the height of a fence is very relevant to the size of your pet and potential wildlife entering into your garden. I would always recommend 6 ft feather edge fencing as an entry level affordable solution. More exciting horizontal, planed timber solutions and beautiful bespoke panels and woven willow solutions are available too. For more in depth advice or garden design Toxic plants are very often overlooked when planting the garden. I like to think of the plants help please get in touch to arrange a as the star performers in the garden that bring consultation. a space to life, but if a client has pets it will influence the selection. Dogs in particular can chew plants in the garden so a few plants to know would be Aconite, Foxglove, GARDEN DESIGN & BUILD Delphinium, Hydrangea, acorns from Oaks, daffodil bulbs, Yew, Laburnum, Cherry laurel berries and Lily. This list is more to make you aware than deter you from using these plants as they are all very common plants that a pet could easily be exposed to on a walk and often as a dog matures it will be less inclined to chew!
richardarnott.com
Clearly defined boundaries help to steer pets away from certain areas in the garden. Raised beds can be a very useful way for elevating planting if you have a lively pet. Hard wood or soft wood sleepers can be used creatively in the design of a garden. Edging beds with low hedging such as box or lavender can be very effective too. Hard landscape materials that are less pleasant for paws such as gravel or cobbles will also help. A designated digging area is a good way to train your pet away from other areas in the garden. It may take a little time but will be helpful in the long run.

JH Beauty Pamper Packages
Review
We were welcomed along to JH Beauty, based above Abbot Travel on Fish Hill Square, Royston to experience their Luxury Pamper Nights. From £75/pp on the basis of four people, you can enjoy exclusive use of the salon, and a choice of one body treatment - either a massage or a facial and one nail treatment - pedicure or manicure - plus a delicious afternoon tea and glass of fizz, and every guest receives a little gift bag. We immediately felt relaxed on arrival when we were offered a glass of fizz or a soft drink, and Jess explained all the products she would be using. We each opted for the luxury facial, and were even more impressed when a back massage was included at the start - I can honestly say Jess is a true natural, and this was the second best back massage I’ve ever had (the first being at a spiritual yoga retreat in the Lakes, with chanting and singing included at no extra cost...!) Who would realise how much tension we have in our back and shoulders, and Jess’ expertise was the perfect balance of tension release and relaxation. We were offered either a
hand or foot massage, each opting for the opposite massage to our nail treatments. The facial itself was divine, and the Natural Spa Factory products were rich and luxurious, finishing with a luxury eye gel and mask whilst lying on a heated couch! Our manicure and pedicure treatments included hand / foot massages, we won’t say too much but you won’t be disappointed by Lindsey’s special touches during the pedicure (especially if you love daisies!) Heated mits / booties and rich creams left our skin feeling amazing before our expert nail treatments, with a huge selection of polishes and gel colours to choose from. Between treatments we enjoyed an Afternoon Tea experience which included an array of savoury and exquisitely presented cakes.

Professional Which country do you come from? Which country do you come from?
To help us understand our fellow humans, motivational speaker, Mark Gungor, imagines that all people came from four very different countries:
1. The country of Control
This population just wants to get things done; their favourite vehicle is the bulldozer! They want to be appreciated for what they do. But as we don’t appreciate their ruthless approach, they don’t get what they want.
2. The country of Fun
These crazy people just want to have fun; what we find embarrassing, they find hilarious! Their favourite vehicle is the jet plane; high speeds, no limits. They love to get noticed, but we react to their behaviour by saying, ‘Oh don’t encourage them!’ So they too are denied what they truly seek.
3. The country of Perfect
These meticulous people want everything to be perfect; they just want to get it right. Their favourite vehicle is the train – needing two
perfectly parallel rails or it won’t work. They want you to be sensitive to their feelings – but the rest of the imperfect world is always offending them – so they often carry a lot of hurt.
4. The country of Peace
These people just want to get along; they hate emotional waves. Their favourite vehicle is the gondola; gliding smoothly on calm waters. They just want you to respect who they are – but because they are so prepared to concede for an easy life, they are the easiest population to disrespect. So which country do you come from? All these countries speak different ‘languages’ – how many can you speak? For success in business, and in life, understand who you are talking to, and which ‘country they come from’. Make an effort to talk to them the way they want to be spoken to, and you’ll be amazed at the difference!
