We are delighted to welcome our new team of young people to The Listing, who join us for the coming months in between their studying commitments, working across various disciplines in the business. As a community business, we take great pride in developing the careers of self-starting young people who are interested in marketing, publishing, design or journalism, and are always keen to hear from other enthusiastic students for future opportunities. You can find out more about The Listing team on our website. This October is jam-packed full of events for all the family, ranging from Halloween festivities to school open days. We shine our spotlight on Cam Sight, dive into the life of Lee Jauncey and ponder the patterns of procrastination. As always, we give recognition to some of the great businesses and charities that bolster our community and look to give back to those who give so much and last but not least, we embrace Black History month and we showcase some exciting upcoming events.

Royston U3A’s membership is approaching the 500 mark and members enjoy taking part in a wide range of interest groups from pottery and petanque to clay shooting and current affairs. townswomen’s guild A ‘Mobile Exhibit’ is how younger volunteers at IWM Duxford describe John Kelshall. While guiding school parties of 250 pupils each day through the permanent Battle of Britain display, John regales them with stories of his childhood growing up during the WWII years in Enfield. Boyhood games included scrumping fruit, collecting shrapnel from machine gun casings for “swapsies”, and old newspapers for recycling to earn a Salvage badge. Reminiscences of Anderson and Morrison shelters, queuing at the butchers for nonrationed rabbit, always carrying his Mickey Mouse gas masks. A question John likes to ask his audience is ‘Who had the first onesie?’ To the childrens astonishment, he claims Sir Winston Churchill often dressed in a Siren suit, establishing the fashion.

Royston Rotary

October will be a busy month for Rotarians. You can read more about our Swimathon elsewhere in this issue, but continuing the physical exercise theme, we’re also looking forward to our walking weekend near Fakenham, where many of us, with partners, will enjoy a healthy weekend meandering around some picturesque parts of Norfolk. Apart from getting our boots muddy, there will also be an opportunity for a BBQ and some silly games. Our Memory Café will again be welcoming people with memory issues and their carers on 14th October and 11th November we’ll be at the Town Hall (in Room 11) while the Old Barn is being redecorated. www.roystonrotary.com

WI AM Our speaker in September was William J French. Our members really enjoyed his talk entitled ‘Welcome to My World’. We heard how William joined the navy at the age of 15 and a half, he was only able to do this by getting his elder brother to forge their mother’s signature. Following time spent serving in the Falklands war William served as a butler on the Royal Yacht Britannia. He was also butler to Prince Charles and Princess Diana, the Rothchild family, Lord Rothermere, Nicole Kidman and many more stars.

WI AM meets on the 2nd Wednesday of the month at the Market Hill Rooms, Royston. Coffee and tea is served from 9.45am with speaker following on. Visitors are welcome. For more details call Pat Morritt on 01763 661627

Royston’s Got Talent!

hidden royston

Keeping Royston Safe? Views about CCTV cameras in public spaces seem to fall into two broad camps. On one side people say ‘If you’ve done nothing wrong, you’ve nothing to hide’, in the other camp are those who believe that any filming is an invasion of our privacy and a threat to civil liberties. Readers may remember the controversy surrounding the use of police-controlled cameras to record car number plates - Royston’s so-called ‘ring of steel’ - that was deemed to be illegal. Surveillance is clearly a subject that divides opinion and one which is itself likely to be increasingly under surveillance as the number of cameras, particularly in and around business premises and private residences, goes up. Whether it’s on the roads being tracked by speed cameras, around the station, or visiting the High Street, it sometimes feels like we’re

being watched every step of the way by the security cameras we see, and many we probably don’t. In Royston, there are 11 cameras in public spaces controlled by the Hertfordshire CCTV Partnership (of just under 700 across the county). Setting out to find out more about the use of CCTV cameras in public places around Royston, I met with Mike Read, Operations Manager with the Partnership and learnt a lot. To find out about CCTV surveillance in Royston’s public spaces, visit

Out & About... Royston Rotary Swimathon Dig out those Speedos! It’s Swimathon time! We all know that swimming is a super form of exercise, and something you can enjoy whether you’re seven or seventy. But swimming is also a great way to raise funds for your favourite cause – as Royston’s Rotarians know as they gear up for the club’s annual Swimathon. The event, which the club has been running for more than fifteen years, has raised many tens of thousands of pounds, all of it for good causes. The event, at the Leisure Centre, challenges sponsored teams of up to six swimmers to complete as many lengths of the pool as they can in the space of an hour. It’s a fun evening for everyone, and it generates some serious charitable funds – more than £4,000 last year. Every penny raised goes to charity. Sponsorship money is shared 50:50 between each team’s selected cause and Rotary’s charitable choice – this year it will be Royston’s Parish Church Refurbishment Fund plus other charitable projects at home and abroad.

The evening attracts teams of swimmers from all age groups – Rainbows and Brownies at the young end of the scale, with Rotarians themselves at the senior end! In between, many local churches, schools and charities all recruit teams, all ready to get wet for their pet charitable project. Howard Peacock’s the man in charge, and he’s hopeful that the event will equal or beat last year’s tally of 12 teams, 60 swimmers,1206 lengths swum, and £4,000 raised. He’s keen to welcome established and new teams of swimmers – “It’s easy and free to enter,” he says, “and everyone always enjoys the challenge of swimming those few extra lengths – it’s not a race, but there’s a definite element of competition, whether against the clock or the previous year’s record. Plus the satisfaction of knowing you’re doing a lot of good in the process.”

This year’s Swimathon is set for 6-10pm on Sunday 13th October at Royston Leisure Centre – you can download an entry form from www.swimathon@ roystonrotary.com, or call Rtn. Howard Listing A4 Oct 18_Layout 1 12/09/2018 13:44 Page 1 Peacock on 07711 471470

New Community Hub Launches in Royston Garden House Hospice Care and the Compassionate Neighbours Project have launched a new community hub in Royston following the success of the Stevenage Hub set up last autumn. The Hub is an opportunity for local people to pop in for a cup of tea and a chat, meet some of the Hospice team and find out more about the therapies and support services that are available throughout Garden House Hospice Care.

We are looking for new volunteers. Compassionate Neighbours are trained volunteers offering friendship and a listening ear to people in their community who are lonely or socially isolated. They visit them once a week or get involved at one of our social hubs. Royston Hub meets every Monday, 2-4pm, at Coombes Community Centre, Burns Road, Royston, SG8 5PT. This month I would like to share with you possibly the quickest recipe for chocolate > Pop the oven on to pre heat at 180° chip cookies ever! These cookies are Let’s begin by creaming the butter and the soft and slightly “gooey” type style both sugars until the mixture looks lighter bordering on a brownie like texture... just in colour and takes on a creamier texture. the thing to go with a cup of tea on a cold, Next stir in the vanilla seeds, orange zest and then gradually add the beaten egg damp, autumnal afternoon, or to share making sure you beat the mixture well around at Halloween! to incorporate all the egg between each Chunky Chocolate and Orange Cookies addition or you may well have a curdled mix to deal with. Makes approximately 12 cookies

Hello my fellow foodies...

> 150g butter (I like to use the salted variety) > 60g soft brown sugar > 100g granulated white sugar > Seeds scraped from 1/2 a vanilla pod > Finely grated zest of one orange > 1 egg from a happy and healthy free running hen > 220g plain white flour > 1/2 tsp bicarbonate of soda

Next, stir in the sifted flour and bicarbonate of soda and finally stir in the chunks of chocolate. As you can see from the picture I have used large chunks but it is up to you how large or small your chunks are, some may even prefer the uniformity of chocolate chips, the choice, as always dear reader, is up to you! Now all that remains to do is to spoon the mixture directly onto a greased baking sheet. I used an ice-cream scoop to ensure all my cookies were the same size and I left the mixture in a little “heap” allowing plenty of space between the

mounds as they do spread as they cook. Next, pop the trays into the pre heated oven and cook for approximately 10 minutes, but keep an eye on them as they can burn very quickly. Once they are cooked, firm and golden brown in colour, remove from the oven but let them cool for a few minutes before moving them to a cool rack to cool completely. Now all that remains to do is to pop the kettle on, invite a friend over and enjoy a cookie, or two, in good company! Until next time dear reader...

Two Day Musical Theatre Workshop

black history month - roger britten In 1856, the Royston Institute hosted a grand exhibition showcasing novelties and the latest technological advances. A reporter noted that one such novelty was ‘an intelligent looking African... printing off copies of a handbill.’ Roger Britten had been born in the British colony of Demerara (now Guyana) 16 years earlier. His was the first generation born into freedom and, when he was just 5 years old, a non-conformist minister Reverend William Garland Barrett arrived. He believed a Christian education was vital to the advancement of the children of ex-slaves but his mission was cut short when he fell seriously ill. He returned to England in 1848, taking Roger with him as his adopted son. The family settled in Upper King Street, Royston, where Barrett took up the pastorship of John Street Congregational Chapel. When the family moved away, they passed 15 year old Roger to the care of John Warren, a printer. Warren had big plans which included the launch of a monthly free newspaper (the Royston Crow), a venture that needed apprentices to support it. Roger learned quickly and soon took up a job in London.

Soon after Reverend Barret’s death, Roger adopted the middle name Mark. He married Royston girl Fanny Clarke, a white, Anglican 24-year-old dressmaker. Unfortunately, by age 43, Roger was unwell. He had contracted bronchopneumonia and died at his home on 1st June 1883. Unusually, the Royston Crow ran a lengthy obituary. ‘Many will remember the little black boy... who...through his good temper and amiability, won the affections of those around him wherever he went.’

As part of Black History Month find out more about Roger Britten at Royston Museum 2pm on Saturday 5th October (with special guests, King James Academy Royston’s Boys Choir who will be performing a song they have written about Roger Britten). You will also be able to see Stacey Leigh’s painting, which interprets his life, and see the printing press Roger operated. More details on his life can be found at www.hertsmemories.org.uk This project has been supported by Creative Royston.

National Curry Week was founded in October 1998 by a great friend of British Raj – the late Peter Grove. He was a journalist and editor of the ‘Real Curry Restaurant Guide’, which was the Michelin Guide of British curry restaurants. The initiative of National Curry Week was launched to both celebrate & support Britain’s favourite cuisine whilst also raising awareness and funds for charity.

The menu at British Raj Express is packed with a range of unusual and unique speciality dishes, whether you have a passion for hot and fiery curries or a mild palette, Safwaan and his team will be happy to recommend a dish that suits you. This year British Raj is supporting Royston Poppy Appeal by donating £1 from every takeaway during National Curry Week (7th October to 13th October).

My Local Life lee jauncey

Lee Martin Jauncey is founder of LMJ Plumbing, a heating and plumbing business based in Litlington, where he has lived for the past nine years. The Listing caught up with Lee to ask him some questions and find out more about the person behind the business. Tell us about your work. I worked with my father for many years as part of his building and plumbing business, and when he decided to retire I went on my own and formed LMJ Plumbing. What do you love about your work? I enjoy my job as I get to meet people from all walks of life. What’s your favourite local place to eat? When going out to eat we like to visit Yuva as you can always rely on the food being good. We also like to visit country pubs that have a nice garden when the weather is good. What is your favourite way to spend a Saturday? At the weekends my favourite pastime is to take our caravan and visit different places in the South East. What are you looking forward to most this month? One good thing about October is that I should be able to put the mower away for the winter as I have spent a lot of my time mowing paddocks for our ponies (although I am not looking forward to the winter mud!)

I can’t thank them enough for all their hard work. Over the past two years they have raised an amazing £46,700 for a replacement Emergency Response Vehicle which has just been ordered. We have trained Emergency Response volunteers on call 24/7 365 days a year ready to respond to any emergencies. These could be house fires, floods, accidents etc.“We shall never forget the comfort of being taken into your van for tea and reassurance after having stood out in the cold watching our home burn down” one person said. The vehicle is equipped with clean clothes, food, even pet food and soft toys for children. Guidance and advice is provided for what the next steps are. This year the Committee are raising funds for Pop Up spokes. A new service that will enable the public to access mobility aids, such as wheelchairs, more easily. These will appear in supermarkets.

What has been the most valuable life lesson that you have learnt? The most valuable life lesson I have learnt is “Happy wife, easy life!” How do you relax? To unwind at the end of the week I look forward to sitting in my garden with a nice bottle of red wine. What inspirational quote sums you up? I like to think honesty is the best policy.

What is your proudest moment? One of my proudest moments was when my granddaughter was born and she’s a joy.

The British Red Cross Hertfordshire have a fabulous committee of volunteers who run several events throughout the year raising funds to support local services.

What is your favourite film? My favourite film at the moment is Bohemian Rhapsody as I am a life long fan of Freddie Mercury and Queen and it was good to see how they began. But give me a good Bond movie any day.

News from the conservators Conservation Work

Footpaths

During September, the Conservators met on the Heath to plan our winter work. Problems with dogs and vandalism at the eastern end of the site has made grazing very difficult. As a result, scrub and saplings are encroaching. Some areas will be cut over the winter - it may appear dramatic at first, but if this work is not done the scrub will encroach on the open grassland and the species for which the site is recognised will slowly be lost.

With autumn comes the likelihood that some paths will become muddy and slippery. Please try and avoid damage and erosion to the site by making use of alternative routes.

In some areas, work has to be done by hand. It is slow and laborious but tools like the Tree Popper really help. At the moment, we only have one. These effective bits of kit cost £300 each and will allow us, with the help of our volunteers, to lift single stem bushes without much ground disturbance and to remove them without using chemicals. We will be meeting The Friends of Therfield Heath to ask for help to purchase three Tree Poppers to facilitate the maintenance of the site going forwards.

Height Barriers

Please be aware that the 2m height limit height barriers have been reinstated in the main car park. We are looking into other solutions for the longer-term. Cycling

Please remember, cycling is not permitted anywhere on Therfield Heath. If you are interested in volunteering on Therfield Heath, please contact Cynthia. c.combe@therfieldheath.org.uk www.therfieldheath.org.uk Enquiries maybe directed to clerk@therfieldheath.org.uk

Wellbeing

Looking After you Don’t forget to Breathe… This can seem like a silly statement at first, of course you wouldn’t forget. It’s one of the main components of being alive, right? But really and truly how often do you breathe properly? In yoga classes we really focus on feeling that connection to your inhalations and exhalations, however, you don’t need to be on a yoga mat to enhance your breathing practice. I say practice because at first when you begin to truly feel your breath it can feel awkward and unnatural but controlling your breath patterns can give you unlimiting benefits. Boosting your energy, relieving symptoms or stress, tension and anxiety, enhanced immunity giving us clearer and calmer thinking are all but a few powerful reasons to give this simple task a try. Here are a couple of breathing techniques to help you begin. Box Breathing: Sit comfortably and gently close your eyes. Allow your breath to firstly be natural and once settled begin to draw a box within your mind. As you draw the left side of the box you inhale. To draw the top of the box you hold the breath. Right side of the box to exhale. And hold at the bottom

of the box. This will begin to calm your nervous system and reduce signs of stress. Continue the drawing of the box several times until you are ready to return to natural breathing. Counting Breath: This is simply counting whilst breathing. Begin counting to 4 as you inhale and the count also to 4 as you exhale you can begin to lengthen the count to 5 or 6 as your practice deepens, allowing your full breath to fill your lungs as you inhale and empty all the breath out as your exhale. If you wish to bring in a holding of the breath after the inhale for the same count this will help deepen your practice and improve the benefits.

Which Time Waster Are You? Which time waster are you? I’ve talked about procrastination before; putting things off until later. It’s one of the deadly sins of time management. Many people don’t realise they do it, so here are 10 different procrastinators – how many do you recognise? 1. The Cleaner: ‘Before I start, I’ll put on some laundry and then I might tidy my desk so I have room to work…’

8. The Gamer: ‘I’ll start after I take care of some things in my town and, ooh, I wonder if I can get that loot box?’

2. The List Maker: ‘Right! To work! First things first, write another list..!’

9. The Viewer: ‘I’m clearly thinking about that programme I missed last night, so I’ll just watch it now on catch-up and then I’ll start work.’

3. The Napper: ‘Just 5 more minutes… Zzzzz…’

Company Tax Returns

10. The Perpetuator: I was going to start 30 minutes ago, but now it’s getting a little late… So best if I start tomorrow when I am more refreshed.’

4. The Sidetracker: ‘I know I need to finish that thing that is due tomorrow, but I’ve just had a great idea for the other thing that is due next month…’

Company Accounts Preparation

Sole Trader and Partnerships Company Secretarial Services including use of registered office facility

Do any of those ring a bell with you? If in doubt – just do it!

5. The Sharer: ‘[Posts] “Here’s a picture of me about to start work!” *smiley face*’

7. The Snacker: ‘Brain work uses energy too – maybe I should have a snack before I start… And maybe a coffee… Anyone want to come for a coffee with me?’

6. The Researcher: ‘I love researching... OMG that video is sooo funny – I wonder if there are more on YouTube?’
